Hello ! I've been really into Gegege no Kitarou recently, and looking at his mom made me wonder : back when kimonos were worn on a daily basis, how did pregnant people style them ? Did they wear other types of clothes that don't compress the stomach as much instead ? If you happen to have any info on this, it would be very cool :)
Hi! It's hard to imagine as many kitsuke pictures now promote perfect tubular silhouettes with not a fold out of place, but in the past kimono were worn far more loosely than they are today!
Kimono was then worn everyday (=no time for perfect polished photoshoot looks ;), many kistuke accessories we now use didn't even exist (=they were not needed!).
During Edo period to late Meiji, feminine silhouettes were far more flowy/willowy than what we have today:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kimono tended to be longer (hikizuri for ex.) and adjusted far less tighlty on the upper body (=people were working!). Depending on the period obi were narrower, or worn differently (criss crossed for ex.) or laxer than what we do today.
Pregnant women had no trouble adjusting their clothes to their changing bodies :)
The kimono was worn looser and looser as belly and boobs grew. If possible, kimono could have been unstitched and retailored (if fabric allowed it) to the bigger size needed.
Obi and ties were set above (and/or under the belly depending on time), like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And pregnancy belts were widely used.
One belt was a type of sarashi (soft cotton roll, which was also used for chest) named hara-obi 腹帯, which provided support:
youtube
Another special belt was the Iwata-obi 岩田帯, used during Obi-iwai 帯祝い, a ceremony taking place on the day of the dog during the fifth month of pregnancy. This was meant to ensure safe birth, as dogs were thought to give birth easily - hence why inu hariko are good luck charm for expecting women:
Tumblr media
The obiiwai was also a way to announce a pregnancy to the community (as miscarriages, abortions, and infanticides were sadly quite common then).
Iwata obi are still a thing, here are modern ones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, as a side note, what pregnant women could do if they felt smothered by their kimono? Well, just open the damn thing to wear it much like a robe!
Japan had not the same shaming view of female breasts than the West then. It was quite common to see some working class people in underwear/loosely dressed, or have both sex share spaces in the nude (baths for ex.).
Tbh, unless she was living a sheltered life (no work, servants, etc.), I don't see why a pregnant woman would have bothered with a properly adjusted kimono, when she could have just be much freer and comfortable xD
Hope this helps!

Costume Break Down
aka more than you ever wanted to know about Thai dance costume details but I think they are gorgeous and require so much effort to create and wear that they are worth celebrating.
Tumblr media
Let's take a look at Khem's beautiful red costume.
Here the presence of the dagger and the colour choice quite firmly indicate that he is performing the role of the hero Prince Inao from the Lakhon Nai dance drama 'The Romance of Inao.'
His costume is based on the traditional costumes worn by heroes in both Khon and Lakhon Nai. There are some historical differences between the two types but they have very much influenced each other from the 19th Century onwards.
There are some elements of his costume that read as modern influences which I suspect are to reflect both current tastes and also the fact that the costume was intended to be seen on screen rather than a stage.
Tumblr media
Here we see Khem's ornate headdress, known as a chada, he has a flower garland on the right side of his crown, which is the side that male characters always wear these flower pendants with heroines displaying them on the left.(Historically Lakhon Nai was only performed by women and was only for the eyes of the royal court although rules did relax in the 19th Century.)
It's hard to see in these pictures but he would usually be wearing the ornate wing shaped ear kaffa as well, which sit around the ears.
We can also see his very fine inthorn-tanu, which are those high pointed shoulder pads, worn by male characters to exaggerate their body shape.
Tumblr media
We can see him wearing the ornate wide collar around his neck, known as a krong-kaw and a large pendant pinned to the end of the collar against his chest.
A body chain known as sangwan is then crossed around the pendant and is usually attached to an ornamental belt or just below it, at the front and back of the costume.
Khem's sangwan is a relatively simple looking version of what can be a very intricate piece of jewellery but I suspect it is because the camera will be getting a much closer look at him than an audience looking at a stage could do.
In general I think his costume is not quite as ornate and covered with detail as a stage costume often is but there is just enough there to show the luxurious nature of dance outfits without looking too much on screen.
The above picture also gives us a great look at both his hoy-na, a silk panel that hangs at the front of the costume, (here it is red and gold with gold fringe) and his hoy-kang, the silk panels that sit either side of the central hoy-na.
We also see one very modern addition - the shiny gold buttons!
