International Women’s Day is March 8
March 8 is International Women’s Day. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women globally. International Women’s Day reminds us to address gender inequalities and advocate for women’s rights.
This year, we highlight the important work of three students from the UMass Boston School for Global Inclusion and Social Development who are working to promote a more inclusive and equitable world for women and people of all genders around the world.
The following blog posts were written by Shymaa Bedaiwy Allam, Odgerel Dashzeveg, Shahrzad Sajadi, and Joy Chrysyl L. Solon.
“A Women, Helping Women Help Women”: Women’s Financial Inclusion in Egypt
By: Shymaa Bedaiwy Allam
Shymaa speaking at a financial empowerment for women and youth session at the Arab Savings and Financial Literacy Conference in Cairo, October 2023.
I focus my research on the impact of financial inclusion and microfinance on women’s empowerment. Microfinance came into the spotlight worldwide as one of the most debated development tools right after Muhammed Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. Most of the debate around microfinance focuses on the impact of extending these financial services to people who experience poverty and whether microfinance services have helped people out of poverty.
My research highlights the uniqueness of microfinance staffing and the critical role microfinance staff play in extending microfinance services to those who experience poverty. I seek to answer questions like, what is the impact of loan officers on microfinance's mission? With microfinance being first introduced to women, it is meaningful to focus on the role of women loan officers on helping their women clients. Women loan officers also must navigate the assumption that women are better lenders than men. I also address the impact of microfinance regulations on empowering women in Egypt. I aim to map the challenges and opportunities for women within the microfinance market to prevent over-indebtedness and other potential harm to women entrepreneurs.
I was the first woman microfinance regulator in Egypt. I have previously worked as the financial inclusion programme manager with UN Women, and as a policy development specialist at a US Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded activity on Micro-Enterprise Finance (EMF). I have also coordinated many of Sanabel’s regional projects (the Microfinance Network for Arab countries). I am now pursuing Doctorate studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the field of Global Inclusion and Social Development.
I hope to continue working as an expert in poverty alleviation issues for women. I want to continue analyzing the impact of economic policies on the welfare of women. I wish to do this as a university staff member, so that I also have the opportunity to teach the next generation. In my words, I am “a woman, helping women help women.”

Celebration of International Women’s Day in Mongolia
By: Oge Dashzeveg

Mongolia is one of the many countries that celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 as an official public holiday. This tradition dates back to the socialist era when women's suffrage as working mothers was celebrated and rewarded. Socialism promoted working mothers through education, work, and care. In return, women were committed to contributing to the communist production of the economy equally to men and the reproduction of the workforce within their full ability as mothers. This holiday is celebrated as Mother's Day in both public and private spheres.
In post-socialist Mongolia, this public holiday still holds the legacy of Mother's Day but is celebrated more as a Women's Day. Since transitioning from a planned economy communist system to a democratized market capitalism, the contact between the state and women has changed. The state still provides limited care for women, but education and work shifted to the invisible hands of market regulation. The state continues to celebrate women's motherhood by holding mass public events and awarding women who have given birth to four or more children.
On the flip side, women are fighting for their de-facto rights, urging the state to understand the reality women have been dealing with since the transition. The unintended consequences of failing economies have trapped many women in extended unemployment, underemployment, and poverty. This exacerbates their socioeconomic vulnerability, making them more susceptible to social and domestic abuse and discrimination.
Today, the younger generation of women is becoming the voice for all, advocating for generational gender equality in politics, inclusive access to economic opportunities, reducing the motherhood penalty, and promoting welfare mothers' transition to decent and flexible work.

