“Tallpaw, that's the worst crouch I've ever seen! Don't you-?!”

“Quiet!” Dawnstripe barked. “Tallpaw, just like we practiced. To the TallSlate and back.”

Tallpaw took off at half-speed.

“A kit can go faster than that!”

“Shut up!” Dawnstripe snarled. “If you're not going to be helpful, go lay somewhere else! Tallpaw doesn't need your snake's tongue!”

“You know you don't have to do this, right? Sandgorse might be grumpy and snappish, but you don’t have to take that. He's going to be fine in the elder's den.”

“I need to find out what happened. He doesn't remember. He thinks he took someone down there but he didn't know for sure, and the Passing Cats left before we could ask them anything. If I can do this, if I can get answers for my father, then maybe…”

“Maybe?”

“I just want him to see me as worthy of being his son.”

“Oh, Tall…” Dawnstripe purred sadly, pressing her side to his. “I know it doesn't feel like it, but you were always worthy of being his son. He hasn't been a very good father to you.

"I don’t think he'd have been any better had Finch lived. He's always going to be like this, and his early retirement certainly won't help things… Are you sure this will help you?”

“Yes.”

“Then go, kid. Good luck. Remember what I've taught you. Hunting will be challenging, because we usually run our prey down and you can't do that in close-quarters.

"I think your battle training might help there. It relies on being fast enough to hit your opponent but avoid getting hit in return. Do you want to tell anyone else, or should I?”

“I…”

Talltail choked up.

How could he explain his quest to his mother and heart-father?

To Barkface and Shrewclaw?

Would Sandgorse even say anything if he told the older tom?

“I'd be glad to do it, if only to see the look on Sandgorse’s smarmy face when he realizes he ran you off.”

“I'm not trying to run away-.”

“You are, even if you come back. But I don’t blame you at all. I'd run too, if Heatherstar could spare a runner.”

“Do you know why she can't? She did close the tunnels.”

“Yes, but the tunnelers have to get used to a very different method of hunting and fighting than they're used to. We runners will all have our paws full teaching our grown Clanmates like apprentices. Stars help me, this is gonna be rough!”

“Maybe I shouldn't-.”

“Nope, you're going! Remember how we practiced following through? It'll be put to good use during this trip. Cats will understand.”

“I kinda figured they'd all be mad at me.”

“That'd be Sandgorse and him alone. And we'll all be barking at him for the rest of his days if he tries any of his rabbit-dung on you.”

this part covers palebird from when talltail returns to the end of the book for context, go to part one!

when talltail returns, palebird essentially acts like he was never gone.

maybe she genuinely believed that talltail was planning to return or something, as in the previous part/before he leaves, she tells the kits that he will be back soon.

though, some argue this shows that palebird didnt care enough about him to notice he was gone; it could also be another form of dissociation as pointed out by an anon message i got here. i go into more detail in the response from that anon!

in anycase, this is the first behavior from palebird where she doesnt seem to care about talltail, or is brushing him off while not being tired. this is in page 441- so about the end of the book. lilywhisker does give her a stern look and backs him up, though. he and palebird also make it up in the end.

later one, palebird and tallstar are seen to be respectful towards eachother, and he notes that his mother seems happier. i assume that by now she has recovered from her ppd and kitting(s).

i think that it helps that woolytail is a genuinely good mate to her. sandgorse, from the time that he was alive, was genuinely a piece of shit towards palebird and talltail once he showed that he didn't want to be a tunneler. with both of their grief and palebirds ppd passing, this sweet scene occurs;

i think that if talltail had explained what he was going through earlier in the book, palebird might have been able to comfort him. throughout tallstars revenge, he makes bias assumptions on palebirds character due to his own grief and issues- not to mention sandgorses harsh words towards him.

with this bias gone, however, palebird is shown to be comforting towards tallstar. he is able to actually see her. and he acknowledges that his mother did love him in his leader ceremony here;

well, that is all of the palebird scenes! i think that she was never meant to actually be abusive in text like so many people have said. is she distant? yes! but is it out of malicious intent? no. is it abuse? hell no!

throughout these pages, she is struggling with ppd, loosing her kit, best friend, and then sandgorse. both of her kittings were immensely hard on her body- her first one taking upwards of 8 months to actually recover, if i calculated correctly. she is shown being kind to talltail, to worry for him and care for him through the book. is she happy though for most of the book? well, no. but that is not a crime, or neglecting talltail.

