Happy World Tai Chi and Qigong Day 2024
As a practitioner, teacher, and researcher of both disciplines, World Tai Chi and Qigong Day holds a special significance for me. It’s a day dedicated to celebrating these ancient mind-body disciplines and the profound impact they have on our holistic well-being. I am so grateful for what Qi Gong taught me that I developed MMQG, a holistic discipline that brings together Meditation, Mindfulness,…

Exploring the 8 Types of Meditation: Which is Right for Your Practice?
Tumblr media
In the pursuit of inner peace and spiritual growth, the practice of meditation serves as a sacred gateway—a portal through which we can explore the depths of our being and connect with the essence of existence. Within the vast landscape of meditation, there exists a rich tapestry of techniques, each offering a unique pathway to mindfulness, self-awareness, and transformation. Join us as we embark on a journey of discovery, exploring the eight main types of meditation and helping you discern which resonates most deeply with your soul.
1. Mindfulness Meditation
Description: Mindfulness meditation, rooted in Buddhist tradition, invites practitioners to cultivate present-moment awareness by observing thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations without judgment. It involves anchoring attention to the breath or bodily sensations and gently redirecting the mind when it wanders.
Benefits: Mindfulness meditation fosters greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and stress reduction. It promotes clarity of mind, enhanced focus, and a deeper sense of connection to oneself and the world.
2. Spiritual Meditation
Description: Spiritual meditation involves seeking a deeper connection with the divine, the universe, or one's higher self. Practitioners may engage in prayer, visualization, or contemplation of sacred texts or symbols to nurture their spiritual connection and cultivate a sense of inner peace and guidance.
Benefits: Spiritual meditation deepens one's sense of purpose, meaning, and connection to the divine. It fosters spiritual growth, inner wisdom, and a profound sense of trust and surrender to the unfolding of life.
3. Focused Meditation
Description: Focused meditation involves directing attention to a single point of focus, such as the breath, a candle flame, or a mantra. The goal is to cultivate concentration and mental clarity by gently returning attention to the chosen focal point whenever distractions arise.
Benefits: Focused meditation enhances concentration, memory, and cognitive function. It promotes mindfulness, reduces mental clutter, and cultivates a sense of inner calm and stability.
4. Movement Meditation
Description: Movement meditation, also known as mindful movement or walking meditation, integrates mindful awareness with gentle physical movement. Practitioners may engage in slow, deliberate movements such as walking, yoga, tai chi, or qigong, focusing on the sensations and rhythm of the body in motion.
Benefits: Movement meditation cultivates embodied presence, flexibility, and balance. It promotes physical health, stress reduction, and a deeper connection between mind, body, and spirit.
5. Mantra Meditation
Description: Mantra meditation involves silently repeating a sacred word, phrase, or sound (mantra) to focus the mind and induce a state of deep relaxation and inner peace. The repetition of the mantra serves as a point of concentration, helping to quiet the chatter of the mind and access deeper states of consciousness.
Benefits: Mantra meditation calms the mind, reduces stress, and enhances mental clarity. It deepens self-awareness, fosters spiritual growth, and cultivates a sense of connection to the divine within.
6. Transcendental Meditation (TM)
Description: Transcendental Meditation is a mantra-based technique where practitioners silently repeat a specific word or phrase (mantra) to access transcendent states of consciousness and deep relaxation. TM typically involves two 20-minute sessions per day.
Benefits: TM reduces stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. It enhances creativity, cognitive function, and overall mental clarity. Regular practice is associated with improved cardiovascular health and longevity.
7. Progressive Relaxation
Description: Progressive relaxation involves systematically tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in the body to release physical tension and induce a state of deep relaxation. Practitioners may start with the feet and work their way up to the head, consciously relaxing each muscle group.
Benefits: Progressive relaxation promotes physical relaxation, stress reduction, and relief from muscle tension and pain. It enhances body-mind awareness and fosters a sense of relaxation and well-being.
8. Metta Meditation (Loving-Kindness Meditation)
Description: Metta meditation cultivates feelings of compassion, kindness, and goodwill towards oneself and others. Practitioners repeat affirmations or phrases such as "May I be happy, may I be healthy, may I be safe," extending these wishes to loved ones, acquaintances, and even difficult individuals.
