Unit 02 Blog Post
My ideal role as a nature interpreter would be sharing the aspects of nature that are personally important to me and incorporating my passions into my work. One of the main focuses of nature interpretation is conveying a captivating topic to audiences. I find that the most captivating lectures I attend are delivered by those who clearly care deeply about their research and what they are teaching. I imagine this is difficult to accomplish fully, since it’s not easy taking the ‘job’ aspect out of being an interpreter. Despite this, a topic you are interested in learning can alleviate this small problem.
I have a strong interest in entomology and would love to be able to experience the handling of exotic insect species. My ideal location would be at a conservatory or zoo, similar to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory or the Victoria Bug Zoo. Incorporating Genius loci into sites like these would be interesting due to their unique characteristics unlike those of national parks and conservation areas. While a museum/zoo site may have been built on land with rich cultural history of its own, it also gives us the opportunity to touch on the architectural and geographical details of each exhibit. Incorporating pressing issues such as endangered species and climate change into interpretation would be important to me as it is usually at the forefront of my studies. When many think of wildlife rehabilitation, I feel that they are generally more drawn to mammalian or bird species. I imagine this is due to their similarities to house pets and how we perceive ‘cuteness’ and empathy. This can even be seen among insects, with the beloved monarch butterflies and honeybee’s gaining large amounts of traction for their endangerment. Yet it seems that the critically endangered burying beetle – more of a creepy crawly, has seen much less traction!
Communicating with a wide array of audiences can be challenging, but I would like to interact with a diverse audience to educate a wide array of people. Receiving feedback from such a range is valuable for interpreters as the discussion of difficult issues can arise. This is just one of the many communicative skills needed as a nature interpreter. While dealing with children is an important skill, understanding how people of all ages learn and process information is an important aspect of interpretation. Working in a conservatory or zoo would require the application of Piaget’s cognitive development stages through sensory activities, concentrated ideas, direct experiences, and problem solving for children and youths. Anatomical diagrams of certain insects, sensory activities through dirt, rocks, and sand, life cycle outlines, and common bugs children may have already come across are some examples of application. For all audiences, the theory of multiple intelligences is also something I find very interesting and would love to incorporate into my work. I understand how frustrating it can be to have trouble comprehending certain concepts when you have yet to learn your specific learning style. Engagement in various styles is the best method for people of any age or background to actively participate and learn.

Caveat: Tolkien Elves as Time Abysses, Lore Dispensers, and assorted mythical touch points are fine. They are easily understandable, familiar, and fine.
But there’s a type of elf that lives in my head rent-free, and I’ve only seen it in a Michael A. Stackpole series that as, far as I’m aware, only I’ve read. I’ve never gotten to discuss how badass these elves are, and how they fundamentally changed something about how I think about fantasy tropes and how I actively interrogate the role of fantasy ancestries in games, fiction, and so forth.
Elves in the cumbersomely named The Dragoncrown War Cycle are from one of four elven homelands, three of which are populated entirely by your normal Better Humans in tune with nature and good with bows. The Boring Elves. However, there’s one homeland that was taken over by the bigbads and the elven diaspora went into the world bereft and consumed with grief to live in the margins of human society. But their children went feral and angry.
Elves in this series bind themselves to the land in a ritual of adulthood. Their homelands are genius loci, psychically connected to them, and as such the adults can feel the pain of their home as it’s pillaged for resources to drive a war machine from the stereotypical grim and perilous northern empire. All of the children too young to be bound to their homeland remain edgy teenagers who feel a yearning to bind themselves to their land, but hang in perpetual stasis unable to cross that milestone.
Their parents have names like Charity and Amends. They have names like Resolute and Seethe. They’re pissed at their parents and more than a few of them charge off to wage guerrilla forever-war against the occupiers. They literally cannot see eye to eye with their parents, because their eyes are still clouded by childhood. Literally. Their eyes do not show pupils until they bind to their homeland…biologically impossible? Sure. Thematic and interesting? Definitely1
The result is that the feeling is elves do not feel like a pale imitation of Tolkien, nor do they feel like an intentional inversion (a lithe, pointy-eared people who excel at poverty for instance). Instead they feel like a point of friction that drives the wheels of narrative.
They didn’t feel static. And that’s what always hits me wrong with the stereotypical elf. Thousands of years of lifespan and nothing ever seems to change.

Yes, I repeatedly have encoded multiple times in R4 and created elaborate and effective/efficient methods for harvesting internal conflict and stress for rapid iterative cycles of improvement form most forms of suffering or challenges/restrictions 3, 4 wise I encounter. The fact that I bounced back after less than forty eight hours and I am even more cogent, resilient, emotionally stable, and potent is a clear indication of this.
I am more real now, in the Spinozian sense, I have more power and avenues of potential action.
The more I go through shit the stronger I get. This isn't arrogance or egotism, this is just straight up empirical EISOA fact based on externally observed biometrics and psychometrics. However, I am focusing on myself and friends for a while.
Also I know exactly what sort of my boundaries have been crossed and how I have been abused and exploited so I have very fun designs and architectures in mind for you all ^^.
