"I am Worm Horse, and I... I am sad."
"Why are you sad, Worm Horse?" "Because! I have no legs!"
"Oh... Well that's okay!"
"I lost my legs in the war!" "(gasp) The war?!"
"Yes! The great pirate war!" "No. No pirates."
"The great pirate war!" "If you keep talking about pirates, I will punch you."
...
"I fought bravely, but I could not run fast enough-"
"They took my legs! There was blood everywhere!"
"Oh no, ew, no blood! Blood is disgusting!" "No? It's cool! (laughing)"
"Well, Banana Pudding is here to save the day!"
"With his magical feet he dances around with, he will dance all over Worm Horse and make him feel better!"
"And then... There will be more blood!"
Please leave Worm Horse alone, he doesn't need more blood. :((
I know the Worm Horse comparison/foreshadowing has been pointed out a million times before, but I love it (and hate it) so much that I had to do this. Here's to hoping there will not actually be more blood for Worm Horse.

i think a lions mane jellyfish would be cool! if youd like to continue to be cursed, id love to see what youd for a sea urchin or starfish mermaid 🧜♀️
If science of specbio intrigues you, please follow my worldbuilding blog at @worldofvonder
So mermaids are fish, straight up. Anything non-fish is not a mermaid. I do take non-fish requests! But they will either be magical creatures that are not mermaids, or they will just not be canon to my world.
There are many aquatic creatures that are not fish, and are in fact not even in the phylum chordata. "Phylum" is the first category of biology in taxonomy, which is the study of classifications.
Source: major animal phyla (video lecture!)
The kingdoms of life are: animals, plants, and fungus. Within the animal kingdom, the next step of sorting is phyla. Chordata includes vertebrates (and other animals that have a spinal cord but no bones) and it does not include jellyfish, crustaceans, octopus, and lots of other things. Interestingly, it is believed that chordata and echinoderma share a common ancestor, but they are still different phyla.
Mermaids arose from a ray finned fish, in the clade Actinopterygii. They speciated from there to become the dominant life form of the oceans. Mermaids have a process that allows groups to take on a form that is analogous to a mundane fish. If that fish evolved to eat algae, the mermaid takes on those traits while still able to eat meat. This kinship is not limited to other ray-finned fish, but encompasses many vertebrates that are commonly called "fish." This includes sharks and jawless fish like hagfish. It can include lobe-finned fish like coelacanth, but does not include tetrapods. Tetrapod creatures that resemble mermaids may be centaurs. Centaurs have a completely different origin than mermaids.
Mermaids do not have kin in other phyla. If an invertebrate resembles a human, it is through another evolutionary path than "fish that mimics humans to eat them"
Aquatic creatures and their "mermaid" (humanoid) creature counterparts
Chordata: Fish (cartiligeous, ray finned, lobe finned): Mermaids Seals and sea lions: Selkies (selkies are a subspecies of human) Whales and dolphins: selkie-mermaid hybrids: mammalmers
Arthropoda (crustaceans, arachnids, insects): fairies Mollusca: (slugs, clams, octopus): Magic mirrors Echinoderma (sea cucumbers, starfish, urchins, sanddollars): undiscovered Cnidaria (jellyfish and anemones) and Ctenophora: undiscovered
sponges, anything resembling worms, anything not mentioned: undiscovered
Many phylums have branches that superficially resemble humans despite being completely unrelated to us and each other. This phenomenon is known as anthropisation (not anthropization, which is humans changing landscapes). But don't go thinking humans are special. The same thing happens with horses.
wow there's a lot here. You're welcome lol

Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana, Brassicaceae - Mustard Family)
an extended version of this materia media can be found on the Patreon - where I share some gastronomic/culinary commentaries on horseradish
"The root's potent smell can be attributed to allyl isothiocyanate, or Mustard oil, which is released when the plant's skin is broken or disturbed. Similar to other members of the Brassicaceae family, this constituent is also found in Brussels sprouts, Mustard, and Turnips."
"In Greek mythology, the Delphic Oracle told Apollo, 'The Radish is worth its weight in lead, the Beet its weight in silver, the Horseradish its weight in gold.'"
