As a matter of fact, I do have a favorite animal. It’s the BINTURONG, also know as a bearcat. And today happens to be #WorldBinturongDay! 🍿 This is an old photo of Bandar, the guy responsible for my deep love and passion for binturongs. Bandar was the first binturong I had ever worked with and our relationship forever changed me. He has since passed away, but he lives on in my heart and I see him in the eyes of every binturong I meet. 🍿 As an ambassador for his species, Bandar met countless people over the years. Some people knew of the binturong, but had never seen one before. But honestly, most people had no idea what he was. When I told them, “He’s a binturong” the response was almost always, “A bintur-what!?” But within a few minutes of meeting Bandar and learning more about binturongs, they fell in love with him and his kind. Even more important, Bandar helped me. "A fine male specimen of the Binturong was presented to the Zoological Society in 1855, by Mrs. Samuel Rawson, and lived in good health nearly eleven years in the Gardens. It is believed to have been the only example of this scarce animal ever exhibited alive in Europe."

Why do I love binturongs so much? ✔️Sharp-grippy hooked claws & back feet that can rotate 180 degrees to help when climbing head down. ✔️ A long prehensile (grasping) tail, also awesome for climbing. ✔️ Course thick coat that’s pretty much water-proof, but also breathes well. ✔️ Omnivorous, so if hunting doesn’t go well, can easily climb a tree and have fruit salad. ✔️ Oh, and they smell like buttered popcorn. 🍿 . . . . . #WorldBinturongDay #BestAnimalEver #wildlifeeducation #gobearcats #binturong #bearcat

Yes, I just reposted my own content- It’s from Popcorn day but soooo appropriate for today #WorldBinturongDay! ・・・ Happy #NationalPopcornDay - or as I see it, “national talk (more) about binturongs day”😁 As you probably already know, binturongs, also known as bearcats, tend to smell like fresh buttered-popcorn. But why, you ask? Glad you asked. Though they do have a scent gland, that’s not what causes the popcorn smell. There is a specific chemical compound found in their urine (specifically 2-AP) that once it comes in contact with a bacteria found on the binturong (think feet and tail) it makes the buttered popcorn smell! 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 #PopcornButt #Binturong #bearcat #amazinganimals #zoo #sdzoo #sandiegozoo #lovebinturong #conservation #endangeredspecies #wildlifeeducation

Happy #WorldBinturongDay! Here's an #AnimalFact about binturongs: Although they have the dentition (arrangement of the teeth) of a carnivore, binturongs are omnivorous. For my last #WorldBinturongDay post, I decided to post a photo of the #binturong who taught me more than I can explain. This is Bandar. And some of those lessons he taught me included the art of training based on a relationship. He taught me about myself. About trust. He made me a better presenter by teaching me to work with what was going in the moment, even if it meant going "off script" a little bit. So hat-tip to Bandar, the binturong who will forever be part of my life. And hey, if you are still reading this, thanks! Here's one more #AnimalFact for you: Binturongs are listed a vulnerable, but because they live in habitat that is heavily sought after for agriculture it's possible we will see a shift in their listing. What can you do? Glad you asked. As consumers we can support sustainable agriculture. We can educate ourselves to better understand how our actions and purchases impact the wildlife that lives locally and around the world.
