It seemed only a matter of time before Julien Baker would combust. Monday at the first of a sold-out three-night residency at Thalia Hall, the singer-songwriter performed with the kind of extreme intensity that can be difficult to watch and feels both thrilling and draining to witness. She made it impossible for anyone to look away, and matched the fervor of her lyrics with spontaneous body language and unfiltered banter that underlined her tightly wound passion.
Raw and unscripted, the 90-minute concert marked a memorable way to start a tour, Baker’s first headline outing in two years. Aside from sticking to an apparent setlist, the 28-year-old approached the show by refusing to trade in predictability or artifice. Backed by a five-piece band amid a spartan stage setup, and venturing deep into her catalog, she stood as the antithesis of most peers and predecessors with her degree of success.
Nervous, excited, jittery, sincere and occasionally unable to keep her focus, Baker operated on a wavelength that brought her to an eye-to-eye level with fans and established her as a relatable person rather than an untouchable, unknowable celebrity. That didn’t mean she didn’t take her craft seriously. Indeed, Baker’s recurrent concerns about getting everything right, her admitted apprehension over remembering words and playing tunes alone, demonstrated a heightened conscientiousness and unguarded honesty few entertainers openly share.
Yes, Baker and company erred at several points, though her worries about the hoarseness of her voice — she said she overtaxed it in rehearsals — largely proved unfounded when she opened her mouth to sing. The various missteps and imperfections felt as if they belonged and, oddly enough, enhanced the fearlessness and courage with which Baker addressed harrowing topics ranging from mental illness and violent abuse to debilitating doubt and loneliness.
For all the pain and anguish in her songs, Baker continues to enjoy an ascent that a majority of burgeoning musicians would envy. Her still-developing career is evidence that listeners can still suss out singular talent even in a pop-culture landscape overstuffed with countless options and here-today-gone-tomorrow hypes vying for attention.
A decade ago, using studio time given to her by a friend, Baker recorded what became her debut in just three days while studying to be a teacher at Middle Tennessee State University. Though she didn’t expect many people outside her immediate orbit to hear them, the songs became a word-of-mouth sensation. After an indie imprint signed her and formally released the material as the “Sprained Ankle” LP, Baker landed on record-label radars and major media outlets’ best-of-year lists.
Virtually overnight, the Tennessee native went from pursuing a college education to headlining a national tour. She shared a compelling backstory that included candid details about her evangelical upbringing, battles with addictions and decision as a teenager to come out as queer to her parents. Baker’s critically acclaimed sophomore album (“Turn Out the Lights,” 2017) further expanded her profile and, the following year, she formed Boygenius with Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers.
Despite releasing just two EPs and one full-length to date, Boygenius has won three Grammy Awards and cultivated enough interest that it finished touring last fall with a capacity show at the Hollywood Bowl.
Who knows, Baker’s own material might work in such settings, but its personal intimacy and intricate architecture — moody violins, atmospheric keyboards, spare guitars, chamber-inspired orchestrations — are better-suited for halls and theaters. Her three solo turns on Monday, which included the disarming “Guthrie” and a searing rendition of “Something” during which every utterance of the titular word registered as a self-inflicted gutpunch, benefited from the coziness of the mid-sized venue.
Wearing a white button-down shirt and jeans, with her hair pulled into a ponytail bun, Baker, too, appeared comfortable in an environment in which she could forge a close bond with the audience. Having previously dealt with stage fright, she revealed she no longer enjoys playing without a support band and encouraged anyone who knew the words to sing along. With rare exception, the latter request went unheeded. The hushed crowd treated Baker’s emotional outpourings with reverence of scripture.
During the faintest moments, the faint hum of amplifiers framed Baker’s delicate vocals. Expressed as whispers, asides, exhales and shudders, her gentle singing confirmed quiet moments can have as much volume as full-throated cries. Well-placed screams and howls also figured in Baker’s repertoire. She frequently delivered loud passages when standing feet away from the microphone stand or shifting her stance.
The movements altered her words’ pitch, and instilled the sensation that she was either trying to flee a bad situation, engaged in a heated confrontation or yelling into an abyss. Even with a guitar or keyboard shielding her rail-thin physique, Baker couldn’t disguise the physical impact the songs registered on her body or the anxiety they triggered in her mind.
Pointing at her temple, running her hands through her hair, covering her mouth with her forearm, shaking her head, squeezing her eyes shut, unconsciously transferring the weight from one leg to another: Baker looked as if she’d pull the bones out from beneath her skin as she chronicled traumas, faults and hurts with unsparing conviction. Far more dynamic live than on the studio recordings, the taut rhythmic structures of the songs accentuated the struggles with faith, forgiveness and optimism the singer explored via bruised, bloodied narratives.
Baker’s music is not generally fun or always easy to digest, particularly given the explicit references to suicidal thoughts, toxic relapses, self-destructive behaviors and all manner of failures. Yet it often sounded momentous and freeing — the balladic frameworks of fare such as “Crying Wolf” and “Funeral Pyre” beautiful and melodic, the crashing urgency of “Tokyo” and “Hardline” effervescent and cathartic — and spoke to vital issues without coming across as self-serving.
“I’m so (expletive) happy, you just can’t (expletive) tell,” Baker announced, typically subdued and aware of the irony, as she explained how much playing matters to her. She later gave a few clearer signs of her temperament. Baker climbed atop the drum riser to bash out punk-style chords on her electric guitar; stomped around and double-over her instrument during another explosive sequence and, ultimately, let her hair fall over her shoulders.
That, and led the band through two live premieres (the obscure seven-inch B-side “Conversation Piece,” the brand-new and unreleased “Middle Children”) and waged a conflicted war for snatching some semblance of goodness out of the jaws of despair. In the fractured episodes of “Ziptie,” “Appointments” and “Ringside,” Baker didn’t identify fixed solutions or guaranteed redemption. Still, the songs hit on the potential of mercy and hope, and of trying against all odds to conquer sensations of dread, sadness and emptiness.
For Baker, and everyone now struggling to reconcile the notions of kindness and decency against the evils that humans continue to do to one another and the planet, it’s a start to a long-overdue conversation.

Hullo! It's SecretID!Alastor Anon, haunting your inbox with Alastor blether again:
I'll preface this with that this continues off of my rewrite AU ideas, Radio Demon's Identity-is-a-secret/unknown AU and wing amputee, peryton!Alastor who's been in survival (stressy) mode since his ass dropped into hell decades ago (is it bad that I kinda want Hell time and Earth time to have time dilation? 1:1 time ratio's kinda boring ngl).
For your consideration: Transman Alastor. He doesn't have physical antlers, they'd be shadow constructs and he can change their size and shape generally however he wants if he's got the magic/energy for it. I'm thinking of his powers being more shadow as well as radio-based (god his canon powers, design and motifs are so goddamn overcrowded, radio, shadows, eldritch-in-the-lovecraftian-sense, AND voodoo? holy fuck)? And maybe some shadow realm hammerspace for travel convenience (personal meat freezer and travel bag anybody?)? He'd be the kinda fellow who's always on the move, never stays in one place too long or too often and once a place's "safety" in his mind has been even partially-compromised he won't return to it for quite some time.
Also I had the design-idea of even replacing the black hairtips from canon with something like, bits of shadow crawling up his hair. Because he doesn't cast a shadow the normal way? He would keep his shadow off the ground, possibly hidden under his clothes, basically hugging himself tight (it could even help with holding himself upright whenever he's injured or weak/tired), leave no trace for predators to follow or tells for prey to see. Hell, maybe the shadow antlers are his shadow's hands but transformed and warped into different shapes? Can also resemble Radio Wireframe antennae or something sometimes?
And because I have nowhere else to put it, but, Alastor with the ability to steal voices and stories of people he kills in a certain way (certain criteria?) or something? Somethingsomething radio stuff? Idk how the radio and how sound design works, even with 30s or 30s adjacent tech, I feel like there's flavor to be found there of him being able to throw his (or someone else's) voice (or multiple voices). I can imagine him doing a wounded gazelle gambit but with voice throwing to lure a target somewhere more isolated.
I'm really in love with the idea of themes of Alastor being equal parts Hunter and Hunted, both in his behaviors and design. Shadows and radio, mostly heard, and if you DO see him, you either never knew he was there or it's too late (for you). Predator and Prey and awfully aware of it, the preference of low-risk moderate-reward ventures warring with that prey instinct that is equal parts hide/run away and beat the ever-loving shit out of that thing that looked at you vaguely threateningly. And it's not like these instincts come specifically from just, dying and his new form in Hell, but also based off of either experiences or exaggerated bits of Alastor's personality and the magic that formed his Hell-body going off of that or something idk.
Also, yanno another thing that could be interesting? What if in his life on Earth, he never even got to be on the radio? And the closest he ever got was being one of the studio crew or staff, or his 'crimes' being reported/talked bout on air (I'm kinda leaning more and more vigilante killer with Alastor, to tie further with the comic). But maybe he collected radios and tried making his own setup (a lot harder in the 1930s I'd imagine), practiced his voice and what his show would be like, but never got to be on the air no matter how hard he worked or tried, a dream forever unrealized (until Hell).
