“That being said, the world is like a river. You can never go as straight as you like." He turned around, and the expression on the captain's face was not smug, nor did it sneer at the ideals of a young man. It was that of a hermit who had weathered a great many things and tried to play them off calmly. "But those periodic twists and turns give fish a place to live.”

Spice and Wolf: Anniversary Collector's Edition
Yeah, not something you see every day, and not really something you'll see or hear discussed in the manga/LN community, oddly enough. But it exists. A medieval-inspired omnibus of the "original" 17 volumes of the Spice and Wolf light novel, and places them in a stunning package. So, lots to show off, lots to explain!
Though to cut a long story short: It's an incredible volume that continues to prove that Yen Press stands at the top of quality releases like this within the bigger players in the industry, and that people should 100% be buying up A Certain Magical Index's Old Testament Omnibus edition so that we can continue to get more of this incredible format.
For the uninitiated, Spice and Wolf originally finished at 17 volumes in July of 2011. The story was meant to be ended at that point in time, but 5 years down the road in 2016, Spice and Wolf started up again, as well as a sequel story Wolf and Parchment. From there, it's continued onwards with both series to a total of 24 volumes in the main line, and 7 volumes in the sequel series.
This leaves Yen Press in a sort of odd predicament. The story's continued, and there's no known ending point in sight. Another decade of Spice and Wolf is fast approaching though. So part of me wonders, are they going to do another anniversary collection with what they have available in 3 years time? Or will they wait until they have a similar volume count to this first anniversary edition?
Regardless, about the edition itself. Like I had said, it's an anniversary edition for the light novel, celebrating a decade of Spice and Wolf. It's original retail run was all the way back in 2017. However, Yen Press "recently" (in 2021) had a limited reprint they ran through their website directly. I didn't purchase from it (I got an original print online), but it's safe to say it was a rather limited run. In addition to that limit, it's also a "different" trim (lots of quotations, I know). The reprint ran solely through Yen Press' website is a numbered edition, while the original print run is just a regular version.
Alright, history out of the way! This thing is massive, the photo (which I'll add below once more for reference) doesn't really capture the sheer scale of this thing. It weighs 3kg alone, and even though the pages are condensed, it totals at about 950 of them. It's also approximately a foot (or just shy) tall, and nearly 2.5 inches thick. That number doesn't really sound that big, but lets compare to something like Choujin X.
Choujin X stands at about 0.7 inches thick, which is less than a third of the thickness of this omnibus. Still, not too bad for 1 volume versus 17. But what I'm neglecting to say, is that all the pages here are doubled up (aside from illustrations). Anywhere that there's text in this monster of a book, there's two columns of it. So, you could cheat and say there's about 1700 pages of content in 2.5 inches of thickness.
But at the end of the day, the scale of this book is hilarious. It measures in at 9.25" wide, 2.5" deep, and 11.13" tall. Choujin X on the other hand is a measly 5.75" wide, 0.7" deep, and 8.25" tall. It's nearly 8 times the volume of Choujin X. For reference, Choujin X to a regular Viz size manga only has a difference of about 3 cubic inches. So yeah, world of difference.
Anyways, the quality of this book is as outstanding as you'd expect. The cover has a super nice feel and finish to it, and is very sturdy. Despite the sheer size of it, the spine doesn't really shift around too much when flipping pages or trying to twist the book, and the binding is really impressive. Given the scale of the book, it can be a challenge to have it be so loose, without worrying about overall integrity while reading, but Yen Press has nailed it here. They continually prove that they are the kings of high end releases within the industry.
And here's just a quick look at the spine for the book. It's pretty standard and fits well with the overall design of the covers. Nothing to write home about, but also nothing to complain about.
Now, for the interior. The paper is super nice and smooth, and there's not really any bleed through or anything, even with illustrations and color pages. Though, if you hold it up at the right angle to the right kind of light you'll see that bleed through happen, it's just that in practice it's not something you'll ever notice given how you read this monster.
