Oldies And Goodies
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Masterlist - Join My Taglist!
Written for my personal fic writing challenge for 2024, Sophie's Year of Fic! Featuring a new fic being posted every Friday, all year long :)
Fandom: Marvel
Summary: Bucky's not a fan of modern dating conventions, until Sam sets him up on a date with a good friend who shows him the potential of the modern world.
Word Count: 1,543
Category: Fluff
A/N: To the anon who sent me an idea outline for this, I hope you like it! It got merged with another idea I had, but hopefully, it's still pretty close to what you had in mind :) Thanks for continuing to read stuff for Grant Ward and enabling me to keep writing him- he's my fave, so I'm glad I have at least a few people to share the love with!

My eyes scanned the restaurant, trying to make out Bucky through the dim lighting. After a moment, I caught sight of him at a table by the window. I smiled and started heading his way. As soon as he noticed me, he shared my smile and stood to greet me. Always the perfect gentleman. My heart skipped a beat, and I made a mental note to make Sam some cookies or something as a thank you.
Sam Wilson, a good friend of mine even before he'd taken up the superhero mantle, had recently introduced me to the second supersoldier out of time that he'd befriended. Bucky Barnes, the reformed Winter Soldier, was a little different than the Man With A Plan Steve Rogers, but he'd been different in a way that I liked. We'd hit it off pretty well, and with a some meddling from Sam, we'd set up a date within a few weeks of first meeting each other.
I'd spent an hour and a half making sure my outfit looked just right and trying to convince my nerves to calm the hell down. It was just a first date, with someone I was already friendly with. And I knew Sam wouldn't steer me wrong. Tonight was going to be fun.
Once I got close enough to the table, Bucky pulled a small bouquet of roses out from behind his back, holding them out to me with a lopsided smile. I gasped, taking them from him with a slightly disbelieving look.
"I've been told the flowers are a little old fashioned, but... it seemed like the right way to go," he said. I gave a little laugh, taking a moment to smell the roses (literally) before beaming back at Bucky.
"I love them," I said. His shoulders seemed to relax a little, the smile spreading to cover the rest of his face as he took a few steps closer to me.
"I'm glad. Here, let me get your chair."
He pulled my chair back from the table, gesturing for me to sit down. I nodded my thanks, trying to ignore the butterflies exploding in my chest as he scooted the chair back in for me like it was nothing. I gently laid the roses down on the table as he took his seat across from me again.
"Thanks for finding this place," I said, scanning the restaurant to take in the ambiance this time, instead of just searching for Bucky. "It's... really nice."
"Yeah, no kidding," he said, huffing a small laugh. "Honestly, I'm... a little out of my depth here. A lot's changed since the last time I asked somebody on a date."
"Well, for what it's worth, you've been doing pretty damn well so far."
We shared a smile, but then a silence settled over us that wasn't entirely comfortable. As much as this night seemed perfect, I couldn't help agreeing with Bucky. This place wasn't totally my scene, and I was starting to feel a little out of my depth, too.
"So..." I said, taking a deep breath and meeting Bucky's eyes again. "What exactly did dates look like back in the 1940s? One of the handful of times I talked to Steve, he said you set up a pretty cool double date to... some kind of expo?"
Bucky's eyes fell to the table even as his mouth pulled up in a smile. He nodded, talking as much to himself as to me.
"Yeah. Despite how it ended, I was always pretty proud of the Stark Expo one. We got to see a car fly long before any of that should've been possible. Walking around, looking at all the exhibits and experiments... honestly, it was incredible." He looked back up at me, the soft smile still in place. "Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of major, groundbreaking expos happening tonight for us to swing by."
"Damn. That would've been fun," I said, gently reaching across the table to take Bucky's hand in my own. I bit my lip, then looked up at him with a smile. "You know, Steve also said you're kind of a nerd."
Bucky snorted. Clearly, that's not what he'd been expecting me to say. He shook his head, but when he looked back at me, he had a smile on his face.
"Steve's got quite a few stories of his own that he should keep in mind when he says things like that."
"Well..." I took a deep breath, hardening my own resolve. Bucky and I were friends, and for whatever reason, this restaurant didn't feel right for either of us. I needed to trust him and our relationship so far, rather than pretending for norms or anybody else's approval. "Look, I don't know about you, but... this restaurant is lovely, but not exactly my usual vibe."
Bucky sighed, shaking his head and pulling his hand out of mine.
"I know, it's not really mine either. I just-"
"Hold on. I have an idea for a solution that might suit us both. And I think it'll be super fun."
Bucky stared at me for a few moments appraisingly, the faintest ghost of a smile appearing on his face.
"You know, I'm not used to letting the other person plan the date. But I guess I can make an exception."
I grinned. "Good. Because I have an idea that didn't exist in the 40s, but is the kind of modern thing I think you'll be able to get behind. You trust me?"
"...Yeah, I do."
"Good." I took Bucky's hand, grabbed my roses, then stood from the table. "Then follow me."
****************
"...and in the original, Gollum volunteered the ring as a prize for Bilbo winning the riddle contest!"
I beamed at my date as he raised out of his chair, the few beers we'd had and his passion for Tolkien pushing him to make his point loudly after being called on for the bonus question of this round of trivia. The host grinned, ringing a bell and pointing at Bucky.
"Aaaaand that's correct! Mark that down as three points for Oldies and Goodies! Hang tight everybody while we update the scoring, and we'll be back with our final round in ten minutes."
With that, the bar dissolved into chatter again as everyone went their separate ways for the break in trivia. Bucky settled back down into his seat with a sigh, then carefully cut his eyes towards me.
"So... was that a dealbreaker for you?"
I laughed. "Are you kidding? You got us three points, all while schooling the rest of the bar on some nerdy shit! It was hot."
Bucky laughed at that, shaking his head even as a smile stayed in place on his face.
"Alright, I've done a lot of complaining to Sam about how much dating's changed since I last did it, but I'll admit... I like this."
I grinned. "I'm glad. And for the record, I like it too. As far as I'm concerned, being able to have fun and kick ass at bar trivia with someone is one of the best green flags there is."
"Well, good. Because that table over there is right behind us in the points, and after they shouted out the worst string of horseshit about the Hobit I've ever heard with complete confidence, there's no way I'm letting us lose to them."
"Hell yeah! I'll go grab us another round, and then we'll make them wish they'd never come to this trivia night."
I jumped down from my seat and started heading past Bucky to the bar, but he caught my arm before I could get very far, his expression more serious than I'd seen it all night.
"Hey. Thanks. For getting a round of beer, for agreeing to come out with me tonight, for bringing us here... it's the best time I've had in a while, and you've been pretty much the entire reason for that. So thank you."
I smiled, my heart speeding up in my chest as I took a half-step closer to Bucky and softly kissed him on the cheek before leaning back.
"You're welcome. Thanks for being willing to try out something as new and chaotic as bar trivia. Maybe we could even make it a weekly thing?"
Bucky beamed back at me. "Sweetheart, I would love that."
"Okay, good. Then start getting ready for the next round, because if we're coming back here next week, I want it to be in defense of our title. This is the beginning of the trivia power couple Oldies and Goodies."
"I like the sound of that," Bucky said, his voice dropping an octave as he leaned into me a little. I smiled, and he pulled me into his side, squeezing me tight before letting me go so I could get us both another round.
My dopey smile stayed on my face even as I got to the bar. I'd always had butterflies in my chest when I was around Bucky, but now, it was more than that. Being around him made me happy. I felt comfortable, and I didn't want the night to end. And luckily for me, he apparently felt the same way.
Destroying our enemies at trivia was just the beginning for us. And with no ending in sight, I truly couldn't wait to see what came next.

The Stolen Identity of Joseph Newton Chandler III
October 28, 2024
Robert Ivan Nichols, who went by the alias Joseph Newton Chandler III was born on September 12, 1926 in New Albany, Indiana.
On July 23, 2002, Robert Ivan Nichols committed suicide by a gunshot wound to the head in Eastlake, Ohio at the age of 75. After his death, investigators tried to locate his family and friends but to no avail. It was later found that Robert had been using the name Joseph Newton Chandler III for decades as a false identity, and that the real Joseph was an 8 year old boy who died in a car crash in 1945.