Random more down to earth (hah) stuff about my version of Alastor, besides cooking, hunting/tracking, and butchering/dressing down kills (whatever they may be), I could imagine him liking to sew or make clothes, something he could've done with his mother maybe? Or maybe he's just picked up some things from some trades he's worked in his life back on Earth when he was trying to work up into the radio business. Kinda a jack of several trades. Also this Alastor would drink his (at least, his version of) Respect Women juice, and Vaggie isn't excluded from this either (like I could imagine him annoying her a bit, but no ass slappage like canon, sorry not sorry). Also wing amputee things but, chronic residual limb pain? Or burns too, I haven't decided (sorry not sorry, I like my whump what can I say).
Also when trying to pitch the Radio Demon's deal to Charlie, Charlie can tell that Alastor himself was lying about Something, just not about what because idk I would imagine that everybody in Hell (and on Earth too) lies about things, even normal regular things. Charlie isn't that stupid, she's lived in Hell her entire life. Also okay, I really like the idea of her doing this entire plan all because she just wants Vaggie (can I rename her Aggie or something, pls) to be safe in Heaven and has no idea if this could work, they don't even know by what measure Heaven accepts people, much less condemned sinners ffs.
I would imagine that Alastor himself would be 'sending reports' to the Radio Demon (lol) as he helps the Hotel run better or something, with the Radio Demon making a few 'appearances' over the radios that start to populate the Hasbeen Hotel after the (informal?) alliance is started. There would be some mystery as to Why the Radio Demon wants to ally with this venture, because the boredom excused won't hold forever, and according to Niffty and Husk, Alastor has been in the Radio Demon's employ longer than they ever were, so who better to grill or watch for info? Any maybe, I would say that out of all his (relatively few, compared to other Sinners in the weight class that everyone assumes the Radio Demon is in) contracts, he likes Husk and Niffty the best (I mean, they've actually met Alastor as himself enough to sorta know him, even if they don't know he's the Radio Demon either, so that could say a lot). Idk what to do with his relationship to Rosie rn.
Thanks for listening to my ever-increasing Alastor blether again, thoughts, rebuttals or additions are welcome. <3
Loving all this blether! The part about Alastor drinking his respect women juice jumped out at me in particular, because I'm pretty sure Vivzie's under the impression that he already does. There's that comic where he saves a woman from being attacked and kills the guy who does it, but Vivzie also can't resist the urge to have him slap Vaggie on the ass because she thinks it's funny when characters are horrible to Vaggie.
A better writer would contrast the perfect gentleman Alastor thinks he is with the reality and also with Angel, who doesn't give a shit who he's rude to, but...Vivzie!

How to Start a Tea Education Program on a Budget - Basketleaf
best business under ₹1 lakh With growing interest in specialty teas and wellness, a tea education program can be a rewarding way to connect with tea enthusiasts, promote your brand, and generate additional revenue streams. For aspiring entrepreneurs in India, creating a tea education program is a unique and profitable business opportunity that can be started on a budget of less than ₹1 lakh. Here’s a step-by-step guide to launching a tea education program while keeping costs low and maximizing impact.
1. Define Your Tea Education Program's Focus
Before diving into the logistics, consider the core purpose of your tea education program. Will it focus on tea-tasting techniques, the health benefits of tea, tea blending, or tea culture? By clarifying your focus, you can tailor your program to meet specific audience needs.
Action Tips: Research popular tea topics like “Introduction to Tea Tasting,” “Benefits of Herbal Teas,” or “The Art of Tea Blending.” Choose a niche based on your knowledge and the interests of your target audience.
2. Set Up a Basic Budget and Plan
Planning out your budget is essential for a low-cost venture. With a ₹1 lakh limit, focus on keeping expenses minimal. Allocate your budget for key areas like sourcing quality teas for tastings, promotional materials, basic equipment, and, if needed, venue rental.
3. Create Engaging and Informative Content
Content is the heart of any education program. Plan out your curriculum, which could include modules such as:
History and Origins of Tea
Types of Tea and Their Unique Characteristics
Health Benefits of Different Teas
Tea Brewing and Tasting Techniques
Creating Your Own Tea Blends
Action Tips: Develop a series of slide decks, downloadable handouts, or video presentations. Use free online design tools like Canva for visually appealing content.
4. Choose an Affordable Delivery Format
To save costs, consider hosting your program virtually. An online tea education program can reach a wider audience, cut down on venue costs, and allow participants to join from the comfort of their homes.
In-Person Workshops: Ideal for local audiences and hands-on experiences, in-person workshops create a strong community feel. Choose an affordable venue, such as a rented studio, co-working space, or even a local café.
Online Courses: Use platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or even social media live sessions for a digital experience. You can also pre-record sessions and sell them as online courses.
Action Tips: For online programs, invest in a basic microphone and camera setup to ensure high-quality audio and visuals. Many online platforms offer free or low-cost hosting options.
5. Source Quality Tea Samples on a Budget
Offer participants the opportunity to taste a variety of teas, sourced affordably but ensuring quality. Look for suppliers who offer sample sizes, or reach out to local tea vendors who might be interested in sponsoring or providing discounts in exchange for exposure.
Action Tips: Start with 3-5 core teas (like green, black, oolong, herbal, and white) and buy them in bulk to save costs. Partner with local tea brands or tea estates to source samples affordably.
6. Use Social Media for Cost-Effective Marketing
Promote your tea education program on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Showcase short video clips, infographics, and testimonials to build interest. Social media advertising can also help you reach a larger audience within your region without breaking the bank.
Action Tips: Create engaging posts that highlight the value of the program, such as benefits of tea knowledge, sneak peeks of the sessions, or participant reviews. Set a small budget for targeted ads to reach potential tea enthusiasts in your area.
7. Partner with Influencers or Local Tea Cafés
Tea influencers or local tea cafés can be valuable partners in spreading the word about your program. A local tea café might even be interested in hosting an in-person class or a tasting session. Influencers, on the other hand, can promote your program to a larger online audience.
Action Tips: Offer free access to influencers in exchange for promotion, or collaborate with a café to host a co-branded event that benefits both parties.
8. Create a Community to Build Loyalty and Engagement
Build an online community, such as a Facebook group or WhatsApp group, for program participants. This space allows tea enthusiasts to discuss learnings, share insights, and ask questions, making your program more interactive and engaging.
Action Tips: Moderate the group by sharing content, answering questions, and hosting Q&A sessions. A dedicated community builds loyalty and encourages participants to recommend the program to friends.
9. Use Testimonials and Feedback for Program Growth
After your initial sessions, collect feedback from participants to refine your program. Testimonials from satisfied participants can be used in future marketing efforts, while constructive feedback can help you improve the quality and content of your program.
Action Tips: Send follow-up emails to gather feedback and ask participants for reviews. Incorporate these into your website, social media, and promotional materials.
10. Offer Certificates to Add Value
Offering a completion certificate can be a great way to add perceived value without much additional cost. It makes the program feel more professional and gives participants something to share on social media, further promoting your brand.
Action Tips: Use free design software like Canva to create simple, professional-looking certificates. Send them as digital downloads to keep costs low.
Conclusion
Starting a best business under ₹1 lakh is entirely possible with careful planning, creativity, and smart marketing. By focusing on a niche audience, utilizing affordable marketing strategies, and creating a valuable educational experience, you can establish a profitable and engaging tea education program. This business model not only helps build your brand reputation but also connects you with passionate tea enthusiasts who could become long-term customers.

