Kitty jesus, he believes in starclan which is the kitty version of heaven/god and yea. All the warrior cats characters except those outside the clans or those that are atheist believe in the kitty heaven and would irl be bri-ish and christian as hell so. The authors are all older british christian women and so the way starclan is written is like undoubtedly that.

The main religion in the series is extremely catholic coded. Most clan cats believe in Starclan and the Dark Forest(or heaven and hell). There is a set of rule they must uphold and follow, where following them leads to heaven and breaking them leads to hell. Their religious leaders are sworn to celibacy, and the punishments that "code breakers"(or cats who break the rules) face are extremely similar to situations people with religious trauma have gone through.

Butch Wolverine

I just watched X-Men (2000) for the first time and yes, the X-Men are inherently queer coded obviously but there’s just something so butch about drifting through life, hated by everyone who finds out what you are—and, in a lot of ways, seemingly just on instinct—and the thing is you also don’t understand why despite objectively knowing that what you are is something just about universally hated, because you’ve become so detached from your past that whoever you were before this societal pariah might not even be yours to claim anymore—nobody you knew then has even tried to find you.

Then to, even drifting and alone, to come across a teenage girl who’s the same as you and, despite how inviting people in has never worked before, you can’t just leave her to freeze so you let her in your car and you feed her your food and you try your best to protect her from the threats coming at you to the point where she almost gets you killed and you don’t even blame her, you just immediately worry for her when she’s gone and you go after her and you know her so well, despite it only being a few days, that you manage to get to her first even though everyone else is also looking, just to try and convince her to come back to where it’s safe and she can be herself like you never got to even though you yourself still don’t feel that way here.

And when people target her before you the horror is immediate and the reaction is also immediate to try to protect her, and you’ve just met her a couple of days ago and she almost killed you and some of the bad people after you have only hurt you because of her but you don’t even care! You just want to save her, like you were never saved!

It’s vaguely girl dad but it’s SO CLEARLY not at the same time. There’s too much of a specific “I relate to this teenage girl, I am this teenage girl” for that.

Some of both, I think, because I love them both so much.  Speaking of which, I’m rereading the X-Men comics I own starting with the very first issue in the 60′s, with the overdramatic dialogue and the ridiculous costumes, and...I love them...so much.  For this headcanon meme!

HeadcanonLaura! Is! Trans!  Good talk!

For Logan, I still really truly believe that he and Steve Rogers ran in similar circles for a minute or twenty in WWII, because quite frankly if one super soldier is good, one super soldier and one dude with an upsetting talent for taking a bullet and walking it off is better.  Steve remembers Logan much better than Logan remembers Steve, because Logan’s working with a fair amount of memory loss just purely because, yeah, he can take a bullet to the brain and get back up, but memory storage is a delicate business and repairing the neural paths doesn’t necessarily repair the memories.  The two of them get drinks sometimes regardless.

HeartcanonLaura and Logan are both Highly Paranoid (with good reasons) and therefore people tend to expect them to radiate enough unease to make animals nervous.  They are Deeply Wrong.  Laura, at first, tends to be more afraid of animals than they are of her, relic of a long history of any and all new creatures being basically a gladiatorial fight to the death, but she comes around pretty quickly when Logan shows her how to entice a stray cat toward her.  As soon as Laura calms down the pair of them are always the most popular kids at the dance when it comes to domestic animals (with the exception of horses, which are anxious enough to need some soothing first) and one time Laura wandered out of the woods behind the manor with a real-ass fox in her arms.  

“You’re a Disney princess,” Kitty gasps, thrilled.

“I am not,” Laura snaps, blushing, and puts the fox down.  It does not leave.  As far as it’s concerned it’s found the universe’s friendliest apex predator and it’s pretty sure that following her around is going to get it enough food to turn it into a fox-colored sphere.

Gutcanon...the HYDRA cell that cloned Laura included a neurobiologist who used to work for the Red Room, and as such Laura has command coding modeled off the Winter Soldier and the Black Widow program deeply laced into her brain.  They learn this in the worst possible way (of course) and the ensuing fight to keep her contained nearly kills even Logan.  When she comes back to herself, she’s covered in his blood and Logan is still standing between her and the rest of the X-Men, because he knows from bitter experience that coming out of a haze and finding you’ve killed someone you love is the worst experience in the world.

See, the Weapon X program, when it experimented on Logan, was well equipped mechanically but underprepared for the delicate process of brainwashing.  Their first attempt crossed wires badly with Logan’s mutation, and accidental (or intentional) activation of the programming would send him into berserker rages, and...yeah.  He’s not letting that happen to Laura.  A lot of bad shit’s happened to her because of him, including this, but he’s pretty sure she’ll come out of it before she actually kills him for good, so he takes the punishment and does.  Not.  Move.

JunkcanonHey listen, I know Kitty/Illyana is, like, The Thing, but: Illyana/Laura?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Just me?  They would be a narratively perfect match, and also I would LOVE the parallel of Sweet Smiling Sunshine Illyana Who Is Also Belasco’s Heir and Grumpy Scowly Swear-y Laura Who Is Lowkey On A Righteous Crusade.  Tall Illyana in her high femme armor with a bigass sword and short Laura with her hair up in a ponytail and the blood of her enemies on her highly practical uniform.  Laura’s mutation and training mean she’s strong enough to carry her girlfriend bridal style even though Illyana is extremely Colossus’ sister and like a good solid seven inches taller than Laura’s 5′4″.  Illyana is enthralled with this fact.  One time Laura saw Illyana throw her sword like a javelin in a training session and instantly got clobbered by a mock Sentinel while she was staring.  It was totally worth it because Illyana spent the next hour fretting over Laura, healing factor notwithstanding.

