Made of Win Pt 5
"You look nice tonight, Stephen," Matt said.
Stephen looked confused. "Can you… see it, somehow?"
"No." Matt smiled. "But Frank's temperature just went up point three degrees and his heartbeat is erratic, so I'm assuming."
Stephen looked at Frank.
Frank looked at Stephen.
Stephen turned back to Matt. "Thank you."

Understanding Acne
Before we delve into the fantastic acne treatments we offer, let's first understand what acne is. Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It often results in pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and in severe cases, painful cysts. Acne can affect people of all ages and can be triggered by various factors, including hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle.
The Daily Aesthetics Approach

Our team of experienced dermatologists and skincare experts takes the time to understand your unique skin type and concerns. We then tailor a treatment plan that addresses the root causes of your acne, ensuring long-lasting results.
Our Acne Treatment Options
Medical Grade Skincare Products: We offer a range of medical-grade skincare products that are specifically formulated to target acne-prone skin. These products are designed to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and promote skin healing.
Chemical Peels: Our chemical peel treatments exfoliate the skin's top layer, effectively removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores. This can significantly reduce acne breakouts and improve the overall texture of your skin.
Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that uses a specialized device to gently exfoliate the skin. It's excellent for treating acne scars and can help reduce the appearance of blemishes.
Acne Laser Therapy: Our advanced laser treatments target the sebaceous glands, reducing excess oil production and preventing future breakouts. This therapy is safe, virtually painless, and requires minimal downtime.
Prescription Medications: In some cases, prescription medications may be necessary to manage severe acne. Our dermatologists will assess your condition and recommend the appropriate medications if needed.

Many acne treatments are available in San Tan Valley, and differ from person to person. Some medications and treatments are more effective for milder cases of the condition, while other treatments are better for severe breakouts. Mild or moderate cases of acne (a few blemishes, whiteheads, and/or blackheads) can be erased with simple over-the-counter medications. However, for severe acne cases (red, swollen, often painful blemishes consisting of cysts and/or nodules), an array of treatments can work: including prescription topical or oral medications, antibiotics, a variety of light therapies, chemical peels, and drainage and extraction procedures.
We know how acne can impact you, regardless of age. Not only does it affect your skin, but it can also make you self-conscious. Our dermatologic experts work with you to minimize the effects of acne and offer solutions customized just for you. It stars Ready: Player One’s Tye Sheridan, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’s Fionn Whitehead, Lily-Rose Depp and Colin Farrell.
No Sudden Move – 9th October This Steven Soderbergh-directed crime thriller came out on HBO Max in the US to enthusiastic reviews, and is finally arriving in the UK. 2018 AFC West Team Analysis and Projections
Kansas City Chiefs
2018-19 Projected Finish: 1st
2017-18 Finish: 1st
 Key Additions
Offense
Sammy Watkins (WR)(free agent - Rams) – The Chiefs moved quickly to sign Watkins to a 3 year $48 million contract as soon as free agency opened. A surprising signing to some. Watkins is coming off of a season with the Rams in which statistical production was down, but he played a pivotal role in the offensive success of the team. Most importantly Watkins played 15 games last season. Watkins’ addition is just another weapon for an already loaded offense including Kelce, Hill, and Hunt.
Chad Henne (QB)(free agent - Jaguars) -  An underrated signing for the Chiefs was that of backup quarterback Chad Henne. Henne had been with Jacksonville since 2012, but with the trade of Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes now becoming the starter, the Chiefs needed a veteran signal caller to help not just the offense but also the development of Mahomes. Though you hope Henne is never forced into action, the Chiefs should feel comfortable if Henne was needed for a game or two.
Defense
Anthony Hitchens (LB)(free agent - Cowboys) –  Hitchens will be slotted next to Reggie Ragland in the Chiefs’ defense to give them a very promising duo in the middle of their defense this coming season. While capable in the passing game, Hitchens will shine in his ability to defend the run. His addition to a unit that struggled mightily in that category last season will be a big boost. Hitchens will help calm concerns about a unit entering 2018 with question marks along the defensive side of the ball.
