Hi Cas
First off, please don't feel any pressure to answer this. I'm not heavily relying on this and would seriously prefer it if you put yourself and your mental health above mine
Second off, how are you?
Third off, I need advice :(
Little backstory so you understand, I'm a queer indian that shifted to London 12 months ago for my year 8-9, and when I first joined the school I was best friends with four people including the girl im talking about lets call her Saoirse cause she's Irish. 6-7 months later we've all drifted apart except Saoirse and her best friend. During class we talked occasionally and bantered as friends, until one day she insulted and laughed at me with a couple of friends about my Indian three letter name and when I called her out for it by mentioning her own name, she got into a strop and ignored me for 3 months, as well as trying to one up me with my supposed best friend who I ahwv a shaking relationship with. Admittedly, I did grovel a bit until she started talking to me randomly one morning. A month and we're good friends and then she gets caught doing something and when she gets a detention blames it on me. The next day the teacher asks me and I deny it, it becomes a whole thing for three weeks in which I promise myself to not let her into my life. But one day Saoirse just starts speaking to me again and since we're in the same friend group and it just felt so good I let her. For a week she dotes on me, pulling me to sit with her, and just something about the way she acts and speaks makes me wanna compliment her every time I speak to her. The second week, she unnecessarily touches me whenever she can, compliments me, and when a friend asked her if she was straight (a question she continuously replied yes to and she had a bf) she looked at me, smiled, and said her minds been changing lately. Throughout the week she flirts with me and calls me 'pookie', which whatever everyone does but before we had more of a love language: rude relationship. Finally on the last day, she pulls me aside and applies her lip balm on my lips slowly and constantly, leaning into close and then abruptly leaving. On Monday, peek a boo, shes a bitch. She continuously love bombs me, and whenever another girl who liked me looked at me she would put on an act and make me confront that girl because she called Saoirse a dick for everything. On Wednesday she just acts like she subtly hates me, but I can't speak to anyone cause all my friends are her friends. And also, shes so so so addicting so I can't use my remaining self respect and move away
What do I do?
(sorry for the long ask)
Hi hon! I'm good!
Well, it sounds like you already know what to do, it's just a matter of doing it:
You know Saoirse isn't treating you well. You know you deserve better. And you know she's the type of person hat keeps drawing you back in.
And trust me, I know those people. They're - like you said - addicting. But addiction never ends well, does it? So I think you know that the best idea is to take space from her.
I know it's a lot easier said than done, I know. But you deserve to be treated with respect. And it's okay to take space from people who aren't giving you what you deserve.
Think about it. Message me again with updates or if you need encouragement!
Naming you self respect anon <3

Planning Your Dream Trip to Leh Ladakh: A Comprehensive Guide
Leh Ladakh, a name that stirs the soul of every adventure enthusiast, is a destination that most travelers dream of exploring at least once in their lifetime. Nestled in the northernmost part of India, Ladakh is a land of mesmerizing beauty, challenging terrains, and a culture that is as rich as it is unique. However, plan a trip to Leh Ladakh this remote paradise requires careful preparation. From choosing the right time to visit to understanding what to carry, this guide will answer all your burning questions and help you embark on the journey of a lifetime.
The Best Time to Visit Ladakh
Timing is crucial when planning a trip to Ladakh. The region experiences extreme weather conditions, which significantly impact accessibility and the overall experience with guide to leh ladakh bike trip. While Ladakh transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland from November to March, the heavy snowfall during this period makes road travel nearly impossible. Temperatures can plunge to -14°C, and major connecting roads are often closed. However, winter offers a unique opportunity for the adventurous to undertake the Chadar Trek, where you walk on a frozen river.
Is Ladakh Safe for Travel?
Safety is a common concern for travelers considering a trip to Ladakh, especially given its proximity to international borders and the presence of the Indian military. Despite these factors, Ladakh is one of the safest travel destinations in India. The Indian Army is highly supportive of tourists, ensuring safety throughout the region. The areas of military activity are far from the tourist trails, so unless you're planning to venture near the borders, there's no reason to worry. Ladakh’s economy thrives on tourism, and locals are warm and welcoming, making it a secure and enjoyable destination for all.
Must-Visit Places in Ladakh
Ladakh is a treasure trove of natural and cultural wonders. While the Pangong Tso Lake gained fame through the movie "3 Idiots," there are countless other sites that deserve a spot on your itinerary.
Gata Loops: Known for its 21 hairpin bends, the Gata Loops is both a thrilling and scenic drive. The area is steeped in local lore, with tales of a ghostly presence that only permits safe passage if offerings are made.
Magnetic Hill: One of the most intriguing stops in Ladakh, this hill defies gravity, with vehicles appearing to roll uphill on a downhill slope.
Shanti Stupa: This white-domed stupa offers not only spiritual solace but also panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, especially breathtaking during a full moon.
Hall of Fame: A tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-Pak wars, this museum is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s safety.
Leh Market: A bustling hub for shopping, the Leh Market is perfect for picking up souvenirs like Tibetan artifacts and woolen clothing.
Nubra Valley: Nestled along the Shyok River, this valley offers a deep dive into Ladakhi culture. The Diskit Monastery here is a must-visit, as is the opportunity to acclimate to the region’s high altitude.
Tso Moriri Lake: The highest lake in India, Tso Moriri, is a serene and stunning body of water, though accommodations here are limited, requiring advanced planning.
Khardung La Pass: This is one of the highest motorable roads in the world, offering an exhilarating ride and spectacular views.
Essential Items to Carry
Ladakh’s remoteness is part of its charm, but it also means you need to be well-prepared. Here’s what you should pack:
ID Card and Documents: A government ID is essential, along with multiple passport photos for permits.
Cash: ATMs are scarce and unreliable, so carry enough cash for the entire trip.
SIM Card: Only BSNL/MTNL postpaid connections work here, so plan accordingly.
UV Protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm are crucial to protect against the harsh sun.
Warm Clothes and Footwear: Even in summer, temperatures can drop significantly, so pack warm layers and sturdy hiking shoes.
Medication: High altitudes can cause Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Bring medicines like Diamox, and first-aid essentials.
Understanding Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
AMS is a common concern when traveling to high altitudes like Ladakh, where reduced air pressure and oxygen levels can cause dizziness, shortness of breath, and other symptoms. To prevent AMS:
Climb Slowly: Allow your body time to acclimate by ascending gradually.
Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol and certain medications can worsen AMS.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust.
Carry Medication: Diamox and Acetazolamide can help mitigate symptoms.
Suitable Age for Traveling to Ladakh
Ladakh’s challenging environment is not suitable for everyone. While there’s no strict age limit, it’s generally recommended for travelers aged 18 to 45. Those with medical conditions should consult a doctor before planning their trip, and it’s advised against bringing young children due to the risk of AMS.
Workation in Ladakh: A New Trend
With remote work becoming the norm, the idea of a workation in Ladakh is increasingly popular. The serene environment, combined with the thrill of high-altitude living, makes for a unique working experience. However, ensure you choose accommodations with reliable internet and are prepared for the challenges of limited connectivity.
Do’s and Don’ts in Ladakh
Respecting the local culture and environment is crucial when traveling to Ladakh. Here are some key points:
Do’s: Consult a doctor before your trip, stay at hotels with oxygen supplies, and take a rest day upon arrival to acclimate.
Don’ts: Avoid using drones, relying solely on Google Maps, and using plastic bags, which are banned in the region.
Renting a Bike in Ladakh
A bike trip is one of the best ways to explore Ladakh. You can rent bikes in Srinagar, Manali, and Leh. Make sure you have a valid driving license and be prepared to pay a security deposit. Remember, bikes rented from Manali can only be used until Leh; for further travel within Ladakh, you’ll need to rent a bike locally.
