In 1948 the ship Empire Windrush docked in Tilbury carrying the first group of around 800 passengers from the Caribbean. The passengers had been granted British Citizenship, without restriction, in the 1948 British Nationality Act and were encouraged to come to Britain to work in the re-building of post war Britain. These migrants became known as the Windrush Generation. Those passengers who did not have accommodation arranged were sent to the former air raid shelters in Clapham and from there to sign on for work at Coldharbour Lane Employment Exchange in Brixton. This location resulted in a large community of Caribbean migrants settling in the Brixton area. The new arrivals found much work to do in transport infrastructure, the new National Health Service and the rebuilding of Britain. Despite facing hardships, discrimination and overt racism most of the settlers from the West Indies made their lives in Britain, working to retirement age. In 1971, when freedom of movement within the Commonwealth was ending, the new Immigration Act gave indefinite leave to remain to all Commonwealth citizens already living in the UK. Then in 2013 the then Home Secretary, Teresa May, introduced the racist 'Hostile Environment' policy, a vicious clamp down on migrants found not to be carrying correct documents, whilst simultaneously making getting the right documents almost impossible. As Teresa May said herself in a complete rejection of natural justice "deport first and hear appeals later'. Many Windrush Generation citizens, now in retirement after a lifetime of living and working here, and many of their offspring who arrived here as young children found themselves targeted, denied health treatment and even deported. Though the Government has had to climb down somewhat the 'Hostile Environment' is still in place as Britain turns its back on all those who have contributed so much to our economy, culture and community. #londonhistory #myattsfield #windrushgeneration #hostileenvironment #blackhistory #brixton #publicart #sculpture #mosaic (at Brixton)

Wine Tours - A Noble Way of Learning All About Wine
Regardless of whether you are a seasoned sommelier or a wine connoisseur who has just started off, wine tours always give you an emphatic exposure to wines of various taste and class.
In the past, wine tours were meant for the elites. But things have changed over time. Even a commoner who is an avid wine steward looking to go for miles to experience the lip-smacking taste of the best red and sparkling wines can take these tours today. These lifetime trips take you to the best of the wineries in the Oz.
The Planning
Tumblr media
Planning is the most crucial chapter when it comes to taking up wine tours. There are so many things to take stock of before you set off for a wine tour with a reputed company.
You need to select the areas that you would like to start with. For instance, if you like to take up wine tours in and around Perth, there are so many reputed wineries to visit. There is Wine Dungeon in Gidgegannup, Edgecombe Brothers and Garbin Estate winery in Middle Swan.
You can also visit St Johns Brook City Cellar Door in Cockburn, Faber Vineyard and Pandemonium Estate in Baskerville.
You must not omit the Darlington Estate Winery in Darlington. Hainault Vineyard and Plume Estate Vineyard in Bickley, Fig Tree Estate and Tyler's Vineyard in Millendon, Due Jolly Winery in Pickering Brook.
Myattsfield Vineyard in Carmel should also feature in your wine tour. Besides, there are quite a few others to choose from. You need to pick up companies and find out the wineries they would take you to, and make the final call accordingly.
The Other Points to Consider
Tumblr media
When you plan such a tour, it is essential to make sure that the bloke who will be at the wheels is a designated one. All said and done you MUST consider the consequences of the person at the wheel getting pissed.
Though you may not thrive for too much drinking and get spiffed, your power judgment might get impaired. That's when the clear thinking of the driver will come into play. The drivers of these tours will never join you while on duty as the DWI charges are devastating in Australia - both financially as well as from the legal point of view.
Doing Adequate Homework
Another ‘must do’ prior to before you take up one of those sought-after wine tasting cruise tours in and around Perth. Before you set your foot on these wineries, do some research that will give you a clear notion about their history, their mode of operations, the way they prepare the wines, and the proportions of the ingredients used.
This will give you a better explanation, as you take the first ‘hit’ of the wine at the tip of your tongue.
So you see, it's not only about selecting the right company for a compelling wine tour. You have your task cut out at your end as well. Be prepared to make the most out of the trip!!

Free Saturday and Sunday 5 – 6 May West Perth
If you feel like heading a little bit farther from the city this weekend, we’ve got good news for you! Bickley Harvest Festival is back for 2018! While there will be plenty of gourmet food and drink for adults, the event organisers haven’t forgotten the kids, too.
The festival hosts an annual scarecrow competition where everyone can build their very own straw friend to raise awareness and funds for Muscular Dystrophy WA. Sunday is the judging day to determine the best scarecrow so be sure to head to Myattsfield Vineyards to see who wins!
Plenty of venues are taking place as part of the festival, including Kanyana Wildlife’s Rehabilitation Centre who are opening the centre to the public for fun activities and to learn about local wildlife. If your family loves native Australian animals, this one is for you!
  3. Bubble Soccer
A quick snap taken by our friends @freoyouth down at the Illuminate Youth Event in Fremantle last weekend! We had a ball! ⚽️ Who else was there too?

#TheMinetLibrary opened in 1890 as a gift from the landowner #WilliamMinet in memory of his recently deceased wife. The building was designed in the Gothic Revival style by #GeorgeHubbard who also designed nearby Longfield Hall. After being partially destroyed in the #Blitz in 1940 the library was rebuilt in 1956 becoming part of the #LambethLibraryService. Like many local libraries it became the target of the #cuts to local Government spending in the 1990's. A vigorous campaign was mounted by local residents to save the library but after many years of fighting various closure threats under increasing budget cuts the library closed in 2015 at the moment a stripped down service is running. Luckily the #LambethLocalHistoryArchive in part of the building remains open and was an important resource for the creation of this #mosaic #artwork. - #lambethcouncil #brixton #myattsfield #publicart #sculpture #eyethornepark (at Brixton)

You have to look closely at the new 'Tangerine Tree' #mosaic column in #myattsfield #brixton to discover many hidden histories of the area. In this detail you can see locally born comedian and entertainer #maxwall . Born Maxwell Lorimer in 1908 at 37 Glenshaw Mansions, just off Brixton Road. Max Wall became an entertainment legend in his sixty year career beginning from Music Hall performer to appearing in Crossroads, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Minder. He will probably be most remembered for his zany character Professor Wallofski. Here is a fascinating look at his roller coaster life and career <http://voices-of-variety.com/max-wall/> (at Brixton)