Benefits: Metta meditation enhances empathy, reduces negative emotions, and strengthens interpersonal relationships. It fosters a sense of connection and kindness towards oneself and the world.
Choosing Your Path
As you embark on your meditation journey, remember that there is no "right" or "wrong" practice—only the practice that resonates most deeply with your heart and soul. Explore different techniques, trust your intuition, and allow yourself to be guided by the wisdom of your innermost being.
Whether you're drawn to the simplicity of mindfulness, the spiritual depth of transcendental meditation, or the heart-opening embrace of loving-kindness, know that each moment of presence and self-discovery is a sacred step along the path to awakening.
May your exploration of meditation be filled with curiosity, compassion, and joy as you journey towards the inner peace and wisdom that dwells within.

Modern-Day Odyssey Puts Recovering Beat Spirit on the Road to Uncover the Cause and Effect of Donald Trump
In ‘The Return Trip,’ author Michael Byrne imagines a rescue mission for a literary icon, a lonely stoned writer on the road
Tumblr media
June 10, 2023 - Invoking the spirit of Jack Kerouac and his half-lit forays across America, explaining the unexplainable, author Michael Byrne tells the story of a reporter on the road to uncover the brave new world of Donald Trump while dealing with his own increasingly worrisome problems. In The Return Trip, Byrne draws from his experience as a Chinese linguist and student of Taoist internal martial arts to connect the first seven months of the Trump administration to a new take on Kerouac’s Dharma Bums.
In imagining a writer in search of America today, Byrne has mounted a rescue mission of sorts, picking up the trail of the wandering Beat spirit that Kerouac dropped off somewhere near Big Sur before drinking himself to death, and creating a modern-day odyssey for a wandering road warrior. The writer’s mission is complicated by his addictions and hedonism, and mounting evidence that someone is trying to kill him. Under the influence of more than a few intoxicants, he leads readers on a wild six-month trip through the modern American West.
Byrne’s research for this novel included following programs to overcome addiction to drugs, particularly alcohol. “I’ve sought advice from doctors, psychologists and qigong health gurus, all of which benefited me immensely,” he said. The idea for The Return Trip emerged during his November 2016 trip across seven states to visit Tai-Chi and qigong masters he’d met online, and whose lessons, conversations, and motivations informed the development of the story and certain characters. He chronicled his journey in The New Dharma Bums, one of several blogs and social media platforms he inhabits. The blogs and additional information can be found on the author’s website, https://the-return-trip.com/.
About the Author
Byrne has been writing professionally since high school, recruited by his hometown newspaper in Henderson, Ky., to cover news and sports. After serving as a Chinese and Vietnamese linguist for the U.S. Air Force, and earning a MA in Journalism at Indiana University, he worked at newspapers in Hollywood, Fla., and Norfolk, Va., before moving to Washington, D.C., serving first as the managing editor of Air Force Times, and then as editor of the AFL-CIO News. He worked for two decades on campaign communications as an executive with PR firms in Washington, an advocate for unions and progressive political groups.
Now Byrne has tapped into his journalism roots to create a credible tale that hangs on global events and the drama of personal struggle against addiction. The Return Trip was conceived as both a rollicking adventure story and a self-help guide for making healthy choices, he said. “This is a story for our times.”

Finding Balance: How Mindfulness Practices Can Help Alleviate Stress and Prevent Burnout
Tumblr media
In today's hectic world, stress and burnout have become all too common, affecting individuals in various aspects of their lives. However, amidst the chaos, mindfulness practices offer a beacon of hope and healing. In this article, we will explore how incorporating mindfulness into our lives can alleviate stress, prevent burnout, and foster spiritual well-being.
Understanding Stress and Burnout
Before delving into solutions, it's crucial to understand the root causes of stress and burnout. Stress is a natural response to challenging situations, but when it becomes chronic and overwhelming, it can lead to burnout – a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion. Burnout often results from prolonged exposure to stressors such as work pressure, personal responsibilities, and societal expectations.