How to Start Your Own Elective Ultrasound Business: A Step-by-Step Guide
Tumblr media
Starting your own elective ultrasound business can be an exciting and rewarding venture. With the growing popularity of keepsake baby ultrasound services and the development of advanced 3D/4D ultrasound technology, many expectant parents are eager to have an intimate and memorable glimpse of their baby before birth. However, starting this type of business requires careful planning, investment, and dedication. In this blog post, we will guide you through the essential steps to launch your own successful elective ultrasound business, from choosing the right training programs to effective marketing strategies. Let's dive into the details to ensure you're well-prepared for this exciting journey. Understanding the Elective Ultrasound Business Elective ultrasound services focus on providing parents with non-medical ultrasound imaging to capture keepsake moments of their baby. This differs from diagnostic ultrasounds conducted in hospitals and clinics, as elective ultrasounds are purely for entertainment and bonding purposes. Many studios offer 3D or 4D ultrasounds that provide more detailed and lifelike images, making them popular among parents who want to cherish their baby's early development. However, running a successful elective ultrasound business involves more than just owning the equipment. You need to have a thorough understanding of the industry, proper elective ultrasound training, and the ability to offer a memorable customer experience. Step 1: Conduct Market Research Before diving into any business, understanding your market is key. Research your local area to assess whether there is demand for elective ultrasound services. Some key points to consider include: - Competitor analysis: Are there other 3D/4D ultrasound businesses or franchises in your area? If so, what services do they offer, and at what price points? Consider how you can differentiate your services. - Target audience: Your primary customers will be expectant parents, but consider partnerships with OBGYN offices, baby product stores, or prenatal fitness centers to increase your exposure. - Location: Choosing a convenient and accessible location for your studio is crucial. High foot traffic areas, near hospitals or maternity clinics, can be ideal for visibility. With a better understanding of the competitive landscape, you can tailor your offerings to meet the specific needs of your target market. Step 2: Obtain Elective Ultrasound Training Although elective ultrasounds are non-medical, they still require proper ultrasound business training programs to ensure you understand how to safely and effectively operate ultrasound equipment. Look for elective ultrasound training courses that cover the fundamentals of ultrasound technology, image optimization, safety protocols, and customer service. Some programs offer specialized training in 3D/4D ultrasound imaging, which can give your business an edge over competitors. Additionally, make sure you hire trained and certified sonographers to perform the ultrasounds, as this will enhance the trust and confidence of your clients. Step 3: Consider the Costs of Starting an Ultrasound Business Starting an ultrasound business comes with several costs, from equipment to facility expenses. Here’s a breakdown of the typical costs: - Ultrasound equipment: High-quality 3D/4D ultrasound machines can cost anywhere between $20,000 and $100,000, depending on the features and technology. - Studio setup: You'll need to lease or purchase a space for your business. The costs will vary based on your location, but make sure the space is comfortable and inviting for expectant parents. - Licensing and insurance: Although elective ultrasounds are non-diagnostic, you may still need to comply with local regulations, which might include business licenses and liability insurance. - Marketing: Allocate part of your budget to advertising and online marketing to build awareness of your new business (more on this below). Take time to create a detailed business plan outlining these expenses and any additional costs that may arise, such as staffing, utilities, and office supplies. Step 4: Build a Strong Marketing Strategy Once your business is set up, you'll need a comprehensive ultrasound business marketing plan to attract clients. Here are some effective strategies: - Create a website: Ensure your website is SEO-optimized and mobile-friendly, as most expectant parents will search online for elective ultrasound services. Include key pages like service descriptions, pricing, FAQs, and testimonials. - Use social media: Platforms like Instagram and Facebook are excellent for showcasing heartwarming images and videos of your clients’ 3D/4D ultrasounds. Encourage clients to share their experiences online to help spread the word. - Partner with local businesses: Collaborate with baby-related businesses, OBGYNs, and maternity care providers to build a referral network. Offer special discounts for first-time customers through these partners. - Host open house events: Consider hosting events or free ultrasound demonstrations to introduce your services to the community. This is a great way to engage potential customers and build rapport. These ultrasound business marketing tips can help you build a strong client base from the beginning and ensure steady growth over time. Step 5: Explore Ultrasound Franchises If you're looking for a way to simplify the startup process, consider opening an ultrasound franchise. Many established elective ultrasound franchises offer turnkey business solutions, including training, equipment, and marketing support. While buying into a franchise comes with initial fees and ongoing royalty payments, the brand recognition and proven business model can give you a head start in a competitive market. Research franchise opportunities in the elective ultrasound space and weigh the pros and cons before deciding whether this is the right path for you. Step 6: Provide an Unforgettable Client Experience Offering elective ultrasound services is about more than just the ultrasound image—it's about creating an emotional and memorable experience for your clients. Here are a few tips to enhance the client experience: - Comfortable environment: Design your studio to feel warm and welcoming. Consider comfortable seating, soft lighting, and calming décor to help expectant parents feel relaxed. - Personalized keepsakes: Offer keepsake items such as printed ultrasound images, digital recordings, or even heartbeat bears (stuffed animals that play the sound of the baby’s heartbeat). - Flexible packages: Create a range of packages to accommodate different budgets and preferences, from basic ultrasound sessions to premium packages that include multiple sessions or gender reveal services. By providing a delightful experience, you’ll encourage repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals, which are crucial for long-term success. Final Thoughts and Call to Action Starting an elective ultrasound business can be a fulfilling way to combine entrepreneurship with the joy of helping parents bond with their unborn child. With the right planning, ultrasound business training, and effective marketing strategies, you can build a thriving business that provides a valuable service to expectant parents in your community. Building Your Dream Fitness Hub: Full Commercial Gym Setup in India
Setting up a full commercial gym in India is an exciting venture that requires careful planning, quality equipment, and strategic design. Whether you are opening a fitness studio or a large-scale commercial gym, selecting the right equipment and setup is crucial to providing a premium experience for your members. In this blog, we will explore the essential aspects of creating a successful full commercial gym setup in India, with tips on selecting equipment, layout considerations, and industry insights.
Tumblr media
1. Understanding the Importance of a Full Commercial Gym Setup
A well-equipped gym can make all the difference in attracting members and retaining them. A full commercial gym setup encompasses a wide variety of equipment, including strength training machines, cardio machines, free weights, benches, and more. The key is to balance quality, functionality, and diversity to cater to the needs of all types of gym-goers.
2. Choosing the Right Equipment
When it comes to commercial gym setups, durability and efficiency are non-negotiable. Investing in high-quality, professional-grade equipment ensures your gym can handle heavy daily usage without wear and tear. Essential categories include:
Cardio Machines: Treadmills, cross trainers, exercise bikes, and rowing machines are crucial for members focused on cardiovascular health.
Strength Training Equipment: From multi-station machines to free weights like dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells, strength training options must be varied to meet different fitness goals.

Zoning the Gym: Divide the gym into different zones for cardio, strength training, stretching, and functional fitness. This makes it easier for members to navigate the space based on their workout preferences.
Space Efficiency: While maximizing the number of machines, ensure you leave enough room for members to perform exercises safely. Avoid clutter, especially in free weight areas where members need space for movements.
Aesthetic and Ambience: A visually appealing gym with appropriate lighting, ventilation, and mirrors can significantly enhance the workout experience and create an inviting environment.
4. Factors to Consider for a Full Commercial Gym Setup in India
Establishing a successful gym in India requires an understanding of local preferences and market demands. Here are some factors to consider:
Member Demographics: Cater to the specific fitness needs of your target demographic, whether it be general fitness, weight loss, bodybuilding, or wellness.
Market Competition: Evaluate other gyms in your area to understand what equipment and services they offer, and differentiate your gym with unique features such as advanced machines or wellness programs.
Maintenance and After-Sales Service: Reliable customer service and maintenance are essential to keep your equipment in top condition. Partner with suppliers who offer strong after-sales support, ensuring that any technical issues are resolved promptly.
5. Cost Considerations and ROI
Setting up a full commercial gym in India is a significant investment. Searching for critter gyroids in the snow
Snow’s still on the ground but it looks like that’s the last of the winter storms. The weather’s been unusually on the warmer side this week, though not enough to melt all the snow, but that means we can hang outside for a bit. Critter gyroids have popped up around the area so that gives us another reason to venture in the great outdoors after being cooped up inside for a long while.
After the last storm kinda took us by surprise I was kinda worried that we would have to cancel this event if the weather doesn’t improve. Luckily things worked out in our favor so that means we get to enjoy the snow for much longer without worrying about freezing our asses off. Had things not worked out, not only the gyroid event would be postponed, Dixie, Raiden, and company would probably end up stuck somewhere and that wouldn’t be good, especially since they came all the way up here for a reason.
Dixie made good on her promise to bring Lingxia and Nabai to the camp as well as invite Atsushi along. Raiden happened to be in the area and tagged along. Qingmei’s birthday is coming up so she’s hoping to make something with the gyroids considering that cute critters is totally something Qingmei would dig.
It’s nice to see the Bamboo siblings again along with Atsushi - a far too long awaited reunion, they said. Dixie was hoping to finally introduce me to Fuzi in person but something came up so he couldn’t make it. Part of it has to do with his engagement being called off. As it turns out Lingxia was right about his fiance being bad news -  in other words, he dodged a bullet there.
I’ve heard not so good things about Fuzi’s ex, mainly through Lingxia, who straight up doesn’t like her. Nabai didn’t have much of an opinion on her until recently but he didn’t quite get on with her either. Raiden however knew her in the past and there’s a damn good reason why she doesn’t get invited to family gatherings. She basically invited herself over the holidays to show off Fuzi while Lingxia and Nabai reluctantly tagged along. While that night sucked, it was an eye opening experience in which now the siblings know exactly who to avoid because seeing how she treated her family was uncomfortable. Yikes.
Raiden and Lingxia said that she was the kind of person who seemed to take pleasure in bullying those who she considers as beneath them, which was why her family stopped inviting her home. At some point Fuzi called her out on her behavior and she laughed it off, apparently thinking he wasn’t serious, and that was when he realized that things weren’t gonna work out between them. Good for him for ditching her and according to his siblings, he seems a lot more relaxed and happier since the breakup.
As for Lingxia and Nabai, they’ve been busy with the usual, though they can rest easier now that they no longer have a questionable future in-law to worry about. Lingxia has taken up pottery along with Libby so they’ve been making a lot of stuff. She gave me and Daisy Jane a handmade mug - I got pink swirls and Daisy got blue swirls, which is totally on brand for us - and I’ve been using it a lot. Lingxia mentioned falling into a pottery rabbit hole and binging on various artists like Kati - she was surprised when I told her that one of her favorite artists isn’t too far from here. I’m sure I can arrange something to get Kati, Lingxia, and maybe Libby together!
For Atsushi, it’s more of the same for him too. Now with three kids, things have been a little hectic but by now they’ve calmed down a bit. He’s still keeping up with his music, especially since he has his own studio, meaning a friend of his has a spare room so he can have a professional setup. He’s also been trying to keep up with streaming on a semi-regular basis and those have always been entertaining. He wants me, Daisy Jane, and Cheyenne to join him one day - we’re still working out the details on that - so that’ll be fun (and chaotic!).
