Remembering Monty Norman and William Hart
I’ve been out of town for the last week, so as I’m catching up on things, here is my combined remembrance of two that we lost this week:
Remembering Monty Norman 1928-2022
Norman’s soundtrack to Dr. No
Composer Monty Norman has died at 94. His big claim to fame is composing the “James Bond Theme” and the score for the first Bond movie Dr. No. In each 007 movie, there is a different theme song, but the signature “James Bond Theme” has played in every film since Dr. No, usually in the very beginning. The song is iconic. It doesn’t feel like a Bond movie without that song.
The link above is the obit from Rolling Stone.
Remembering William “Poogie” Hart 1945-2022
Hart early and later as a Delfonic
Singer William “Poogie” Hart has died at 77. He was a part of the Philly soul group The Delfonics. They had a string of hits in the 60s and 70s with their vocal group sound combined with funk and R&B including “La-La (Means I Love You)” (later covered by Prince on his Emancipation album); “Ready for Not Here I Come (Can’t Hide from Love)” (later sampled by The Fugees for “Ready or Not”) and my favorite song of theirs “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind (This Time)” (later covered by New Kids on the Block). Hart and The Delfonics actually appeared in a 2016 episode of Luke Cage.
Jackie Brown shot of Max picking up The Delfonics tape at the store
In Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 film Jackie Brown, Max Cherry (played by Robert Forster) hears Jackie (Pam Grier) play “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind (This Time)” on vinyl and later is inspired to buy that song on cassette tape. That song is featured on the soundtrack album and the film also featured “La-La (Means I Love You)”. It was quite a shout-out to not just have their songs on the soundtrack, but to have the group name-checked by the characters in the film itself. Later in the film Ordell (played by Samuel L. Jackson) is in the car with Max with their cassette playing and he says “I didn’t know you liked The Delfonics.” and Max replies “Yep. They’re pretty good.”
The link above is the obit from Rolling Stone.