Memoir Writing Workshops with Syrian Refugee Women and Girls
By: Shahrzad Sajadi
Laundry on lines outside the informal settlement camps in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, Photo credit: Naoki Tokyo.
After conducting a series of workshops with Syrian refugee youth and needs assessment studies with other experts in the field around the rise in the rates of child marriages in the region, my colleague Dr. Valerie Karr and I ran a series of empathy-focused memoir writing workshops with seven Syrian refugee women and girls in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The stories that emerged from these workshops tell the tale of loss and pain as well as empowerment and tremendous strength. These workshops were facilitated by our local partner, Nahida Nusair who met with the women on a weekly basis and kept in contact with them even after the workshops were over.
Here is an excerpt from one of the stories of the young women:
I am one of the women who decided their fate with their own hands. I decided to be one of the married young girls. I thought marriage was a white dress, pretty jewelry, a big party, dancing, and singing. And I thought that every day would be better than the one before. And I used to think that my husband would love me so much and would take care of me and give me everything I asked for, whatever I wanted would be ready in front of me and that he would take me every day to a place, and we would be very happy. Do you think this is what marriage is? I did."

The Impact of Typhoon Yolanda and Climate Change on Women in Philippines
By: Joy Chrysyl Llido Solon
Joy Solon with a view of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in the background.
The changing climate has caused an increase in extreme natural disasters. Typhoon Yolanda, one of the most destructive typhoons ever, made landfall through central and southern Philippines on November 8, 2013. Over 150,000 families were evacuated, and 6,300 lives were lost[1]. As a PhD student in the School of Global Inclusion and Social Development, my primary research project centers on the climate justice movement for the loss of life and damages caused by Typhoon Yolanda.
Climate change has a disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities of the global majority. In the aftermath of natural disasters, women and young girls living in poverty become vulnerable and are placed in harmful situations, including early marriage, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation[2]. Women are harshly affected by climate change and natural disasters because of the inequities brought forth by gendered social roles, cultural norms, social marginalization, discrimination, and poverty[3],[4]. Additionally, the masculinity of climate change discourse results in masculinist ideologies, policies, and solutions. This leaves the vulnerabilities of women behind and out of the decision-making process3,[5]. Therefore, the climate justice social movement must establish a women’s rights framework and include a focus on gender inequalities.
I hope to include women-led grassroots networks, climate justice activists, and members and leaders of the community affected by the typhoon as participants in my research. I intend to offer a feminist critique of climate justice that will promote authentic advocacy of women and girls.

November 17 2022 Barcelona
I'm happy to be involved with the women's movement here in Barcelona as well as back in the U.S. Today I attended the STEM Women's Congress with our good friend, Carol, who is one of the organizers, at the Cosmo Caixa Museum. We are pictured above with Dr. Carmen Hijosa, one of the presenters and an entrepreneur who has created a company which converts pineapple leaf waste into a textile called Pinatex.
Carol and I got there early and it was wonderful to watch all the women (and some men) streaming in and filling the seats in the auditorium.
The hosts were very professional and presented the program in a fun and interesting way.
Many well-known companies were sponsors of the event, most of them in the field of technology, but some financial institutes also supported it.
Eva Diaz was the first presenter. She is the CEO of the STEM Women's Congress. She graduated with a degree in Information Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona with a Masters from the School of Business Management and she has had twenty years of experience in marketing and communications. She currently is the CEO of Cooking Communications, an agency she co-founded in 2014. She welcomed us all and outlined the program which was to follow.
Laia Bonet, the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona and responsible for digital transition, sports, territorial and metropolitan coordination, and international relations, also welcomed us to the conference. She is a professor at several universities, was the secretary of the government of Catalonia from 2007 to 2010, and a member of the Catalan Parliament from 2010 to 2012.
Joana Barbary, one of the directors of the STEM Women's Congress, spoke about the mission of the STEM Women's Congress. She graduated with a degree in journalism from Pompeu Fabra University and has a BA in Business Sciences from Vic University. She has worked in strategic and organizational consulting as well as being Barcelona's Counselor for Communications, Citizen Assistance, and Technology and then became the Deputy Mayor of Economic Promotion, Innovation, and Open Government. She was also the Director General for Digital Security for Barcelona.
The other presenters, most of them entrepreneurs, appeared onstage, along with children who were attending the event with their schools.
Lluis Soler, the Human Resource Director of Bureau Veritas and Mariola Martin, a Line Manager at Bureau Veritas, spoke next. Bureau Veritas is a French company specializing in testing, inspection, and certification founded in 1828. With a dedicated team of certification specialists and more than 60 accreditations, Bureau Veritas offers a wide range of customized audit and certification services across quality, health and safety, environment, and social responsibility.
Judit Garcia Borges is the Human Resources Director of the TMB, the metropolitan transit authority of Barcelona. The TMB's mission is to offer the most sustainable, equitable, and excellent integrated mass transit services possible to metro Barcelona. She spoke about their policies and programs for the attraction, training, and development of the TMB workforce.
Ingrid Rojas, who has worked for fifteen years for IBM Global Services in Spain, spoke about opportunities for women in leadership in technology companies, and specifically at IBM. Some of what she said wasn't very encouraging, such as the disappointing progress of women in upper level management and on boards of technology companies, despite an increased awareness of gender imbalance. In other words, in my opinion, the Technology Patriarchy doesn't want women there and is doing everything in its power to prevent women from achieving full equity in leadership.
However, progress IS being made, despite this lack of leadership by the males in power, because as more women move into positions of leadership they are slowly creating a more gender-balanced leadership.
IBM has been a leader in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion so it has been a good place for women to get experience in managing and moving into higher management positions.
IBM is working in elementary, middle, and high schools internationally to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion, especially for girls, through STEM programs and the "She Can" campaign.

