#What’s it like working as a Maritime Lawyer

I decided to do some #GordPosting in the style (very roughly) of one of my favorite writers here; @seat-safety-switch. My Coleman lantern of writing can only approximate the white-hot star that is their work, but I hope that it is taken with the fondness that it was written.
So it strikes me that sapients today just don't understand the classics. I'm not talking about music, or theater or even motion pictures. I'm talking about lawbreaking. I'll be the first to admit that in today's connected galaxy, it's tough to know whether the water that the waiter brings you is free or if you are supposed to take things that someone carelessly left locked up in their storage locker at the spaceport. I'm talking more about old-school lawbreaking.
Now, my shark of a lawyer is quick to interrupt my musings and remind me for the umpeenteth time that what I'm doing right now is lawbreaking but I smack the plastic case that contains his soul or something and he shuts up. I point out that bringing sapients of all kinds the wares that they desire and they are willing to give me cash, hockey memorabilia or hardly used starship parts that nobody will really miss for is hardly breaking the law.
It's commerce.
Commerce can't be against the law, there's a whole chamber about it. Everyone knows if the government does it, it's not against the law.
It was at this time that the Medicine Hat - the ship I work with - sees fit to chime in their own opinion about our undertaking. In their utterly unintelligible Maritimes accent, they once again remind me that they haven't had any Cheezies in a dog's age and when are we going back to Lethbridge to get more and so on and so forth. At least, that's what I think they're saying. Nobody can understand what they're saying half the time anyway. I assume it's nothing that important.
Where was I? Oh yeah, breaking the law. Sapients today just don't understand the minutia and wheels within wheels of breaking the law. But that's why you're here. You're here to listen to me and tell every authority you see that you haven't seen me in weeks, don't know who I am, what the hell are you doing pig, where's your warrant, I have my rights, stop hitting me like that. Now, hand me that spanner, I almost have this wormhole generator off it's cradle and the Hat needs an upgrade.

( lesley-ann brandt, forty-two, cis woman, she/her ) ☼ i know it’s a small town, but i run into CORINA TULSI every time i go to THE SECRET WOODS. it’s like they practically live there and not THE TIDAL POOLS for TEN YEARS. it must be because they’re EXPRESSIVE and BOSSY. come to think of it, that’s probably why they’re a TRAVELLING FISHERMAN too. but i did hear they want to CATCH THE LEGENDARY CRIMSONFISH, and sometimes they like to WHITTLE LITTLE ANIMALS. rumor has it they also like SEAFOAM PUDDING but dislike TRUFFLES. what do you think?
hellaur it's me (: this is corina. she calls herself a pirate, but she's actually like the biggest rule follower to ever follow rules. nautical lawyer? i barely know her!
!! war mention !! throwing up mention !!
corina grew up in the gotoro empire. like kent, her dad enlisted in the war and had been away for most of corina's life. when people ask her about her father, all she remembers is the smell of black coffee and the feeling of a 5 o'clock shadow against her cheek.
corina's mother was a strong woman. but as strong as she was, she was also gentle. corina's mother had a best friend who also had a kid. she treated that kid as if they were her own. if it weren't for the fact that they looked nothing alike, corina and [name here, idk possible future connection, i'm thinking 23842398 steps ahead bro] would have looked like siblings.
corina always felt stifled. she was just too big for her britches. she knew that there was more to life beyond the gem sea. the gotoro empire had siphoned the vibrancy and life out of her hometown, and corina desperately needed more. that being said, she never pushed the boundaries of the life she had. she was loudly obnoxious, but quietly obedient. she would make a mess in the kitchen and storm off when she got scolded. hours later, once her mom was back asleep, she would sneak back downstairs to clean it all up.
as soon as she turned 18, she joined the crew of a merchant ship. unfortunately, the merchant ship followed the strict maritime boundaries of the gotoro empire. as mentioned before, corina thirsted for life beyond the gem sea. since then she's worked odd jobs along the docks, her favorite being a crewmember to fishing boats. she liked those suckers.