 Key Losses
Offense
Alex Smith (QB)(traded to Redskins) – Alex Smith was fantastic last season and had it not been for defensive shortcomings the Chiefs likely would have advanced against the Titans. Anytime a QB has a career year and absolutely balls out its gonna be a loss, but the Chiefs felt so comfortable with Patrick Mahomes under center that they traded Smith to the Redskins. While it is a loss, it will be exciting to see Mahomes this season.
Defense
Marcus Peters (CB)(traded to Rams) – The trade of Marcus Peters is still baffling in my mind. The Chiefs had 2 seasons with the 5th year option and a possible 3rd with the franchise tag of control left on Peters. Even with that much control remaining, they still only fetched 4th round pick in 2018 and a 2nd in 2019. Beyond the poor trade compensation, Peters was unlikely to stay in KC. He seemed destined to return to California where he grew up so I can’t fault getting something in return for a player who could have left anyways. On the field, Peters will be hard to replace as he was a lockdown corner with massive potential to generate turnovers. The Chiefs defense should be improved but had Peters remained it could have been elite.
 Team Analysis
The Chiefs should be favored to win the division even though Alex Smith is gone and Mahomes is a relative unknown. With an experienced head coach, a solid offensive line, Eric Berry’s return on defense, draft additions Breeland Speaks, Dorian O’Daniel and Derrick Nnadi, and free agent additions Xavier Williams and Anthony Hitchens The Chiefs should see a significant improvement. They’re an overall deep team that should win the division in 2018.
  Los Angeles Chargers
2018-19 Projected Finish: 2nd
2017-18 Finish: 2nd
 Key Additions
Offense
Mike Pouncey (C)(free agent – Dolphins) – Pouncey was released from the Dolphins following the acquisition of Daniel Kilgore. For Pouncey, the key to success for the upcoming season is the health of his hips. If he can avoid problems with his hips, he should be an excellent addition to the Chargers’ line. If healthy, the offense should see a noticeable improvement.
Virgil Green (TE)(free agent – Broncos) -  Virgil Green’s role expanded as soon as news broke that Hunter Henry went down with a torn ACL. Green never had a premier role in the Broncos offense, never recording more than 22 receptions in a season. Barring the signing of Antonio Gates, Green should see career highs in touchdowns, receptions, and yards.
Defense
Derwin James (S)(draft, 1st round 17th pick) – Derwin James is Gus Bradley’s new Kam Chancellor in the Chargers defense. James is a freak athlete who after a spectacular freshman year at Florida State was struck by injuries. He did, however, get back to the player he was in the second half of last season. For the Chargers, James’ athletic ability and size allows for him to cover tight ends and still be an absolute force in the run game. James will be an enforcer for a Chargers defense which should be one of the leagues best.
 Key Losses
Offense
Hunter Henry (TE)(injury) – After the Chargers informed Antonio Gates that they would not be bringing him back this season it became the expectation that Henry would take the next step this upcoming season. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL and will miss the entire season for the Chargers offense. The production the team would have received from Henry will need to be replaced from somewhere and figuring out where it's going to come from is the question.
Defense
Jeremiah Attaochu (DE)(free agent signed with 49’ers) –  Attaochu’s loss is really the only one on the Chargers defense. And even with his departure, it's unlikely that it will impact the team in any significant way. With Bosa and Ingram rushing the passer, the Chargers are unlikely to struggle getting to the quarterback.
 Team Analysis
The Chargers look like a really solid team from top to bottom, but there are two problems. First, they haven't beat the Chiefs in the last three years and second they always start the season it seems slow. If the team starts fast and at least splits with the Chiefs, they could win the division.
  Denver Broncos
2018-19 Projected Finish: 3rd
2017-18 Finish: 4th
 Key Additions
Offense
Case Keenum (QB)(free agent - Vikings) – Case Keenum was signed by the Broncos on a 2 year deal leading some to expect the team would select a signal caller in the draft. That didn’t happen. Instead, the team selected a stud defender and made the commitment to Keenum at least for this season that this is his team. Keenum is coming off an excellent season in which he led the Vikings to the NFC championship game. Keenum is an upgrade to any signal caller the Broncos have had since Manning’s retirement. Expecting Keenum to perform to a similar level as last season isn’t a stretch. He’s a talented QB with a good supporting cast as well as an excellent defense behind him.