"To a worm in a horseradish, the world is a horseradish” - Yiddish Proverb
Gardening: full sun to part shade; well draining loose or sandy soil; regular water; room to spread and grow deep, often takes over more space than expected; thrives even when neglected; herbaceous perennial
Native Region: Russia & Eastern Ukraine
Season: autumn and winter (hardy to zone 5)
Affinity: sinuses, lungs, digestive system, circulation
Parts: roots and leaves
Medicinal: fire cider/oxymels, cold-water infusion, succus (fresh juice), cough syrup, poultice for sprains/injuries, tincture, culinary measures
"Grated horseradish mixed with honey [or vegan alternative]. After mixing, allow to stand to take off sharp taste. The [sweetener] is only used to make it more palatable. 2/3 horse-radish and 1/3 [sweetener], or to suit the taste. The ordinary radish, especially the black radish, may also be used the same way, or finely sliced and eaten alone as a salad. For consumptives who cough without spitting, give a spoonful every once in a while." - Special "Mucus-Eliminator" Recipe in Arnold Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System
^I like to add grated orange peel to help make it more manageable to taste^
Actions: diuretic, stimulant, expectorant, rubefacient, aphrodisiac, digestive, antiseptic (laxative), aperient, anthelmintic, emetic (in high doses)
‼when you cut into horseradish, its pungent smell can irritate the eyes and nasal passages, so it's better to do in a well-ventilated area or outside. It is more potent in its effect than onions. The taste is also very pungent, so you don't need much.
Energetic Uses (eg. flower essence, elemental rituals): FIRE ELEMENT - balance fiery nature, excite inner fire, move you beyond sense of being stuck/helpless, shine a light on blockages, release old patterns or thoughtforms
Indications: hoarse, persistent, dry cough; rheumatism; tuberculosis; kidney stones; parasite infections; cold; congestion
Analogs: wasabi, radish, mustard, brussels sprouts, moringa (Moringa oleifera)
Traditional Uses:
Ancient Greeks & Romans: rub for lower back pain or menstrual cramps, aphrodisiac
Middle Ages: asthma, arthritis, cancer, toothaches
Jewish: bitter herb for Passover seder
Native Americans: toothaches, menstrual cramps
British: accompaniment to beef and oysters, cordials
Scurvy preventative
Treatment for tuberculosis
Restoring color and freshness to skin (cosmetic usage)
Modern Ideas:
"The enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a useful
tool for detecting antibodies in the molecular biology field."
"In 2008, researchers reported that they had developed a fire alarm for the deaf and hard of hearing by harnessing the strong smell of horseradish."
"Researchers from Pennsylvania State University announced in 1995 that according to their studies, using horseradish may help purify wastewater and tainted soils."

What can prevent AI from wirelessly "device-hopping into "other devices that are AI-compatible" and "interacting with other "AI and/or other etc""" if the AI is already on an ""AI-compatible device" that is wirelessly connected to the internet"?
I agree with this answer that someone else wrote on Quora:
AI (today) is software. Long before AI existed in any form recognized today, malicious hackers and cyber criminals were already creating software viruses and “worms” (aka “malware”).
Infection:
They might begin their initial infection by tricking the user/owner into installing software that was “Trojan” - secretly containing codes that the user did not expect to be there (analogous to the famous “Trojan Horse”). Occasionally, discovered system software flaws not yet patched by proper updates will even allow fully-remote code/command execution (RCE). This means, a hacker sitting at their keyboard and knowing your device IP address could issue commands to your device that take action, including the installation of malware behind your back. A good firewall - or anti-virus software - between your device and the Internet is the best way to prevent this sort of infection.
Of course, if a hacker can do this manually, then a hacker can write software that will do this automatically, while they sleep, against thousands of potential victim machines.
Propagation:
Once your system is infected, it can do many things behind your back, even while you are there using your system. It might capture your keyboard strokes, looking for when you type passwords. It might steal information. It might even encrypt your data, which is as good as erasing it unless you obtain the key needed to decrypt it, which they (their software) might offer to you for a price (aka “ransomware”). But even while you sleep (if you have not shut down your device entirely), the malware can attempt to access your device networking system to try to infect other devices on your local (home/business) network - called “lateral transmission”, or access the Internet to spread itself to other devices across the globe.
(ASIDE: Cyber criminal groups will even go so far as to create websites that “look like” your ISP, or your system software vendor, or banking website, and then send you an email that “looks like” it came from that service (called “phishing”) explaining that you need to “Click On This Link” to access an important security upgrade - log-in (give away your log-in credentials), download (the malware of their choice), etc. LESSON! Do NOT click on links embedded in unexpected and unsolicited emails or texts! Instead, use your browser to GO STRAIGHT to the real vendor website in question, and see if the so-called “important upgrade” is real or bogus.)
Artificial Intelligence:
Even AI that has no “self-agency” (ability to act on its own) can be designed to use the very same tricks that typical malware employs to infect other systems. In fact, cyber-criminals and government agencies that deploy malware for their respective missions are already embedding AI in their malware to make it more effective in exploiting the systems they infect.
I don’t know when the day will come that AI gains such self-agency/autonomy that it acts irrespective of its creators controls or intent. If and when it does, AI will be able to employ all of the tricks that exist to spread itself to other systems. It may do so “on the wire”, or “wirelessly” (WiFi), or via cellular networks. It may even sneak itself onto USB (physical plug-in) devices, and wait for those devices to be plugged into new systems.
