Have you ever considered for doing a fic of a double date? Any ships you want!
Haven’t written for McHanzo or Symmarah for a while, and I’ve always wanted to develop Hanzo and Symmetra’s rapport in my fics more.
——-
“…Why?” said Hanzo, watching McCree straighten his collar in the mirror.
“No one ever has to justify wearing a bolo tie,” said McCree, tucking his shirt in.
“You know that’s not what I mean. Why are we doing this?” said Hanzo.
“Civvy night’s important to Pharah,” said McCree, “And Pharah’s important to me. I’ve known her since she was a skinny little scamp about yea high.” He brought a hand halfway up his ribs, “Anyway we need stuff like this. We’re fighting a long fight.”
Hanzo adjusted his own dark blue blazer that he was wearing over a tasteful yellow v-neck shirt, a result of an afternoon ‘thrifting’ with Tracer and Brigitte. That whole excursion was utterly baffling to him until Tracer offhandedly mentioned Genji and Hanzo had immediately realized that it was Genji who had suggested they invite him along in yet another attempt to try and ingratiate him to the rest of the Watchpoint. He had confronted Genji about it, but Genji had more or less played it off with, ‘I just thought you should get some new clothes since you’re staying with us’  which, infuriatingly, was true, but there was something sickening about the idea of Genji running around the watchpoint asking people to hang out with his poor lonely brother who murdered him. If it wasn’t thrifting with Brigitte and Tracer, it was morning jogs with Reinhardt, or Winston’s movie night—even Mercy had managed to stuff down her dislike of him enough to invite him along to her book club. Book clubs! What kind of illegal splinter organization had book clubs?! And for the record, no, he wasn’t willing to discuss the fact that Where the Crawdads Sing had made him cry.
“Hey—You in there, darlin’?” said McCree and Hanzo suddenly snapped back to the present.
Hanzo glanced down a bit self consciously, picking a stray bit of lint off of his blazer. “Did you plan this with Genji?” he asked.
“Nah—this is me and Pharah dragging you and Satya along in a night of shenanigans. Y’know, balancing out the friend stuff with the couple-y stuff.”
“…you would consider us as close as Fareeha and Satya?” said Hanzo arching an eyebrow.
“I mean…” McCree scratched at his stubble, unsure of how to respond to that and Hanzo realized what he had just said could be taken in a more hurtful way than he intended.
“That wasn’t what I— I mean I do lo—like you. You are important to me. They just… seem more… established.”
“Hey— it’s not like we’re going to be aggressively making out next to each other—we’re just hanging out,” said McCree. Hanzo was quiet, glancing down. McCree put a hand on his shoulder. “Look, if you’re really not comfortable with it, we can call the whole thing off. But, on the other hand, Fareeha’s one of the coolest people I know. This isn’t Genji trying to get you buddy-buddy with the watchpoint, this is me hoping we can all hang.” McCree thought for a moment, “Plus… Symmetra’s all… classy and stuff—She never really took to me, so maybe she might take to you. But again—I can call the whole thing—”
“Fine,” said Hanzo.
McCree smiled and kissed his eyebrow. “You won’t regret it.”
“Mm,” Hanzo grunted in response, not really sure what he just agreed to as both of them walked out of the apartment.
“Well well well… look who the cat dragged in,” a voice called up from below and McCree looked down over the balcony of the admin apartments to see Pharah standing in the lot below in a leather jacket and aviator sunglasses.
“You got a lotta nerve showing your face back here, Amari!” McCree fired back.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve wearing a bolo tie!” said Pharah.
“I don’t have to justify myself to you!” said McCree, “RAAAAHH!!!” he practically vaulted down the stairs and Pharah bounded up to meet him.
“YAAAAAAAH!” She caught him around the waist and hoisted him terrifyingly easily up on her shoulder.
“Jes-US ‘Reeha what have you been eating?” said McCree, the wind half-knocked out of him from the lift.
“More protein than you, I can tell you that much,” said Pharah, planting McCree back down on the ground. They bumped fists and then took each other up in a one armed hug. “It’s been too long, cowboy,” said Pharah, before looking over to Hanzo, “Hey! We uh… haven’t talked much, but anyone who can put up with Jesse is all right with me,” she held her fist out
“I’m told you were among the first to answer the recall,” said Hanzo. He glanced down at her still extended fist and nearly moved to shake her hand, then had to consciously make his own hand a fist to bump hers. The delay was clumsy, awkward. Stupid, he thought.
“Ha, yeah, Overwatch brat with something to prove,” said Pharah, tucking her beaded braids of hair back, “But no missions tonight! It’s civvy night!”
“Civvy night!” said McCree, “Speaking of which… where’s Our Lady Of Geometry?”
“Oh, Satya’s gonna be here, trust me,” said Pharah, “Come on.”
She started walking briskly and McCree and Hanzo followed after her. McCree glanced over at Hanzo, who was glancing off with a furrowed brow. Hanzo felt something brush against his hand and glanced down to see the pinkie of McCree’s prosthetic extended to him, touching his knuckles. Hanzo wrapped his fingers around McCree’s prosthetic and looked up at him. When all was said and done, McCree did look good with a bolo tie. There was an odd comfort in that.
“Okay,” Pharah was walking backward towards the Watchpoint hangar, “I just want you guys to… keep an open mind, okay?”
“An open mind?” said Hanzo, arching an eyebrow.