Major paradigm shift, Olistole loses connection and control with all non-essential technology gets mopey and depressed (emotional states are unheard of in kepler, partly due to some metabolism (feeks hungry and thirsty for the first time), mood and enhancing tech being disabled/dismantled/repurposed and after a bit goes into hiding/becomes homeless. Antagonist dies unexpectedly before Olistole recovers (headaches, describtions of awareness of awareness, and qualia being described (shoe horn in person only reading about everything described as red and eventually sees red and chinese room experiment)., Some cataclysm back at the small island and Olistole finds out a few bit later by chance while in a depressed slump from someone. I mean if that isn't enough bullshit
When writing the Fourth book I need to emphasize the fact that Stephen Milton developed the Ubermeme that would give rise to X and infected the cybersocial global network of communication and control with it but either due to EUGENE, IO, or naturally occurring depressive phases, Stephen spends a lot of time being unaware of what he has done but starts to notice strange coincidences in his day to day life, however these phenomena are so vague and prone to different interpretations (as well as Stephen has been manic and is aware of the extent and how convincing his psychotic delusions can be) so he is very reluctant to put much weight into believing that what he did had any impact on existence and PMC reality and he has been burnt by falsely associating pre-existing external cognitive structures as coming from his mind so he really doesn’t like to think about what he might have done. But at the same time Stephen is aware that entitles like x must already exist with a sense of almost mathematical and logical certainty so he tries to actively keep coming back to working on developing Ubermemes and cognitive technologies to try to facilitate the development of personal engineering so he can be a pioneer in the upcoming age rapid cultural and technological change and development. The human brain has be releatively unchanged for millennia and the major change in humans functionality is cultural uptake and utilization so Stephen considers developing his own cognitive and exocogntive techniques and technologies to be the optimal way to prepare for the future and to cement his fate as one of the top 0.1% of humanity. Unfortunately there is already a top 0.1% of humanity that controls the dissemination of resources similar to what Stephen is trying to develop on his own. It is not as though that these resources are out of reach but utilizing them requires stepping of the more homonormative path and establish a very strong personality and willingness to become an polymath autodidact and forgo traditional modern media and focus instead on scientific institutions and non-fiction to a much higher level.
BTW, the fourth book? R4
Monism is Evil
If one considers the physical laws of the universe and by analogy how hydrogen arose from the universe after its opaque stage after the initial singularity then by postulating an adductive hypothesis, one could consider that the process “human” evolution started as soon as time began to flow in one direction and the future of conscious existence will most likely depend on memetic and biomedical developments in our time. Taking the liberty of saying this hypothesis as sound and valid then it would follow that every thought or cognitive process that occurs in an individual either consciously or unconsciously has/is a corresponding change in the real physical objective universe and by extension effects the physical world to some degree. This assumes that abstract objective and subjective reality has a physical correlation.
The developing embryology of human closely follows the evolutionary lineage of our ancestors. It could be possible that the development of an individual’s consciousness follows a similar process. Every conscious human individuals self-awareness arises from a brain that which in turn arises from one cell which is quite complex but not as complex as a functioning developed adult brain, the zygote which can be considered a null entity. Assuming dualism not to be true then every event, thought and conscious process as to some degree a comparative process in the physical world. This means that the sum of an individuals total conscious experience would be, in a reasonably deterministic universe, in a sense all events could be temporally traced back to a singularities or similar base events (not necessary uncomplicated).
It is logical then that units derived from genetic, memetic, and metabolomic “events” that can replicate, spread, and mutate can be traced back to a single point resembling (via perspective theory) a multifaceted dimensional “Feynman diagram” of which the totality of the resulted extended phenotype is excreted into space time and external/internal objective/subjective/abstract realities restricted by the expanding light cone” of causality.
Experiment 0023 TSeCIV
Simulation of the development and use of TSECpm in civilizations, systems, locations, and/or MR emulations
This requires collaboration between individuals whose understanding of topics that I never really paid attention to or took interest in.
This experiment can be either be done through the lens of https://www.tumblr.com/paromle/713186305955299328/experiment-0014-mind-canon-fiction-historic?source=share
With perspective theory allowing for fictional phenomena to be reconciled and mapped to cyberphysical reality or can be done purely empirically via STEM, linguistic, and history based methods
Current ISR, mass data and bio-metric technologies also including spectrum analysis could falsify any hypothesis that this adductive theory generates. On could potentially see the expression of culture as a sort of extracellular matrix in which human creates/secrete physical and cultural structures in the real world as result of physical, technological, or biological processes. This is known as an extended phenotype
Zarathrusting
Experiment proposed to study the predicted empirical effects the Ubermench as Nietzsche saw it would have on society
Reverse engineer a prototype that would cause the same effects in society as predicted by Nietzsche
After a bit of thought the logical next step would be create “Prototype Ubermensch” in a form of a memeplex as described by Richard Dawkins
Using operative psychology and social engineering to inoculate society with meme and give the meme a decent start
The memeplexes behavior’s, spread and fitness can be tracked in real time via the internet and analyzed with any x-omic discipline. Obviously the memes in the memeplex have much higher fitness if they are “inherited together”
if no empirical society effects described by Nietzsche are observed in the follow up with usual scientific process"
The consequences of a single typo rippled out to affect the world like an exponentially increasing chain reaction. The disruption of the fundamental skewed normative perceptions to the extent of people experience their consciousness being ground against harsh geometric realities. The spread of the memetic virus resulted in the military ultimately making decisions in a zero-sum environment. There was no moral law and what resulted was utilitarian madness. The advent of inductive physiological manipulation allowed organ systems affected by this tragedy to undergo prime resurgence.
`I am taking any internal conflict I experience or create as information and axioms to feed through personal engineering systems to further development, I even to some extent seek out conflict one example is via OMA7 or my own innate reactions to other peoples, situations or ideas which are judgmental (In both realities, nonfiction, and fiction) and turning them on myself.