Illyana had more of a childhood than Laura did (although not THAT much more) and teaches her dumb stuff like clapping games and jumprope, and one of the languages Laura learned in the lab was Russian and she falls in love with the language like she’s never done before when she hears Illyana telling bad jokes in it.

It takes Illyana a little while to get over her hopeless crush on Kitty, and it takes Laura even longer to figure out what the fuck pining even is, let alone that she’s been doing it, and then they’re sweet and clumsy and earnest together while Logan and Colossus kind of eye each other dubiously over their heads.

Come the fuck on, guys, this is a great concept.  This is, like, the Sweetest Ship.

God, catch me getting feelings about an AU where Laura is an angel and Illyana is a demon even though I’ve never read a single Magyk comic.

SpleencanonCanon can frankly suck an entire dick, especially on the subject of their perennial Death Of Wolverine nonsense.  Like, listen up?  Bitch?  You can have an immortal character.  It’s okay.  You can do that.  I understand that you feel like you need to keep doing the death thing because it’s “emotionally poignant” or whatever, but fucking COUNTER-PROPOSAL: you have a bunch of potentially immortal characters, which, understandably, you milk for a lot of angst.  That’s okay, I like mortals-and-immortals angst, but you need to stop fucking killing Wolverine because it’s nonsensical and annoying and never sticks, so what you’re going to do instead is have Wolverine start a whole fucking daisy-chain of immortal found family narratives.  Just have Logan adopt all of them.  Literally every single immortal character who isn’t actively out to do a genocide is Logan’s child now.  

Laura?  Yep.  

Illyana?  That’s his baby girl.  

Thor?  Thor needs a strong father figure in his life and Odin ain’t always top notch.  

Silver Surfer?  Norrin is a sad and shiny boy who could probably stand to have a parent around so he stops making so many bad fucking decisions.  

Elixir?  You KNOW Logan’s already on his game there.  

Steve Rogers?  Depending on your canon homeboy could live a long fucking time with that serum, and as we’ve discussed Logan was already Full Dad Mode in WWII, it’s just the status quo.

And like, Logan doesn’t need to keep all his new kids at home with him, most of them are grown folk, they’re adults, they can take care of themselves, but what I’m going to need is an ever-growing network of semi-to-fully-immortal characters who know that they can call up Wolverine when their girlfriend or their children or whoever lives out a long mortal life and dies of old age.

Meet Rory Panagotopulos, Creator of Thrashin’ USA

Rory Panagotopulos is a Boston native with a Venice Beach soul, whose lifelong love of skateboarding inspired his short “Thrashin’ USA” our 11th Go! Cartoon. When he’s not animating the crowd-pleasing interstitials of MTV shows like Girl Code, Rory is hanging out with his dog Bosco or creating skate-related content such as gifs of the Gundam robots catching phat air—quality content accessible on his Instagram. I caught up with Rory to talk sketch comedy, bad 80s action sports movies, and turning your childhood neighbors into over-the-top cartoon villains.

How did you start animating?

I always wanted to do art—funny art, if possible. I knew I wanted to animate but didn’t really know where to start. The first things I made were claymations In high school—my aunt and uncle were getting rid of their giant 80s VHS camcorder, so I used that and just hit ‘record’ and ‘stop’ really fast.

An illustrious beginning. Where’d that take you?

I went to college for Computer Science. It was back when the belief was that everything was going to be 3D animated from then on. So I started getting into 3D animation, and found that it wasn’t for me. I’ve always loved drawing and making characters, and I was got lost in all the technicality of 3D. So I started focusing on art in college instead, and realized I could easily use a computer to make 2D animations.

Wait, so… you became a Computer Science major just to do 3D animation?

Yeeeaah. I was so mystified by animation that I was like, “3D animation is done on computers right, so Computer Science major it is.” 

Oh man.

It culminated with me and my friend sort of tricking our advisors into letting us make a movie our senior year. He was a film major and I was like an Art major, Comp. Sci. minor at that point. Our movie had 3D animations that I did the full animating on - way too much for one person, so it didn’t look great - but it was an animated movie.

That’s cool. Did you submit it to festivals?

Ohhh, yeah, noo, it wasn’t a fit for festivals. But we did meet people from MTV because of it. Randomly, a dude at MTVU reached out to us after seeing it. And oddly enough, the same person I first met at MTV, 10 years later, is the person I work with now at MTV.  

What do you do for MTV now?

Technically the gig is with the independent production company that the executive producer of the shows I work on created. But I make the little explanatory animations for the show Girl Code.

Neat! So did you go straight into freelance animating after school?

Actually, no. Me and the friend I made the film with moved to New York and started doing comedy stuff at Upright Citizen’s Brigade. Just to make stuff, we’d make YouTube videos and would put animation in them.

Comedy stuff! Was that acting, writing, stand-up?

Sketch shows, which we did for about 5 years. They have house teams at UCB, so every month we’d host a different sketch show—it was great training for writing. And we did a few big shows, like one called “Dog Fleet”. It was like a live on-stage Saturday-morning Cartoon parody. Sort of like a Ninja Turtles toss-up, but with dogs.

Actual dogs onstage?

Oh, no, that would’ve been bad, ha—just people. People with very rudimentary dog ears on their heads. And they were obsessed with beans instead of pizza.

Ah, gotcha. So this comedy stuff, it couldn’t have been paying the bills?