What I find sort of interesting is how the color pages actually end up separating into volumes and chapters quite well for the book. Even if there wasn't the included bookmark/whatever those threads are called, you'd be able to skim and find your place rather quickly.
So I'll just finish this oddly long post off with extra images of how the book looks inside.
Essentially, it's just super cool. There's an insane amount of words on each page, but it's not really overwhelming or anything because it's well formatted. The font isn't anything special, but I like the color of the text since it ties in with the overall design.
At the end of it all, this book absolutely is worth the money, and I really hope that Yen Press reprints it. In the same breath, people should 100% be getting prepared to purchase A Certain Magical Index's omnibus version of this. It's well worth the money as a book, and it presents a far easier method of purchasing the series considering some volumes of the original run are out of print. As well as that, it's cheaper than buying the singles. It's a win across the board. So for those that can afford it, I highly, highly recommend it, so that consumers can prove to Yen Press that quality releases like this sell well and should be explored for other series.

Manga the Week of 12/`16/20
SEAN: As we get closer to the holidays, we get more and more books being published.
ASH: This turn of events pleases me.
MELINDA: And me.
SEAN: Cross Infinite World has a new title, I Reincarnated As Evil Alice, So the Only Thing I’m Courting Is Death!. Our heroine dies and is reincarnated in an otome game, and she *is* the heroine this time… but the game is notorious for having almost all bad ends. Expect a lot of Alice in Wonderland vibes here as well.
No debuts for J-Novel Club, but a heaping helping of ongoing digital light novels. We get An Archdemon’s Dilemma 11, Arifureta 11, I Refuse to Be Your Enemy! 4, The Intrigue of Marielle Clarac (Book 5 in that series), Slayers 4, and The Sorcerer’s Receptionist 2. Phew!
Kodansha has some print. We get Drifting Dragons 7, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 6, Gleipnir 8, the 2nd Magic Knight Rayearth manga box set, which will finish the series, and also has a bonus artbook. That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime 15 and UQ Holder 21 are also out.
ASH: I’ve really been enjoying Drifting Dragons. I’ve also somehow never actually read Magic Knight Rayearth yet.
SEAN: Digitally the debut is I Guess I Became the Mother of the Great Demon King’s 10 Children in Another World (Isekai de Saikyou Maou no Kodomo-tachi Juunin no Mama ni Nacchaimashita), which sounds like your standard isekai but is also by Ema Toyama, author of Missions of Love and other shoujo classics. This is not shoujo: it runs in Shonen Sirius. A girl whose mother has died plays the game the mother never finished… and finds herself in another world.
ASH: Ema Toyama, you say? That piques my interest a bit more than just the title alone.
MELINDA: I don’t read much digitally, but this intrigues me as well, almost entirely because of the author.
SEAN: There is also Dolly Kill Kill 9, Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- 2, GE: Good Ending 12, Heroine for Hire 4 (the final volume), Kakushigoto 10, Orient 9, Shaman King: The Super Star 2, Shojo FIGHT! 14, and The Writer and His Housekeeper 3.
MICHELLE: I really, really need to get caught up on Shojo FIGHT!.
SEAN: One Peace has a 3rd manga volume for The Reprise of the Spear Hero.
Debuting from Seven Seas is Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! Everyday Misadventures! (Watashi, Nichijou wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne!), the 4-koma spinoff of Mile’s antics that everyone wanted. It runs in Comic Earth Star.
Also out from Seven Seas: Goodbye My Rose Garden 3 (the final volume) and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear’s 4th novel (digital-first).
MICHELLE: I wouldn’t say Goodbye, My Rose Garden was an amazing series, but it was certainly good enough to read the third and final volume.
ASH: I still need to read the second volume (and now soon the third), but I found the first volume to be enjoyable.
SEAN: Sol Press, after what seems like 80,000 years, has the second Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World light novel.
Tokyopop has the 2nd and final volume of No Vampire, No Happy Ending.
Vertical gives us the 4th Katanagatari omnibus digitally (I will keep repeating this till it’s correct), Kino’s Journey 7, and With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun 2.