Silicon Valley Bank collapse renews calls to address disparities impacting entrepreneurs of color
CNN — When customers at Silicon Valley Bank rushed to withdraw billions of dollars last month, venture capitalist Arlan Hamilton stepped in to help some of the founders of color who panicked about losing access to payroll funds. As a Black woman with nearly 10 years of business experience, Hamilton knew the options for those startup founders were limited. SVB had a reputation for servicing people from underrepresented communities like hers. Its failure has reignited concerns from industry experts about lending discrimination in the banking industry and the resulting disparities in capital for people of color. Hamilton, the 43-year-old founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital, said that when it comes to entrepreneurs of color, “we’re already in the smaller house. We already have the rickety door and the thinner walls. And so, when a tornado comes by, we’re going to get hit harder.” Established in 1983, the midsize California tech lender was America’s 16th largest bank at the end of 2022 before it collapsed on March 10. SVB provided banking services to nearly half of all venture-backed technology and life-sciences companies in the United States. Hamilton, industry experts and other investors told CNN the bank was committed to fostering a community of minority entrepreneurs and provided them with both social and financial capital.
SVB regularly sponsored conferences and networking events for minority entrepreneurs, said Hamilton, and it was well known for funding the annual State of Black Venture Report spearheaded by BLK VC, a nonprofit organization that connects and empowers Black investors. “When other banks were saying no, SVB would say yes,” said Joynicole Martinez, a 25-year entrepreneur and chief advancement and innovation officer for Rising Tide Capital, a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 to connect entrepreneurs with investors and mentors. Martinez is also an official member of the Forbes Coaches Council, an invitation-only organization for business and career coaches. She said SVB was an invaluable resource for entrepreneurs of color and offered their clients discounted tech tools and research funding. Minority business owners have long faced challenges accessing capital due to discriminatory lending practices, experts say. Data from the Small Business Credit Survey, a collaboration of all 12 Federal Reserve banks, shows disparities on denial rates for bank and nonbank loans. In 2021, about 16% of Black-led companies acquired the total amount of business financing they sought from banks, compared to 35% of White-owned companies, the survey shows. “We know there’s historic, systemic, and just blatant racism that’s inherent in lending and banking. We have to start there and not tip-toe around it,” Martinez told CNN. Asya Bradley is an immigrant founder of multiple tech companies like Kinley, a financial services business aiming to help Black Americans build generational wealth. Following SVB’s collapse, Bradley said she joined a WhatsApp group of more than 1,000 immigrant business founders. Members of the group quickly mobilized to support one another, she said. Immigrant founders often don’t have Social Security numbers nor permanent addresses in the United States, Bradley said, and it was crucial to brainstorm different ways to find funding in a system that doesn’t recognize them. “The community was really special because a lot of these folks then were sharing different things that they had done to achieve success in terms of getting accounts in different places. They also were able to share different regional banks that have stood up and been like, ‘Hey, if you have accounts at SVB, we can help you guys,’” Bradley said. Many women, people of color and immigrants opt for community or regional banks like SVB, Bradley says, because they are often rejected from the “top four banks” — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank. In her case, Bradley said her gender might have been an issue when she could only open a business account at one of the “top four banks” when her brother co-signed for her. “The top four don’t want our business. The top four are rejecting us consistently. The top four do not give us the service that we deserve. And that’s why we’ve gone to community banks and regional banks such as SVB,” Bradley said. None of the top four banks provided a comment to CNN. The Financial Services Forum, an organization representing the eight largest financial institutions in the United States has said the banks have committed millions of dollars since 2020 to address economic and racial inequality. Last week, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told CNN’s Poppy Harlow that his bank has 30% of its branches in lower-income neighborhoods as part of a $30 billion commitment to Black and Brown communities across the country. Wells Fargo specifically pointed to its 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion report, which discusses the bank’s recent initiatives to reach underserved communities. The bank partnered last year with the Black Economic Alliance to initiate the Black Entrepreneur Fund — a $50 million seed, startup, and early-stage capital fund for businesses founded or led by Black and African American entrepreneurs. And since May 2021, Wells Fargo has invested in 13 Minority Depository Institutions, fulfilling its $50 million pledge to support Black-owned banks. Black-owned banks work to close the lending gap and foster economic empowerment in these traditionally excluded communities, but their numbers have been dwindling over the years, and they have far fewer assets at their disposal than the top banks. OneUnited Bank, the largest Black-owned bank in the United States, manages a little over $650 million in assets. By comparison, JPMorgan Chase manages $3.7 trillion in assets. Because of these disparities, entrepreneurs also seek funding from venture capitalists. In the early 2010s, Hamilton intended to start her own tech company — but as she searched for investors, she saw that White men control nearly all venture capital dollars. That experience led her to establish Backstage Capital, a venture capital fund that invests in new companies led by underrepresented founders. “I said, ‘Well, instead of trying to raise money for one company, let me try to raise for a venture fund that will invest in underrepresented — and now we call them underestimated — founders who are women, people of color, and LGBTQ specifically,’ because I am all three,” Hamilton told CNN. Since then, Backstage Capital has amassed a portfolio of nearly 150 different companies and has made over 120 diversity investments, according to data from Crunchbase. But Bradley, who is also an ‘angel investor’ of minority-owned businesses, said she remains “really hopeful” that community banks, regional banks and fintechs “will all stand up and say, ‘Hey, we are not going to let the good work of SVB go to waste.’” Source link Read the full article