He showed us a lot of pics of Pearl that haven’t been posted online yet and she’s so cute! As kinda expected, there were a few minor complications when she was born - nothing too serious thankfully - but after a rough couple weeks because of sleepless nights, everything’s good. Himeko is slowly getting back on her feet without overexerting herself. Bick and Coral are just as rambunctious as ever so it’s a good thing that Nanako and Minato are there to help out. Kayo and Kaiji have come to visit a few times since Pearl was born and with Kayo around, the kids are never bored.
Raiden updated us on the situation regarding Chihu, Sunni, and Nara. They’re staying with the demon slayers instead of going back to the city. For now they managed to get Nara’s parents to fuck off and they don’t know she’s with them so the less they know, the better. Chihu has been training with the others since he’s skilled in combat and it’s probably best to keep him busy. Also, with Lian and Dainn having to take it easy because of health issues, they could use the extra help.
She says Chihu and Sunni are all right, still a little much sometimes, but at least they’ve adjusted to the new living situation. Nara’s making slow progress, taking things one day at a time. While the doctors reassured her that she’s young and strong, the stroke left significant damage, meaning that she can’t live independently. As expected, she’s depressed about it but she’s slowly come to accept things as they are, mainly because there’s nothing much anyone can do about it other than to carry on.
Raiden says that despite being seen as a wimp by most, Nara’s a lot stronger than she looks considering the shit she has to put up with. From what I’ve heard about Nara, the fact that she’s still alive and kicking says more about her than those who put her down. Chihu did say that even though she doesn’t look like it, she knows how to put up a fight while trembling. I really hope she’s doing all right.
Finding gyroids in the snow is a different experience because it feels more like digging for treasure. Even though it has gotten a bit warmer there’s still some ice so we got some ice pics and extra warm gloves. It’s a good thing that most of the gyroids we found were clustered together so we don’t have to spend too much time freezing our hands. At least the ice isn’t hard to get off once we get it out of the snow.
With Atsushi around, there’s bound to be a couple of snowball fights. Raiden and Lingxia can get quite competitive while Nabai and Dixie are great at strategizing against those two. Making snowballs also helped us find buried gyroids as well as keep us moving so the cold doesn’t get to us.
When it gets too cold we warm up by the fire with hot cider Dixie got from Cinnastar, a place known for their spices. She hopes to take me there one day just to check out their shops and fill our spice cabinets. They’re a bit on the pricey side but Dixie says they’re worth it, especially when you wanna treat yourself. Considering how good the cider is, I’m intrigued! I’m no connoisseur but sometimes you just can tell when something’s top tier, or at least better than the usual.
While the gyroids are thawing out we’ve been playing video games and baking cookies. Dixie taught us this chai cookie recipe that turned out really good - the only problem being that if you make it with anything other than Cinnastar’s spices, it won’t be the same. At least they’re not hard to make and it’ll still be good either way.
Atsushi, Nabai, and Lingxia have been doing a lot of catching up. Since the siblings have a bit of free time, they’re gonna stop by Atsushi’s place before heading home since they haven’t visited in a while. Atsushi keeps bugging Nabai about how they should hang out more, not just with him but their other friends too. Nabai says he’s trying and Lingxia can vouch for that, but life gets busy. After all he’s got a city to run and Atsushi’s a family man so yeah, it’s hard to keep up sometimes. Trying to keep up with friendships as an adult can be tricky.
After the gyroids were thawed and cleaned, we got started on crafting some things. Raiden made Qingmei a cute husky plushie that I’m sure she’ll love. She also made plushies for the others back home - so far she’s made a wolf for Chihu, a tiger for Sunni, and she’s planning to start on a kitten for Nara tomorrow.
It looks like the plushies are the most popular - not that I’m surprised, they’re very cute! Atsushi, with help from Daisy Jane, is making some for the kids and once that’s done he hopes to get started on the cushions for his mom and Himeko. Lingxia is working on the tea set - she plans to make three, one for herself and the other two for friends. Dixie’s also working on the tea set after finishing crafting the rug. Nabai made a tanuki plushie and a trinket box and is planning to get started on the afghan tomorrow.
As for me, I’ve been making plushies and currently debating on whether to start the cushion or afghan tomorrow. I’ll figure it out tomorrow- after all, it’ll depend on if we get a good haul of gyroids or not since the weather might end up being unpredictable.

OTXO roguelite port may be an option
Tumblr media
OTXO top down shooter game shows hope for Linux along with the Windows PC release. Due to further details from developer Lateralis. Which is due to make its way onto Steam this April. Coming next from Super Rare Originals is OTXO. Developed by Lateralis, the developer behind Dogworld, which does have 96% Very Positive reviews on Steam. Now getting ready to release a fast-paced and dark roguelite. Due to offering precise but savage gunplay and time-bending slow motion on April 20th. That release is also due to arrive on Windows PC. But, there is some hope for Linux. Since reaching out to Lateralis via Discord, "no Linux build is planned, but if the game does well enough it can certainly become an option." Yes, this may trigger some people, but it's not a "no" from the developer. Who also explains that GameMaker Studio 2 is being used for development. The upside, GM2 does offer solid Proton support, since its Linux offering is primarily Ubuntu. Which should work nicely for Steam Deck players.
OTXO - Release Date Trailer

Tons of replayability — OTXO will take the player through 8 areas with random rooms. There are also over 150 hand-crafted rooms built in the game. No two runs of the game will be the same.
Customization — Find the setup that’ll help you break the cycle with a range of unlockable weapons. There over 100 abilities you can acquire from the game’s obscure bartender.
Playstyle — With the slow-mo mechanic, Focus, at your disposal, OTXO will make you feel the power and control. However, be careful due to the variety of enemy types thrown in your way. Since this can quickly turn the tides of the combat if you don’t adapt fast.
Soundtrack  Fully immerse yourself into the brutal noir-esque murder ballet. All thanks to the gritty pulse pumping soundtrack right from the developer himself.
OTXO is an impressive looking top down shooter game. Due to arrive on Windows PC, with enough sale Linux too. But there is certainly that Proton option, should you choose. So be sure to Wishlist the game on Steam.

Have you seen the post going around about the zoom class with one guy and his full streamer setup vs the guy whose just in the middle of the woods? I know you have a prompt list rn but I’m just saying there’s a sternclay fic in there somewhere...
It is! Here you go!
Life is better with order. Or, at the very least, with some attempt at patterns, organization, or consistency.
Which is why Stern has carefully arranged his desk, his chair, and his equipment in the background. Streaming as a hobby and a side hustle means he has some (okay, a lot) of practice making his digital self look just right. He needs to make a good impression on the first day of the semester.
Unlike some people.
“Holy shit man, are you in the woods?” Duck, the guy in a “Monongahela National Forest” shirt, grins as he asks this of another student whose screen consists of a forest clearing, a log, and the name “Barclay.”
“Yeah. Hang on, lemme finish getting the phone balanced.”
“Dude, that’s like, way better than my background” this comes from Jake, in front of a poorly rendered half-pipe.
“Can’t really take credit for it, just where I ended up.” Barclay sits down, and Stern gets his first look at a man so tall he barely fits in the frame, with a short, coppery beard and an honest-to-god man-bun.
Damn west coast schools.
“How is your battery going to last long enough for class?” Stern leans back in his chair, certain Barclay will have “battery trouble” halfway through as an excuse to cut out early.
Barclay smiles, lifting up a small green and black rectangle, “solar battery. Not everyone needs fancy gadgets for school.” He aims a pointed stare at Sterns set-up.
“It’s important to have the right equipment.”
“Whatever you say, man.” He lifts a cup of iced coffee into the frame, sipping it through a straw. It’s the picture of relaxation, as if nothing is wrong in the world. As if this is all totally normal.
Stern wants to reach through the  screen and slap some sense into him. Preferably while he’s shirtless.
He chalks that thought up to not having gotten laid since last December and pulls up his note taking software as Professor Chicane enters the room.
------------------------------------
Private Chat 9/20/20
Duck (he/him): I timed it, we’re already at ten minutes of arguing.
Indrid (he/him): I know Ned enjoys their demonstrating the different modes of rhetoric, but this is a bit extreme.
Duck: To be fair, Joe does seem kinda uptight.
Indrid: Yes, but Barclay should know by now that zeroing in on him during our practice debates only results in this.
Duck: Yeah. Oh shit, are they for real wrapping up you think?
Indrid: We can only hope. Skype me tonight?
Duck: Of course, sugar.
--------------------------------------
What is Joseph’s problem? He’s got a set-up that would make a pro-vlogger jealous, what looks to be a well-lit apartment with some houseplants and the kind of coffee-cups that are weirdly lacking in personality. His clothes are immaculate, his hair slicked back as if he;s in a business meeting rather than an online class in the midst of a chaotic world. So why is he acting like everything is terrible? And why is he always arguing with Barclay, when there are plenty of other people in the class to disagree with?
“Now” Mr. Chicane’s voice booms through the tiny speaker on his phone, “if you all had a chance to read over the instructions, we will begin the first mock debate. Do we have any volunteers?”
He and Joe raise their hands at the same time. Mr. Chicane raises an eyebrow.
“While I appreciate your eagerness, gentlemen, I would like two other volunteers this time.”
That’s fine by him. It’s not like he likes listening to Joseph get all wound up and passionate, making everyone on the call sit up and take notice of him. It’s not as if he enjoys being the center of his focus.
Nope, not at all.
-----------------------------
Private chat 10/11/20
Jake (he/him): Dudes, did you see who got paired up on the final project?