The Power of Mindfulness
Mindfulness, rooted in ancient contemplative traditions, involves paying attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity, and acceptance. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop greater awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, allowing us to respond to stressors more skillfully. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, and body scans, promote relaxation, emotional regulation, and resilience.
Spiritual Context of Mindfulness
Incorporating mindfulness into our lives can also deepen our spiritual connection and enhance our overall well-being. Spiritual traditions from around the world have long recognized the importance of present-moment awareness and inner stillness in nurturing the soul. By practicing mindfulness, we can tap into a deeper sense of inner peace, wisdom, and compassion – qualities that are essential for spiritual growth and resilience.
Practical Strategies for Overcoming Burnout
Mindful Meditation: Set aside time each day for meditation practice. Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and focus on your breath or a specific mantra. Allow thoughts to come and go without judgment, returning your attention to the present moment whenever you become distracted.
Mindful Movement: Engage in mindful movement practices such as yoga, tai chi, or qigong. These gentle exercises not only promote physical health but also cultivate mindfulness, body awareness, and relaxation.
Mindful Eating: Pay attention to the sensory experience of eating, savoring each bite and noticing the flavors, textures, and smells. Eating mindfully can help reduce stress, improve digestion, and foster a healthier relationship with food.
Mindful Communication: Practice mindful communication by listening attentively to others, speaking with clarity and compassion, and being fully present in conversations. Mindful communication fosters deeper connections, reduces misunderstandings, and enhances interpersonal relationships.
Mindful Rest: Prioritize rest and relaxation as essential components of self-care. Set boundaries around work and personal time, and allow yourself to rest without guilt or judgment. Engage in activities that replenish your energy and nourish your spirit, such as spending time in nature, reading, or practicing hobbies.
The upshot
Mindfulness practices offer powerful tools for alleviating stress, preventing burnout, and nurturing spiritual well-being. By cultivating mindfulness in our daily lives, we can develop greater awareness, resilience, and compassion, leading to a deeper sense of balance and fulfillment. As we embark on this journey of self-discovery and healing, may we find solace in the present moment and embrace the transformative power of mindfulness.

Unlock the Power of Qigong Therapy: Enhance Energy Balance, Joint Mobility, and Therapeutic Movements
Tumblr media
In our fast-paced, stress-filled lives, finding an effective and holistic approach to enhance energy balance, improve joint mobility, and promote therapeutic movements is crucial. Fortunately, Qigong therapy offers a time-tested solution that can help us achieve these goals. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the world of Qigong therapy, exploring its benefits, techniques, and how it can positively impact our overall well-being. 1. Understanding Qigong Therapy: Qigong therapy is an ancient Chinese practice that combines deep breathing, gentle movements, and focused intention to cultivate and balance the body's vital energy, also known as Qi. This holistic approach helps improve the flow of Qi, restoring health and harmony to the entire system. 2. The Benefits of Qigong Therapy: Qigong therapy offers numerous benefits for individuals seeking to enhance their well-being. Some of these benefits include: a) Enhanced Energy Balance: By promoting the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body, Qigong therapy helps restore and maintain energy balance. Balanced energy levels contribute to increased vitality, improved stamina, and a more harmonious state of being. b) Improved Joint Mobility: The gentle, flowing movements in Qigong therapy promote flexibility and joint mobility. Regular practice can help alleviate stiffness, reduce pain, and enhance overall physical performance. c) Therapeutic Movements: Qigong therapy includes specific movements and exercises that target various areas of the body. These therapeutic movements can address specific ailments or imbalances, providing relief for issues such as back pain, arthritis, and digestive disorders. 3. Qigong Therapy Techniques: a) Breathwork: Deep, mindful breathing is a foundational element of Qigong therapy. By consciously focusing on the breath and inhaling fresh Qi, practitioners can nourish their bodies and promote relaxation. b) Gentle Movements: Qigong therapy involves slow, gentle, and deliberate movements that flow seamlessly from one to another. These movements can range from simple stretches to more complex routines, all aimed at enhancing energy flow and promoting physical well-being. c) Meditation and Visualization: Another integral component of Qigong therapy is meditation and visualization. By focusing on specific energy centers within the body, individuals can direct Qi to those areas, promoting healing and overall balance. 