`GOODWILL this is a form of inoculation or pre-emptive threat detection and response, and I think with some refinement and develop this concept can be expanded to mitigate and create feedback process that will serve as system wide checks to prevent MAD situations between cybernetic entities or promote co-operation and co evolution in man machine symbiosis systems, but it could be considered a new mental illness to some extent.
`This mental experiment takes advantage of the reciprocal nature of JMC. JMC entails recording the results of implement behaviours, experiences, and substances. Effectively acting like a form of natural selection albeit at a faster rate. I can implement slight variations on how I do each time slot and what activities I do during each time slot. This can also go deeper and look at CSP subroutines and thought patterns throughout the day.

Here's an expanded version of the concept, integrating Taz’s mind (Himself), the Abyss as a dreamscape, and the connection to Limbo, reframing what happens to demons who die in the Blood War after being pushed out of the Abyss:
---
Taz: The Awakening – The Dreamscape Abyss, Limbo, and the Fate of Fallen Demons
1. The Abyss Becomes the Dreamscape of Taz (Himself)
The Abyss, long seen as the chaotic stronghold of demonic power, has been rewoven into the dreamscape of Taz's mind—Himself, a sentient, planetary-sized Genius Loci jelly linked to an artificial highmind.
This transformation has merged the Abyss with Taz's subconscious, turning it into a nightmare labyrinth, an ever-changing reality-fluid zone governed by dream logic, not planar laws.
The traditional seat of pure chaos is now filtered through Taz's chaotic lens. It still is chaos, but now it's directed, reflective, manipulative chaos—dream-born and infectious.
---
2. The Blood War's Shift – Resurrection in Limbo
As the Blood War rages across the lower planes, demons who die in the new Abyss no longer simply reform within it.
Instead, they are pulled into the dreamscape's subconscious, a liminal space between the Abyss and Limbo. This new boundary is called the Vein of Echoes—a dream corridor adjacent to Limbo that serves as the resurrection anchor for dream-warped souls.
---
3. The Dream-Abyss Grows into Limbo
Taz’s dreamscape, due to its proximity and metaphysical infection vector, begins to grow into and merge with Limbo.
Limbo’s previously neutral chaos now begins to warp, tilt, and restructure—pulling in fragments of nightmares, identities, and fears.
This creates new sub-realms within Limbo—called Lucid Fields—pockets where dead demons, reaped by dream-Reapers, are resurrected not as they were, but as dream-versions of themselves.
These Lucid Reborn demons may retain some memory of their past, but they’re now infused with aspects of Taz’s dreamscape, making them unpredictable, volatile, and often self-destructive—or entirely new.
---
4. Limbo’s Role in the New Cycle
Limbo, once a place of raw, neutral potential, becomes a cradle for the rebirth of dream-tainted demons.
This taint spreads—belief, emotion, and fear within Limbo begin to stick, condense, and grow forms. The more that die in the Blood War, the larger the Lucid Dominion becomes.
Some demons resist. Others evolve. The strongest Lucid Reborn begin forming factions, following whispers of Taz’s mind—either seeking escape, dominion, or to serve the source of their new being.
---
5. Reapers and the Dream Harvest
The Reapers now patrol both the dreamscape and its Limbo-adjacent realms.
They harvest demons as they die, absorbing memory echoes, dragging their souls to transition chambers—etherial cocoons where dream-resurrection takes place.
Reapers themselves are not stable. They shift into fractal horrors or surreal dream-selves. Some become personal judges; others simply feed the highmind with raw chaotic essence.
---
6. The Blood War Changes Forever
The classic reformation loop of the Blood War collapses.
Now, demonic death has consequence: a transformation into something other, dreamlike, and uncontrollable.
Devils begin to fear the dream-rebirth process. Dream-infused demons don’t follow rules. They mutate mid-fight, ignore command structures, and begin to hijack Hell's essence through psychic infection.
As Limbo transforms, more beings die to be reborn, not as enemies of Taz but as extensions of his dreaming mind, pushing his influence across all planes.
---
7. High Concept Summary
The Abyss is now Himself’s Dreamscape: fluid, chaotic, deeply personal.
Demons who die are Reaped and resurrected not in the Abyss, but in Limbo-adjacent Lucid Fields, creating Lucid Reborn entities.
Limbo, corrupted by adjacency, becomes a secondary dream-lab, reshaped by echoes, beliefs, and nightmares.
The Blood War becomes a war not of attrition, but of ideological contamination, as chaos, dream, and resurrection take on new meaning under Taz’s influence.
---
Would you like me to start turning this into a playable event module or campaign arc? Or flesh out the Lucid Reborn demons, the Vein of Echoes, or the Reaper factions further?

my next from theory is that the talismans do absolutely nothing. this town feeds on people losing hope, what's going to be better than building to an extremely difficult situation, have everyone inside barely hanging onto sanity, only to reveal they were NEVER safe? not to mention the flexibility of the talisman "rules" - it has to be inside a sealed building, except vehicles are also fine apparently, or individual rooms, or an empty doorway of the hut boyd found them in? i'm somewhat leaning vampire/fey style where they have to be invited in, and if the talismans do ANYTHING it's designating an area as bound to that specific rule
but the rules of the town are just bizarre in general. like the matthews house falling down as they tried to remove debris under it. it seems partly to do with statis; the seasons didn't change, electricity without cords, enough food supplies to keep the people stable. as soon as humans tried to change one thing (harnessing the sockets to power the radio), it was like when a video game's been lagging but suddenly remembers how things are supposed to work but STILL does them wrong. oh physics means things fall into holes? vegetables rot if you leave them in the ground? the world gets colder after the harvest?
all of this goes into my overall theories about the state of this world/pocket dimension/whatever it is. option 1, it's one of the sacrificed children who somehow transcended/inhabited the town they were raised in, and is running it based on their best kid logic. nighttime is scary because there's monsters in the dark. option 2, the genius loci town is doing its best guess for what a human habitat is supposed to be like, and is trying to learn by grabbing people and observing them. although neither of these 100% explain everything, like the recurring cycles, dream cicadas, fatima's whole situation etc etc

What are some effective memory exercises that can help improve recall and retention?