The real Joseph Newton Chandler III was born on March 11, 1937 in Buffalo, New York. On December 21, 1945, Joseph, his father Joseph Newton Chandler Jr., and his mother, Billie, were killed instantly in a car accident close by to Sherman, Texas.
The Chandler family had been on their way to see the boy's grandmother in Weatherford, Texas for the holidays. Their car had been in a head on collision with a truck driven by a man named L.C. Black of De Queen, Arkansas who left the scene uninjured.
Robert Nicholas joined the US Navy in World War II and served as a firefighter on the USS Aaron Ward which ended up being bombed by the Japanese in May 1945 off Okinawa. Robert was wounded in the back and hip and awarded the Purple Heart. He burned his uniforms after the war.
Robert married a woman named Laverne Kort in 1947. They had three sons and Robert worked as a draftsman for an electric company. In 1964, he left his wife and family and filed for divorce.
He moved to Dearborn, Michigan, where he told his parents he worked in the automobile industry. By March 1965, he wrote to his parents that he was now living in Richmond, California, while also sending a letter to his son Phil from Napa, California.
After this, Robert's family never heard from him again and later reported in missing in the same year. The family hired detectives to try to find Robert in both California and Indiana, but were unable to find any trace of him or anyone who knew him in those areas.
It is noted that Robert used his real name to work until around 1976.
Robert stole Joseph's identity in September 1978 in Rapid City, South Dakota, after applying for a social security card. He then moved to Cleveland, and worked a number of jobs. Robert had eventually become laid off in 1997.
It was also said that he claimed to have a sister named Mary Wilson, who lived in Columbus, Ohio, however the address he provided for her was made up and did not exist there. It was revealed later that Robert had used that address that he was born at in New Albany.
It was reported that Robert living under Joseph's identity, was a hermit who only left his house to work and eat. His co-workers reported that he rarely spoke to anyone and had no friends.
He also engaged in strange behaviour such as listening to white noise for hours, and one time drove 700 miles to an L.L. Bean store in Maine, only to leave when he got there because there was no spots available to park.
In 1992, he dressed up as a gangster and went to a Halloween party however the people there claimed he never spoke to anyone the entire night.
In 1989, Robert showed up to a local hospital with lacerations on his penis, claiming he got them from a vacuum. He also made homemade electronic devices a lot. He had a computer he used sometimes, and investigators found searches such as "Nazism" and "plastic explosives."
Robert's body was discovered in his apartment on July 30, 2002, about a week after he died. He shot himself in the mouth with a revolver he had purchased months before. On his calendar he had marked down the days until his suicide, and before doing it had closed his blinds and turned off his air conditioning. He had recently been diagnosed with colon cancer which may have been part or his reasoning for his death.
He had $82,000 in his bank account and had listed co-workers as his emergency contacts. Police could not find any of his relatives and that is what led them to realize he was living under a false name and identity. Authorities could not use fingerprints to assist in identification but were able to get a DNA sample from a hospital Robert had visited in 2000.
So why had Robert been living under the false identity of Joseph Newton Chandler III who had died almost 60 years prior and what was his real name?
Authorities speculated that Robert was a fugitive of some kind, either on the run after committing violent crimes or hiding from something. No theories have ever been confirmed.
Internet sleuths suggest he may have been the unidentified Zodiac killer as he resembled police sketches and was known to live in California. Some believed he was a fugitive named Steven Campbell, who was wanted for attempted murder. Authorities also thought he may have been a German soldier or Nazi official from World War II who had fled to the US to escape prosecution for war crimes.
Robert's name was not identified until 2018, 16 years after he died. In 2014, the case was reopened, and using DNA extracted from a tissue sample from his hospital visit, a CODIS profile was created, but no hits were found.
In 2016, there was a match found that indicated his possible surname was either Nicholas or Nichols. In 2018, the DNA Doe Project identified him as Robert Ivan Nichols. A CODIS match with Phil Nichols, Robert's son, confirmed his identification.
The reason for why Robert Nicholas stole the identity of an 8 year old boy who died in 1945, and lived under the identity since 1978 remains a mystery.

That mysterious font is Festive, not Stymie
By Ray Newman - April 22, 2024
Source: https://precastreinforced.co.uk/2024/04/22/that-mysterious-font-is-festive-not-stymie/
What is that font? You know, THAT font? The chunky italic lettering you see on launderettes and council blocks, on post-war churches and new town butcher’s shops, across the UK.
The font you’re thinking of might well be ‘Festive’, a lettering style designed by Maurice Ward of Ward & Co, a sign-making company in Bristol, founded in 1952.
Launched in the early 1960s, Ward’s ‘Inter-signs’ product, manufactured under the Lettercast brand, used injection moulding.
Lettersigns was available in two styles, Festive and Block, and made it possible for anyone to mount their own custom signs with professional-looking 3D lettering.
Or, of course, the specific sign you’re thinking of might be in one of any number of similar lettering styles in the broader category of ‘Egyptian italic’.
Samples of lettering styles similar to Festive cobbled together by me from various sources including The Studio Book of Alphabets, 1963.
Those include:
Egyptian Italic (an earlier Ward & Co style)
Festival Egyptian (an official style of the Festival of Britain)
Stymie Bold Italic
Clarendon Bold Italic
Profil
Amigo No. 1
First, then, let’s pin down how to spot Festive in particular.
How to spot Festive
Trade catalogues from Wards of Bristol include samples of Festive in print.
From this, we can see the most distinctive features of Festive, which can help us distinguish it from similar lettering styles in the wild.
A sample of Festive from a Ward’s catalogue from, I think, 1971.
A shop sign in Bristol in Festive, author’s own photo.
First, there’s the unexpected serif at the apex of the capital A.
Then there’s the relative flatness of the round letters, like C and G.
And, of course, there’s the built-in beading – that outer line that traces the edge of each letter.
The origins of Festive
There’s a clue right there in the name: like almost every bit of flair in Britain’s mid-20th century public spaces, it came indirectly from the 1951 Festival of Britain.
One of its official lettering styles was ‘Festival Egyptian’, as depicted in the typographic handbook for designers.
A page from A Specimen of Display Letters Designed for the Festival of Britain 1951 via Chris Mullen at The Visual Telling of Stories.
But why Egyptian? In around 1817, London type founder Vincent Figgins created a typeface he referred to as ‘Antique’.
An 1834 sample of an italic variation of Antique. SOURCE: archive.org
It was fat, bold and easy to read from a distance.
Earlier examples of this style have been found but Figgins commercialised it and prompted imitations from other foundries worldwide.
These days, they’re known as slab serif fonts but in the 19th century, they were usually referred to as antique, after Figgins; or as either Ionic or Egyptian, in variations on the theme.
You can certainly see in Antique, especially when italicised, the seeds of the 20th century launderette signs and tower block titling.
But these in-your-face, ungainly display typefaces went out of fashion, like everything associated with the Victorians. They spoke of slums, music halls and Gothic mausoleums. They weren’t fit for the world of motor cars, aeroplanes and Streamline Moderne.
Then, in the 1930s, a revival began, achieving its full flowering with the 1951 Festival of Britain. This is documented in detail by Paul Rennie in this 2001 essay (PDF) but here are the key points.
First, the cover of John Betjeman’s first book Ghastly Good Taste, published in 1933 when he was still in his twenties, showcased a jumble of Victorian typefaces.
Then, in 1938, came Nicolette Gray’s book Nineteenth Century Ornamented Typefaces, celebrating Victorian lettering styles.
And in the same year, the architect and townscape designer Gordon Cullen personally produced (non-italic) slab serif lettering for the starkly modern Finsbury Health Centre. It is clearly ahead of its time and wouldn’t look out of place on a municipal building erected 20 years later.

Though the British Government generally clung to clean, uncluttered sans serif typefaces such as Gill Sans for official posters (Keep Calm and Carry On, chaps) advertising designers and publishers dabbled in Victorian styles throughout the 1940s.
After World War II, In the run up to the Festival, committees and working groups were put together to consider every small detail, including typography. Gordon Cullen and Nicolette Gray were both on the Festival of Britain Typographic Panel.