talltail is a bias narrator for most of the book. he is dealing with his own grief/insecurities from being heavily bullied and his own father being cruel to him. so, he automatically thinks that the entire clan hates him- and it comes out in a very ugly way. he has very ugly and cruel thoughts from this. he makes assumptions of palebird that arent true- that she wouldve loved finchkit more, that she doesnt love him. that she should’ve stayed with sandgorse. but these thoughts and feelings arent meant to be facts, or solid evidence. the evidence of how she truly is is within her actions. i think that people read this book when they were younger and took these feelings as if they were true and based in solid fact- but they aren't. palebird is shown to love him. and she deserves to move on from that piece of crap that is sandgorse.

the entire book is him getting over his grief and learning to forgive and understand. and he does learn to understand palebird, in the end. or, at the least, understand that she did love him.

My Own Thunderclan Family

I think is impossible to completely erase incest from thunderclan, but you can tame it by stopping cats from being either direct cousins or change parents of certain cats. Here some of my own hcs:

Pinestar and Poppydawn are cousins through Sweetbriar and Fallowsong

Squirrelwhisker and Eaglestorm are Windflight and Woolytail's parents

Stormtail, Stonepelt and Rockfall are Mistpelt and Stagleap's Kits

Sunstar, Featherwhisker and Speckletail are Larkwing and Flamenose's Kits,

Tawnyspots, Robinwing and Thrushpelt are Rainfur and Windflight's kits

Fuzzypelt is Hollypelt's only surviving kit

Halftail(Mumblefoot's Kit), One-Eye(Harepounce's Kit) and Dappletail are childhood friends and become apprentices before the start of Bluestar's prophecy

also Squirrelfight and Leafpool are born earlier than Spideleg, Shrewpaw and Whitewing

Sorreltail and Brackenfur only had one litter, Cinderheart, Honeyfern, Poppyfrost and Molepaw

Ashfur is Dovewing and Ivypool's real dad, but Whitewing lied for a while about Birchfall's parentage, who instead fathered Applefur's kits Spikefur and Grassheart

During Bramblestar's Storm, Berrynose said Thunderclan needs more kittens, but being a former loner, he is no purist, but more proud of being part of Thunderclan itself, so they welcome Stormcloud, Sorrelstripe and Fernsong

Sorrelstripe is actually Jessy, a young and cool solid brown molly who had a crush on Bramblestar, but he saw as a daughter instead after losing Hollyleaf; Fernsong instead is Smoky and Floss's kit together with Coriander, who joins the clans after falling in love with Ivypool during the storm

Squirrelflight and Bramblestar don't have kits as she is barren, they had two, Dandelionkit and Juniperkit, but died early

So Alderheart, Sparkpelt and Hollytuft are Lionblaze and Cinderheart's kits

Instead of Sparkpelt, who turns into an antagonist after River of Fire, Hollytuft and Larksong are Nightheart and Finchlight's Parents

Toadstep is actually Eaglewing, Shellfur, Stemleaf and Plumstone's father

I’m on chapter 23 of Tallstar’s Revenge

Maybe it’s just the fact that this book is being narrated by Kirby Heyborne instead of MacLeoud Andrews, but this book is refreshing. To be fair, the last two Warriors books I listened to were Yellowfang’s secret and Leopardstar’s Honor, which are infamously…. not as great. But yeah, I’m really digging this story!

I like Tallpaw’s complicated feelings about his father, Sandgorse, especially after Sandgorse dies in the tunnels. I like how Tallpaw is allowed by the narrative to be irrational, contradictory, and angry— even violent, while dealing with grief. I like how Tallpaw is stubborn and a bit contrarian, has a little bit of a victim complex but at the same time really is being victimized by his denmate, Shrewpaw (What’s that dickhead’s problem anyway??). I like how Windclan is so different from the other three Clans.

I saw Sandgorse’s death coming a mile away, but I don’t care. I’m not expecting to be surprised with the plot. Gotta give them props for having Palebird get pregnant with Woolytail so soon, I knew they’d eventually be a couple as soon as they were seen walking “so close their pelts brushed” hahaha. I think them having kits so soon is the perfect amount of drama to add to Tallpaws life without feeling like the authors are excessively torturing him.

I’m enjoying it, it’s making me feel like I did when I was a kid reading Warriors books for the first time.

On the other hand it’s hard to ignore that Tallpaw is able to be a full complex character (at least, for a book about feral cats) with an interesting story, while Bluestar, Yellowfang, Leopardstar, and Leafstar all have massive portions of their supereditions fussing over whether or not they have kittens, and they’re all punished for it either way. All except maybe Leafstar. Even though Leafstar isn’t exactly punished for having kits, she still has to fuss over whether she can have a mate and kits and still be leader or not. Literally right after FireSTAR had kits. And later, Crookedstar had kits as leader and didn’t think twice about it. His mate, Willowbreeze was punished though, she died. But that’s all for another post another time (maybe).