Conclusion
Leh Ladakh is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that leaves an indelible mark on your soul. With the right planning, you can overcome the challenges of this high-altitude region and fully immerse yourself in its unparalleled beauty. Whether you’re drawn by the adventure, the culture, or the serene landscapes, Ladakh promises a journey you’ll never forget. So gather your friends or set out solo, and let the Land of High Passes captivate your heart.

Tell us about what skincare ingredients and products you love!
Okay, so I LOVE TALKING SKINCARE. This is a huge topic for me and I often write up a blog post once a year where i recommend skin care products. So here is this year’s recommendation! An insanelyyyyy long and detailed post nobody asked for!! HERE WE GO:
I am a long time skincare advocate...before it really blew up and people started really getting to know more about their products and ingredients. I’ve just always had very acne-prone skin so I’ve had to pay attention to what products and ingredients I was using and how their formulas worked for me. As a result, over the years I tried A SHIT TON of products. Many expensive, fancy, high end, etc. But now I have my skincare routine down to a much more manageable and quality ingredient list. Obviously everyone’s skin is different...but this is what I use on a regular basis these days:
Serums:
- Krave Beauty’s Great Barrier Relief Serum: Honestly, this is THE SHIT. My favorite moisturizing serum to really help balance your skins hydration barrier and stay hydrated. It’s thicker and almost feels like a moisturizer. It’s so great. - The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Drops: Niacinamide is an amazing ingredient for your skin and can help a tremendous amount with clearing the skin, resurfacing, fading scars, and more. This really does a good job helping with my acne, so i really recommend to anyone. And I am pretty sure it’s like $5 cause it’s from the ordinary.
Moisturizers:
- CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: It’s a very cheap drug store moisturizer that has good, clean ingredients. After using fancy moisturizers for years, I finally gave into my dermatologist’s recommended lotion. LOL. They do have a lotion that is lighter, but my skin tends to be dryer, especially in the winter so I use the cream not the lotion. It’s thicker. (For high end junkies--it’s like comparing Drunk Elephant’s LaLa Retro to their Protini cream). I also sometimes throw in drops of a marula oil into this cream if I am really dry. Make myself a little face smoothie.
Eye/Lip Creams:
- Mario Badescu Ceramide Herbal Eye Cream: Now honestly, I still haven’t found my perfect eye cream yet...but I have used this one for a few years now. It moisturizes well and is cheap to buy. It’s probs not the most effective but at least I am moisturizing my eye area. One day I will take on more eye creams that target certain things, but that is one day when I have money to spend lmao. -Glossier Bubblewrap Lip/Eye Cream: This is a very unique moisturizing product that is meant for sensitive skin like your eye area and lips. It does say it plumps a bit, which I don’t ever feel a plumping effect, but I do love to use it on my lips. It’s so moisturizing and is kind of like using a primer before you apply chapstick or lipstick.
Exfoliators:
- Glossier Solution: The OG chemical exfoliant I tried and loved. These types of products aren’t great for everyone, and may have to be used less or more depending on skin type, but as an acne-prone human, I love a chemical exfoliant. This works and lasts a long while.
- Krave Beauty’s Kale-Lalu_AHA: Another chemical exfoliant. I recently tried this one because I do believe Krave Beauty uses better ingredients than Glossier Skin typically does (no shade tho). They were close in price, so I made the switch and have enjoyed the results so far. The packaging is also beautiful.
- Dr. Brant Microdermabrasion Exfoliant: This is NOT a chemical peel, this has aluminum oxyde crystals in it to polish the skin like a normal exfoliant would. It also has a lot of ingredients that help renew and refresh the skin while exfoliating. Now this product is HELLA expensive...I only have it because I once bought it for way cheaper when I had a subscription box. I don’t know if I would spend the full $80 bucks on it, but your skin does feel smooth.
- Tatcha The Deep Polish: This is an enzyme powder that you mix with water and exfoliate fro there. It is from when I used to buy the highest end products in hopes it would help my skin. It is pricey, but again does leave your skin feeling soft. So I rotate it in from time to time.
Masks:
- The Ordinary’s AHA 30% BHA 2% Peeling Solution: AKA THE BLOOD MASK. Now hugely popular on social media, the “blood mask” is a chemical mask that peels off dead skin and essentially works to eliminate the top layers of your skin and begin rejuvenating a fresher layer for softer, healthier, plumper skin. I do this once a week and it is way cheap. I can compare it to Drunk Elephant’s Sukari Babyfacial and it definitely beats that expensive version.
- Glow Recipe’s Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask: This is an overnight moisturizing mask that you simply wash off in the morning. It really helps lock in moisture and feels nice on the skin. I use this when I am feeling really dry.
- Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask: This one you have to mix the dry clay mixture with water and apple cider vinegar to create a goo that you can then let dry on your face. It may be intense for some, but I find it really helps dry out my acne spots and reduce redness in my skin. It’s always a fun one to do with other people too because you do have to prepare it. Good sleepover activity.
- GlamGlow Bubble Sheet Mask: This one is honestly more so used for when I am traveling and want to keep a mask on hand or when I am having a fun girls night or something. It’s a bubble mask--so to me that just means fun. I typically avoid sheet masks (unless I am traveling) because I think you end up throwing a way a lot of product you are paying for. But this one is fun, it’s cute, it’s different. I don’t notice a huge change in my skin tbh, but it is a fun activity for girls night.
Honorable Mention/Random Products:
- Youth to the People’s Kale and Green Tea Superfood Cleanser: I stayed away from this one for a long time because it’s expensive and I could rationalize buying such an expensive cleanser, but I got a gift card to Sephora and finally decided to try it. And ya know what?? I guess I am fancy now because I really love it. It does not overly strip your skin at all, and for the first time in my life I really know what that means. It’s so great, it smells so good. Ugh. Can’t get enough of this bougie bitch of a face wash.
- The Inkey List Retinol Cream: A recent purchase, but I have enjoyed seeing the results. Everyone imo should be using an eye cream and a retinol. This is a nice introduction to retinol, so I recommend to those looking for one.
- Glossier Mint Balm Dot Com Chapstick: THIS AGAIN--IS THE SHIT. Many will say they would never spend more than two bucks but one tube of their’s is seven bucks and it is WORTH IT. I buy the three pack once a year and i’m good. This is the best chapstick you will literally ever use. Fucking buy it. If I could tell you only three products that are a must from this list this would be one of them. (the other two would be great barrier relief and the kale cleanser)
- Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: I like this lip mask, it’s not needed everynight, but I do like to use a lip exfoliant (made or buy one, whatever) and then use this to really retextures my lips.
- Bag Balm: Now this is a very unusual product to recommend lmaooo. Originally, bag balm is used for chapped cow udders on farms--which is how I discovered it. Farmers eventually noticed that it helped your skin retain moisture and repair cracked skin in their hands. So now it is known as a good thick ass cream for hands and feet. Now this shit is again--used on cows originally, so the formula feels thick and greasy. I like putting it on at night and letting it soak in for a while as I lay on my phone. It really works--I swear to you.
- Sagely CBD Cream: I use their relief and recovery crea which smells like lavender and has a cooling effect when applied to the skin (kinda like biofreeze or icyhot would). This is only a 50mg CBD lotion, but I do like it.
- Mad Ritual CBD Muscle Recovery Balm: Now this is thick and definitely a balm, not a cream. It is much higher strength though, so I break it out when needed and a little goes a long way. This one is 200mg of CBD.
- Mario Badescu Drying Lotion: This drying lotion is now so popular but has been a staple of mine for at least a decade now. You leave it on over night and it really does dry up and reduce zit size. Helps a lot. There must be a reason why super models are told to use this shit before a runway show.
- Tatcha The Essence: Essences are a new and kind of weird thing, kinda like priming the skin to allow for better absorption of a product. Now this product I received as a Christmas gift one year, but I am pretty sure it’s like $100...breaking the bank as always, tatcha. Anyway, it does allow for better absorption of products and feels light and refreshing on the skin. One bottle has lasted me two years now. I don’t know if I would recommend it, but I do use it somewhat regularly and it does make you feel like a bougie bitch.

