let's talk about names in The Folk of The Air

I realised today that I physically CAN'T shut up about how great of an author Holly Black is when it came to reference to folklore. I mean she basically build her carrier over her fairies knowledge. So anyway, here's some info about her character names because names are so important in the Fae world.

Let's start with Jude. The lies queen, the oath traitor, the one who

gets to turn a geis at her advantage, the mind trickster, the betrayer. According to multiple etymology work, "Jude" is a alterative form for Judah and therefore Judas, the bretrayer of Jesus. In old hebrew, Jude also mean " to praise". I mean, we are all accusating Cardan of being a simp, but maybe this little fairy-boy was just doing what the name was saying.

Speaking of our silly fae king, Cardan name was formed around the word "cairn", in old english. What is a cairn ? Nothing less that some rock pile that, in some stories, where supposed to gard the sleep of old fae king that where once trapped underground because they were too dangerous (or, dare I say, wicked ?). But it doesn't stop here, since "cardan" manage to became a surname for a stubborn person, and guess where the name "Cardan" first appeared ? Cheshire (wanna guess who he relate the most to when he read Alice in Wonderland ?)

Nicasia turn. One of the oldest and most powerful ocean spirit in the celtic folklore is called Old Nick, and I think there is some reference here made by Holly Black.

Taryn. Oh dear, do I have a lot to say about Taryn name. On the matter, she is probably the most gifted. Taryn name came from a variant of Thualta, the name of the godlike people that once rulled of Ireland before leaving to the undying island. Taryn represent the embodiment of the travel from mortal land to Elfame itself. But she also wear the same name as Tara, an old Irish fairy queen, wich name blend the meaning of "hills" and "star", showing the great extent of her power. Taryn is also a name given to the river that tend to overflow often. So, just like for her name, there is much more in Taryn that what we see at first.

Vivi complete name is Vivian and I think it speak for itself. Vivian is one of the many names of the Lady of the Lake, gardian of Excalibur. Her name in particular make me feel a little bittersweat. It bear the love of her step-dad for weapon, but also, it's maybe the first name her parent assimilated to fairies, and they may have chosen it quickly since they were still recovering with all the fae-related trauma. On the other hand, Vivian is also know to have managed to trap Merlin into a rock, so they were maybe wishing for her to be capable of overpowering any fae that could have wanted bother her.

Oak means oak (breathtaking I know), and oak trees are often associated with royalty in Celtic traditions. In France, it's said the king saint Louis was use to take court under a oak trees, and oak seed are often use to keep Fae treasures safe in fairytales

Hazel share some trees linked symbolism. It's known to be a symbols of righteousness and loyalty ( quite fitting for a knight if you want my opinion)

Jack sometimes means " to take the place", and, I mean, he is a changeling after all, but jack is also a name often give' to scarecrow, a parody of human beings

Benjamin's name means "second born" . Wtf, are you thinking if you have read the Darkest Part of the Forest. Isn't Benjamin the oldest sibling? Well yes, but he is the one the fairies like the most. The one who get the gift, the one who gets the story, the one deserving of a fairytale. And in all fairytales, it's the youngest son who is the hero, and who live the story. It's the benjamin brother who gets the magical gifts from the fairy lover who's head over heels for him. Ben might be the first born but by fairytale's logic, he is a Benjamin.

I haven't read the Oak saga yet so you'll have to tell me if it fits, but Suren's seem to means "the heroic one, the strong one"in Armenian, while her second name Wren, is the one of a small bird symbolising determination, enthusiasm and happiness

Some bonus for the Spiderwick Chronicles saga, because YES, I still believe they are part of this universe even if I know they legally can't.

Mallory etymology is from the french "malheureuse", wich means "unhappy", "unlucky", but something about the name of the others characters make me think it was choosen as a reference to Thomas Mallory, academically known as the first person to mention king Arthur in a written document (actually is more complicated but the meaning is still here)

Helen can be a reference as Helen of Troy, a female character who is often perceived as irritating and uninteresting until you start to rethink the story from her point of you, just like Jared have to learn that his mom is not trying to work against him, she is just a single mom trying her best.