So first, we´re tracing Gorsefang´s lineage to nail down his traits. Gorsefang is canon Gorsepaw, child of Morningflower and Cloudrunner, raised by Jake and Talltail.

We know nothing of Cloudrunner´s ancestry, so we´re running with him being an outsider and focus on Morningflower.

Grandmother Mistmouse: cinnamon tabby, classic

Grandmother Palebird: black solid tuxedo

Grandfather Woolytail: Blue ticked tuxedo

Literally any of these could be carrying colorpoint, lol. What I don´t see is any way for her to be tortoiseshell, which is the other canon-description we have of her. Cloudrunner is light gray, could easily be carrying chocolate.

Canon Pinestar is described as a dark reddish-brown tom, solid colored. Some people make him a ginger, but all gingers are tabby, even with the ticked gene. So, we´re going a different route. I present to you ...

Chocolate Pinestar! Carrying dilution from his mom, who is a light brown tabby. This means that all of his kids carry the chocolate gene, but no dilution. Also, all his kids have a little a, so he could be a solid but still carry one mc. Wether or not he´d be mackerel or classic doesn´t matter, what matters is that he has one mc to pass down to Tiger. Now onto the inhibitor. Because Leopardfoot is mottled black and I´m a bit more attached to that and she has a sibling that influences a few more cats, I´m giving the I to Pinestar. That means both Pinestar and probably Oakstar were smokes!

He´s also a shorthair and carries one little l for Tiger to inherit.

A mottled black molly. Wtf is a "mottled" cat? Google is giving me torties, but there´s literally no ginger in this family tree. So, we´re going with ....

Blue tabby Leopardfoot! I made her a blue tabby so Tiger wouldn´t be too similar to her, and blue tabbies can be pretty dark so she´s probably as dark as it goes. She also carries one classic tabby gene for Tiger, mackerel for Mist and one little a for Night.

for context, go to part one! this commentary goes from when palebird is expecting kits, to when talltail leaves.

the time we see palebird, she expects kits with woolytail.

during this scene, palebird thinks of tallpaw first. she seems to finally be recovered and is happy. so, she is therefore more affectionate towards tallpaw. even woolytail says that he will always be his first kit.

tallpaw is still grieving and angry over sandgorses death. he feels hurt that she moved on, but like stated here, she obviously doesnt know.

i think that his reaction is due to his anger still, and also that earlier in the book, shrewpaw told him that nobody would miss him if he was gone. i think that he internalized shrewpaws incredibly awful statement, and therefore feels hurt and insecure that palebird is “moving on” from him and sandgorse. however, she is shown still supporting tallpaw.

i think that many people when reading this may have taken tallpaws feelings as facts, or the truth. in reality, these ideas come from a place of clouded judgement and anger. palebird is allowed to move on and be happy- and she isnt forgetting tallpaw here! instead, she is trying to include him in her new family and in her life now that she has recovered. him being bias is even reflected in the text when he tells doespring this.

i think that while her words were harsh, he also well. essentially said that palebird shouldve stayed miserable the rest of her life. and to note, sandgorse was not a good father or mate.

later on, she gives birth. the birthing process is hard for her. after giving birth, she is extremely anxious for her kits.

woolytail says that she will be a good mother like she was with talltail. talltail is bitter, and thinks that the kits should get used to palebird being too tired. she just gave birth, however, so she is obviously going to be tired...? he is still incredibly bitter her due to sandgorses death, and everybody "moving on". he cant see here that palebird has been recovering, and is therefore more cheerful to talltail.

palebirds anxiety eventually boils over when he attempts to move a kit. this is the first time in the book that she is mentioned to have actually snapped at him.

i believe this is because she is worried about the kits. this is backed up by the entire previous page being her worried about the kits. it isnt meant to be a direct attack on talltail, but with his anger and grief still rampant he obviously takes it as such.

he also generally does not feel wanted by any cat which is stated in later pages. so, i dont think this is showing that palebird is a bad cat- just anxious.

palebird is surprised at this. she doesnt offer him any condolences, but i think it can be explained by this;

she states that talltail will not be gone long. i think that genuinely she believes that talltail is going away temporarily for a short period of time, and that he would come back. this is later reinforced when he does come back, and she acts like he was never gone. (see part 4)
