Ignoring How the World Works
I attended college in Worcester, Massachusetts. Like all (old) large towns, it began with a big industry. For some cities, it was cotton; for others, it was oil; and still others, it was cars. For Worcester, it was steel. Unfortunately, the American steel industry experienced a significant downturn in the early 70s, and Worcester was no exception. Out of the ashes, a new industry emerged for the plucky town. They became a powerful university town with many prestigious colleges and businesses to support the thousands of students who invaded their city during the school year migration. How did the students get there?
Worcester’s entry into the world of aviation began in 1925, and today, they have around 55 commercial flights per day. And this is no tiny regional airport. They fly A320 and Embraer 175 planes with big airlines. American, JetBlue, and Delta.
The geography of Worcester played an essential part in this revitalization. Like all cities, there are good parts and less ideal ones. The areas around the universities have apartments, supermarkets that cater to a younger crowd, and hip clothing stores. Yet, the areas around the closed steel mills suffered from decapitated buildings and crime.
Worcester lies within a massive valley, and the center has a mountain where the city planners placed their airport. This choice was perfect for three reasons. The high location saved fuel, reduced noise, and if there were a crash, it would be far away from the citizens.
The city zoned the sides of the mountain (it is not rocky) to be a forest. This choice was great because the mountain has beautiful trees. Great job, planners!
Well… Living on prime land with a great view was too tempting. So, a big developer petitioned the city (bribed with backroom deals, there was no public debate), and they allowed a housing development.
Despite underhanded behavior, the city leaders did one thing right. They insisted that all residents of these new houses sign a document stating there would be aircraft noise. Apparently, the threat of an aircraft crashing into them was not a concern. Did I mention Worcester gets ultra cold (wing icing), the mountain is super windy, and it has fog thicker than pea soup?
The houses got built, disclosures were signed, and people moved in. “Hey, planes are loud.” So, the residents filed a lawsuit, and the city responded by limiting the airport to a few daily flights. There, done!
Of course, the airlines had broken contracts and sued the city. (Side note: The universities were also not pleased with the limited flights. They have lots of power but use it quietly.) The lawsuits went on for years. The last time I checked, the flight times were restricted from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and new residents must sign a heavy-handed disclosure.
What the heck was going on? It does not take a rocket scientist to know that planes are loud. And what was the city thinking? Anybody could see a lawsuit coming from a mile away. Are you canceling contracts with a company with lawyers more powerful than the Pratt and Whitney engines that lift their planes into the sky? It’s a no-brainer.
Did these people lack common sense? My answer is that many people ignore how the world works. We see this with the Darwin awards, drivers without auto insurance, parents who take no interest in raising their children, and companies that do not read their product reviews.
Is this really what is going on, or were they pulling a fast one? “Hey, let’s sign the paper and then sue. Yay!” Umm, no. Why? “So, I must slog through a lawsuit? Does this mean testifying, legal fees, paperwork, and court time? Pass!”
I do not think a lawsuit entered the homebuyer’s mind. Instead, they thought, “The noise will be no big deal.” They did no research and did not think ahead. And what research would be necessary? Drive to the house and sit in your car until a plane takes off. Then ask yourself: Can I live with this?” Call it an hour’s worth of easy work to understand the situation. Nope, they skipped that step. “But look at that view.”
Every day, more and more people ignore how the world works. I now regularly see kids on electric bikes/scooters flying down the middle of my street. Just this morning, I had to slam on my truck’s brakes, and the kid did not even flinch. Then he glared at me like I was a criminal. He was on the wrong side of the road, heading directly toward me without a helmet! Did he not understand that a truck always beats a kid on an electric scooter?
The word “always” sums up my point. This is not law, common sense, or an IQ issue. It is basic physics. A Toyota truck traveling at 25 MPH has a giant moving mass. It is dumb iron that will always squish a kid. No logic, law, well-meaning parent, self-driving technology, or AI smartphone application will help that kid.
Yet… I guarantee I will see that same kid riding on the wrong side of the road next week. Is he corner-cutting or being lazy? Nope. Buying a house underneath a flight path or riding on the wrong side of the street without a helmet is an intentional choice. A choice means that thought and logic were applied at the beginning.