Once the Festival was over, Festival style lingered. Lettering catalogues from the 1950s and 60s include, for example, Egyptian Italic, Rockwell Italic and Ultra Bodoni Italic.
A sample of Egyptian Italic from a Ward’s catalogue of 1971.
Maurice Ward wrote this of his Egyptian Italic, the immediate precursor to Festive, in a catalogue from 1962:
[This] face, together with its vertical counterpart is a harmonious combination of the best features of the Egyptian family of characters and is perfectly suited as an architectural letter on buildings. The popularity of these Egyptians is unquestionably due to the Festival of Britain in 1951 and no face characterises more aptly the word ‘Festive’.
And when Ward & Co (Lettercast) launched Festive in around 1963 it was labelled as “based on Egyptian Italic”, which was in turn a take on Festival Egyptian.
The A from Egyptian Italic (left) and from Festive (right).
Feelings about fonts
What’s fascinating about Festive is how it moves people emotionally, and obsesses them.
The writer Jason Hazeley has been trying to identify it for years, for example, referring to it as “That Font” or “Everywhere Bold Italic”.
And he is not alone. For a generation of British people, it represents the vanishing landscape of their childhoods, tied into ideas of nostalgia and even hauntology.
Graphic designers have often resorted to Profil as a close match – and, of course, Festive was never really intended to be used in print.
On social media, including a popular Flickr group, Stymie Bold Italic has incorrectly been used to describe this entire category of lettering styles.
It’s only recently, however, that illustrator and designer Richard Littler of Scarfolk fame managed to unlock the mystery – or, at least, bring together all the threads.
When he put out a call on social media his significant reach across multiple platforms, with exactly the right kind of people, brought to light:
previously overlooked material at archive.org
detailed research into the British soap opera Crossroads (Wayback Machine)
The latter, a spectacular piece of work, has been sitting there for anyone to find since 2020, in a different domain of geekiness – if only type nerds had known to search ‘Inter-signs’ and ‘Lettercast’.
Personally, I’m a bit embarrassed not to have got there sooner. Back in 2020 I spent some time researching this seriously. I got in touch with Andy Ward, Maurice Ward’s son, who tipped me off to Egyptian Italic, and sent me photocopies of material he had at hand, at home, during lockdown.
And then Christine Daniel sent me photos of the back of some sign letters in her collection with ‘Inter-signs’ clearly marked on the back. But I couldn’t quite make those final links.
Together, though, we got there. The mystery has been solved. What a relief.
With thanks to Christine Daniel, Jason Hazeley, Richard Littler, Paul Rhodes and Andy Ward.

Cycling through the ‘hidden heartlands’ of this wondrous island…

Cycling through the ‘hidden heartlands’ of this wondrous island…
July is the month I take a break from political commentary and go cycling around Ireland. Two years ago – with my friend David Ward – I cycled from Mizen Head in west Cork to Fair Head in north Antrim. In contrast, this year we decided to cycle from north-west to south-east: from Derry city to Rosslare in Wexford. That involved putting the bicycles on the train to Belfast and Derry and back from Rosslare. I have often wondered why we have met so few other cycle tourists in our midsummer perambulations around the island (just one other couple this year). One of the reasons must be the extraordinary lack of provision for bicycles on Irish Rail trains. There was a time when at least on the trains between the three main cities – Dublin, Belfast and Cork – there were guards vans, and therefore plenty of room for bikes. Now every train has precisely two clumsy racks for bikes in one single passenger car. I had booked those racks for our trip back in April, the full allowable three months in advance. I wonder how many disappointed foreign cycle tourists have discovered there was no possibility of bringing their bikes on Irish trains this summer. I have tried in vain to book myself and my two cycling daughters onto trains. It’s a crazy, self-defeating system at a time when sustainable tourism is all the rage. So David and I set off from Derry on 1st July. The first two significant places we passed were a contrast in national and sectarian styles. Newbuildings is a loyalist village: Orange flags and First World War memorials abound, with every small settlement seeming to sport a cricket ground. Strabane is a strongly nationalist town (although it too has a cricket club), with Sinn Fein’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill canvassing in the main street, surrounded by a group of adoring women, and republican hunger strike memorials in the Catholic housing estates. The cricketing theme continued in the tree-lined, former industrial village of Sion Mills, just south of Strabane. Here, in July 1969 – in the last piece of good news before Northern Ireland descended into 30 years of violence – Ireland caused one the biggest upsets in late 20th century cricket by defeating a powerful West Indian side, bowling them out on a soggy pitch for an astonishing 25 runs. We spent the first night in Omagh, watching Orange bands march through the streets as part of the Battle of the Somme commemorations. If you take away the anti-Catholicism, there is great colour and pageantry in these band parades, not to mention musical virtuosity. In a united Ireland we are going to have to find some way of making them acceptable, even enjoyable, to the great majority of people in the present-day republic who are implacably hostile to the Orange Order. The following morning we cycled through Fintona, a classically divided Northern Irish village, with a big, modern gospel hall at one end of the main street, and a splendid GAA complex at the other. In the middle is a pub, The Poet’s Bar: one can only hope that members of the two communities occasionally come together here under the benign eye of John Montague, one of Ireland’s finest late 20th century poets, who was raised in nearby Garvaghey. In Lisnaskea in Fermanagh, we had a tasty lunch in the charming Cherry Tree bakery, one of those remarkable home bakeries for which Northern Ireland deserves to be better known. Isabel Charles and her husband Norman converted a badly rundown building into this bakery and cafe, opening it in June 1970, just as nearly 30 years of darkness descended on the North. These are the kind of unheralded, extremely hardworking people who kept open the lines of civility and prosperity during the worst of times. Then it was across the border into Cavan. Cavan town gives the impression of being an unusually industrious and thriving place. Whether it’s big multinationals like Liberty Insurance, St Gobain or Abbott, or smaller local enterprises in everything from data analytics to cider making, digitisation in construction to homemade chocolates, this unfashionable town is a place of enterprise and entrepreneurship. And it shows in the lines of plutocratic five and six bedroomed houses on many of the roads out of the town. The next stop was Loughcrew in north Meath. This extraordinary passage tomb on a hill is estimated to be 5,200 years old, 2,000 years older than nearby Newgrange and older again than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. As sun and showers swept across the countryside, leaving a brilliant lucidity in the sky, I was able to see the whole central plain of Ireland and the mountains that ring it: the Cooleys, the Mournes, Slieve Gullion, the Slieve Blooms, Cuilcagh on the Fermanagh-Cavan border and the mountains of Sligo and Leitrim. Here for more than five millenia people have been celebrating their ancestors, their gods and nature. It is a truly humbling experience to stand on its small summit and think about the countless ancestors who have stood here before me and contemplated this celestial view. We crossed Westmeath in bright sunshine. One of my glimpses of heaven on earth (I have others) is to be cycling through the hayfields and meadows of Ireland’s rich agricultural counties under blue skies and scudding clouds with the smell of silage in my nostrils. Then it was along the banks of the Royal Canal, past young canoeists learning the ropes at Longwood and the engineering marvel that is the Boyne Aqueduct, built in 1795 to bring the canal over the Boyne river. From canal to canal: west of Naas is a very picturesque and little-known wooded stretch of the Grand Canal, complete with cafes and coffee kiosks, which lands one conveniently in that town’s main thoroughfare through the short Basin Street. We spent that night in the hospitable company of my astronomer and adventurer friend John Butler, late of Armagh Observatory, who spends much of his time now in his converted farmhouse outside Hollywood, with superb views of the Wicklow Mountains. We skirted those mountains through Baltinglass, Tullow and Bunclody to make Enniscorthy our final overnight stop, breaking for lunch in the Green Lemon café in the pretty village of Rathvilly (home place of Kevin Barry, the 18 year old Irish Volunteer and medical student executed by the British in the War of Independence). I have written before of my wonder at the excellent cafés in so many small places these days, one of the most pleasurable aspects of the arrival of prosperity in Ireland. Two more on this journey were the Limetree coffee shop at Loughcrew and the Sugar and Spice café in Bunclody. As a longtime café lover, I cannot recommend these pleasing establishments highly enough. We ended our six-day journey at Rosslare Strand in County Wexford with a moment of happiness as I posed with my bicycle on the beach for a photo taken by a group of friendly women from Carlow. This was a journey through part of what Tourism Ireland has dubbed the ‘Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands’ (with a bit of ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ thrown in): effectively the Shannon basin and the midlands, because due to the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s idiotic reluctance to get involved in Tourism Ireland’s highly regarded international campaigns, it has to stop at the border. The ‘Hidden Heartlands’ campaign has never really taken off, unlike Tourism Ireland’s spectacularly successful ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ along the west coast. As I was cycling our 450 kilometre route through the heart of the island, I was mulling over what one might be able to sell to overseas tourists in the 10 counties we passed through. There are plenty of fine attractions in these relatively unfashionable and unvisited regions, some of which we experienced on this trip. Here is an indicative list: Derry’s walls; Tyrone’s Orange band parades (they do good republican parades too, if that is more your bag); the lakes of Fermanagh; the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ steps up Cuilcagh mountain on the Cavan border; the passage grave at Loughcrew; the 18th century folly that is Belvedere House in Westmeath; the Curragh of Kildare; the Wicklow Mountains; the Borris Festival of Writing and Ideas (with some of the world’s leading novelists, historians and journalists) in Carlow and the marvellous beaches of Wexford. Ireland is a uniquely beautiful and fascinating island, and the often overlooked Irish midlands are part of that fascination. PS (1) One can’t get away from politics completely, even in midsummer. I was struck by the shameless populism of Sinn Fein who – six weeks after their poor performance in the European and local elections (partly attributable to their previously generous stance on housing asylum seekers) – produced a policy paper which basically advocated moving the accommodation of asylum seekers from working class to middle class areas. I live in the middle-class area of Rathmines/Ranelagh in south Dublin, where we have four buildings owned by property developers and a hotel housing several hundred asylum seekers. And there has been no trouble. Praise is due, in particular, for the small group of brilliant people in the area – most of them women – who have single-handedly supported the homeless asylum seekers for whom there is no accommodation, and whom the authorities cruelly keep moving along and erecting high fences to keep them and their tents out of small green areas. One can only imagine the exhaustion, fear and hopelessness of these young men from poor and war-torn countries. PS (2) Congratulations to Armagh on beating Galway to win the All-Ireland football championship. I lived for 14 years in Armagh city when running the Centre for Cross Border Studies, and have a very soft spot for the place. I’m particularly glad for manager Kieran McGeeney, whose determination and refusal to say die during the bad times over the past 10 years are worthy of real admiration.