Protect (Male Naga ; Fic Raffle)
And the fic is completed! As per the request of @teacupfullofstars, this story features a plus-sized reader and a male naga. I had loads of fun writing this (the proof being the 9 and 1/4 pages saved to my Word processor)! So I hope you guys enjoy this one as well! Female Reader (POV) x Male Monster If there was one job perk you adored, it was traveling.
Since your employment, your career took you across vast oceans and past numerous borders. And with every site you visited, you experienced various cultures, met interesting people, and saw amazing creatures—mythical and common—up close. All while diligently ensuring the wildlife you worked with would no longer be at risk.
Not too shabby for an endangered species biologist, all things considered.
But this go around? Probably your most difficult assignment as of yet. Not because of the dwindling number of sun eagles you’re attempting to save. Or the stifling, scorching humidity coming in from the Bay of Bengal.
No, it’s all due to one of the wildlife sanctuary’s guards: Karan.
Which is why you’re preoccupied with hoping he isn’t assigned to the main expedition today.
“Really?” your tentmate drawls. “You know you can’t keep doing this, right?”
You sniff and finish applying anti-chafing balm to your plump thighs, all while Maura gathers the silk spilling from her gland for the expedition.
“Considering how this awkwardness isn’t my fault, I can and will keep avoiding him.”
Maura sighs, stopping the flow of silk once she’s braided it into a long thick rope. She tucks a white strand of hair behind a pointed, deep gray ear.
“Considering how he and the other guards are sharing a campground with us and he’s their leader, good luck with that.”
Part of you knows she’s right, which is why you bite your bottom lip…then quickly apply a layer of lip salve. Best to not get chapped lips during your stay in the jungle. You pull up your pair of breathable pants and tuck your socked feet into your hiking boots.
“We’re close to finding the source behind the sun eagles’ dwindling numbers. So I can, seeing as we’ll be done here in a few days.”
“Sure thing,” Maura says, heading over to the tent flap with her arms full of thick silk. “As long as you’re not asked to help boost the population with a breeding program.”
Maura’s comment makes you pause in the middle of pulling on your neutral-colored, long-sleeved shirt. You know there’s a good chance you and your colleagues will be asked to help multiply the sun eagle population. And even though you’ll be paid handsomely by the government, is it really worth the naga-shaped headache?
“Missy?” It takes a moment to identify the deep, male voice outside your tent. “You and Maura ready to go?”
The tension winding up in your body rushes out like a flood. It’s only Bashnog, one of the guards.
“Give us a few minutes and we will be!”
Someone else “tsks”. The sound has just a bit of susurrus to it.
“We cannot afford to waste any more time,” Karan says, matter-of-fact. “Please meet us by the campground’s southern edge.”
“Speak of the devil,” you mutter.
“Pardon?”
“Nothing!” You scoop up the bottle of sunscreen at your feet. “We’ll be out soon!”
With a final huff of air, Karan slithers away, rustling the leaves and sticks on the ground outside.
Maura glances your way, smirking as she opens the tent’s entrance.
“What was that about avoiding him again?”
You groan. Loudly.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The humid, summer air engulfs you as you tighten the straps on your daypack. With the way sweat gathers in your sports bra, you already know that personal, manual laundering will be a must tonight. Not only for you, but for your human peers and non-human colleagues that don’t handle heat so well.
Bashnog spots you from the campground’s edge and waves a deep green hand in greeting. He smiles, one of his chipped tucks gleaming in the dimmed sunlight.
“Sleep well, Missy?”
“As well as I could, Bash.”
Ever since you met the muscular, jovial orc three weeks ago, Bashnog took to calling you “Missy”. You didn’t mind as long as you could give him a nickname. Hence, Bash.
“You’ll be back inside a properly air-conditioned hotel when this is all over,” he says, chuckling.
“It’s not the summer heat that’s really bothering me...”
You covertly lean to the left, looking past him.
Karan stands near the front of the group, surrounded by the other sanctuary guards. He doles on instructions, his rich brown face as impassive as ever. You can’t recall ever seeing him smile during the time you’ve known him. Which, honestly, is a shame.
With his tidy, yet short jet-black hair, high-bridged nose, and muscular body, you know he’s caught an eye or two. Especially since any guy in a sharp uniform tends to draw appreciation. And the yellow and brown scale pattern of an Indian rock python on his serpentine half compliments his skin tone.
Hell, you’d be lying if you said he wasn’t attractive. But that spark was snuffed out the moment he stiffened then slithered away after first seeing you. Honestly...
“Missy?”
You turn your attention back to Bash.
“You’re Karan’s closest friend. Are you sure I didn’t do anything to offend him?”
Learning the cultural norms and expectations of both humans and non-humans came with the job description. And yet, no matter how hard you wracked your brain and sifted through your memories, you couldn’t think of how you could’ve upset him.
“Swear on my stronghold, Missy,” he says grinning. “You haven’t. Come on, we should join the others.”
Well, that was totally unhelpful. You settle on taking Bash’s words to heart, doing your best to ignore the shred the doubt growing in your mind.
He takes his place besides Karan while you head over towards Maura, who’s a few feet away, her arm threaded through her long coil of rope. As you walk past one of your male colleagues, Jamison, he lets out an insufferable groan that catches your ear.
“…bad enough we have to deal with the black widow drider,” he mutters, “but we have to deal with having her in the front? She’ll only slow us down.”
‘The black widow drider’ being Maura and ‘her’ being you. You stop where you stand and whirl to face him, ready to unleash a few choice words. But someone else beats you to it.
“I didn’t know demeaning your co-workers was a particular talent of your, Jamison. Perhaps I should let your employer know.”
Jamison jolts backwards only to land on his ass. Karan stares down at him through pinpoint slits surrounded by a warm gold. He crosses his arms, unknowingly showcasing the dark patches of scales dotting his skin.
“T-that…” Jamison swallows loudly. “That isn’t—”
“Enough. Discrimination of any sort has no place on this reserve. Fall in line where you’re meant to go. And stay silent.”
Karan hisses out the last of his command, showing a hint of fang. Jamison clambers to his feet and darts away, kicking up leaves and dirt a hurried rush. That leaves you standing before Karan, your mouth awkwardly parted. You close it with a soft click and clear your throat.
“Uh, thank you,” you say. Because that’s only thing your stunned mind can manage right now.
Karan nods then says your name. You wonder if you’ve both made some sort of breakthrough…
“You’ll be positioned up front behind me and in front of Maura during the expedition.”
…and wished you hadn’t.
“B-but,” you begin, almost floundering, “Bash is your second-in-command! Isn’t that his usual spot?”
“It is. But one of my men, Arnolds, hasn’t been seen since the start of this week. We’ll have to make due with what guards we have.”
Your mind recalls the tall, American expatriate with the charming crew-cut and even more charming personality. Unlike present company.
“If you think that’s best,” you say, sighing.
Karan nods, a resolute light in his eyes. There’s no point in disagreeing now, so you dip your head in reply.
He calls out to Maura and calmly gestures for you to follow along. You do, taking part of the rope Maura offers you after she gives a portion of it to Karan. As she doles out the rest to the others while they fall in line, Karan ties his part around his waist then faces the group.
“Everyone! We’re close to determining the cause behind the sun eagles’ endangerment. I believe this will be the first of many forays into their nesting grounds.”
His eyes scan the group with purpose then meet your gaze.
“As their territory veers off the public path, Bashnog and I have determined the best way to link the group together is through the use of rope made of drider silk. Please quickly tie your portion around your waist so we can move out.”
No need to tell you twice. Once you’ve tied a secure, tight knot about your thick waist, you adjust your daypack and wait. After one of the guards taking up the rear gives the word, Karan instructs the group to follow.