eventually, she finally crossed a line when she was 25. corina found a merchant who smuggled goods to the ferngill republic, and she negotiated her way onto the ship. she left her mom a note with instructions on how to find her savings (it was a piggy bank. that's all.), and she left her best friend a locket that corina had haggled for on one of the many merchant ships. corina sailed across the gem sea and found herself in the ferngill republic for the first time ever in her life.
she was so anxious about leaving the empire that she threw up multiple times on the trip despite being sea-ready. this anxiety lives with her and she hasn't gone back to the gotoro empire since.
now, she's a traveling fisherman who ports in towns that have access to joja mart as well as became known as traveling merchant hubs. joja mart just made her life so easy. argue with ya mama.
she's soooo pirate-presenting. she's confident and brave. she WILL defend herself in a bar fight, but she'll never start one. she lives on her boat by the tidal pools whenever she's in town, and she's not shy about inviting consenting adults back to rock the boat with her.
she likes to pretend that she understands what the ocean says. sorry to steal any other sea hag thunder. she's just pretending though. she's not a real sea hag. she just thinks it's funny.
she's in town right now because the fish weren't biting and she got bored. perfect timing for the flower dance <3

Understanding Defense Base Act and Longshore Act: Finding the Right Legal Support
Navigating the complexities of workers' compensation claims under the Defense Base Act (DBA) and the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA) can be challenging. These specialized areas of law require expert legal representation to ensure that injured workers receive the benefits they are entitled to. Whether you’re a civilian contractor working overseas under the DBA or a maritime worker covered by the LHWCA, understanding your rights and the importance of hiring a qualified attorney is crucial.
What is the Defense Base Act?
The Defense Base Act is an extension of the LHWCA, providing workers' compensation protection to civilian employees working on U.S. military bases or under contracts with the U.S. government for public works or national defense. If you are a contractor working in a foreign country, you are likely covered by the DBA. This act ensures that injured workers or their survivors receive compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and disability.
Who Needs a Defense Base Act Lawyer?
When dealing with a Defense Base Act claim, it's essential to have an experienced Defense Base Act Law Firm on your side. These legal experts specialize in navigating the intricate procedures associated with DBA claims. They ensure that all necessary documentation is properly filed, deadlines are met, and that the injured worker’s rights are fully protected. Without skilled legal representation, you risk having your claim denied or receiving less compensation than you deserve.
Understanding the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act
The Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA) provides compensation to maritime workers injured while performing duties on navigable waters or adjoining areas like docks, piers, or terminals. The LHWCA covers a broad range of employees, including longshoremen, harbor workers, shipbuilders, and others who work on or near the water. This act is crucial for ensuring that maritime workers receive fair compensation for injuries sustained on the job.
Why You Need Longshore Act Lawyers
Navigating a claim under the LHWCA can be complicated due to the specific requirements and legal intricacies involved. Longshore Act Lawyers are essential in helping injured workers file their claims correctly and timely. These attorneys are well-versed in the nuances of maritime law and understand how to maximize the benefits you are entitled to under the LHWCA. With professional legal assistance, you can avoid the pitfalls that often lead to denied or delayed claims.
Choosing the Right Legal Representation
Selecting the right law firm to handle your DBA or LHWCA claim is critical. You want attorneys who have a proven track record in these specialized areas of law and who are committed to fighting for the compensation you deserve. When looking for a Defense Base Act Law Firm or Longshore Act Lawyers, consider their experience, client testimonials, and success rate in handling similar cases.
Conclusion: Secure Your Future with Expert Legal Help
Whether you’re dealing with a DBA or LHWCA claim, having the right legal representation can make all the difference in the outcome of your case. Don’t leave your future to chance—ensure you have experienced attorneys on your side who understand the complexities of these laws. What role can artwork and decor play in a lawyer cabin design?
In the legal profession, where attention to detail and professionalism are paramount, every element of lawyer cabin design matters. Artwork and décor play a significant role in shaping the ambiance, character, and functionality of these spaces. In this blog, we'll explore the multifaceted role that artwork and décor can play in lawyer cabin design,
1. Setting the Tone: Artwork and décor can set the tone for the lawyer cabin. For instance, a carefully selected piece of artwork can convey gravitas and seriousness, reflecting the lawyer's commitment to their profession.
