my final verdict now that i am nearing the end of this clusterfuck is that if you are setting up your own website to sell or paywall content you should not bother sending a newsletter unless you're really fucking determined

i am now paying for

SMTP2GO to actually process emails and not have them get sent straight to spam (note that the free version of this works fine for basic account stuff for your users) [this is $10 a month or $100 a year]

MailPoet refused to actually send emails for me but i still have to pay for the creator plan that doesn't include processing emails, because that's the only way to ensure that only paying members get emails (sending emails to nonpaying members would make it even more expensive) [this is $11 a month or $114 a year]

a PO box, because you're required to have an address in the footer of your emails and i'm not giving out my home address [this is $19 every three months or $58 a year]

none of which i would have to do if i just kept saying "if you want emails use an rss to email service like feedrabbit, here's a link, good fucking luck"

IRON CROWN as a free comic is now off of wordpress and can be viewed by a neat, robust HTML/CSS/JS comic template called rarebit! effectively nothing has changed for the reader, beyond expecting a little more reliability of uptime over the years.

all comic pages and previously paywalled patreon posts can also be downloaded in this art dump for free, as mentioned in the new author's notes.

the long story:

When talking shop about site/platform moves under this handle, I think it's useful to realize that us (taboo) kink artists live in an actively adversarial internet now, compared to five years ago.

meaning that we have to live with an expectation that 99% of platforms (including registrars and hosting, let alone sns sites) will ban/kick us without warning. this might explain the overly cautious/defensive way we discuss technologies - weighing how likely (and easily) the tool can be used against us vs the perks.

for example: has a harassment mob bullied the platform owners into quietly dropping lolisho artists? trans artists? does the platform/technology have a clear, no-bullshit policy on drawn kink art (specifically third rail kinks like noncon)? does the platform have a long history of hosting r18 doujin artists/hentai publishers with no issue? does the company operate in a nation unfriendly to specific kinks (eg fashkink artists fundamentally incompatible with companies based in germany, when other kinks might be OK?). i talk with a few different groups of artists daily about the above.

but that gets tiring after a while! frankly, the only path that's becoming optimal long-term is (a) putting kink art on your personal site, and if possible, (b) self hosting the whole thing entirely, while (c) complementing your site with physical merch since it's much harder to destroy in one go.

with that said - I've been slowly re-designing all of my pages/sub-domains as compact 'bug out bags'. lean, efficiently packed with the essentials, and very easy to save and re-upload to a new host/registrar near instantly (and eventually, be friendly to self-hosting bandwidth costs since that's now a distant goal).

how does this look in theory, you ask?

zero dependencies. the whole IRON CROWN comic subdomain is three JS files, a few HTML files, one CSS file, and images. that's it.

no updates that can be trojan horse'd. I'm not even talking about malware though that's included; I'm talking about wordpress (owned by the same owners as tumblr cough) slipping in AI opt-outs in a plug-in that's turned on by default. I used to think wordpress was safe from these shenanigans because wordpress-as-a-CMS could be separate from wordpress-as-a-domain; I was wrong. they'll get you through updates.

robust reliability through the KISS principle. keep it simple stupid. malware/DDOS'ing has an infinitively harder time affecting something that doesn't have a login page/interactive forms. You can't be affected by an open source platform suddenly folding, because your "starter" template is contained files saved on your desktop (and hopefully multiple backups...). etc.

so how does this look in practice?

To be fair, you're often trading convenient new shiny UI/tools for a clunkier back-end experience. but i think it's a mistake to think your art site has to look like a MIT professor's page from 1999.

with IRON CROWN, I've effectively replicated it from a (quite good) comic template in wordpress to 98% of the same layout in pure HTML/CSS/JS via rarebit. Should rarebit's website go "poof", I've got the initial zip download of the template to re-use for other sites.

