Yo bear! This was my first time photographing black bears, I've probably seen bears out in the woods 1000 times. Lots of times out hiking and backpacking, but also they were in my back yard pretty much every night when I was a kid. . Just a quick note on safety, I wasn't as close as these photos might make you think. I have a long lens and cropped the pictures. You shouldn't try to approach a bear. At the same time, I don't see any reason to fear black bears. They are almost never dangerous unless you're extremely unlucky or extremely stupid. In both cases a black bear isn't likely to attack unless it feels threatened and can't run away. This sow was with her two cubs and hopefully everyone knows that messing with any wild animals children is a bad idea. . I'd been tracking them for two afternoons and evenings before getting a good look. When I did finally spot them, I was in awe of how silently they were moving through the brush and it made me think that for every bear I have seen in the wild, I've probably not noticed a handful more. . There was one big thrill, though. when I saw her catch my scent and tilt her nose up in the air. She looked right at me and took a couple steps directly toward me as she was getting a good nosefull of my BO that's when I snapped these framed. It did get my heart pumping and I actually love that heightened alertness you feel when I'm the presence of an animal that could easily beat you in a fight. However, nothing about this encounter was threatening. Once she had a good wiff, she turned around and walked away with her cubs following shortly after. . Bear in the river. . How are you all feeling about the constant bear photos? I usually prefer to mix things up, but I wanted to experiment with how consistently posting pictures of bears would work out. . I also just really like the bear pictures and I sort of figure a lot of them would be missed if I did just a couple carousel posts with 10 pictures each. . Anyway, mixed in with the rest of your feed, I can't imagine seeing some bears every day would bear problem.