Traditionally dancers are sewn into their costumes with no visible seams, a lengthy process which does run the risk of damaging the costumes every time they are stitched and unstitched.
I suspect that Apo is still partly sewn into this outfit but I imagine they wanted to give him a top that he could get in and out of more easily as he would need to be able to change constantly for filming.
I really like the design of the top, it gives both a hint of Western influence with the shape but also has a Chinese feel with the high collar and then those beautiful very Indian looking fabrics, which feels appropriate for the era and for Man Suang itself. We see it sits over the pha-nung and hoy-na etc which would not typically be the case and is why I suspect he is not also wearing a cloth belt under it as well (mentioned below.)
Tumblr media
The red tights are also a modern addition, usually we would see bare legs and feet but they do give a very theatrical look which feels fitting for Man Suang.
Tumblr media
From this angle we can see his pha-nung, which is a long rectangular cloth that is usually pre stitched and pleated and is wrapped around the waist and drawn through the legs to be tied in a knot at the back.
Underneath that he will be wearing a pair of sanab-plao, short trousers with deep embroidered hems that sit just below the knee.
He may also be wearing pha-pawk, which is a fabric that basically functions like hip pads to assist the pha-nung in exaggerating the body shape to create an image that mimics statues and murals depicting dancers.
Usually he would be wearing a radsa-aew, a cloth belt which is stitched into place and secures the pha-nung. I can't tell just by looking at this but I suspect he may not be given the way his clothes are lying.
We can see he is wearing a lovely cloak here that appears to be silk lined velvet.
Tumblr media
Here we can see his embroidered sleeves, these are usually sewn on to an undershirt which also has padding sewn into it to exaggerate the shape of their chests. The decorative outer shirt is then usually sewn onto that undershirt.
Now in this picture, we see the fancy sleeves taper off to a plain red fabric at the shoulders which could indicate the presence of an undershirt but there is that clip in the trailer where Khem tugs his costume open and we see his bare chest so I don't know whether he is or isn't. Perhaps it depends on the necessity for him to be able to strip in any given scene which is totally fine by me!
We can also see his decorative golden vambraces and he is likely also wearing beads or a bracelet of rings as well. Usually more is more when it comes to dance jewellery but once again, I think they have been more restrained here.
Rings worn on the fingers are common and of course, anklets are essential.
Tumblr media
At least they are to me ❤️

Nahida Redesign
Tumblr media
This is actually my third redesign of Nahida (wasn't happy with the others). I put a lot of effort in her design because she is one of my favorite characters in the whole game.
First skin tone. I remember that before Natlan came out and hoyo stopped making excuses for their blatant colorism, the whole thing with Nahida being so pale was that she was partially based of Kisha fairies whose only physical characteristic I could find is that they were pale as moonlight.
On one hand the whole thing with fairies is quite cool, but (as many have said) it doesn't represent the region she's supposed to be from. So I decided to make her as pale as the moon; I gave vitiligo.
I also gave her clothes that better resemble traditional Indian fashion (where her name comes from) as well as elements from other middle eastern countries.
Her dress is supposed to be an angrakha of sorts and her cape is supposed to be like a sari(I think I kinda failed a little on that one, but it looks real nice). I also divided the cape into four parts instead of three and rounded them out to resemble bug wings (✨fairies✨). I also tried to to make her pants resemble the inside of bodhi flowers (tassels).
Since she is literally a tree branch, I gave her some tree branches. Also the flower kn her forehead is supposed to be like a bindi, since her eyes are like flowers.
I also gave her some hair coins. I couldn't find that many traditional Indian hair jewelry that wasn't tied to marriage and brides and frankly I don't want to put a child in bridal clothing.
Here's a little closeup of the coins.
Tumblr media
I also gave her an earring and henna, both are hard or impossible to see in the pose.
Tumblr media
I only did the palms and a foot for the henna.
I also tried to add some in-game symbols and flower motifs. I tried to make references to King Deshret, Nabu Malitaka and the erinites.