Not quite! I was working at a book publisher, Simon and Schuster, doing the #1 most boring job in the arts. I’d go through editor’s corrections for books and make sure they didn’t mess up the page layout too much. So scrolling through books all day adding commas.

And then you’d let out all that steam with the comedy at night?

Pretty much! I liked that job because it ended at 5pm, and I wouldn’t think about it again until the next morning. Lived that double lifestyle for a while. Then the guy I met at MTV started doing Girl Code, and reached out to me and was like, “Oh, do you still do animation?”. At first I was like, “No”.

Ha! Shut down.

I wasn’t exactly like “No” but I was like, “Oh, I dunno, this comedy thing is pretty cool.” But I eventually got too bored of the other job. So I reached out to him and was like, “Hey, are you still doing that?” And he was like “Actually no, I’m not.” But he graciously introduced me to the new person who was running the show. So that’s how that gig started.

Did you dream of making a cartoon as a kid?

Definitely, I was obsessed with cartoons. We didn’t have cable until I was like 12, so any time a cartoons came on TV, I was watching it. It was basically Ninja Turtles and all the action 80s and 90s cartoons like GI Joe and Centurions. And I was totally obsessed with the X-Men cartoon, which I actually re-watched recently and found to have the most insane complicated plot of any cartoon. I definitely didn’t understand what was going on when I was a kid. I guess I was just like “Oh my God! Wolverine!”

So what do you work on in your own time?

The awesome thing about doing freelance is I can take a full month here and there to work on personal stuff. I did an animated web series a couple years ago called “Garbage Time”. It’s about two kids sitting on the bench for a basketball team, something I did a lot of my freshman year of high school. I did everything for it: writing, casting, recording, animating. I learned why so many people work on animated projects—it’s a lot to make. If I’m more busy, I make wacky photoshops that I usually share on Twitter.

So did you come to pitch to Go! Cartoons?

I knew of Frederator through Adventure Time or Fairly OddParents. I don’t know what landed me on the website... again with the theme of me not knowing what I’m doing. But I saw the Go! Cartoons program, and was like, “Oh, I definitely want to do this”. “Dog Fleet” was originally going to be my cartoon pitch, but my friend wanted to do it as a sketch show, so that’s how that went.

But I still wanted to make a cartoon, so I came up with two new pitches. My girlfriend and I were coming out to LA for a wedding, so I scheduled my pitch for then, and figured if I’m going all the way out there, I’ll wow them with two - not just one - pitches. In hindsight, neither was good. Eric (our VP Development) gave me great notes and a quick class on pitching, and I took his advice home, came up with and boarded “Thrashin’ USA”, and did a better pitch over Skype.

What was the advice you were given on pitching?

Well, because the shorts are only 5 minutes, character is key. You have to get a very good, likable character out to the audience as quickly as possible. And then you also want the story to be simple and to the point. The ones I’d pitched before, nothing really happened. They were kind of like mumblecore. So when I went back I tried to make a very tight story where actions happened in sequence, and you get to know a character, and you actually feel good at the end.

What inspired “Thrashin’ USA”?

I loved skateboarding in high school and college. I was terrible at it, but I’ve always loved it, and skate culture in general. And it was on my mind at the time because my nephew was turning 5 and wanted a skateboard for his birthday. I was like: #1, it’s crazy that you’re 5 and you want a skateboard; and #2, I was remembering how when you’re a kid, it’s so hard to get anything. So I thought about a kid trying to get a skateboard or get his skateboard back, and that’s where that idea originated.

Also, my neighbor growing up was named Mrs. Tracy. And before I had a board, they always had this old 70s banana board in the back of their garage that I would just see. I’d always think, “Oh man… I just want to get that board.”

Were you guys friendly... was she evil? Is she gonna see your short?!

I think she was a very nice woman - definitely not evil. We were always like, losing balls in her backyard, so I think she was more annoyed with us than anything. The way my dad is… I’m sure he’ll see her on the street and try to explain it to her and she’ll be like, “Okay.”

Who were the inspirations for Pau and Gabby?

Pau basically looks a lot like my nephew, so that’s true to life. With Gabby, I wanted there to be a cool skater girl, and to avoid any kind of ‘damsel in distress’ trope. She’s as good a skateboarder, if not better than Pau.

Did you know any cool skater girls growing up?

Not really. Mostly because me and my one friend in high school who also skateboarded were too bad to go to skateparks or anything. But I think some of the reason behind that was that back then, and still now, skateboarding has an annoying "boys club" vibe. I think part of my intention with Gabby’s character was to raise the representation, in a small way, of skateboarding being a cool thing for girls to do. I’d rather paint a picture of skateboarding that’s more open to everyone.

Well you know one now! Not sure I count as “cool” though. Do you still skateboard?

Nah; the last time I did was back when I was still doing sketch comedy. I was using a skateboard as a prop in a show, so I skateboarded 5 or 6 blocks from the train to the theater, and my knees hurt so much afterward that I was like, “Ok, well, that was fun while it lasted.”

Where you grew up, was skateboarding a big part of the culture?

I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, and definitely not. The things kids liked were baseball and hockey. I watched a lot of TV shows as a kid about skateboarding and California and it always seemed like this awesome fantasy world where everybody skateboarded. Really I only had one or two friends who also skateboarded. But it was this cool thing where we were from a place people wouldn’t skateboard, but we were doing it anyway. And being from Massachusetts, we had to have a chip on our shoulders because it’s cold all the time. So it was this point of pride like, “Yeah, let’s go skate even though it’s freezing.”

Do you know what you’d do with a Thrashin’ USA series?

