Hi everyone!
In light of the Olympics and the "motorsport Olympic" jokes, I have decided to almost every country that has a racing driver a nominee for who will compete for them. Keep in mind, this is purely for fun, so try to sport your driver (or rider) in here! There's Formula One and it's support series, karters, endurance/gt, rally, and even Formula E, MotoGP, and even IndyCar. Plus, almost every driver/rider here has competed in the last 2-3 years (minus Iran she's just my idol and badass). Have fun!

coffee caffeine: steady, reliable, even refined. a complex profile. not overly aggressive, it displays a polite restraint rarely seen in stimulants
red bull caffeine: hypnotically european. sharp, crisp. a drink with a superiority complex. every word spoken to you is heard somehow in clean, grotesque fonts. you speak a bit of german now. sudden interest in formula 1 and rallycross.
monster caffeine: hypnotically american. you just bought a gopro. you’re talking too loud at parties. is that an affliction t shirt youre wearing? no… you wouldn’t… sudden interest in snowboarding and bmx
nos: this is not sustainable. you should quit now, while you’re ahead. the world is dark, but there is beauty left, in the rare corners and in guarded secrets. you must never forget that. hold your heart close, and remember there is life to live beyond the gleaming blue cannister.

the way this film could have been so interesting but instead we get brad pitt doing whatever he's doing
what i think i've realised is that brad pitt doesn't actually want to make an f1 film. he wants to make a nascar film.
all of that design the car for combat cars smashing into each other just straight up driving across the grass to crash someone out macho who said anything about safety brad pitt's character is a driver from the 90s when drivers were real men who actually risked their lives bullshit is stuff you could do in nascar (or rallycross to a certain extent but i doubt brad pitt knows what rallycross is) and if he accepted that i think it would be better for everyone.
everything that brad pitt wants to do can be done in nascar in a way that it can't in f1, but because nascar is not considered a particularly "highbrow" form of motorsport, and this film is also effectively wish fulfilment for brad pitt where he gets to stand next to actual world champions and pretend like he can compete with them and pretend like he travels the world for a living to race alongside a bunch of wealthy europeans, and get handed trophies by royals of varying degrees of problematic, he's making it an f1 film instead.
like it's literally make a wish for old abusive assholes. none of this film makes sense, but because brad pitt wants to pretend to be an f1 driver not a nascar driver, this has now become our problem

I picked my poison 😈
Rally racing I choose you!!!!!
so, let's start with some context.
rally is a type of racing defined by sharp turns, mixed road surfaces, and narrow, technical racecourses. it's split into two categories, stage rally and rallycross, with the big-name series for each being the World Rally Championship (WRC) and World Rallycross (WRX) respectively.
rallycross is the more conventional of the two, taking place on a circuit (racetrack that loops back to the starting line) built specifically to host races. there are a set number of laps, and the first driver to the finish wins. there are some other details, such as a one-way starting area outside the track where cars build up speed before entering the circuit, and whatever the fuck a Joker Lap is (i think it's a one-time shortcut per driver? idk WRX isn't my main interest)
stage rally is a bit more of a standout. in its modern form, it consists of frame-reinforced, six hundred horsepower, jacked-up hatchbacks absolutely screaming down back-country roads, paved or not, in any weather as long as drivers can see about a dozen meters ahead of themselves. here's an example of a modern WRC rally car from a few years back:
Tumblr media
races are centered around a specific area, and are divided into "stages" (hence the name). stages are point-to-point courses on closed-off public roads, often having the edges of the track marked only by flexible plastic fencing. cars run one at a time, with the shortest time from point A to point B being the winner. each car carries a crew of two: driver and navigator. the driver, as one would assume, operates the vehicle (throttle/brakes, steering, gear changes) while the navigator holds a map of the stage and calls out "pace notes," which include the direction/sharpness of upcoming turns, road hazards such as water or jumps, and advises caution where necessary.
a major difference between rally and other forms of racing is how drivers treat loss of traction. in conventional racing, if a car loses grip, something has gone very wrong, and the driver has to immediately attempt to regain traction in order to avoid being passed. in rally, loss of traction is simply a given, and serves as a tool the driver can use for particularly technical sections of a stage.
time for more context! when a wheeled vehicle loses traction, it can either occur as an all-wheel slide, or a partial loss of traction. for partial loss, it presents as either oversteer or understeer. understeer occurs when the front wheels lose traction in a turn, resulting in the car simply continuing in a straight line (not good).
oversteer is the fun part.
you see, maneuvering in a vehicle is a matter of directional stability, and two out of four wheels losing grip results in extremes of stability. where understeer makes a car very stable in terms of where the nose is pointed, oversteer induces instability, causing the car to spin. and when horizontal grip is limited (i.e. you're driving on dirt, sand, gravel, or snow), forward grip can actually be used to steer.
by breaking the rear wheels into a slide by means of hard steering, sudden throttle input, or a hydraulic emergency brake that exclusively locks the rear wheels in place, an experienced driver can induce instability, causing the rear of the car to swing in the opposite direction the driver is turning. basically, turn sharply to the right, and the rear wheels will slide to the car's left. since the 80s, basically all rally cars have been all-wheel drive, meaning the engine sends power to all four wheels. by spinning the car to face the direction you want to go, the front wheels can then be used to course-correct, letting the driver slide sideways through a corner without letting off of the throttle while the rear wheels push the car towards the inside of the corner.
due to the benefits of managing instability, rally tends to naturally favor cars with a shorter wheelbase (distance between front and rear wheels) which have more leverage to effectively spin the car around on demand.
the technical term for this kind of maneuver is "functional oversteer," but is known more commonly as powersliding or drifting. it's basically an alternative to ordinary cornering for loose terrain. or for being stylish, if you're on pavement.
since the cars can handle losing traction, races occur regardless of things like fog, rain, snow, or time of day. this differs from pure-pavement motorsports such as Formula One or NASCAR, which only race in slight rain (with NASCAR racing exclusively in dry weather).
lemme know if you wanna hear more!