Tasting Notes
Plan? Of course I had no plan. I wanted to integrate a lot of new records into the set, to set things up differently, and not rely on the “crutch” records I usually play. I had the afternoon to myself, and I spread things out and considered my options. I have been acquiring a lot of 12” records in the past few months, obscure and legendary. Mostly second hand. Mostly cheap. Those records are plentiful right now. So I loaded the crate with some of them. I like to hear stretched out versions, but not always. Sometimes I just like the sound of them, which is their utility. Of course, the trouble with vintage records is that if they are any good, they are worn out, often to the point of being unlistenable. I’ve been disappointed many times, but there is always something else to play.
I ended up changing out about 60% of my LP crate, but only about a quarter of my 7” singles. I did limit myself to one container of each. Which is a good way to induce focus.
I pack up the car and head down. I have a level of apprehension about this gig. The regular crew I had grown used to was all gone, and there were new people there, and I didn’t know them. I used to use the bar staff to play off, and now things were going to be different. Of course, I had played there the month before, but I shared the night with the Dryden Brothers, Retronaut and IGA. And that was cool. I arrived late and left early. But that time I didn’t take the elevator, and since I was so out of my routine it didn’t feel real.
I made it a point to get there early, so I could feel what the vibe was. The elevator was unresponsive, but that issue worked its way out quickly. I get to the booth and there are light controllers everywhere and a new monitor arrangement. I get myself prepared.
I start right at 9. I have several opening songs set up, but I go with the Shannon track just because it states the theme, “let the music play.” And that is what I do. One song to another. Seeing what feels right. I play some of my usual records in a different place, which makes me feel different, and leads to different outcomes. I realize that most of the people in the bar have no idea what thought goes into the presentation. I don’t say this to be self-aggrandizing. I am there, doing a job, that I can do well sometimes. And it does make me happy to see people react, even though they largely are unaware that a human being is providing the soundtrack for the space.
Garrett is responsible for the light controllers in the booth. They set up the installations around the bar, and they look amazing. In his spare time he checks IDs at the door. And juggles.
Speaking of the bar, it seems to have regained some of its mojo after the blows it has sustained this year so far. There are some larger than expected crowds rolling in throughout the night. My son shows up. There are a bunch of people he knows from Borah High in the house, and a few of them have come up to make themselves known before Sam even shows up. He’s on the town. Stays for a while, comes up and discusses the records I’m selecting. He heads out, goes over to the Electric Banana.
There is a volume complaint. I’m not insulted at all. It’s hard to gauge how loud the various corners around the bar can be. Records are all cut differently.
Beth, the new bar manager, comes up for a drink order, and I introduce myself. Later she tells me that she loved the set. That reassures me. One of my goals is to help the staff get through an evening, and play my role in the process. This is a business, not a clubhouse, and I am totally okay with it. You can be friendly with your audience, but they are not your friends. Mystery and distance are your friends. Leave them wanting more.
I’m glad to be there doing this thing that I have done for a good portion of my life. I don’t need friends there, even though I’m friendly with people. I’m there at a job, and I will continue to do it as long as they want me.
So, the plan? I did okay with it. I shifted things around, played the Roots Manuva 12” that Brion managed to track down for me. Also got Dillinger’s “Cokane in My Brain” worked in. Lots of 7” records. Did not play Sleaford Mods at all – maybe I’ll play them twice next time.
Next Third Space Saturday is June 15th, 2024. 2100 hrs is go time.
Thanks for reading.

Farewell to My Friend | Bril
Date: Early June 2024 Featuring: @agentgrumpy-gils Warnings: None, just sad :')
Bruce says one final goodbye.
BRUCE
The poetry of it all wasn’t lost on Bruce. The last time he’d been on an airplane, he’d been on his way to freedom, to his new life. And now here he was again, saying goodbye to that life, watching it get smaller and smaller out the window. But this time, he wasn’t so eager to leave the place he’d been. It was bittersweet, actually— he was losing something at the same time as he gained something else.
But he’d made his decision. He was just grateful that he’d had the time he had in Swynlake. That he’d met such wonderful friends. And that Gil would come all this way with him, halfway around the world just to make sure he got into the ocean safely.
After many hours, some of which Bruce tried to spend sleeping but barely managed in all his conflicting emotions, Samoa appeared in the distance, a sandy spot on the blue water. And then it grew bigger and bigger, and then it was more than a spot, it was a bright, bustling, vibrant island full of land people.
Bruce’s stomach twisted as he remembered the last time he was here. But they wouldn’t be here long.
“Not too much further then, eh?” he said as the plane touched down.
GIL:
This was supposed to be a happy moment.
And Gil was happy. They’d done the impossible — they’d found Bruce’s pod. They were going to reunite him with his family. Living in the ocean would have its risks. But at least he would be with his family.
Gil’s heart twinged as he saw the blue waters through the plane window.
That was two merfolk reunions in a few months. HQ was overjoyed. Gil was not used to the praise. It was shared across the whole team, of course, but it did feel a little… weird, especially considering this wasn’t even what Gil wanted to do in the first place —
(How could he even think that? How could he even think that when he saw how much it meant for Gabriella, and for Bruce?).
“A local operative is meeting us with a car,” said Gil. “And they’ll take us to a secluded beach.” He smiled at Bruce, standing up and grabbing his bag. “Almost there.”
BRUCE
Bruce nodded and returned his gaze out the window as the plane rolled along the tarmac. Tall, green palms swayed overhead and the sky was impossibly vast and blue. These would be his last memories of land. Though he was excited to be back in the ocean, he didn’t want to forget a single moment.
He stood up after Gil and followed him out of the plane onto the tarmac where a car was waiting, just as Gil had said it would be. “Thanks for coming with me,” Bruce said as they approached the car. “It was quite a long flight. And I know you’ve got other things going on back in Swynlake.”
