my final verdict now that i am nearing the end of this clusterfuck is that if you are setting up your own website to sell or paywall content you should not bother sending a newsletter unless you're really fucking determined

i am now paying for

SMTP2GO to actually process emails and not have them get sent straight to spam (note that the free version of this works fine for basic account stuff for your users) [this is $10 a month or $100 a year]

MailPoet refused to actually send emails for me but i still have to pay for the creator plan that doesn't include processing emails, because that's the only way to ensure that only paying members get emails (sending emails to nonpaying members would make it even more expensive) [this is $11 a month or $114 a year]

a PO box, because you're required to have an address in the footer of your emails and i'm not giving out my home address [this is $19 every three months or $58 a year]

none of which i would have to do if i just kept saying "if you want emails use an rss to email service like feedrabbit, here's a link, good fucking luck"

Hello! I couldn't find where to message you and felt silly to email the question on your business email, so you're absolutely free to ignore this!

Love your comic so so much, your characters are wonderful! As someone who also wants to make a webcomic (traditionally, not like webtoon or tapas or any scrolly place), how did you get your website made up and hosted? I'm always stuck on the details of that stuff. Making the art isn't hard, it's the technical details that I'm too boomer to understand!

Not a weird question at all, I feel like with large social media platforms being the main places where people post their work, the art of making your own website is truly lost in this day and age (I know I had to fumble a bit to make mine)

I use Bluehost to host my site, and used Wordpress's open source website builder for it. I highly recommend checking out Toocheke, which is pretty much what I used for the framework for my site. I am not a tech savy person (most of my css knowledge was editing my own tumblr back in the day), but toocheke was fairly easy to install and I was able to get most of my problems fixed by light researching.

I would highly advise against trying to make your website on wordpress itself, for some reason toocheke costed more to use since they put custom themes like that behind a paywall on their own built in builder if you decide to host with them.

the tl;dr

IRON CROWN as a free comic is now off of wordpress and can be viewed by a neat, robust HTML/CSS/JS comic template called rarebit! effectively nothing has changed for the reader, beyond expecting a little more reliability of uptime over the years.

all comic pages and previously paywalled patreon posts can also be downloaded in this art dump for free, as mentioned in the new author's notes.

the long story:

When talking shop about site/platform moves under this handle, I think it's useful to realize that us (taboo) kink artists live in an actively adversarial internet now, compared to five years ago.

meaning that we have to live with an expectation that 99% of platforms (including registrars and hosting, let alone sns sites) will ban/kick us without warning. this might explain the overly cautious/defensive way we discuss technologies - weighing how likely (and easily) the tool can be used against us vs the perks.

for example: has a harassment mob bullied the platform owners into quietly dropping lolisho artists? trans artists? does the platform/technology have a clear, no-bullshit policy on drawn kink art (specifically third rail kinks like noncon)? does the platform have a long history of hosting r18 doujin artists/hentai publishers with no issue? does the company operate in a nation unfriendly to specific kinks (eg fashkink artists fundamentally incompatible with companies based in germany, when other kinks might be OK?). i talk with a few different groups of artists daily about the above.

but that gets tiring after a while! frankly, the only path that's becoming optimal long-term is (a) putting kink art on your personal site, and if possible, (b) self hosting the whole thing entirely, while (c) complementing your site with physical merch since it's much harder to destroy in one go.

with that said - I've been slowly re-designing all of my pages/sub-domains as compact 'bug out bags'. lean, efficiently packed with the essentials, and very easy to save and re-upload to a new host/registrar near instantly (and eventually, be friendly to self-hosting bandwidth costs since that's now a distant goal).

how does this look in theory, you ask?

zero dependencies. the whole IRON CROWN comic subdomain is three JS files, a few HTML files, one CSS file, and images. that's it.

no updates that can be trojan horse'd. I'm not even talking about malware though that's included; I'm talking about wordpress (owned by the same owners as tumblr cough) slipping in AI opt-outs in a plug-in that's turned on by default. I used to think wordpress was safe from these shenanigans because wordpress-as-a-CMS could be separate from wordpress-as-a-domain; I was wrong. they'll get you through updates.

robust reliability through the KISS principle. keep it simple stupid. malware/DDOS'ing has an infinitively harder time affecting something that doesn't have a login page/interactive forms. You can't be affected by an open source platform suddenly folding, because your "starter" template is contained files saved on your desktop (and hopefully multiple backups...). etc.

so how does this look in practice?

To be fair, you're often trading convenient new shiny UI/tools for a clunkier back-end experience. but i think it's a mistake to think your art site has to look like a MIT professor's page from 1999.

with IRON CROWN, I've effectively replicated it from a (quite good) comic template in wordpress to 98% of the same layout in pure HTML/CSS/JS via rarebit. Should rarebit's website go "poof", I've got the initial zip download of the template to re-use for other sites.