The trek down the public pathway is familiar as you’ve taken it quite a few times. But this is the first time you and your colleagues will head into the jungle. After about a fifteen-minute hike, Karan slowly comes to a halt before a gap in the dense tangle of tall trees. He holds up a clenched fist, a signal towards his men.
“From this point on,” he yells above the teeming noise, “you biologists will be in uncharted territory. Working together with us will guarantee our quick arrival at the nesting site and future success. Remember this.”
After a small pause, he pushes onward and you follow before the silk rope pulls taut. You have to take larger than usual steps to avoid tripping over the thick underbrush. But this isn’t your first go around with having to hike across cluttered terrain, albeit in a different climate.
Talk about foresight; no wonder Karan enlisted Maura’s help yesterday. You turn back and look at her, hoping to start a conversation to pass the time. But she shakes her head, then juts her chin forward. Towards Karan.
“Seriously?!” you hiss at her.
Karan clears his throat. You bottle up the sharp annoyance bubbling up inside you.
“Is there a problem?”
And feel it dissipate. Instead of his usual no-nonsense tone, his voice is calm. Almost gentle, even. Strange…
“No,” you say, licking away the beads of sweat gathering on your upper lip. But that’s a lie and you know it. “Actually, there is.”
Karan turns his head slightly in your direction to indicate he’s listening. You flex your damp hands a few times and take a soothing breath.
“I know you don’t like me,” you say with a bit more edge than planned; screw it. “But it’s hard to apologize for an offense when I don’t even know what I did.”
You brace yourself when Karan looks at you over his shoulder. Instead of the anger you expected, his features are twisted with confusion.
“I never said anything about disliking you.” He glances away with a frown then sighs. “If anything, I—!”
His clawed hand closes around your wrist in a vice.
“Get down!”
You fall onto your front, pulled down by his sudden movement. The rope tied around your waist goes taut then slack. Everyone else must be following Karan’s lead.
Shots ring out. Your pulse hammers inside of your skull and your teeth sink into your bottom lip. Quick footfalls burst out from the thick foliage around you, overtaking the sounds of wildlife. Then a series of sharp clicks; your blood runs cold.
“Never thought I’d see the day when the great Karan was down on his face,” a familiar voice says. “Will wonders never cease.”
Karan shifts his head up. He lets out a low, angry hiss.
“Arnolds?!”
Your eyes flit up in spite of your fear. Stomach dropping, you realize it is him. He adjusts the strap of the massive, loaded gun he holds in his hands with a smirk. “The one and only, boss.”
Then, as if to twist the knife further, he snaps his fingers. One of the unfamiliar men steps towards him and holds up a bloody sack. He reaches inside and partially pulls out a mangled, black wing. You swallow the bile and anger building in your throat.
This is the cause of the sun eagles’ endangerment. Karan’s sharp claws gouge deep rows into the ground.
“Why throw in your lot with poachers?”
“Money, obviously. It’s one thing to have a nice little stipend from the government.” Arnolds smirks cruelly. “But it’s another to find a growing need among the Black Market. You and I both know how valuable sun eagle feathers are for their incendiary properties. And the bodies of their deceased elders have been used to make tonics for ages. But as of late, there are high spenders who’d pay top dollar for a dead, stuffed bird.”
Arnolds steps closer to Karan and kneels in front of him.
“So I thought, ‘why not meet the needs of the important few while lining my pockets as well’?”
“You bas—”
You hear a sharp click and glimpse a thin, black barrel being pressed against Karan’s temple.
“Now, now,” Arnolds says. “There’s no need to be rude.”
His cold blue eyes dart over and meet yours.
“Especially when the cute little biologist you’ve been carrying a torch for can have a little accident.”
You freeze, but a breath still escapes you.
“What?”
A sharp bout of laughter pierces your ears.
“Doesn’t matter now,” Arnolds says. “Tell me what you think of this headline, Karan. ‘Top sanctuary guard found deceased on site; endangered species biologist goes missing’.” You press your body closer to the ground as Arnolds pins you in place with his sharp gaze.
“Gotta keep the supply of sun eagles happy, healthy, and viable, right?” Arnolds stands. “Take her. Kill the rest.”
Everything happens in a blur. There a knife against the silk rope. Foreign, clammy hands dig into your arms. Maura bears her fangs. You peer up into the barrel of a gun. An enraged hiss, an injured scream. A shot rings out. Darkness envelops your vision and you know no more.
------------------------------------------------------------------
You come to thanks to an insistent beeping… and something cool rubbing the inside of your forearm. You shift and the coolness gentle grasps your wrist. Someone whispers your name.
“…Karan?” you mutter.
“I’m right here,” he says gently.
Squinting against the fluorescent light hurts more than it should. Doesn’t help that your head is pounding, too. But it slowly subsides and you come face to face with Karan. His red-rimmed golden eyes peer down at you and he smiles.
“Hey there,” he whispers with a croak. The corners of your lips lift just a bit.
“Hey yourself. What…what happened?”
Karan strokes your skin and explains. In the ensuing chaos, the sanctuary guards were able to fight back against Arnolds and his men. Maura was quick to down the more dangerous of the armed poachers with her venom, while Bashnog was able to disarm the majority.
Panicking, Arnolds fired his gun and shot you. Thankfully, the bullet ended up passing through a non-vital area. But the shock of being injured made your mind shut down temporarily.
“After that,” Karan says, “I saw red. When I came back to myself, Arnolds was downed with bloody claw marks across his stomach. I carried you back to the camp while Maura tended to your wound. Bashnog informed law enforcement of Arnolds’ plot. He and his remaining men were taken into government custody. And you…”
His voice quivers. You gently pull your arm out of his grip then lace your fingers with his, being careful of his claws. He squeezes your hand.
“I’m still here,” you say.
“But you may not have been,” he whispers.
Tears trail down his cheek, catching on the smaller scales dotting his face as he says your name.
“I have never hated you. The reason for my off-standish behavior during the first day…that wasn’t the first time I saw you.”
Karan inhales a silent breath then releases it.
“A week prior to your arrival, I was made aware of the biologists who would come to sanctuary. Files, including photographs, were sent my way.”
His eyes find your and hold your gaze.
“Seeing your photo took my breath away.”
Heat surges into your cheeks as you try to speak. But Karan gently presses the pad of index finger against your lips.
“Please, let me finish.” You nod as your pulse speeds up. He pulls his hand away from your face and you shiver.
“I did all I could to deny my attraction to you. After all, such a thing in a professional setting wouldn’t be conducive to our work. But when I saw you in person that first day, my interest in you grew tenfold. If I hadn’t turn and left at that moment, I feared I would’ve said something horribly foolish.”
“Karan…”
“So. To answer your question, I have never once hated you. If anything, you have been a constant thought in the back of my mind. And when at the forefront, you made the worst of days much more bearable. That is the truth.”
You swallow at the lump building in your throat and smile.
“That explains a lot,” you whisper as if sharing a secret with him. “Mind if I say something?”
“What is it?”
“The feeling is mutual.”
He smiles, and it’s as warm as you knew it would be. Backlit by the lights above, he slowly leans down towards you. You close your eyes, consenting and waiting.
A sharp beeping interrupts the moment, making your cringe.
Karan hisses against the noise. The door to your hospital room opens and a male nurse rushes in. All while Maura and Bashnog peep inside from opposite sides of the doorjamb. The nurse begins chastising Karan, and it’s the first time you’ve seen him startled. You can’t help but laugh as the nurse starts pushing him towards the entrance, saying he can visit later, after you have calmed down. But there’s no way you’re letting this chance pass by.
“Hey Karan!”
He looks at you over his shoulder.
“How does a date sound?”
He grins. “Perfect.”
And you can’t help but silently agree.