Aubrey (she/her): Chicane must be getting them back for all the times they’ve hijacked discussions.
Duck (he/him): Man, for their sake I hope it works out.
Indrid (he/him): This is going to be a disaster.
--------------------------------------
“Are you out of your mind!” Stern is talking before Barclay’s video is fully on.
“Nope. And you don’t have to yell, my speaker works just fine.”
“You’re outside, for all I know there’s a ton of ambient noise.”
Barclay, phone obviously in his hand as he walks through the trees, groans.
“And don’t try to derail this; how can you possibly suggest I come out there so we can do the project in person? We’re supposed to be limiting travel and gatherings.”
“Look, Joseph, we both agree that trying to generate our own cryptid hoax is the best way to demonstrate all the techniques Ned wants us too, right?”
“Yes” he hides his answer behind the rim of his coffee mug.
“We’ll do a way better job if we work in the same space. And if it makes you feel any better, I haven’t had any human contact in three weeks; all quarantined up, unlike whatever you’ve been doing in the city.”
He sets the mug down with a thunk, “I haven’t been out in a month. And before that was only for one grocery run and a hospital visit.”
“Uhhh-”
“I cut my hand cooking. So. Yeah.”
Literal crickets chirp, courtesy of Barclay’s end of the line, as the silence stretches on.
“If it helps, it’s real easy to stay isolated here, and I’ve still got utilities and everything.”
“And you’re not subsisting only on MREs or granola or something?”
A deep chuckle, the kind that makes his skin prickle, “Nope. That much I can promise.”
Stern glances around the studio apartment, clean and empty.
“What’s your address?”
------------------------------------
Look, all Stern is going to say is that he’s seen and read plenty of stories that start with a cabin in the woods and none of them end well. Which is why he’s still sitting in his car, parked beside a beat-up Subaru, rather than knocking on the door.
Breathe in, five counts. Out for four. Repeat four times.
Waiting for him on the door is a note.
Joseph,
Key under mat, make yourself at home.
Barclay.
He brings in his bags (a matching set of three, a gift from his aunt last year), placing them in the tiny guest room. It’s not much more than a bed, a dresser, and a tiny table. But there’s a heating unit below the window looking out into the woods, which is pretty pleasant. He’ll be keeping the blinds closed at night, though; he hates the thought of something being able to look in.
Stern’s busy evaluating the laundry closet when the front door opens.
“Hey, glad you found the place okay.”
Barclay stands in the doorway, a basket full of fruit in one hand. He’s remarkably kempt for a man living in the woods and that, combined with the deep voice being even richer in person and the fact Stern has to actually look up to meet his eyes, has him stumbling for words.
“Your directions were very thorough. Thank you. Um. I put my things in there, should I, um-”
“I can give you the grand tour.” The taller man sets the basket on the dining table, notices Sterns puzzled expression “there’s a piece of property about a mile thataway that has orchards they don’t really use. They let me come and pick whenever i want, less for them to clean up.”
Barclay keeps up a steady monologue as he shows him the cabin. The lower level is the living room and dining area, a kitchen which leads onto the back deck, Sterns room, and a bathroom. As the cabin is A-frame, the upstairs is Barclay’s room, all dark wood and pine colored plaid. It’s as Barclay is telling him about the woodpecker that sometimes nests in the eaves that he realizes why he’s talking so much.
He’s nervous.
Neither of their nerves improve when he gets to his last point of order.
“Uh, so, the bathroom downstairs is only a half-bath.”
“So...if I want to shower, which I do, I have to come up here.”
“Yeah.” Barclay scratches the back of his neck, “sorry. I don’t, like, sleep naked or anything so we should be fine.”
“Disappointing.” Stern sighs, only to sail past sarcastic and land face first in sincere.
Barclay blushes, then shrugs, “Trust me, after the first night, you’ll see why.”
Stern does. He’s warm as long as he’s in bed, but the moment he ventures into the bathroom in the middle of the night he’s cocooned in cold.
The morning brings cinnamon and coffee on the draft coming under the door. He plods into the kitchen in search of caffeine, finds Barclay in an pron, the counter covered in trays of dough.
“Morning!”
“Morning. Coffee-”
“Right there, sugar and stuff’s in the cabinet above it, cream and such is in the fridge.”
Blessedly, there’s heavy cream to be found, and soon he’s sipping from an enamel mug emblazoned with a UFO made of veggies.
“Is this all for your job?” Barclay mentioned he was a cook during an icebreaker.
“Yep. Way it works is I bust my ass baking once or twice a day, and Thacker, who works with Mama at the Lodge in town, comes and takes them over there. Normally I’d just be there but, well, y’know.”
“Everything is on fire? Figuratively, I mean.”
“Sometimes literally too, but yeah.”
As he’s turning to grab his clothes and head showerward, Barclay adds, “You a scone man, coffecake man, or a cinnamon roll man?”
“Coffeecake?” It comes out hesitant.
“There’s no right answer, man.” Barclay sounds amused, “what do you want?”
“Cake, definitely.”
“Cool. I’ll save you a slice.”
Once he’s showered and on the wi-fi, his day runs like normal; one lecture, reading, a research paper, his initial half of their project, and working either his copy-editing or transcription job in between, and planning his next stream. Barclay comes and goes, stops now and then to see if he needs anything, leaves a sandwich in front of him around dinner time. Then it’s time to crawl under the covers and dream of a less-stressful world.
The next day, just before one, Barclay taps him on the shoulder.
“Ready for class?”
“Yes…” He gestures to his laptop and notebook.
“C’mon, join me out here, it’s way nicer, and we can share the phone.”
“Barclay, it’s  a nonsensical way to attend class, just stay in here with me! Even this set-up has to be better than the woods.”
“This set up. You mean my house?” All the friendliness leaves hi voice.
“Yes. Look, I agreed to come out because you’re right, if we want to ace this thing that’s worth sixty percent of our grade, this is the place to do it; I don’t have to go along with the whole self-sufficient woodsman aesthetic while I’m here. “
“Yeah, I’d say you’re pretty far from self-sufficient. See you in class.”
Stern stews through the entire session, but where he’d usually find something Barclay says to latch onto, he instead gnaws on himself. Why didn’t he just go with him? Why snap at someone who’s been nothing but nice since he got here?
Whatever the answer, how can he fix it?
---------------------------------------
Barclay tromps back through the twilight, done with his second class of the day. If Joseph is in the main house, he plans to ignore him until tomorrow morning. That all goes out the window with the clank of dishes from the kitchen.
Peering in reveals the other man bent over, pulling a casserole from the oven. He waits to announce his presence until Joseph is out of the danger zone, enjoying the view as he does.
“Smells good.”
Blue eyes flick over to him as Joseph opens drawers, “it’s mostly cheese and chips, so I’m not surprised.”
“Servers are in that one.”
“Thank you. Nacho pie?” He scoops some into a bowl, holding it out.
“Sure. Uh, look, Joseph I-”
Joseph holds up the server, “Wait. Before you apologize I, um, I wanted to say I’m sorry for my comments. And for being so...me-ish.” He sighs, staring at the utensil in his grip, “I’ve always been a little bit tense, tried to be polite and effective and friendly in spite of it. The last six months made that harder to do. I don’t love it when I can’t be organized, when normal systems go out of place. But that’s no excuse for being rude to you, even before you invited me here. You’re just so...you’re always so calm and relaxed, like nothing was wrong and I just honed in on that way more than made sense. I’m sorry.”
“If it makes you feel better, I kinda did the same thing. You’re always so put together, it looked like you had this organized life in the midst of this whole shitstorm. I feel lik everything is slipping away, like my world is just this cabin. I mean, I assumed you were seeing friends in the city, while I haven’t seen Mama in person since April. So” he sets the bowl down, rests his hand on Joseph’s shoulder, “I’m sorry too.”
Joseph laughs, softly, “turns out we both had failures of imagination, huh?”
“Yeah” he runs a hand over Joseph's back, “now come on, this dinner’s not gonna eat itself.”
-----------------------------------
“You sure you don’t wanna wear the bigfoot costume?”
“Positive. Besides, it suits you.” Joseph finishes styling the fur on the head of the costume to look more realistic, “I just hope we get this done before that storm comes in; as mush as the rain would add to the mood of the scene, that’ll be hell to dry and you’ll be miserable. So, go lurk over there while I finish up getting the camera settings where they need to be.”
“Yes sir” Barclay pops the head on, leaves crunching as moves to his appointed tree. He smiles as he watches Joseph fiddle with the camera; things have been so much better between them these last two weeks. They trade off cooking dinner, study side by side, and watch movies or play games in the warmth of the heater. They have a similar sense of humor and taste in books, and are tidy to boot.   Joseph’s even come with him to listen to lectures in the woods, the pair sharing a thermos of coffee under the astonished gaze of their classmates. There’s just one problem.
Barclay’s buried crush is now blooming in every direction. Animated, argumentative Joseph was attractive. Joseph, in all his moods and mannerisms, is devastatingly enchanting. He’s come close to telling him this, but the other man is his guest and also only here for another two and a half weeks, so a confession is setting himself up for heartbreak at worst and awkwardness at best.
He almost blew it last night when they were washing dishes (Joseph scrubs, Barclay dries and puts away).
“Last one.”
“Thanks, blue eyes.”
“What was that?”
“Uh, blue eyes? Like a, uh, a nickname?”