I frankly have a hard time recommending rarebit for an actively updating webcomic since you personally might be trading too many advantages like SEO tools, RSS feeds, etc away - but for a finished webcomic that you want to put in "cold storage" - it's amazing. and exactly what I needed here.

i have a lot of uncomplimentary thoughts about frank lloyd wright. part of them revolve around the fact that buildings are really not meant to last forever, especially experimental buildings made with experimental materials. i am furious, however, that a cryptocurrency grifter couple bought his only skyscraper for $10 to "save it from bankruptcy" from a tiny nonprofit, seem to be hacking it up to sell the furnishings in pieces, and have put the building up for commercial sale on a site mostly used for fast food franchises and strip malls. the building, like many frank lloyd wright buildings, is in pretty rough shape. i've seen some walkthroughs and video tours and there's a ton of water damage and then extra water damage from oklahoma winter ice. i do not know if the building as a whole is reasonably salvageable without tens of millions put into it and a new foundation put in place to take care of it.

Liz Waytkus, the executive director of Docomomo US, an organization that works to preserve modern architecture, said it strongly opposes any sale of the Wright materials. “They’re trafficked goods,” Waytkus said. “The same that you would say of pottery or vases from Egypt or Mesopotamia that were obtained through illegal ways, these pieces from Frank Lloyd Wright should be thought of in the same exact way.”

i think the above quote is a little dramatic. what the crypto couple are doing is more in bad taste than anything, bc they do own the building. in my heart of hearts, i do think pieces and fixtures designed specifically for a site should stay with the site as long as reasonably possible. they're not going to look or function quite the same anywhere else. this is the unfortunate reality of getting a superstar architect to design The Whole Site and not just the building, you're kind of (in good taste and not legally) obligated to continue to preserve The Whole Site and not just the building.

kind of a light week? i don’t have anything particularly interesting to say about any of these.

i did not plan this bc i was kidnapped last minute by my bestie to see Howl’s Moving Castle in theaters, which was a very fun movie to see on the big screen. i have not seen a movie in theaters since Birds of Prey in early 2020, kind of scary to be inside a theater again! wish covid had not so thoroughly broken my health and confidence and i also wish covid was Over over instead of a constantly rolling crisis!!

i am going to preface this section with two facts: 1) i have been playing genshin impact since version 1.0, before the second major region in the game came out and 2) i have been unemployed since january and have spent more hours per day playing this game than really anyone should in the past couple months.

ive set a bunch of very silly goals for myself bc genshin impact is largely a game about making your own fun within the grindy gacha framework and i have hit two and a half of them. you can "ascend" a character six different times to up stats by a decent percentage, and i have now ascended all 64 characters the maximum 6 times. the last one was heizou bc 1) fuck a cop and 2) fuck the machine boss in the chasm for his mats. why did THREE characters need these mats. wretched.

my next goal is to get all my characters to friendship level 10. you can increase this mostly by spending the in-game renewable resource "resin". getting your characters to friendship level 10 has no in-game benefits but does give you a fun little namecard for ur profile. i have been prioritizing my five-star characters and then going through the nations' characters in order. ive been done with the mondstadt kids for a while, i just maxed out my last five-star (dehya) today. as u can see by this list sorted by friendship level, i have five liyue characters and two inazuma characters left and just buckets and oodles of sumeru and fontaine characters.

i haven't really done much with the newest natlan character, kachina, bc i do not enjoy playing as the small children characters. there are so many tall hot ladies in this game. speaking of, the next character i will be pulling for is this tall drink of water

i have also caught one of every catachable animal! this one was very irritating bc u can only buy five nets a week. finding this one specific lizard was also very irritating. none of the point in the desert the official game map assured me were spawn points were actually spawning for some reason. had to go to several underwater caves and cross my fingers

It's up!!

Hey everyone, that Patreon I was threatening to make is now up and open! It's a little basic in terms of perks and, er, graphics at the moment (please enjoy the photo of a visitor to our windowbox), but there's an intro post, a poll to sound out what kinds of perks people might like, and the first two parts of what will be a four-part series examining fascism in My Hero Academia by comparing my beloved but very bad news Meta Liberation Army, Team Hero, and the meta-narrative messaging of the story itself.

The first part is public - I will shortly be posting some excerpts along with a direct link to the piece. The second part is currently members-only but will become public in one week; I'll post some excerpts and a link here when that happens! As I say in the intro post, it's not my intention to paywall my work, only to fund more time and freedom to work on it!

If you've enjoyed my stuff in the past, especially my deep dives or series-long examinations of this-or-that plot element, or you just love supporting writers on Tumblr, it'd mean the world to me if you'd give it a look.

I'm also working on getting a Wordpress blog up and running - Patreon's post editor is passable but very barebones, and I don't imagine reading multiple thousand word posts on its interface is going to be super easy on the eyes. Also, I still desperately crave a site to post this stuff on that has footnote functionality. So keep an eye out for that, once I get my head around Wordpress's somewhat arcane toolset enough to get a webpage designed!

The fascism essay is complete at 33K words; I'll be posting one part a week until finished while I get started on other things, including getting to some asks in the inbox here.

We, welp, never see ourselves or our identities and preferred flags in sims cc, and we don't quite have flags down yet, so, we made our Very First CC Ever putting flags in fancy-schmancy picture frames instead!

Most of these are plurality-based since that is what we had the time and motivation to create, although there is exactly one gender in here too.

Since there's apparently a national holiday in China today, there's no new chapter today, we'll get it next week.

That's probably a good moment for everyone to test the new Wordpress site design xD Previously the site ran on a free template, but since I moved to self-hosting, the entire Wordpress theme gallery is unlocked.

I seriously don't understand why I can have everything available right away on self-hosted Wordpress, while managed Wordpress paywalled 90% of the features.
