Dandelion News - February 15-21
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $kaybarr1735 or check out my Dandelion Doodles!
1. Solar farms managed for nature boost bird abundance and diversity, new study finds
“There were more than twice as many farmland birds in the well-managed solar farms compared with the intensively farmed land, and nearly 16 times as many woodland birds. […] Overall, diversity was 2.5 times higher, while woodland birds were nine times more diverse.”
2. Washington judge blocks Trump’s gender-affirming care ban, says it's unconstitutional in multiple ways
“This marks the second time in a week that a judge has stood in the way of Trump’s attacks on trans kids. [… The ruling grants] a temporary restraining order that halts enforcement of provisions in Trump’s directive that would cut off federal funding to medical institutions that provide gender-affirming care to minors.”
3. Fog harvesting could provide water for arid cities
“17,000 sq m of mesh could produce enough water to meet the weekly water demand of [… the] urban slums. 110 sq m could meet the annual demand for the irrigation of the city's green spaces. Fog water could be used for soil-free (hydroponic) agriculture, with yields of 33 to 44lb (15 to 20kg) of green vegetables in a month.”
4. Audubon Applauds Bipartisan Federal Effort to Protect Delaware River Basin with Critical Reauthorization Bill
“The bill would […] ensure long-term conservation and restoration efforts, expand the official definition of the basin to include Maryland, and prioritize projects that serve small, rural, and disadvantaged communities. […] The watershed provides important year-round habitats and critical migratory stopovers for approximately 400 bird species[….]”
5. mRNA vaccines show promise in pancreatic cancer in early trial
“Half of the people in the study — eight of the participants — responded to the vaccine, producing T cells that targeted their tumors. […] Just two of the patients who had a response to the vaccine had their cancer return during the three-year follow- up, compared to seven of the eight who did not respond to the vaccine treatments.”
6. Minn. Lt. Gov. Flanagan Makes It Official; She's running for U.S. Senate
“[Flanagan has] “championed kitchen-table issues like raising the minimum wage, paid family and medical leave, and free school meals.” If elected, Flanagan, a tribal citizen of the White Earth Nation, would become the first Native American female U.S. senator in history.”
7. Federal Funding Restored for Low-Income Alabama Utility Assistance After Outcry

“A program meant to help low-income Alabamians pay their utility bills has resumed two weeks after it was canceled due to an executive order from President Donald Trump. […] “We can confirm the funds are reaching those affected by the previous pause[….]””
8. Modeling study suggests Amazon rainforest is more resilient than assumed
“[Previous] studies were either conducted with global climate models that used a simplified representation of convection [or were on a regional scale….] According to the computations, mean annual precipitation in the Amazon does not change significantly even after complete deforestation.“
9. States are moving forward with Buy Clean policies despite Trump reversal
““Buy Clean is a great example of how states and other nonfederal actors can continue to press forward on climate action, regardless of what the federal government does,” said Casey Katims, executive director of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of two dozen governors.”
10. The rewilded golf courses teeming with life
“A wildflower meadow, ponds, scrub habitat, coastline and even an area of peat bog can be found on this little 60-acre (24-hectare) plot, which boasts roe deer, otters, lizards, eels and a huge array of insects and birds.”

A huge ancient city has been found in the Amazon, hidden for thousands of years by lush vegetation.
The discovery changes what we know about the history of people living in the Amazon.
The houses and plazas in the Upano area in eastern Ecuador were connected by an astounding network of roads and canals.
The area lies in the shadow of a volcano that created rich local soils but also may have led to the destruction of the society.
While we knew about cities in the highlands of South America, like Machu Picchu in Peru, it was believed that people only lived nomadically or in tiny settlements in the Amazon.
"This is older than any other site we know in the Amazon. We have a Eurocentric view of civilisation, but this shows we have to change our idea about what is culture and civilisation," says Prof Stephen Rostain, director of investigation at the National Centre for Scientific Research in France, who led the research.
"It changes the way we see Amazonian cultures. Most people picture small groups, probably naked, living in huts and clearing land - this shows ancient people lived in complicated urban societies," says co-author Antoine Dorison.