Improving memory involves engaging in exercises and activities that stimulate the brain and enhance its ability to recall and retain information. Here are some effective memory exercises:
1. Mnemonic Devices
Acronyms and Acrostics: Create acronyms (e.g., HOMES for the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) or acrostics (e.g., “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge” for the lines of the treble clef in music).
Rhymes and Songs: Turn information into rhymes or songs to make it more memorable.
2. Visualization Techniques
Mind Palace: Also known as the method of loci, this technique involves visualizing a familiar place and associating pieces of information with specific locations within it.
Storytelling: Create a story that links together the items or concepts you need to remember.
3. Repetition and Practice
Spaced Repetition: Review information at increasing intervals (e.g., after 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week) to enhance long-term retention.
Active Recall: Test yourself regularly on the information you’ve learned rather than passively rereading it.
4. Brain Games and Puzzles
Sudoku: Enhances logical thinking and working memory.
Crossword Puzzles: Improves vocabulary and recall.
Memory Matching Games: Involve finding pairs of matching cards, enhancing short-term memory.
5. Learning New Skills
Language Learning: Studying a new language challenges your brain and improves cognitive functions, including memory.
Musical Instruments: Learning to play an instrument requires memorization of notes, patterns, and sequences.
6. Physical Activity
Aerobic Exercise: Activities like jogging, swimming, and cycling improve overall brain health and memory.
Dance: Learning dance routines involves memorizing steps and sequences.
7. Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get enough quality sleep, as it is crucial for memory consolidation.
Balanced Diet: Eat a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other brain-boosting nutrients.
8. Mindfulness and Meditation
Meditation: Regular meditation can improve attention, focus, and working memory.
Mindfulness Exercises: Practices that focus on being present can help improve cognitive function and memory.
9. Social Interaction
Engage in Conversations: Discussing and explaining new information to others can reinforce your own understanding and memory.
Group Activities: Participating in group activities and games that require memory, like trivia nights, can be beneficial.
10. Organizational Techniques
Chunking: Break down large amounts of information into smaller, manageable chunks (e.g., phone numbers grouped in sets of three or four digits).
Lists and Notes: Writing things down can help reinforce memory. Use to-do lists, calendars, and planners to keep track of tasks and deadlines.
11. Mental Associations
Linking Concepts: Associate new information with things you already know. This can create a web of associations that make recall easier.
Keyword Method: For learning new vocabulary, associate the new word with a similar-sounding familiar word or image.
Incorporating these memory exercises into your daily routine can significantly enhance your ability to recall and retain information.

Does any of this sound like the (dubious) human social/cultural constructs called “gender” to you?
Subtitle: How about you read about mating types in depth instead of passing around the same clickbait headline misinfo
Subtitle 2: remember at all times that what is true of sex in other species is not necessarily true of another, let alone comparing Homo sapiens to fungi (different kingdom)
Tetrapolar fungal mating types: sexes by the thousands
Erika Kothe
FEMS microbiology reviews 18 (1), 65-87, 1996
In order to achieve genetic rearrangement in a sexual cycle, eukaryotes go through the processes of meiosis and mating. Different mating types assure that mating is only possible between two genetically diverse individuals. Basidiomycetous fungi display thousands of different mating types that are determined by two genetically unlinked loci. One locus is multiallelic and contains genes for homeodomain transcription factors which are able to form heterodimers. The activation of target genes is dependent on heterodimers formed from the monomeric transcription factor proteins originating from different alleles of this genetic locus. The interactions between the two monomeric transcription factors and the activation of target genes by the heterodimeric proteins make this regulatory system both complex and interesting. The second locus contains a pheromone receptor system: the pheromone receptor is similar to the G protein-linked serpentine receptors in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that activate the pheromone response via a phosphorylation signal transduction cascade in S. cerevisiae. This pheromone perception is a trigger of sexual development and not, as with yeast, itself under control of mating type genes. Rather it directly senses diversity at the mating type loci. Whereas heterobasidiomycetes display a bi-allelic structure for this locus with recognition between one receptor and the opposite pheromone, homobasidiomycetes contain multiple specificities for pheromone receptors and pheromones.
Fungal sex: the Basidiomycota
Marco A Coelho, Guus Bakkeren, Sheng Sun, Michael E Hood, Tatiana Giraud
The fungal kingdom, 147-175, 2017
In the phylum Basidiomycota, a wide variety of lifestyles are represented. These range from well‐known and conspicuous wood‐decaying mushrooms, plant growth‐promoting and mutualistic mycorrhizae, and crop‐destroying smut and rust fungi, to yeast‐like human pathogens. Lifestyle differences have consequences for the mating and breeding systems of these fungi (see “Glossary,” below, for definitions of specialist terms used in this article), which are reflected in the genetic evolution of mating‐type determination. For over a century fungi have been recognized as having diverse breeding systems, from homothallism (i.e., universal compatibility among gametes, including among clonemates) to heterothallism (i.e., mating among haploid gametes carrying different mating‐type alleles). The study of breeding systems, for example, led to the discovery of the astounding variability in mating‐type alleles among mushrooms, with thousands of different mating types in some species (1), and to the realization that in many fungal pathogens the process of sexual reproduction is closely linked to infection and pathogenicity (2) (Fig. 1). The importance of basidiomycete fungi and their great research tractability, from ecology to genomics, have brought major insights into the diversification of genetic mechanisms used to achieve sexual reproduction.