Brooklyn’s Sweetheart Chapter 2: Diamonds Are Forever, Those Boys Ain’t
Pairing: Stucky x Reader
Chapter Summary: They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but can diamonds keep her company all summer at Martha’s Vineyard? She didn’t think so.
Word Count: 4,336
Warnings: Language, drinking, eventual smut
Masterlist / AO3
The next morning, Y/N sat at the kitchen table, eating the Eggs Benedict their chef, Rita, had made, when her father walked in.
Obadiah sat down at the kitchen table and stared at his daughter. “Good morning.”
“Morning, Daddy,” she greeted him, her voice light.
“What do you want?”
It was his way of apologizing for the night before. They’d been through this enough times that it was now a routine.
When he yelled at her during her celebratory end-of-eighth-grade-sleepover, she got a brand-new MacBook out of it. When he screamed at her homecoming date in sophomore year, he gave her a St. Bernard puppy. When he cursed out her coach at her state qualifiers swim meet the year before, he bought her a white gold and diamond tennis bracelet.
She wore the bracelet now, and the dog, a Sweet Good Boy named Hermes, sat at her feet, looking warily up at her father. Hermes and Obadiah had quite the hateful relationship.
Hermes was just a good judge of character.
“I want Steve and Bucky to come with me this summer.”
She had thought about it all last night, knowing her father would come to her this morning with a peace offering—more like a way of buying her forgiveness. And she knew what she wanted, which was to spend the summer with her two closest friends since childhood.
Every summer, her father sent her off to their vacation houses. The cabin in the Adirondacks, the beach house in the Hamptons, the cottage at Martha’s Vineyard. Each time, she was accompanied by a small entourage—people to keep her safe and to keep her from being bored, because of course her parents weren’t about to spend the entire summer with their daughter.
Steve and Bucky had gone with her on several of these trips but had made no plans to be with her for this summer, which was outrageous to her because they were the perfect pair to keep her both safe and entertained.
She was headed to the cottage in a week and she wanted her favorite boys to be there, no matter if one was not speaking to her and the other had forced a very interesting kiss on her the night before.
So maybe the kiss she shared with Bucky had prompted this whole idea, but she sure as hell couldn’t ask her father for only Bucky to come. That would be suspicious. And she did miss Steve, so she hoped this would give her the chance to smooth things over with him.
Even if he was a big dumb blond hunk of meat.
“That’s all you want?” her father asked suspiciously, expecting the other shoe to drop.
“Yes,” she nodded.
“Really?” he stole a piece of toast from her plate, and she glared at him. As he chewed, he said, “You know, diamonds are forever, those boys ain’t.”
Simpering, she quipped, “Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend hasn’t met Steve and Bucky.” Then, “A new Balenciaga bag would sweeten the deal. But mostly I just want them with me for the whole summer.”
“Sure thing, sweetie, whatever you want.”
As their weekly mob meeting later that night finished up, Obadiah broke the news to Steve and Bucky. It worked out well for Obadiah. He hadn’t known who he was going to send with his daughter to protect her until she made the decision for him. Stark had taken an interest in the Rogers kid for some reason, had big plans for him over the summer, but he had managed to talk Stark into letting him go at least for a little while.
“You two will be accompanying Y/N this summer,” Obadiah said with an air of finality, “Your job is to keep her safe and happy.”
That had always been their job. To anybody remotely concerned, that was Bucky’s and Steve’s sole purpose for being alive.
They hadn’t been doing that good of a job of it for the last few months—at least not the “keeping her happy” part.
The boys didn’t argue—not to Obadiah’s face. They didn’t have a death wish.
“You’re leaving in a week for Martha’s Vineyard.”
Tony sent them a look that told them he approved of this and they had no choice in the matter, before he exited behind Obadiah.
Sam waggled his eyebrows at them. “Make sure to pack your swim trunks, boys. Oh, and you’ll have to find a guard-dog-friendly beach. Pets allowed, and all that.” He snickered as Bucky flipped him off before he exited the room.
As the last two in the meeting room, Bucky and Steve looked at each other. Bucky’s gaze was pleading—Steve had barely spoken to him the entire day, and when he had, it had been clipped statements that simmered with an angry undertone. Steve’s gaze now was even angrier.
“What the fuck, Bucky?”
That was all Steve said before leaving.
Bucky had no idea why Steve was so mad—aside from the obvious fact that he kissed Y/N. Even then, Bucky thought it was hypocritical of Steve to be mad over such a thing considering he had also kissed Y/N last year. Bucky had told Steve as much earlier, and Steve only responded by getting even angrier.
Bucky made his way into the kitchen, where everyone was gathered for the big family dinner they always had every Sunday, right after the official weekly meeting. Tonight, Tony’s chefs had prepared a variety of Indian cuisine for them.
He spotted Y/N on the other side of the kitchen. She had just come in from the backyard with Peter Parker, Tony’s boy, and she was barefoot. Bucky started to make his way over to her but Steve got there before he did. Peter scurried away when Steve made eye contact with him.
“So,” Steve said, sidling up to her right by the kitchen table, effectively trapping her between him and the table. “Martha’s Vineyard, huh?” His voice was hard, slightly annoyed.
She looked up at him with that sweet smile. Her lips were glossy with lip balm and she smelled like the sun. “Yeah, I thought it would be fun. Are you excited?”
He sighed her name, exasperated.
“Hey,” she said before he could say anything else, “I’m wearing the necklace you got me. Thank you, it’s perfect. I love it.” She hooked her thumb around the chain and showed him the gift he got for her birthday. It was a silver locket, an engraving of the sun on the front.
His eyes softened when he saw that, and he smiled at her genuinely for the first time in a year. “I’m glad you like it.”
“I’m not sure what pictures I should put in it, yet,” she said, fingers opening and closing the latch of the locket with a little snap. “Maybe we’ll take some good photos at Martha’s Vineyard.”
He hesitated before asking, “Why did you want us there this summer?”
“I miss you guys,” she answered earnestly. “You never spend time with me anymore. And next semester, I’ll probably be at NYU, maybe. And then I’ll never be around and I’ll never see either of you.”
“Sweetheart—”
“I just want one summer with you guys. Is that too much to ask for?” Her puppy dog eyes hit him in just the right spot.
“No,” he sighed, giving her a small smile, “No, it’s not too much… It’ll be fun. We’re excited.”
Y/N parted from him then, squeezing past him to make her way into the living room to talk to Wanda and Pietro Maximoff before dinner started.
Bucky came over to Steve and Steve sighed. “I couldn’t stay mad at her.”
“You don’t really have a reason to be mad at her,” Bucky pointed out, “Not really.”
“I know…” he turned to Bucky, eyeing him. “Do I have a reason to be mad at you, Buck?”
Bucky shrugged. “I told you, the kiss was an accident. Doesn’t mean anything.”
“Yeah… Okay… Sorry for bein’ an ass.”
“S’okay,” Bucky clapped him on the back. “I’m used to it by now.”
Steve laughed and punched at Bucky’s shoulder, and then dinner was called.
A week later, Steve and Bucky were packing their suitcases into the SUV for them to get ready to go on the six-hour trip to Martha’s Vineyard. They had gotten a late start and probably wouldn’t be there until it was dark.
Steve drove and Bucky rode shotgun, dictating the music the entire drive—much to Steve’s and Y/N’s chagrin. She sat in the back with Hermes and chattered with them both about nothing for the first half of the drive.
They were already behind schedule, and it was only made worse when Bucky and Y/N demanded they stop for a bathroom break about three times each—Steve was seething by the last time. He calmed down when she came back from the gas station convenience store with a bag of M&M’s for him—his favorite candy.
They had stopped for a late lunch at a pizza place in Boston—and had gone 40 minutes out of their way for it. Between the three of them, they had devoured three pizzas and a whole basket of garlic knots. It had sent Y/N into a food-induced stupor. By the time they were pulling up to the Stanes’ cottage, she was fast asleep, using the dog as a pillow.
