James Stewart and Doris Day in The Man Who Knew Too Much (Alfred Hitchcock, 1956)
Cast: James Stewart, Doris Day, Brenda de Banzie, Bernard Miles, Ralph Truman, Daniel Gélin, Mogens Wieth, Alan Mowbray, Hillary Brook, Christopher Olsen, Reggie Nalder, Richard Wattis, Noel Willman, Alix Talton, Carolyn Jones. Screenplay: John Michael Hayes, based on a story by Charles Bennett and D.B. Wyndham-Lewis. Cinematography: Robert Burks. Art direction: Henry Bumstead, Hal Pereira. Film editing: George Tomasini. Music: Bernard Herrmann.
It's not hard to see why Alfred Hitchcock would want to remake his 1934 film version of The Man Who Knew Too Much. It has good bones: a murder, a kidnapping, a political assassination plot, attractive international locations, colorful villainy, mistaken identifications, and innocents put in jeopardy by sheer accident. But he kind of blew it the first time with pallid protagonists (Leslie Banks and Edna Best), tedious comic byplay involving a sinister dentist, a wacky sun-worshiping cult, and a confusingly staged climactic shootout. Today it's best remembered for Peter Lorre's delicious villainy in his first English-language role. For the remake, Hitchcock supposedly told screenwriter John Michael Hayes not to watch the original or to read its screenplay but to follow his own retelling of the story. The result is a more supple narrative, and the stars, Doris Day and James Stewart, are a definite improvement over Best and Banks. Hayes has made them a rather edgy couple: She's an internationally known musical star who has gone into retirement to marry him, a Midwestern surgeon. He seems to be a bit resentful of her celebrity, and she seems to be a little disappointed at having to settle down in Indianapolis. He's given to outbursts of temper that she sometimes has to quell before he does something rash. Their marital tension never results in an out-and-out fight, but it makes for some uneasy moments. In some respects they verge on '50s stereotypes of male and female roles: He pulls out his medical expertise and administers a sedative to her before telling her that their son has been kidnapped, a rather extreme form of mansplaining. In the 1934 film, Best played an award-winning sharpshooter who fires the shot that kills the villain, while Day is given a softer task: She helps locate their kidnapped son by singing (and singing and singing) "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)," the film's Oscar-winning song. The remake is 45 minutes longer than the original, and it seems a little overextended. Still, the performances are good, and Robert Burks's Technicolor cinematography and the Marrakesh location of the first part of the film give the remake a definite edge, as does Bernard Herrmann's score. Herrmann makes his only on-camera appearance conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in the "Storm Cloud Cantata" at the Royal Albert Hall, in the pivotal scene that was carried over from the 1934 version.