Well I’ve drawn a lot from the bad skateboarding movies that were made in the 80s and 90s. There’s one called Thrashin’ that is definitely my favorite of them; it’s basically Romeo and Juliet set against a downhill skateboarding race. There’s a rollerblading one called Airborne. And they make no sense. They’re supposed to take place in the normal world, but it’s all over-the-top and skateboarding is the most important thing in the world for everybody. And I was like, these could be good, if the conceit was that this is a fantasy world where skateboarding is super important and everyone cares about skateboarding, cause that’s just not reality. So that’s the idea: to build that kind of world and treat it as a fantasy.

Have you thought about Pau and Gabby’s arcs?

Well I imagine that this world would have levels of competitions. So I see them both entering the town competition, then regional, state, and all the way up to universal competitions. And it’d become a dynamic where they’re working out whether they have feelings for each other, and whether those will be affected by the fact that they’re both very focused on skateboarding and trying to be the best in the world at it.

Would Mrs. Tracy remain a primary antagonist?

Yeah, I like her as an antagonist because one of the goofiest things about those 80s skateboarding movies is how ridiculous the villains are. It’s (dramatic voice) parents, teachers, COPS. You know, people who are generally just trying their best but because they’re enemies of skateboarding, they’re public enemy #1 in this world. So I like the heightening of strict teachers, crazy neighbors—Mrs. Tracy just trying to get vengeance for her azaleas.

What are your biggest influences and favorite cartoons?

For “Thrashin’ USA” specifically, the title comes from the song “Thrashin’ USA” by The Bones Brigade, that actually took their name from a skateboarding crew from the 80s—so doubly ripping off. They were like a thrash metal band I was really into in college that did a lot of songs about skateboarding and eating junk food.

Some of my favorite movies of all time are the Bill and Ted duology. I think it’s had a big influence on my humor and ideas. I’m a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky’s stuff - definitely Samurai Jack, but I feel like his Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon gets overlooked. That was my favorite cartoon for a while. One of my favorite animated movies ever is called Interstella 5555. It’s basically a Daft Punk album that they made an anime over, and the story is of a super popular alien pop group getting corporatized by an Earth record company. I also really liked Daria and Beavis and Butthead. When Adult Swim and Toonami became a thing, I was all about that. 

And what are you working on now, as personal projects?

Well I was inspired by the whole Go! Cartoons process, so I’ve just been like, coming up with a lot of pitches and character ideas. One that I’m working on now is about a BMX bike gang—sort of like Daria crossed with Akira.

I'm dreaming of mom again. It's the same dream over and over again. It's always the same dream. She’s always reaching for me and as I reach for her, I can see her screaming, but I never hear it. I watch her skin and muscle melt away from her body until all I can see is half of her face masked in horror and her bony fingers reaching for me. I see the mushroom cloud go off in the distance and can feel the heat of the shock wave on my face. At first, it feels like the Sun and then it starts to boil my skin until blisters form. That isn’t possible for me now that I know that I can’t be harmed by the radiation, only fueled by it.

I don’t know what kinds of things I might be able to do.  I know that one of the effects of the Radiation on those of us positively affected by it, is an unnaturally long life. It will take us a lot longer to die. Our life span is practically doubled and we don’t really get old. We age, but we don’t show it. Some of us have more mental abilities and some of us have physical abilities. There is extra strength, heightened senses on grand scale. Things like hearing farther than normal humans can, being able to lift a phenomenal amount. We never get sick, we never age, but we can die. 

This girl I grew up with, Charlotte, found out she was a Nukie and lost her damn mind. She had telekinesis and it was heavily connected to her mood. As you can imagine, she was freaking out knowing that she was one of us and this made her telekinesis go haywire. She started throwing everything around her, including people. A lot of people got hurt and she moved a heavy machine that got slammed into her little brother who died from the impact. The only way to get her to stop was to knock her out which the Feds did. They took her away and no one has ever seen her again. Her poor family was left to pick up the pieces, losing both of their children. Her dad committed suicide a week later and her mom got really sick and eventually passed away a few months after that. It’s what Nukies like us risk to lose. It’s important to stay very calm until you can get a reign on whatever ability it is that you have. 

I think about all of this as I go to work. I’m hoping to find something that will help me figure myself out. They’ve been running all sorts of tests on various Nukies. They tend to leave those of us that are Nukies and Engineers alone, seeing as how they need us. So, they test on other Nukies instead. Mainly, we test out their powers in a safe, controlled environment, draw their blood and try to replicate whatever genetic mutations caused from the radiation exposure on Non-Nukies. Nothing has worked so far. We can’t create Nukies. Therefor, we can’t un-create Nukies. So, there’s a strong chance I’ll be like this forever. 

There’s a girl I work with, Bria. I knew her back in college. We had a lot of the same classes together and we’ve become good friends over the past few years. Especially since the War. We got assigned to the same team, so we see each other everyday. Bria isn’t afraid of me. Rather, she finds me interesting and loves to annoy the shit out of me every single day by asking me if I’ve figured out what my abilities are yet.  I walked in today, clomping into the lab in my Doc Martens and Bria, as usual, excitedly jumps up from her stool to dash over to me and yet again, annoy the shit out of me. 

“Anything?!” she asks in an excited whisper as if everyone where we worked didn’t know that I was a Nukie. 

I sigh exasperatedly.

“No, Bria.” 

I walk over to my stool and sit down, careful not to tip it over as I lean forward and look through some paperwork. I can feel Bria’s eyes on my face as I attempt to read. I give up and lay the papers down, turning to face her. As I expected, her eyes are alight with excitement and her lithe body looks like she’s ready to spring on me. I eye her warily and take the bait, 

“What?” I ask. 