“Well usually for civvy night we just go out for snacks and bar food—that kind of stuff—and I know usually the point of civvy night is getting away from the watchpoint but Satya wanted to try something new, so…” Pharah opened the door and both McCree and Hanzo’s eyes widened. The entire hangar was a wonderland of blue and white, filled with hard-light structures of miniature castles, sphinxes and pyramids, a miniature mountain with a sparkling waterfall and a dragon perched atop it, windmills, and an impressively big construct of a diplodocus moving its massive neck up and down. A layer of hard-light was stretched across the floor, levels shifting slightly with holes placed at various points near the fantastical constructs of castles and dinosaurs and windmills.
“Mini-golf?!” McCree blurted out.
“It was an interesting challenge,” a voice spoke behind them and both McCree and Hanzo whirled on their heels to see Symmetra in a high-waisted white skirt and sky-blue polo, leaning against the wall behind them, “But I haven’t had an interesting challenge in a while. The visual research, while…. incredibly tacky, was uniquely inspiring. And it’s not often that I have to run simulations as extensively as I did here. I even had to bring in outside consultation.”
“Outside consultation?” said Hanzo.
“Jack Morrison was surprisingly helpful,” said Satya.
“Jack,” McCree repeated incredulously, “You got Jack to help you plan a mini-golf course.”
“He was quite amenable to the concept if it came with the promise of customized putting constructs in his own quarters,” said Satya.
McCree looked back out at the pyramids and castles and the diplodocus slowly moving its neck up and down.
“Not that I need your approval, but…. I wouldn’t say I had a stick up my posterior now, would I?” said Symmetra, sidling up alongside him.
“I never said you had a stick up your—“ McCree caught himself and realized he had said something along those lines, only he hadn’t used the word ‘posterior.’
“Satya this is—-“ McCree took his hat off and ran his fingers through his hair, at a loss for words, “This is honestly amazing. Thank you. You didn’t have to do all this—“
“I know,” said Satya, smugly, “But,” she materialized a putter out of hard-light in her hands, “What you may not realize about me is that I enjoy a challenge.” Hanzo glanced over at Pharah who was also grinning at this. Satya held the putter out to McCree and McCree took it.
“And bowling was out,” said Pharah, catching another putter as Satya tossed it to her. Satya handed the final putter to Hanzo.
“…I’m… not very well-practiced in golf,” said Hanzo, looking around at the constructs, still perplexed
“Well that’s the good thing about mini-golf—less rich people bullshit, less pressure… and everything’s kind of kitschy so you don’t take yourself as seriously,” said McCree, testing the weight of his own putter in his hands.
“I thought it would be appropriate with your focus on… accuracy?” Satya offered, “And it’s tackiness I thought would fit Jesse quite nicely.”
“Ouch,” said McCree, but Pharah just snickered and elbowed him.
“Rules are simple, try to get it into the hole with as few strokes as possible–lowest score wins,” said Pharah, shouldering her own putter.
“I understand the basic concepts of golf,” said Hanzo, flatly before catching himself. He cleared his throat. “Very well. I accept this challenge.”
Satya materialized a hovering screen with a grid featuring all their names in neat little boxes, “I do always say, ‘what game is complete without a grid?,’” she said, smiling.
“Of course you would,” said Pharah and Satya’s smile turned wry.
“Waaaaait a second, if the balls are constructs, too, how do we know you won’t cheat?” said McCree.
“You don’t,” said Satya.
“It’ll give you an excuse when we wipe the floor with you?” suggested Pharah.
“Good enough for me,” said McCree, “More fun than a bar night, anyway.”
“Oh! That reminds me!” said Pharah, hurrying off before coming back lugging a large cooler over loaded with ice and bottles of beer, as well as a few cans of sparkling water for anyone who didn’t drink (namely Satya—not a fan of the taste, apparently). McCree cracked open a bottle with his lighter and handed it to Hanzo before opening one himself.
“McCree can I get that lighter—” Pharah started.
“Here, my light,” said Satya, materializing a bottle opener for her out of hard-light, and Pharah kissed her on the temple in a thank you as she opened her own bottle.
Hanzo sipped at his own beer. He could enjoy beer, but tended to prefer sake. With sake there was a sense of ritual to it, with beer, there was a sort of implicit feeling of having to be social, as well as some stinging nostalgia over his great uncle Hideyoshi.
“Heh, and Satya calls me tacky,” said McCree as he and Hanzo watched Pharah help Satya adjust her golf stance, practically hugging her from behind.
Hanzo forced a chuckling “hm,” before sipping his own beer. This isn’t Genji pushing the Watchpoint to put up with you, he thought, This is just Jesse wanting to have fun. You can have fun. You can… deal with people.
“Hanzo?” said Satya, “Your turn.”
“Oh— you can…Fareeha can go next.”
Satya just shrugged and rearranged the order of their names on the grid, putting him below Pharah as Pharah putted next. Despite helping Satya with her own stance, it actually took Pharah several tries to get the ball close to the hole, and by the time she had the ball a few inches from the hole, McCree blurted out “GOOD LUCK!” and Pharah ended up hitting the ball too hard and they all watched as it bounced over the hole and hit the blue bricks of the retaining wall.
“Ass,” said Pharah, finally putting the ball into the hole and McCree just shrugged, grinning.
“All you,” said McCree, putting a hand on Hanzo’s shoulder.
“You—you should go,” said Hanzo.