4. Incorporating Qigong Therapy Into Your Life: To begin reaping the benefits of Qigong therapy, consider the following steps: a) Find a Qualified Instructor: To ensure proper guidance and instruction, it's recommended to seek out a qualified Qigong instructor. They can teach you the correct techniques, provide personalized guidance, and help you progress on your Qigong journey. b) Establish a Regular Practice: Consistency is key when it comes to Qigong therapy. Set aside dedicated time every day to practice and explore the various techniques and movements. Start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the duration as your comfort and skills grow. c) Integrate Qigong Into Your Routine: Incorporate Qigong into your daily routine by choosing opportune moments to practice. Consider starting your day with a short Qigong session to invigorate your body and mind or ending your day with calming movements to promote relaxation and prepare for restful sleep. d) Explore Further: As you become more proficient in Qigong therapy, you can delve deeper into its various forms and styles. Explore different Qigong exercises, such as Tai Chi or martial arts-inspired Qigong, to diversify your practice and expand your skill set. Conclusion: Qigong therapy offers a holistic approach to enhance energy balance, improve joint mobility, and promote therapeutic movements. I used to live in Hong Kong for many years and left for America the land of opportunity. But not good health. Hong Kong to my surprise has the best longevity in the World. This is despite heavy pollution, limited organic food, really cramped living conditions and low health care spending. Why do they live so long? Part of the answer may lie in the fact they eat a lot of fresh food. Unlike in the US where people shop once a week and either freeze or refrigerate their food, people in Hong Kong have really tiny kitchens. There is no space. So, they eat out. Virtually every day. There are plenty of inexpensive restaurants serving fresh food. Because of the massive scale, prices are cheap and food waste is  also reduced by cooking for many. And they eat plenty of fish. Glorious varieties of fish, often steamed. Vegetables too, made in the most amazing ways. For such a busy place there are plenty of outdoor spaces. You should see how many retired people get up early in the morning, gather in large groups and practice tai chi. It is truly a sight to behold. Afterwards they go to a restaurant with fellow retirees which may be building a sense of wellbeing. This is often done on a daily basis. The younger people are too busy to do this but they too meet in large groups at lunch time. Again, fresh food. In the evening they meet friends or work mates for dinner. It could be a simple place like a Dai Pa Dong (a no-frills restaurant) or a more expensive place for special occasions or somewhere in between. This social fabric and a huge variety of food may explain their longevity. I am so glad Hong Kong exposed me to the art of eating better and the social gathering. I have got to eat more fresh fish despite concerns about mercury. My fish skills are not great but I started with this expensive Halibut. It was out of this World. Next how to master Hong Kong style steamed fish. Got to live long and healthy.

A, J, N for Declan? 😊
Under the cut because it got long. xD
A: Aptitude1. what are your oc’s natural abilities, things they’ve been doing since young? Martial arts and cross country hiking. His primary art style is Chen style Tai Chi Chuan, but he’s had some time under teachers of other arts, namely some Bagua and a little Hung Gar/Hung Ga. He’s not a master in any of the arts, but he does enjoy practicing them and the weapon sets. Fire arms practice folded in very nicely with this once he decided to become a LEO. He enjoys being outdoors and just fucking exploring anywhere he can find a way to get to. Tries to be responsible and not hare off without a plan, but sometimes you just gotta go run wild in nature. (Side note: his martial art abilities are based off of stories from family and friends, not personal experiences) 2. what activities have they participated in? See above. He likes doing crafts/DIY stuff and some gardening too. Standing meditation too, with some Qigong bits here and there. Tends to be a busy guy.3. what abilities do they have that they’ve worked for? See number one. He’s good at what he does re: his martial art practice, but not like, superstar on the Beijing Wushu team levels at all. That’s a whole ‘nother level of devotion. He’s got years of daily practice in there, it’d be kind of shocking if he wasn’t good at it to some degree. xD He’s done some local martial art competitions when he was younger and won a few, but never went beyond state level competitions.4. what things are they bad at? Driving. In the sense that he drives like a grandma. Does not like motorcycles, ATVs, etc. Does not enjoy boats or planes either, particularly if he’s the pilot. Airplanes piloted by someone who knows what they’re doing he can tolerate.5. what is their most impressive talent?I mean, if he’s going to be showing off, it’s likely competition martial art sets, specifically unarmed sets, or if we’re talking weapons he likes the saber, straight sword, and spear sets best. If we’re talking domestic, he knows how to make potstickers and soup dumplings. This sounds deceptively simple until you get to trying to make the pleats look pretty.