I believe there must be some cultural references with Simon names, but I did not find it. All I've got is that his name means"to hear and to listen" such is kinda fitting,not gonna lie, my boy is trying to hold this family together by will alone so he have to play mediator all the time. (And of course It was saint Peter first name, like @amr102 say, everybody in this family is a reference)

I think Arthur Spiderwick name is a obvious reference to king Arthur since they bear (ehee, bear,king Arthur, you have it ?) the same narrative purpose of being the focus point of action without doing anything. (Update, @amr102 also reminded me that Tony Diterlizzi, the other author of the chronicles was massively influenced by Arthur Rackam style for his illustration, so, yeah, there is a reference for both of the authors)

For Lucinda, her name etymology come from lux, the light. But in a lot of gaelic tales, such as Cuchlein and Olwein, characters associated with light tends to turn crazy and / or see what the rest of the world cannot

And finally, Jared, my favourite one yet since the theory that he was named after Jareth the Goblin King from Labyrinth 1986 will never leave my brain.

The air was electric in the room. People were scared, the two boys were staring into each other's eyes so intensely that Sirius swore he could see lighting pass from hazel to grey. Remus was hunched over the coffee table, elbows on his knees, hands intertwined over his mouth to conceal it, brows furrowed. Regulus was reciprocating the look, but his back was straight, poker face unmovable, while he moved his piece on the board. Remus glanced down, just for a second, but his expression did not slip, his competitiveness had a hold on him, he could not let Regulus read him, he could not lose. 

“What, Lupin, are you taken aback by my move?” 

Regulus was cold as ice, Remus could not read his expression, could not break into his mind. It was driving him crazy. He could not give him the satisfaction, he had to keep fighting. 

“I’m just surprised by how obvious it is. You’re becoming predictable, Black,”

Remus made his move, this game was gonna end soon, everybody knew it. 

It was Board Games night, and, as usual, it was ending with a chess tournament, and the Black-Lupin match was always the most anticipate.Those two were phenomenal at chess, their competitiveness, not a bit mulled by their relationship (rather increased, actually), always made the game extremely interesting to watch, and the new entries, who were not used to this kind of interest over a game of chess, were always taken aback by the dynamic of the match. 

It was the case for Dorcas: even though she was a very close friend of Regulus’, she never came to board game night. Not until she got together with Marlene, at least, and she was now totally enraptured (read, weirded out) by this particular event. 

“You might wanna think about this move, Lupin” 

Regulus was saying from the table

“Don’t wanna get too reckless.”

“Oh, don’t act like you don’t like reckless, Black” 

Remus was responding to every provocation given by his boyfriend, without ever letting the fire in him die down. 

“Ok, what exactly am I watching?”

Asked Dorcas, confused by the scene in front of her. 

“Shhh, this is their foreplaying, let them do their thing” 

Sirius answered, never letting the game out of his sight

“Huh, you seem pretty okay with your brother's sexual life, then, didn’t expect that.”

Sirius dismissed her with a wave of his hand.

“I’m not interested in his sexual life, I just wanna know if I'll be able to sleep in my bed tonight” 

“What does that have to do with…” 

But as Dorcas was finishing his sentenced, Remus smirked and exclaimed 

“Checkmate, Black” 

“Fuck off, Lupin” 

Regulus grumbled 

“Oh Fuck off! Come on Prongs, Wormy, get ready to sleep in the common room tonight” 

Dorcas was more confused than before

“What? Why would they sleep down here?” 

Marlene laughed at Sirius’ despair

“You see, those games are not only a fun way to end the night and rile each other up, for those two, it also settles in wich bed they’re gonna shag for the night” 

Dorcas hummed in understanding, as she saw Remus taking a grumbling Regulus by hand and dragging him up the stairs, while waving goodnight at their friends.