“‘Kay then,” said McCree. It turned out he was almost as bad as Pharah, and it didn’t help that Pharah made a point of getting him back throwing her off of her own putt by going “Hey Jesse!” every time his putter made contact with the ball. He managed to sink the ball with only two more strokes than Pharah.
All the while Hanzo studied their stances, how they gripped the putters, how hard they tapped the ball, and managed to sink his own ball in only two strokes.
“…damn,” said McCree, “Thought you said you weren’t big on golf?”
“Well it’s… fairly intuitive,” said Hanzo.
The pyramids were next. “Awww… you made little me’s!” said Pharah, bending over the hard-light structures of the statues around the pyramids.
“I simply modeled them on the statues at the temple of Anubis,” said Satya.
“Oh,” said Pharah.
“That was a joke, they are you,” said Satya.
“Awww!” said Pharah again.
The Windmilll proved to be the bane of McCree’s existence. Satya and Hanzo watched as he muttered to himself, making stroke after stroke only to have the windmill’s arms knock them away while Pharah heckled him.
“I’m not cheating, if you’re wondering,” said Satya and it caught Hanzo off-guard to realize she was talking to him, “The speed of those windmill arms is perfectly consistent.”
“I didn’t think you were cheating,” said Hanzo, “It doesn’t seem in your nature.”
“Thank you,” said Satya. A pause passed between them. “I hope this all doesn’t seem too silly to you,” she said.
“There’s a giant glowing dinosaur in a watchpoint hangar, what could be silly about that?” said Hanzo as McCree finally sank his ball.
“I… actually was looking forward to this. We haven’t spoken much yet—” said Satya.
“So people keep saying to me,” said Hanzo.
The corner of Satya’s mouth twitched and Hanzo realized he had cut her off. He opened his mouth to apologize but was cut off by McCree teasing Pharah as she putted. “I…sorry. Please continue.”
Satya’s eyes lit up. “Well, it always tended to be difficult for me to initiate things with other people,” she went on, “Fareeha said ‘Civvy night’ was her idea so that she could touch base with other teammates… but I can’t help thinking she also came up with it to help me get to know the others.”
Hanzo’s brow crinkled. “And that doesn’t bother you?”
“Why would—” Satya started.
“Satya, your turn!” Pharah called.
“Duty calls,” said Satya as she made her own putt. It actually took her a few tries, though not as many as McCree.
Hanzo snorted a little before moving forward with his own putter. He remembered what Satya said about the arms of the windmill, studied the construct for a few seconds, furrowed his brow, and then made his stroke. Pharah and McCree were still bickering and teasing each other but both quickly fell silent as the little ball easily rolled up the slope, past the waving arms of the windmill, and planted itself neatly in the hole on the other side.
“A hole in one?!” said Pharah.
“Impressive!” said Satya.
“Holy shit, Han!” said McCree, slapping him on the back.
“Yes… well…it’s… just a matter of timing,” said Hanzo, smiling a little as they moved on to the next hole. Once again, it took a while to get through both Pharah and McCree’s rounds with all the heckling they gave each other.
“You said you were looking forward to speaking with me,” said Hanzo as they watched Pharah attempt to get the ball up the miniature mountain, “Why?”
“Well… I feel you are in a similar position as I was when I first joined,” said Satya.
“How so?” said Hanzo.
“Well… prior to my joining, the most basis anyone had for my character was Lúcio. And he was, justifiably, not fond of me,” she tucked her hair back, “And, of course, everyone on this watchpoint is eclectic enough to make their own decisions, but when the one person everyone seems to like doesn’t like you, well…” she shrugged, “Let’s just say I was eating a lot of meals alone during my first few weeks here. There was Zenyatta, of course, but arguably, Zenyatta makes a point of that sort of thing so...” she trailed off.
Hanzo wasn’t sure he liked where this conversation was going.
“And I like to think we have similar tastes,” said Satya, apparently noting his discomfort and switching gears.
“…similar tastes?” said Hanzo and Satya just motioned with her head over at Pharah with McCree’s head in a headlock, giving him noogies and going “YOU WANT A MULLIGAN? I GOT YOUR MULLIGAN RIGHT HERE!”
Hanzo snorted. “I suppose they’re making up for all the lost stupidity with all the missions they’ve had,” he said with a smirk. Satya silently and easily made her hole in a few putts as McCree and Pharah headed off to get another round of drinks for everyone.
“What did you mean earlier?” said Satya, coming back to Hanzo as he made his own putt.
“What?” said Hanzo.
“When you said ‘that doesn’t bother you?’ Why would it bother me?”
“It’s… it’s embarrassing. It’s… pitying you,” said Hanzo.
“You think Pharah introducing me to her friends is pitying me,” Satya said flatly.
Hanzo’s stomach tied up in knots. “No–It’s–It’s different for you. Before you joined the team you built things. You created. Sure, it was for an… evil corporation, but you weren’t… we are not the same.”
“You’re moving the goal posts,” said Satya.
“What?”
“Moving the goal posts. You relate to me when you think I’m being pitied or treated like a child by my partner, but when I’m able to rationally say, ‘No, it is not like that’ then suddenly we are not the same.”
Hanzo blinked a few times.
