Windrush Day
On the third official Windrush Day, we recognise the half a million people who travelled to the UK after World War II, and celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants to our communities here in the UK.
Our 'Nice Cup of Tea?' display is a collaboration with members of Oxford's African Caribbean and Windrush communities, highlighting hidden stories of empire and slavery behind the tea trade. You can see it on display in Gallery 40.

windrush Day . My mum was a nurse and she helped rebuild this country (United Kingdom) This was her picture in her passport which we still have it’s stamped indefinite leave, she was smart and got her british passport soon after . But indefinite leave means indefinite leave .... im not saying those who didn’t are silly but they were promised a new life and helped build that dream and are now being victimised..... people say they should be grateful because of Churchill he “allowed” them to be able to settle in Europe .... now years after here’s the question what should be asked ... should they be grateful for the lies? The betrayal from the mothership.... . . . Happy windrush day but I’m not sure happy is the appropriate word . You have to have lived it or affected by it to understand . #windrushday #windrushgeneration #windrushscandal #windrushday2020 #leroydawkins #monkey #magazinecover #empirewindrush #blackpeoplematter #blacklivesmatter #discoverunder5k #discoverunder1k #discoverunder10k #discoverunder2k #milkandhoney #greatbritain #unitedkingdom #england #winstonchurchill (at Windrush) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvi4XvAAHS/?igshid=xu5nse0lcrs7

The SS Empire #Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks in 1948 carrying passengers from the #Caribbean. Invited by Britain to assist with post-war reconstruction, many of this generation resided in #Brent, becoming part of the fabric of the borough with a lasting legacy. This #WindrushDay take the opportunity to explore some fantastic @brentmuseumandarchives e-collections of widely varying recommended reads as we honour the British Caribbean community and the half a million people who travelled to the UK after the Second World War. I'm so thankful! Let's celebrate all the great people that put the great into Great Britain! It's not because of empires and kingdoms it's because of beautiful hardworking vibrant humans. A reflective Alford Gardner, who is one of the few surviving Windrush passengers from the SS Empire Windrush, which left Jamaica in 1948, bound for Britain. This year marks the 70th anniversary of their arrival. It’s also the year that the British government decided to deport 63 members of this community and contacted many others to notify them that they have to leave. #windrush #windrushgeneration #portrait #humanrights @lumixuk @lumix #lumixg9 #leicadgsummilux25mm #leicadg #alfordgardner #britishpolitics https://www.instagram.com/p/BoRONPCFe7V/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1q9v8uw7z9qr8

In 1948 the ship Empire Windrush docked in Tilbury carrying the first group of around 800 passengers from the Caribbean. The passengers had been granted British Citizenship, without restriction, in the 1948 British Nationality Act and were encouraged to come to Britain to work in the re-building of post war Britain. These migrants became known as the Windrush Generation. Those passengers who did not have accommodation arranged were sent to the former air raid shelters in Clapham and from there to sign on for work at Coldharbour Lane Employment Exchange in Brixton. This location resulted in a large community of Caribbean migrants settling in the Brixton area. The new arrivals found much work to do in transport infrastructure, the new National Health Service and the rebuilding of Britain. Despite facing hardships, discrimination and overt racism most of the settlers from the West Indies made their lives in Britain, working to retirement age. In 1971, when freedom of movement within the Commonwealth was ending, the new Immigration Act gave indefinite leave to remain to all Commonwealth citizens already living in the UK. Then in 2013 the then Home Secretary, Teresa May, introduced the racist 'Hostile Environment' policy, a vicious clamp down on migrants found not to be carrying correct documents, whilst simultaneously making getting the right documents almost impossible. As Teresa May said herself in a complete rejection of natural justice "deport first and hear appeals later'. Many Windrush Generation citizens, now in retirement after a lifetime of living and working here, and many of their offspring who arrived here as young children found themselves targeted, denied health treatment and even deported. Though the Government has had to climb down somewhat the 'Hostile Environment' is still in place as Britain turns its back on all those who have contributed so much to our economy, culture and community. #londonhistory #myattsfield #windrushgeneration #hostileenvironment #blackhistory #brixton #publicart #sculpture #mosaic (at Brixton)

Since its #WindrushDay I thought I'd reshare these pieces. The text below was penned by @sazisophiri about my work, I couldn't have put it better myself • • • • • • Featured works: 'God Save the Queen' and 'Windrush Scandal' by @thehoneyeffect . . . . 72 years ago the HMT Empire Windrush arrived by Tilbury Docks carrying workers from the Caribbean who were invited as BRITISH subjects to help rebuild Britain post WW2. Upon arrival they were met with hostility, and that hostile continued for many of them facing racism and discrimination, and being denied rights. Nowadays it’s hard to mention the name Windrush without it preceding the word ‘scandal’. It’s painful to think of all those who have suffered in the hands of the British government, with some losing their livelihoods, being taken from everyone they knew and deported to places they were not familiar with. For some of the victims, the stress of this caused health problems which led to the loss of life. A compensation fund has been created but a tiny percentage has been paid. Many still await justice. The artworks featured in the post are by @thehoneyeffect and illustrate some of the struggles that the Windrush generation and the generations after them have had to endure throughout the decades. These works were originally commissioned by @leftlionmagazine for their Windrush special 2 years ago, and the first one is featured on the front cover of Journeys to Nottingham by @nottinghamblackarchive that features a collections of narratives and photographs from people who travelled from the Caribbean to Nottingham during the Windrush era. Copies were being sold at @new_art_exchange. I will place a link in my bio to the drama ‘Sitting in Limbo’ which premiered on the BBC a few weeks ago about one of the victims of the scandal. I’ll also include the link to Nottingham Black Archive’s website and @thehoneyeffect’s Etsy store where you can purchase prints of the work featured in this post. #windrushgeneration #windrushday2020 #blackbritain #blackwomenartists (at Nottingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBv7YkmF_x4/?igshid=1s4ecmm20qeg9

#WindrushDay coming to help build the uk up after war and now we get told to go back to where you come from “monkey” the mentality that’s still alive today. . . Here’s a true story what happened recently..... once upon a time someone said “why would they put a monkey on the front cover of a magazine “ the end . They came for a new and better life to a place they were promised was the land of milk and honey and now they have to fight for the right to live in the only place they know as home . . Was the invitation to join a new form of slavery?? It’s windrush day and I mean day just like black history month it will be put back in a box for another year before it gets dusted off and paraded next year ... sounds familiar that’s what they used to do to slaves at slave markets parade them .... I know this won’t affect most people so do what people do ignore it because it doesn’t affect your life but for others. . Happy windrush day but I’m not sure happy is the appropriate word . . #windrushday #windrushgeneration #windrushscandal #windrushday2020 #leroydawkins #monkey #magazinecover #empirewindrush #blackpeoplematter #blacklivesmatter #discoverunder5k #discoverunder1k #discoverunder10k #discoverunder2k #milkandhoney (at Windrush Day Lambeth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvCAc7g69U/?igshid=pijp1b59cpdv