He and Steve carried all the luggage in before they contemplated waking her up.
“Let her sleep,” Bucky said, “She’ll probably be out for the rest of the night.”
“I’ll carry her in,” Steve said as Hermes jumped out, “Can you get the dog?”
Bucky obliged. He let the dog go into the fenced-in backyard.
The cottage at Martha’s Vineyard wasn’t so much a cottage as a 6-bedroom converted-barn-turned-luxury-mansion overlooking the water, complete with a big fancy backyard and a pool and access to the beachside and a private dock. Bucky was always blown away every time they visited and this time was no different.
He stood in the backyard admiring the black waters while Hermes did his business.
“I set her on the couch,” Steve said, startling Bucky.
Bucky looked back to see Steve on the porch, taking a seat on the porch swing that faced the ocean. He walked over, taking a seat next to him. Their arms brushed together as they settled in.
“Here,” Steve said, handing him a bottle of whiskey. “They’ve got this place stocked with liquor but no food. We’ll have to make a grocery run tomorrow.”
Bucky grunted in response as he took a long drink. It had been a long day, and truthfully, all he could think of doing right now was going to bed. Instead, he stayed up with Steve, ready to relax on their vacation after the last stressful few months.
Tony had taken Steve under his wing, mentoring him into a more important place in the mob. It was the start of something big, Steve kept saying. Bucky was excited for his friend, if not a little jealous. But Steve deserved it, he knew; Steve was always the more determined of the two of them, always the more ruthless one.
So tonight, Bucky welcomed the respite. As they chatted and ribbed each other over the bottle of whiskey, it was like nothing had changed.
The conversation had turned to Steve and Peggy, and Steve was saying, “Yeah, Peg’s great, but I dunno. She doesn’t really get it.”
“Get what?” But Bucky had a feeling he knew what Steve was talking about. He took another swig of whiskey before passing the bottle to Steve.
“The mob, the life we live. She doesn’t know the half of it, and if she did… She wouldn’t stick with me through it.”
“You need someone who already knows our life, Stevie. Someone who understands.”
Steve was quiet for a moment before saying, “Someone like Y/N?”
Bucky stiffened. That hadn’t been what he was going for, but Y/N was on the back of his mind when he said it. She had been on his mind since last week. He laughed it off. “C’mon, Stevie, you think Stane would let you have her?”
“Stane’s been thinking of who to marry her off to,” Steve said after a long drink. “Only reason he’s letting her go to NYU is ‘cause he hasn’t had any good contenders yet.”
“And you think you’re gonna put in an offer?”
Steve scoffed. “No. I’m dating Peggy, Buck. C’mon.”
“But if you weren’t?”
Steve looked beside him to find Bucky already staring at him intently. They made eye contact, the air between them tense. Finally, Steve shrugged. “I’m not sure, Buck. Maybe I should be askin’ you the same thing.”
“Does it look like I’m ready to settle down and take a bride?” he asked, giving Steve and incredulous look. Steve laughed and looked down at his lap, shaking his head, doing that bashful thing even when Bucky knew he wasn’t bashful at all. “Besides, I wouldn’t do that to her.”
Steve knew what he meant. Tying her to the mob, for as long as they both shall live. Mob wives were much more involved than the children of the mob, and they both knew Y/N was too sweet and innocent for that.
Steve’s smile fell away and he nodded, thinking it over. “Yeah. I wouldn’t want to either.”
They had both had quite a bit of whiskey by now, and Bucky was feeling brave. “Tell me about when you kissed her, Stevie.”
Steve’s eyes widened and he looked at Bucky with a shocked expression. “You know about that?”
“Yeah, she told me the other night,” Bucky answered, taking the bottle from Steve as he was about to take a drink. “’Fess up, punk. Don’t avoid the question.”
He let out a long sigh, his shoulders drooping, hands braced on his knees. “Fine. But you can’t tell anyone.”
“Who the fuck would I tell?”
Steve swatted at his knee. “I don’t fucking know, just keep your mouth shut about it. Got it?” When Bucky nodded, Steve continued. “It was the end of last summer when we were all in Southampton. She snuck out with some of her friends to a party one night, and I caught her coming back late. I was just startin’ to lay into her about it when she started crying—and not her usual crying when she’s bein’ a brat, you know?”
Bucky knew. She got real teary eyed sometimes when they caught her doing something she shouldn’t have been, specifically when Steve started yelling at her. But usually she took his scolding with a stiff upper lip, unless he was being really unfair.
“She starts sobbing, and I can tell something’s really wrong. So I hug her and coddle her and eventually she tells me that some guys at the party were makin’ fun of her because she’s a virgin.” Steve clenched his jaw, remembering the way she blushed when she told him, the way she looked down and whispered it like she was ashamed of it. “And so I’m trying to tell her there’s nothing wrong with that, and she tells me she’s never even kissed anyone, and how is any guy ever gonna like her if she doesn’t even have any experience.”
“So you kissed her?” Bucky asked, remembering Y/N had said that he had offered.
Steve shook his head, laughing a little. “I don’t know what came over me. She was just so sad, and you know I have a soft spot for girls when they cry.”
Bucky knew very well about Steve’s weakness for people when they cried—not just girls. He and Steve had experimented in bed plenty of times and if there was one thing they had found out, it was that Steve loved it when Bucky cried. It really got him going for some reason.
“I wouldn’t call it a soft spot…” Bucky muttered, earning a punch on the arm. Steve still laughed about it good-naturedly.
“She was lookin’ up at me, all doe-eyed, and red, and sad. Kinda like how you used to look at me, Buck.”
Bucky looks at him, surprised, and memories of their times together flash through Bucky’s mind. They were each other’s firsts, stumbling their way through puberty and coming-of-age and the discovery of teenaged sexuality together. It wasn’t until after he experimented thoroughly with Steve in many different ways that he became the Lothario he is today. He feels his cheeks heat up at the images his brain conjures of them together in bed, touching and kissing, dry-humping each other until Bucky came in his pants.
“Yeah, like that,” Steve said, looking at him with a fond smile, something dark gleaming in his eyes. And truly, Steve thinks Bucky looks wonderful right now, all flushed and shocked and exactly like he did when Steve fucked him for the first time when they were 16.
So maybe Steve has a type for innocent young things who blush a lot. That’s why he was trying to stay away from Y/N. Maybe that’s why Steve had always felt like Peggy was wrong for him but staying with Peggy was such a great distraction for now.
“So I couldn’t help myself,” Steve shrugged. “I asked. I didn’t just force myself on her.” Part of Bucky feels sheepish at that, because that was exactly how he kissed her the night of her birthday, forcefully, predatorily. The other part remembers how nice it was every time Steve forced himself on Bucky in the heat of the moment. “I asked if she wanted me to kiss her just to see how it felt. And she said yes. So I kissed her.”
“Did you like it?” Bucky asked. He couldn’t help it.
The blush on Steve’s cheeks surprised Bucky. “Yeah, I guess I did. But don’t you ever tell anyone that.”
Bucky rolled his eyes. As if he would. “If you liked it, why’d you ignore her afterwards?”
“What? I didn’t!”
“Don’t bullshit me, Steve. You can’t bullshit me, I see right through you, pal.”
Steve looked down. The red hadn’t faded from his cheeks. “I dunno. I liked it too much, maybe. Stane would kill me if anything happened between us.”
Bucky got it, then. Steve liked it, and he needed to put distance between them to stop himself from taking things further.
“And then I found Peggy, and I just got too busy with Tony. So Y/N and I stopped talking as much.”
Bucky thought about this, but in his tipsiness, his dazed mind kept wandering back to how he kissed her. He kissed her like Steve used to kiss him, and he wondered if Steve kissed her the same way.
“How was it, Stevie?” he asked, a question that had been on his mind for a week now. “How was the kiss?”