2. Personalization: Allowing lawyers to personalize their cabins with artwork and décor items that resonate with them can create a sense of ownership and comfort. Personal touches make the cabin feel like their own space.
3. Reflecting Firm Values: Artwork and décor can be chosen to reflect the values and ethos of the law firm. For example, displaying legal awards, mission statements, or historical legal documents can highlight the firm's commitment to excellence and tradition.
4. Enhancing Comfort: The right décor choices, such as comfortable seating, soft furnishings, and cozy lighting, can enhance the comfort and functionality of lawyer cabins. A comfortable cabin supports productivity and well-being.
5. Creating a Focal Point: A well-chosen piece of artwork or a unique décor item can serve as a focal point in the cabin. It draws attention and can become a conversation starter during client meetings.
6. Reflecting Specialization: Lawyers can use artwork and décor to reflect their area of specialization or legal interests. For instance, a maritime lawyer might incorporate nautical-themed décor. This reinforces their expertise to clients.
7. Meeting Client Expectations: Artwork and décor can help lawyers meet client expectations of professionalism and trustworthiness. A well-appointed cabin communicates competence and attention to detail.
8. Enhancing Brand Identity: Law firms can use décor to enhance their brand identity. Colors, logos, and design elements that are consistent with the firm's branding can be integrated into the cabin design.
9. Encouraging Creativity: Artwork and décor can inspire creativity and innovative thinking. Lawyers may draw inspiration from their surroundings, leading to fresh perspectives on legal matters.
10. Stress Reduction: Incorporating elements of nature, such as artwork featuring natural landscapes or décor with plant motifs, can promote stress reduction and well-being. Nature-themed décor brings a sense of tranquility to the cabin.
11. Legal References: Artwork and décor can include subtle legal references, such as quotes from legal scholars or historical legal documents. These references can reinforce the lawyer's connection to the legal tradition.
12. Privacy and Confidentiality: Artwork and décor choices should also respect the need for privacy and confidentiality. Avoiding overly revealing décor and maintaining soundproofing are essential considerations.
In conclusion, artwork and décor in lawyer cabin design serve a multitude of purposes, from setting the tone and reflecting firm values to enhancing comfort and creating focal points. These elements contribute to a professional, functional, and welcoming environment that supports lawyers in their daily work and interactions with clients. By carefully curating artwork and décor, lawyers can create cabins that align with their professional image and provide a conducive atmosphere for legal excellence. One can achieve these by getting in touch with the renowned design and build firm such as Flipspaces, who can help you with the same.

Norfolk Reads - The Shrieking Pit
by Arthur J Rees
A vintage crime novel in the Dorothy L Sayers mould (but without the wit). Famous private detective Grant Colwyn meets James Ronald - a young man behaving oddly in a Norfolk hotel dining room. Soon, Ronald is arrested for murder, and Colwyn is the only person involved in the investigation who has any doubts about his guilt. As his lawyers prepare of defence of insanity, Colwyn looks for evidence that Ronald did not commit the crime of which he stands accused.
This is very atmospheric, with lots of local scenery - although most of the place-names seem to be borrowed from outside Norfolk or fictitious.
... a footpath protected by a hand rail had been made along the edge of the cliff for the benefit of jaded London visitors who wanted to get the best value for their money in the bracing Norfolk air. At the present moment that air, shrieking across the North Sea with almost hurricane force, was too bracing for weak nerves on the exposed path, and it was real hard work to force a way, even with the help of the handrail, against the wind, to say nothing of the spray which was flung up in clouds from the thundering masses of yellow waves dashing at the foot of the cliffs below ...