Things that Bruce couldn’t even fathom, that were likely much more serious. But Gil had given his time to come with Bruce, just so he’d have a familiar face with him on the long, difficult journey. That meant a lot.
GIL:
It hadn’t even quite registered to Gil that he wouldn’t come. Bruce was an official RAS ward, unlike Gabriella. Also, landing in Samoa was objectively less dangerous than landing in Avalor.
And also, maybe most importantly, Bruce was his friend.
(Not that Gabriella hadn’t been; he’d known her well enough through the group. But Bruce was different).
“Of course,” said Gil to Bruce, before the car pulled up. He greeted the other agent, making quick introductions, and loaded up the car. Before Gil got into the car, he looked at Bruce, clasping a hand on his friend’s shoulder.
“This is important. For you. For us.”
BRUCE
Bruce still didn’t know the whole story of how Gil had ended up on land. At this point, he didn’t think he ever would. But he knew enough. He knew that most merpeople had a tragic reason for finding themselves separated from their homes (though there were exceptions, of course). He knew very well there was a reason they didn’t talk about that.
Finding his way home, it was about more than himself or Gil individually. It was a symbol of hope for both of them, that when merpeople worked together to help one another they could achieve powerful things.
“I know,” he said, his eyes heavy with the gravity of it. “I’m still grateful.”
They made small talk with the other agent, which felt a little bizarre to Bruce, but oddly natural, too. He wondered if the agent did this every day, delivering people to their destinies. What a life, he thought.
“Not too much further,” the agent said, and Bruce looked out the window again. The clusters of houses and businesses had loosened until they were in a much more rural area. Bruce smiled at Gil nervously.
“It’s nice out here,” Bruce commented. ”It’s been a long time since I’ve seen water so blue. In person, anyway.”
GIL:
“It’s beautiful.”
Gil couldn’t stop looking at the ocean.
It was so blue, but where the sunlight hit, it turned gold. It was a blue unique to this particular stretch of ocean, yet Gil couldn’t help but picture the deep turquoise waters he’d once called home.
Bruce was going home. This fact hit him again, a dull ache that reverberated in his heart. Bruce was going home.
And Gil never would.
The car pulled off the road and drove a little further through some jungle. Gil could still see the coastline. When the car finally stopped, the agent turned to Bruce and Gil.
“There’s a path that leads down to the beach,” they said. “If you need help finding it, just radio me. But I thought I’d give you two some time alone.”
Gil nodded. He stepped out of the car and extended a hand to Bruce.
“Are you ready?” he asked Bruce.
BRUCE:
Was he ready? Bruce wasn’t sure. But he was as ready as he would ever be. He’d made his decision, and it was time to focus on the future, not dwell on the past.
Okay, maybe he could dwell on it for just a moment longer. Because soon, Gil would be part of the past. And Bruce had a special and rare opportunity, an opportunity he hadn’t realized would be quite so special and rare until it was ripped away from him the first time. He had the opportunity to savor this last moment, to take a mental picture. And then he would have the opportunity to say goodbye.
“Yes,” Bruce said, taking Gil’s hand and stepping out of the car after thanking the driver.
He was keenly aware of the solid ground beneath his feet, the sweetness of the air. The brilliant blue of the sky above the brilliant blue of the sea. The dirt path turned to sand. And soon, they were on the beach.
And soon, it was all very real.
“Gil,” he said, looking in his friend’s eyes. “I want to say a few things before I go. Do you- do you have a moment?”
GIL:
He smelled the ocean before he saw it. The sharp salty scent filled his nostrils and Gil closed his eyes a moment. He could taste it, practically, in the back of his throat. The air was warm and thick with moisture, but still, the scent of the sea cut right through it.
It made his eyes water.
Then he heard it, the waves against the shore, the familiar rhythmic pounding.
And then, there it was, brilliant and blue.
Gil couldn’t help but smile.
Bruce’s voice tugged him from his reverie, and Gil turned back to him.
“Of course.” He nodded. “I have a moment. I have many moments. I have as many as you need right now.”
The beach was empty. Quiet. They were alone, just them and the vast expanse of ocean.
BRUCE
The waves rolled in and receded, leaving shadows of wet sand behind each time. The gentle swoosh of water, in and out, was almost loud on the peaceful beach. Birdsong rang from somewhere in the deep green forest. And in the middle of all of it, Bruce and Gil, just two fine little dots in the massive web that was this ecosystem. Bruce wasn’t home yet, but for a moment, he felt like he already was.
He continued in Mermish, because Bruce didn’t want a single thing getting lost in translation.
“I keep thinking about Bianca,” Bruce admitted. It wasn’t something he brought up to Gil often because he knew it was painful. But if he never got to speak to Gil again, he wanted to make sure he said it. “I did not trust her at first, to be completely honest. I chose to stay on land because I was afraid to go back to the ocean, but part of me wondered if I was just entering a new kind of captivity. She got me clothes to wear and a place to stay, and I appreciated that, but it took me a long time to trust her.
“But she was always very patient with me. She knew I needed time. And then she introduced me to you, and…” Bruce swallowed, starting to choke up now. “That was when I realized she really did care about me, that she understood what I needed. What you agents do, breaking into horrible places and saving people and getting them the things they need— it’s all very helpful, and very important. But there’s another piece to it, and without that piece, I don’t think I would have gotten to where I am now. You made me feel like a person again, someone worthy of kindness and care, someone with dignity. It was even in the little things— going to my birthday party, sending me those game tickets when we played phone games together— things like that. I don’t know if it seemed like a big thing to you, but it was a big thing to me. So… I wanted to thank you for that. And ask that you do the same for whoever the next person you save is. I think… I think Bianca would be very proud.”
GIL:
Bianca would be very proud.
Something in Gil’s throat caught. He kept his gaze on Bruce’s, but Gil felt like he was looking right through him, far beyond just the two of them on the quiet beach right now.
Bianca had requested he come to Swynlake, and Gil had resented it. He’d been so close to a breakthrough. It was four years in New York City down the drain. He was wasted in Swynlake. So he’d felt three years ago.
Maybe if you’d asked him just yesterday, he’d also say he felt wasted in Swynlake, one hand tied to a desk, to a team of agents he never asked to manage. And yet — and yet —
Bruce’s words made him hesitate.
Maybe his answer would not come so easily.
(Maybe, just maybe, it would be different).
“You don’t need to thank me,” said Gil. He’d returned to himself, more or less, gaze fixing back on Bruce. “But I appreciate it.”
He thought about saying that he wished someone had done the same for him, but — well, his foster family had, hadn’t they? They weren’t merfolk, so it wasn’t quite the same. But his foster father showed him how to tie his shoes and his foster mother learned what kind of tea he liked and always made him a cup before bed. They still emailed him, every holiday and every birthday.
Maybe that’s why, despite his resistance at being stuck in Swynlake, he’d held a hand out for Bruce. He knew what it was like; he’d once needed that hand himself.
“I’d do it all over again,” said Gil. “And I will. To the next person.”
And, well, there would be a next person. If there was a certainty in life, it was that there would always be a merperson in need.
Gil reached over and hugged Bruce, pulling him close and wrapping his arms around his friend. He was quiet now, not sure what to say. He was also worried that he might be crying.
“I am happy that you get to do this,” he said, softly. “My family is gone.” He’d never told Bruce the whole story, nor would he now. It wasn’t a hopeful one. And Bruce deserved hope. “But yours swims free —” His voice cracked. “And you get to return to them. It’s amazing.”
BRUCE
That was why Bruce wanted to thank him. He knew it was Gil’s job, and he would do it anyway. But it was more than that, wasn’t it? And at the final thing Gil said, Bruce knew it was true.
Bruce had learned this from his time on land: sometimes, terrible things happened for no reason at all. There was no forgiving it. There was no reconciling it. Your life may move on, but you would always wish that thing had not happened. But there was no reversing it, either. There was only the future.
You could let it turn you cold and mean, of course. No one could blame you for that. Not when it was so terrible. Or you could resolve to do better than those who had hurt you, to be the kindness you once feared did not exist in this world. Bruce didn’t know what exactly Gil had been through, but as a fellow merman, Bruce had an understanding. Especially after what he’d said now. Gil, Bruce knew, had chosen the second option. And in his time on land, so had Bruce.
