Vocal cats are the best what do you mean kitty can say hello like a human child? She says prrp to let you know where she is because she can't say psst, and the closest thing to psst in cat language is in fact a grievous insult. She goes "hmm?" when you call her. She almost says let's go when she calls you for food. If she could say t or g she would say let's go perfectly. She says I love you. I mean it's closer to maiyowoo but it's close enough for an animal that doesn't have human or bird vocal cords.

Good to know I'm not the only person with a black cat called kitty. Her name was supposed to be mulberry (moerbei in Afrikaans shortened to bytjie or little bee) because my brother found her while on his way back from picking mulberries. My mom, who was not at all a cat person up until that point, kept calling her kitty, at first with mild disdain and then increasingly fondly and she ended up only responding to kitty. Much to the chagrin of my brother, who still refuses to call her anything other than mulberry, even though she doesn't respond to it.

When I took her to get spayed her intake form officially read "kitty" in the name field, and thus she was officially and forevermore kitty. And all variants of that of course we have kietste Kat, kieter, kitsie, kietermekat, Kat, and because I say it to the sheep and dogs when I want them to get out of the way and accidentally started saying it to her when she trips me up booboops. Which she started responding to as a name so now she's sometimes my booboops, but only if she's being particularly cute.

KITTENBEE I'M DYING

My brother named our new baby the Afrikaans equivalent of mulberry because he found it under our mulberry tree. My parents (much to my brother's annoyance) nicknamed it the equivalent of tiny bee. (for reference, mulberry is moerbei in afrikaans, pronounced moo-rr-bay and the afrikaans equivalent for bee is by, pronounced bay, and tiny bee in afrikaans is bytjie which is both prounouced bay-key, and a bit of wordplay on byt (bite) because it's still so young it drinks from the bottle and before I informed my parents why, he kept biting and sucking on their fingers).

my cat is incredibly sweet and wants nothing more than to be within a 5 ft radius of a person at all times, gently chilling in your orbit. he is also VERY, VERY DUMB 

it’s a slow morning so husband and I are reading, not making much noise. meanwhile, Barold goes downstairs to use his box and when he comes out, he starts yowling like his lil heart done broke. husband goes to to the top of the stairs all worried like, “Barold, what’s wrong?”

kitty zips back up the stairs and just oozes onto husband’s feet, purring high-powered lawnmower style. the realization hit us both at the same time…

this. boy. this itty bitty kitty boy. 

he couldn’t see or hear us for ten continuous seconds, forgot. we. were. home. and immediately burst into tears !!!!