Hello again!

So, here we are again; you made it through the year. So  as a reward, it is time for you to read my always corny (but always sincere) message (wich every year I promise myself to write something better but never end up following through :P).

So here we are again. The end of another year. And once again I say, WHAT A YEAR! A lot of crazy stuff happened. I mean, lots of crazy stuff. Geez, can’t we have a little break? Not even being chill for 6 months? Eh. The important thing is that you made it through.

As usual, I would like to wish my followers, mutuals and the ones I follow a Happy New Year. Think about all the things that happened to you. I hope you enjoyed the good things and learned from the bad. Remember all the people that you met and said goodbye to. And that everything that you wished came true. If not, I hope that happens, starting tomorrow.

Let me tell you something I already told last year, but I still think it’s important to remember, especially now.

I know that sometimes things can get really bad.  And I know that sometimes it is difficult to go on and believe that it will get better. But trust me, it will. Just keep up with the good work you are doing.  I’m sure that, whatever bad situation you’re going through, you will overcome it and become a stronger and better person. Be strong. You can do it. And if not, I sincerely hope you can recover and heal, someway. Now it’s the time for that.

So here’s to 2025. I wish all the best. Lots of love, health, new friendships, success and great accomplishments, new and exciting experiences to enjoy and learn from and that you can become what you wish to be.

so i hope this doesn't come off as a critic or disrespectful but please feel free to ignore this if it does feel that way but I was wondering if we could be we capable of "customizing" our dynamic with Merrypen in the future? i realize this may come off as weird so let me explain: i'm romancing Hazel in my playtrough and in chapter four I choose the option of "think of your grandmother quilt" -i know is kinda my fault for not chosing the option with my ro but I though that option would uncover more backstory- wich led to a scene where Pen kind of kiss the mc wich personally made me uncomfortable because it seemed ooc for my mc since i cant see them being that physical close to someone outside their romantic partner. I know Pen and mc connection goes beyond human understanding and if thats their way to show affection and its set in the game then its okay, i just remember than in previous chapter where we can also kiss Pen the player can chose if its just in a joking manner, with a purely platonic meaning, a romantic one or even also being capable of just shoving them off and being annoyed by it so i found it weird that we didn't get a choice like that in that scene too. again i'm just wondering and i'm completely okay if their dynamic is set to be that way. I hope I worded this in a respectful way and i'm sorry if I come off as entlited.

Not disrespectful at all. That's a genuine question and a good thing for me to think about.

As of right now, my answer is "hopefully". There is a lot of things I want to do with this story and a lot of things I want to do with how the MC reacts to different people. And I do like the idea of getting to kind of customize that more. I just sometimes get very overwhelmed while writing a chapter and don't see the bigger picture of what may need to be done.

Going forward, I think I will try to give a bit more of a range. But that might be something that I can focus better on during the rewrite of the entire book.

the fact that Leo didn't tell Piper and Jason of his plan because they wouldn't want him to do it but told Hazel and Frank, one of wich he thinks kinda hate him insted of his best friends breaks me a bit because:

he needs Hazel to do her mist magic to get the plan to work

both are the only romans he didn't 'know' before this quest, and probobly a part of him was thinking they wouldn't care as much as Jason and Piper

Hazel knows that death is a natural part of life, and is a child of the god of death, and would undertand that its 'his time', his final stand

He thinks Frank hates him and wouldn't care

and then BAM both of them start crying and telling him not to do it

However, Arabella is unable to give in, she is capable of moving heaven, earth and even sea to achieve what she sets out to do and no one is able to bring her down from her idea. Persevering? maybe, that's what she likes to think, but rather stubborn.

