Beginner Yoga How To Include Peace Of Mind Exercises Within Your Yoga Practice

Wellnessbeing Yoga practice can bring peace of mind. By the end of the yoga class we usually forget the burning desire or important concern that occupied our mind. Peace pervades both mind and body. Here are a few yoga exercises that help you gain peace of mind.
1. Begin with Centering
What is centering? It's a method which helps to turn the mind inward and works to quiet our busy mind. In kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, a specific mantra is chanted at the beginning of every class and personal practice. In some hatha yoga classes the mantra 'Om' is chanted. This opening activity takes only a few minutes and makes a huge positive impact on our state of consciousness and thus prepares us for our yoga practice.
The use of a mantra has a direct effect on the mind, and beginning your personal practice with a chant draws a subtle starting line that adds something special to your experience. How would you describe that inward journey - sacred, soulful or something else? I am always fascinated by the various ways we describe our experience of the same exercise.
2. Chanting during Practice
In our personal practice we can decide to chant 'Om' aloud at the beginning of the asana portion of our practice. If you start with the Sun or Moon salutation you can chant either when you are moving into the pose, or slow the practice down by chanting one 'Om' as you hold the pose. You may want to explore to find out when it is most natural for you to chant. Do you increase or decrease the chant volume as you practice? Does it feel natural to stop chanting aloud after a while?
3. Hand Mudra
A common hand mudra is holding the hands in prayer position. This mudra, called Namaste mudra, can be held when standing at rest in Tadasana. You can hold the hands at the chest and let the thumbs touch the sternum. Notice how each finger rests against its pair and whether one hand presses more into the other. Can you distribute the pressure evenly between both hands? Are you using excess effort?
Feel your feet to the earth, hands at the heart, and head to the sky. Next sense your whole body as a single unit, then bring the breath into your awareness. This rest between poses can become a standard within your personal practice; an exercise to draw the mind inward.
As a beginner yoga student you can design your personal practice to include the elements that are most effective to quiet the mind. my late saturday night silly thought led me down a rabbit hole search this morning looking for answers.
i’ve seen yoga orgs credit the beatles for bringing yoga to the western world for years. it’s a comment that always sounds weird because the beatles rarely if ever refer to TM as “yoga”. i’ve been wondering about TM content for a while, and from what i’ve found, none of it seems to follow a specific type of yoga style you see today (hatha to ashtanga to vinyasa). from what i can tell it’s the maharishi’s own style of meditation by mantra with a sprinkling of eastern philosophy watered down for westerners. however, the goal of obtaining enlightenment fits in the yoga practice so generally it still fits under the yoga umbrella.
attributing the beatles to the introduction is also weird because yoga was being practiced in the western world way before they got into the maharishi’s transcendental meditation in 1967. but it’s undeniable that the band’s reach meant it exposed people to eastern philosophy that wouldn’t otherwise. i’ll admit i probably was more open to indian culture and my friend’s bollywood soundtracks as a kid because of indian instruments in beatles music. so even in early exposure, the meditative elements of yoga were never strange to me.
a 2011 dissertation’s timeline of modern yoga in britain includes TM and the beatles in this history, even though its got 19 pages before 1967. for example, the maharishi first lectured in london in 1960, hatha yoga was happening in the 1920s, and poses were incorporated into military training in ww2.