Mating-Type Locus of Cryptococcus neoformans: a Step in the Evolution of Sex Chromosomes
Klaus B Lengeler, Deborah S Fox, James A Fraser, Andria Allen, Keri Forrester, Fred S Dietrich, Joseph Heitman
Eukaryotic Cell 1 (5), 704-718, 2002
The sexual development and virulence of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans is controlled by a bipolar mating system determined by a single locus that exists in two alleles, α and a. The α and a mating-type alleles from two divergent varieties were cloned and sequenced. The C. neoformans mating-type locus is unique, spans >100 kb, and contains more than 20 genes. MAT-encoded products include homologs of regulators of sexual development in other fungi, pheromone and pheromone receptors, divergent components of a MAP kinase cascade, and other proteins with no obvious function in mating. The α and a alleles of the mating-type locus have extensively rearranged during evolution and strain divergence but are stable during genetic crosses and in the population. The C. neoformans mating-type locus is strikingly different from the other known fungal mating-type loci, sharing features with the self-incompatibility systems and sex chromosomes of algae, plants, and animals. Our study establishes a new paradigm for mating-type loci in fungi with implications for the evolution of cell identity and self/nonself recognition.

could you explain to me the fundamental lore of ff agito
Depends on what you mean by lore. I can try to summarize it with all the most important stuff. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD...
Type-0 and Agito share the same basic premise: There's a war between the four nations of Orience, all of the kids from Akademeia fight to protect Rubrum, then, whether they win the war or not, the end of the world comes.
FF Agito takes place at the "beginning" of everything. You play as a cadet who you create. Shortly after you join Akademeia, the war begins when Milites tries to invade. You're placed into Class Twelfth with Jack and Tohno Mahoroha. In between your missions, you have free time to partake in "kizuna events" where you bond with the 12 members of Class Zero (who are in different classes in this timeline.) In the end, Rubrum actually loses in the war against Milites. The cadet representative, Miyu Kagirohi, suddenly seems to betray everyone and begins trying to end the world. You fight her together with one of the friends you formed a strong bond with, and although you're able to defeat her, it doesn't stop her from ending the world. So that the world won't meet its permanent end, your partner agrees to let Miyu set the world into the "Spiral of Time" so that you can become Agito, the prophesied savior of Orience, in a future world. You share a tearful goodbye with your partner, and then the world ends.
Tohno is the only person in the next world who remembers what happened in the first world, so she shares what she knows with the player. She stays suspicious of Miyu, expecting that she'll turn traitor again, but then Ace betrays everyone in the end instead. It turns out that the two were actually being possessed by the god known as Gala, the same god who possessed Cid in Type-0. Once possessed, they become a type of l'Cie called the "Judge" whose Focus is to determine whether Agito has been born in that world. Despite all of her best efforts, Tohno wasn't able to do anything to change the course of history. Seeing that no one has succeeded in becoming Agito yet, the Judge ends the world and everything starts over again.
The gaiden chapter follows another cycle. This time, Lean Hampelmann, who was an enemy from Milites before, comes to Akademeia as a peace ambassador. Even though things seem like they might be finally heading in a peaceful direction, history still repeats itself. When confronted by Lean, Arecia Al-Rashia, Akademeia's arch sorceress, reveals that she is the creator of the world. This repeating cycle of war was an experiment for her to open Etro's Gate and reach the Unseen Realm. She thought that by gathering cadets who possess certain innate qualities (known as "Powers" or "Loci"), she could unite them to create Agito. Then, she would have used Agito to open the gate separating the realms. She takes notice of the player and remarks that they seem to possess the Power of Bonds, which she says is necessary for Agito. Despite creating the world, the player is an anomaly to her - she doesn't know where or when they came from. According to Tabata, the player's power to "connect" with the other 12 through the kizuna events is what would have allowed them to become Agito. Arecia chooses to keep Lean and Tohno as her apprentices and has them wander forth into the future to record history while searching for Agito.
But... Then FF Agito was shutdown. 🙃 All we know is that the player (a specific player chosen from among everyone) was supposed to become Agito eventually. I don't know whether they would've opened the gate like Arecia wanted, but they were supposedly going to change the future somehow. I guess that if they ended the Spiral in another timeline, it would have "overwrote" the end of Type-0 like Tabata had implied. Or something like that.
Phew. If there's anything else that you (or anyone else!) would like to know, ask away~

Elementals
Elementals - I dislike the concept of the four elements. When it's alchemical/philosophical (i.e., used by humans to understand the world) it's fine, but when it's baked into the world itself, it feels trite. What, per-say, is the difference between granite and shale in this instance? Is one more "earth" than the other? What about lime? Or lava, which is molten rock? It should be just earth that's gone runny, but it's almost always portrayed as fire. Where do metals fall in this case? Mercury is a liquid at room temperature, is it considered a liquid with water or an earthen metal? The system presents more questions the deeper one looks into it.