The marshes stretched from the road to the sea, nearly a mile away. Man had almost given up the task of attempting to wrest a living from this inhospitable region. The boat channels which threaded the ooze were choked with weed and covered with green slime from long disuse, the little stone quays were thick with moss, the rotting planks of a broken fishing boat were foul with the encrustations of long years, the stone cottages by the roadside seemed deserted. Here and there the marshes had encroached upon the far side of the road, creeping half a mile or more farther inland, destroying the wholesome earth like rust corroding steel, and stretching slimy tentacles towards the farmlands on the rise ...
The Golden Anchor inn must have been built in the days of Sir Cloudesley Shovel, for nothing remained of the maritime prosperity which had originally bestowed the name upon the building. It was of rough stone, coloured a dirty white, with two queer circular windows high up in the wall on one side, the other side resting on a little, round-shouldered hill. It was built facing away from the sea like the beach-stone cottages, from which it was separated by a patch of common. From the rear of the inn the marshes stretched in unbroken monotony to the line of leaping white sea dashing sullenly against the breakwater wall, and ran for miles north and south in a desolate uniformity, still and grey as the sky above, devoid of life except for a few migrant birds feeding in the salt creeks or winging their way seaward in strong, silent flight. The rays of the afternoon sun, momentarily piercing the thick clouds, fell on the white wall and round glazed windows of the inn, giving it a sinister resemblance to a dead face.
There's some good attempts at the local dialect (which brought back memories of the hanky-supplying neighbour in The Ink Black Heart - so looking forward to the locals in The Running Grave when it appears):
"Yow be lookin' to see how t'owd ma'aster was hulled dune th' pit?" he asked.
"I was wondering how far the pit ran straight down," replied Colwyn. "It seems to take a slight slope a little way down. Does it?"
"I doan't know narthin' about th' pit, and I doan't want to," replied Mr. Duney, backing away with a slightly pale face. "Doan't yow meddle wi' un, ma'aster. It's a quare place, thissun."
"Why, what's the matter with it?"
"Did you never hear that th' pit's haunted? Like enough nobody'd tell yow. Folk hereabowts aren't owerfond of talkin' of th' White Lady of th' Shrieking Pit, for fear it should bring un bad luck."
"I've been hearing a little about her to-day. Is she any relation of Black Shuck, the ghost dog you were telling me about?"
"It's no larfin' matter, ma'aster. You moind the day me and Billy Backlog come and towld yow about us seein' that chap on th' edge of yon wood that night? Well, just befower we seed un we heerd th' rummiest kind of noise—summat atween a moan and a shriek, comin' from this 'ere pit. I reckon, from what's happened to that chap Ronald since, that it wor the White Lady of th' Pit we heered. It's lucky for us we didn't see un."
And there's a mad old woman locked away, a hanging judge and a love triangle. Really, I don't know what more you want.

Commercial Fishing Boats In Washington
As one of the oldest maritime professions in the world, fishermen are constantly at risk for injury and accident due to the hazardous environments they frequently find themselves working in. Rough seas, improperly maintained equipment, the carelessness of the shipowner or their coworkers – fishermen face a lot of dangers out on the high seas, and injuries are common. If you work on a commercial fishing vessel within the United States, or on a vessel that flies the American flag, you’re covered by maritime law in the event of an injury. These laws, commonly referred to as the Jones Act, cover workers in the event that their injury is found to be caused by carelessness on the boat owner’s fault, whether through negligence, lack of proper safety equipment, or any other cause that demonstrates a lack of responsibility on the owner’s part. These laws have helped compensate and protect fishermen just like you for nearly a hundred years, and they can be your greatest asset in the event of injury on the job. Many times after one of their employees is injured, ship owners will try to find ways to settle out of court for an amount far less than what the employee is truly entitled to because of their injury. Before you talk to your employer at all about the incident, you need to contact an experienced maritime injury lawyer like O’Bryan Baun Karamanian. We’ve got the skills, experience, and attitude needed to stand up to the big shipping companies and their hotshot lawyers, and with our focus on maritime law (as opposed to more general injury law like so many other law firms) we know exactly what to do to fight for your rights in court. Injured on the job while working in the maritime industry
Workers’ Compensation?
If you have been injured on the job while working in the maritime industry, a tactic of some employers is to offer worker’s compensation, a form of regular payments made to an injured worker, to prevent a legal claim or any kind of court action for the injury.
