Dragon Con on FACEBOOK
Dragon Con – The Origin Story
There was a time, before Dragon Con, when every convention focused on its one genre. Gaming conventions were for gamers, literature shows were for readers, and comic book shows were retail events. The established conventions were successful, and the organizers stuck to their formulas.
But most fans had multiple interests. It was certainly true for Dragon Con’s founders. They were all science fiction fans, but some of them also enjoyed gaming while others liked comic books. They could go to any convention and have a good time, but only for so long before boredom set in.
And that gave them an idea: Combine fandoms and genres into a single convention for fans who, like them, were interested in different things. In the early going, that meant bringing a science fiction convention and gaming convention together in the same hotel. While it doesn’t seem so radical today, it was audacious for its time and, eventually, it upended the staid convention scene.

The Shepherd
Tumblr media
The Shepherd Caliber Comics 2015 Written by Andrea Lorenzo Molinari & Roberto Xavier Molinari Illustrated by Kyle Huston, Cristobal Torres Iglesias, Bethany Varni Ryan Showers, Jess Hara Coloured by Heather Breckel Lettered by Jacob Bascle, David C. Hopkins     Professor Lawrence Miller lost his son Val to an overdose. Inconsolable, he could sense his son calling out from beyond the grave. Recklessly, Miller followed his son into the afterlife. After great turmoil and with the help of Franco, his long-deceased father, Lawrence and Val are reunited. Now they wander the "Seam," that ever-shifting place between this world and whatever comes next, helping other souls.     This is a three volume review, something that I normally don't do. There are a lot of artists involved here so trying to review a three volume set is extremely challenging and I am not a fan of trying to do this this way. It is also probably why I have been putting this off for so long I just am having a hard time trying to do this. Now we all know my mindset and where I am at so if I don't cover all the art that is here you know why.     Before I start let me say that I love that the writing is done by a father and son. It makes the connection that we see just that much more amazing. I get where the whole idea of how a father couldn't live without his son and the lengths he would go to to understand why things happened the way that they did. Also it is kind of heart-warming that a father and son could work together to create this and write it, granted if I tried something like this with my father someone would've gotten murdered just saying.     There is something to be said for reading all of these one after another and that's being able to see the writing grow and evolve. I like how the first volume saw the catalyst happen and from there it was not so easy going. For what happened here was as much a learning curve for the Professor as anything else and if he was going to be reunited with his son it was something that he had to learn. All of it happens in this completely interesting way, so much so that when I read volume two it took a different direction and it's one that makes slightly more sense to me. Still I appreciate the fact that the introduction to the characters happened the way they did.     The fact that this almost has same theme flowing through all the books but in different ways is an interesting route to take. Family above all, doing and staying together and being able to overcome whatever comes your way is a wonderful thing to see and the way it is presented has a great quality to it. Everything we see throughout all three volumes showcases character growth and evolution in ways that nice to see. The story & plot development and the character development that we are seeing here is stellar stuff, the way that information is revealed how the twists and turns that are delivered with this strong pacing really makes you sit up and take notice. Each book has a stellar ebb & flow and they read with such ease.     The interiors here varying from book to book, story to story. Art is the most subjective part of any comic as we all have our own tastes and preferences. I have a definite favourite and one is wish been the one artist throughout the series but that's a moot point. Each volume has one thing in common and that's the way page layouts are utilised and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels and how they show various eyes for storytelling. Each has good, solid and strong eyes as well. There are some that utilise backgrounds better than others and I am a huge believer in utilising them to their fullest potential. The colour work also depends on the linework and how we see the varying weights of the linework being utilised. The style has colour work to match and honestly I think there are moments that will stand out for everyone in different ways.      I like the idea behind this series. I like how each volume continues to grow, evolve and change the characters in visible ways. Start off the way we do and end where we do show a world of growth from the father/son writing duo and depending on their plans I wouldn't seeing either of them continue to pursue this solo. If see them at a convention scoop em up, or go to their website and check these and everything else they have to offer. www.calibercomics.com