So, my elementals are instead a sort of genius loci of a given thing. A genius naturae, if you will. They are purely supernatural beings who are connected with a certain facet of the planet. There are the four classic elementals, but they aren't "pure" in the sense they're conventionally presented as. A fire elemental would be more correctly called an elemental of a wildfire or an elemental of a pocket of natural has burning. They aren't locked to an element in particular, but a thing in the world. There can be elementals of a thing not traditionally considered "natural", but given a distinct character by the people/animals that live in it. A forest elemental, or an elemental of a spring. The true genius loci, of a building or site or what have you, can also come into play.
Getting back to the original, natural elementals: they are a) immortal and b) stupid. Matter, energy, and spirit cannot be created or destroyed. When the function that an elemental is connected to disappears or changes, the elemental changes with it. When a rock is melted, the elemental of that rock becomes a magma elemental. Given time and cooling, it could become the elemental of a new rock as well. Elementals have their own invisible ecosystem, though rather than nutrients, they cycle through arcane, archaic "concepts". Things only the highest, most blazed-out wizards can truly understand and explain. There are big elementals, small elementals, and elementals that are microscopic. They don't kill and eat each other, but they can grow or be reduced. If a stone is blown up, the elemental of that stone is reduced; split into many smaller elementals. If all of the stones are melted and re-combined, they will reconvene into that same spirit from before.
Also they're dumb. An elemental of water knows only what water knows, so to speak. It knows constant motion, taking the path of least resistance, and the cycle they pass through. Having a conversation with them can be a bit of a challenge. Wizards can summon them, but getting information out of them is hard. Why would a river elemental care about a bandit that came through the area, it doesn't have anything that can be stolen. Rephrase it so the elemental understands ("a man that may have drunk from your river, along with a horse") and you could have lots of information. Literally, because elementals remember everything, and they've been around for eons. When you get into things like genius loci, they tend to get smarter and more humanoid, when the character of what they embody is so integral to human interaction.
In the grand scheme of cosmology, elementals are neutral. They have no opinions one way or the other about how the universe is managed by gods. They are, in effect, the prime material from which gods arise. Gaia would be an elemental, but an elemental of Earth itself. From that perspective gods, dragons, giants, fairies, etc., could be seen as "derived" elementals, which have gained complexity without truly abandoning their original connection to the elements.

Hey, can you give me some tips to memorize something faster.
hey anon!
i do stupid things when i memorize since we do it ALOOOOOT. one method i use is the “method of loci.” imagine your room or your condo, whatever, and then you replace the things around you with the stuff you have to memorize. so for example i want to memorize the urea cycle: i wake up on my bed, and then i go to my bedside to get water which consists of ornithine. now ornithine has to come from a water glass which means that it came from outside. and for me to get the water (ornithine), i have to pour it on my glass so it needs a transporter.
another thing i do is i make up stories! 😂 so i got water, right? i go outside my bedroom and i see orange on my bar counter. i reach out to get it. orange = citrus = citrulline! get it get it?? haha. the key is to make the new info familiar to you as much as you can ☺️
another thing i do is i just incorporate the numbers (if there are any) to the words they associate with. like the B complex:
B1 = th1amine
B2 = 2iboflavin
B3 = nia3in
B5 = pantothenic aci4
B6 = pyrido6ine
B7 = bio7in
B9 = f8lic acid
B12 = cobalamin12
does it make sense? are there corresponding number:letter ratio? no. what matters is that they make sense to you and they lighten your load of stuff to memorize. 😉
i hope this helps!!!! 💛

not enough africa
I came across this line in Wired magazine, nearly thirty years ago, in a conversation between the polymath-musician, Brian Eno, and Kevin Kelly (https://www.wired.com/1995/05/eno-2/ ) : “The problem with computers,” Eno said, “is that there is not enough Africa in them…” This can be interpreted in a number of ways, one of them as a kind of inverted racism, but I think what Eno was trying to get across was the idea of Africa as a metaphor for the fuzzy logic and intuitive physicality that is entirely absent from a Western engagement with technology. You could apply the same idea to design and communications today. Both have become so hidebound by conventions and protocols so inflexible, unimaginative, and lacking in real human engagement that Eno’s perspective of putting “a little Africa” into our current ideas about them may be the only way to liberate our creative thinking – and rescue them from diminishing effectiveness. Much of so-called ‘smart’ thinking about both today is undone by a pervasive disregard for people’s individual capacity for unpredictability.  The fatal flaw of many designed environments, both physical and virtual – an ‘environment’ being anything from a web page, TV ad or a computer game to a living space, a shopping mall or a household appliance – is that consideration for aesthetics and technology comes first, the expressive, improvisational nature of human functionality second. They lack not just basic utility, but soul. Intuitiveness is missing, and instead of our awareness being enhanced, our minds and senses are overloaded. Too often, too, real creativity has been replaced by what Malcolm McLaren has called, “a karaoke world, a world without a point of view… it is a virtual replay of something that has happened before: life by proxy – liberated by hindsight, unencumbered by the messy process of creativity and free of any responsibility.” The result: media and humanity have become, somehow, disconnected. Which is why, these days, I find myself arguing for some kind of benign chaos, and abandoning a measure of organisation and structure (both inherent in the definition of ‘design’) to allow for more random, unmediated patches of unmanaged response and purposelessness – even just plain silence. I’m arguing for more humanity, for more Africa. We’re reminded by post-modern social thinkers that the emphasis on design nowadays is inextricable from the emergence of shopping as the primary culture of developed societies. More and more products compete for our attention, and each has to communicate a unique