Jared Veldheer (OT)(trade- Cardinals) -   Veldheer was acquired for minimal draft compensation with the Cardinals. Veldheer had been on the left side for most of his time there, but last season the team moved him to the right side. After initial struggles during the first half of the season, Veldheer got better – that is before an injury ended his season. For the Broncos the hope is that Veldheer will lock down the right tackle position as it was a serious weak point for the team last season. Veldheer more than likely isn't a long-term answer at right tackle but he should be a quality stopgap.
Defense
Bradley Chubb (DE)(draft, 1st round, 5th pick) – Stud. That’s what Bradley Chubb is, and with him and Von Miller rushing, Chubb should get a lot of one on one opportunities allowing him a great shot at winning defensive rookie of the year. Long-term Chubb should be one of the better pass rushers in the league.
 Key Losses
Offense
C.J Anderson (RB)(cut by the team) – In my opinion, Anderson is a better running back than Devontae Booker, and the Broncos decision to cut Anderson in favor of Booker is puzzling. Though Royce Freeman, who was drafted in the third round by the team, has an opportunity to win the majority of snaps at running back and remove all memories of C.J Anderson.
Defense
Aqib Talib (CB)(trade to Rams) – Talib still has quality years left. He’s no longer the player we saw in the prime of his career, but he was still effective. It seems the trade of Talib was more about the amount of financial resources tied up in the defensive backfield rather than the quality of Talib’s play. With him gone the defense should still be one of the best units in the NFL especially with the talent along the defensive front seven.
 Team Analysis
With Keenum at Quarterback and Chubb and Miller on defense, the Broncos could be a sneaky pick to win the division. I just feel the roster lags behind that of the Chiefs and Chargers.
  Oakland Raiders
2018-19 Projected Finish: 4th
2017-18 Finish: 3rd
 Key Additions
Offense
Jordy Nelson (WR)(free agent - Packers) – Nelson played 15 games lasts season but without Aaron Rodgers struggled to connect with Brett Hundley. The Packers then cut Nelson, and the Raiders pounced, in turn, cutting Michael Crabtree. Nelson, prior to last season, recorded 3 straight seasons of more than 1,200 yards receiving. With the Raiders, and Derek Carr at quarterback, he should have a more productive season but its fair to wonder if he can reach the production of just two years ago now at age 33.
Kolton Miller (OT)(draft, 1st round 15th pick) -  Kolton Miller was a divisive prospect during the draft process. Some saw his measurables and athletic ability as reasons to be optimistic. Others saw his struggles with technique and inconsistent play as reasons to not take him. Miller seems likely to play right tackle this season before eventually taking over at left tackle for Donald Penn. I expect Miller to struggle in his rookie season. This year will be an adjustment to the NFL for Miller.
Defense
Tahi Whitehead (LB)(free agent - Lions) – Whitehead is coming off a really solid season for the Lions likely related to him shifting back to outside linebacker versus playing middle for the team. The Raiders got Whitehead on a one year deal. On a team that was in need of major defensive upgrades, Whitehead seems like a player who can play a significant role in a possible defensive turnaround for this Raiders defense.
 Key Losses
Offense
Michael Crabtree (WR)(cut by Team) – Crabtree is a 1,000 yard per season capable player. With Nelson, it seems like the production of Crabtree is matched. Seems like this decision was more of a personal preference by the Raider’s management for Nelson versus Crabtree.
Defense
T.J Carrie (CB)(free agent signed with Browns) – For a pass defense that struggled it seemed logical to keep Carrie. He was one of the teams best performers but departed to the Browns on 4 year, $3 million deal leaving an already questionable secondary even more so.
 Team Analysis
The Raiders are an unknown simply because of Jon Gruden leading the team. They were hyped last season as a Super Bowl contender but didn’t even come close. I expect Derek Carr to perform better as he never quite looked the same after returning from a back injury. Even with a healthier Carr, the team still has serious questions.