However, crewmembers are covered by the Jones Act, to the exclusion of worker’s comp, which can prove to be more advantageous to the worker in many situations. The laws of the Jones Act preempt the no-fault Worker’s Compensation Act of any state, and can provide a greater right of recovery than the state’s compensation plan on its own. This allows for a greater rate of coverage than you would get from standard worker’s compensation, and can prove more helpful to you and your family after suffering an injury during maritime employment.
Jones Act and Workers’ Compensation FAQs
Is There a Difference Between Compensation Under the Jones Act & Standard Worker’s Comp?
The differences may not seem obvious at first, but the distinctions between compensation under the Jones Act and standard worker’s compensation can be crucial. Payments received under worker’s compensation are often far less than potential recoveries under the terms of the Jones Act. As opposed to worker’s comp, which can be filed by the employer, Jones Act claims must be filed by the individual Maritime Attorney worker.
By working with an offshore injury lawyer, you may be able to get more compensation via the Jones Act than what your employer is likely to offer through worker’s compensation, as well as greater flexibility and control by filing the claim yourself.
What Should I Do If I Already Receive Worker’s Compensation?
Even if you’ve already agreed to and are currently receiving worker’s compensation, you may still be protected by the Jones Act if you act in time. States such as Alaska and New York have passed resolutions in their state or federal courts that would help to replace worker’s compensation with compensation under the Jones Act for eligible workers, and you may still be able to receive compensation via the Jones Act even if you already receive worker’s comp in these states after suffering a Maritime Injury Lawyers.
What Should I Do If I Am Offered Worker’s Compensation After I Am Injured?
Any maritime worker, from fishing boats to oil rigs and everything in between, should contact a Jones Act lawyer right away if they have been offered worker’s compensation. The Jones Act can provide a far greater rate of compensation than worker’s compensation will, and is a much better option for any worker seeking compensation and justice under the Jones Act.
If you need a Maritime Injury Lawyer Texas for any kind of representation, O’Bryan Law will fight for you. Our combined decades of maritime law experience has led us to handle – and win – hundreds of Jones Act claims, and we’ll fight for your rights no matter where you are. Get your free case consultation today and let us defend your claim in court.

HONOLULU — A U.S. defense contractor and his wife who lived for decades under the identities of two dead Texas children have been charged with identity theft and conspiring against the government, according to federal court records unsealed in Honolulu.
Walter Glenn Primrose and Gwynn Darle Morrison, both in their 60s, who allegedly lived for decades under the names Bobby Edward Fort and Julie Lyn Montague, respectively, were arrested Friday in Kapolei on the island of Oahu.
Prosecutors are seeking to have the couple held without bail, which could indicate the case is about more than fraudulently obtaining drivers’ licenses, passports and Defense Department credentials.
Those documents helped Primrose get secret security clearance with the U.S. Coast Guard and as a defense contractor and old photos show the couple wearing uniforms of the KGB, the former Russian spy agency, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Muehleck said in court papers. Faded Polaroids of each in uniform were included in the motion to have them held.
A “close associate” said Morrison lived in Romania while it was a Soviet bloc country, Muehleck said.
Morrison's attorney said her client never lived in Romania and that she and Primrose tried the same jacket on as a joke and posed for photos in it. Even if the couple used new identities, attorney Megan Kau told The Associated Press, they have lived law-abiding lives for three decades.
“She wants everyone to know she’s not a spy,” Kau said. “This has all been blown way out of proportion. It’s government overreaching.”
Prosecutors said there is a high risk the couple would flee if freed. They also suggested that Primrose, who was an avionics electrical technician in the Coast Guard, was highly skilled to communicate secretly if released.
The couple is also believed to have other aliases, Muehleck said.
A lawyer for Primrose declined comment. A bail hearing was scheduled for Thursday in U.S. District Court.
The secret clearance Primrose had provides access to information that is “enormously valuable to our enemies,” said Kevin O’Grady, a Honolulu defense attorney not involved in the case.