“ You didn’t hear?” she asks, excitement still present in her voice.

“If I’d heard anything worth warranting excitement, I wouldn’t be asking would I?” I say, annoyance in my voice.

It sails completely over Bria’s head or maybe she just ignored it.

“ They found something.” she says, trying to keep her voice down to a whisper.

“What do you mean they FOUND something?” I ask. 

Could she be talking about the Feds? Did they finally “crack” the code to us Nukies?

Bria looks around nervously and gets a little closer to me which is beginning to make me a little uncomfortable. I’ve seen Bria excited, but never like this. 

“They tested a girl yesterday and Raheed was checking her blood when he found something. We did the necessary tests and....” Bria said, trailing off. She glanced around nervously. I looked around too and everyone was focusing on the task in front of them. I wondered why she was so nervous. 

“ And?” I asked.

“ It worked.” she said, letting out a breath as if she’d been carrying a stack of concrete blocks.

My face must have betrayed how surprised I was.

“ What?!” I said in a rather loud whisper which garnished some looks from our colleagues. 

“Shhh. Keep your voice down. Not everyone in the lab knows.” Bria said leaning in close to me.

“What? Why?” I asked. Why would it be a big secret anyway? Isn’t this what we’d been working towards for months anyway?

“ I don’t know. But...be careful. I don’t know what this could mean. They may try and experiment on you next. And, you’re my friend. I don’t want to lose you.” Bria said, tears in her eyes.

I laughed and reassured her, “Bria, I’ll be fine. I’m sure they won’t. Besides, they need me don’t they?” 

“ Well, yes and no. Now that they know they can do it with the teams they have, what’s not to say they won’t just forego their no-touch rule and go after you next? I mean, it’s feasible.” she said worriedly. 

“Bria. I think you’re being paranoid.” I said and turned back to my paperwork.

She was right. What was to keep them from coming for me next? I wasn’t going to be some god damn lab rat for these people. And, I enjoy being a Nukie. It keeps me safe in a lot of ways. It seems to me that the only real danger in this new world are the damn humans. I mean, I still consider myself human, but a lot of people would say I’m a mutant or a monster. Nukie is a kind term and Meta-Human is what the scientists call us. They say we’re the next step in the evolutionary change. They want to understand why people like me are so special that we get to have the privilege that comes with being a Meta-Human. Everyone wants to be the cool kid on the block. It’s not exactly like I asked for this, but I’m not exactly complaining either. 

I feel like an X-Man everyday. I’m just thankful I’m not Rogue. It would seriously suck to have to wear gloves everyday of my life. Wolverine doesn’t seem like a great character in terms of if I had to choose to be him. Being Storm would be pointless underground, although, she is pretty bad-ass. Jean Grey was pretty cool, but she had a lot of issues with her powers. Cyclops, I’ll pass on that one. Gambit was...interesting. Nightcrawler was pretty cool. I don’t know. I think about this often. I get to be my own X-Man. Hey, maybe I can grab a bunch of meta-nerds like me and form my very own X-Men group in real life. How could would that be?

My mind tends to wander and jump from thought to thought. I kind of can’t help it. I was so stuck in my thoughts that I didn’t realize how quiet everything had gotten around me. I look back up and everything around me is different. People aren’t moving at all and the room is no longer bright and mostly white. It’s a stormy gray and there’s a mist that’s sort of snaking around everything like I’m walking in a countryside in a zombie movie or something. I carefully get up from my stool and I wave my hand in front of Bria who is staring in my general direction. Her body stays the same. Her eyes don’t move at all. Freaky.

I can hear this low humming sound and a faint sound of what sounds like whale song? What the hell? The room is suddenly very cold and I wrap my lab jacket around me even more. I take my goggles off and put them down on the table in front of me. Is everyone frozen in time? Is this Me? It has to be Me doing this. This has never happened before. I leave the lab and dash as quickly as I can to the experiment room. This room requires a certain level of clearance that I don’t really have. I’m on the lower end of what I’m allowed to do, see and participate in. If ever I wanted the full answers to what they do to people like me, now’s the time. I’m not sure how long this will last, so I’m really praying to every God that exists that it stays this way long enough for me to snoop and get back to my desk like nothing ever happened.

I remember watching a bunch of sci-fi movies when I was a kid. I loved watching all of the old stuff. The Twilight Zone was my favorite. I remember thinking about all of the possibilities of the world and wondering if any of those things are possible. Now that I’m older, I still think it’s all very possible. I had always wanted a different life. I used to beg for anything other than the mundane. Well, I got it. There was a war and multiple nuclear bombs were dropped. Everyone wanted so badly to win that they stopped caring about who they were fighting for. In the end, no one won. I guess, maybe we did. If this had never happened, I would never know what I could be capable of, what I could become. I feel like I’m in a sci-fi novel. If you think about it, I am. Dystopian future, protagonist with a heart-wrenching backstory. I think about this as I make my way down the multiple hallways I’ve walked so many times. I stand outside the door that’s heavily guarded. There are 4 SWAT officers that are heavily armed and quite intimidating. This is my chance.

I slip past them and go through the doors to see multiple scientists frozen in various poses around the room while they do different things. In the center of the room is the president of our branch staring at a man that is naked and suspended in clear fluid with various tubes hooked up to his body. Walking around the man, I see that his eyes are open. I gasp because I notice that the color of his irises are similar to mine. I’ve never seen anyone else with eyes like mine. I don’t have any siblings, so I know we can’t be siblings. He looks about my age and is well-built. I avert my eyes and try very hard not to look down, even though I want to. The last time I had a boyfriend was in college before the war. He didn’t make it. There hasn’t been anyone since. 