———————————————————J: Joy1. what makes them happy? Living his life, honestly. 2. who makes them happy? Family and friends. This is writer talk for “I haven’t fleshed out the other NPCs in his verse yet.” xDD He likes being around them though and just chilling, be it at a family gathering or whathaveyou.3. are there any songs that bring them joy? Yeah, he’s a fan of instrumental music and acoustic covers. Will listen generally to anything melodic though.4. are they happy often? Honestly yes…though in “current” time for him he’s dealing with “what the fuck is going on with my understanding of how the universe works,” but even still, he’s managing. Honestly is just generally a cheery guy. A real lil quiet ball of sunshine.5. what brings them the most joy in the world?See one. This boy just wants to live a good life and do good things and meet good people, man.———————————————————N: Never Have I Ever1. what would they never do? He has a pretty straight forward moral event horizon of things he won’t ever do, and that would be inhumane acts of cruelty, directed at either people, animals, the environment or otherwise. There are other things he won’t do of a lesser sort primarily having to do with upholding his civic duty, filial piety, etc. He’s the most upright moral of my Deputies honestly. x’D2. what have they never done that they want to do? He wanted to fall in love and have a nice home with someone who could come back home to him, and that he could come back home to as well. Still does, just, kind of busy with sanity-questioning supernatural issues. And the end of the world. xD3. is there anything they absolutely can’t believe people do? [gestures to number one yet again,] He understands that people do terrible things, but like…it never ceases to shock him internally what some people are willing to do. Especially if they know better. The Reaping certainly was a bad time for him and his optimistic belief in the inherent goodness of humanity based on actions taken by both sides, but Eden’s Gate in particular.4. what is the most embarrassing thing they’ve done? He was a naughty little gremlin at school once. This was back in elementary. There was a girl who made fun of his lunch and he told her that he had a cursed monkey’s paw and that snapping off the four remaining “fingers” would bestow different curses on her. It was a pickled chicken’s foot, not a monkey’s paw. (He read a variation of this story in a comic book a week before. He quite enjoys visiting the library.)Namely that her hair would fall out, her skin would take on a greenish-white tinge from growing fungus underneath it, her fingers and face would become all contorted, and that she’d get cramps in her legs that were so bad she’d have to hop to get anywhere. She didn’t entirely believe him, but guess what this little gremlin did? He went and got another boy and girl to help him out on this (the teasing girl was not well-liked in some circles.) They actually tried as much as some elementary schoolers could to fake her out, and managed to pull off the first two “curses” with taking advantage of some discreet use of thinning-scissors and a poorly dyed green shirt. This was not done in a way that any adult would believe, I would like to point out. xD The bully girl ran off screaming for fear of the later curses to the principle’s office, and then Declan had to explain to his parents what he’d gone and done.It was mortifying to have to explain all that to his mom and dad, honestly. He’d gotten really into it, he and his friends had been considering if tying the girl’s shoelaces together would work for one of the next curses. Maybe glue on her hands? There was a debate between liquid glue and glue sticks that remains un-concluded to this day. He had not really thought about the consequences of when it all came to light. He got more chores for a month for that. xDD The girl stopped teasing him and the others though since her mom told her to not talk to the lot of them ever again, so there’s that. He’s a morally upright sort but he’s not above pranks, even still.5. have they done anything they thought they’d never do?He didn’t think he’d ever kill so many people. Speaking of the Reaping and in-game events. Some of them were so young. Younger than him. Working as a LEO, he knew that death was very possible and likely to happen and he was as prepared for it as he felt he could be…just not like this. Not so many.