BIOGRAPHY
TRIGGER WARNING: child abuse (verbal), drugs, promiscuity, cheating
Wyndham Robichaux was the product of a good ol' southern boy soying his wild oats too recklessly, if you ask the grandparents. They were of old money, one of few African-American families that managed to make their stronghold in such deep south in times not as friendly to their people. They assimiliated with and embraced the cajun culture whole-heartedly, to the point their children grew up English and (cajun) French equally. Their money was in the cuisine -- one good soul food restaurant turned into many, and these days they've even managed to package their brand in any major supermarket. They were a respectable bunch, that boasted modesty and priciples and the fear of God. So when their son, Olivier Landry, tried to run off with a girl that certainly wasn't appropriate, they made quick work to shut that all down and get him back under thumb.
They weren't cold-hearted enough to just abandon the baby, of course. Olivier's son was still his son-- they couldn't really acknowledge him whole-heartedly and legitimate, but they certainly did their best to make sure the bastard was comfortable and cared for, lest the public get wind of anything untoward. Appearances mattered, of course. The Landrys managed to work out an arrangement with the mother that she'd keep their names out of the mud and the boy safe, with Olivier's rights as father still intact if and when he wished to exercise them, and they would make sure she wouldn't fall out on the streets somewhere.
Wyndham's mother was a troubled woman, though. Promiscuous in the sense she could never stay with just the one guy, often bouncing from one beau to the next, or even whoever just offered the nicest free ride. And she spent much of that allowance on drugs and frivilous expenditures. But she kept her mouth shut and stayed in place as they wanted, because she didn't want to blow her ride. While Maria never really wanted to be a mother, Wyndham was seen as her cash cow, and she bothered to make sure he was up to their standards, to keep the Landry's happy. He was well-fed, clothed, got good schooling, etc. Whatever the Landrys dictated and funded for him, Maria dutifully catered to. She was not, however, very motherly or affectionate. That was fine, though-- he would often get to visit his father and their side of the family, who did give him enough attention and love, even if they weren't very truthful about his existence.
He was eight, when his mother got pregnant by another man. Maria didn't want that baby either, and neither did Sebastian. But they tried to make it work out anyway, for the sake of the kid. Sebastian kind of got an ugly two-for surprise in Wyndham, someone Maria conveniently left out of the picture until her current man basically felt trapped into fatherhood with her. The Landry's money made it bearable, though. For five years, anyway. Until Sebastian got sick and tired of dealing with Maria's free and fast lifestyle, and decided to call it quits on all of them. Wyndham still recalls the night that man shouted how he wasn't his father-- he'd never shared how much that cut to his core. Once Sebastian was out of the picture, Maria's disinterest in motherhood only grew. She took all her anger out on Wyndham's younger half-brother Lucas, specifically, often lamenting on the boy for being the reason her life was absolute shit and had fallen apart because of him. On the worst days, she even wished he'd never been born.
Now Wyndham, similarly, experienced a certain out-of-place and unwantedness in his life… He knew what that was like, too. And he felt guilty, that he was favored over his brother and treated better, simply because of his father's family. So he did his best to step in wherever he could, to help raise and care for his younger brother as much as possible. He loved Lucas, dearly. The two were like peas in a pod, and Wyndham went through life picking the boy back up and setting him straight again, and most importantly, reminding him that someone in this world did care for and want him. After a while, he was even able to bring Lucas to Landry outings, especially Sunday Church where they got revved up in the gospel sound.
As he got older, Wyndham followed a relatively straight-and-narrow path. Perfectly average and moderately privileged, but otherwise nothing too special to note. He wasn't exceptionally brainy, he didn't have anything he was particularly great at. In other words, a perfectly content existence all-around-- maybe not one the history books would write about, but certainly nothing to be ashamed about. In comparison to the rocky and chaotic childhood he was witness to, Wyndham was perfectly fine to simply have a boring, stable life. He went to college and studied in a few things, as he couldn't quite make up his mind… Architecture, then business, then marketing. But when he got out, he wound up getting an easy security gig that let him just sit and read while he 'watched' over trains and expensive equipment. No matter what, though, he stuck with his brother Lucas.
That is, until Lucas got himself a wife and a whole life outside of him. At first, Wyndham was a bit lost with himself because being a big brother was all he'd ever known. Now, he wasn't really needed anymore. And though he did go through a couple relationships himself, they never really amounted to much-- one woman left because he wasn't ambitious enough, another left because they weren't conceiving. Eventually, he settled into a casual dating scene and found himself in Raven's Peak, more for a business opportunity that fell through. But Wyndham decided to make the best of it for now, getting into security again. When Lucas got divorced and sole parental rights of Charlotte, he was the first to suggest they move out here and live with him, until his brother got back on his feet. He'd be able to help raise the girl too, now that Lucas would be on his own.
Since then, Wyndham has pushed for them to start their own event planning company. This was such a picturesque destination-- they could market to outsiders and townies alike. Naturally, he pulled his brother Lucas in on the venture. For once in his life, there's some ambition and excitement brewing in the man. He's got plans for their company, and he's happy to see it through the long haul this time.

The Thaiger Read the full article

Micro Space
Many people, in the state I live in, either have a house or talk about wanting or getting a house. Usually people who desire a house have a family under their care or they desire to have a family someday. In my opinion, living alone in a house can get quite boring and sometimes can also get a bit scary; especially with all that space.
I, on the other hand, do not desire a house. Don't get me wrong, I had moments where I imagined buying a house with many rooms, a basement, and/or attic.
Each room with its own color scheme. The basement - an arcade paradise with all the dance game varieties. The reading room - filled with bookshelves and a side of mirrors. The toy room - large area rug in the middle surrounded by showcases. The tech room - filled with gadgets and computers with the latest updates to get my business started. Three bedrooms, two separate kitchens, and two separate living areas with separate entrances for business purposes.
As detailed as the house is, I do not desire it. I would've, if I had people that I kept around to share it with. Sadly though, I'm a runner.
I desire quite the opposite: micro-apartments. I would like to live somewhere at or below 100 sq ft. I have read such apartments or rooms exist in most major cities. In NYC, the price for such a spot may be $1,000 or more compared to other countries.
In the Summer/Fall of 2013, I temporarily lived, with my son, in a 'micro' apartment in San Diego, CA. The apartment is between 125 sq ft to 150 sq ft and the rent was $900/month. It was the perfect size for me, but it was quite the opposite for my son. We had to move, due to a family emergency. At this moment and time, these apartments are being rented for $1,377. Yikes!
I currently reside in a 900 sq ft, two-bedroom, apartment with my son and roommate. My son and I have the smallest of the two rooms and even that room feels too big for me. We have been living in this apartment for many years and to be honest, no matter how many times I change stuff around, it doesn't feel like home. I am only staying here for my son's sake.
In the past, I thought I needed more space - like my own room -because I don't have a space of my own. My space is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. I even thought if my roommate moved out, this place would finally feel like home. I then realized that is not exactly the case.
After visiting NYC on my own, two times in the past two months, it occurred to me that I am definitely a fan of small spaces. The hotel-sized room of 229 sq ft to 362 sq ft was comfortable at first, but then it started feeling too spacious.
I remember curling myself up in the corner of the room, behind the ceiling to floor curtains, and looking down at the people outside. This made me feel more relaxed. It was like a little getaway section of the room; an escape from all the available empty space.
Someday I will live in a micro apartment. I would actually live in one right now, if I could. But, I do not live in a major city nor do I believe there is an apartment under 100 sq ft in my current area.
Right now, I’ll just deal with the vast space in front of me and suffer just a while longer until I can find a place to call home.