And let’s not forget me as a kid on a bike. Sure, I rode without a helmet. We all did in the 70s. Wrong side of the road? Sure! But when a car came, we pulled over and let it pass. The ‘70s kids knew how well a car could smush them.
So… Why am I writing about this? Story characters cannot ignore how the world works. Let’s take the airport example. “Wow, this house is wonderful.” “But Fred, it’s under a flight path.” “Who cares?”
Readers care because they identify the issue and must understand the motivation behind a character’s decision. Perhaps Fred likes airplanes, or he is deaf.
What about riding an electric bike without a helmet? Let’s add some details. “Paul was the type of kid who never thought about consequences.” “He forgot to wear his helmet and texted his friend.” “Paul had no idea he was riding on the wrong side of the road.” “This was his first day riding a bike.” Readers can grab onto that logic.
What if Fred or Paul were arrogant, stupid, or delusional? It is certainly possible to have such characters, but I do not recommend this trait when creating a main character. Readers like clear motives, good decisions, and something they can relate to.
I find it fascinating to explore the disconnect between books and real life. Yet, they both must follow the rules, or there will be consequences. In real life, the consequences are lawsuits, being fired, or ending up in the hospital. The only problems with a bad character are bad reviews and low sales.
It would be nice if fewer people ignored how the world works. Then, there would be fewer accidents, more civilized conversations, and happier days. Alas, no. The best we can do is read books and watch movies in our less-than-ideal world.
You’re the best -Bill

“CORONAVIRUS IS HERE TO STAY.” COALITION WILL MARCH TO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS’ HOMES ON JULY 11 TO DEMAND THAT FINAL BAILOUT BE A PEOPLE’S STIMULUSJuly 6, 2020

MPP Media Team | [email protected]
“Coronavirus is here to stay.” Coalition Will March to Members of Congress’ Homes on July 11 to Demand that Final Bailout be a People’s Stimulus
Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang’s Humanity Forward, members of the Yang Gang, and basic income advocates join the coalition
U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern agrees to meet with protesters who will host an outdoor town hall on the People’s Stimulus in Worcester, Massachusetts
Thirty-eight rallies are planned at the homes of Democrats and Republicans including Cory Booker, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Chuck Schumer, Warren Davidson, Marcia Fudge, Raúl Grijalva, Steny Hoyer, and Nancy Pelosi
Washington D.C. — With the government having lost control over the pandemic and no end in sight to the ensuing economic depression, a coalition of organizations is coming together to demand that the final coronavirus stimulus bill bail out the people and not Wall Street. The final stimulus is being negotiated in Congress and is expected late this month.
Hosted by the Movement for a People’s Party, the organizations include Humanity Forward, Humanity First Movement, Income Movement, Move to Amend, Our Revolution Los Angeles, Our Revolution Central Connecticut, United Left, and We Want Bernie Worcester.
Appalled by the Democrats’ and Republicans’ management of coronavirus and the enormous human toll, the organizations will lead marches and honking car parades to the homes of their members of Congress and senators across the country on July 11 and demand that they commit to a People’s Stimulus. Constituents will rally outside their homes and deliver the demands directly to their members of Congress.
They will ask members of Congress to join them as they share stories of the deep anguish and pain of loved ones who died before saying goodbye, memorial services that were never possible, lost jobs and health insurance, mounting bills and desperation, rising alcohol and drug abuse, the indignity of standing in breadlines to feed one’s kids, and fear of missing housing payments and facing eviction into a pandemic.
The organizations are demanding the following in the People’s Stimulus:
1. Defund ballooning police budgets and divert funds back to schools and social services 2. Medicare for all 3. Monthly $2,000 cash payments for all 4. Cover payroll to protect small business jobs 5. Suspend rent and mortgage payments 6. Suspend debt payments including student loans and credit card loans
Medicare for all, a basic income, a paycheck guarantee, and suspending rent and mortgage payments have already been introduced in Congress. Suspending debt payments until the pandemic and economic crisis are brought to an end has been proposed.
Because both have failed to stand with working people in their time of greatest need, organizers will march on Democrats and Republicans alike. In Massachusetts, U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern has agreed to meet with protesters, who will host an outdoor and televised town hall with him to discuss the People’s Stimulus. Thirty-eight marches and rallies are on the action events map with more being planned. The rallies will be nonviolent, masks are required, and we will observe social distancing while calling for emergency relief.
