For your 2018 Best Animated Feature Oscar consideration
Of the approximately 30 animated features released this year, 26 have been submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration.
The Oscars’ Best Animated Feature category can have up to five films nominated if 16 of the following films have the necessary Los Angeles premiere by the end of this year. Films that do not have a “qualifying run” in Los Angeles theaters are not eligible for an award from the Academy, which is based out of the Southern California city.
Despite many films below that have already met the L.A. requirement, only three nominations will be announced on January 23, 2018, if just 15 or fewer of these films qualify. I am not certain how many films have qualified.
Here are the films currently under consideration:
The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales
Birdboy: The Forgotten Children
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie
Cars 3
Cinderella the Cat
Coco
Despicable Me 3
The Emoji Movie
Ethel & Ernest
Ferdinand
The Girl without Hands
In This Corner of the World
The Lego Batman Movie
The Lego Ninjago Movie
Loving Vincent
Mary and the Witch’s Flower
Moomins and the Winter Wonderland
My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea
Napping Princess
A Silent Voice
Smurfs: The Lost Village
The Star
Sword Art Online: The Movie – Ordinal Scale
Window Horses The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming
While this year is still very much a year of sequels by the larger animation groups, some unique projects also found a spot among the suggested list. In fact, an impressive seven GKIDS-distributed films make the list — contrasted with two films each from Pixar, DreamWorks and Warner Bros.; three from Sony; and just one from Illumination and BlueSky.
The Breadwinner, Cartoon Saloon’s latest project and one of seven GKIDS films this year
Of course, making this list is much simpler than making the actual nomination, and smaller studios must still contend with the threat of the new Oscar voting rules opening the door for an influx of big studio films.
Wondering what other odd rules the Academy imposes on animated projects? Here’s why animated films can’t be nominated for best director.

march 1st, 2017
When I was a kid, I had two fears: never to be able to distinguish right from left and another that I’ve just forgotten.
Yesterday I went to see “Window Horses: The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming” at this animation film festival in town. At the end of it, we were invited to scribble a rating on a scale of zero to ten. I had no idea what number to choose. You know when a book, a film, a song, a spectacle, a painting or even a real live person turns up at what seems to be the most appropriate time in your life? When something — or even the whole thing — about it hits home so closely that you lose all sense of objectivity towards it, whatever its form and content or the way it presents itself out there. Well, that’s what “Window Horses” did to me. Is it a good film, I do not know nor do I care but what I do know is that it certainly found an echo within me and voiced several of my current struggles, questions and fears (regarding the way I am (not) growing, my identity, how lost and puzzled I feel in front of my own family background and the “duality” I was born from, my frustrations, my clumsy spirituality, my writing, even my relationship to my father).
Afterwards I went to eat in a restaurant with my mother. I talked so much last night... About my father, about the past, about religion, about the person I had loved. On the way home, as we were sitting side by side in silent on the bus, I clearly felt regret. I systematically regret speaking, especially about myself. I’d never really noticed this could also apply with my mother. I wanted to take everything back.
Just before sleeping, something crossed my mind. A while ago (it must’ve been at least two years), on another blog and for a very limited period of time, I was exchanging messages with someone named Kyoko. It was most probably during summertime because the most recurrent topic in our short conversations was the moist heat we were both suffering from on different parts of the globe (was she living in New York? maybe). She told me she would be travelling to China to visit some relatives. All my messages started with “Dear Kyoko,” and I believe hers did as well, with my name instead. Then the messages stopped. There was nothing left to say but then, there wasn’t anything much in the first place. It was oddly pleasant while it lasted.
I wonder what Kyoko is doing now. I wonder who Kyoko is.
I still cannot remember that other fear from childhood I was still thinking of just this morning.

There are three locks for a nomination: “Coco,” “The Breadwinner” and “Loving Vincent.” The question is in a very weak year what two films will round out the field. If the branch turned their nose up at the first “Lego Movie” will they really embrace “The Lego Batman Movie”? “Ferdinand” was incredibly late to the party, but could it sneak in? [Posted Jan. 1]

Several of the films have yet to complete their required Los Angeles qualifying run.
This matters because, depending on the number of films that qualify, two to five nominees will be selected. Sixteen or more films must qualify for the maximum of five nominees to be voted.

By Gregory Ellwood
(The Playlist) -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 26 films submitted this year for consideration for the Animated Feature Film Oscar this morning and there were few surprises on this list.
Notably absent, however, was “Leap!” a animated film produced in France where it was known as “Ballerina” but released in the U.S. this August with vocal performances by Elle Fanning, Carly Rae Jepsen and Dane DeHaan, among others. It grossed $105 million worldwide, but clearly the current scandal surrounding its distributor, The Weinstein Company, affected its submission.
In a rule change this year, all members of the Academy are allowed to vote in the nominating process for this category. Whether that means more commercial fare such as “The Lego Batman Movie,” “The Boss Baby” or “Ferdinand” make the cut remains to be seen. Pixar’s “Coco” is the expected frontrunner to take the Oscar by a mile.
The contenders are as follows:
“The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales” “Birdboy: The Forgotten Children” “The Boss Baby” “The Breadwinner” “Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie” “Cars 3” “Cinderella the Cat” “Coco” “Despicable Me 3” “The Emoji Movie” “Ethel & Ernest” “Ferdinand” “The Girl without Hands” “In This Corner of the World” “The Lego Batman Movie” “The Lego Ninjago Movie” “Loving Vincent” “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” “Moomins and the Winter Wonderland” “My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea” “Napping Princess” “A Silent Voice” “Smurfs: The Lost Village” “The Star” “Sword Art Online: The Movie – Ordinal Scale” “Window Horses The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming”
#90th Academy Awards#Oscars#Best Animated Feature#why did Sony even bother submitting The Emoji Movie? seriously why?#this blogger is hoping the lineup is: 1) Breadwinner 2) Coco 3) In This Corner... 4) Mary..