The city was built around 2,500 years ago, and people lived there for up to 1,000 years, according to archaeologists.
It is difficult to accurately estimate how many people lived there at any one time, but scientists say it is certainly in the 10,000s if not 100,000s.
The archaeologists combined ground excavations with a survey of a 300 sq km (116 sq mile) area using laser sensors flown on a plane that could identify remains of the city beneath the dense plants and trees.
—
"The road network is very sophisticated. It extends over a vast distance, everything is connected. And there are right angles, which is very impressive," he says, explaining that it is much harder to build a straight road than one that fits in with the landscape.
The scientists also identified causeways with ditches on either side which they believe were canals that helped manage the abundant water in the region.
There were signs of threats to the cities - some ditches blocked entrances to the settlements, and may be evidence of threats from nearby people.
Researchers first found evidence of a city in the 1970s, but this is the first time a comprehensive survey has been completed, after 25 years of research.
It reveals a large, complex society that appears to be even bigger than the well-known Mayan societies in Mexico and Central America.
—
Some of the findings are "unique" for South America, he explains, pointing to the octagonal and rectangular platforms arranged together.
The societies were clearly well-organised and interconnected, he says, highlighting the long sunken roads between settlements.
Not a huge amount is known about the people who lived there and what their societies were like.
Pits and hearths were found in the platforms, as well as jars, stones to grind plants and burnt seeds.
—
Prof Rostain says he was warned against this research at the start of his career because scientists believed no ancient groups had lived in the Amazon.
#indigenous#the amazon#anthropology#archaeology#south america#turtle island#the amazon rainforest#its the bbc so it still is eurocentric#but bolding and sharing some parts that are interesting#white scientists could save so much time by not assuming shit#i think thats part of the scientific method#some of the language is a bit iffy to me too#i dont really enjoy when non natives get to ‘discover’ something that has always been there#and was made and mightve known about by any local tribes#but hey this is cool~#and more proof that we’ve been here longer than colonizers wanna think

René Amuan Santiago Tí remembers how, armed only with wooden spears, he and his companions disarmed a group of policemen as they drew their pistols, after they caught the officers escorting a barge full of illegal mining machinery. The guns went in the river.
Disarming the police officers was a risky move, but the members of the Charip, as the Indigenous guards of the Wampis Nation people are known, were confident that something was amiss.
Charip means lightning, and for the territorial defenders it symbolises the way they strike against invaders of their land along the Santiago River, in the far north of Peru on its Amazonian frontier with Ecuador.
The three police officers, who were detained alongside Ecuadorian and Peruvian nationals in the incident in April 2024, were moonlighting as hired guns for illegal goldminers and were hundreds of miles from where they were based in Piura, a coastal region of Peru.
The Wampis refused to release them until the government sent a high-level commission to address the problem of wildcat goldminers plundering and polluting their land.
A few days later, a military helicopter carrying the deputy interior minister and the high commissioner against illegal mining touched down in Villa Gonzalo. Thousands of Wampis people had assembled in the village, its Charip warriors adorned in war paint. They demanded respect for their territory and action to expel the invaders.
Nearly a year later, the Charip guardians – rather than the state – have exerted control. They use stop-and-search at a checkpoint to thin out the number of mining dredgers upriver, says Santiago Tí, leader of the band of less than a dozen men who work day and night.
“We welcome visitors but will not allow people who come to do us harm,” he says. “If they come to extract gold or destroy our forest, then we are fierce. We are very protective of our forest.”
The Wampis people face a conundrum. They are the only Indigenous people in Peru to have created their own territorial government – an act of self-determination and a response to the state’s absence in the northern reaches of Condorcanqui province in the Amazonas region.
But while they have shown resilience and organisation in confronting illegal miners, they do not have the firepower to take on the criminal gangs behind the gold rush that is reaching ever deeper into Amazon border regions, as the international gold price surpasses $3,000 (£2,300) an ounce this month, a record high.
“We are seeing how different criminal economies are expanding their presence, territorial control and political influence in the Amazon,” says Raphael Hoetmer, western Amazon programme director at the environmental group Amazon Watch. “Organised crime is becoming a major threat to the global climate.”