I frankly have a hard time recommending rarebit for an actively updating webcomic since you personally might be trading too many advantages like SEO tools, RSS feeds, etc away - but for a finished webcomic that you want to put in "cold storage" - it's amazing. and exactly what I needed here.

i have a lot of uncomplimentary thoughts about frank lloyd wright. part of them revolve around the fact that buildings are really not meant to last forever, especially experimental buildings made with experimental materials. i am furious, however, that a cryptocurrency grifter couple bought his only skyscraper for $10 to "save it from bankruptcy" from a tiny nonprofit, seem to be hacking it up to sell the furnishings in pieces, and have put the building up for commercial sale on a site mostly used for fast food franchises and strip malls. the building, like many frank lloyd wright buildings, is in pretty rough shape. i've seen some walkthroughs and video tours and there's a ton of water damage and then extra water damage from oklahoma winter ice. i do not know if the building as a whole is reasonably salvageable without tens of millions put into it and a new foundation put in place to take care of it.

Liz Waytkus, the executive director of Docomomo US, an organization that works to preserve modern architecture, said it strongly opposes any sale of the Wright materials. “They’re trafficked goods,” Waytkus said. “The same that you would say of pottery or vases from Egypt or Mesopotamia that were obtained through illegal ways, these pieces from Frank Lloyd Wright should be thought of in the same exact way.”

i think the above quote is a little dramatic. what the crypto couple are doing is more in bad taste than anything, bc they do own the building. in my heart of hearts, i do think pieces and fixtures designed specifically for a site should stay with the site as long as reasonably possible. they're not going to look or function quite the same anywhere else. this is the unfortunate reality of getting a superstar architect to design The Whole Site and not just the building, you're kind of (in good taste and not legally) obligated to continue to preserve The Whole Site and not just the building.

kind of a light week? i don’t have anything particularly interesting to say about any of these.

i did not plan this bc i was kidnapped last minute by my bestie to see Howl’s Moving Castle in theaters, which was a very fun movie to see on the big screen. i have not seen a movie in theaters since Birds of Prey in early 2020, kind of scary to be inside a theater again! wish covid had not so thoroughly broken my health and confidence and i also wish covid was Over over instead of a constantly rolling crisis!!

i am going to preface this section with two facts: 1) i have been playing genshin impact since version 1.0, before the second major region in the game came out and 2) i have been unemployed since january and have spent more hours per day playing this game than really anyone should in the past couple months.

ive set a bunch of very silly goals for myself bc genshin impact is largely a game about making your own fun within the grindy gacha framework and i have hit two and a half of them. you can "ascend" a character six different times to up stats by a decent percentage, and i have now ascended all 64 characters the maximum 6 times. the last one was heizou bc 1) fuck a cop and 2) fuck the machine boss in the chasm for his mats. why did THREE characters need these mats. wretched.

my next goal is to get all my characters to friendship level 10. you can increase this mostly by spending the in-game renewable resource "resin". getting your characters to friendship level 10 has no in-game benefits but does give you a fun little namecard for ur profile. i have been prioritizing my five-star characters and then going through the nations' characters in order. ive been done with the mondstadt kids for a while, i just maxed out my last five-star (dehya) today. as u can see by this list sorted by friendship level, i have five liyue characters and two inazuma characters left and just buckets and oodles of sumeru and fontaine characters.

i haven't really done much with the newest natlan character, kachina, bc i do not enjoy playing as the small children characters. there are so many tall hot ladies in this game. speaking of, the next character i will be pulling for is this tall drink of water

i have also caught one of every catachable animal! this one was very irritating bc u can only buy five nets a week. finding this one specific lizard was also very irritating. none of the point in the desert the official game map assured me were spawn points were actually spawning for some reason. had to go to several underwater caves and cross my fingers

It's up!!

Hey everyone, that Patreon I was threatening to make is now up and open! It's a little basic in terms of perks and, er, graphics at the moment (please enjoy the photo of a visitor to our windowbox), but there's an intro post, a poll to sound out what kinds of perks people might like, and the first two parts of what will be a four-part series examining fascism in My Hero Academia by comparing my beloved but very bad news Meta Liberation Army, Team Hero, and the meta-narrative messaging of the story itself.