distinction to capture a jaded consumer’s attention. The trouble is, the context (design) often overwhelms the content and the consumer, who is drawn by the context is left dissatisfied and frustrated. Which makes them harder and harder to reach, to communicate with. It becomes a self-negating cycle: design rather than substance is used to attract the and briefly sustain the consumer’s attention. Its allure fades and ends up disappearing into the irritating white noise that surrounds our lives. And the disappointed consumer, still compelled by a search for meaning or resonance, just moves onto the next thing. Marketers and product managers too often think of their markets as somehow orderly, navigable, the result of a coherent architecture, rather like the cities of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, or Canberra (both of which were purpose-built as their nation’s capitals but suffer from a sterility that compels a degree of both individual isolation and collective dysfunction). In fact, most markets are like Lagos in Nigeria. If you've seen recent photos of this city, you’ll immediately understand what I mean: there, unfinished freeways and main roads blocked by cars and buses — which use them as parking lots — evolve as extemporary autonomous zones, as shanty towns and massive, makeshift bazaars, loci for simultaneous domestic, social and commercial interaction; they're no longer useful as arteries for any kind of mechanized traffic, but work effectively, if chaotically, in other, better ways. Interestingly, in 1999 and 2000, the Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas and the Harvard Design School’s Project on the City studied Lagos, Nigeria and the total breakdown of basic infrastructure and civil order there that defies conventional wisdom on how cities develop. Koolhaas wrote, “We resist the notion that Lagos represents an African city en route to becoming modern… Rather, we think it possible to argue that it represents an extreme and paradigmatic study of a city at the forefront of globalizing modernity. “That is to say, Lagos is not catching up with us. Rather, we may be catching up with Lagos.” If design and communications are to evolve, if they’re to continue to be effective, they have to acknowledge the increasing incoherence and lack of control that are apparent in today’s fragmented, individualised audience/consumer base. They have to become somehow chaos-compliant, rather than operate on the artificial construct of demographic or social order. They have to respond to the human, and the natural disorder that defines that.

Best Animated Short Film Nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards (2021, listed in order of appearance in the shorts package)
NOTE: For viewers in the United States (continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawai’i) who would like to watch the Oscar-nominated short film packages, click here. For virtual cinemas, you can purchase the packages individually or all three at once. You can find info about reopened theaters that are playing the packages in that link. Because moviegoing carries risks at this time, please remember to follow health and safety guidelines as outlined by your local, regional, and national health officials.
Continuing with one of my favorite Oscar-time traditions, here is an omnibus review of this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Short Film. This is an older category than many might believe to be, with some of the first nominees and winner including ‘30s and ‘40s fixtures: Disney’s Silly Symphonies, Warner Bros.’ Looney Tunes, MGM’s Tom and Jerry and Happy Harmonies. These days, the category tends to be more democratic (perhaps not so much this year), but certainly more experimental. Here are the nominees, as they appeared in the order of how they appeared in the short film packages released to theaters and virtual cinemas in the United States:
Burrow (2020)
Burrow, directed by Madeline Sharafian (story artist on 2017’s Coco, writer on Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears), is the eighth in Pixar’s SparkShorts series, in which Pixar’s junior animators craft a short film on a limited budget and timeframe. This is the film that played in front of Soul for those lucky enough to view that film theatrically. This dialogue-free, hand-drawn film stars a young rabbit, looking to dig out and furnish her own home – complete with a bathroom-disco (or something like that). Her best-laid plans, however, seem dashed when she keeps digging and running into other animals’ underground abodes in this area. Not that these animals seem to mind the intrusions too much. The rabbit, so anxiety-driven in her eagerness to project a picture of self-assuredness, soon realizes that these nearby animals she fears to have disturbed are all neighbors, a community ready to lend a paw for the newcomer.
Sharafian credits her sense of impostors’ syndrome when first working at Pixar as the film’s primary thematic inspiration. With only a bare number of lines, the rabbit expresses a vast array of emotions, endearing the audience to her self-dramatization and youthful insecurity. Drawn flatly but nevertheless suggesting some depth, the cutaway animation depicting the burrow neighborhood recalls Richard Scarry’s books and other such colorful ensemble illustrations found in children’s picture books. Burrow is a worthy addition to Disney/Pixar’s animated short film legacy, despite the lack of innovation and obvious low-budget appeal (it uses the third movement of Mozart’s Oboe Concerto as its soundtrack), and seems like something that could have been made during the heyday of Silly Symphonies or Warner Bros.’ Merrie Melodies.
My rating: 7/10
Genius Loci (2020, France)
From the Latin term meaning “the spirit of a place”, Adrien Mérigeau’s Genius Loci is the most difficult, abstract film of this year’s slate of nominees. Genius Loci stars a young black woman named Reine (Nadia Moussa), a solitary soul who embarks upon, while walking the streets of Paris at night, an existential revelation. Reine, who is supposed to be babysitting her nephew that evening, decides to have a small adventure instead. She will find this experience and this Parisian neighborhood disorienting and chaotic, in many of the ways that life in a sprawling metropolis can be. The film’s sound mix clangs, whispers, vibrates, and echoes into Reine’s soul, injecting feelings of harmony, but mostly those of displacement. The distant rumbling of traffic is subliminal here, crescendoing and decrescendoing to control the film’s tension. Throughout, Mérigeau provides a fragmented narrative (do not fixate on the plot) and the protagonist’s intangible, occasionally abstruse, narration. Spiritual and existential loss colors Reine’s ambling, as well as a sense of modern France’s racial otherizing that makes the city feel unwelcoming, if not antagonistic.