The Disastrous U.S. Response to Coronavirus
The U.S. has four percent of the world’s population but more than a quarter of the coronavirus cases and deaths. Last week, Dr. Fauci told Congress “clearly we are not in control right now,” and that new cases could reach 100,000 per day, nearly doubling the current rate of about 55,000. Cases are rising in about 40 states and breaking records daily. Thousands more are dying from a lack of diagnosis and treatment of other diseases.
“It’s impossible to overstate what a corrupt catastrophe our government’s response to coronavirus has been,” said Nick Brana, national coordinator with the Movement for a People’s Party. “Instead of bracing the country, members of Congress who received advanced briefings on the impending severity of the pandemic took that information to the stock market and personally invested themselves in the economic meltdown.”
Moreover, he said, “Having failed to increase the production of masks and facing shortages at hospitals, the government lied about their effectiveness and told people not to wear or make masks in the critical early period of the pandemic. It took them weeks to reverse their instructions. After that, members of Congress gave Wall Street a multi-trillion dollar bailout and took undisclosed sums of money for their own businesses from the Paycheck Protection Program.”
The economic wreckage is unprecedented. About half of the country is without a job in the worst crisis since the Great Depression. A U.S. Chamber of Commerce poll showed that 40 percent of small businesses could close permanently in the next six months, threatening the largest wave of corporate consolidation in modern history. An analysis out of Stanford University estimates that 42 percent of layoffs will result in permanent job loss.
The communities rising up against police brutality and systemic racism after George Floyd’s killing are the same communities that are being hit the hardest by this pandemic and economic depression. Black, Latino, and indigenous peoples have the highest coronavirus infection and death rates, the highest unemployment rates, and the least wealth. That’s why the People’s Stimulus demands have the highest support among communities of color.
Other countries have shown that the economic upheaval was entirely avoidable. While American workers lose their jobs and spend weeks fighting for unemployment benefits, many European Governments simply subsidized payroll for businesses hit by the pandemic and have not experienced mass layoffs and bankruptcies. The European response was designed to protect workers, jobs and businesses while the U.S. response was designed to enrich billionaires and wipe out millions of small business competitors to large Wall Street corporations. Rampant unemployment and poverty was a deliberate policy choice by the Democrats and Republicans.
Things are about to get even worse. More than 45 million people have filed for unemployment during the pandemic, but the expanded benefits are expiring on July 31. State and federal moratoriums on evictions and foreclosures are also expiring this month threatening an “avalanche of evictions” that could throw up to 23 million people out of their homes.
“Cases are exploding. The curve is spiking. A second wave is building on top of the first. The government has lost control of the virus and the people of this country need to know: ‘Will you reverse the disaster you’ve created or are we on our own?’” asked Brana.
“Eighty years ago, social movements and independent parties forced the government to respond to the Great Depression with the New Deal. The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression demands an emergency response of at least that scale.”

Zimbits 32 “You could have died.”
Bitty tucked his laptop in his messenger bag and tried to tiptoe out of the bedroom without waking Jack. No one should be up at 5:30 in the morning – Bitty included himself in that thought, but last night staying with Jack seemed more important than getting to sleep until 6:30 and still make it to seven o’clock practice – and Jack had a game tonight.
It almost worked, until the edge of Bitty’s bag caught the door and bounced off the doorstop. That was enough for Jack to roll over and crack an eye open.
“Leaving already, bud?” he asked, voice raspy from sleep.
“I have to, sweet pea, or I’ll be late for practice,” Bitty said, going back to the bed to lean down and give Jack a kiss. “Love you. Talk after the game?”
Jack mumbled something affirmative and buried his face in Bitty’s pillow.
At least Bitty could take the car and not have to depend on trains and buses or have to do fifty minutes in a rideshare. Jack first suggested buying him a car last summer when Bitty was living in Providence, but Bitty was adamant that a car, even a used car, was too big of a gift.
“I couldn’t,” Bitty said. “My mama and daddy would have a fit, and besides, I can’t afford the insurance and all. And don’t just say you’d pay for that too.”