“It’s not pity, Hanzo Shimada, it’s empathy,” Satya went on, “You don’t think everyone else here has been lonely? I was lonely in Vishkar. I was lonely when I first came here. Pharah was estranged from her mother for years, McCree was wandering with a bounty on his head—” Satya sighed, “It’s… it’s terrifyingly easy to convince yourself that no one needs you when you’re alone. And it takes a lot of strength to bring yourself back. To cultivate relationships so you can center yourself. And sometimes you fall back, and that’s fine. I didn’t make it to the book club this month because I didn’t want to talk about how the book made me cry. But as long as you keep putting yourself out there–”
“You’re in the book club?”
“Yes.”
“Where the Crawdads Sing made you cry?”
“Yes.”
“…why is there a Watchpoint book club?”
“Long Orca rides.”
“…I hate how much sense that makes,” said Hanzo, “It made me cry, too.”
Satya just huffed and smiled. “Make your putt, Shimada.”
Hanzo stepped forward, placed his ball, drew in a steadying breath, and then with a single tap sent the ball rolling up through the castle, the little drawbridge closing behind it and a little fanfare playing. Both Hanzo and Satya rounded the castle and watched as the ball rolled out the other side and plopped neatly into the hole. The fanfare played again and little firework-like lights shot off from the castle’s parapets in miniature starbursts.
“…have I mentioned your work here was brilliant?” said Hanzo.
“You could stand to mention it more,” said Satya, arching an eyebrow.
“Have you been keeping score?”
“Oh honestly you won two holes ago, even if all three of us got holes in one for the rest of the course there’s no chance of beating you.”
“…Ah.”
“Shall we move on to the dinosaur?”
“It is a good dinosaur.”
“Told ya they’d hit it off,” said McCree as he and Pharah headed back from the cooler.
“You told me? I believe I invented civvy night,” said Pharah, “All you did was hook up with your probation charge.”
“Which makes me a certified genius. You just call it civvy night because calling it a double date is cheesy,” said McCree.
“It’s called civvy night so there’s no pressure to bring a date,” Pharah frowned as her ball popped over the hole and rolled out the other side, “Still trying to get Mei to come along.”
“God, someone needs to get her away from that lab,” muttered McCree.
“Right? But then again… 9 years asleep. Makes you feel pretty far behind on work.”
“Pretty far behind on partyin’ too,” said McCree, closing the distance between himself and Hanzo, “You guys down for another round?”
Satya smirked as Pharah handed her her drink. “But of course,” she said.

The Luxury of Staying Connected with Nature at Alpine Villas
Some people may say that one of the benefits of living in a house is that you can enjoy more outdoor living space. However, others place more value on location and would sacrifice outdoor space for the convenience and thrill of living in a prestigious area.
But what if you don’t have to choose between an outdoor space and a prestigious location? Imagine having spacious rooms opening out to gardens, sun-lit decks, and terraces, swimming pools, private parks ending in a charming pergola, and having a cup of coffee on your balcony while enjoying a beautiful nature escape view of marvelously rolling hills and lush pine trees.
Nestled in nature and founded on an interplay between built and open spaces, Alpine Villas gives residents a rare living experience right in the heart of Crosswinds in Tagaytay.
Your Swiss Inspired Community
Inspired by the most beautiful Swiss villages, the 2.8-hectare Alpine Villas consist of mid-rise residential towers in the style of Swiss chalets that are surrounded by charming European-inspired cafes and restaurants. Its first three towers, Bernese, Blanc, and Brienz, are situated 540 meters above sea level and command an excellent view of Crosswinds Tagaytay’ exclusive community, lush green foliage of pine trees, open green spaces, and the commercial strip.
Set amidst 35,000 pine trees, Alpine Villas is a gathering of mid-rise residential towers that complement the privacy, tranquility, harmony, and luxury that residents seek in an area that is close to the city—a rare sight and experience for those who deserve nothing but the best.
Completing the first row of the Alpine Villas luxury condo development is Biel. This 9-story condominium tower offers 58 units with a mix of studio and one-bedroom with balconies with sizes ranging between 30 to 90 sqm.
BIEL’S UNIQUE CONCEPT
Inspired by bathing one’s senses in the forest atmosphere, Biel promotes the idea of slowing down, practicing mindfulness, and reconnecting with nature.
Many of us know the feeling of peacefulness when we interact with nature; Brittany Corporation, the luxury residential arm of the country’s largest homebuilder, Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc., recognizes the positive impact of staying connected with nature and the importance of being connected to the world around us.
Whether going for a bushwalk, staying outdoors, or consciously tuning in with birds, plants, and trees in a natural setting, experiences such as these can improve one’s mental health and well-being.
NATURE-INSPIRED DESIGN, SETTING, AND AMENITIES
Biel is built on the principles of nature-inspired, sustainable design, which is set to reflect Crosswinds Tagaytay’ natural beauty, incorporating the elements of wood and other natural materials. Thirty percent of the condominium development is also dedicated to green open spaces, which goes without saying; the lush pine trees and the majestic view of nature calm and de-stress you even before you go in.
Biel best represents Brittany’s prime development as it offers bigger unit sizes, more open spaces, and upgraded features. Staying connected to nature is easier than ever at Alpine Villas. All the floor plans provide balconies that offer a stunning view of the pine forest.
Transforming one’s balcony into a relaxing outdoor space allows you to get fresh air and expands the living spaces beyond the inside walls. Biel also commands the best view of the exclusive Crosswinds Tagaytay community, with units facing the morning sun on the southeast side of the building.