Glad you're enjoying my content (: !! For the style of my diapers I like them both. I love the cute designs from ABDL-Diapers, but they are so expensive and hard to get, that I don't really have access to them and for the summer, they tend to be a little too hot to wear 🙈 And medical diapers like the Tena Slip, are perfect for "everyday" diapers, even though I don't wear them daily :D :D What I would like to try in the future would be the AB-Universe Diapers Little King and Bunny Hopps, they both look so adorable!! I have to get my hands on them somehow 😊

Mike would be Hephaestos, he is so hard working and #strong, with a big interest in Pan, because of his love for nature and animals (wich is a headcanon I hope we all agree on #VeganMike) BUT I can also see him in the Demeter cabin for the same reasons?

Bev reminds me so much of Piper, they both can't handle being pretty and try to hide it and still kick ass, so I bet she would hate it but I put her to Aphrodite;

Ben, the fucking architect, reading all day, of course he is a Athena kid;

Richie, joking, pulling pranks, 100% a Hermes kid;

Backstory:

After the Outbreak, a former Criminal organisation called ,,The coyotes" startet to gather their surviving members and build clans, with a monarchie and a cult like distance to other people. Because this organisation was spread over the whole country, many clans formed in different citys, all called ,,The coyotes of..." and then their City name.

The Coyotes of Cambridge where lead by the Lawman family, for about 12 years, a friendly family with a hartfull Dad called Michael, and a wise Mother called Alexandra. Their two children, the 12 year old Max and the 9 year old Bells, could not have wished for a better life. That was until an old family rival, Joe Christenson, betrayed the Lawmans and startet a revelution with his friends, in wich both the parents and the oldest son were killed in the shade of night. The daughter however, managed to escape through an open window, and ran into the night. Driven by fear she ran out of Cambridge and in the abandoned nearby City Boston, where she seeked shelter in an old library.

Shortly after that Event, Bells encountered her first ever Clicker, and after beeing protectet by the Clan of the Cambridge Coyotes her whole life she was terefied. But not only that awakened in her that Day, but something else: fascination. The way those creatures moved and comunicated with each other, Bells could not help but feel drawn to them. Spying on them through vents and windows, she memorized every bit of Information she could get on those creatures, and wrote them down in the notebooks of the old library, wich had become her New home by now. Everything about them was hypnotizing to Bells, and given the Hunting Traditions of the Coyotes (Look up under ,,Coyote Lore") she quickly learned to replicate their sounds and movements.

It wasn't until her 11. Birthday, that she met Tess. Living already two years in the abandoned streets of Boston, she knew the place like nothing else, and noticed the middle aged woman wandering cluelesly trough the streets, after she got lost. After a while of watching her from a close distance, she decided to help, and the two of them quickly formed a sister like bond. From that Day on, Tess took Bells under her wing, and theached her usefull things like swimming or handeling a shot gun. If she could she would have taken her back to the quarantine Zone with her, but the young Girl prefered the lonely streets of Boston to the crowded, loud and stinky Quarantine Zone.

About two years later, Tess decided it was time for Bells to meet a few people, who she thought would help her. Turns out the dealers and criminals that were her friends, saw a lot of potential in the young Girl, and so they hired her for a job: if she managed to bring an order of five guns to the other side of Boston, where a Client would be waiting, she could keep ⅓ of the money. Brave as always she went on her way, and succsesfully delivered the order. With her New earned money she went to a black market in one of the outer areas of the quarantine Zone, and bought her first own Set of throwing knives. The feeling was addicting, and so she decided to keep up the work, and startet to transport more Orders to other parts of Boston, or the nearby citys. Beeing known as the only person able to survive for years in this town, everybody trusted her and her judgement, and sonetimes groups of people even asked for guidance through the Ruins of the City. Enjoying the New Human contact, and feeling like this was her lifes purpose, she quickly made many contacts, and even a few friends among those shady gangsters, that she worked with.

