Took a day trip to Kentucky to visit bourbon distilleries! People come from all over, and it’s in my relative backyard! Went on two tours - the first was to Woodford Reserve. This is what they serve on Delta flights, and I don’t know much about bourbon, but it’s the first one I think of.
Interesting seeing the stills and sour mash - like the eternal sourdough starter! Bourbon really only came back in the 90s, back then (oof) there were only six distilleries, and how there are over a hundred in Kentucky! Small batch, moved into an old distillery’s facility - which you’ll see a lot!
Tasting was nice, took me a while to taste anything besides “burning.” The bourbon hall candy was a nice touch. Bought a bottle of the normal woodford reserve to take home.

starter for: @nickambrose
location: Versailles (the one in Kentucky)
"It should be around here." Orion cast a glance around, taking in his surroundings as he lead Nick through the little piece of forest towards the building already visible through the treeline. Why the Woodford Reserve Distillery was so far outside of town, seperated from the rest, Orion didn't know. He had paid enough credits to get them relatively close, but they'd still landed just a bit off, in the woods surrounding them.
"This should just be a quick run. Anything specific you are going for?" Orion asked, casting a glance back at the other man to make sure that Nick was they following as they stepped onto the grass surrounding the Distillery. The building was a little overgrown, clearly abandoned, but otherwise in good condition. What they were looking for was generally obvious- whiskey. "I should be able to take one or two of the barrels back. It should be aged well enough by now."
Orion took a step towards the building. "Do you use the teleports on your own frequently? I believe we have not made a run together."

Last day in Lexington and making the most of it. Traveling north out of Lexington to The Ark Encounter. Very powerful message of God’s hand upon mankind. We asked ourselves “how can one not believe?”. Spent most of the morning here taking in God’s word. 🙏🏻❤️ Left here and headed through another part of the countryside brimming with old barns, homes, canopies of trees starting to change color and narrow winding roads. Just beautiful! Our destination is Woodford Reserve Distillery. This distillery was founded in the late 1800’s, survived through prohibition and is now the largest distillery and distribution in the world. The grounds were beautiful and the bourbon tasting and history was fascinating. The two red barrels are the bourbon that will served at the 2024 Kentucky Derby 150th celebration. We enjoyed the Double Oaked bourbon that was very smooth and delicious paired with chocolate! Our day was complete with a final drive through the countryside and saying goodbye to the Thoroughbred horses.

i appreciate youre dedication in returning to this post
i don’t get yore url
it’s like your scottish or irish or something?
or is it a reference?
is it like a reference to drinking and drinking culture and stereotypes about scottish and irish people?
irish whiskey is a joke and i can’t stand guinness as it is in america, but i’d love to try the authentic guinness in uk experience because i hear it’s something else. not going to the uk anytime soon as a trans person though.
scotch is sometimes good, i’m don’t have a preference for islay or highland in particular but like samplings from both styles
eye love both jura and dalmorez jura makes an excellent scotch with incredible value with the 10 year although i don’t think that the 12 year is worth the price hike, but the 18 definitely is.
dalmore also has an incredible value with the 12 yr, but the 15 year is really where it’s at.
i love parks and rec but lagavulin is basically undrinkable for me. anything too heavily smoky or peated is just a no.
aye prefer bourbon usually, neat ofc. i prefer cheaper bourbon with it’s sweetness and subtle spice over a scotch that tastes like chest hair and toxic masculinity.
four roses is a nice bourbon to stock that i can drink neat and have a pleasureable experience and also not feel bad for mixing into some coke.
basil hayden’s is the sweet spot for me, price for quality.
pappy van is absolutely incredible and worth the hype but not the difficulty obtaining it or the price tag.
if ewe want the pappy van experience without breaking the bank, weller and weller antique are made from the same distillery and mash but aren’t ridiculously overpriced. still rather hard to obtain now that people have caught on to how good it is and probably not worth the price second hand, but i’ll almost always pick up a bottle if i see one.
recently discovered jefferson ocean which is probably one of the most unique but also most enjoyable bourbons with some kind of gimmick, but the gimmick is that it’s aged in oak barrels at sea and it tastes like the ocean air in the best possible way. pricey, but worth an occasional splurge.
if im doing whiskey cocktails, i like to stock woodford reserve bc it’s a drinkable bourbon with a generic enough flavor profile that people are familiar with it but also enough depth to complement most classic whiskey cocktail combinations, bc let’s be honest, i’m not making cocktails unless i’m having friends over and they don’t care enough for the fancy shit.
honestly the best whiskey in my opinion overall comes from japan. the hibiki harmony is in my opinion, a masterpiece, and every time anyone i know flies international, i ask them to pick up a bottle from hibiki harmony master select because it’s just simply excellent elegance, and for some reason it’s only available at duty free stores. honestly a tragedy.
suntory is a nice basic whiskey with one of the cleanest profiles you can get in a whiskey, while still managing to be interesting.
not a fan of the nikka coffee grain personally but i can appreciate it’s uniqueness and complexity without loving it myself.
2/10 i don’t understand your url
reblog this with a note or tag and i’ll rate your user name with no filter or censorship
get ur ass roasted (or complemented) if u dare

I firmly believe that perception is reality, especially in the alcohol industry. This became apparent to me when my dad and I went on the Bourbon Trail, a part of Kentucky that has distilleries and tasting room for visitors. I am not much of a bourbon drinker myself, but I was in Kentucky for a SEC football game and knew how much my dad was looking forward to going to Woodford Reserve, Maker's Mark, and Bulleit. He perceived those as the best quality and me not knowing much, I was just along for the ride. Much to my dad's surprise, at the end of the trip when he asked me which bourbon I enjoyed the most, I told him Evan Williams. He could not believe that, especially given the price point differential between his favorites and mine, but to me, as someone who doesn't know much about quality, my perception was based solely on the tour experience. Evan Williams built the brand for me in how the tour was laid out, explaining the history and making it fun. It was more interactive and the tasting room was brighter, as you can see below. To me the quality was in the experience because I didn't know enough about the taste to truly judge that and it didn't matter to me. I derived quality from how my time was spent there more so than the taste.
This is the halo effect in action - my assumption of quality was based on my experience and expectations. What's curious about this is that I would not describe myself as the target market for any bourbon, so it begs the question of should Evan Williams (or any bourbon brand for that matter) be marketing to me? Does my perception of the brand matter if I'm not a frequent drinker?
The same can be said for most people drinking wine. They associate their selections with a fun time in Napa or wishing that they were in France (also coming from someone in a very French family!) and less so on the grapes or harvesting process. I know some people who pick wine solely based on the label or how pretty the bottle is! These aspects are as much a part of the brand as the quality is and it serves brands to think holistically about the experience, which goes well beyond the quality, though high quality certainly helps.