Proximity to lifestyle hotspots
Its proximity to lifestyle hotspots within Crosswinds Tagaytay, such as Ruined Project, Napa, Cafe Voila, and Coffee Project, allows residents to enjoy a short walk to the commercial stretch in just around five minutes. Biel is also just a kilometer away from Crosswinds’ unique retail concepts and new attractions such as Windmill Lausanne, Cafe Yama, Dear Joe, and Andersen’s Bakery.
Biel will also offer an impressive list of amenities focused on increasing the residents’ sense of well-being, such as well-designed, space-efficient vertical residences with a mix of one- and two-bedroom balconies and 24/7 safety protocols, including a CCTV system in all common areas and Wi-Fi.
The units were also designed with versatility in mind, allowing the residents to create additional space and have more flexibility. Each unit at Biel presents an open canvas for residents to customize their living spaces, allowing them to plan every corner of the unit according to their taste and style.
A complete ecosystem, Biel will offer passive and active spaces such as tranquility gardens, private parks, kids’ outdoor play area, a pet park, biking, and jogging trails, a straightforward exercise room, a curated gym, and a function hall.
In Alpine Villas, it is possible to experience the luxury of staying connected with nature and enjoying the abundance of space and privacy while living in your exclusive place.

Palm Springs | 01.20.2018 (Day 1) Pt. 3
Tumblr media
Harley Davidson motors produce a very mechanical sound. It’s a deep and throaty cough with a ‘chug-a-chug-a – chug-a-chug-a – chug-a-chug-a’ cadence. Off the line[1], they growl in the lower RPMs and ramp up to a roar. But once you get them on the highway, and up to speed, they run at a constant purr. That’s how my bike sounds right now. Rolling over the smooth pavement of Interstate 10, I can hone in on the engine noise. My 883 cc motor is made for speed – at short distances. Once you get her over 80 mph, she shakes more than an anxious chihuahua. Road tripping with my bike is like signing up a sprinter for a marathon. But at a steady 75 mph, Michelle and I are able to relax for the final leg. The stability of sub-80 mph allows me to compensate for the road up ahead: windmill country.
Tumblr media
The San Gorgonio Pass contains over 3,000 windmills. And for good reason. Winds rip through this region regularly. In previous rides, I’ve nearly been lifted off my bike by headwinds. Fortunately, the additional weight packed onto the bike helps battle the winds and we glide onto Route 62 without incident.
Less than 10 miles down this lonely backroad, our campground awaits. Highways like this are perfect for picking up speed. Flat, vacant, smooth. I pop the bike into 5th and pull the throttle back. The needle on the speedo[2] climbs. 80. 85. 90. 95…100.
Whenever someone asks me what it’s like to hit 100 mph I deliver a very anticlimactic response: “You can’t really tell the difference.” The only places you can safely reach 100+ mph are on empty country roads. Out here, it’s desolate, meaning safer conditions for riding. On the other hand, there are fewer points of reference for you to gauge your speed. Truth be told, with buildings flying by at 60 mph in the city, you feel like you’re going faster.
We roll into the campground right at noon. After checking in, we ease the bike into our spot and dismount. In the dead of winter, most of the sites are vacant. A plus for space but a minus for peace of mind. There’s always a ‘safety in numbers’ mindset when you’re out in the wilderness. Gravel covers the entirety of the lot with soft rubber pebbles designating the tent area. A wooden picnic table sits at the center and trees line the west side of the grounds, providing limited refuge from the swirling winds.
Tumblr media
This is Michelle’s second time camping – EVER! On our first trip, I took her to a beachfront site that was literally steps from a neighborhood supermarket. Far from remote. My goal is to gradually introduce her to more primitive accommodations and this campground is the perfect next step. Removed from civilization but chockful of amenities (pool, hot tubs, showers, laundry mat, etc.). We unload and begin pitching the tent. She’s particularly taken with hammering the stakes into the dirt, which is imperative in these blustery conditions. One strong gust against the broadside of the tent could send you rolling down the drive like a hamster in a ball.
Tumblr media
After we remove the rest of the gear from the Harley and lay out our sleeping arrangements, we depart for Palm Springs. With reservations for ATV rentals in the afternoon, we want to sneak in as much time as possible before sunset.
On our way into town, the land flattens and the trees disappear. Winds out here pick up sand, and in this open environment, we’re vulnerable. Off the roadside, a sign announces ‘DRIFTING SAND’ and I take it lightly. But as we descend the overpass, a gust hits us obliquely from the right. I can feel the wind push at the rear of my ribs. Wind-blown sand hitting the shell of your helmet sounds like a sizzling frying pan. Gust. Sizzle. Gust. Sizzle. The winds are so strong that I’m struggling to keep my line[3]. The front tire veers to the left and into the other lane. As we approach the shoulder, I lean to my right, against the wind. In normal conditions, this would force the bike to turn right. Steering a motorcycle is done more with your body and less with the hands. Some racing schools even lock the handlebars in place so their trainees are forced to lean into turns instead. In order to counteract the effects of the crosswinds, I hang off the side of my bike at 45°. My body position looks like I’m turning, but the bike is continuing straight. Once we reach the suburban neighborhoods of Palm Springs, I can ride in my normal position again. Houses and small businesses break up the wind and protect the inner community from the open desert.
While in town, we grab a quick bite to eat before peeling off the main road and onto Route 111.
