For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)

I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).

The general pitch is as follows :

AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.

In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.

They bond :)

Let's talk about the kiss again (Yes, I'm still yapping about the cinematic excellence because let's be honest, no one is moving on from that).

It's so fascinating to me the way the personalities of Jack and Joker are still evident even when they kiss.

We have Joker on one hand, the reckless/spontaneous one between them, who is clearly taking the lead in the kiss. He has something that he has wanted for so long so he's not gonna waste any time claiming that something to be his. Lord knows how many times he has fantasized about this, when this seemed like a far fetched dream. So who needs oxygen at this point when he could just breathe Jack in?

Then we have Jack who is the calmer one. He's someone who analyzes and thinks a lot. So at first, though he follows Joke's lead but he quickly gives in. He lets Joke take whatever it is he wanted from him. He also has been wanting that kiss for so long. But then he realizes that now that he finally has Joke in his arms, he would like to savor the moment. So, we see him pulling back, calming Joke down, letting them both catch their breath.

Well, he's also a little shit so we see him teasing Joke before finally giving in.

So, the second time around, they are both on the same page and they let the moment linger.

Oh Mr. Yin Anan Wong and Mr. War Wanarat Ratsameerat, the actors you are.

I had a dream tonight about putting exposition into footnotes. like, a new concept is introduced, but instead of explaining it in the narration, you put it into footnotes (on certain occasions when the explanation is not terribly revelant to the plot). in the dream it seemed like a fantastic idea and ngl I think it'd be kinda funny and silly. but would it be TOO silly....

"Why does it have to be you again?"

This one line from Jack has a whole book load of things left unsaid.

When Jack first met Joke, he was a naive 18 years old boy who had been forced to grow up because of his circumstances. He had been betrayed by someone whom he considered to be a father figure. He had been looked down upon by various parts of society because of his poor background and lack of education.

Joke, who seemed like a happy-go-lucky fellow, who shouldered the huge burden of family expectations. Someone who shared his deepest secret with Jack. Someone who was easy to talk to. Someone who believed in Jack's dream when others had probably ridiculed it.

He met Joke again when he was deep into debt and had been forced to put on a ruthless persona to get by. He had no hope left for his life or for himself. But no matter how hard he pushed Joke away, he still came back looking for the bubbly boy whom Jack had long buried.

"Why does it have to be you again?"

Joke reopened the box of dreams that Jack had locked and thrown away the key of. He taught him to dream again, to live again. And then he promised the most important thing, to never leave Jack's side.

He helped Jack get out of the grasp of Boss and actually live his life the way he wanted. They both went through hell but it didn't matter because they were together in the journey. They found love (and even adopted a daughter along the way), so it started to seem that Luck was finally smiling at Jack.

But now he finds out that despite so much assurance about turning a new leaf, about not doing anything "stupid" to help him, Joke had once again broken his trust and was an active instigator of the absolute mayhem happening around them.

"Why does it have to be you again?"

Because it all feels part of a cycle. Joke is always the one who encourages Jack to dream and then he is the one who crushes those dreams with his bare hands. He makes him believe in love and life again and then he is the one to break his heart in the most brutal way.

He has just found out that his friend had betrayed him and had put the life of his grandma at danger. He has just found out that Toi Ting has been admitted to the hospital because of the mayhem. And now he finds out that his own boyfriend may have had a part to play in this mess.

It's not just his anger at Joke but also the guilt, the helplessness, the frustration regarding the situation. Because it would be easier to blame all of this on Save than accept the reality.

So, yeah, "why does it have to be you again?"

I think something we're sleeping on in the Gale epilogue is that he says he wants to try writing books about our adventures, which directly puts him in competition with Volo, who is also writing about the same adventures

This would--inevitably--devolve into a writer/academic feud for the ages, spreading copious misinformation to the masses as both writers can accurately claim to be primary sources, with wildly different tellings between them. There will be synthesis commentary papers written about both of their works by historians for centuries, and even though Volo's is full of blatant lies it must be considered because he is....well, Volo. and, like, he was verifiably there and involved with everything. there is no world where that is not infuriating to an academic like Gale. Gale will be blowing a gasket for the rest of his life about being in competition with Volo's Tome of Lies. There will be sniping in the footnotes of all his papers at the bard for the rest of his life. Bitter bard vs academic warfare, that's what we're looking at here

also btw that passage about media consumption as activism and the idea of "gayboring" (this post) are twin sisters to me because when you see media consumption as activism and therefore as a reflection of real life, any gritty or unsavory or "weird" aspects of any marginalized culture/community gets completely sanitized in favor of portraying an "ideal" form of that community in the eyes of consumerism (i.e.: boring and safe and non-confrontational)
