Found Family Battle (First Round)

Eternally loyal to the lunar Crown (after a fashion, anyway), lunar guard Winter Hayle closes out our main cast! It's been very fun, and I don't plan on abandoning the world of the Lunar Chronicles (or this version of it! I do have a couple bonus pages planned, including a Jacin with the scars I forgot to draw last post).

Winter approaches Jacin's plot points with a bit more of a smile, and thus finds herself getting along much better with the Rampion crew while she's with them. Though she keeps her characteristic airy demeanor, it's as intentional as any other guard keeping a still mind- Winter is almost wholly unreadable to the outside eye, save for her devotion to her prince, who she values above all else. Dressed in the dark uniform of the lunar guard, she fades into the background of luminescent artemisia- or at least, she tries to. Notably, she keeps her hair cropped a bit shorter and held up in a ponytail for practicality's sake, and lacks three distinctive canonical scars down her cheek. (additionally, her uniform is inspired by Clara's uniform in Nutcracker and the Four Realms, because that movie changed me irrevocably and I think the effect is about right)

Characters Aesthetic: The Lunar Chronicles

I've always been super into the bodyguard x princess trope and Jacin and Winter deliver on so many levels. I love how devoted he is to her--to her safety and happiness above all else, except when that happiness would include him, and then he can't let himself be selfish enough to allow it (he better soon though I swear)--and how much she relies on him. How much she needs him, no matter what he thinks about his station, his responsibilities.

He was always going to protect her. Even if she'd been the daughter of a lowly seamstress and a simple guard, he would have found her, devoted himself to her. I like to think Evret is looking down from somewhere warm and happy with his wife (his real wife), glad that at least, Winter has always had Jacin looking after her. Even when he couldn't protect her from the Queen, he could be there for her. He could protect her from anything else that might try to harm her.

And in the end, he did protect her from Levana, in all the ways that mattered.

"You need to help Selene and Scarlet and the others." "No. Either she's winning or she's losing. My presence won't sway it at this point. But you--I can take care of you. For once." "You always take care of me."

I think Jacin blames himself for Winter's scars. I think he always has--for not being able to protect her from the worst threat facing her when it really mattered.

Except he did.

The scars on her face don't bother her--they never have. I think it's the loneliness that was the real threat. The isolation. Knowing that her every move was being watched by the Queen, that her very existence was a threat that one day Levana would have to deal with. Never being able to truly connect with her people, even though they loved her. But Jacin was there. He was her rock--her anchor. He kept her sure of herself, of reality.

He took care of her when it counted. He saved her life, risking his own--and his family's--in the process. And he found her. He always found her, even when she thought she was losing herself.

And that's what counts, what I think Jacin can't yet understand--because allowing himself to go there means taking something for himself that he so desperately wants, even though he knows he doesn't deserve it. Doesn't deserve her. But something tells me Winter won't be giving him a choice but to get the fuck over it.

I haven’t gotten into it on this blog, but I’ve been super into The Lunar Chronicles since September 2022. Anyway, below are my late night ramblings that nobody cares about on why Angel with a Shotgun is Jacin Clay’s song. I’m making this list at 1:45 in the morning while I’m supposed to be packing for a trip, so this isn’t gonna be neatly organized or coherent lol.

Spoilers below for Cress and Winter btw

Alright, so we’re properly introduced to Jacin during Cress. He’s made a couple cameos in Cinder iirc (at least one) but it’s during the third book we finally learn his name, personality etc. 

A crucial part of his character is of course, his Princess Winter, aka childhood best friend/crush. Typically around others he’s serious, sarcastic, cold. But with her it’s like….I mean look he keeps his face and mind blank around others as a place guard of Queen Levana’s would but whenever it comes to Winter it’s just….his face visibly changes ok this doesn’t make much sense now that I’m reading it but onwards.

Onto the analysis of Angel with a Shotgun and how it relates to Jacin Clay

““And they say before you start a war, you better know what you’re fighting for. Well baby you are all that I adore, if love is what you need a soldier I will be.” -He stays as a puppet of Levana so he could stay and protect Winter the best he can, he doesn’t want to leave her alone. He knows Levana despises Winter and would take any chance to hurt her/kill her (as shown when she inflicted her scars and when she gave her letumosis.) -”I’ll throw away my faith babe just to keep you safe, don’t you know you’re eveyrthing I have.” -He’s not loyal to Levana whatsoever (“I serve my princess, no one else.”)he’s loyal only to Princess Winter. He risked their lives and kills Ryu in order to fake her death and help her escape.  -”“Sometimes to win, you have to sin.” As I said above, betrayed Rampion crew and killed Ryu for Winter. 

-”“And I wanna live not just survive.”

He wants to be a fuckingh doctor ok he doesn’t wanna be a palace guard he wants to be a doctor. He wants to live. 

Anyway, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, I love Jacin Clay and this essay isn’t structured properly but I stand by every word goodnight.

Jacin left the castle to be a doctor so he and Winter fell out of touch. Evret is dead but Winter doesn’t have her scars in this AU. (MLB SPOILERS) Also I feel like Sybil could be Mayura?