Steve smirked knowingly. “Nothing like how I used to kiss you, that’s for sure.”
Bucky remembered their first few times together, sweet and tentative, innocent explorations. Steve had kissed him kindly then, but they had both quickly found out they liked it when Steve took charge. When Steve was rough with him, showed him no mercy.
But Bucky only liked it when Steve did that to him. None of the other men or women he had been with were the same in that regard. He only trusted Steve to take that power away from him, knowing Steve would never hurt him.
He supposed Steve liked the control aspect of it. As for Bucky, he needed that control whenever he was with anybody else.
“Guys?” they heard from the doorway after a brief silence. Hermes, who had been lying at their feet dozing, immediately got up and trotted over to where Y/N was standing, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
“Hey, sweetie,” Steve said, “You just wake up?”
She nodded and padded over to them, Hermes following her loyally. Her feet were bare and she was still wearing her clothes from earlier, leggings and an oversized sweatshirt with her high school’s mascot on the front. Bucky thought the sweatshirt had belonged to Steve once, or maybe him—or maybe both, he couldn’t recall.
She took a seat between them and slumped down onto Bucky’s shoulder. “I’m tired,” There was a little pout on her lips, puffy and sleep-swollen.
“Then go back to bed,” Bucky told her, draping his right arm around the back of the bench, letting her rest her head on his chest.
“Can’t fall back asleep.”
“Are you hungry?” Steve asked, ever the doting mother hen. “There’s not food in the kitchen, but maybe we could go pick something up.”
She shook her head. “I’m still full from the pizza.”
“Well, we’ll go for an early breakfast tomorrow,” Steve said, “Any place you want.”
“Okay, Stevie,” she said, smiling up at him sleepily.
Steve couldn’t help himself when he swung an arm around her shoulders, pulling her to rest on his chest instead. She went willingly, cuddling into him. Bucky sent him a look, and Steve raised an eyebrow back—a little like a challenge, one that Bucky did not accept. Instead, he yielded to Steve, resting his right hand lightly on Steve’s shoulder, feeling the need to be close. Her legs came up to rest on Bucky’s lap and she just sat there with them, enjoying the night.
Just like old times.
“Are you guys staying with me for the whole summer?” she asked, her voice muffled into Steve’s unusually large peck.
“I dunno, doll, is that what you asked your dad for?” Steve asked knowingly.
She shrugged and buried her face deeper. “Maybe. Doesn’t mean he’ll keep his word.”
“We’re here until further notice,” Bucky said. “Steve might get called away occasionally.”
“Because of Tony?” she asked, her voice small.
“Yeah,” Steve said, pressing his lips to the crown of her head in a kiss, “But you don’t need to worry your pretty head about that.”
“Okay.”
“Now, doll,” Bucky started, placing his left hand on her calf. She glanced at him from Steve’s chest. “Are you gonna behave with us this summer?”
She blushed, but a smirk fell across her face. “Of course I will, Bucky,” she said in a tone that implied the exact opposite.
His hand slid up to her knee. “Not gonna go getting into any trouble with all the teenage hooligans on the island?”
She rolled her eyes. “Why would I want to get in trouble with them when I could get in trouble with you guys, instead?”
Steve’s arm tightened around her shoulders in a way that was just a little bit threatening. “Now, Y/N, listen to me,” he said, using his serious voice, “Your dad wanted us to keep you safe. You’re not gonna go around making trouble for us. Got it?”
“I guess,” she whined. Steve didn’t like that.
His hand came up and cupped her jaw, tilting her head up forcefully so she looked at him. “Don’t be a brat,” he said, a warning in his tone, “You’re gonna be a good girl for us or there’ll be consequences.”
“Steve,” she pouted, the whine still in her voice.
He grit his teeth, and his fingers squeezed her jaw just hard enough for her to get the message. “No complaining, baby girl. Now you say ‘Yes, Steve’, so I know you understand.”
“…Yes, Steve.”
He let her go, and she tried to pull away from him but his arm around her shoulders anchored her against him. Bucky’s hand moved from Steve’s shoulder to her head, stroking his fingers through her soft hair to sooth and reassure her.
They were all silent then, like they often were after Steve scolded her. It was a familiar dance for them. When she got bratty or if she did something wrong, Steve would reprimand her sternly, while Bucky sat by and watched. Then, both Bucky and Steve would calm her down so she knew they forgave her. It worked to correct her misbehavior every time, but it took all three of them.
With Steve rocking them gently on the porch swing and Bucky running his fingers through her hair, it didn’t take long to lull her back to sleep.
Steve carried her upstairs to put her to bed, and Bucky followed, turning down the covers and tucking her in. Hermes curled up on the bed at her feet, settling down and dozing off right next to her.
Steve had already placed their luggage in the rooms they would be staying in, all their rooms side by side in the same hall.
Bucky followed Steve to their respective bedrooms, and they lingered in the doorways.
“Do you think I was too hard on her?” Steve asked. They spoke quietly in the mellow darkness of the night. Bucky could hear the waves crashing on the beach out back.
“Nah,” Bucky reassured him, “She can take it. Plus, it’d be nice if she didn’t act up during this trip.” He could hope she wouldn’t, at least.
Steve nodded. “She gets so ballsy on these vacations when her dad’s not here.”
“Well,” Bucky said, clapping him on the shoulder, “If she gets like that this summer, you’re here to put her in her place.”
Steve looked at him, dark eyes glinting. “Damn right,” he said, voice low. Bucky couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but Steve’s tone of voice sent a shudder through him. “We should get to bed,” Steve said finally, breaking up the tense atmosphere. “I’m waking you both up early tomorrow.”
Bucky groaned, “Ugh, c’mon Stevie. Let us sleep in.”
Steve grinned, “No chance, Buck. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight,” Bucky said, his voice soft as he watched Steve retreat into his bedroom, closing the door behind him with a soft click.
He let out a deep breath, rubbing a hand over his face. It was going to be a long, intense summer, he could already tell.

A complete Annapurna Base Camp Trek
One of the best ways to explore and come across the spectacular beauty of the Himalayas is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Hundreds and thousands of travel enthusiasts venture on this amazing adventurous journey every year, with one motto to dwell in the charm of the glistening snowy Himalayan mountains. No doubt Annapurna Base Camp Trekking falls under the most admired trails in the Himalayas.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek leads to the lap of the world's tenth highest mountain, Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m). The journey lets you witness some of the most stunning massifs, fine mountain villages, dense forests, breath-taking sceneries, and the kind locals.
Along with all this pleasure and adventure comes lots of prior preparations. To make the trek successful, there are lots of things that are required to be properly planned and executed. And, this should be done by both sides, the travel agency and the guest.
In this blog, we are going to share detailed information about the Annapurna Base Camp Trek route, and all the things that you should know before joining the trip.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Route
As per your time availability, you can choose one of our Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary or custom design your own. We offer a range of Annapurna Base Camp Trekking packages from short 3 days Annapurna Base Camp Trek to 15 day Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Usually, Annapurna Base Camp Trek begins from a scenic flight/drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From here, a short drive takes you to the starting point of the trek, Nayapul.
The trail from Nayapul gradually ascends through Tikhedhunga and leads you to the beautiful Ghorepani village. The next morning, you hike to Poon Hill to witness a glorious sunrise and wonderful views of the western Himalayan mountains. Further, the trail passes by lush rhododendron forests and fine villages like Ghandruk, Tadapani, Chhomrong, and Himalaya. Before reaching the Annapurna Base Camp, you pass by Machhapuchhre Base Camp. After exploring ABC, you descend through Bamboo and stop at Jhinu Danda to enjoy a natural hot spring. The trail then takes back to Nayapul, which marks the end of Annapurna Base Camp Trekking.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek difficulty & Altitude sickness
Annapurna Base Camp Trek route follows a moderate trail. If you are an experienced trekker, then this trek will be a piece of cake for you. However, if you are a beginner trekker, the trail can get a little difficult for you because of long walking, many ascend & descends, and trodden paths. Regardless of the difficulty, anyone can do Annapurna Base Camp Trek if he/she is healthy and physically fit.