5 New Year's Resolutions Every Entrepreneur Should Make in 2023
As you may have learned from our smash hit Webinar: Goal to Game Plan, NOW is the time to make those plans for 2023! We have our work goals and personal goals, but every good entrepreneur knows the secret is to get clear and start STRONG. 1.)
Get clear on your finances.
Any ambiguity surrounding your finances should be made crystal clear. That should be a top (if not THE top) resolution for 2023. It may not be the most invigorating way to start the year, but before tax season, take the time and hire the right experts to answer all your questions. 2.)
Understand your goals.
Your everyday actions should always be working toward your goals. Take the time to create an action plan around your goals and gain a deeper understanding of what actions you must take to achieve them. 3.)
Be more empathetic.
They say to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO. This is especially true for CEOs. To be a leader worth following, you must remember that everyone around you also has hopes and dreams, perhaps you can both help each other get there. 4.)
Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health.
Being an entrepreneur is rewarding, but it’s hard work! You must treat your body and your mind with the utmost care and understanding. This includes taking time off, nourishing yourself, exercise, and more! 5.)
Find an accountability partner.
With so many moving pieces, it can be especially easy to let yourself off the hook. It’s one of the reasons so many New Year’s resolutions fail! So, as we move into the last couple weeks of 2022, find that person who will keep you accountable while cheering you on. No one does it alone.
If you're looking for more inspiration on how to reinvent your business in 2023, look no further! Get More Info :