So this is what they’re working on back here. I walk around the room, eyeing everyone cautiously and read over some of the various paperwork that I see. It seems like they’ve been working on him his whole life. He’s a year younger than me and he’s an orphan. They took him from one of the bunkers and have kept him here ever since.  His name is Project number 12. They couldn’t even give him a fucking name? This is cruel. I wonder what they’re doing to him. I’m assuming they’re experimenting on him, but I wonder what for.  Is he like me? He must be to have my eyes. I wonder if he has this ability too. I press my hand to the glass. I feel this connection with him now. 

I don’t know how much time I have. I’m lucky as all get out that I’ve had this long without getting caught. I turn to head out of the room and look back one last time. His eyes meet mine and I let out a gasp. Is he...awake? I back away and run down the halls to my stool and compose myself. When my breathe finally evens out, the world swims back into focus. Noise fills my ears and I can hear the on-goings of the lab. No one even noticed I was gone. So, I can control how long I freeze time after-all. I look around and everything is bright, white and clear again. What was with that weird mist anyway? 

Bria comes over to me and scares the shit out of me when she whispers, “Boo.”

“Shit, Bria! Why would you do that?” I say.

Bria looks surprised and steps back.

“Woah, you okay? I didn’t mean to scare you.” Bria says. 

“I’m fine. Just...tired.” I say, putting my pen down and rubbing my eyes with one hand.

“Are you having the nightmares again?” Bria asks. 

“Yeah.” I say, looking up at her.

“ I’m sorry Rory.” Bria says, putting a hand on my shoulder. 

I lay my hand over her hand.

“Thanks Bri. I appreciate it.” I say.

“You should go home. It’s not like they’ll notice if you aren’t here. There’s only like a thousand of us. What’s one day anyway?” Bria says.

“Yeah, maybe I will.” I say.

I work for another hour and decide to go home. I feel strange and think about that man that I saw. Was he looking back at me? Was he unfrozen? It’s weird. I feel like he’s watching me even now, but that isn’t possible. But, I can’t stop the feeling of being watched. I turn around in the street and everyone is doing their own thing. No one is looking at me. I turn around and head home. 

I hang my jacket up and call out, “I’m home!” 

The house is silent. 

“Dad?” I call out. Complete silence.

I head upstairs and see him in bed. 

“Dad?” I ask again quietly, gently putting my hand on his shoulder trying to wake him.

My breath catches in my throat. My hands shaking, I put two fingers on the side of his throat to feel for his pulse. There isn’t one. I fall back on the floor and look at his body. He’s gone.

Project Zero

A/N : Hey guys ! This is my first fiction for old Logan and the whole of marvel thing . Hope you will like it . This will be two parts as I hope..

English is not my native language and I don’t have beta so forgive my mistakes.

Summary: You were the first project they made and for them you were a great failure. They didn’t know what you were able to do , but they kept you anyway until your sister Laura was born after five years of project Zero ( you )

Warnings: Old Logan / Laura sister/ Logan!father x daughter reader / angst / spoilers for Logan 2017 !

You were finally able to runaway with Laura in your hands , you ran until there was no more , you ran until the end of the roads with Laura and Gabriella , it was the only chance to stay alive after they closed the project and you wanted it for Laura not for yourself, you knew it was already too late as you were project Zero and that meant - at least for you - not able to be saved !

That time when Logan came to the motel and saw Laura you were only able to see him from far away distance as you were hiding, you were afraid that he might not be able to accept both of you and you wanted Laura to be the one who Logan is going to save , you knew she would have a better chance when he is around...

When Gabriella was killed you had no chance expect to run with Laura as she had now no one else ..

The moment you reached Logan place , the moment your eyes met you knew life is not going to be the same , you knew that you are not going to able to give up on him even if he asked you to and from the way you both stopped to look at each other you were able to guess that he felt the same even he wasn’t going to admit it easily...

“ The woman asked me to deliver one girl and that causing me so much problems already so who the hell are you ? “ Logan asked angrily trying to fight his thoughts and don’t let that show up .

You only took a step back with holding Laura with one hand and taking her closer to your side

“ Logan ! Please welcome our guests! The little one is Laura - the one I have been communicating with - the other one is..” The professor stopped at this point kind of sad about the fact of what happened to you “ the other one is Zero..” that was the only name he was able to give you , it was your code after all !

Logan with going to say something, but the bad guys interrupted and there was no more time to talk..

Since the first move Laura made you knew that Logan recognized her immediately, he was always a smart man and he knew that he was his girl for sure and you thought that was enough, but a part of you wanted more..a part of you wanted him to recognize you..

You weren’t like them , you weren’t Wolverine, but you were like a battery and blade to them , no one knew that expect you , that was the reason you were a failure to them as they never knew what you really was . You helped as a defender no more , you helped keeping the professor safe and getting him in the car when Logan asked to and the only thing that helped you to keep fighting was that short looks you shared with your dad even he was so angry on everything around, angry from himself more than he was angry from you..

You were finally able to stop for a while . You got out with Laura to play outside, leaving the professor and Logan alone in the car..