Indian food will introduce you to many flavors, tastes, and styles of cooking and the ingredients used are very different from other countries. As you travel across India you will have many options for trying authentic flavors without having to worry too much about the expenses, the local food is unique and often cheap. Accommodations in Indian homestays are available for people to rent out the vacations, they are close to nature and filled with hills or beaches. Homestays offer guests an authentic living experience and dining at a reasonable cost. Food served at homestays is delicious, homely, and at a nominal cost. Chaat, kachori, choli bhature, idli, dosa, and paratha. These are just some of the delicious dishes can enjoy in India from small-in-the-wall shops, dishing out regional specialties. The souvenirs in India make excellent holiday mementos, from traditional handicrafts to tasty spices, you simply need to take home a few unique souvenirs. Whether you are looking for something unique or just a simple memento of your trip, these souvenirs from India will give you a bit of inspiration when shopping. These are your choices to take and buy a souvenir to bring home. I will always be offended by fake useful elements on clothing. Drawstrings that don't cinch the waistline. Pockets that are purely decorative. Zippers just for the aesthetic. They're worse than not having the thing at all, because you get your hopes up only to discover that no, no, they just wanted to mock you.
Oh, but worse was the real pockets I found on a baby dress, because they were real hidden pockets. Flower patches that were left unstitched at the top edge so that they could be used as pockets, but look like flower patches instead of pockets. On a dress for a 3-month-old.
I don't get real pockets on half my clothing because (probably) something-something-women-carry-purses, but my 3-month-old got to have real pockets! That were disguised to not look like pockets at all? What was the point?

Hello! I keep reading fiction with kimono hemmed to fit, and I keep thinking that can't be right. I can see it if their genes mean widening shoulders, but aren't kimono folded and tucked under the obi? Thank you for looking over this detail. (I'll stay anonymous because it's an honest mistake, and I don't want specific writers to feel cornered about it)
Hi! Np for this anon ask, I'll just stress here I most often reply via Tumblr messenger so don't hesitate to ask for private answer if you need it :)
On to your question: you are right, hemming (in the Western sense of the word) a kimono is not usually done in traditional Japanese tailoring.
One of the main reasons is that fabric bolts (tanmono) are a somehow standard unit, with patterning done with kimono tailoring in mind (so motifs match between panels etc).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hemming a kimono means important parts of your kimono design will disappear! It is especially true for woman's kimono who often often display patterns on their lower skirt + sleeves.
When you wear a kimono with woman styling, the kimono is supposed to be more or less your total height to fit you size. The extra material is then tucked at the waist to form what is called the ohashori fold hold up by ties (himo). That fold gives you leeway as to which kimono you can wear as it is much more forgiving than Western clothes sizing. Being tall simply mean your ohashori will be small or non existent.
Men styling is a bit different as men don't do ohashori, which mean the kimono is tailored to their exact size (= give or take your height minus 30cm).
Kimono were usually passed to new wearers as time went, which means they are supposed to be worn by several body types. So, what about when a kimono is truly too big/small for the wearer?
Fabric was once (and still is) an expensive material so cutting it was a big no! Cutting also meant loosing the original tanmono panneling which was a terrible thing to do for any future alterations.
We so have two scenarios:
1) the wearer is a child: tucks are made at the shoulders (kata age) to reduce width, waist (koshi age) to reduce lenght, and sleeves (sode age). You can see in this past note a great example showing how a kid grew into a kimono:
Tumblr media
2) The wearer is an adult: the kimono would have been totally unsewn, and then sewn back together, hiding the extra material into seams/letting the fabric needed for bigger wearer.
Taking a kimono apart is not especially unheard of, and it is actually the traditional way to clean it (tokiarai = unstitching a kimono and washing / araihari = stretching pieces of a kimono on boards to dry after they have been washed and starched). You can see it done here:
youtube
Becky from Silk and bones has many kimono specimen photographed if you want to actually see how they are made - and just how much fabric can be hidden away into seams + how disastrous and infuriating it is to have a kimono with butchered cut fabric :(
TL:DR : People don't "hem" their kimono to wear them, women for ex. tuck the extra fabric away and go in their merry way. If sewing is needed, "hemming" is not exactly what would be done in kimono tailoring. A better way to describe it would probably be "adjusted" or "altered" to size :)

Hajj & Umrah: A Comprehensive Guide for First-Time Pilgrims
Tumblr media
Embarking on the sacred journey of Hajj or Umrah is a deeply spiritual experience for Muslims around the world. These pilgrimages to the holy city of Makkah are acts of worship that allow individuals to strengthen their connection with Allah and purify their souls. For first-time pilgrims, the journey can be both exciting and overwhelming. This comprehensive guide will help you prepare for Hajj & Umrah, offering insights into their significance, rituals, and practical tips for a smooth and fulfilling experience.