Joseph laughs, “Sounds like something from a Raymond Chandler book. I like it.”
On the plus side, if Joseph thinks it’s just a nickname and not a pet name, maybe Barclay can keep using it.
“Are you ready?’
He sticks up a hairy thumb and calls, “you know it, blue eyes.”
That same laugh as Joseph takes up his position. Maybe it’s the weird film over the costume’s eyes, but Barclay swears he sees a blush.
-------------------------
Stern trawls through the search results. Their video is getting some traction, with two cryptid hunter sites claiming it’s credible footage. He’s making note of how the information spread, which threads lead to belief and which to doubt, when Barclay calls from upstairs.
“Joseph? Little help?”
The other man is in the bathroom, and when Stern knocks he says, “Think the pilot light on the water heater went out again, all I’m getting is cold water. Can you go relight it?”
“Sure.” He gets to the stairs then, stops, “where’s the key to that closet?”
“Huh? Oh, shit, right, hang on” Barclay says at the same time as Stern’s “don’t worry, I can find it.”
Which is why the instant he turns back into the bedroom is the same instant Barclay steps out of the bathroom, blue towel around his waist.
Any blood that doesn’t head south goes instantly to Stern’s cheeks.
“You okay there, blue-eyes?”
“It’s completely unfair how good you look without a shirt.”
He clamps a hand over his mouth.
“Idn’t ean to ay at out oud” The mumbled explanation makes Barclay smirk.
“You like this, should see what’s under the towel.”
The unusually bold statement from Barclay kindles his own confidence.
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, big guy.”
“Who says I won’t.” Barclay sits down on the edge of the bed, nonchalant and leaning back on his hands, “got plenty of time to make good on them.”
“We literally don’t. I go back in a week and two days.”
Barclay toys with the lint on the towel, “you could stay. Through break, through next semester, for however long you wanted.”
“Do you mean that?”
A shy nod, “I like having you around, Joseph. Even beyond the huge fucking crush I have on you I...everything is a little better when you’re around.”
“I, um, I guess it could work. We know next semester is online too, and so is work, so…” there must be variables missing, something he’s not seeing, some reason this is too good to be true.
“You want some space away from shirtless me to think about it?”
“That’d be great.”
Barclay stands, hesitates, then plants a quick kiss on his forehead, “take all the time you need, blue eyes.”
------------------------------
Private Chat log 1/11/2021
Barclay (he/him): Did you see the look on Duck’s face when we turned up in frame together.
Joseph (he/him): Yes. Pretty sure Aubrey yelled something about him needing to pay up. I wonder what the bet was.
Barclay (he/him): Whatever it was, pretty sure I came out the biggest winner.
Stern snorts, trying not to blush on camera, and leans over to kiss his boyfriend on the cheek.

Results : The 93rd Academy Award Film Nominations (2021)
Tumblr media
After weeks and weeks of speculation, rumination over nominees, streaming service deep dives, high-priced rentals and brain-bending predictions, the moment of truth has finally arrived.  This year, despite the ceremonies being split between the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, the presentation was wonderfully cohesive.  Several stars stepped up to preface each award, present the nominees and name the winners, and in-between these moments, Questlove had my dream gig as Academy Awards DJ.  For one of the first public forays in a world creeping closer to a post-COVID-19 reality, the show came off exceptionally smooth and well-presented.
Cicely Tyson, Ian Holm, Max Von Sydow, Cloris Leachman, Yaphet Koto and many more were recognized in light of their respective passings in 2020 courtesy of Angela Bassett and a moving Stevie Wonder selection, As.  Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture & Television Fund each received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for their long-established efforts, especially those during the COIVD-19 pandemic.  Announcements were made for a Steven Spielberg-directed update of West Side Story, the long-delayed In The Heights and Summer of Soul, the directorial debut of Questlove (who also provided his DJ services for the evening).  The show even had a couple of hilarious moments, including Daniel Kaluuya embarrassing his mother on national TV and a quiz show turned censor’s nightmare involving Questlove, Lil’ Rel Howery, Andra Day, Kaluuya and Glenn Close.  Several of the evening’s awards also allowed for stars and crew to voice their opinions, concerns and wishes about cultural ills, the lack of inclusion and how we should treat our fellow man.
While we all look forward to seeing what surprises each Academy Awards ceremony holds, what we really come for are the awards.  This year, I put in the work more than ever, and even I found myself surprised by some of the evening’s outcomes.  Here are my thoughts on the evening and the winners.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Best Picture
Tumblr media
Winner : Nomadland Prediction : Minari
While I’m not surprised that Nomadland took the top award of the night, I am a bit sad that Minari ended up having to walk away almost empty-handed in light of this, especially seeing that Another Round took the Best International Feature award.  Hopefully Minari can find an audience in light of this snub, but despite how bitter I sound, I am happy for the success that Nomadland has found this award’s season.
Tumblr media
Best Director
Tumblr media
Winner : Chloé Zhao, Nomadland Prediction : Chloé Zhao, Nomadland
Chloé Zhao has been the belle of the ball this award’s season, and her successful run culminated in a strong showing at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.  With her next venture being a step into the MCU via The Eternals, let’s see if she can bring her sensibility (and award-winning credibility) into the world of the popcorn flick.
Tumblr media
Best Actor
Tumblr media
Winner : Anthony Hopkins, The Father Prediction : Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
As Joaquin Phoenix said so prophetically prior to handing out this award (and I loosely quote), “it’s a shame that only one person can win”.  That being said, as great as Anthony Hopkins was in The Father, it’s amazing to me that this award did not go to Chadwick Boseman.  Some might say that giving it to him posthumously would not be sincere, but cards on the table, Boseman gave a powerhouse performance that deserved continued recognition right up to the top award.  The Academy Awards has a long history of “interesting” choices, and this is one of the most memorable to date.
Tumblr media
Best Actress
Tumblr media
Winner : Frances McDormand, Nomadland Prediction : Viola Davis, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
After Andra Day upset the balance at the Golden Globes, I had my doubts that the formidable Frances McDormand would garner any awards for Nomadland, despite her stellar track record.  Viola Davis looked like the frontrunner headed into the night, as she was poised to make Oscar history, which further narrowed McDormand's chances.  Once Nomadland won Best Picture, however, it seemed like the wave had shifted, and sure enough, the statue went to McDormand.  This was a monster of a cateogry, and her win was certainly a well-deserved one.
Tumblr media
Best Supporting Actor
Tumblr media
Winner : Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah Prediction : Lakeith Stanfield, Judas and the Black Messiah
In one of the most controversial categories leading into the evening, Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield found themselves battling one another in the Best Supporting Actor category, which raised the question of whether or not Judas and the Black Messiah even had a lead.  This was further muddied by what seemed like a sure-thing victory for Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category (which ended up being quite the surprise category, to say the least).  With Kaluuya having the momentum coming into the night via a series of previous wins for his role as Fred Hampton, his win on the night was not a surprise victory, and his presence definitely helped make the show a memorable one.
Tumblr media
Best Supporting Actress
Tumblr media
Winner : Yuh-Jung Youn, Minari Prediction : Yuh-Jung Youn, Minari
In what ended up being my favorite moment of the night, Yuh-Jung Youn helped save Minari from a wholly disappointing showing with her formidable victory in the Best Supporting Actress category.  Her acceptance speech was what the Oscar ceremony is all about, with her sincerity and appreciation being massively sincere, including a wonderful acknowledgement of getting to meet award presenter Brad Pitt.
Tumblr media
Original Screenplay
Tumblr media
Winner : Promising Young Woman Prediction : Promising Young Woman
Had Promising Young Woman walked away empty-handed, it would have been a pure travesty.  Its subject matter, however, not to mention its unforgiving approach, made it a tough choice for any of the top awards outside of Best Original Screenplay, but in my opinion, it is exactly those same aspects that made it the shoo-in win for this category.  Hollywood has a long way to go before it can be honest about the type of people it supports, but giving a film like this one a spotlight can help make that a reality.
Tumblr media
Adapted Screenplay
Tumblr media
Winner : The Father Prediction : The Father
As one of the last films I ended up seeing in my pre-Academy Awards research, I was very curious to see how The Father would end up in regard to successes, and this was one of the categories that felt like a sure thing.  The passion and time spent on this play turned screenplay is evident for anyone who has seen this incredibly moving film, and while its other award of the night was definitely a shockwave of a closer, this award was certainly well-deserved and possibly expected.
Tumblr media
Animated Feature
Tumblr media
Winner : Soul Prediction : Soul
If there were a sure thing for the evening, this was the category.  Soul was the heavy favorite going into the night, and it did what it set out to do, which was win over everyone who had the pleasure of seeing it, including members of the Academy.
Tumblr media
Production Design
Tumblr media
Winner : Mank Prediction : News of the World
My curiosity of what kind of showing that Mank would have on the evening kept me in anticipation leading into the show, and while it didn’t garner any of the big awards, I am happy that the work put into capturing a bygone era was rewarded via its technical awards.  This one came as a surprise to me, but it was certainly not a bad choice.
Tumblr media
Costume Design
Tumblr media
Winner : Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Prediction : Emma
This award not only stood as a show of inclusion (something that the Academy has had to be aware of in the recent past), but a harbinger of possible results in the top acting awards.  Anytime that a film like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starts cleaning up in the tech spots, I start to look at it like a sort of consolation prize, and after the film’s leads not receiving awards for Best Actor or Best Actress, it seemed that this practice is still in effect.