He hugged Gil tightly. Bruce was certainly crying now.
“It is amazing,” Bruce agreed. “I’ll never forget you, Gil. I’ll tell everyone your story.”
And he would, eventually. And over the years, it would be passed down. Gil, the kind shallow-water merman. And theories would arise about how he had lost his family, but Bruce, as he grew older, would always emphasize that it wasn’t the important part of the tale. It was what happened after.
He glanced toward the water. “I should go soon. Tide’s going out…” Bruce said. “Are you- you’ll be alright finding the car again?”
GIL:
“I’ll be alright,” said Gil. The car wasn’t far. He knew the way back.
He pressed his lips together in a small smile.
The waves continued to beat against the shore, rhythmic and soothing. Gil wished he could walk to the water, feel it lap at his ankles, wade in till it consumed him whole.
But that wouldn’t be a happy ending for him. Not the way it would be for Bruce.
For years, when he thought about returning to the sea, all he sought was oblivion. But now, he looked at the waves and he felt hope.
It was strange. It wasn’t hope for himself. Or maybe it was.
He looked back at Bruce.
“I’ll stay till you swim off,” he said. “Maybe a bit longer. In case you need to…” He cleared his throat. “In case you forget anything.” He patted Bruce’s upper arm. “Take care, my friend.”
BRUCE
Bruce looked at Gil. His ghost of a smile, his eyes that were like weather. Once, Bruce had been a little afraid of him— afraid that he’d find out the things Bruce had done and cast him out. Now, he understood that fear had mostly been Bruce’s own reaction to hope. Meeting Gil, meeting another merman who’d lost his home, it was the first time since coming to land that Bruce thought someone might really understand him.
Of course, there were others now, Bruce knew, who understood him. One did not have to be a merman to understand feeling lonely or monstrous or separated from their home. But it still was different with Gil. And over time, their RAS-mandated check-ins had gone from a mandatory, nervous coffee meeting to the vulnerable, heart-to-heart conversations of dear friends. Slowly, Bruce had lost his fear of losing Gil.
But here he was, now. Losing Gil.
Like he’d told Gil, though, he would never forget him.
“You too, Gil,” Bruce replied. “Thank you. For everything.”
He gave Gil a nod, emptied his pockets of everything that he’d needed on land but had no use for under the sea. The borrowed phone. The forged ID. The punch card for Hatter’s, still two teacups short of a free drink. Everything that made him Bruce White.
And then he turned around and walked toward the shore. He glanced once more over his shoulder, not because he had regrets, but because he wanted to take one last mental picture of the man waiting on the shore for him, there if he forgot anything. The merman knew the implication of his words. If he changed his mind.
He wouldn’t change his mind. But it was comforting to know he would always have someone out there, ready for him, if he needed.
The water reached his knees, then his waist. The merman dove under the waves, and the cool water around him felt like an embrace.

OKAY so. trying to summarize:
i woke up when the rumours started and ngl i had a minor heart attack lol. EXTREMELY REAL because i can’t believe i was thinking of pierre or alex and- anyways. fred vasseur has the spirits of a hundred Gauls in him
free from sainz and i can’t believe the amount of people i’m seeing that are sad for him/believe ferrari fucked him over/are mad?? even from a neutral standpoint, anybody would have chosen lewis over him (sorry not sorry) (and if people think they should have dropped charles instead of him i think the psych ward is the only remaining option). secondly: how much worse is british media compared to spanish media? because they scare me and if they start spinning narratives around and throwing charles under the bus things are going to get ugly here in pizzaland (i’ve already seen many italians who are less than thrilled, let’s put it that way).
i’ve also read somewhere that phone calls and negotiations started earlier last year with Elkann so maybe fred has put more thought into the management of the line-up than we believe but i share your sentiment overall, this sure is rushed as hell. in the end what matters is that charles is the lead in the development of the project and the car, even if they’re granted equal treatment on track, which yes would be MENTAL but also as you say extremely exciting. they’ve shared brilliant battles on track already and he possibility to do so in equal machinery is amazing. they might stress us out but i too have a lot of faith in charles as a driver and i’m sure he’ll do great (he is crazy man, he knew and said yes, i can’t believe how insane that guy is).
also lewis jumping ship gives me a lot more hope on the future of the project, i was very skeptical of a possibile world championship for 2024 but maybe it’s happening? up until yesterday i was 100% sure max-redbull would be an unbeatable combination this year as well but if this can happen, anything can; and as you said i really hope too that charles gets his WDC before lewis does. as a seb fan: if lewis manages to get his eight with ferrari i will rip my hair out (sorry, still hurts, and its just so weird to think of the big bad silver guy in red). as a max fan: if lewis gets his eight i’ll have conflicting emotions but if it has to happen, i hope it will be with ferrari. the only thing i’m loathing rn is the idea of people crediting him with bringing glory back to the team after all that charles has had to endure and all the hard work he’s put in the team.
twitter is already hell rn so maybe i’ll take a page out of charles’ book and write my thoughts in a diary because that place is unbelievable. trying to be as respectful as possible, some of lewis’ fans drive me mad (dumb on my part to engage in conversation) and i truly wish they’d show a little more respect for ferrari as an institution, but i have to admit a lot of so called lecfosis take it too far as well. i cannot believe the amount of racism towards italians i’ve already seen going around — though as much as it displeases me to say it, it’s mutual, and it’s no use pretending italians don’t have a problem with skin colour still.
i think i’ll decide to ignore the fans and focus on the fact that lewis in ferrari red is amazing and his respect for the team is definitely solid and hope very hard seb will come back to witness this :’)
lastly; SILLY SEASON???!?!?!? this is massive and the shakeup on the grid will be even bigger but i have, like, absolutely no idea how accurate any kind of prediction would be. my rational self is hoping for alex in mercedes; my chaotic side wants to see fernando at redbull (don’t know if that’s happening, honesty; btw did you see checo’s post? it was SO FUNNY)
anyways, 2025 cannot come quick enough and on the positive this has restored my faith in this year soooooo!! i’m so excited!!!! and stressed!!!!!!!
i need to hear all your thoughts on the situation because i’m currently shitting myself
hey hello!! did you sleep through the chaos 👀 never in my wildest dreams did i imagine this would happen, we were talking about alex and yuki and ollie and now we have lewis hamilton 😭 we found out it was an option and within a day it became official!! i’ve never gone through so many emotions in my LIFE
Before Skysports put out their confirmation I did a small doom post here (and then they announced it and my brother sent me the screenshot of the Skysports post and i had the most fevered five hours of my life). I think my thoughts remain mainly the same 12h after the official announcements? I think we’re all concerned about how this is going to affect team dynamics. My thoughts on this are:
-We’re free from the Sainz clan and the Spanish media 😭😭 Worst fucking experience of my life.
-I’m not too worried about incidents on track because Lewis and Charles are both really clean racers. I know we all have some lingering shadow from the Sebchal era, but I think (and I may be wrong) that Lewis has only had Spain 2016 against him in this regard. I think the racing will be exciting and I’m looking forward to it.
My primary concern is that apparently Lewis reached out to Elkann 3 weeks ago. Now this is giving me stress ulcers because:
-It sounds like Ferrari did not put too much thought into how they’re going to manage two no.1 drivers. It sounds like Elkann jumped at the opportunity to sign Lewis Hamilton.
-Looking at that multi-year contract, I am 99% sure Lewis has been promised equal treatment. A 2+1 contract is not some pre-retirement fun. And kudos to them both for believing they can beat each other but I will be very!! stressed!!
-How does this factor into Fred’s restructuring because I doubt he was planning to sign a driver of Lewis’ calibre. Ultimately though it’s good for Ferrari as a team- if the car is good we’re going to witness some real racing and maybe even end RB’s domination before the new regs (haha.)
But as a 1644 enjoyer I think 2025-2028 (if neither of them utilise their exit clauses) will be a fun ride and I hope one way or another the title is coming back to Maranello. (In my delusion I think Charles can take 2024, 2025 and Lewis can have 2026) Honestly? I hope Charles bags the wdc this year so twitter is a bit less of a hellhole going into 2025. There are so many unknowns right now, the press conference in Bahrain will be so juicy and I can’t wait.