We arrive at Off-Road Rentals in good time. The crunch of gravel under my tires tells me that I should pull straight into a spot. With my street tires, maneuverability is sacrificed on loose surfaces.
Tumblr media
We hop out of the saddle and stride to the entrance. A collection of discarded Jeep Wranglers, motorcycles, and train cars decorate the grounds like a vehicular graveyard. To our right, old tires outline the boundaries of the windswept off-road course.
Tumblr media
After a safety video, Michelle and I are led to our Honda TRX 90s. I throw my leg over and sink into the seat.
“Ooh, comfy,” she remarks.
I nod in agreement.
Motorcycles and ATVs share a lot of the same DNA (handlebars, riding position, manual transmission, etc.), but ATVs are very different in 2 departments: stability and suspension. The support of 4 wheels is irreplaceable. On a bike, the rider’s balance and core strength keep the vehicle upright. That’s not the case with ATVs. While you need strength and balance to control the rig, the margin of error isn’t as high, so I’m already feeling comfortable. As for the suspension, these vehicles are made to handle the toughest of terrain so the shocks really buffer your rear end from the road. Unlike street bikes, where you can feel some potholes rattle your skull. A suspension as soft as this ATV’s would sacrifice handling and stability, so I’m making sure I soak in the comfort while I can.
Tumblr media
Following a quick tutorial from the instructors, we’re off. The course is wide and rugged, but Michelle prefers to learn the ropes away from the pack. We retreat to the practice course on the backside of the facility. From the time that Michelle first jumped on the back of my Harley, she’s toyed with the possibility of owning a bike. We’ve come to an unofficial agreement that she would use my motorcycle to practice for the rider’s test. But as we roam around the practice course, I have second thoughts. When I slip off and whip around the track, Michelle is left acclimating herself with the controls. By the time I come back, her ATV’s mounted on an out of bounds tire.
“What happened?” I ask.
“I’m getting used to the steering,” she explains.
To be fair, these Hondas are tiny. With such a cramped riding position, it isn’t easy to get your knee out of the way of the handlebars. I lift, the ATV off the obstacle and she jumps back on. Once I pull off again, she gives it another go. I shoot over bunny hills, slide through some banked turns, and do a few figure eights before returning to Michelle – stuck in a ditch again.
“What happened now?”
“You know in Mario-Kart when you hit one side and overcorrect?” she says, “That’s what I did.”
By now, I’m growing skeptical. “If she’s having this much of a problem on 4 wheels how’s she going to do on 2?” I think to myself.
“Let’s go to the bigger course,” she proposes, “I think I need more room.”
As we ride to the main track, I think back to my first days on a motorbike. I’d be lying if I said I was a natural. Riding a bike for the first time isn’t easy if you’re not used to a manual transmission. I’ve stalled numerous times, both practicing in a parking lot and on city streets. When you’re learning to ride, it also takes some time to adjust to the braking. There’s a rear brake that you control with your foot and a front brake that rests under your right hand. During my training, there were several times I almost flew over the handlebars by clenching the brake lever too hard. Just like a bicycle, when you gain speed you gain balance. But when trying to maneuver a 540 lb. bike at low speeds, balance is the first thing to go. With a bike that weights three times as much as you, you’re going to drop her from time to time. I’ve downed her in the middle of a four-way stop, in front of work and outside a crowded restaurant. After each spill, I collected the bike (and bruised dignity), jumped back on, and gave it another go.
Michelle’s operating the ATV with more confidence now. Well, I can’t really speak for her confidence, but she hasn’t hit any other tires so far. She’s climbing hills, banking into turns and riding along the face of an incline. I have to remind myself that it takes time to develop these skills and if I can do it, so can she.
Once the sun falls below the mountain ridge the supervisors call in all the riders. I do a few last donuts in the bowl and reconvene with Michelle.
“That was fun,” she exclaims.
“I know. You improved,” I respond.
“Did you see me go up that hill?”
I nod and smile as we fall into single file and park the vehicles along a storage shed.
Before we leave we make use of the unique scenery:

The ride back to the campsite is windy but uneventful (luckily). We jump in the hot tub and recuperate from the long day of motorsports. After journeys like this, you try to turn in early. We traveled to Palm Springs for a bike show tomorrow so the morning only has more in store.

11.18.2017 ~ I am my Own Self, Hear me (expl)ROAR!
To start with: I have changed my writing location. Previously, all of my blogs were written from the comfort and warmth of my bed, where I could unabashedly take my time lopping words into paragraphs to update the people back home. Today, on the eighteenth of November, in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Seventeen, I have chosen to write from within the aromatic and hazy haven of Yogurt Barn. Nothing short of my personal favorite location within the city, this little yogurt shop/café has been the subject of some of my absolute cutest and most “aesthetic” photos I’ve taken so far. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like it doesn’t deserve to be appreciated, but I know many of you are thinking: “come on Marissa, you couldn’t find a better place to religiously spend your money?” The answer is no, I couldn’t—I pick favorites and I hold onto them tight for fear of, well, who knows actually.
Anyway, you guys probably want to get to the part where I tell you what I’ve been up to since my last post three and a half weeks ago! I am so sorry for being gone so long but when you hear what I’ve been up to, maybe you can forgive me? First thing to note, now that I’m finally telling you about the things I’ve been up to, is that I’m not trying too hard to go in chronological order because, honestly, when I get home I’ll just be spouting information and stories, rather than walking you through my itinerary.