The autonomous territorial government of the Wampis Nation was formed in 2017, a 13,000 sq km (5,000 sq mile) stretch of mountain and lowland rainforest across the Santiago and Morona river basins, with a population of about 15,000 people in 22 titled communities.
The nation was created under international laws that recognise the self-determination of Indigenous people, such as the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, which was enshrined in the Peruvian constitution.
River dredging for gold is prohibited in the territory, and the autonomous government has made clear its intention to seize and destroy any equipment found.
What the Charip members lack in resources, they make up for in spirit. From a wooden shed that resembles a birdwatching hide perched on the brow of a riverbank, they look out across the river. All vessels that pass – from canoes powered by puttering peque-peque motors to larger chalupas that carry passengers and goods – must stop to be inspected.
Each wears a donated bulletproof vest and carries a blackened nanki, a spear carved from tough chonta palm. One of them, Edgar Tí, is cordial as he inspects a boat that pulls up on the riverbank, registers the details on a clipboard, questions the driver and passengers, and checks for mining supplies such as plastic tubing, motor pumps or jerrycans of diesel.
Miners caught for the first time get off with a warning, but the Charip mete out Indigenous justice to reoffenders. They lash them with an ishanga, a type of Amazon nettle, or tie them for five minutes to a tangarana tree. This tree has a symbiotic relationship with aggressive fire ants, which attack any perceived threat to their home.
Santiago Tí says the nettles and ant bites, despite being painful, are used in traditional medicine to treat aches and pains, including arthritis. But chastised miners do not appreciate the punishment and several of the young men say they have received threats on instant messaging apps.
Older leaders, such as Alfonso Awananch Flores, the nation’s director of environment and territorial control, have been threatened, too. He says he avoids travelling to the larger towns since he was briefly abducted and interrogated.
“Without territory, we are not Wampis people,” says Flores, 45. That is why, he argues, they have strict management of their territorial autonomy and “cannot allow an activity that destroys our land, pollutes our river and poisons our fish”.
“We don’t need the state’s permission to declare our self-autonomy; we have been here for 7,000 years,” he says.
“We don’t need their recognition either. We have the right to become a territorial government.”
But they do need the armed forces to crack down on the dredgers, Flores admits, as the division between those opposed to mining and those who favour the illegal activity has split communities.
“We don’t want to create conflicts between families. That’s why we want the state to enforce the law,” he says.
Teófilo Kukush, the pamuk, or leader of the Wampis Nation, says miners are using children as “human shields” on dredgers to prevent the police and navy destroying the craft. “They pay the parents in communities to use their children,” says Kukush, who wears a red and yellow macaw feather crown signalling his status.
He is calling on the government to declare a state of emergency in the Santiago River and expel the miners.
“They make us fight among ourselves, and the mining groups have hired assassins who threaten us,” he says.
#excerpts#goes on to talk about other communities that feel they have no choice but to work with the miners#peru#indigenous rights#environment#illegal mining#south america

"wow wildfire air in my house sucks to breathe" -so true bestie.
This is a diy air purifier, haven't tried this myself so i can't speak for its effectiveness, but a quick Google search told me that diy corsi-rosenthal boxes are a thing.
Alternatively, if it's affordable and accessible, this is the air purifier model I got (using amazon link just cuz that's the easiest for me to pinpoint which model it was). It's good for allergens and dust too.
If you're shopping for an air purifier, or any filters, I heard to make sure you get the TRUE HEPA filters, not just HEPA. My teacher suffered from intense allergies and lung sensitivities so they had to get the right air purifier for him, and he let me know that there's a difference between HEPA and True HEPA -- he recommends True HEPA. But after doing a bit more digging, there's some discussion whether "True" HEPA is an actual improvement or just a marketing gimmick. So researching what works and is accessible for you is the way to go.
When circulating the air, make sure your windows are closed so that you don't draw more smokey air from outside.
From my experience, air purifiers tend to make the air very dry. If you have a humidifier, don't use it and the purifier at the same time, which makes both of them less effective. Instead, rotate their usage so that they run one at a time.