Stay tuned for more NFL analysis. In the meantime...

State Action
There was very little to find on the state level for abstinence only education (likely because California is a liberal state and this is a more conservative issue). I sent an email to Catharine Baker, shown below, and I await a reply for her stance on the issue.
The Honorable Catharine Baker,
The issue I am concerned about is abstinence only education.  I am concerned about this issue because of its current rise in popularity. I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class.  Please clarify your stance on this issue.  Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Isobel Whitehead

1a. Assembly Bill No. 643
b.  On February 2nd, 2017, the bill was first read.
c. The bill was chaptered by the Secretary of State on October 7th, 2017.
d. I agree with this bill. It expands the comprehensive sex education further, which I think is a positive thing. The bill makes sex education include information about abusive relationships and early warning signs of them. I would encourage my representatives to support this because I think a lot of people ignore early signs of abuse, and then get stuck in relationships, and this could help reduce the number of abusive relationships.

Broken, Stuck, and Astounding Luck: The Dodged Demise of John Lee and Joseph Samuel
John Henry George Lee led a life full of accusations. Born in Abbotskerswell, Devon, England in 1864 he was in and out of trouble early on and left school to work for an elderly woman named Emma Anne Whitehead Keyse at her beachside estate called “The Glen.” He left the home to join the Royal Navy but trouble followed him there and he quickly became known as a thief. When his bad habits caught up with him in 1883 he was taken to court, convicted of robbery, and sentenced to hard labor at Exeter. Upon his release he returned to The Glen. Keyse opened her door to him once again, not realizing what lay ahead.

On November 15th 1884 Keyse’s home in Babbacombe Bay transformed into a grisly murder scene when the old woman was found with her throat slit, multiple wounds to her head, and a number of burns that seemed to point to an unsuccessful attempt to burn the body. The only people living at The Glen at the time of the murder was the now deceased Keyse, servants Jane and Eliza Neck, the cook Elizabeth Harris, and John Lee. All eyes immediately turned to Lee, not only because he had a cut on his arm he could not explain, but also because he was the only man in the house at the time of the murder. Although totally circumstantial, this was enough “evidence” to arrest him. The accusations were thin, that Keyse was disappointed in his behavior and threatened to cut his wages so he murdered her in cold blood, something that the prosecution argued was in line with his previous life of theft in the Royal Navy. The verdict was harsh, he was quickly convicted of murder and sentenced to hang. He was oddly calm throughout the trial, stating to the judge “The reason I am so calm is that I trust in the Lord and he knows I am innocent."

Lee’s execution date was scheduled for February 23rd 1885 at Exeter and he never wavered in claiming his innocence. He approached the scaffolding where executioner James Berry and a priest waited for him. The final prayers were said, Lee took his final breaths, and Berry pulled the lever to drop the trap door beneath Lee’s feet ending his life. Except nothing happened. The trap door never opened. Berry had tested the door and lever before the execution and reported that everything was in working order but now, despite the lever being moved back and forth and the trap door being stomped on, it refused to open. Lee’s still very much alive body was carried away from the gallows and a carpenter was brought in to examine the door. Finding nothing wrong with it, he sanded down the edges of the opening to prevent anything from being in the way of the trap door dropping. A large weight was fastened to a rope to test the trap door and it worked perfectly, dropping the weight through with one pull of the lever. Lee was brought back, the prayers were once again recited, the lever pulled, and again nothing happened. The door and the convict both remained in place. Lee was again moved from the gallows and this time he was taken back to his cell for twenty minutes while the entire system was looked over, oiled, and tested by workmen. Unable to find anything wrong, Lee was brought out to the gallows to meet his end for a third time. Again the prayers were said, the prisoner positioned, the lever pulled…and nothing happened.
With no clear explanation to what was keeping Lee from what should have been certain death, he was again taken back to a cell. But, the execution would not resume. Within hours Home Secretary Sir William Harcourt commuted the sentence to penal servitude for life stating "It would shock the feeling of anyone if a man had twice to pay the pangs of imminent death."