In Sing Me a Lullaby I loved the world building that you built throughout the different time frames and the way omegas in society are progressing (Nico while in F1 and the other drivers and after Nico retired) in motor sports. I’m really interested in the other people in the universe it’s so rich. What’s the story behind Carlos Sainz Sr. being an omega in rallying. What is the whole adopted alpha son Jr.???? I’m so curious of how that works in the universe!!! In my head Lando has been the biggest fan (obsessed) of Carlos Sr. due to being a successful omega in sports and then later when Carlos Jr. starts getting into formula he’s a fan of his because of his dad see the old tweets. And they fall in love at McLaren and Lando goes and cheers his father-in-law at the Extreme E. Also what would the other drivers on the grids a/b/o dynamic be? Are the teams made up of mostly alphas and betas or is it mixed? How many omegas are on the grid? THANKS FOR WRITING THIS BEAUTIFUL BUT PAINFUL MASTERPIECE!!!!!
PS. If you don’t like Carlando feel free to ignore my ask! <3
Thank you for this lovely ask anon! I'm not a huge fan of Carlando, but I love this for you, and the idea of Lando and Carlos cheering on Senior is very sweet :)
Worldbuilding below the cut
The very unsexy answer to the story behind Carlos Senior being an omega is that I painted myself into a worldbuilding corner when I made Extreme E an omega-only league. And then I realized that Carlos Jr. was born during his racing career, which means Senior must not have been pregnant with him. Thus, adoption!
It meant a lot to me to have Nico be able to find that home for himself in Extreme E. There's a lot that the Extreme E journey represents for me-- learning to find solidarity with other omegas, reconciling the part of himself that wants to care for others with the part that is a competitor, etc.-- so I was willing to bite whatever worldbuilding bullets I needed to. But I also really liked how having Sainz adopt his son gave a model of another way to balance parenting and racing.
Anyway, in-universe, it ended up turning out that RallyCross is, for whatever reason, more accepting of omegas than Formula One. It's fun to think about in-universe cultural explanations for this: I definitely drew an implicit contrast between the extremely mechanized, technical world of F1 and a more natural, freewheeling world in RallyCross and Extreme E. I didn't want to go too far in that direction because of sex binarism and biological determinism, but I didn't mind playing a little with those archetypes.
In terms of the other drivers on the grid, I do a lot of this in offhand comments, but the most traditional dynamic for a team is an alpha first driver and a a beta second driver.
Nico is the first omega champion! Here's the other people who are listed in the fic:
Michael Schumacher (alpha) and Rubens Barichello (omega), shook that up, and there's been more omegas since.
Alpha-Alpha pairs are risky, but can pay off; it failed for McLaren with Alonso and Hamilton, but Red Bull has made them their signature, with Mark, Seb, Daniel, Max, etc.
Midfield teams often end up with more beta drivers, in no small part due to sexism, etc.
2010s:
Fernando Alonso (Alpha)
Mark Webber (Alpha)
Jenson Button (Beta)
Felipe Massa (Beta)
Kimi Räikkönen (dynamic not listed, but in my head he's a beta; Ferrari is the most traditional of the big teams, and I think they'd be more likely to run a double-beta team for a bit than take a chance on a double-alpha team)
Jules Bianchi (Omega)
Romain Grosjean (Omega)
2020s:
Daniel Ricciardo (Alpha)
Max Verstappen (Alpha)
Lando Norris (Omega)
Charles Leclerc (Omega)
Valtteri Bottas (Beta)
Carlos Sainz (Alpha)
I didn't put too much thought into anyone else-- I tend to worldbuild as I go, as evidenced by realizing I had made Carlos Sr. an omega, so people generally got assigned a dynamic when they showed up. If there's particular people you're curious about, feel free to ask, and I'll come up with something that makes sense!