MICHELLE: I really liked the first volume of With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun and am eagerly anticipating the second.
MELINDA: Always here for Kino’s Journey, too.
SEAN: They also have Zoku-Owarimonogatari, the final, absolutely the last, no take backs, Monogatari Series novel. Unless they license the others that came after this.
Viz’s debut is Remina, another helping of Junji Ito just in time for winter. This is sci-fi, but still just as terrifying. It ran in Big Comic Spirits.
MICHELLE: I am down for this sci-fi/horror blend!
ASH: Yup! I’m here for this one, too.
MELINDA: Yes!
SEAN: Also from Viz: Blue Flag 5, Golden Kamuy 19, Levius/est 7, Maison Ikkoku Collector’s Edition 2, and No Guns Life 8.
ANNA: Glad that Maison Ikkoku is being rereleased and looking forward to Blue Flag.
MICHELLE: What Anna said.
ASH: I should actually read Maison Ikkoku now that it is readily available again.
MELINDA: I should be buying them, since I never managed to acquire a full collection of the original release!
SEAN: Yen On has a truly terrifying number of light novels coming out. The first debut is The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten (Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsu no Ma ni ka Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken). We’ve seen a mini-rebirth of the non-fantasy romcom in recent licenses, and this falls into that category. A guy lends his neighbor his umbrella one day, she offers to help around his house in return, and a relationship blossoms.
The second debut is a spinoff, Goblin Slayer Side Story 2: Dai Katana. This apparently goes into the past of Sword Maiden.
There is also (deep breath): Accel World 23, The Alchemist Who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life 5, Baccano! 15, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy 2, The Devil Is a Part-Timer 18, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?) 5, Suppose a Kid From the Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town 4, and Torture Princess 6.
ASH: That is a fair number of light novels!
SEAN: On the Yen Press side, there’s even more. Debut #1: 86, the manga adaptation of the grim military fantasy light novel series. It runs in Young Gangan.
Carole and Tuesday runs in Young Ace, and I believe is the rare case where the anime comes first and the manga follows. Girls who want to be musicians… on Mars!
ANNA: I watched half of the anime….
ASH: I do like musicians… and Mars…
MELINDA: I… kind of want it. Though I’m not sure how to interpret the fact that Anna only watched half of the anime.
SEAN: Not quite a debut, but we do see Overlord: The Complete Anime Artbook.
Strawberry Fields Once Again (Strawberry Fields wo Mou Ichido) is a yuri romance that seems to have a twist to it. It ran in Mediaworks’ @ vitamin.
And Wolf & Parchment is the manga adaptation of the sequel to Spice & Wolf.
Also from Yen: ACCA 13-Territory Inspection Department P.S. 2, The Devil Is a Part-Timer! 16, Goblin Slayer 9, King of Eden 2, KonoSuba 11, Lust Geass 2, No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular! 17, Plunderer 6, Rascal Does Not Dream of Petit Devil Kouhai (another omnibus), Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, Chapter 3: Truth of Zero 11 (the final volume of this arc), Reborn As a Polar Bear 4, The Saga of Tanya the Evil 12, A Witch’s Printing Office 4, and Yowamushi Pedal’s 16th omnibus.
MICHELLE: I am fixin’ to have a YowaPeda catch-up spree and am very happy about that.
ASH: Same! And I always look forward to reading Natsume Ono’s manga, so I plan on picking up the ACCA continuation as well.
SEAN: Any presents from this list you’re giving out?

Manga the Week of 10/27/21
SEAN: BOO!
ASH: Aaah!
MICHELLE: Ack!
ANNA: EEK!
MELINDA: … erk?
SEAN: We start with Yen On, which has The Detective Is Already Dead 2, the 15th KonoSuba, and Solo Leveling 3.
ASH: I really ought to give Solo Leveling a try before I get too far behind.
Two new series from Yen Press. The first is the manga version of I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss, whose light novel came out earlier this month.