Understanding the Significance of Hajj & Umrah
Hajj
Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for every financially and physically capable Muslim to perform at least once in their lifetime. It takes place annually during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and involves specific rituals performed over a period of days. Hajj symbolizes unity, humility, and submission to Allah.
Umrah
Unlike Hajj, Umrah is a non-obligatory pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year. While it is shorter and simpler, it holds immense spiritual significance, offering Muslims the opportunity to seek forgiveness, reflect, and renew their faith.
Key Differences Between Hajj & Umrah
Timing: Hajj is performed during specific days in Dhu al-Hijjah, whereas Umrah can be undertaken at any time of the year.
Obligation: Hajj is mandatory for all eligible Muslims, while Umrah is a voluntary act of worship.
Rituals: Hajj includes several rituals over multiple days, such as standing at Arafat and participating in the symbolic stoning of the devil. Umrah involves fewer steps, primarily Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah).
Steps to Prepare for Hajj & Umrah
1. Strengthen Your Intention (Niyyah)
The journey begins with a sincere intention to perform Hajj or Umrah solely for the sake of Allah. Reflect on the spiritual significance of this act and prepare yourself mentally and emotionally.
2. Educate Yourself
Learn about the rituals and significance of Hajj & Umrah to ensure you perform them correctly. Familiarize yourself with the steps involved, such as Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and the importance of prayer and supplication during the pilgrimage.
3. Check Your Eligibility
Ensure you meet the physical, financial, and spiritual requirements for Hajj or Umrah. If necessary, seek advice from your local mosque or a knowledgeable individual.
4. Obtain Necessary Documentation
A valid passport and visa are essential for traveling to Makkah.
Ensure all vaccinations required by the Saudi government are up to date.
5. Plan Your Journey
Book flights and accommodation early to secure the best options.
Choose lodging close to the Haram (Sacred Mosque) for convenience.
Packing Essentials for Hajj & Umrah
Prepare a checklist to ensure you pack all necessary items for your pilgrimage. Some essentials include:
Ihram Clothing: For men, two white unstitched garments; for women, modest and comfortable clothing that adheres to Islamic guidelines.
Comfortable Footwear: Lightweight and breathable shoes for walking long distances.
Toiletries: Unscented soap, shampoo, and other essentials to maintain Ihram purity.
Prayer Items: A portable prayer mat and a small Quran.
Travel Documents: Keep copies of your passport, visa, and identification handy.
Rituals of Hajj & Umrah
Ihram: Entering the state of Ihram involves wearing specific clothing and reciting the intention for Hajj or Umrah. This signifies spiritual purification and equality among pilgrims.
Tawaf: Circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction while making supplications.
Sa’i: Walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, commemorating Hajar’s search for water for her son, Ismail.
Additional Hajj Rituals: For Hajj, pilgrims also stand at Arafat, participate in Muzdalifah’s prayer, and perform the symbolic stoning at Mina.
Tips for First-Time Pilgrims
Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle and drink frequently to avoid dehydration, especially in the hot climate.
Follow Health Guidelines: Rest when needed and avoid overcrowded areas to stay healthy.
Focus on Worship: Minimize distractions and dedicate your time to prayer, supplication, and reflection.
Be Patient: The journey can be physically and emotionally challenging. Practice patience and trust in Allah throughout the process.
Conclusion
Hajj & Umrah are profound spiritual journeys that leave a lasting impact on the lives of Muslims. For first-time pilgrims, proper preparation and understanding of the rituals are essential to ensure a fulfilling experience. By following this guide, you can embark on your pilgrimage with confidence, allowing you to focus on deepening your connection with Allah and achieving inner peace.

Cultural Etiquette to Observe During Your Umrah Journey
Tumblr media
Embarking on the sacred journey of Umrah is a profound and transformative experience that connects you with your faith and allows for deep spiritual reflection. Whether you’re traveling  from Dubai or Sharjah, the journey to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina requires not just physical preparation but also an understanding of the cultural etiquette that ensures your pilgrimage is respectful, fulfilling, and harmonious.
At GV Travel and Tourism LLC, we understand that Umrah is not merely a trip but a significant spiritual endeavor. Our Umrah Package from Dubai and Sharjah is designed to make your pilgrimage as seamless and spiritually enriching as possible, but also to ensure you’re equipped with the knowledge to conduct yourself with respect and mindfulness throughout your journey.