I think we just have to look at the positives and have faith in Charles as a driver. I’m just going to enjoy this season first and hope Seb’s returning in 2025 🥹 lmklmklmk what u think too!!
#sorry for the longest rant ever#this is mostly for myself too i needed to recollect my thoughts#bottom line is: forza charles forza ferrari#charles leclerc#lewis ferrari saga#lewis hamilton#scuderia ferrari#formula 1

Unfortunately, it's a bit weak. The actors themselves are fine, and it could be a nice goofy type of show, but the writing isn't there. You have the Sheriff and Stan, who are completely accepting that the fact witches and other evil stuff exist, but just brush it off (well, Stan at least) like it's no big deal. It shows off Lee's New York roots better than virtually all his other cameos, though, and so feels like some authentic find among all the artifice. 14. Thor The Dark World (2013) Sometimes Stan. It's no secret that Marvel constantly spins off Superman, whether it be with Ikarus or Hyperion. Sentry, however, has a chance against the original. Fans of DC and Marvel always enjoy a good fight between powerful characters like Superman and Sentry. In 2000, Marvel created an insanely powerful superhero with the letter S on his costume.

OFF THE MARKET –The Barbados National Terminal Company Limited (BNTCL) is off the selling block. Not only has Government taken the petroleum company’s proposed $100 million sale off the table, but it has also returned a deposit of US$10 million to regional oil giant Simpson Oil Limited (SOL). “The agreement with SOL has been terminated,” Minister of Energy Wilfred Abrahams confirmed to THE NATION in an exclusive interview. “The time for conclusion of the agreement had expired, and SOL requested their deposit back. The deposit has been returned to SOL, and that’s the end of that,” the minister said. But Abrahams was unable to say what would be the next move regarding the company. (SS)
SMITH SEEKING JOB EXTENSION – The ailing Roslyn Smith is seeking to hold on to her post as general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) until year-end. Though warded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since last December, Smith made the request through a letter dated March 15, written by acting general secretary Delcia Burke. However, in response to Smith’s request for an extension to her contract, president Akanni McDowall said a decision on the matter should be deferred to the union’s incoming executive committee and national council which should take office in the next two weeks. In the letter to the union’s president and copied to its council members, Smith requested through Burke that a special council meeting be convened on Sunday at 1 p.m., for her to address the national council on the issue, and if that can’t happen, that the council considers her request. SOLUTIONS FOR TRANSFORMATION IN FOCUS FOR CDB’S 49TH ANNUAL MEETING – Solutions and strategies to drive economic and social transformation in the Caribbean will feature prominently when the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) holds the 49th Annual Meeting of its Board of Governors in Trinidad and Tobago on June 5 and 6, 2019. The Meeting programme will include key events and research highlighting transformation in the traditional and emerging sectors and examining the role which technology and digitalisation can play in advancing the Region’s development agenda. This will be the fifth time that CDB’s Annual Meeting will be held in Trinidad and Tobago, which is one of the founding members of the Bank. Previous meetings were held there in 1977, 1989, 2004 and 2011. CDB President, Dr Wm. Warren Smith, explained why transformation is a priority for the Region as a whole as well as for the Bank as it approaches its 50th anniversary year. “Our borrowing member countries are operating in an increasingly complex global environment. The challenges are new, different and becoming increasingly complex relative to what obtained when the Bank was founded in 1970. As a Region and as an institution we need to, not just keep up but actually use innovation as a vehicle to leap ahead in this changing world. That is what we are anticipating in Trinidad and Tobago – a rich exchange of ideas, approaches and innovation that places the Region’s development at the forefront. We extend our thanks to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago for hosting this important meeting,” said Dr Smith. Around 400 delegates, including Government Ministers and officials, development partners, private sector representatives, members of civil society, academia, and media are expected to attend the Meeting. The event will showcase the scope and impact of the Bank’s investments in its 19 borrowing member countries (BMCs). Participants will also engage in strategic discussions aimed at ensuring that every BMC can benefit fully from the transformation process and that CDB remains agile and relevant in a transformed Caribbean. A major highlight of the Bank’s Annual Meeting is the William G. Demas Memorial Lecture, held in memory of the eminent Trinidadian economic scholar and Caribbean leader who served as the second President of CDB from 1974 to 1988. Now in its 20th year, the lecture features a distinguished speaker presenting on a trending economic and social development topic of importance to the Caribbean. Another significant event is VYBZING, where the Bank engages directly with young people on regional development issues and which is held ahead of the Meeting. For the first time, the event will have youth representatives from all 19 of CDB’s BMCs. During the course of the Meeting, there will be various interactive seminars, at which thought leaders and expert panellists will share new research findings and data on key topics. This year’s line-up will focus on agriculture, digitalisation for development and vulnerability and resilience. The Bank will also convene its annual Governors’ Roundtable. This year the Roundtable will provide the platform for discussion of the strategic direction of CDB as part of the process for formulating the new Strategic Plan 2020-2024. (SS)
FALL OF DEATH – A subcontractor’s first day on the job at Portvale Sugar Factory ended tragically on Saturday afternoon when he fell 70 feet to his death. Paul Clifford, who worked with Tarico Building Inc., was hired by Innotech Services Ltd, to fix the roof on the main building at the Blowers, St James factory. The job Clifford and his team was contracted to do, was expected to be completed over the weekend. Clifford, a British national, appeared to have stepped on one of the panels on the roof and fell through. Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss said police were treating it as a freak accident. “A number of workers were in here when the incident happened, so right now, we are questioning a number of people trying to get a sense of what happened today [yesterday],” Inniss said. General manager at the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) Leslie Parris described the circumstances as tragic, sad and one that left the staff in shock. (SS)
MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER NEW ZEALAND MOSQUE SHOOTINGS – The main suspect in mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques was charged with one count of murder a day after an attack that killed 49 people and wounded dozens, prompting the prime minister to vow reform of the country’s gun laws. Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian citizen, appeared in a Christchurch District Court on Saturday and was remanded without a plea until his next scheduled appearance in the South Island city’s High Court on April 5. Handcuffed and wearing a white prison suit, Tarrant did not speak. His court-appointed lawyer made no application for bail or name suppression. He was likely to face further charges, police said. The attack, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern labeled as terrorism, was the worst ever peacetime mass killing in New Zealand and the country raised its security threat level to the highest. Tarrant has been identified as a suspected white supremacist, based on his social media activity. Footage of the attack on one of the mosques was broadcast live on Facebook, and a “manifesto” denouncing immigrants as “invaders” was also posted online via links to related social media accounts. The video footage showed a man driving to the mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside. Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay on the floor, the video showed. Reuters was unable to confirm the footage’s authenticity and police urged people not to view or share it. Police said the alleged shooter was arrested in a car, which was carrying improvised explosive devices, 36 minutes after they were first called. It was still unclear whether any other shooters were involved in the attacks. Two other people were in custody and police said they were working to understand their involvement. Armed police were deployed at several locations in all cities, unusual in a country that has had low levels of gun violence. Ardern said the main suspect was a licensed gun owner who used five weapons during his rampage, including two semi-automatic weapons and two shotguns. Authorities were working to find out how he had obtained the weapons and a license, and how he was able to enter the country to carry out the attack, she said. “I can tell you one thing right now, our gun laws will change,” Ardern told reporters, saying a ban on semi-automatic weapons would be considered. None of those arrested had a criminal history or was on any watchlist in New Zealand or Australia. (SS)
A DECLARATION OF FOLLY – Barbados Cricket Association president Conde Riley has condemned a move by Leeward Islands Hurricanes to concede defeat with a bizarre second innings declaration in their final round West Indies Championship regional four-day match. A miscalculation of points denied the Hurricanes a second-place finish in the tournament after a failed attempt to prevent Barbados Pride from attaining further points in the match that ended prematurely in the afternoon session at the Vivian Richards Stadium on Friday. Cricket West Indies cricket operations manager Roland Holder told THE NATION on Saturday they had requested reports from all the parties and he was not prepared to make any further comment until those submissions were received. When contacted, however, Riley said he could not understand the thinking behind the Hurricanes’ decision. (SS)