At the end of the day, do make sure you do your own research, but I hope this at least helps a bit
#take all this with a grain of salt in not an air expert haha#but it's frikn smokey again today#so i thought id share cuz this suuuuucks#important#wildfire#air purifier

As a fitness writer based in Brooklyn, I’ve tried every trend from SoulCycle to HIIT—but nothing transformed my routine like the Pilates bar. When my cramped apartment and 60-hour workweek made gym trips impossible, this $60 tool became my secret weapon. If you’re wondering whether a Pilates bar can deliver studio-like results without the price tag, let me break down exactly what worked (and what didn’t) after two years of daily use.
What Is a Pilates Bar? A Beginner’s Guide
A Pilates bar is a portable, adjustable rod paired with resistance bands, designed to replicate reformer-like tension. Think of it as a compact home gym:
Adjustable length (24–48 inches) to fit all heights.
Interchangeable bands (10–30 lbs resistance) for scalability.
Ankle straps and door anchors for 50+ exercises, from leg lifts to back rows.
My Lightbulb Moment: After a rotator cuff injury, my physical therapist recommended Pilates for rehab. The bar’s controlled resistance rebuilt my shoulder strength faster than dumbbells—and saved me $1,200 in studio fees.
Why Americans Are Obsessed with Pilates Bars
Space-Saving Design
Perfect for apartments (I live in 450 sq ft!), RVs, or dorm rooms. Mine tucks under my couch.
Pro Tip: Use door anchors for vertical exercises like “Lat Pull-Downs” in small spaces.
Budget-Friendly Fitness
With inflation squeezing wallets, a one-time 50–50–150 investment beats $200/month gym memberships.
Post-Pandemic Flexibility
72% of Americans now prefer home workouts (Forbes, 2023). The bar lets you stream Pilates classes on YouTube or Peloton without leaving home.
Pros & Cons: My Unfiltered Review
✅ Why I’m Hooked
Full-Body Results: My 20-minute routines target arms, legs, and core. Try “Plank Rows” for a sculpted back or “Standing Kickbacks” for lifted glutes.
Beginner-Friendly: My 65-year-old mom in Florida uses the lightest band for arthritis-friendly workouts.
Travel-Ready: I’ve used mine in Airbnbs, parks, and even during a layover at LAX.
❌ The Not-So-Perfect Side
Steep Learning Curve: The ankle straps confused me at first (think: tangled mess). Stick with it—it gets easier!
Not a Reformer: Hardcore Pilates fans might miss advanced moves like “Long Stretch Series.”
Pilates Bar vs. Resistance Bands: Which Should You Buy?
Resistance bands are cheaper (15–40) and great for travel, but they lack the bar’s stability for compound moves. For example:
Pilates Bar: Unlocks exercises like “Squat to Overhead Press” (legs + arms + core).
Resistance Bands: Best for isolated moves like bicep curls or lateral walks.
My Verdict: If you’re serious about Pilates, the bar is worth the splurge. For casual users, bands are a solid start.
Who Needs a Pilates Bar?
Busy Parents
Sneak in 10-minute workouts during nap time or soccer practice.
Office Workers
Combat “tech neck” with upper-back exercises like “Chest Expansions.”
Seniors
Improve balance and joint mobility with low-impact moves.
Real Success Story: “I bought the ProFlex Pilates Bar after reading Jane’s review. As a postpartum mom in Texas, the guided workouts helped me rebuild my core safely. Now I’m back in my pre-pregnancy jeans!” – Emily, Dallas
5 Mistakes to Avoid (Learn from My Blunders!)
Skipping the Instructions
I tore a band by misattaching it. Always follow the guide!
Ignoring Form
Rushed “Russian Twists” left me with a sore lower back. Move slowly and engage your core.
Using Worn-Out Bands
Replace frayed bands ASAP. My snapped mid-squat—lesson learned.
Overcomplicating Workouts
Master basics like “Seated Rows” before attempting advanced flows.
Buying Cheap Kits
My first $30 Amazon bar broke in a month. Invest in quality (more below).