Here’s a guide on the cultural etiquette to observe during your Umrah journey.
Approach the Kaaba with reverence and humility.
As you approach the holy  Kaaba, you must do so with humility and respect. Stroll, in reverence for the sacredness of this holy site, and without pride or arrogance. This is a place of deep spiritual significance for Muslims around the world, and your conduct should reflect that understanding. Disruptive behavior, whether in the form of noise or haste, can disturb the sanctity of the experience, so approach it with a calm and focused heart.
Adhere to the dress code.
Dress modestly and in line with the prescribed attire for Umrah. Men must wear the Ihram—two white, unstitched pieces of cloth—symbolizing purity and humility. Women, on the other hand, should wear loose-fitting, non-sheer clothes that cover their entire body. The purpose of this dress code is to strip away social distinctions and make every pilgrim equal in the eyes of Allah. By adhering to this dress code, you show your respect for the pilgrimage and its sacred purpose.
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
Keeping yourself and your environment clean is not only a matter of respect for others but also an important part of the pilgrimage. In Mecca and Medina, where the crowd can be large, maintaining cleanliness can be a challenge, but it is essential. Remember to wash your hands frequently, use washrooms properly, and keep your belongings tidy. It’s also important to be conscious of your hygiene throughout the journey, especially in a climate where physical exertion can lead to discomfort.
Respect the Crowd and Others Around You
One of the most important aspects of Umrah is the sense of community. You will be surrounded by fellow pilgrims from around the world, all seeking to draw closer to Allah. During Tawaf (circling the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah), be patient, avoid rushing, and respect others’ space. In crowded places, it’s important to remain calm, respectful, and tolerant, ensuring that your actions do not disrupt the spiritual experience of others.
Observe Proper Manners and Etiquette
As a Tour Operator & Travel Agency in Dubai, GV Travel and Tourism LLC always stresses the importance of maintaining proper etiquette when interacting with fellow pilgrims and the locals. Refrain from noisy talking, quarrels, or any behavior that may disturb the peace of the pilgrimage. During the rituals, focus on your prayers and spiritual connection with Allah, avoiding distractions such as loud conversations or unnecessary movements. Your conduct should reflect the respect you have for this sacred time.
Respect the Rituals of Tawaf and Sa’i
The rituals of Tawaf and Sa’i hold deep historical and spiritual meaning. Tawaf, the act of circling the Kaaba seven times, is a powerful spiritual experience, and Sa’i—the walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah—commemorates the actions of Hagar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH). Both rituals should be performed with reverence and humility. Avoid engaging in acts such as throwing stones, wilful destruction, or careless talking during these rituals, as they detract from the sanctity of the experience.
Adhere to the Customs and Culture of Saudi Arabia
As guests in Saudi Arabia, it is essential to respect the customs and etiquette of the host country. Being mindful of local traditions, cultural norms, and religious practices will ensure that your pilgrimage is not only smooth but also respectful. Aware of the unique cultural practices, from how to greet people to the proper way to behave in religious settings, will enrich your overall Umrah experience.
Stay Hydrated and Be Mindful of Health
Given the physically demanding nature of Umrah—long walks, crowded areas, and intense heat—staying hydrated and maintaining your health is crucial. Drink plenty of water, rest when you feel fatigued, and avoid overexerting yourself. In this sacred journey, it’s essential to remain in good health, both physically and spiritually. By taking care of your body, you ensure that you can fully engage in the pilgrimage’s spiritual benefits.
Reflect and Be Grateful
As you approach the end of your Umrah journey, take the time to reflect on the blessings you’ve received. Give thanks to Allah for granting you the opportunity to perform Umrah and for the spiritual lessons you have learned. The end of the pilgrimage should not be a moment of complacency but an opportunity to renew your faith and commitment to Allah. Continue your journey with gratitude and mindfulness, carrying the lessons from Umrah into your everyday life.
Avoid Arguments and Disputes
Umrah is a time for reflection, worship, and spiritual growth, and it should be free from conflict. Avoid any disputes or arguments with fellow pilgrims. Maintain a friendly demeanor, be patient with one another, and keep the atmosphere peaceful. This will contribute to a harmonious pilgrimage experience for everyone involved.
Conclusion
At GV Travel and Tourism LLC, we believe that your Umrah journey should be more than just a trip. It should be a spiritually transformative experience that draws you closer to Allah.
