WIP Wednesday - Crow Fic

Taking a small break from Bird Grandpas to write about the other bird I adore, Crow! Will be the first part of a two part mini-series.

Crow was starting to like the European Dead Zone, and that was dangerous. Things he liked had a tendency to not stay around for long under the Spider’s employment. He swallowed, as though he could push down the inevitability that one day, likely soon, he would never return to this place; that he would once again be condemned to the eternal twilight of The Tangled Shore, never again to feel the light of Sol on his face or smell fresh, ether-free air as it moved through green trees. 

Crow let out a shaky breath, his hopes leaving with it, as he refocused on crafting the lure in his lap. It was different from the ones he normally made on the Shore, modified to attract high-ranking Taken. He did not fully understand the shift in the Guardian’s interest from Wraithborn to Taken, but if it got him off the Shore for days at a time, he was not going to argue. 

Speaking of, the Guardian was late. Again. At least, he thought they were late from what Crow could tell as he peered at the sun through the evergreen branches above him. He was well hidden, as usual, from both other Guardians as well as the Fallen that often patrolled the area, but the Guardian he worked with knew where to meet him. He listened carefully as he continued to work, waiting for the sound of an incoming transmat or the loud snap of a twig to alert him to the Guardian’s arrival. Instead, all he heard was the sound of flowing water, the rustle of the wind through the forest, and the sound of a Fallen dropship departing. 

Then he heard a scream.

I'll admit I'm interested (not excited, mind you, simply interested) in Starfield. But I've made the decision not to purchase it until Ms. Faren gets justice for the shit ZeniMax Online Studios put her through. That doesn't just mean this one lawsuit about the company not honoring her COBRA insurance, it means an apology, compensation, and supervised changes to the corporate policies, culture, and structure of not only ZeniMax Online Studios, but ZeniMax Media and all of its subsidiaries to ensure the company never treats anyone like this ever again.

And it's not just Starfield. ZeniMax Media owns Bethesda Softworks (who owns Bethesda Game Studios, who developed Starfield, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, etc.), yes, but they also own Alpha Dog Games (Wraithborne, MonstroCity: Rampage, Ninja Golf, Mighty Doom), Arkane Studios (Dishonored, Prey, Deathloop, Redfall), id Software (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Rage), MachineGames (also Wolfenstein), Roundhouse Studios/Human Head Studios (Rune, the original Prey), Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Hi-Fi Rush), and ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online, Doom, Fallout 76) who directly harmed Ms. Faren. I'm avoiding buying anything by any of these companies until ZeniMax makes amends to Ms. Faren's satisfaction, because paying any one of them means in some way paying the people responsible for harming Ms. Faren.

As far as I know, she hasn't asked for any kind of boycott or for consumers to avoid purchasing these games, so this is solely a decision I'm making for myself based on what I want my money to go to (or not go to, in this case). I'm under no illusions that this will bring any of these companies to their knees, begging to do the right thing, but it does mean that I personally won't be enabling this mistreatment, and I think that's plenty worth not playing a few video games. I suggest others who feel the same way do the same.

Ms. Faren continued to be without health insurance until September 25, 2022, resulting in high priced prescription drug payments, as well as physician and hospital bills, many of which she was not aware of for months following services. ..." Even the most well-intentioned human resources departments don’t actually exist to help employees. They exist to protect the company from getting sued. That’s their main function. In Faren’s case, that happened in a straightforward way when her health coverage was held hostage so she wouldn’t file a discrimination lawsuit. But HR departments do this in more subtle ways, too. ...

Now, here’s another thing to note. Obsidian is also under Microsoft. Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas and Bethesda was the publisher. This creates some questions about the state of New Vegas. Will there be a remaster, a sequel, will merch be released?

I want to see more of this. I want to see Ynnari get their own units, or at least unique variants of existing units. Perhaps there could be an upgrade sprue, with a bunch of different weapons for Wraithguard/blades to use. These Reborn Wraiths (Wraithborn?) would have better stats, to show that they’re more awakened, and they can use a wider variety of weapons, like they did when they were mortal.

I’m thinking Shuriken Cannons, Fusion weapons, missile launchers, chainswords with a stealth special rule, maybe a heavy lasblaster? Can Dark Eldar become wraith constructs? Could you see Wraithguard with splinter cannons, or Wraithblades with razorflails?