The other is Never Open It: The Taboo Trilogy, a short story collection by famed creator Ken Niimura.
ASH: I am so excited for this one! I really enjoy Niimura’s work.
ANNA: This looks interesting.
SEAN: Also from Yen: Gabriel Dropout 10, Mint Chocolate 4, My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong As I Expected 16, and Wolf and Parchment 2.
Udon Entertainment has the 8th Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu.
Seven Seas doesn’t have much, but what it has are mostly debuts. Boy Meets Maria is an LGBT title from Printemps Shuppan’s Canna, and I hear it’s quite powerful, but also quite dark. It’s finished in one volume.
ASH: I’ll be giving it a read, for sure.
MICHELLE: Same here.
MELINDA: Oh, interesting!
SEAN: Necromance is a shonen title from Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket. A hero becomes an undead to save the world… but now he can’t even touch the girl he loves! Can he find a way to return himself to life?
ASH: I don’t know about the manga, but that title is great.
MELINDA: Agreed.
SEAN: Sarazanmai: The Official Manga Anthology is what it says – a collection by many artists based around the popular series.
ASH: I like seeing these types of anthologies released.
SEAN: The Walking Cat: A Cat’s-Eye View of the Zombie Apocalypse is a Futabasha title from Manga Action. Zombie apocalypse meets cat manga. It’s a 550-page omnibus with all 3 volumes in 1.
ASH: That’s quite the tome! Count me curious.
MICHELLE: Huh.
ANNA: Hmm.
SEAN: One Peace has The Rising of the Shield Hero 21.
Kodansha has a debut in print… well, a spinoff. The Seven Deadly Sins: Original Sins Short Story Collection is what it sounds like. It also includes the original “pilot” for the series.
Also in print: Grand Blue Dreaming 14, To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts 12, Whisper Me a Love Song 4, and With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun 5.
MICHELLE: I really liked the first volume of With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day Is Fun. I should read more of it.
SEAN: Digitally Kodansha debuts Even Given the Worthless “Appraiser” Class, I’m Actually the Strongest (Fuguushoku [Kanteishi] ga Jitsu wa Saikyou Datta – Naraku de Kitaeta Saikyou no [Shingan] de Musou Suru), which runs in Magazine Pocket. It is what it is.
Also out digitally: Back When You Called Us Devils 6, Chihiro-kun Only Has Eyes for Me 3, DAYS 26, Farewell My Dear Cramer 6, The Girl, the Shovel and the Evil Eye 2, Harem Marriage 10, Mr. Bride 3, and Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence 5.
Remember all those print titles from J-Novel Club I talked about last week? They got bumped. Insert them here.
ASH: I’ll be on the lookout.
SEAN: Their digital light novel debut is A Late-Start Tamer’s Laid-Back Life (Deokure Tamer no Sonohigurashi). A gamer is excited to start a new VRMMORPG… but quickly finds the class he chose is not really suited to being awesome, but to slow life.
Also out digitally next week: Ascendance of a Bookworm 15, Campfire Cooking in Another World 5 (manga version), The Greatest Magicmaster’s Retirement Plan 11, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom 14, Mapping: The Trash-Tier Skill That Got Me Into a Top-Tier Party 7, My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! 4, Reincarnated as the Piggy Duke: This Time I’m Gonna Tell Her How I Feel! 3, and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: The Wayward Journey 14.
Dark Horse gives us a 7th Mob Psycho 100.
Cross Infinite World has the 3rd volume of Reincarnated as the Last of My Kind.
Lastly, Airship has The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan in print.
And in early digital versions they have Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling 2 and The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent 4.
What manga are you trapped inside, face pressed against the pages, unable to escape?

CanvasReads: Spice & Wolf
I so rarely do books.
Well, guess I did the entire Harry Potter series recently.
Point is, I’m not a voracious reader. I read, sure, but at a leisurely pace, reading bits and pieces before bed. It usually takes me about a month or more to get through a book because life gets busy, I have many interests, and it’s hard to multitask while reading.[1] Books also tend to be such a time commitment for me that I have really high standards.