Okay, lets jump in: I got a new tattoo and a haircut within the same two-week window and I am loving this pseudo-reinvention of myself while being abroad. The tattoo is a beautiful daisy and accompanying sprig of leaves on my inner right arm. The haircut is a straight bob with an undercut (where they shave the underside of your hair, while leaving the top layers like normal). I’ll admit: I feel kind of like a badass with this look, which I need for a bit of moral pep during the last few weeks before heading home. The tattoo parlor I went to is the oldest within the city and the gentlemen there were very nice and were able to set up an appointment within the same week that I went in for a consultation. The cost was the price of expertise and materials and a beautiful tattoo, so I’d say it was worth it.
           {Here’s my two cents, for all those that don’t quite understand or agree with the choice to get tattoos: my tattoos are mementos, reminders. My favorite part of this city is the constant display and arrangement of flowers that add color and life to city. Yes, there are colorful people and colorful buildings, but the connection with nature will never go underappreciated within my own mind. I have photos of these flowers and the scenes that made me smile but the mentality of having living things, or a tattoo of a living thing, on my body makes me much happier because I am a part of those things that live and grow and die and return after their death. Also: my body is mine and I am the only one who has a say in what happens to it. The end.}
Moving on! My haircut was quite the adventure because I got it done for free during student exam/lessons for Toni&Guy salon, which is actually right across the square from my beloved Yogurt Barn. The whole experience took about two hours, in which the teacher gave quite the sass-attack to some of the students, and I realized the girl cutting my hair was really good, but so anxious about creating an irreversible mistake on my hair. I reassured her that hair grows and honestly, just do what you’re comfortable with—and that kind of bit me back in the long run because, to be honest dear reader, I was not entirely pleased with my haircut when I walked about of the salon. They gave me a center part and the undercut was a triangle, rather than a flat shave like I wanted, but fear not! I have grown to love it, and I can part it however I want, obviously. My wise and clearly-much-smarter-than-I friend, Kelly, called me out and told me to stop being a wuss and just tell people what I want when I go into a service industry. She’s totally right. I am a wuss. I don’t like to inconvenience people or to cause unnecessary stress if I don’t have to: it’s much easier to stay quiet and remember that, in this case, hair grows.
Also, fun fact, The Netherlands isn’t as huge into Halloween as America is (we tend to be excessive about everything) but our neighborhood is full of expats and so we attended the cutest little coordinated trick-or-treat festivities all day and collected a non-chocolate centered candy haul after running around after a little blue dinosaur (Emilio’s costume), and I was busy being an obnoxious adult who cared too much about Halloween as I dressed up like Harry Potter.
On to the next adventure! For three blissful days, my friend from home came to visit and we tore up Amsterdam and had the most fun I’ve had in years. A three hour walking tour lead by a naturally sociable guide led to an amusing and educational tour of the inner city of Amsterdam, including the Red Light District and some of the canals—and a café/bar with a cat! (my friend and I love cats, so this was a potential highlight on the “unexpected” list). After our tour we toured the Van Gogh Museum and I fell in love with an artist that I had already adored from afar back in my Art History classes at St. Mary’s. Along with the wonderful artwork, we also discovered that audio tours within museums are completely worth the extra charge if you want to feel more immersed within the works, or if you’re like us, and have someone who’s not entirely sure they’re interested in the artworks that they’re about to spend over an hour looking at. We used audio tours for all of the following museums we went to, including the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, Rembrandt Studio, and Escher in the Palace (we went to a lot of museums, and thank god my friend actually enjoyed some of it, because they’re not really an art person like I am). While they visited, we stayed at an AirBnB and I can confirm that this is my preferred method of staying anywhere now. The comfort of a home with the amenities of a hotel all in one—I’ve started investigating long term stays for my trip to Ireland, but more on that later! Last couple of adventures in Amsterdam included a trip to the Zoo (mainly to see the Red Pandas), a great dinner out at a place called Haesje Claes, and the some time spent wandering around The Hague after two days of running ourselves up a wall to get all our planned activities done. A wonderful weekend with some great photos to commemorate the trip will be surely discussed when I return.
The following weekend, the family and I traveled to Zaandam and went to the clog factory there, which is situated in the cutest little town that has been preserved from it’s factory days into picturesque quaint charm, surrounded by windmills and colored homes, and small shops. Although it rained for most of the time we were there, the atmosphere of the town was something I had been craving during my trip abroad, and something I plan to seek out again before I leave. I did not buy myself a pair of clogs—my mother’s rational voice of “when will you ever actually wear these” was constantly running through my head—but, I did buy a miniature pair that are more like keychain or display style because I loved the level of detail in the carving. The whole town was situated on a series of small canals and beyond the section where the “clog town” sat, lay fields and the actual world beyond. Only turning around to head home did we once again return to the city-scape and the more stereotypical Netherlands style homes.
On to the final notes, which may come as a relief after reading two pages of single spaced story telling. I visited one of the oldest churchs in The Hague and it was absolutely stunning, as to be expected. I will never cease to seek out these beautiful creations that are testaments to the amazing works that can be created by man to worship amazing works done by God/Jesus. Honestly, I should be making an effort to explore more religious temples and grounds, but I’m not quite that comfortable yet with the invasion of other religions I don’t understand or know enough about. If you were curious, the church I visited is called “St. James the Church in The Hague,” and it was amazing to see how even within this church the details were naturally oriented, with vines and trees in the tile work and the general beauty of the rest of the art within.
