Every time I see writing advice like 'remember to stretch your wrists!' I remember the horror my physiotherapist had when he learned I was stretching my wrists before writing but also had chronic nerve pain.
Now this is important. It's nerve pain. He stared at me and then said: Stop stretching.
I stared at him in shock and he said: Muscular pain is different from nerve pain. Stop stretching. Nerves don't respond to stretching like muscles do, it's two totally different treatments. Don't believe me? Stop stretching until our next session and tell me how you go.
And folks I've been free from nerve pain in my wrists ever since. After about a decade. And that's 2 straight years now. 2 years.
I still get muscular pain, which I stretch when that comes up and only when it comes up. But the specific pain I had from ulnar nerve impingement in both hands completely vanished. I was unknowingly making it worse because I thought stretching the nerves was the same as stretching the muscles, and thought the answer applied to everything.
(Tl;dr everyone is different. My physiotherapist is studying to become a medical doctor and will quit out of the field soon, but I always appreciated that everything he told me was solidly backed up with peer-reviewed studies and never came out of nowhere. Also his 'try it for a month and see' was so much better than 'I know I'm right' - because it left a door open for the people who realise what they thought was nerve pain was probably muscular in origin).
#personal#nerve pain vs. muscle pain#different treatments for different things#any writing advice telling you to stretch your wrists#CANNOT be applied universally#until you know exactly what's causing your pain#and friends if it's carpal tunnel or guyon's canal or ulnar nerve#the best treatment is actually resting your wrists#and not stretching#if the stretching is helping chances are there's muscular stuff going on too#anyway i'm not a doctor#but it's worth trying salkfjdsa#also i'm allowed to do other stretching#i just had to unpack the myth that stretching relieves nerves#the same way it relieves muscles/tendons

going through another round of "what if i got a cane would my life be easier with a cane should i get a cane" hmmmm
#ctxt#chronic blogging#i'd probably hold off until i'm further into treatment to see if it improves things enough to remove the (maybe??) need#but a lil extra support sure would be nice#i don't really have trouble walking usually. occasionallygetting up from sitting is hard#mainly it just FUCKING HURTS standing still for longer than a couple minutes#and flamingoing it to put all my weight on one foot isn't very comfortable either#i feel like it would increase comfort a lot to be able to distribute my weight more evenly between my good side & a cane#but i'm not sure if it would make enough of a difference to be worth lugging a cane around and having it be in the way when not in use#i would want something made of lightweight wood and with enough of a curve to the handle that i could hook it over my elbow#to keep it outta the way. or get one of those wrist straps#idk my mobility isn't really limited but i am in a lot of pain frequently and standing without something to lean on makes it a lot worse#cane users please feel free to weigh in

Advanced Hand, Wrist & Nerve Centre - Everything You Need to Know About Wrist Arthritis Treatment
Wrist arthritis is a condition that affects the joints in the wrist, causing pain, stiffness, and difficulty in movement. The wrist joint includes several small bones, ligaments, and tendons that work together for smooth movement. When the cartilage that cushions the joints wears away, it can lead to inflammation, swelling, and pain. It can complicate everyday activities such as gripping, twisting, or lifting objects.
While the condition is incurable, several wrist pain treatment options are available to manage the pain and improve mobility. In Singapore, these treatments may include medication, physiotherapy, splinting, or in severe cases, surgery. We will go over each of them later on.
If you are experiencing wrist pain, you may want to seek medical attention as soon as possible to identify the cause and develop an appropriate wrist pain treatment plan. With proper care and management, most people with wrist arthritis can continue to carry out their daily activities with minimal pain and discomfort.
What are the Possible Risk Factors for Wrist Arthritis?
Wrist arthritis is a painful and debilitating condition that can severely impact a person's quality of life. While the exact cause of wrist arthritis is unknown, several risk factors increase a person's chances of developing the condition. Today, we will discuss some of the most common risk factors for wrist arthritis.
Previous injuries
One of the primary risk factors for wrist arthritis is a history of wrist injuries such as distal radius fractures or wrist fracture. These injuries can damage the cartilage and bones in the wrist, increasing the likelihood of developing arthritis.
Genetics
Other risk factors for wrist arthritis include genetics, age, and gender. Women are more likely than men to develop wrist arthritis, and the risk increases with age. Genetics also play a role in the development of arthritis, as some people may be predisposed to the condition due to their family history.
Overworked Wrists
Certain occupations involving repetitive wrist movements, such as typing or using machinery, can also increase the risk of developing wrist arthritis. Additionally, conditions such as obesity and diabetes can increase the risk of developing arthritis in any joint, including the wrist.
Are you at risk of developing wrist arthritis? There's no need to fret. Several wrist arthritis treatment plans are proven to alleviate the pain. They will help you do your regular tasks while living with the condition.
What are the Possible Treatments or Pain Management Methods?
Wrist arthritis can be a painful and debilitating condition that can impact a person's ability to carry out daily activities. Fortunately, several wrist arthritis treatment options are available to help manage the pain and improve mobility. We will discuss some of the most common treatments for wrist arthritis.
Wrist Pain Treatment
One of the first lines of treatment for wrist arthritis is medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. In more severe cases, prescription medications such as corticosteroids or disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) may be necessary.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy can also be a wrist pain treatment in Singapore. A physical therapist can develop an exercise program to help improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the wrist. Additionally, using splints or braces can help provide support and alleviate pain.
Surgery
In severe cases of wrist arthritis, surgery may be necessary. Surgical options may include joint replacement, joint fusion, or arthroscopy.
In Singapore, there are several treatment options available for wrist arthritis. If you are experiencing wrist pain, it is vital to seek medical attention to identify the cause and develop an appropriate wrist pain treatment plan. With proper care and management, most people with wrist arthritis can continue to carry out their daily activities with minimal pain and discomfort. Visit Advanced Hand, Wrist & Nerve Centre today for treatments!