Tumblr media
Cinematography
Tumblr media
Winner : Erik Messerschmidt, Mank Prediction : Erik Messerschmidt, Mank
As mentioned before, the aspect of Mank that really stood out to me was how David Fincher made his film feel authentically of the era it presents to us.  This immersion was created with the visuals and the sound, but with Sound of Metal being such a standout film centered around auditory stimulus, Mank felt like a longshot for that, but a sure shot for Best Cinematography.
Tumblr media
Editing
Tumblr media
Winner : Sound of Metal Prediction : The Trial of the Chicago 7
Sound of Metal had a very impressive night, and while it won the award everyone expected it to, seeing it win the Best Editing award as well only stands as a testament to how well put together the film is (no pun intended).
Tumblr media
Makeup and Hairstyling
Tumblr media
Winner :  Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Prediction : Pinocchio
As mentioned in my Best Costume Design thoughts, while this award was well-deserved, it felt like a possible setup for a letdown later on in the evening,  It’s tough to think of an award in terms of what it may mean for a future loss, but that’s the way the award show cookie crumbles.
Tumblr media
Sound
Tumblr media
Winner : Sound of Metal Prediction : Sound of Metal
If Soul didn’t exist, then this award would’ve been the one that felt like the most obvious choice.  Capturing the world of deafness in film is not only incredibly difficult, but daring as well, as audio is one of the key aspects to creating the immersion needed to appreciate a film, but the sound design of this film brought us into a world many of us may never experience directly, and for that, it deserves to be awarded.
Tumblr media
Visual Effects
Tumblr media
Winner : Tenet Prediction : Love and Monsters
Tenet couldn’t go empty-handed this awards season, and with much of the competition being on a different cinematic and studio level (outside of Disney’s Mulan), Tenet certainly had the highest profile.  It is cool, however, to see a film (and director) so dedicated to practical and in-camera effects win the highest award in the game.
Tumblr media
Score
Tumblr media
Winner : Soul Prediction : Mank
In what continuously became the most hilarious occurrence to me from award show to award show, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross once again found themselves playing second banana to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.  While I have no issues with Soul winning this award, I think time may find that Mank’s incredibly period-authentic original score was overlooked in its brilliance.
Tumblr media
Song
Tumblr media
Winner : Fight for You (Judas and the Black Messiah) Prediction : Fight for You (Judas and the Black Messiah)
After a disappointing snub at the Golden Globes, it felt like H.E.R. my find herself walking away empty-handed for her standout work in the creation of Fight For You.  The song is not only a strong performance and recording by its own merit, but it captures the spirit and essence of Judas and the Black Messiah in a way that the other nominees fall short of.
Tumblr media
Documentary Feature
Tumblr media
Winner : My Octopus Teacher Prediction : Collective
While a compelling film, I find myself baffled at the continued victories that My Octopus Teacher has racked up for the year.  Despite my lack of connection to it, it is impossible to ignore how deep and vast the film’s connection to the populous at large has been, and with an Oscar under its belt (along with the numerous other statues it has collected), it stands to likely grow a bigger and more supportive fanbase.
Tumblr media
International Feature
Tumblr media
Winner : Another Round (Denmark) Prediction : Better Days (Hong Kong)
Not only was Minari robbed of wins in both the Best Picture and Best International Feature category, but the film that did win the Best International Feature category felt like a bit of a superficial choice.  With a film about bullying, a film about the failures of the healthcare system and a film about the lack of humanity during war all in the running (and all pitch-perfect films, to boot), a film about a group of entitled alcoholics being a poor influence to kids became leader of the pack.  Categories like this one are a chance to broaden American awareness of international art and culture, but this award feels like one of the bigger missteps of the evening.
Tumblr media
Animated Short
Tumblr media
Winner : If Anything Happens I Love You Prediction : Genius Loci
While Genius Loci was the more moving piece to me, If Anything Happens I Love You is certainly a film with a nuanced and artistic approach to an American epidemic that is public shootings (a school shooting, in this case).  While my heart feels the loss of this choice, my head is happy that such a moving and heartfelt film may get the chance to touch the lives of a broader audience.
Tumblr media
Documentary Short
Tumblr media
Winner : Colette Prediction : Do Not Split
First and foremost, all respect to Colette for the story it tells and the spotlight it puts on both its titular figure and the way that people of multiple generations dance around facing the Holocaust head on.  All that being said, Do Not Split was way too important of a film to go unawarded, especially in light of rising violence against members of the Asian-American community.
Tumblr media
Live-Action Short
Tumblr media
Winner : Two Distant Strangers Prediction : Two Distant Strangers
Definitely one of the categories that got the winner absolutely right.  Sadly, the film becomes more and more relevant with each passing day, with several Police-based shootings having taken place since the George Floyd trail conclusion.  Bravo to Joey Bada$$ and company for making such a brave and bold piece of art.
Tumblr media
I ended up predicting of 9 the 23 films correct, which is not nearly as good in comparison to how confident I felt going into the night.  There were lots of surprises throughout the evening, especially in the final stretch, and I’m sure these decisions will be debated heavily for the next few weeks.  Luckily, we’ve got ourselves plenty of months to start taking in the 2021 releases, and with two-thirds of the year left to look forward to, it’ll be fun when we all reconvene to do this again in 2022.

Camera Zones & Transitions
Yo, why am I suddenly posting again? Is it because current events have me going a bit stir-crazy? Maybe. It’s been, what, over five years since I last attempted an informational text post? Bear with me here.
Anyway, here’s a brief explanation so I’ve got something to show the few people who have asked me about how to handle camera movement within and between “sub-zones” inside of a larger room.
Less about the coding specifics, and more about the general principles that can (hopefully) be applied to most any 2D game development software.
First step: Setup “Camera Zones.” There are a few different ways to handle this, but basically you just want to define coordinates of a point at the upper left of the zone, a point at the lower right, and a name/ID for the zone.
My method of choice, using Gamemaker Studio, is to make an invisible rectangular object that can be stretched out in the room editor, with the top-left and bottom-right corners of the object being the two points that define the zone (or, two separate objects, one for each corner).
Now, the camera object will have a value that can be set to the ID of any zone, and then can be told to clamp its movement to never move the view outside that zone.
You could even use this to improve performance by disabling or destroying enemies, projectiles, or objects outside of the currently active Camera Zone!
Next: “Transition Zones.” Essentially defined the same way as Camera Zones, but these will be doing something different (well, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a “zone”, it could just be a single line, but I find zones easier to visualize and work with, personally)
Defined for this “zone” are a few different Camera Zones that it can lead to. When the player goes through, it will set the camera to a new Camera Zone.
This is a bit abstract, so here’s a little visual representation of both types of zones:
Tumblr media
When the player exits the right of the Transition Zone (which would ideally be setup so the player doesn’t have to actually go completely off the side of the screen) the camera will switch from Zone 1 to Zone 2. Simple, yeah?
This will create the kind of effect you see in many classic games, where touching the side of the screen will scroll the camera over into another area. However, what if you wanted this transition to be more seamless, so the player isn’t venturing out into scary, unseen lands? Here’s another possible configuration:
Tumblr media
In this situation, the Camera Zones overlap, and the Transition Zones are entirely contained within the overlapping areas.
It may be a little bit tricky to get everything lined up right, but as long as the full camera view fits within the overlap of the Camera Zones from the middle of the Transition Zone, the switch between zones should be invisible to the player.
Here’s a working example, using a section from my own game:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fluid, uninterrupted camera movement. If you watch closely you can see the moment where the camera was too low for the lower bounds of the shorter second zone and shifts upwards slightly to fit, but this isn’t a huge problem (and could probably be avoided with the right level/zone layout, if it really bothers you).
Hopefully this helps someone!

Commission for Confidence, 5
Summary: Y/N has been struggling with her self-esteem for years. After incessant pushing from your best friend, Y/N decides to commission an artist to draw her, expecting everything to happen via Internet. However, when your phone is stolen, you try to cancel the commission, but Peter Parker has other ideas. He quickly becomes enraptured by you, and a friendship forms easily. Will it lead to something more? Or will your past fears get in the way?
A/N: Sorry for the wait, everyone! We caught up to what I had written, and I kinda fell into a funk, so I wasn’t writing that much. Anyway, I hope you like this chapter, I kinda agonized over it (I even drew out the apartment to try and figure out the logistics). Let me know what you think!!
Taglist: @pparkerwrites, @scatterbrainedgenius, @jordyns-library, @wildfirecracker, @pastlives-purplesouls
Word Count: 2155
Warnings: brief mentions of anxiety and depression, Peter being cute, awkwardness, probably too much detail about apartments, stuff about art, an AI
You chuckled nervously as you looked around the entrance to his apartment. It was a really nice place, especially for New York. It paid to work for Stark Industries, that was for sure. It was relatively open, not quite a studio apartment in its setup but akin to one, and there was a lovely view—via ceiling to floor windows—of the tops of a few buildings and the windows of a few others.
“Karen, lights,” Peter said as he toed off his shoes. The lights came on immediately, giving the apartment a warm and comforting glow.
“Karen?” you asked him, tilting your head in confusion as you began to remove your own shoes and place them by the door.
“Yes?” a feminine voice replied, making you jump in surprise.
“O-oh, hello?” you asked, unsure of what sort of social protocol came with talking to disembodied voices.