The Coast Guard works closely with the Army and Navy, helps with counterintelligence and serves as the country’s maritime border patrol, said O’Grady, an Army reservist and lieutenant colonel judge advocate.
“The Coast Guard has a unique perspective on our vulnerabilities,” he said, including how to infiltrate the country through water ports. Hawaii, a major military center, “is a prime target for a lot of espionage and such,” he said.
For one family whose deceased child's name was stolen, the news Wednesday came as a shock.
John Montague, who lost his daughter Julie in 1968 at 3 weeks of age, was stunned to learn someone had been living under her name for so long.
“I still can’t believe it happened,” Montague, 91, told AP. "The odds are like one-in-a-trillion that they found her and used her name. People stoop to do anything nowadays. Let kids rest in peace.”
Primrose and Morrison were born in 1955 and they attended high school together in Port Lavaca, Texas, and then went to Stephen F. Austin University, according to court records. They married in 1980.
There is no indication in court papers why the couple in 1987 assumed the identities of deceased children who would have been more than a decade younger than them. But an affidavit filed by Special Agent Dennis Thomas of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service noted that the couple lost their home in Nacogdoches, Texas, to foreclosure that year.
They remarried under their assumed names in 1988, Thomas said.
Court records don't provide any information about what happened from the time they assumed their new identities until 1994, when Primrose, then about 39, enlisted in the Coast Guard as Fort, who would have been about 27.
If there was an obvious age discrepancy between what Primrose looked like and the birth certificate he presented, “that’s an abject failure,” O’Grady said.
“That’s something if they can figure it out now, they should have caught it then,” he said.
Montague said that “somebody's not doing their jobs.”
Primrose and Morrison applied for and received multiple passports under their assumed names, according to court records. But in 1999 Primrose also applied for and was issued a passport under his legal name while also holding a passport in Fort's name.
Primrose was in the service until 2016, when he began work for an unnamed defense contractor at the U.S. Coast Guard Air station at Barbers Point.
“While he held that secret clearance with the U.S. Coast Guard, defendant Primrose was required to report any foreign travel," prosecutors wrote. “Investigation has revealed that defendant Primrose did not report several trips to Canada while he did report other foreign travel.”
The couple lived in a Honolulu suburb in a modest two-bedroom bungalow beneath palm trees. They owned a neighboring house they rented to military personnel, said Mai Ly Schara, who lived next door.
She knew them as Bob and Lynn, with Morrison apparently Julie Lyn Montague's middle name.
Primrose did yard work for Schara for $50 a month, she said. Morrison took in, fed and spayed and neutered cats. She also had several rabbits and dedicated a room to the pets.
“They kept to themselves, but they were friendly,” Schara said. “They just kind of were, like, a little nerdy.”
Schara wasn’t sure what Primrose did for a living, but thought it was military related. Morrison once worked as a parking attendant at a Waikiki hotel but had been tutoring neighborhood children.
The FBI created a scene in the quiet neighborhood when they searched the house and took photos.
“It was just shocking, like, oh my gosh,” Schara said. “It was pretty crazy.”
The State Department declined to comment on the arrests.
The couple is charged with conspiracy to commit an offense against the U.S., false statement in passport application and aggravated identity theft.
Fort, who lived fewer than three months, died in October 1967 at the same hospital where Julie Montague passed away about three months later in January 1968. They are buried 14 miles (23 kilometers) apart.
When Tonda Ferguson learned from her father that Morrison had used her late sister's birth certificate to create an alias, she thought of her mother, who died in 2003, and how many years had gone by.
“For all the mothers who are living and have to know this happened to their babies, I can’t even begin to imagine," Ferguson said. "I’m glad my mama’s with the Lord. This would be so traumatic for her.”
Ferguson was in eighth grade when her sister died. She never got to see her little sister or hold her. She was buried in Burnet, Texas, the small town where they lived at the time outside of Austin.
“She came from a place of love, deep love,” Ferguson said. “For someone to turn around to steal her identity for evil, it’s tough. It’s hurtful. ... I hope they rot.”