“ So what the hell ? What are you trying to say ?” Logan asked angrily

“ I am not trying to say anything! You aren’t blind Logan ! Maybe you are so old and weaker than before, but you are not blind and definitely not stupid! Both girls are your daughters ..Zero is a special case as she was born with a different kind of power ! She can help you to heal again , Logan . She has her ways that she kept it a secret since she was born even she knew that she might get killed because of that, but she waited on the hope of finding and helping you some day . She waited for Laura as well..” the professor explained

“ Do you want me to believe that ***” Logan said trying to accept that truth from the inside

“ You don’t have any other option as this is reality!” The professor ended the talk and then he looked to see the reflection of both of you on the mirror of the car . You had a very beautiful smile..he admitted that to himself

Logan started the video Gabriella left while you were all sleeping and then he started to listen to Laura story , but he also wanted to know more about you..

“ Finally about project Zero ! She is so afraid you might not accept her and she preferred that you save Laura instead of her , but if you are seeing that video that means she is already with you. Project Zero was a great failure! At least that what we all thought . When she was five years old the reachers recognized that she cannot be a Wolverine and she can’t live away from them , people like Zero can’t live 24 hours away from Wolverine type for a reason wasn’t clear then . That was the reason the decided it is time for a new project ( Laura) . When Laura was born Zero was able to live kind of normally even that word didn’t really exist for her as they prevented us from giving her a name and they refused to let her stay with the other kids as she was showing no power and she wasn’t talking as well..someday after putting that metal inside Laura I saw something..Zero has an ability as well ! Instead of the claws she has empty holes that fits Wolverine’s claws and by getting them in there she can kill a Wolverine and heal him..I don’t know a lot about that , but she will be useful to you, so please don’t give up on her..” the video ended and then Logan gave you along look asking himself “ Who are you ? “

He fucked up so many people's lives so badly in just one decade (not on purpose) that the universe put him in the summoning pool of all world influencing souls. He doesnt really have any special powers but he does serve as a vessel for rasputin at one point. He's the guy who says "people die when they are killed"

In 1943, the writers of the Batman movie serials introduced The Bat’s Cave, a secret underground lair for the caped crusader. Less than a year later, Don Cameron and Jack Bumley made the hideout a part of the comic mythos. The radio show, The Adventures of Superman, introduced a weakness for the man of steel with radioactive Kryptonite. Within six years, Kryptonite had become such a recognizable part of Superman stories that the comics added it. These are just a couple of examples of corporate synergy impacting storytelling in a huge way. It isn’t always successful (remember Spider-Man’s organic web shooters) but at the end of the day, when comics borrow from other media it does more good than harm. The X-Men were impacted by this in some subtle ways, the wedding of Cyclops and Phoenix, the black leather in Morrison’s run, the recent Apocalypse War event, but nothing was as impactful as the addition of a popular guest character from X-Men: Evolution.

So to ground ourselves on X-23, we need to understand a little bit about X-Men: Evolution. The show runners made the astute observation that the Xavier Institute circa 2001 wasn’t really qualified to teach calculus or chemistry and decided to have the strangest teens of them all attend public high school. Now, not everyone was aged down to a teenager. Professor Xavier, Storm, Beast, and Wolverine were all roughly their comics age, if not a bit older. Writer Craig Kyle decided that he still wanted to see what “teen Wolverine” would be like and created a character to fulfill that. She was young, younger than most of the cast, but she was the weapon that Wolverine’s creators only wished he could be. X-23 appeared in just two episodes of the show but she left a huge impact on an audience who only wanted more.

They got that in the comics when a top-secret facility dedicated itself to recreating Wolverine. Geneticist Sara Kinney was unable to creative a viable clone of Wolverine from the damaged DNA they had of him. After 22 attempts, she tried something novel, duplicating the X chromosome in place of the unsalvageable Y chromosome. It wouldn’t be a perfect clone but it was viable. Dr. Zander Rice forced Sara to carry the embryo to term and soon their weapon, X-23, was born. The child was tortured in the Facility, treated as more of a tool than a person. They coated her claws in adamantium, trained her in combat and killing, and dehumanized her. They developed a trigger sent to send her into a frenzied rage, pointed her in a direction, and got out of the way. When anyone treated her like more than a weapon, like her sensei did, they would use the sent to force X-23 to kill them. I didn’t matter if she was being used by Rice or tortured by her sadistic handler Kimura, the girl’s life was hell.

Sara felt a strange sense of motherhood to the child she carried. At one point her niece, Megan, was kidnapped by a serial killer and X-23 was sent to rescue her. After this, Dr. Rice decided that Dr. Kinney was emotionally unfit for the Facility and had her removed. Rice wanted to commercialize his child soldier, going as far as to create twenty-five additional clones, but Kinney had enough. She ordered X-23 to destroy Zander and the other clones, to cripple the facility. Rice was prepared, he used the trigger sent to throw X-23 into a berzerker rage, but he still fell victim to his creation. X-23 fulfilled her mission but Sara was caught in the crossfire. With her dying breath, Sara gave her daughter a name and Laura Kinney ran into the wild, free for the first time in her young life.

Laura journeyed through life, trying to find the closest thing she had to a family. She ended up in San Francisco at the doorstep of Sara’s sister Debbie and her niece Megan. Laura and Megan became quick friends and their relationship was enough to get Megan out of the slump she was in after she got kidnapped. Unfortunately, the Facility was not willing to lose their weapon so quickly. They had arranged for an agent to being dating Debbie and Kimura instructed him to unleash Laura’s trigger scent on the home. Megan was able to help Laura overcome the scent and stop Kimura but Laura knew that her family would never be safe. She left them to find the only other person to understand where she came from, Wolverine.