5 Business Trends to Expect in 2022
It was just less than two years ago when our whole world changed. No matter how different we think we are from the people we meet, the events that began in early 2020 intrinsically connect us all as the global pandemic has become a cultural touchstone and forever changed who we are as people and how we do business.
As we all shake off the debris of these tumultuous times, let’s take a look at what we can expect as we march forward into 2022.
The Gig Economy. For years employees worked long hours with a growth in income far below that of the 20th century. When the pandemic hit, businesses had varied reactions as to what to do with their employees, which left a good portion of the workforce feeling jaded and revaluating their career choices. Enter the great resignation. The Gig Economy was already on the uptick, but the pandemic really put a spotlight on the benefits of this kind of work. Meaning the economy has opened a window for companies that offer gig work opportunities, management, and support.
Going digital is no longer optional, it’s a necessity. Millennials and Gen Z combined make up over half the US population. And while Millennials in particular have less wealth than their parents, they are still an economic powerhouse for buying and influence. Both generations are digital natives, companies without websites, apps, and other ways to digitally conduct business will be left behind and in some cases be seen as illegitimate or less trust-worthy to Millennial and Gen Z buyers.
The future of events will be hybrid. While the explosion of online events initially came out of necessity, it offered an alternate experience for those who never engaged in live events. Devotees of in-person events will return to their preferred event method, while those who enjoyed the convenience of online events will expect those opportunities to continue in some form, so it’s important not to abandon online events entirely as the world continues to take steps towards reopening.

Miami Tech Week 2022
Miami, Florida is becoming one of the top technology hubs in the United States. Technology company, eMerge Americas will host Miami Tech Week as part of Miami Tech Month in 2022. The event attracts leading international business owners, creators, and investors who come together to network and gain business insights. The last in-person Tech Week event was in 2019, and the in-person convention will resume on April 18-19, 2022, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Miami Tech Week 2022 features hands-on workshops, innovation challenges, exhibits, and keynote speakers, including the year’s top presenter, tennis star Serena Williams. Other speakers include Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit. The popular online news and discussion website is ranked the seventh most-visited site in the United States. Kevin O’Leary from ABC’s Shark Tank will also give a presentation. The Shark Tank television show features famous investors looking to support startup companies whose owners give a short pitch on the show. Another featured speaker is Armando Perez, known as Pitbull, a Grammy Award-winning musical icon. Perez is also a business entrepreneur and investor and was featured at the 2019 Miami Tech Week. He specifically supports Latin American technology startup companies and is interested in biotech and finding technological solutions that can cure diseases and ailments. There are multiple other sessions throughout the day with various speakers, many of whom run successful technology companies. These talks cover a range of topics, including entrepreneurship for startup companies and young investors. This is one of the main components of the conference, as it encourages networking and discusses the marketing and branding of a range of products and services. Other sessions discuss topics related to financial technology, known as “fintech.” This type of technology aims to improve the delivery of financial services to consumers. The goal is to streamline user platforms and automate a number of services to help companies manage their operations. Sessions also cover topics such as cybersecurity, health technology, eGov, and Women in Technology. eGov is the use of information and communication technologies to provide better government services to the populace. It aims to increase constituent participation and streamline government services for businesses and users. Women in Technology (WIT) is an organization based in Virginia working to provide resources for women in the technology field. WIT is an essential aspect of the eMerge Americas event, as well as the overall technology community. Historically, women have been underrepresented in technology companies. WIT seeks to improve access to technology education for women while creating specific networking and mentoring opportunities to foster more female leadership in the technology community. The exhibit floor at the conference is fully interactive, and attendees can see new technology up close, sometimes trying devices and products for themselves. Numerous colleges and universities also have booths in the exhibit area, aiming to attract prospective students toward their respective technology programs. The expo area also features an interactive gaming lounge for attendees to network in a less formal environment. There is also a café sponsored by eMerge, where guests can relax between events. The center aisle of the exhibit hall leads to the main stage and has smaller booths as part of the Startup Showcase. This area features smaller startup companies advertising their products and services and those looking for initial investors. On the last day of the conference, eMerge Americas sponsors a private beach party at the Nautilus Hotel, located in the center of Miami Beach. The final event is open to all registered attendees and features a dance party with internationally acclaimed artist DJ Irie.