How to Choose the Best Pilates Bar
Durability
Aircraft-grade aluminum bars (like the ProFlex) last for years. Avoid plastic clips!
Resistance Range
Look for 10–30 lbs bands. Heavy lifters can add extra bands later.
Accessories
Ankle straps and door anchors = more exercise variety.
Guided Support
Video tutorials > vague PDFs. My favorite kit includes a 12-week plan.
Final Thoughts: Is a Pilates Bar Worth Your Money?
If you want a low-impact, space-efficient tool that delivers Pilates studio results at home—100% yes. It’s not a magic wand, but with consistency, you’ll see gains in strength, posture, and flexibility.
My #1 Recommendation: After testing a dozen kits, the ProFlex Pilates Bar is my go-to. It’s sturdy, includes lifetime customer support, and costs less than two Barry’s Bootcamp classes.

Building Scalable Web Applications: Best Practices for Full Stack Developers
Scalability is one of the most crucial factors in web application development. In today’s dynamic digital landscape, applications need to be prepared to handle increased user demand, data growth, and evolving business requirements without compromising performance. For full stack developers, mastering scalability is not just an option—it’s a necessity. This guide explores the best practices for building scalable web applications, equipping developers with the tools and strategies needed to ensure their projects can grow seamlessly.
What Is Scalability in Web Development?
Scalability refers to a system’s ability to handle increased loads by adding resources, optimizing processes, or both. A scalable web application can:
Accommodate growing numbers of users and requests.
Handle larger datasets efficiently.
Adapt to changes without requiring complete redesigns.
There are two primary types of scalability:
Vertical Scaling: Adding more power (CPU, RAM, storage) to a single server.
Horizontal Scaling: Adding more servers to distribute the load.
Each type has its use cases, and a well-designed application often employs a mix of both.
Best Practices for Building Scalable Web Applications
1. Adopt a Microservices Architecture
What It Is: Break your application into smaller, independent services that can be developed, deployed, and scaled independently.
Why It Matters: Microservices prevent a single point of failure and allow different parts of the application to scale based on their unique needs.
Tools to Use: Kubernetes, Docker, AWS Lambda.
2. Optimize Database Performance
Use Indexing: Ensure your database queries are optimized with proper indexing.
Database Partitioning: Divide large databases into smaller, more manageable pieces using horizontal or vertical partitioning.
Choose the Right Database Type:
Use SQL databases like PostgreSQL for structured data.
Use NoSQL databases like MongoDB for unstructured or semi-structured data.
Implement Caching: Use caching mechanisms like Redis or Memcached to store frequently accessed data and reduce database load.
3. Leverage Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)
CDNs distribute static assets (images, videos, scripts) across multiple servers worldwide, reducing latency and improving load times for users globally.
Popular CDN Providers: Cloudflare, Akamai, Amazon CloudFront.
Benefits:
Faster content delivery.
Reduced server load.
Improved user experience.
4. Implement Load Balancing
Load balancers distribute incoming requests across multiple servers, ensuring no single server becomes overwhelmed.
Types of Load Balancing:
Hardware Load Balancers: Physical devices.
Software Load Balancers: Nginx, HAProxy.
Cloud Load Balancers: AWS Elastic Load Balancing, Google Cloud Load Balancing.
Best Practices:
Use sticky sessions if needed to maintain session consistency.
Monitor server health regularly.
5. Use Asynchronous Processing
Why It’s Important: Synchronous operations can cause bottlenecks in high-traffic scenarios.
How to Implement:
Use message queues like RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, or AWS SQS to handle background tasks.
Implement asynchronous APIs with frameworks like Node.js or Django Channels.
6. Embrace Cloud-Native Development
Cloud platforms provide scalable infrastructure that can adapt to your application’s needs.
Key Features to Leverage:
Autoscaling for servers.
Managed database services.
Serverless computing.
Popular Cloud Providers: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure.
7. Design for High Availability (HA)
Ensure that your application remains operational even in the event of hardware failures, network issues, or unexpected traffic spikes.
Strategies for High Availability:
Redundant servers.