CLEAN-UP AT ALL SAINTS – Several workers from Master’s Touch Environmental Services were busy at All Saints Primary School in St Peter yesterday undertaking an extensive cleaning and sanitising of the school. Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw announced on Thursday that the school would be closed to facilitate the cleaning following rat infestation. “We were made aware of the issues at the school [All Saints] on Monday. I suspect, due to the harvesting of the sugar cane, what has happened is the rats have taken over the institution and have done some breeding within the roofs of some parts of the premises. The Ministry of Health would have intervened and would have baited,” she said on Thursday. The cleaning is being done with the assistance of the ministries of Health and the Environment. When a NATION team visited the school yesterday, workers dressed in gloves, dust masks and white cleaning suits were busy sanitising desks, chairs, closets, windows and doors and discarding old material. Teachers were also on hand assisting where necessary. All Saints joined the list of primary schools that have been closed in recent times, including Milton Lynch, St James, Blackman and Gollop and Cuthbert Moore due to environmental issues. (SS)
DRAMATIC BEGINNINGS – Storybooks, comics, and popular children’s movies came to life at the Maria Holder Nursery School as they celebrated Character Day under the theme Developing Literacy Through Creative Teaching Techniques on the school’s Oldbury, St Philip compound on Friday. Students delighted their peers, teachers and parents as they showcased their costumes which ranged from Princess Elsa to Bob The Builder. Two of the most unique costumes were of a jockey which was worn by Jadarri Francis and an owl which was worn by Mahkia Carter. Principal of the school Sharon Knight said the event was organised to encourage children to read. “Reading is important. No matter where we go, we have to be readers. We just wanted the opportunity to develop a love for reading [in the students] from an early age. When children can dramatise a story and get into the story, it motivates them to read more. That is why we have the story Character Day,” she said. Knight told the media that Character Day was planned by the school since the beginning of the school term. “We have a school library which encourages them to read, and we also got the parents involved in reading at an early age. Some people do not believe that children at this young age can develop a love for reading but this is the foundation and we have to make sure we have a good foundation. [So] that when they get older they can recognise the importance of reading,” she said. The principal of the Oldbury learning institution told the media that the activities carried out for Literacy Week would be reinforced in the classrooms throughout the remainder of the term as they strive to help the students develop. “We want our children to be the best, and to be the best, they must read,” she said. (BT)
NEW-LOOK CROP OVER COMING – Many changes are coming to Crop Over 2019. Chief executive officer at the National Cultural Foundation, Carol Roberts-Reifer, made the official announcement yesterday at Ilaro Court during a sponsors’ reception. Among them is the new Soca Monarch competition, which will be held at the National Botanical Gardens, Waterford, St Michael. This replaces the Soca Royale. There will no longer be a semi-final component for the Pic-O-De-Crop competition, but rather the 16 calypsonians and a reserve will meet MrBlood in the finals. In addition, a revamped version of the Cavalcade concept called Bajarama will be held at different locations. (SS)

Poland’s doctors march to demand more health care funding
Hundreds of doctors marched Saturday through Poland’s capital of Warsaw to demand more spending on health care to cut waiting times for medical procedures and to stem the flow of underpaid doctors seeking jobs abroad.
Polish media say some people have died as they waited to be admitted to the hospital, and some children’s and obstetrician wards are slated to be closed due to a shortage of doctors and nurses.
This latest demands by Poland’s doctors come after the right-wing ruling party promised new benefits for families with children and for retirees ahead of the European Parliament election. Doctors and nurses have been demanding better pay and more funds for year for Polish health car, which is generally strapped but can also boast world-level expertise in areas like face transplants or caring for sextuplets.
The protesters, some clad in white doctors’ smocks, carried banners that read “We want to treat patients in Poland” and “Stop deaths in waiting lines” as they marched from the Health Ministry to parliament. They left a petition there demanding that 6.8% of Poland’s gross national product be spent on health care.
The conservative government aims to spend 6% by 2024, in a plan that came after massive health care protests in 2017.
Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski said some 98 billion zlotys ($25 billion) will be spent in the sector this year, compared to 75 billion zlotys ($19 billion) in 2015. A large part of the increase is aimed at better working conditions that will keep doctors from leaving, because personnel shortages are the main reason for long waiting times, Szumowski told the state news agency PAP.
The protesters say more efforts are needed sooner.
“Patients are really dying waiting for treatment. We will continue our protests against this,” said Dr. Krzysztof Bukiel, head of a doctors’ union.

MOSCOW | The Latest: Putin pledges to respect internet freedoms
MOSCOW — The Latest on President Vladimir Putin’s annual call-in television show (all times local):
2:50 p.m.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to respect the freedom of the internet.
Putin’s statement on Thursday came nearly two months after Russian authorities began blocking Telegram, a Russia-developed messaging app, over its refusal to share encryption data with intelligence agencies.
Asked during his call-in show whether Russia was considering blocking other popular apps or websites, Putin said authorities “are not going to shut down anything.”
Putin explained Telegram’s blocking, saying that intelligence agencies approached him to complain they could not trace the messages of the suspected perpetrators of a subway bombing because they were encrypted.
Putin admitted that the intelligence community always leans toward banning or blocking things but added that he will encourage them to find “a civilized solution” without “restricting freedoms.”
___
2:35 p.m.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling for building a new system of European security, saying that the United States is trying to undermine strategic parity.
Putin on Thursday accused the United States of “trying to upset strategic parity” and said that this should prompt other countries to get together and work out a new system of European security.
Responding to a question about a possible third World War, Putin said during his annual call-in show that the idea of a nuclear war should ward off such a conflict.
___
2:15 p.m.
Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russia’s 12 World Cup stadiums must be financially self-sustaining, following calls from some officials for government subsidies.
Putin said Thursday during an annual phone-in that “all the facilities need to be able to cover their costs.” He suggested the stadiums could add cafes and shopping malls to boost their profitability.
Putin said: “We spent a lot of money and I agree it needs to work for the benefit of sport.”
Regional officials have estimated annual maintenance costs of the various World Cup stadiums at 200 million to 400 million rubles ($3.2 million to $6.4 million) each.
The Russian government says total World Cup costs are around $11 billion, not including some infrastructure spending.
___
2:00 p.m.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has characterized new U.S. steel tariffs against its long-term allies as unjustified sanctions.
U.S. President Donald Trump enraged Canada and other American allies last week by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and threatening to do the same with imported cars and trucks.
Speaking Thursday about the move, Putin described the tariffs as “sanctions,” saying that countries which have imposed restrictions on Russia for the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula are now going to see what they feel like on their own skin.
“Did they annex Crimea?” Putin asked during his annual phone-in show, referring to Canada and Mexico.
___
1:40 p.m.
Russian President Vladimir Putin does not think that an ex-Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent, because they survived the attack.
British authorities blamed Russia for the March poisoning in the English city of Salisbury of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with a Soviet-designed nerve agent dubbed Novichok. The Skripals were in critical condition for weeks before recovering.
Asked about the poisoning during his annual call-in show on Thursday, Putin said he does not want to comment on the cause of their illness and said Russia is still seeking consular access to both of them and to their case files.
___
12:45 p.m.
Russian President Vladimir Putin says the government will be looking to streamline the tax system in order to fight poverty.
Putin said on his annual call-in show on Thursday that one of the goals of his presidency is to halve the number of Russians living below the poverty line, which currently stands at over 20 million people. The government will need 8 trillion rubles ($129 billion) on measures to lift people out of poverty, Putin said.
Responding to speculation that authorities might be looking to scrap the flat income tax, Putin said his government has decided that this is “not expedient” at this point. Putin said the funds will have to come from streamlining the tax system but stopped short of saying whether that means actual tax hikes.
___
12:20 p.m.
President Vladimir Putin says he’s confident of Russia’s long-term economic growth.
Speaking at the opening of his annual call-in television show, Putin said on Thursday that Russia’s gross domestic product is currently 1.5 percent higher than a year ago. He described it as modest but said he is confident that future “growth is guaranteed.”
Putin hosts call-in shows every year, which typically provide a platform for ordinary Russians to appeal to the president on issues ranging from foreign policy to housing and utilities.
This is Putin’s first live televised show since he was re-elected in March for a term of office that runs until 2024.