So, what’s next? This weekend I am touring the Peace Palace, and tomorrow, Sunday, I will be venturing out to some town to take photos of windmills—I haven’t quite planned that far ahead yet and therefor I can’t actually name anywhere yet. Next weekend, we have taken on the momentous task of hosting Thanksgiving (even though, in full European fashion, I am already skipping forward to Christmas), and then the final weekend I am here, I will be packing, prepping, and pretending I’m not about to be going home. That’s right folks, this Monday marks the two-week countdown for when I return home! The boring part of this means that I start working (hopefully) no later than December eleventh, but this also means I have so much fun to share very very soon with everyone and I cannot wait to tell you guys all about it!

Welcome to sexy fun times week! This week Hannah will go to bone town with the remaining and chose a husband! Let’s get right into it.
Peter’s date is first, and it’s pretty boring at first. It’s obviously very steamy, because all of their dates are. The night portion gets a little more serious, and Peter talks about his family. He is so very smitten with her and it’s very cute. He finally says he’s in love with her!
She hands him the fantasy suite card. It’s in a windmill! Take that, windmill haters! When there, Hannah opens a trunk and finds some treats, like condom. I appreciate this show promoting safe sex. Hannah makes a joke about Peter putting it there.
The next morning, Hannah compares herself and Peter to Aphrodite and Zeus. Not the best metaphor! But they’re both happy!  Peter leaves feeling good.
Now it’s Tyler time! Our boy! He and Hannah go to a spa for massages. Tyler is openly, ummm, attracted to her. They have a topless chat while getting massages. Tyler threatens pounce on the table. Instead of that, he switches places with the masseuse and begins to massage her. This leads to a topless makeout. Sorry for saying topless so much.
Once again, the night portion of the date gets more serious. Hannah is worried their relationship focuses too much on the physical. Hannah doesn’t want to go the fantasy suite just for sex with Tyler, and he agrees. He wants to spend time with her. He wants her to be comfortable and confident and he will not pressure her. This is when he says he loves her. Amen.
The next morning, they discuss how great their night of chatting was. Apparently they made out and stopped a lot just to hold each other. Most importantly, Hannah calls him “the most respectful man I’ve ever been with”.
After that, it’s time for Jed. The last one we saw Jed he was all pissy because he and Luke both got roses. There’s no drama at first. They just experience local culture
This doesn’t last for long, because a local grills Hannah about how she will choose a man. Jed gets upset and pulls Hannah aside to bitch about Luke. Hannah is perfectly honest about her and Luke’s “weird connection”. Jed doesn’t get why she’s holding onto something so uncertain. Hannah explains she’s seen more of him than the guys have. He accepts this and we move on.
Their evening portion of the date begins with Hannah telling Jed that it’s really not the time for Luke talk. Jed doesn’t accept this. He doesn’t get how Hannah can be in love with him but also keep someone around who has been toxic to this whole experience. Hannah has to get up and walk away and this idiot follows her. She doesn’t get why he doesn’t trust her decisions. She somehow forgives him and takes him to the fantasy suite.
I guess they had a wild night? That’s what Jed said at least. Disgusting.  Apparently they “didn’t sleep a wink”. Guess it was great. I super don’t care about Jed.
We saved the best for last. It’s Luke day! Just kidding he’s the worst and triggers my fight or flight. They don’t even do anything on their day date. Just ride in a helicopter and hang out. He kisses her in a nasty way. The end.
Luke is honored that he was chosen for that date. He also uses the word “darling”. I already hate the second half of this date. He tells her he wants marriage the way he wants it. They also talk about being spiritual leaders. Suddenly, he tells her sex is beautiful but only in the marriage bed! He thinks they’re on the same page. They are certainly not. Her face is so blank the whole time. But guys, don’t worry, Luke wants to make sure she’s not having sex with the other men. She pretty much says she hasn’t, and she is pissed. He asks to cut her off and she straight up says no. Iconic. She starts to list off other sins, like pride, because that is clearly Luke’s issue! He calls her having sex with another man is a “crazy scenario”! I am losing my mind. So is Hannah! He calls her having sex with another one of the men a slip up. Oh my god! Oh my GOD! It’s 2019, y’all! Have sex! Use a condom! Chase your bliss! And fuck (not literally) guys like Luke who think like this!
Anyway Hannah pretty much calls him a sinner. She finally realizes he has no husband qualities. Her mind is so powerful and I am so proud of this. Next she begins to quote the Bible at him, iconically saying, “I’m not Jesus”. Amen! Bless up! Praise him! She ends with saying she doesn’t want him to be her husband, and not giving him a chance to talk.
Dear reader, we are free! The Luke curse has ended. He keeps trying to talk, but it is not flying! He’s gone. Well, he should be but he will not get up. Dude is so confused! Luke finally gets up and leaves. But he refuses to get in the vehicle. Here’s a transcript:
  Hannah : “I had sex”.
  Luke: “Say what?”
Hannah: “And Jesus still loves me”.
That’s right ladies, Peter and Hannah got it on in that windmill! And Jesus still loves them! Luke gets in the car, but not before asking to pray for Hannah.
We did it we did it we did it! He’s gone! One real episode left and we are Luke free! Byeeeeee! We have all entered…oh god. Oh wait. He’s back next week. God. We can’t escape.