So Jack had simply gone out and bought himself a second car, a new Prius, and handed the second set of keys to Bitty.
“It’s my car,” Jack said. “But you have blanket permission to drive it whenever you want. And I made sure my insurance would cover you.”
Bitty had squawked, but Jack pointed out that lots of his teammates had two cars, and he didn’t need to have his SUV just to run errands. Then over the summer Bitty got used to having a car when he needed one. He didn’t keep it at Samwell all the time, but knowing he could make the drive from Providence in less than an hour made it easier to see Jack mid-week. Which was important, since neither of them usually had weekends off.
Bitty connected his phone to the car’s speakers, started a peppy playlist to keep himself awake, and headed north. Traffic wasn’t bad this early, so he should even have time to grab a coffee.
Jack’s phone was making noise. It was still dark. His alarm shouldn’t have been going off yet. Did he forget to change it for a game day?
No, not his alarm. That was his phone actually ringing. He grabbed it and looked at it. Bitty? He shouldn’t have made it back to Samwell yet. Maybe he had car trouble?
“Hello? Bits, you okay?”
“Excuse me, with whom am I speaking?”
“Who is this?” Jack’s confusion was rapidly dissolving into fear.
“This is Sergeant Zach Terry with the Massachusetts State Police, and your number is the emergency contact on this phone, which belongs to –”
“Bitty.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Eric Bittle. What happened? Is he okay?”
“First could you confirm your identity, sir.”
“Jack Zimmermann.”
The police officer continued as though he didn’t recognize Jack’s name.
“Mr. Bittle was in a car crash,” he said. “He’s being taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center. The car he was driving – a 2016 Toyota Prius – is registered in Rhode Island in your name –”
“They’re taking him to the hospital?” Jack said. “So he’s alive?”
“I can’t share medical information,” Sgt. Terry said. “The ambulance left here about 20 minutes ago. You can call the hospital, but unless you can demonstrate that you are family –”
“I’m his emergency contact –”
“On his phone,” the sergeant said, not unkindly. “If he’s conscious, he can allow them to share information with you.”
If he’s conscious? Shit, shit, shit, shit.
“In the meantime, sir, once the accident investigation is complete, what do you want to do with your car?” the sergeant said. “It’s going to be totalled, I’m sure of that, but it’s got to go somewhere.”
His car. Who cared? But it hit something. Someone? Or someone hit it?
“I don’t care about the car,” Jack said. “I’ll call my agent, they’ll deal with it. What happened? Was anyone else hurt?”
“The deer that caused the whole mess,” the sergeant said. “And the other driver that swerved to avoid it and hit your car was also injured. He was transported to the local hospital.”
So he wasn’t hurt as badly. Fuck. Jack should be happy someone wasn’t going to a trauma center, unconscious and alone, but he couldn’t bring himself to care.
If he wanted information, who would they give it to? Bitty’s parents? He should call them anyway. But Jack looked at himself, sunk onto his bedroom floor with his back against the bed, hands shaking.
He looked at his phone again, searching the contacts.
“Shitty? It’s Bitty.”
Bitty awoke to a pounding headache and the sense that he was somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be. The sheets were scratchy, and the light was too bright and he was flat on his back instead of curled up with Senor Bun.
He tried to turn to his side and found he couldn’t. Also his left shoulder and side were on fire.
“Bits?”
Jack. Jack was here. Was he hurt too?
“What happened?” Bitty asked. “Where are we?”
“UMass hospital,” Jack said, as Bitty slowly turned only his head to the other side. “Worcester. You were in a car accident this morning.”
“Your car –”
“Is not something I’m worried about now,” Jack said. “At all. How’re you feeling?”
“Hurts,” Bitty said.
“Yeah, I imagine,” Jack said. “You were in and out a few times, but they gave you some pain meds, so you probably don’t remember.”
Bitty stared at the ceiling, trying to recall. Nope. Nothing about being in this hospital. Or … a car accident?”
“What happened?” Bitty said. “I have no idea how I got here.”
“You were driving back to Samwell this morning,” Jack said, and Bitty started to nod but stopped because it made his head swim.
“I remember that. Early practice.”
“Yeah, you, um, didn’t make it to practice,” Jack said. “Someone swerved to avoid a deer near Uxbridge and they lost control and hit you in the driver’s side. Got the deer anyway, too.”