The first part is public - I will shortly be posting some excerpts along with a direct link to the piece. The second part is currently members-only but will become public in one week; I'll post some excerpts and a link here when that happens! As I say in the intro post, it's not my intention to paywall my work, only to fund more time and freedom to work on it!

If you've enjoyed my stuff in the past, especially my deep dives or series-long examinations of this-or-that plot element, or you just love supporting writers on Tumblr, it'd mean the world to me if you'd give it a look.

(Also, a hint for the future: if you're one of the people who really liked my chapter analysis posts, definitely keep an eye on the Patreon - I'm planning to start a full-series reread soon in preparation for The Next Big Piece, and while I'm definitely not going to be doing multi-thousand word posts for every chapter, I will certainly be Taking Notes.)

I'm also working on getting a Wordpress blog up and running - Patreon's post editor is passable but very barebones, and I don't imagine reading multiple thousand word posts on its interface is going to be super easy on the eyes. Also, I still desperately crave a site to post this stuff on that has footnote functionality. So keep an eye out for that, once I get my head around Wordpress's somewhat arcane toolset enough to get a webpage designed!

The fascism essay is complete at 33K words; I'll be posting one part a week until finished while I get started on other things, including getting to some asks in the inbox here.

About Wordpress?

In a nutshell, is it a good idea?

I'm posting original short(Ish) stories on Ao3 at the moment, however since Ao3 is primarily a place for fanfiction I'm really not getting much traction. Next year I'm planning to start posting my original Superhero story "Nobody Can Help You" which is going to be an ongoing and considerably larger project.

That being said I've been wondering about creating a Wordpress account but I've never used it and I have questions.

Will I actually see an increase in readership without spending money on promotion?

How easy is Wordpress to use?

Does it paywall any features?

How difficult would it be for someone with no web design experience or knowledge to make something that looks at least halfway decent?

What's the current stance on AI?

What's the current situation with it's management? I remember hearing something about it having a Transphobe at the helm?

Yes, whoever owns Tumblr (and Wordpress I think as well?) has decided to put our data behind a paywall for the AI scrapers. Personally I feel like this is actually a good step, but nontheless Tumblr now gives you the option to opt out from your data and stuff to be sold to AI companies. Which in comparison to other sites feels quite wonderful!

Anyway, you have to go to the setting, specifically blog settings (for each blog seperately) and scroll down to visibility part and there should be option to opt out, if you want. You have to do it for each blog seperately though.

Hi, long time fan with more of an accommodating question. I am thinking of getting back into writing flash fiction like yours myself. Other than that Tumblr's proven before they can't be trusted, is there a reason you use WordPress over Tumblr or Medium or others? Do you use the hosted version or self-host?

I feel like I have more control on Wordpress. Even though Wordpress owns Tumblr, WP's management style seems more ... predictable, I guess.

While I have had to interact with tech support on both sites over the years, WP was more helpful. Which is not to say that Tumblr was unhelpful, because the support staff was nice, but Tumblr has some blanket, no-appeals, two-strikes-and-you're-out policies on bans where all help ends and my original blog is just plain gone.

But, I'm still here, of course. Just as an additional platform, rather than my one-and-only.

BTW, never post a link to anything hosted on B.d-S_m~L r from either WP or Tumblr. There will be trouble. I speak from experience. These days, all my image links are to images hosted on Tumblr, or on my own WP site, for safety.

I use the free version hosted on the Wordpress site. I'm not tech-savvy enough to self-host.

Also, Wordpress is such a widely-used platform that I'm pretty sure my archives will be importable into anything else I consider moving to.

I've never investigated Medium for my writing. I know they focus on a lot of non-fiction article-type stuff. I don't know their policy on adult content. I have no idea if there's an erotica or hypnokink community. I know that there is (or was) a lot of paywalls for readers to manage, which kinda defeats the purpose of giving this writing away for free. I don't know their policy about linking to outside vendors, like Smashwords and Amazon, or outside images, like Tumblr.

Some folks have suggested DeviantArt as having an active hypnokink community, but I just haven't had the time.

What other alternatives are out there?