Annapurna Base Camp Trekking is a high altitude trek, which automatically involves the risk of altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness. This trek takes you above 4,000 meters in a matter of a few days. Altitude sickness can get really scary and troublesome if not handled properly on time.
To lower the chances of AMS, we take all the measures during the trek. Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary is crafted including ample rest days along with a constant increase in elevation. Moreover, our professional guides make sure you are not having any discomfort on the trail, and check-upon you every day.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Map
Best season to go on Annapurna Base Camp Trek
As a matter of fact, you can go to Annapurna Base Camp Trek throughout the year. It completely depends on your preference and circumstances. With that being said, you have to know all the pros and cons of traveling in each of the seasons so that you can choose what is best for you.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the best times to go on Annapurna Base Camp Trek because of low precipitation and mild-temperature. The days are usually bright and sunny, which makes the views clear. In the early days of the spring, you will experience coldness in the air that later changes into warmer days. Due to high elevation, there can be chances of snowfall in March, but other months will be fine. Likewise, the trail welcomes numerous vegetation and flora at this time of the year.
Summer (June to Mid- September)
The temperature ranges between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius on average in summer. The lower altitude is comparatively warmer than the high altitude. Still, you can walk and enjoy the trek. Similarly, the monsoon hits slowly in these months with chances of heavy rainfall. We recommend you, start the day early and reach your destination on time so that you do not get stuck in rain.
The weather gets very unpredictable, and it cannot be said when rainfall will occur. The trail can get slippery with bugs and unclear views, however, the rain-washed view is one of the best views one can admire. As it is off-season, the trail is less crowded as well.
Autumn ( October to November)
Autumn is the most preferred time to go on Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It is the peak season, and you can see many fellow trekkers from all around the world. There can be 6 mm of precipitation in October, however, November is mostly clear and bright with a hint of chillness in the air. The temperature ranges anywhere from 17 degrees celsius to 11 degrees celsius. Likewise, the views are fantastic and alluring. Other than the pleasant weather, festivals make this season more attractive to join the trek. Nepalis celebrate the range of their most important festivals in the autumn.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is the coldest time of the year in the Himalayas. The temperature can fall below -19 degrees Celsius at the base camp. There can be unpredicted chances of heavy snowfall, strong wind, and avalanches. Winter is considered off-season. Photographers are the ones who usually approach this time of the year to trek to Annapurna Base Camp. The views can be either unclear or breath-taking, depending on the weather. You need to precisely prepare for the trek if you are planning to join in winter. Also, know that most of the teahouses get closed on the higher elevation due to cold.
Food & Accommodations on Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Annapurna Base Camp Trekking trail offers a wide range of cuisines to dig in from typical Nepali dishes to Indian, Tibetan, and Continental. During the trek, we offer three meals a day- breakfast, lunch & dinner. All the meals will be served as per the menu of the guesthouse/teahouse. However, we want you to know that the taste of the dishes may not be the same as the city one because of species.
For breakfast, you can find oatmeal, toast (with jam, honey, peanut butter), Tibetan bread, corn flakes, porridge, pancakes, eggs, hashed brown, muesli, etc. Likewise, lunch and dinner usually consist of thukpa, dal bhat, momo, pasta, soups, steaks, burgers, pizza, veggies, curries, chapati (Indian/Tibetan bread), etc. Similarly, a wide range of drinks like tea, coffee, juice, hot chocolates, milk, etc is also available.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a must to have to join Annapurna Base Camp Trekking. ABC Trek takes you to a very remote part of the Himalayas, where the basic infrastructure is underdeveloped. Likewise, the weather is unpredictable. No one knows what holds in the next moment in the Himalayas. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to have well-covered travel insurance before joining the trek.
Things like air evacuations, medical bills, and hospital bills are mandatory to have in the insurance. We also recommend adding loss or theft of personal properties and flight cancellation in your travel insurance. The Nepal government does not allow foreigners to take out travel insurance in Nepal, therefore you are requested to get one in your home country, and carry all the documents with you during the journey.

Okay, this was becoming outrageously ridiculous, Eden thought to herself as she vigorously brushed her teeth and glared at her own reflection come Monday morning. How was it that she was a good, wholesome Catholic student who mimed her prayers and ate her vegetables and yet, her dorm had suddenly become a prison? Why did Kat get to do that? Why did Kat always get to exist and exist hard while people like Eden, who politely shared a room with her, simply tried to blend in with the wallpaper? And actually, while she was on the thought-topic, what authorized her to constantly make Eden’s life a chronic buzz of Bishop Issues where she had no choice but to come back to her safe space and be exposed to it? Why? What in the Lord’s name of right and reason was so bad in Kat’s life that she’d all of a sudden married her bed?
Foolishly, at first, Eden had thought it was a peace offering from God. A little sorry I made you deal with her for 3 years, here is a weekend of peace and quiet in return. But then, as the days turned to night and Kat hardly seemed to get out of bed except to empty her bladder, Eden felt weird about it. Was it worry? Concern? Distrust? It was all of the above, to be honest. Because Kat never stayed home on weekends, and now that she thought about it, where was Loud Mouth McMaddy, the Indian Idiot and Obscenely Over Dramatic Drea? It was about time they came kicking down their shared door and making Eden wish they were all insects she could smoke out with repellent.
Coming back into the room, Eden was about to collect her things and go meet up with a freshman before classes when she realized she needed lip balm. Despite all their chaotic differences, it was safe to say that since Stowe, Kat and Eden had actually kind of made a bit of a bridge between them. It might have been rickety and made out of the cheapest plywood around, but it was there, so Eden didn’t mind helping herself to Kat’s abundance of cosmetics. She’d said she could and Eden was not an over-abuser, so this one thing was barely even worth mentioning, right?
Going over to the shelving where she knew Kat kept her abundance of weird, organic, cruelty-free products, Eden began to rifle through them with Kat’s lump remaining in bed with barely a stir. Ignoring her, Eden picked up a small tub that had Chinese symbols on it. No, she didn’t rust that. She put it back. On her way to catching a glimpse of what she’d been looking for though, Eden frowned for a moment, reaching for a green bottle that looked like something it couldn’t be and twisting it around. Alas, low and behold, slapped across the front was a bright pink was PRENATAL which had Eden snatching it off the shelf to inspect closer. What in the name...?! Oh no. There was no way. Actually, yes there was a way, if she thought about it for a second more, she decided that she believed it. With the insane weekend of secrets being bombed over Kat and her friends that Eden heard about because the walls were only so thin and her earplugs only did so much, that crazy argument she’d caught a line from with Damian yesterday, Kat staying in bed all weekend—
Oh no.
“Kat.” Her bedsheets were stripped back suddenly, torn from Kat’s tangled sleep-paralysis state and floofing blond hair about from it’s messy top-knot that Eden was pretty sure she’d seen her tie up on Friday night and it was now Monday morning. Gross. “Kat, get up! We’ve got World Religion in an hour but first you need to explain to me why on Earth you have these.” She flashed the pill container, “Look, I know I said I don’t ever want to know your business after that thing with the bedside banana but this is serious. If something’s going on... if you’re-” Eugh, pregnant?! “If you need help, I need to know for my own sanity that this isn’t the only thing you’ve Googled about what you need to do. Because it’s not as simple as that.” Good God, she hoped there was some dumb Katherine Bishop excuse for this and that her roommate — her roommate that she’d only just finally started to build a relationship with, mind you — was not about to become a seventeen year old parent. How stupid could she be? This was really out of the ballpark figure for Kat and Eden hoped she knew that. But... she also hoped she knew that Eden cared. In her own, weird way, she did.
