why was ma boi so thin and ragged after his wintersleep? does he have nightmares too? Does he have to compete for resources really hard with his brothers? do they try to harm him in his sleep? or is that just how they wake up?> I know bears wake up thinner but OGUSDKCBSKJB how well does ma boi sleep in a room full of people who all hate each other and take it out on him especially/

So the thing about wintersleep is that once it starts, it's pretty heavy. A lot of cognitive function shuts down to save calories, so Kanai don't really dream a lot, and if they do happen to wake up they're pretty groggy and slow. Winter is the only time of year the brothers don't fight. They're simply toooooo sleepy.

Kanai do lose a lot of weight in the winter. It can be a dramatic change, but Ruyak woke up that spring unusually lean. If a Kanai goes into wintersleep with a less-than-ideal amount of fat on their body, they can wake up really thin in spring. And Ruyak had a pretty stressful season, so he ended up being a little below ideal weight going into winter. He tends to not eat as well when he's stressed out.