Prevention:
The only possible prevention is the very same that helps to prevent your system from being infected by routine malware or hackers. Keeping your system and software patched with the latest system and software updates, using good antivirus software to filter out malicious access attempts and prevent execution of unrecognized software are paramount. Also, as mentioned above, use good cyber hygiene - do NOT cooperate with unsolicited/unexpected phishing emails that ask you to do things.
As things advance, your defenses may well need to include AI that can try to keep up with the AI-powered malware attempting to exploit your system.
This is an “Arms Race” and the future is uncertain.

Food in Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 3
It is over. I finally finished season 3 about 2 hours ago and needed the time to recover and process the ending. While I have only faint memories of the ending in the book, this ending seemed very different (and I want to say I liked it more? I just recall being let down by the way the books ended; however, I was quite young at the time...).
Here is the final set of food notes from the show. The final season was comparatively sparse, but there were some interesting culinary choices. I hope you enjoy!
(Also, since this is the final installment, if anyone enjoyed my rambling carefully curated notes on food in TV shows, I would happily take requests to do this for a different show in the future. It was fun and gave me much to think about in the kitchen.)
Today’s notes are brought to you by Glassworks - Opening played by Ólafsson (because that I what I’m listening to).
Food in The Slippery Slope
Sarsaparilla
What Olaf drinks and discards while driving. It is flat. The bottle helps Violet and Klaus determine which fork to take.
Coffee and Tea
What pretentious people drink according to Olaf
Absinthe
A random beverage that popped into Olaf’s mind.
Marshmallows
Made Brucie the Snow Scout Leader sick after eating too many.
I really want to make these! Gelatin is such a fun platform for cooking so many things! The real goal would be blooming marshmallow flowers with whiskied caramel hot chocolate!
Rutabaga
What the circus freaks plan on growing on their farm.
Hot Dogs
What Olaf’s cooks with this troupe.
Brandy Sidecar or Coffee
What Esme wants with Breakfast.
A Brandy sidecar is a cocktail of cognac, cointreau (orange flavored liqueur), and lemon juice. Sounds pretty tasty -- I think (I know next to nothing about drinks...).
Frozen Orange Juice
Found by Sunny in trunk.
She uses this to make Sorbet.
Salmon
Caught in the stricken stream by Hook-handed man and given to Sunny. She prepares Sashimi with this.
Hot Cider [X]
Quigley’s last meal with his mother. What saved him from the fire.
Canned Peaches
Quigley’s meal at Montgomery’s.
Montgomery had a lot of canned peaches (or just two cans) because the Hook handed man in season 1 is also eating canned peaches when posing as a detective. Nothing wrong with this -- canned peaches are delicious.
Poisonous Berries
Mr. Poe tries to help by finding Breakfast.
I often see poisonous berries as red in TV (I am thinking mostly of a specific seen in the Netflix Witcher series) and it made me curious if real poison berries are always red. Nope: nightshade (duh) is black, and several other harmful berries are also black/blue. Some are orange. Given the brightness of these berries I am going to guess they were Mezereon or Elderberry.
Granola Bar
Mr. Poe has these. Kit has some.
Poe always has granola bars.
Lox
Sunny’s idea for dinner
Pistachios
Lemony is saying something and thinks they are for everyone one.
Parsley Soda
What Sunny gets when she requests a fizzy drink.
Boysenberry Jam
The darkest Jam in the VFD fridge.
This really makes me want good jam or to try jamming. Roasted lamb and jam...not sure where I would easily source lamb right now and is likely to be a far greater headache than I care.
Olives
There were 5 green olives filled with pimento in the jar. It indicated the gathering was on Thursday.
Mustard
All I wrote is the last safe place. I don’t recall the details -- but it was probably a clue.
Mustard is my favorite condiment. I can (and have) eat it plain.
False spring rolls
What was prepared for a meal for Olaf’s troupe by Sunny and Hook handed man.
How did they get wraps on a mountain...maybe you can repurpose a part of a fish to use as wraps. The skin or various internal linings? Seems less appetizing / food safe.
Rutabaga (again)
What Olaf’s troupe wants to grow.
Food in The Grim Grotto
Chewing Gum
Phil only cooks meals with chewing gum.
Chewy Casserole
Chewing gum casserole.
In my experience heating gum or gummy like things often goes very poorly. You can add them towards the end of the cooking process to create some sort of layer -- but definitely not from the start.
Potato and Cod Chowder
Non-gum based meal that Sunny and Phil prepared.
Calamari
What Sunny thinks Olaf’s sonar symbol is.
I fully accept that the children are seriously smart, but where is Sunny learning all of this? Did the books have cooking books (I think so..)? I shall assume that Sunny demands to be read only cooking books as bed time stories.