Lee served twenty-two years of his sentence and was released in 1907. He quickly took advantage of his new reputation of “The Man They Could Not Hang”, supporting himself by giving lectures about his life and becoming the subject of silent films and songs.

Amazingly, John Henry George Lee is not the only man in history who can claim they were denied death by the gallows three times. In fact, he was not even the first to earn the bizarre title. That honor belongs to Joseph Samuel who defied death over fifty years earlier.
Joseph Samuel was born in England in 1780 and quickly found himself enveloped in a life of crime. At the age of fifteen Samuel was convicted of robbery and in 1801 he found himself among 297 other convicts making their way from England to the penal settlement at Sydney Cove in Australia. The prisons in Australia at the time were not heavily guarded due to their isolation. Situated far from any other form of civilization, if any prisoner was able to escape they would be faced with miles of harsh terrain and it was greatly assumed the wilderness would kill them. However, there are always exceptions to every rule, and Samuel was one of them. He successfully jumped the fence, ran out into the wilderness, and succeeded in coming out the other end of it alive.
Tumblr media

Samuel beat the odds with his escape, but the victory was short lived. On August 26th 1803 he and a gang of fellow thieves broke into the home of a wealthy woman named Mary Breeze and attempted to steal a desk with money hidden inside of it. Breeze was able to alert the police and an off duty officer Constable Joseph Luker went to investigate the scene, but instead of apprehending the culprits, he walked into an unfortunate end. Before sunrise his corpse was found in the back of Breeze’s home, brutally beaten to death. Laying near his body was the desk and a bloody wheel.
The murder of Constable Luker shocked the community and the military was called in to sweep the area in search of the murderers. Before long the house where Samuel and the rest of the gang of robbers was searched. In Samuel’s pockets were some of the stolen gold and silver coins and a barrow without its wheel was found inside the house. Everyone was arrested but due to a lack of evidence they were all eventually released, except for Samuel. A woman came forward and claimed she saw him near Breeze’s garden the night of the murder and after being interrogated Samuel finally admitted to the robbery but steadfastly insisted that he did not kill the officer. His confession combined with the coins and the broken barrow added up to enough to charge him with murder. He was brought into court and sentenced to hang in Brickfield Hill.
On September 26th 1803 twenty-three year old Joseph Samuel was led to the gallows to meet his end. Alongside him was another criminal, arrested and sentenced for an unrelated charge. A huge crowd had gathered to watch the execution and among them was Isaac Simmonds, one of the men arrested with Samuel and subsequently released. Reverend Samuel Marsden and Australia’s future first rabbi Joseph Marcus were on hand and when they asked the men for confession Samuel unleashed, stating that Simmonds had privately confessed to him that he was the murderer. Simmonds adamantly denied the charge but the crowd quickly turned on him, forcing the military to hold them back so the execution could proceed.

When one pictures a scene of a hanging it will typically involve a scaffold and a trap door that opens up forcing the prisoner to drop to their death. As Joseph Samuel stood condemned to die, that form of hanging was still many years from being invented. In 1803 the convict would have a noose placed around their necks and they would be stood in the back of a horse-drawn cart. When the time came the horse would be startled or slapped making it pull the cart away from under the convict’s feet leaving them hanging and facing a slow, agonizing death. Samuel stood now in the back of a cart, head bent in prayer during his last few moments, and the cart was pulled away. But instead of Samuel being left to hang, the thick hemp rope around his neck snapped. He fell into the dirt below and sprained his ankle. The executioner quickly gathered up the prisoner and prepared to repeat the whole process. The hemp noose used at the time should have been able to hold over 1,000 pounds before breaking but a new one was quickly placed over his neck, the cart was returned, and again pulled away from under his feet. This time, the rope unraveled, leaving Samuel to hit the ground on his feet. Exasperated and certain of the integrity of the nooses, the executioner called the cart back again and set Samuel up for death a third time amid the large crowd growing louder and louder with some yelling that this was a sign of innocence from God. The third time the cart pulled away Samuel’s rope again snapped sending him into the dirt with his heart still racing. The crowd roared for the Governor to grant a reprieve and the Provost Marshal rode off to get his word. Before long the Governor was on site inspecting the ropes. After finding no evidence of tampering and without any explanation as to how they could have all broken, he declared his official ruling, Joseph Samuel would be spared from the sentence of death due to divine intervention.