will be posting more wrc gifs later!
tbh not rly feeling f1 these past weeks (mostly bc i am not a massive fan of the circuits lately), but i will always try to make gifs. might post some later but i’m busy this weekend
ALSO: if you are interested in other motorsports, check out WRC and rallying!!
i love rally so much. got into it this year, and i am so obssessed. if you follow me here, you know that i also make wrc gifs.
there is 30% off on the wrc+ live annual pass this weekend (i think there is a 14-day trial period as well). it comes with WRC, ERC, and WRX (world rally, european rally, and world rallycross championships), so you could also get a taste of those series!
at the moment, i have only thirst-trapped a few of my friends (and maybe some followers? idk HAHA) into liking rally bc of my kalle rovanperä gifs, so it would be cool if a few more ppl hopped onto the rally train

Mick Schumacher reaches emotional Race of Champions final as DTM star Mattias Ekstrom triumphs
Double DTM and FIA World Rallycross Champion Mattias Ekstrom won the Race of Champions for a record-equalling fourth time at Sweden’s Pite Havsbad over the weekend, defeating former Haas F1 racer Mick Schumacher in the Grand Final. Ekstrom out-scored Schumacher – now acting as reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team – by two heats to nil in Sunday’s showdown on the snow and ice of the frozen Baltic Sea, despite encountering a scare when he had to put out a cockpit fire. READ MORE: Lucas Blakeley beats rival Jarno Opmeer to be crowned eROC Champion 2023 It marked an emotional victory for Ekstrom, who previously won two of his three titles against Mick’s father, seven-time F1 champion Michael, and means he now equals the ROC record also held by French rally legends Didier Auriol and Sebastien Loeb. Earlier in the knockout stages (which separated racing drivers and those with rallying experience) Ekstrom came out on top against extreme sports legend Travis Pastrana, five-time World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristoffersson and World Rally star Thierry Neuville in a mixture of identical off-road cars. Schumacher, meanwhile, booked his place in the final after winning a head-to-head with the recently-retired Sebastian Vettel – F1 also represented at the star-studded event through Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard and Valtteri Bottas. Hakkinen and current Alfa Romeo driver Bottas both lost in the Round of 16 stage, while Hakkinen’s former McLaren team mate, Coulthard, dropped out in the Round 1 play-offs. READ MORE: Vettel hints he might try his hand at rallying as he considers his post-F1 plans Before the individual competition, father-and-son duo Petter and Oliver Solberg won Saturday’s ROC Nations Cup for Team Norway, getting the better of a Team All Stars line-up featuring Aston Martin F1 development driver Felipe Drugovich and the aforementioned Neuville. The Nations Cup featured a strong run from Team eRoc, represented by 2022 F1 Esports Series Champion Lucas Blakely and Jarno Opmeer, with the former running Vettel close again (see below) – after the pair scrapped at the 2022 event. “It’s very special to have four wins and even more special to do it in Sweden. I won my first final at the Stade de France in Paris against Sebastien Loeb, then I had two finals with Michael Schumacher in London and Beijing, so to see Mick in the final today was very emotional for me,” said Ekstrom after taking victory. “This is even more special than winning; Michael’s always been one of the guys I admire most in the sport, for his dedication, hard work and talent. I only got to know Michael at the Race Of Champions. We had many battles and I have only great memories with Michael from this event. READ MORE: ‘He deserves a chance’ – Wolff says Mercedes role can help Schumacher get back into an F1 race seat “Michael was always humble with me and I can see Mick is also very humble. Mick is such a huge talent and his time is ahead of him, so I look forward to more battles in the future. I know it won’t take long until I get beaten, but against Mick I would have no problem with finishing second.” via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

what do you mean johan wasn't in the driver pool? nico just decided he wanted him and called him until he gave in?
pretty much, yeah. when extreme e started, there was a driver pool of drivers who wanted to participate in the series. i'm 90% sure this is so the team owners/bosses would have female drivers to choose from because lbr most of them couldn't name a woman if they tried let alone a female driver.
but nico did his research and decided that for a off-road series with what was likely to be a lot of contact he wanted rallycross and off-road specialists. johan kristoffersson is a rallycross goat. he is to rallycross what schumacher is to f1. there have been 10 fia rallycross world championships so far and johan has won 6 of them. he has 41 wins. the next most successful rallycross driver is timmy hansen who has 13 wins. in 2018 he won 11/12 races. there isn't a single other rallycross driver in the world who can compare to him.
nico saw that and decided that johan was who he wanted as a driver. johan turned him down initially, but nico called again, they spoke for over an hour and johan agreed to drive for him.
rxr won the first extreme e race, the first extreme e championship, and the most recent extreme e championship. johan is now the only double extreme e championship, so i think the whole thing worked out well for everyone involved