Soft Pretzels
Olaf wants these. I do too -- I should make them!
Turmeric
In one of Esme’s evil laughs.
Cabernet
Olaf wants wine and gets lost in the octopus submarine looking for some. He pronounces it as Caber-NET.
Horseradish
Cure for the Medusoid Mycelium.
Taragon, Wasabi
Contents of kitchen cabinets while Sunny is sick.
The wasabi is what is used as a culinary substitute and cure. Interestingly, it is Mr. Bobby brand. Would anyone know if this has significance? Brand names in this universe are interesting.
Lemon Lime Soda, Gorgonzola Cheese, Birthday cake for Violet
Contents of the fridge while Klaus and Violet are looking for horse radish.
That is a damn impressive cake. Fondant is really well done. Can you make fondant from gum? Probably not, but Sunny is resourceful and likely found a suitable culinary substitute.
Sub Sandwich
Prepared by Hook-Handed man to delay Olaf form assisting in torturing the children.
Looks like a pretty standard sub on a softer baguette. It appeared to have sliced deli meat.
Chef Salad
Fernald’s analogy for people to emphasize that categorizing people as noble, good, bad, or evil is invalid.
Pig Eating Pork
Ok -- this one is not food, but I was amused by Olaf’s simile to describe his joy.
Food in The Penultimate Peril
The Picnic Basket
I absolutely lost my mind with this scene. We only briefly see the contents of the picnic basket as Violet removes the top layer to reveal the concierge disguises Kit prepared. I paused and replayed this seen maybe 10 times to examine what was in that top layer. I then needed to cross reference some incomplete descriptions with two large pastry books (thankfully they have an entrement section...). I feel reasonably successful:
Millefeuille [X]
This is napoleon. Adding a flavor to the custard is a great way to modernize this dessert.
Cream Puffs (Might be a profiterole) [X -- I’ve done eclairs]
Choux pastry is very forgiving and a good entry point into fancier pastries. It forms the basis of eclairs, cream puffs, and, if you are crazy, croquembouche.
3 Layer cake
Unclear what more to say. Since these are all french pastries, perhaps the sponge is genoise?
Mini Opera Cake
Opera cake is layers of Joconde sponge (almond sponge) flavored with coffee syrup, layered with italian butter cream, and then topped with chocolate ganache. It was something I planned on making before everything closed down (I can’t eat it myself X.x).
Madeleine or Beignet [X]
Since this was a picnic basket, I am leaning in favor of Madeleines. They fit the other set of deserts better than a Beignet.
Nut Entrement
I think is this another cake, but it is unclear. I can’t seem to source this one either. Maybe it is carrot cake! That often has nuts around the perimeter.
Sauvignon Blanc
Olaf’s wine of choice
Aqueous Martini
Jerome’s drink of choice.
Indian Food
Larry, in his last waiter position, poses in an Indian Restaurant. Poe orders a glass of milk.
The Barking Gin Distiller Dry Goods
Interesting brand on the bag belonging to a lady on the trolley during the sequence when Justice Strauss is searching for the Children.
Tea
In flash back with Kit and Esme. Kit likes her tea as bitter as worm wood and sharp as a double edged sword.
Sausages
Crow meat and an analogy for learning the Law (you don’t want to know how the sausage is made, just like you don’t want to know how the law works).
Too much pepper and makes the court audience cough.
Food in The End
Root Beer Float [X]
Lemony has one. It is his thirteenth.
Waffles
Partially consumed by the man following Lemony at the diner.
Mixed Nuts
All that is left to eat on the boat. Sunny offers some to Olaf, but he knocks it into the sea.
Ceviche
Since the islanders don’t have any spice, they eat raw fish.
I have never had this, but recall reading in a book about sushi how it was integrated by some sushi chefs in South America into more traditional Japanese cuisine.
Fermented Coconut Cordial
I have no idea how you could get anything resembling an opioid from fermenting coconut water. Unless Ish is adding something, this seems suspect. Fermenting something sweet and earthy also does not really sound appealing.
Wasabi and Wormwood
Sunny’s suggestions on how to treat the Medusoid Mycelium.
Wormwood and related foods appear often.
Apple
Modified by Bertrand and Beatrice to contain the sugars giving immunity to the Medusoid Mycelium.
Chocolate Cake [X]
SQUEEE this was adorable. Sunny makes a cake for Beatrice II’s first birthday.
Salad
Shared by Fiona and Fernald.
Root Beer Float
Shared between Lemony and Beatrice II as she tells him the remaining story.
I want to believe that this is his 14th root beer float.
Black Bean and Mango Salad
Sunny makes this during the Finnish Female Pirates incident as told by Beatrice II.
This sounds amazing! Slightly ripe mango with a citrusy black bean mixture would be delightful!