Although pardoned from death Samuel was not given back his freedom and he was sent to Kings Town to work in the mines and fulfil a sentence of hard labor. In the years after his seemingly miraculous pardon from death, Samuel again tried to press his luck. In 1806 he and seven other prisoners escaped the settlement in a boat. But, his luck had indeed run out and the vessel was never seen again. All the men on board were declared drowned.
While there are many stories through time of people surviving botched executions, John Henry George Lee and Joseph Samuel are the only two known members of a very specific club, men who were each hanged three times in one day and lived to tell their tales.

Fundraising for Kyle Rittenhouse Reveals American Christianity’s White Supremacy Problem | Religion Dispatches
Tumblr media
Christianity has long had a white supremacy problem. The Kenosha aftermath has just made it clear.
GiveSendGo, a “Christian crowdfunding” site has raised more than $360,000 for Kyle Rittenhouse, the white 17-year-old boy from Illinois who came to Kenosha with a semi-automatic rifle to oppose protesters demonstrating against systemic racism and the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, seven times in the back. Rittenhouse shot three people, killing Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, and has been charged with numerous crimes, including first degree murder. The founder of the Christian website hosting the campaign has defended raising funds for an accused murderer, saying “everything we do and what our platform delivers is Christ-centered.”
Fundraising in the name of Jesus is nothing new, but fundraising for an accused murderer and presumed racist has raised some eyebrows. What kind of Christians support people who murder others? is a popular question. Everywhere people are asking “why?” Why would Christians, who must be good, support someone accused of doing such a bad thing with such corrupt motives?
Inevitably in situations like this one people argue that these are “not real Christians” or that they’re “fake Christians,” nonsense that RD contributor Chrissy Stroop deftly disposed of. I want to look at why people are surprised and show that they shouldn’t be because American Christianity and white supremacy are inextricably intertwined.
The KKK is a Christian organization. The Klan burned crosses as a “symbol of sacrifice and service, and a sign of the Christian Religion sanctified and made holy nearly 19 centuries ago, by the suffering and blood of 50 million martyrs who died in the most holy faith.” In 2017, Ilia Calderón, a Black Hispanic journalist at Univision, interviewed a KKK leader who told her “We’re going to burn you out. . . . We killed six million Jews the last time. Eleven million is nothing.” Calderón asked, “Are you a hate group? How do you define yourselves?” The response was unequivocal: “We define ourselves as a Christian group.”
Slavers and segregationists justified their atrocities to themselves and the world by citing Christianity and the Bible. The same bigotry that once sought exemptions from civil rights laws to allow Christian business owners to refuse to serve Blacks is seeking identical exemptions to refuse to serve LGBTQ citizens.
Sometimes the white supremacy interwoven with Christianity is less obvious, even if it’s staring us in the face. Jesus, if such a man existed, was certainly not white. Yet in America, the most popular depictions of Jesus feature a blond-haired, blue-eyed, white-skinned fellow gazing into the distance. The KKK bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. on September 15, 1963, killing four little girls, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Carol Denise McNair. In one of the stained-glass windows that was not entirely destroyed an image of a faceless Jesus remained. When James Baldwin was asked what this faceless Jesus said about the tragedy he responded: “The absence of the face is something of an achievement, since we have been victimized so long by an alabaster Christ.”
Baldwin is not alone. Asked about the relationship between Christianity and white supremacy, Dr. Anthea Butler, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, said, “It’s a huge relationship. Every time you see a white Jesus you see white supremacy.”