A few minutes ago Tess texted her on the prepaid Phone, she got for one of her latest Missions, and asked her to meet her and some friends at a Spot near the river, and that it was realy urgent. So, doing everything for Tess, she is now on her way to meet her and those ,,friends" and look at whatever Problem they might have. If only she knew that this would conpletly change her life...

(I'm shifting to about a week before this event)

Further life:

Bells goes on the Mission to safely bring Ellie to the fireflys, even tho she was mentally shook after Tess' death. The only Thing saving her out of her low, was a certain girl she rather quickly developed a crush on, and her alomst dying love for photography, wich came to life again on this ,,trip". And of course, a grumpy old man who's Lack of Humor sometimes made their journey hell.

The first time they arived in Jackson, she meet Tommy and Maria Miller. The married couple Was startled, when they met this young Girl, old enough to be their daughter, who Was so much like them. But not only did they notice that, but also their growing feelings towards her, in a way of feeling the need to protect her. So of course it was hard letting her go on her journey again, and Bells too did feel a weird need to stay behind with them. But, staying loyal to her friends, she let it go and went with Joel and Ellie.

In the Hospital, where the fireflys were planing to kill Ellie to make a cure, Bells made propably the most selfish decission of her life: she punched the guard that tried to Escort her out, and ran through the Hospital searching for Ellie. Midway or so, she found out Joel had had the same idea as her, wich made them Team up (ans kill an entire Hospital but thats not important...).

Jackson was the plaxe they fleed to, and seeing the town made a weird feeling come up in Bells chest: It felt like home. And when she saw Tommy and Maria come out of the City and run towards them, she threw herself in their arms. It was then and there that Maria asked Bells to become her daughter, and to let them adopt her as their child. And lets just say, she wears the Name Lawman-Miller with great Pride.

Coyote Lore:

The Monarchie:

The Monarchie is a Prinzip, that every Coyote Clan follows. After the clans got together shortly after the outbreak, the Highest ranked member became the leader, and their family was treated like royalty. Should he die, eather their spouse or their children would cary on as the leader of the Clan, and if they had neither, their next family member or, if they have no family, the next highest member becomes the New leader.

The lifestyle:

Unlike many other clans after the outbreak, the Coyote Clans do not steal from others, nor murder them or harm them in any other way, unless they harmed someone from their own lines. They have fields whereever they can, and high fences to shout out the Rest of the World, infected and humans. They build up their own markets, and have rules that everyone has to follow. They don't interact with normal people, but they do talk to other coyote clans and help eachother out, if needed.

The Hunting Traditions:

Every kid in the Clan is taken on a hunt for their 6. Birthday. On that Day, their parents Show them, how to use certain weapons like bows and knives, and how to replicate noises. Because in the Coyote Clans, everyone learns to mimic the sounds around them, so that they could Hunt their pray more easiely and scare away other humans, by replicating the growls of a Wolf, if they wan't to avoid a fight. So, from that Hunting Trip on, every kid goes to a special school, where they learn the tecniques for mimicing a Sound, and when their teacher thinks they are ready they do a test, and wheater they pas or not decides if they get a hunting license. Some Coyotes even enhance this Power by teaching themselfs how to mimic other peoples voices.

(I'm gonna do a Part two for basically what happens after the first Part of TLOU, because trust me there happens A LOT!)

Hello, Everyone!

I’d like to share with you another handmade illustration inspired by nature and the changing seasons. I have been transitioning from summer to autumn vibes lately in my drawings, therefore you can notice more orange hues.

This time I focused on the rowan tree and its vibrant, orange berries.

The rowans or mountain-ashes are shrubs or trees in the genus Sorbus of the rose family, Rosaceae. They are native throughout the cool temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest species diversity in the Himalaya, southern Tibet and parts of western China, where numerous microspecies occur.

The Old English name of the rowan is cwic-beám, which survives in the name quickbeam (also quicken, quicken-tree, and variants). This name by the 19th century was reinterpreted as connected to the word witch, from a dialectal variant wick for quick and names such as wicken-tree, wich-tree, wicky, and wiggan-tree, giving rise to names such as witch-hazel and witch-tree.