What this means is it took me about seven years to crawl through the Spice & Wolf light novel series. Why did I do this? Well, I read almost the entirety of the Discworld series,[2] and I liked the anime, so might as well.
So I spent a few years alternating in and out of the series with abandon. It never really grabbed me fully at any point, but it served as a decent “Ugh, need a new book. Might as well” series. Now that I’ve read the initial 17 volumes, the time has come to ask “Do I read the Spring Logs and Wolf & Parchment, or is it time to let go?”
Great question, myself. You brillant, handsome bearded man you.
A big criticism you should know going in is that the actual writing is… not great on a technical level.
I don’t know if this is the case with the original Japanese text (which may have a different set of writing rules than the West) or the translation (because translation gets more difficult with more text) or a mixture, but the writing in the books is boring and sometimes confusing.
A big stumbling block is the lack of clear dialogue tags. When Lawrence and Holo start conversing, it’s easy to lose track of who says what because often lines of dialogue get entire paragraphs to themselves, then there’s a line of action, then a line of dialogue that’s unattributed. And, unlike in the Dub of the Spice & Wolf anime, Holo’s antiquated style of speech is not played up nearly as much, and there isn’t as much difference in word usage to distinguish between our leads.
Then they pick up some random kid named Col in volume 6, and suddenly it’s that’s much harder to track.
To be fair, writing unique voices can be very, very difficult, and I’m not even sure I could claim to have mastered it, since I’m too close to my own works to judge fairly.
The issue compounds with the books’ tendency to tell over showing (such as Holo’s much lauded wisdom, despite spending most of the series sitting about stubbornly waiting for Lawrence to solve the issue, before jumping in saying she knew so all along!) and also leaving a lot of details vaguely implied (such as the status of Lawrence and Holo’s relationship at any given time).
Leaving things unexplained and for the audience to figure out is fine, as long as the writer either explains themselves eventually (giving the solution to a mystery plot) or doesn’t require deciphering the meaning to understand the plot (as is the case with most secondary romance plots).
Spice & Wolf however seems to have a tendency to just assume the reader’s following in lock step with its various implication and winks, then proceeds forward without clarity. Which is pretty frustrating when half the book is about Medieval Economics and key concepts only get a very meager explanation.
Again, I don’t know if this because the original Japanese text was vague in parts, or if the translation did a poor job of elaborating on meaning and subtext that may have been inherent to the Japanese.
Then there’s the overuse of passive voice, which I know I can blame of the translator.
The passive voice is a technique that can help you reach your goal, provided that your goal is to have your writing be deprived of excitement and motion. It’s a sentence written in such a way where nouns have verbs occur to them rather than nouns performing verbs. Basically, if the sentence sounds like an exaggerated police report, it’s probably written in a passive voice. It deprives the characters of ownership.
It took me several books to actually catch on that passive voice was to blame for how unexciting it felt to read.
But enough with my uncharacteristic dive into actual literary form and function! What about the actual story?
It was serviceable. On the whole, the anime adaption was a better experience, since that included a level of visual excitement that riding around in Lawrence’s head doesn’t afford. The actual economic hijinks had the potential to be interesting, but could be hard to follow without visual aids.
The anime adapted Books One through Three, skipped Four, and then adapted the fifth book. Besides some brief world details and a few changes, the anime did a good job of covering the stories.
The fourth volume, however, is probably my favorite story, since it did a good job of utilizing its low fantasy setting, working the medieval economics and socio-political environment into a plot, and actually acting upon Holo’s vaguely defined capabilities (it’s the only time she does anything related to being a harvest goddess).
In fact, unlike in the anime, the biggest drain on the narrative is Kraft Lawrence. In the anime, Lawrence is an everyman with a level of charm and knowledge, while book Lawrence is overly plain and becomes increasingly passive as the books go on. He takes risks less readily, and is just boring.
The extended cast is filled with interesting characters and hidden histories, all of who could carry a story of their own, and our protagonist is a guy moseying along, vaguely wants to own a store, but doesn’t actually pursue the goal with any vigor.