The image of a white Jesus has an impact. A new series of studies shows that people are more likely to select candidates for hypothetical jobs when the candidate is the same race as their personal conception of god. In America, Christian children, “both White and racial minority, conceptualized God as more White than Black (and more male than female)” according to one of the studies. The authors write in their abstract, “data reveal a clear and consistent pattern: Attributing a social identity to God predicts perceiving individuals who share that identity as more fit for leadership.” In other words, thinking of god as white, as most Americans do, means you think white people are more fit to lead and better to hire. It’s an inherent bias written into the DNA of American Christianity.
The imagery is everywhere, even in footsteps of progress. The Mississippi legislature voted to remove an overt symbol of white supremacy, the Confederate flag, from the state flag, while at the same time requiring that the exclusionary Christian nationalist phrase “In God We Trust” be added. Data show that “In God We Trust” in this context is a racist dog whistle. To white Christian nationalists in Mississippi, the phrase means “us” not them— “They’re really kind of saying that this country belongs to a certain (group), and really what they’re saying is it belongs to white Protestant people,” said Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist who studies Christian Nationalism.
There are those who don’t hear these dog whistles, not because they’re inaudible, but because they’ve stuffed their fingers into their ears, unwilling to hear anything that might connect their religion with racism. But the link is backed by data.
That willful deafness stems from our basic failure to recognize that religion and goodness are two different things. For many, religion is believed to be inherently good and moral. The narrative is omnipresent in our politics and in the media. Therefore, anything bad or immoral, such as racism or sexism, is by definition incompatible with religion. This is why we get the claims of “Fake Christian” we hear so often and which Stroop exposed as fallacious.
Christians fundraising for an accused racist and murderer was a surprise only to those who conflate “Christian” with “good.” They were surprised that Christians could support racism and murder because of flawed assumptions. Baldwin followed up his incisive observation about the faceless stained-glass Jesus, with another, “it sums up the crisis we’re living through. If Christ has no face, then perhaps it is time that we, who invented and in one way or another are responsible for our deities, give him a new face…”
The face Americans have given Christianity is a mask. Until we learn that “Christian” is not synonymous with “good,” that religion is not a proxy for moral virtue, we will never defeat racism.

Many acne treatments are available in Gilbert, and differ from person to person.

UK retail sales fall at fastest rate ever – while ecommerce takes record share of spending
Tumblr media
UK retail sales fell at their fastest rate on record in March – when most stores closed their shutters to protect against the Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, ecommerce took its largest ever share of retail spending – at 22.3% of all sales.
Non-essential stores were ordered to shut by the government on March 23 – and today’s official figures covering the whole of the month show overall retail sales for the month fell by 5.1%. That’s the largest fall since the monthly Office for National Statistics (ONS) Retail Sales Monitor began.
Non-food sales were hit hard, falling by 20% in value compared to the previous month, with clothing particularly badly affected. Food sales grew by 10.3% in value compared to the previous month, with online food sales up by almost 20%.
Overall, online sales grew strongly. They were up by 12.5% compared to a year earlier, and by 8.3% compared to the previous month, and reached a record high of 22.3% of all retailing during the month, as shoppers moved more of their purchases online.
Since most shops were open as normal until March 23, today’s figures only show the beginning of an effect that is likely to be massively more pronounced when figures for April are released next month. Today’s figures cover the period from March 1 to April 4, meaning that two weeks of the five-week trading period were affected by the social distancing measures and closure of non-essential shops.
  Retail sales figures across channels
The ONS figures suggest that shoppers spent 6% less compared to last March to buy 5.8% fewer goods. They spent 5.7% less than in February and bought 5.1% fewer goods. A large part of that is down to lower spending on petrol and diesel. When automotive fuel is excluded, shoppers spent 3.9% less to buy 4.1% fewer goods year-on-year (YOY) and 3.8% less to buy 3.7% fewer goods month-on-month (MOM). In the three months to March 2020, sales fell by 1.4% in value and by 1.6% in volume compared to the previous three months.