In Sami mythology, the goddess Ravdna is the consort of the thunder-god Horagalles. Red berries of rowan were holy to Ravdna, and the name Ravdna resembles North Germanic words for the tree (for example, Old Norse reynir).

In Norse mythology, the goddess Sif is the wife of the thunder god Thor, who has been linked with Ravdna. According to Skáldskaparmál the rowan is called “the salvation of Thor” because Thor once saved himself by clinging to it. It has been hypothesized that Sif was once conceived in the form of a rowan to which Thor clung.

PERSONAL!! THOUGHTS ON "FRAU HOLLE"

Hey my dear norse Heathen out there, would you share your thoughts on "Frau Holle" (Holda) with me? As a Fairytale Persona she is widly known around here in Germany (and as the favorite Fairytale of my second born I had to read it DOZENT of times). And whenever I search for her, I get this thought...how near I put her to Hella/Hell. Like a Dualistic. You know? Hell is Keeper of Souls; so I made sense that she rides with the wild Hunt and gather the souls of the deads that could not pass in the twelve Nights (like said from Holla).

The Elderberry Bush is sacred to Holla - under it, just like the hazel, should sit a snake and curse you, if you take without asking. Snake - an animal I personal put into connection with Hell. Holla is said to take the Souls of the Unborn children out of her Wells to get born - so wells as portals in the World of Souls. Wich is who's domane? Yes, Hells! I mean, even the bringing of Snow - laying the Land in a white Cloak of Dead and Rest - is something that (again I PERSONAL) connect with Hell. BUT.... Than there is this Big Chunck of "Housework" - Thing. But as far as I know and understand - is this only from the Grimm Fairytale about "Mother Holda" and not - as far as I know - based on folkloric tellings. so...could it just be a mix up for again, making an old tale more appealing and more teatching for a christian audiance? (The "Good" Girl is rewarded; becaue she does the woman work without complain; and the "bad" girl is punished for not being a good Housewife). Oh...and Holla is litterally more of "Flattering Name" like we know from - for example Roman Furies - translating to "The Good", the "Merciful", "The full of Hail" kind of way. So literally adressing a female Spirit in a nice and flattering Way to gain something good from her. What would mean, that - And again, only my personal Idea - her theoretical worshipped Name don't go with this "positive" area of responsibility. So. Now you know my Ideas and Thinking. Would you mind share yours with me? And remember, we're all adults and can talk respectful with one another. Which means, we can respectful hold different opinions. I am always hungry & wanting to have sex. This is a fact. If you get right down to it the new unprocessed peanut butter is no damn good & you should buy it in a jar as always in the largest supermarket you know. And I am an enemy of change, as you know. All the things I embrace as new are in fact old things, re-released: swimming, the sensation of being dirty in body and mind summer as a time to do nothing and make no money. Prayer as a last re- sort. Pleasure as a means, and then a means again with no ends in sight. I am absolutely in opposition to all kinds of goals. I have no desire to know where this, anything is getting me. When the water boils I get a cup of tea. Accidentally I read all the works of Proust. It was summer I was there so was he. I write because I would like to be used for years after my death. Not only my body will be compost but the thoughts I left during my life. During my life I was a woman with hazel eyes. Out the window is a crooked silo. Parts of your body I think of as stripes which I have learned to love along. We swim naked in ponds & I write be- hind your back. My thoughts about you are not exactly forbidden, but exalted because they are useless, not intended to get you because I have you & you love me. It’s more like a playground where I play with my reflection of you until you come back and into the real you I get to sink my teeth. With you I know how to relax. & so I work behind your back. Which is lovely. Nature is out of control you tell me & that’s what’s so good about it. I’m immoderately in love with you, knocked out by all your new white hair

why shouldn’t something I have always known be the very best there is.