Unmasking Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: The Uncommon and Peculiar Syndromes
It all starts with a wrist sprain. When left unchecked, it gradually grows even more painful. And before you know it, you will need a hand specialist in Singapore to get this treated and to recover. One of the conditions you need to watch out for is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). This prevalent condition affects countless individuals, especially those engaging in repetitive hand movements or poor wrist posture. While most people associate CTS with tingling and numbness in the hands and fingers, several other common and unusual syndromes could indicate the presence of this condition.
UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNS OF CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
The Double Crush Syndrome
Double Crush Syndrome is a noteworthy phenomenon that often coexists with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Singapore. This syndrome occurs when compression or irritation of nerves occurs at multiple points along their pathway. For instance, if there's already pressure on the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, any additional pressure on the nerve further up the arm or neck can exacerbate CTS symptoms. Identifying the Double Crush Syndrome is crucial for comprehensive treatment planning.
Tinel's Sign
Named after the French neurologist Jules Tinel, Tinel's Sign is a unique indicator of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. When gently tapping or pressing on the median nerve in the wrist's carpal tunnel, patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Singapore experience tingling or electric-like sensations that radiate into the hand and fingers. A hand specialist can perform this test to help confirm the presence of CTS.
Fromageot's Sign
Fromageot's Sign is an intriguing but less-known clinical sign of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It involves worsening CTS symptoms when the wrist is flexed or bent for a prolonged period. If you notice the hand discomfort increases while bending your wrist, consult a hand specialist in Singapore promptly.
Phalen's Maneuver
Phalen's Maneuver is a simple yet effective test for CTS diagnosis. By pressing the backs of your hands together and holding the wrist flexed for about a minute, you may experience a tingling sensation or numbness in the fingers. This sensation indicates potential median nerve compression in the carpal tunnel. This symptom suggests you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Singapore and may need assistance.
Raynaud's Phenomenon
Raynaud's Phenomenon is a condition characterised by restricted blood flow to the fingers and toes. This condition can sometimes be associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Singapore. Individuals with CTS may experience worsening symptoms during episodes of Raynaud's, making it an essential clue for diagnosis.
The Bishop's Hand
This unique syndrome presents as a combination of CTS and Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome. The Bishop's Hand gets marked by weakness and tingling sensations in both the thumb and little finger, while the other fingers remain unaffected. This distinctive symptom of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Singapore pattern is a red flag for both conditions. Moreover, it requires immediate attention.
Nerve Conduction Studies
Though not a syndrome per se, nerve conduction studies are a vital diagnostic tool. Hand specialists in Singapore can confirm Carpal Tunnel Syndrome through this. This test measures the speed and efficiency of nerve signals, helping doctors identify the location and severity of nerve compression.
Wrapping Up!
Be it CTS or not. As soon as you feel wrist pain, seek treatment in Singapore as soon as possible. What do you do when you suspect any of these syndromes or experience unexplained hand discomfort? Consult a hand specialist immediately. Don't let the early signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome go unnoticed. Seek professional care from our skilled hand specialists in Singapore at Advanced Hand, Wrist & Nerve Centre. Take the first step towards a pain-free future by scheduling an appointment with us today! Your hands deserve the best care possible.