“Peter, is this a new friend?” the voice asked.
“Y-yeah,” Peter chuckled, patting you reassuringly on the back. “Karen is this AI that, uh, Tony and I developed. She’s kinda like Siri or Alexa, but better, in my opinion.”
“Ah,” you nodded in understanding. You cleared your throat a bit and said, “Um, Karen? Can I call you Karen?”
“Of course,” Karen replied. “Did you need anything?”
“Um, I’m Y/N,” you told the AI, “and I was wondering… how are you?”
“I’m wonderful, Y/N, thank you for asking,” she said with what seemed to be amusement or affection in her voice, though you weren’t sure. “Are you a new friend of Peter’s? He didn’t tell me he made a new friend.”
“Yeah, we’re friends,” you smiled at Peter, who blushed slightly. “Karen, what all can you do? If you don’t mind my asking.”
“Of course not. I can control all technology in the apartment, surf the web, read the temperature of the apartment and outside, and I’m connected to Peter’s phone and his place at Stark Industries, so he can ask me to do things while he’s out and about. And I can do many other things.”
“You’re so talented!”
“Peter, I like her. She has good taste.”
As heat gathered in your cheeks, Peter said, “She has the best taste. Actually, Y/N is going to be my newest model for some art! She commissioned me and I want to really explore the mediums to best capture her beauty.”
“It’s been awhile since you’ve done something like that, Peter,” Karen said. Peter’s ears turned red and he sheepishly avoided your gaze as he continued farther into his home.
You followed him in while he made a beeline to his kitchen, which was open; once you stepped into the apartment, there were three steps to the side and down to the wall. The kitchen was up the steps, and the counter that went between the kitchen and the rest of the apartment had a few stools placed there, safely away from the steps, to make a little breakfast bar sort of thing. Though at the moment, it looked to be a holding spot for a lot of mail.
“Ned’s out of town for work for a few more days, so his mail has been piling up,” Peter explained as he stuck his head into the fridge. It was almost like he was trying to cool off his cheeks. “I know most of his mail is junk, but it’s so much fun to watch his face when he sees the mail piled up like that, only to discover it’s mostly junk.”
“Hey, we all have our things,” you said with a shrug. You’d walked farther in, noticing that the living and dining rooms sort of blended together. There was a hallway between the kitchen and what you assumed to be Peter’s little art studio (judging by the easels and drying canvases).
“Do you want something to drink? I’ve got, uh, water, milk, orange juice, a beer, I could make coffee or tea, uh… Ned has like two cans of tomato juice, but I don’t know why, that stuff is not that good,” Peter’s voice said from the fridge.
“Um, water is fine. With a little ice, please?”
“No problem.”
You continued to look around, finding the décor to be fittingly Peter. The apartment itself was really nice, but the furniture betrayed that Peter and Ned were in their twenties. It wasn’t matching at all, but it managed to go together in an endearing sort of way. Instead of carpeting in the living room, there were rugs layered almost tastefully, and the cutoff is what separated the dining and living rooms. There was a bookshelf in the back corner of the living room that you itched to go explore, but you didn’t want to be rude (you knew how personal bookshelves could be).
You ventured a bit farther into the apartment, looking at the pictures on the wall. The wall to the left of the window, closer to the bookshelf, had framed photos. There were cute group photos that made you smile. Then, some people that were in the group photos had solo photos, very artfully done (you could tell that Peter had done them).
Your favorite photo was of a woman’s profile (perhaps it was his Aunt May?) as she looked upon a park with trees. You could see the emotions she was feeling in her eyes, and she truly looked to be at ease. And, something else you loved, was that the photo was set up so that it looked like she was looking out of the window at the colorful buildings outside. You could see her freckles, and the small lines around her mouth that showed she spent a lot of her life smiling. That fact, actually, you could tell by the photo itself.
“That’s my Aunt May,” Peter said from right behind you, making you physically jump in place. You steadied yourself against the wall with one hand while the other clutched your chest as you tried to lasso your bucking heart.
“Sorry,” he grinned at you, offering you a mug that had the Spider-Man logo on it, with ice and water inside. “Sorry about the mug, too,” he chuckled slightly, “the rest of the stuff is dirty, I forgot to actually turn on the dishwasher before I left.”
“Set it up and forgot to press start?” you asked. He nodded. “I do that all the time.”
“Yeah, it’s a pretty consistent occurrence with me!” he laughed.
You took the mug with a thank you and shuffled yourself over to the wall to the right of the window to see the stuff there. You went up the three little steps and onto the hardwood floor so you could see the stuff on the walls, but Peter’s “studio” actually began where he’d laid down a large tarp to protect the floors.
You focused on the wall as Peter nervously scampered towards the studio to occupy himself with something as you were engrossed with the artwork on the walls.
The artwork on the walls, framed and not, were absolutely stunning. You’d seen some of the work on his Instagram, but they were even better in person, if that was even possible. There were two or three gorgeous photos of landscapes, but they were surrounded by other pieces of all mediums.
You found your favorite piece from his Instagram on the wall, a watercolor-esque piece that, as you recalled from the Instagram post, was also done with watercolor pencils. It was as if Peter had been sitting on an incredibly tall building, looking out onto the water on a rainy day. It had a lot of grays, but it was still incredibly vibrant. Now that you could see it in person, you saw that there were the softest of purples and reds going into the harbor, and the faintest of yellows and oranges in the gray sky.
“Whoa, are you okay?” Peter asked, surprising you again.
“Hm?” You turned to him. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”
Peter cupped your cheek and rubbed his thumb across your cheekbone. It was then that you realized you had been crying.
Your entire body recoiled from Peter in shock, almost spilling the water from your mug, when you realized that is what he meant, quickly wiping your cheeks. “I am so sorry,” you stammered, shaking your head to revive yourself. “I’m sorry, wow, I didn’t even realize… This painting, it’s just, it was my favorite on your Instagram, and seeing it up close, I can see so much more than I could online. And it just, I guess it just reminds me of my journey through mental illness.”
Peter tilted his head, silently asking you to explain.
“This piece is kinda dreary, you know? I mean, you obviously do because you painted it, but, anyway.” You inhaled and tried to calm yourself. “So, it’s kinda dreary, and demure. Like how my brain has been for most of my life. But there’s still bright pieces, bright colors, coming through the grays. And those brighter colors also blend into the gray. It’s not two different entities, it all comes together to create one gorgeous painting. Like how all parts of my personality come together to make me, vibrant and living even with this pesky depression and anxiety I’ve always had.” You looked at Peter and smiled, noting his eyes widen and brighten. “You’re so talented, Peter.”
His face slowly morphed into a tomato and he kept glancing between the floor and your eyes. “I…” he began before clearing his throat. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” you smiled again.
“So,” he cleared his throat again, “do you want to check out the rest of the apartment, or do you want to kinda get to work, or?” He trailed off, looking out the window with furrowed brows. Your hands itched to smooth out the wrinkles, but you stopped yourself, instead thumbing the mug in your hands.
“Let’s get to work, how’s that?” you asked rhetorically. “Uh, how does this work?”
Peter chuckled and gently took your hand to lead you to the little “studio” he had setup. The back wall, which it shared with the hallway, had unfinished works spread across it, both hanging and leaning. You found that to be artistic in and of itself.
There was a big bookcase and several shelves that held supplies, and the back corner had piles of canvases and pieces of paper. One shelf was cramped and overflowing with sketchbooks. There was an easel that could be shifted around, and a stool for Peter to sit on while he worked. It appeared to be a cozy place for Peter to work; even if it was a bit small, it was moldable, easy to transform to Peter’s needs.
“I love this!” you said brightly as you looked around.
“Thanks,” Peter blushed a bit.
“So, how do you want me?” you asked as he deliberated in front of his supplies.
After a few moments of silence, Peter seemed to register what you said. He grabbed something you couldn’t quite see and was fiddling with it as he said, “Could you move the stool to be closer to the window and sit on it, please?”
“Sure,” you replied easily. You placed it around where you thought he wanted it and heaved yourself on, being careful not to overbalance and fall off. You held the mug in both hands, looking down at the slightly bobbing ice.
“Gorgeous,” Peter breathed loud enough for you to hear, and you looked up to see him now watching you, a camera wrapped around his neck. His blush was the most endearing thing you’d ever seen, and he quickly began to fiddle with his camera again.
“Photos first?” you asked, sipping your water to hide the smirk you’d created once you’d seen that adorable blush.
“Y-yeah,” he stuttered, stepping a bit closer. “I figured, well, if inspiration strikes in the middle of the night, I could always, you know, look at some photos.”
“Are you saying you don’t want me over in the middle of the night?” you asked boldly, raising a brow and trying to stop yourself from visibly freaking out at your actions.
If possible, his face reddened even more, and he nearly tripped over his feet. You chuckled lightly, sipping your water gingerly. Instead of saying anything, you let Peter regain his composure, though what happened next nearly made you spit out your water.
“Well, I wouldn’t want to wake you up and make you get out of my warm bed,” Peter said smoothly, the red slowly fading from his face.
You nearly choked on the water but managed to keep it in your mouth and in the mug, and you certainly didn’t miss Peter’s smirk. This was certainly going to be an interesting art partnership, and hopefully a long-lasting, laughter filled friendship would blossom as well. That was all you would let yourself hope for at that moment.