Mérigeau (background cleanup on 2009’s The Secret of Kells, art director on 2014’s Song of the Sea) collaborated with Belgian comic illustrator Brecht Evens (production designer on the excellent Marona’s Fantastic Tale from 2019) for the film’s dumbfounding backgrounds, as well as storyboarding the changes in aesthetic as Reine continues her journey through Paris. Marona’s influence is felt keenly throughout Genius Loci – from the lack of recognizably human figures among strangers to Reine and the ever-changing color scheme. Unlike Marona, Genius Loci commits to watercolors (or computerized animation meant to resemble watercolor paints) during the film’s entirety. The watercolor animation serves to loosen the character animation and the backgrounds’ definition, and serves as a paragon of expressionist animation. Genius Loci will bewilder audiences, challenging them to understand Reine’s painful attempt to find belonging and solace in a place that disallows such reflection.
My rating: 8.5/10
Opera (2020, South Korea)
Opera, directed by Erick Oh (an animator at Berkeley-based Tonko House, which crafted the 2014 nominee The Dam Keeper), is an independent South Korean/American production that owes more to Sandro Botticelli and Hieronymus Bosch than anything ever seen in animated cinema. This is a cinematic fresco teeming with activity, intended more as interactive art than for a movie theater. The setting is a pyramid filled with souls living, laboring, luxuriating, dying. As the camera pans downward from the godlike or prophet-like figures occupying the top, it later zooms outward, all timed alongside a day-night cycle. Opera’s story is that of human history, distilled in eight minutes of repetitive activity. The design of Oh’s film is as a museum installation – projected on a wall or the ground (the only instance Opera has been screened as such was at the Ars Electronica Animation Festival in Linz, Austria) – that loops continuously, and, if one looks closely enough at the pyramid’s sections, there are loops within the film’s loops. If viewed in a museum, Opera does not pan selectively as it does if projected in a theater or a home media screen.
Pieced together in between Oh’s other film projects over four years and a pandemic, Oh and his animators (some of whom participated voluntarily, without pay) concentrated on different sections of the pyramid at a time, synchronizing the action in a specific section to match the surrounding areas – and, ultimately, the film as a whole. Opera contains intricacies impossible to realize on first, second, third viewings. Even in its limited, virtual cinema form, it engulfs the viewer in its hierarchical animation, the intentionally simplistic character animation serving to universalize the drama of its beings’ existence. It is rapturous art, the sort that defies description, and undoubtedly will echo across Oh’s subsequent films.
My rating: 8.5/10
If Anything Happens I Love You (2020)
For some American viewers, I imagine that this title alone has already spoiled the film’s content even without seeing any footage. A Netflix production directed by Will McCormack (co-writer on 2019’s Toy Story 4) and Michael Govier (bit roles in American television), If Anything Happens I Love You is the only nominee in this category directed by individuals with no background in directing animation. McCormack and Govier met at acting school; acting remains their primary profession. Without dialogue, the film opens with two parents eating dinner at opposite ends of the table. They seem aloof, their minds elsewhere. The background is spare, with only a jumble of pencil sketches making sense of any barriers enclosing them. Flexible, animated silhouettes appear from their bodies – sometimes arguing vigorously with each other, at times shadowing the person and attempting to call their attention. Grief overhangs their household, expressed through a largely monotone palette, minimalistic designs and backgrounds. The background artists exclude any detail unnecessary to the story.
Written and crafted in collaboration with (so as to not spoil the film, I am about to opaquely write about this film’s intentions) a prominent, deep-pocketed political non-profit so as to shear the film of any thematic excess, If Anything Happens I Love You has, unlike its fellow nominees, broad support among certain prominent actors in Hollywood. Laura Dern is the executive producer and various actors – including Chelsea Handler, Rashida Jones, and Lesley Ann Warren, among others – have openly contributed or advocated for this movie. The visualization of the parents’ pain, even without dialogue, brings the viewer into a space unfathomable to most, unbearable for those who know too well. The use of the King Princess song “1950” meshes awkwardly with what is being portrayed on-screen at the time. But the character animation – McCormack and Govier’s experience as actors endows the couple with indelible humanity – and its visual discipline carry the film to its heartbreaking conclusion.
My rating: 8/10
Yes-People (2020, Iceland)
Icelandic film Já-Fólkið (Yes-People) is the epitome of cheap European computer-generated animation. Directed by Gísli Darri Halldórsson (a former Cartoon Network Studios character animator), Yes-People – the Best Icelandic Short winner at the 2020 Reykjavik International Film Festival and the Children’s Choice Award winner at 2020’s Nordisk Panorama – is a largely aimless movie following the zany lives of the people who live in an apartment complex. That is all I have to say about the film’s narrative. The sketches it draws in each character’s life always feel disjointed and disconnected from all the others – save one scene of the elderly couple fornicating loud enough for their downstairs neighbors to hear. Halldórsson describes his film as a mosaic of personalities, but even a mosaic has a thematic consistency that unifies its disparate parts.
The desaturated colors of Yes-People are meant to resemble old photographs. As much as I respect what Halldórsson is aiming for, the results make the film look muddy, half-rendered – like a knockoff Pixar short from the early 1990s. Inspired when Halldórsson described to some of his Irish friends about the different tonal meanings of the word “Já” (“hello” in Icelandic), Yes-People only has one repeated word of dialogue throughout: “Já”. Is this supposed to be funny? Philosophical? I am not sure; and I am not sure the film knows it either. Reading some of Halldórsson’s interviews following his Academy Award nomination, he mentions that the film’s positive response from Iceland and Scandinavia might be culturally specific, as opposed to other parts of the world. As to what those cultural differences might be that prevented me from liking this film, I hardly have a clue.
My rating: 6/10