Even Holo, a literal deity trying to find her homeland from centuries ago, is slow to action.
Often throughout the series both will reflect melancholically on how they can’t journey together forever, and they’re both acutely aware of their growing affections, but they never commit to any certain course of action. For a dozen plus volumes, they go vaguely north, sometimes arguing, but such conflicts spawn from Holo being a ‘Mysterious Woman’.
Holo’s been around for ages, and is actually living through a period of decline for her ilk (pagan gods), but she never talks about it, and the narrative never explores it. There is fertile ground in Holo’s being, but nothing grows.
The protagonists are complacent, and the excitement usually comes from a third party. A miller and his priest girlfriend feeling alienated from their community. A Sheep god turned shepherd. A merchant guild attempting to build a town without the backing of noble blood, but with economic bedrock.
All along, Lawrence is wobbling back and forth asking if he should do something about anything.
Then he plays a relatively minor role in the resolutions, and rides on.
Even the introduction of Col to the merchant’s wagon doesn’t really add anything. He’s just kind of there, sometimes making dialogue a little more confusing.
The best stories are the short ones where neither Lawrence nor Holo appear, but instead develop the backstories of those they encounter.
There’s a story in one of the Side Colors volumes that actually shows how Eve became the ruthless merchant we meet in Volume 5. It’s pretty cool.
Then, when she appears in a later story (after Lawrence and Holo somehow manage to backpedal into going south), Lawrence treats the woman who conned and stabbed him with relative indifference.
There’s also two stories following Norah (the shepherd girl from Volume 2) told in first person perspective of her dog Enek.
They’re charming and I really want to steal the conceit for myself at some point.
The strengths of the anime and the books themselves are an interesting dichotomy. The anime finds strength in its characters and the relationship of the leads, with some economic lectures mixed in. The books, meanwhile, really thrive with the world it builds. With some economic lessons built in.
The nameless world of Spice & Wolf is clearly in the middle of change. The power of a monotheistic church is on the rise, pagan gods are diminishing and either disappearing or finding new jobs,[3] and there’s even a subtle shift in how economies function and hints of the inevitable rise of paper money.
Times are a changing, but it’s on the edges of the story, never full addressed but still lending a weight to the proceedings.
It’s a good setting, and would make good inspirations for a RPG setting. There’s something exciting about the concept of gods who’ve already lost a culture war they didn’t know was occuring. They’re living relics hiding in the fringes of society, even those trying to maintain some power in the new world order finding the earth shifting out from beneath of their feet at inopportune moments.
In short, I found the books inspiring if not particularly good. There’s plenty of ideas I would love to steal and run with, whether in my own fictions or collaborative works.[4]
As for if I’ll be reading the continuation… I might as well, I suppose. The stronger volumes are the vignette collections, which Spring Log promises to be, and I am rather fond of next generation stories, so seeing how Lawrence and Holo’s offspring turns out is a inviting concept.
However, she’s being teamed up with Col, who was a weakly written character in this original run of stories, and I’ve often talked of my dislike of large age differences in romantic pairings, so if Wolf & Parchment heads in that direction, I’ll probably jump ship in short order.
Well, this has been a rambling… review, I guess? New job had me out of sorts for a while, so I apologize if my writing’s ended up below my usual standards. I’ll try to shape back up.
If you wish to support me, considering checking out my other works, send me comments or questions, or even giving a few dollars to my patreon. Money brings me closer to my dream of… not having to be on the frontline against the general public.
Gall, do I hate customer service…
Kataal kataal.
[1] Audiobooks are expensive, and I have podcasts to listen to besides. [2] Still have to find and read Science of Discworld. Been reluctant because, well, science is the one subject that neither interests me nor am I good at. [3] An interesting parallel to the Discworld, especially Small Gods and Hogfather. Also Thief of Time I suppose… [4] Ryuutama, in particular, seems like a good fit for adapting Spice & Wolf plots for the table.