“I’m sorry,” Bitty said. “I didn’t –”
“Don’t,” Jack said. “Don’t apologize. You were driving up the highway not doing anything wrong, and some idiot drove into you. Doesn’t everyone know you don’t swerve to avoid a deer because you could cause a worse accident? You might have died.”
“But if I hadn’t driven back this morning …”
“This is not your fault,” Jack said. “It’s not your fault, and it’s not my fault for insisting that you should drive the car. I could have gotten up and taken you in the truck.”
Even in his cloudy state, Bitty got what Jack was saying.
“Sweetpea, maybe it’s not my fault but it most certainly isn’t yours,” he said. “Who’s to say we both wouldn’t have been in the hospital then?”
Jack snorted at that. “Not likely. I don’t have your lead foot.”
“Haha,” Bitty said. “Have they told you what’s wrong with me? Concussion, I’m pretty sure.”
“Yeah, once your parents told them they could let me in and talk to me,” Jack said, trying not to be bitter. At least they had allowed the hospital to pull him into the loop. It was just that they had to in the first place that rankled. “They’ll be here in a couple of hours, by the way. So, concussion, laceration to the side of your face, dislocated left shoulder, badly bruised ribs. They were afraid they were cracked, but you avoided that.”
“Ugh,” Bitty said. “How long before I can skate?”
Jack shrugged. “Too soon to tell,” he said. “Couple weeks at the very least, and longer for contact. But probably not the whole season. I should call your manager – or Hall directly. He’ll want to come see you now you’re awake, too.”
“Now – what time is it?” Bitty asked.
“About three,” Jack said.
“In the afternoon?”
Jack nodded, and Bitty could see how exhausted he looked. He was dressed in full Burger-King-robber getup, dark track pants and hoodie, he hadn’t shaved and the pallor of skin only emphasized the dark circles under his eyes.
“Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” Bitty said. “You have a game.”
“I’m not playing tonight,” Jack said. “I’m scratched for a family emergency.”
“Family, huh?” Bitty couldn’t help but smile.
“Family,” Jack said. “They’ll probably let you go either tonight or tomorrow morning. I’ll stay here until I can take you home with me.”

Breast Cancer and Bay
Massachusetts has earned the nickname "Bay State" because of its proximity to several large bays - Cape Cod, Buzzards, Asonet, Duxbury and Plymouth. Massachusetts is the sixth smallest state in the United States, with New Hampshire to the north of England, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Connecticut to the south, and New York to the west. But despite its relatively small size, Massachusetts has a total population of over 5.5 million, making it the state with the third largest number of people per square mile!
In the Bay State alone, about 5,940 new breast cancers and 0 deaths were recorded in 2013, according to the Cancer Statistics Center. If you don't know, breast cancer is a degenerative disease characterized by abnormal growth of cells. . These cells eventually form a malignant tumor that spreads throughout the body.
Donate Cars in Massachusetts
Donate Cars in Massachusetts
According to experts, one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. On average, one woman is diagnosed with this type of cancer every two minutes. Every 13 minutes, another woman dies in it.
To keep these numbers low, barriers to breast cancer awareness, prevention and diagnosis must be overcome and new methods of treatment must be unlocked. However, these will not be possible without spending enough money.
What we do to fight breast cancer
When you donate a motorhome, van, truck, car or snowmobile to our nonprofit organization, Breast Cancer Car Donations, unsolicited vehicles become funding for a wide range of breast health care programs for individuals across Massachusetts. These programs are operated by this Certified 501 (c) 3 nonprofit that we partner with:
American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF)
Aiming to narrow the gap in access to treatment and diagnosis of breast cancer among the uninsured and underprivileged, ABCF conducts its efforts to provide education, access and financial support for early detection, treatment and survival of breast cancer patients. It has established extensive link referral systems that enable full and free access to customized local resources, services and information tailored to the ethnic and language of individuals in the target breast cancer community.
Women Raising, Providing, Sharing, Inc. (WSES)
Wings is committed to providing comprehensive treatment of breast cancer, including surgery, oncology services, hospital fees, outpatient medications and many other essential services.
By donating a breast cancer car you can be sure that your earnings will go to the right person.
