Honeysuckle (aka Woodbine)
Bonds of love
Genus Lonicera L. (1753)
The sentiments of bonds of love and related, and of devoted affection, are easily reached from the honeysuckle - it climbs forest trees and holds them tight, marking them for life:
The Honeysuckle has ever been the emblem of firm and fast affection—as it climbs round any tree or bush, that is near it, not only clinging to it faster than Ivy, but keeping its hold so tight as to leave its mark in deep furrows on the tree that has supported it. (Ellacombe 127)
Other writers expand upon the simple idea. For Phillips in Floral Emblems:
This happy emblem reminds us that sweetness of disposition is a firmer tie than dazzling beauty. (83)
Waterman goes in a different direction:
It was said that this feeble tree, thus shooting into the air, would overtop the king of the forest; but, as if its efforts were unavailing, it soon recoiled, and with graceful negligence adorned its friendly supporter with elegant festoons and perfumed garlands. (102)
Adams, in his Oriental Textbook, compares the woodbine in verse to an adoring bride hanging from her lover. Tyas in Language of Flowers, on the other hand, makes the ties of the honeysuckle not to a person, but to the land where one's childhood was spent.

Season one is complete, long live season one.
Parkdale Haunt was a learning experience. We made that show with only the vaguest idea of how creating an audiodrama worked. We just kind of did what we knew and hoped it would work out. And it did! We had such an amazing run. But that means you go into your next show with this quiet nervousness around it, will this be ok? Will people like it? Will they listen? You set a standard and then you have to live up to it again. I would be lying if I said that I never found that daunting as we ramped up into production.
But we're an independent show. We don't have to answer to anyone other than ourselves, so that means that we have to make the show that we want to make. In the end, every part of this is a labour of love, so we have to love what we're creating. And it's tiring, it is tiring during the depths of recording, it is tiring when the sound design is being put in and requiring Ian to spend hours upon hours carefully placing SFX, it is tiring when I'm sitting there, cutting hours and hours and hours of raw audio into something resembling proper dialogue. But it's so much fun. I am incredibly lucky to get to make another show with people I love and care so much about. What a joy! What a blessing. Creating art is terrifying but it's also wonderful. It's also terrible sometimes but it's mostly wonderful, and what luck to have found an audience for it. We can't make this stuff without our amazing cast, our phenomenal composer (hi Phil!), support from our friends and families, and the listeners who post and send us such wonderful comments and art and fan letters and everything else. I want to highlight the incredible and irreplaceable Andy Kelly's art one more time, he brought the show to life in a new way. And of course, to Emily and Ian, my creative partners but most of all my friends, none of this exists without the three of us. Forever thankful to be able to create and grow alongside you both. I know that I post about this stuff a lot, but I think it is important. Remember those who you create alongside. Speak their names. Thank them for their work. Everything we do is so short and fragile. Celebrate the good because someday you will only be able to look back. Create the things that you will later treasure. Hold close the relationships that make you better for having them. We are all but trees in fall, brilliant and delicate, colours that fade with the winter winds. Thank you for listening. We'll see you soon.

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 16 July 2024
In this hedgerow Lonicera periclymenum (honeysuckle, woodbine) was providing nectar-rich flowers, especially for moths or long-tongued bees, with the flowers being highly scented at night. This deciduous woody climber develops bright red berries in autumn which are a great source of food for birds.

Have you heard the podcast Woodbine? It's about an assistant at a private detective agency who gets stabbed to death and brought back as a vampire by her boss (who is a secret vampire). There's trauma and stuff it's a good listen.
this is a collection of all my favorite words and sounds sick as fuck, I shall investigate at the next opportunity

mARTch Day 30: Gift
Today I’m gifting these lovely people:
@the-smol-cricket: my bestie, here’s Misty. Hope you like!!!
@dead-west-podcast: Devin, your podcast just stumbled onto my dash one day and I’ve been hooked ever since. The blend of horror, western vibes, history, relationships, and inclusion is so unique and I’m thrilled to be on this journey. Conrad, Auggie, Father Gregory, Vic, and even dear-old Louis are such fun characters. I love acting them out the first time I listen to an episode. The theme song lives in my head rent-free. So happy you’ve been liking my art of the podcast! Here’s another one, kinda how I envision Conrad while sin-eating (ik we haven’t seen it fully in the pod but whatever). Thank you so much for all Dead West has given me, and I look forward to more :D !
@toseeclearly & Emily Kellogg & Ian Boddy: Hi Alex, Emily, and Ian (mainly Alex here on Tumblr)! Thank you so much for your work and talent on Woodbine. It really hit me like a freight train I found it, bc I was so impressed to hear a podcast that polished and beautiful from the instant I hit play on the trailer. The setting, worldbuilding, soundscaping, writing, music, and voice acting are just so gorgeous!! The detective trio hold such a special place in my heart. To thank you, I decided to animate a couple lines from episode 10! I was originally gonna do just Bea, but what I recorded as practice cut off at the perfect time for a meme, so I just went with it. It makes me laugh every time I watch, and I hope it does the same for y’all too! Looking forward to Season 2 later this year :) .

Audiodrama Sunday! The Days May be Dark but the horror is…IDK darker but in a gayer way?
What has Lou been listening to recently which might distract you from thinking about The Situation?
Book of Constellations (@bookofconstellations) - Beautiful series full of hope about an alien on a road trip through America. Keith's writing is always deep, mature and full of kindness.
Woodbine - Look, they had me at the lesbian vampire detectives. And it's the Parkdale Haunt team so you KNOW it's gonna be great.
Amelia Project (@ameliapodcast)- Amelia's special brand of poignant comedy should help cheer you up. Some delightfully funny episodes recently. Loved Maty's debut as a small child of Hamelin and best boy Rhys being Valleys As All Fuck.
Poe: Evermore - OK actually this one is very dark but there is truly some quality acting in this and the writing is rich and gorgeous. Retelling of classic Poe stories within the setting of his life. I thought Vic was very good in Chapter 4 and Tanja in everything she's in especially the very sad bit and don't ask me about Harlan's character but I am listening very respectfully to both him and Giancarlo Herrera anyway moving swiftly on to
Professor Chronomier - The newest and final season of my favourite time travelling Professor is out, I will be normal I promise (I will not be normal TIME VILLAIN TEAMUP TIME VILLAIN TEAMUP)
Otherwise I have also been filling in more of the recommended listening, and binged Archive 81, Limetown and the Black Tapes so I am no longer an ignoramus about those ones.
Happy listening, love you all, this too shall pass