i wasn’t thinking about the sitar being their entry point for yoga poses, but it makes sense that TM wasn’t their first exposure to yoga.
looks like you can start playing sitar in a general crosslegged position (sukhasana), working up to siddhasana (perfect pose). but the professional sitar players like Ravi Shankar use gomukhasana (cow face), resting the gourd of the sitar on the bottom of your left foot.
the big trouble with sitar playing is how long you play in this position. playing is a meditative type of practice that can go hours. a sequence of asanas (like in sun salutations) are needed to prepare your legs, back, hips, etc. and work yourself up to longer and longer playing.
my guess is that this would be similar for meditation if you’re looking at working up to 8-hour long sessions, like george and john. padmasana (lotus pose) is the classic one that most meditation practice works up to, but it’s difficult and probably not one they were using for hours long meditation in india.
another post for another time, but the trouble i find with TM is how it takes this natural idea of having to work up to harder poses and longer meditation and turns it into some kind of scientology-like pyramid scheme with tiered levels of knowledge, a godly type figurehead, and pay-to-play business practices. this sets up for competitive and obsessive personalities to become fixated on reaching unrealistic, unobtainable, or totally fantastical goals (re: levitation). it’s where you see reports of mental health crises and cult-like behavior, and even though it may be more self-inflected by the communities that erupt around TM than the TM organizational structure itself, the main organization does actively cherrypick outcomes by suppressing bad ones and only marketing good ones. this isn’t exactly unique to TM, as anyone with exposure to yoga studios and their fanatics (see yoga instructor pipelines) may be familiar with. it’s just larger so its effects are more widespread, in part because of the beatles association. the maharishi died several years ago, but the organization continues to train people around the world with his method and invokes his name with religious type fervor.

Seen a few of these posts so I figured I'd share as well! I use these for reference mostly, and personally prefer to do my practice irl. All are free!
Labyrinthos- this is a tarot app mostly, though it also has some astronomy info. I wouldn't recommend it if you're just starting with tarot, because the descriptions are over simplified and lacking. It does have a "learn" feature that can help you memorize/learn the basics though and for that it's pretty good! I use this to save tarot spread layouts that I use with my cards irl. It let's you create your own custom spreads and save them.
Co-Star- an astronomy/horoscope app. I love it because it does your birth chart for you in an easy to understand format and you can go back and reference it quick if you need it! But the descriptions of what everything in the chart means is also lacking and waay oversimplified here too, and none of the "aspects" are included. It'll do "daily horoscopes" but it won't have info on why/how it concluded that information based on your birth chart.
Moon phase calendar- a must for me! Always gotta know what the moon is doin. It has a lot of detail, including the percentage of visibility and rise/set times.
Make it rain- rain/thunderstorm sounds for meditation and practice
PictureThis- this is my favorite free plant identification app, and I'm pretty picky lol
Herbs dictionary- this is purely scientific information on an insane number of herbs, with medical uses as well. No magical uses listed. Again, this is for quick reference!!. If I'M personally using an herb for medicinal purposes it's because I'm familiar with it and know which are safe for me, don't just use whatever random herb some phone app says may help... Be safe.
Herbalist Grimoire- I think this one has about 70 herbs? And their magical correspondences. I love it for quick reference! It also explains how to use herbs (like making tinctures, oils, satchets, etc), a glossary of medical terms related to herbs, basics on how to grow herbs, and a brief history of herbs in witchcraft.
LunaDiary- a password protected night-mode diary with adjustable font and formatting and calming music. I use it for note taking, spells, ideas, some of which later goes into my grimoire. It has a back-up feature that uploads it to my Google drive. Plus the more notes you make, the more lunar phases and stars you get in the home page, so that's cute.
The occult library- exactly what it sounds like, it's got different witchcraft related books you can read for free.
Play Books- the basic Google play book app, I go to the android play store and download free books of interest related to my craft and philosophies I follow and read them here.
Improve intuition (called "intuition test" in the playstore for some reason tho)- this one has several choice-related activities that challenge your intuition skills! Big recommend.
Respire- a meditation app with different breathing exercises. I'm not a fan of hearing someone talk me through a guided meditation, so following a breathing exercise works much better for me. You can close your eyes and it'll make a ding sound to let you know when to breathe in, hold, and breathe out.
Down dog- an AMAZING free yoga app! It has restorative yoga, hatha, quick flow, and sun salutations in the free version. With different music genre to choose from that plays what seems like a genre radio. You can adjust the difficulty level, speed, and length. The instructors are great at guiding and the video to follow is aesthetically nice and it's all very easy to understand. Truly can't recommend this one enough.
I'm hoping to find an app that has a sheet to fill out for saving spells, like it would be great if it has the day/time, lunar phase, title, intent, tools, instructions, and outcomes to fill out. If you know of one, please let me know!