Failover mechanisms.
Regular backups and disaster recovery plans.
8. Optimize Front-End Performance
Scalability is not just about the back end; the front end plays a significant role in delivering a seamless experience.
Best Practices:
Minify and compress CSS, JavaScript, and HTML files.
Use lazy loading for images and videos.
Implement browser caching.
Use tools like Lighthouse to identify performance bottlenecks.
9. Monitor and Analyze Performance
Continuous monitoring helps identify and address bottlenecks before they become critical issues.
Tools to Use:
Application Performance Monitoring (APM): New Relic, Datadog.
Logging and Error Tracking: ELK Stack, Sentry.
Server Monitoring: Nagios, Prometheus.
Key Metrics to Monitor:
Response times.
Server CPU and memory usage.
Database query performance.
Network latency.
10. Test for Scalability
Regular testing ensures your application can handle increasing loads.
Types of Tests:
Load Testing: Simulate normal usage levels.
Stress Testing: Push the application beyond its limits to identify breaking points.
Capacity Testing: Determine how many users the application can handle effectively.
Tools for Testing: Apache JMeter, Gatling, Locust.
Case Study: Scaling a Real-World Application
Scenario: A growing e-commerce platform faced frequent slowdowns during flash sales.
Solutions Implemented:
Adopted a microservices architecture to separate order processing, user management, and inventory systems.
Integrated Redis for caching frequently accessed product data.
Leveraged AWS Elastic Load Balancer to manage traffic spikes.
Optimized SQL queries and implemented database sharding for better performance.
Results:
Improved application response times by 40%.
Seamlessly handled a 300% increase in traffic during peak events.
Achieved 99.99% uptime.
Conclusion
Building scalable web applications is essential for long-term success in an increasingly digital world. By implementing best practices such as adopting microservices, optimizing databases, leveraging CDNs, and embracing cloud-native development, full stack developers can ensure their applications are prepared to handle growth without compromising performance.
Scalability isn’t just about handling more users; it’s about delivering a consistent, reliable experience as your application evolves. Start incorporating these practices today to future-proof your web applications and meet the demands of tomorrow’s users.

More and more places are unfortunately becoming fabric deserts where the only options people have are Joanne and hobby lobby because they choked out any of the smaller businesses.
But the even shittier thing about that, is now those big companies are even threatening to go under. Fabric.com, which was widely the best option to get good fabrics all over the country, was unfortunately bought by Amazon, who then eventually closed out, taking that option out of many hands. And now there are rumors of Joanne going completely out of business too.
There is hope that when the big chain stores are gone, there will be a resurgence of smaller businesses with more quality goods again, but that will still take years.
I don't know of to many good stores for good fabrics any more, but here are a for if anyone is near any of them
https://www.fabricplacebasement.com/
Has two locations, one in Natick MA, and one in Alexandria VA
These two are in Chicago IL
Two locations, one in Brooklyn Park MN, and one in Burnsville MN
I feel like something that doesnt get talked about enough is how fast fashion is coming to hobbies as well. Sure, you can sew, knit, and crochet something better than youd buy in store, but good luck finding quality materials
Want a fabric that doesnt fray from being gently caressed? Want yarn thats not 100% plastic and splits if you touch it wrong? Good luck finding that if you dont have a genuinely good crafts store near you.
Go on any thread where people are trying to figure out where to buy fabric. 50% of it is people saying big stores are servicable, online stores work, or the like, and the other 50% are talking about how bad the quality is or how the quality of a website dropped because it was bought out
Were running into a problem where fast fashiob is so integrated into society that even the ability to make your own, comfortable and long lasting, clothes is being threatened by capitalism
#fabric#sewing#shamelessly plugging my work as one of the few good places left to get quality fabric#blarg

Lambda Live: Building Event-Driven Architectures
In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, event-driven architectures (EDAs) are rapidly becoming the go-to solution for building scalable, resilient, and efficient applications. At the heart of this shift is AWS Lambda, a serverless computing service that enables developers to run code without provisioning or managing servers. In this article, we’ll explore how AWS Lambda powers event-driven architectures, enabling real-time processing, automation, and seamless integration between various services.