To her surprise, Wolverine was expecting her. Before her death, Dr. Kinney sent him a letter informing him about Laura and he tried to comfort the girl as much as he could. However, SHIELD was not thrilled about a dangerous mutant with an impressive body count running loose and captured her to be interrogated by Matt Murdock and Captain America. Capt was disturbed at the way Laura was used but understood she was just a child. He knew you don’t blame a gun, you blame the triggerman, and he let her free. With nowhere to turn Laura began selling herself in New York City to get by. She began cutting herself just to feel alive for the moment. It wasn’t until she met some other young mutants that she was able to break out of her funk and find a life outside of the underage sex trade.

She reached out to Wolverine and arranged a way for her to come to the X-Mansion without bringing up her dark past. Going from the sterile Facility to the vibrant school was a culture shock for Laura. She was reserved and rarely spent time with the other students. The Facility had trained her better in education and combat than anything the Institute could provide. It wasn’t until the mutant race was decimated that she found a place at the school.

In the wake of The Scarlet Witch’s curse, Emma Frost formed a squad of the best young students to be trained as the new X-Men. Though she initially didn’t permit Laura from joining, Cyclops thought it would be best for Laura to be among her most qualified classmates and put her on the team. The younger students encouraged Laura to curb some of her more murderous tendencies, and she even started to form a romantic relationship with Hellion (who is just the absolute worst and isn’t good enough for you, Laura). Kimura returned to torment Laura, capturing Mercury in the process, but the one-time X-23 lead her teammates to the rescue.

With the birth of the first mutant baby after M-Day came a power struggle for control of the child. To ensure the X-Men ended up with the child, Cyclops ordered the best trackers, including Laura, to join together as the new incarnation of X-Force. Once the baby was secure, Cyclops wanted to ensure the future of the mutant race and kept X-Force going as his secret kill squad. He told Laura that he needed her on the team and she accepted in spite of Wolverine’s objectives. X-23 was a valuable asset in taking on threats before they could threaten mutantkind. She was a weapon again, but she told herself it was for a better cause.

Eventually, the team was found out and Cyclops disbanded it. Her friends from the New X-Men were disturbed that Laura returned to her killing was and she felt like an outcast once again. She struck out on her own but was quickly joined by Gambit. The Cajun knew a thing or two about having a dark past and was able to mentor Laura without making her feel ashamed for what she had done. After some misadventures, Laura missed school but knew she wouldn’t be welcome back with her old classmates. Following up on an offer from Black Widow, Laura joined the Avengers Academy.

At the Academy, she struggled to bond with students who understood even less about what she did than her old classmates. She was quickly wrapped up in Arcade’s plot to have his own Hunger Games with teen heroes. She tried to contain herself, she knew she could kill any of the other competitors without much effort, but she thought of herself as more than a sharpened blade. As the ordeal came to a close Arcade released the trigger sent in the arena and Laura lost her control. It took the full measure of Hazmat’s radioactive blast to halt her but the damage was already done. Arcade had been streaming the whole thing online and now the world knew what a monster X-23 could be.

After being rescued from the arena Laura wandered Florida and was soon chased by the Purifiers. The time-displaced original five X-Men found Laura after blindly following a blip on Cerebro and took her in. They were initial apprehensive towards Laura but the young Cyclops knew what it was like to feel alone and reached out to her. He soon left to spend time with his space pirate dad, and Laura was alone again. He was the only thing keeping her with the O5 and when he left she tried to leave too. The time-displaced (but from a different time) Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attacked her as she left and she tried desperately to warn the X-Men. They battled, the X-Men won, and Angel realized that she was pretty great and they began dating.

After Logan’s death, Laura felt the responsibility to keep up his legacy and became the all-new, all-different Wolverine. On a mission in Paris, Wolverine stopped an assassination attempt but was shocked to discover that the triggerman looked just like her. She soon found herself in a plot using cloned versions of Laura as assassins. With the help of the clones, Laura was able to take out this new facility, but with heavy losses. One of the clones died, the other betrayed Laura for Kimura, and the youngest, Gabby, stayed with Laura. She had to find a way to be responsible for a young girl who was a lot like her but soon Laura, Gabby, and their new pet wolverine Johnathan (not joking) tried to do what Laura had always done. They found their place in a world where they don’t fit in.

So I am gonna get real real with y’all. I like the Kyle & Yoast X-Men stuff a lot less than most people. While I appreciate the role they played in Laura’s creation and development, none of their work with the character resonates with me. In fact, there has only been one run with Laura to make me really care about the character, Tom Taylor’s All-New Wolverine. The book’s first arc The Four Sisters sets the stage for this new Wolverine and has a perfect combination of humor, action, drama, and heart. All this being drawn by David Lopez elevates it to a whole new level. It’s all on Marvel Unlimited or check out the trade on Amazon.

Laura is a character I like, but don’t love. It’s a significant problem with distaff counterparts like Laura, they are often held back by being the “girl version” of the original character. On top of that, Laura is a character who it easy to write poorly and often struggles from an attitude that is a little too close to Shadow the Hedgehog. But when she is written well, she sure is a treat. Not to mention I have a huge soft spot for Evolution so that is going to help her case. Kid Omega is another character who falls into the same issues of consistency as Laura but I have enjoyed his stories more. Arcade is the floor for the character because she is way deeper than him as a character. Right above her is Legion and look, I’ve been thinking about Legion a lot recently and I have a ton of love for him right now. However, until TV Legion and comics Legion start to get a lot more similar I and gonna have to rank X-23 above him as the new number 23 (see what I did there? It wasn’t 100% intentional but it worked out nice) in the Xavier Files.