  How shoppers spent across categories
  Department stores
Department stores enjoyed the strongest online growth, with ecommerce sales up by 33.7% compared to a year earlier, and by 47.4% compared to the previous month. In March 2019, online sales had grown by 0.1%. This year, online growth helped to compensate for store closures, and overall sales in the sector were up by 2.2% on last year, and 2.8% on last month. The sector was a rare beneficiary in the non-food sector, perhaps because a greater proportion of business in this category has already moved online. However, clothing sales were as hard hit in department stores as elsewhere, with sales down by 34.3% month on month.Department store online spending was directed towards categories including food, household goods and other non-food categories that also increased elsewhere.
  Food
Online food sales grew by 19.7% in March, compared to the previous year, and by 17.9% on the previous month, as a record 5.7% of food sales took place online. Sales across all channels grew by 10.3% compared to the previous month. Within that, supermarket sales grew by 10.2% in value, specialist food shop sales were up by 5%, and alcohol sales grew 32.6% in value. Online-only, or pureplay, food retailers saw their sales double (+101%). In March 2019, food sales by pureplay retailers had grown by 2.6%. Comments from food retailers suggested that stockpiling was a big factor in increased sales, particularly at supermarkets. But store closures affected smaller retailers, although some did offer delivery-only sales.
  Clothing, textiles and footwear
Online clothing sales were down by 4.4% on the previous year, and 16.1% on the previous month, while sales across all channels fell by 28.4% compared to the previous year and by 35.5% compared to the previous month. Online-only clothing retailers saw their sales decline by 0.8%. “Consumers appeared to be focusing on essential purchases to stockpile, with clothing suffering as a result,” said the ONS report.
  Household goods
Online sales of household goods grew by 51.8% on last year, and by 36.9% on last month. Overall sales fell by 8.9% in value, compared to the previous month.
  Other non-food stores
In this category online sales grew by 6.4% on last year, and by 2.4% on last month. But store closures hit hard in this category, and overall sales across all channels fell by 26.5% compared to the previous month.
    What the commentators think
Paul Martin, UK head of retail at business advisor KPMG, said: “It’s important to remember that March retail sales figures only capture a small proportion of the lock down – coming in place on March 23rd - but what is clear is that sales of non-essentials had evaporated well before the restrictions came into place, as anxiety about the virus started to build.
“Grocers and online retailers may appear beneficiaries with our high streets currently void of all footfall, but the surges here aren’t likely to be enough to make up for the lost ground across the sector more broadly. Added to that, a surge in sales hasn’t necessarily meant a rise in profits, with added costs associated with meeting demand in this climate. If considering the non-essential sales missed due to lock-down, it’s likely these will be lost forever and in many cases retailers will be frantically writing off stock. Only those deemed ‘essential’ currently, or those with robust online operations, are able to adapt to this current climate. Those that can’t, are naturally fixated on when the restrictions will lift.
“If confidence deteriorates further, it’s likely retail spend will be far from anyone’s mind when things do return to the ‘new normal’. There is little question that the retail landscape has changed permanently, but the key question will be: which retailers will still be fit for purpose in the next chapter?”
Ed Whitehead, managing director EMEA at ecommerce fraud prevention specialist Signifyd, said: “Technology is playing a key role in giving retailers a fighting chance of survival when faced with temporary store closures, supply chain bottlenecks and workforce disruptions. At a fundamental level ecommerce technology is allowing retailers to maintain or pivot operations, as we have seen with a few high street retailers including Next and Arcadia who have effectively become pure play online retailers whilst their stores remain closed and online becomes their sole sales channel. The current situation has also accelerated the adoption of certain technologies that reduce the need for human interaction, whether that is automated warehousing and stock picking, click and collect, including a surge in the use of drop boxes where stores are closed or the postal services have been disrupted.”
Ryan Broomfield, partner and retail specialist at RSM said the figures reflected the start of a significant downturn in UK consumer spend.
He said: “Online sales reached a record high of 22.3% of sales in the sector in March 2020 with people staying at home even before lockdown. We should expect a further lift in April sales as consumers settle into the ‘new-normal’, but with some online-only retailers ceasing operations during lockdown, it’s clear that very few businesses will emerge unscathed. Any business with loose ends weighing on performance will get found out. The soundness of underlying business structures will be critical to survival.”