What is an Event-Driven Architecture?
Event-driven architecture is a design pattern where systems react to events rather than following a traditional request-response model. Events, which can be anything from a user action (like clicking a button) to a change in the system (such as an update to a database), trigger specific actions or workflows. This design allows applications to decouple components, making them more flexible, responsive, and easier to scale.
In an EDA, there are three main components:
Producers – These generate events. For example, a sensor generating temperature data or a user updating a file.
Event Routers – These are responsible for routing events to the appropriate consumers.
Consumers – These are services or systems that react to the events and process them.
AWS Lambda fits perfectly into this model by allowing the creation of stateless functions that execute code in response to events, without requiring the overhead of managing infrastructure.
Why AWS Lambda?
Lambda is designed to handle a wide variety of events from different AWS services, including S3, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, API Gateway, and many others. This ability to integrate with multiple services makes Lambda an essential tool in building a robust event-driven system.
Here are some of the key advantages of using AWS Lambda in an event-driven architecture:
Scalability: Lambda automatically scales the number of instances to match the rate of incoming events, handling thousands of concurrent executions without any intervention.
Cost Efficiency: You only pay for the compute time that your code actually uses, making Lambda highly cost-efficient, especially for systems with unpredictable workloads.
High Availability: AWS Lambda runs your code across multiple availability zones, ensuring that your functions are available even in the event of failure in one region.
Automatic Event Triggering: Lambda can automatically trigger in response to events from dozens of AWS services, making it easy to connect components and build a distributed, event-driven system.
Building an Event-Driven Architecture with AWS Lambda
Let’s walk through the steps of building an event-driven architecture using AWS Lambda, with an example of processing real-time file uploads.
1. Event Source: Amazon S3
In this example, the event that triggers the Lambda function will be the upload of a file to an Amazon S3 bucket. When a file is uploaded, S3 generates an event that can trigger a Lambda function to perform any processing required.
2. Lambda Function: Processing the File
Once the file is uploaded, the Lambda function is invoked. This function could perform tasks such as:
Validating the file format
Processing the contents (e.g., converting a file format or extracting metadata)
Storing results in a database or triggering other workflows
For example, if the uploaded file is an image, the Lambda function could generate thumbnails and store them in another S3 bucket.
3. Event Routing: Amazon SNS/SQS
Once the Lambda function processes the file, it can send a notification or trigger further processing. For instance, it might publish a message to Amazon SNS to notify downstream systems or forward a message to an SQS queue for another service to pick up and process asynchronously.
4. Chaining Lambda Functions: Step Functions
For more complex workflows, AWS Step Functions can be used to orchestrate multiple Lambda functions in a sequence. For instance, you might have one function for validating the file, another for processing it, and a final one for notifying other services.
Common Use Cases for Lambda in Event-Driven Architectures
AWS Lambda's flexibility and scalability make it a popular choice for a wide variety of use cases in event-driven architectures. Some common scenarios include:
Real-Time Data Processing: Whether it's logs, clickstreams, or IoT sensor data, Lambda can process data streams in real-time from services like Amazon Kinesis or DynamoDB Streams.
Automating Workflows: Lambda can automate processes such as responding to changes in an S3 bucket, scaling resources based on usage patterns, or orchestrating complex data pipelines.
Serverless APIs: By combining AWS API Gateway and Lambda, developers can build fully serverless APIs that react to HTTP requests, scale automatically, and are highly cost-effective.
Security and Monitoring: Lambda can respond to security events, such as analyzing CloudTrail logs in real-time for suspicious activity or automatically applying patches to resources in response to vulnerability reports.
Best Practices for Using AWS Lambda in Event-Driven Architectures
To make the most out of AWS Lambda in an event-driven architecture, consider these best practices:
Optimize Cold Starts: Cold starts can impact performance, especially for functions that aren’t frequently triggered. Use provisioned concurrency to keep functions "warm" when latency is critical.
Implement Idempotency: Since events may sometimes be delivered multiple times, ensure that your Lambda functions can handle duplicate invocations without causing errors or inconsistencies.
Monitor and Log: Use AWS CloudWatch Logs and X-Ray to monitor the performance of your Lambda functions, track events, and troubleshoot issues in real-time.
Error Handling and Retries: Set up proper error handling and retries for Lambda functions, especially when integrating with services like SQS or Kinesis that may require reprocessing of failed events.
Security: Apply the principle of least privilege by ensuring that Lambda functions only have access to the resources they need. Use AWS IAM roles carefully to define access permissions.
Conclusion
Event-driven architectures represent the future of cloud-native application development, and AWS Lambda is at the forefront of this paradigm shift. By leveraging Lambda’s ability to respond to events from a variety of sources, you can build scalable, flexible, and resilient systems that are both cost-effective and easy to maintain. Whether you’re processing real-time data streams, automating workflows, or building a serverless API, AWS Lambda is a powerful tool that can streamline and enhance your event-driven architecture.

Introducing Resource Control Policies In AWS Organizations

AWS Organizations are introducing resource control policies (RCPs), a new kind of authorization policy.
Resource control policies (RCPs)
One kind of organizational policy that you may use to govern access within your company is resource control policies (RCPs). RCPs give you central authority over the highest level of permissions that your organization’s resources can have. RCPs assist you in making sure the resources in your accounts adhere to the access control policies of your company. Only in an organization with all functionalities enabled are RCPs accessible. If your company has merely activated the consolidated billing functionality, RCPs are not accessible.
Resource control policies are not enough on their own to provide your organization’s resources permissions. An RCP does not issue permissions. An RCP establishes restrictions, or a permissions guardrail, on what an identity may do with resources within your company. To truly provide permissions, the administrator still needs to apply resource-based policies to the resources in your accounts or identity-based policies to IAM users or roles.
What is permitted by identity-based and resource-based policies and what is permitted by resource control policies and service control policies (SCPs) logically intersect to form effective permissions.
The resources of the following AWS services are covered by RCPs:
Amazon S3
AWS Security Token Service
AWS Key Management Service
Amazon SQS
AWS Secrets Manager
Evaluating RCPs’ effects
AWS strongly advises against attaching RCPs to your organization’s root without fully evaluating how the policy affects the resources in your accounts. Attaching resource control policies to individual test accounts is a good place to start. You may then move them up to OUs lower in the hierarchy and, if necessary, work your way up through the organization level. Examining AWS CloudTrail logs for Access Denied problems is one method of assessing impact.
Maximum RCP size
Your RCP’s characters all contribute to its maximum size. This guide’s examples demonstrate how to format resource control policies with additional white space to make them easier to read. However, you can remove any white space, including space characters and line breaks outside of quote marks, to conserve space if your insurance size is getting close to the maximum size.
Attaching RCPs to various organizational levels
RCPs can be directly attached to the organization root, OUs, or individual accounts.
RCP’s impact on permissions
One kind of AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policy is called an RCP. Resource-based policies are the ones with which they are most closely associated. But permissions are never granted by an RCP. Rather, RCPs are access controls that outline the highest level of authorization that can be granted to resources within your company. Refer to the IAM User Guide’s Policy evaluation logic for further details.
Resources for a subset of AWS services are covered by RCPs.
Only resources handled by accounts affiliated with the organization to which the RCPs have been assigned are impacted. Resources from accounts outside the company are unaffected. Take, for instance, an Amazon S3 bucket that belongs to Account A within a company. Users from Account B outside the company are granted access under the bucket policy, which is a resource-based policy. An RCP is assigned to Account A. Even when users access the S3 bucket in Account A from Account B, that RCP is still in effect. However, when users in Account A access resources in Account B, that RCP is not applicable.
Permissions for resources in member accounts are limited by an RCP. Only the permissions granted by each parent above it are available to any resource in an account. Even if the resource owner attaches a resource-based policy that grants any user full access, a resource in the impacted account does not have that permission if it is blocked at any level above the account.
The resources that are approved as part of an operation request are covered by RCPs. The “Resource type” column in the Action table in the Service Authorization Reference contains these resources. The resource control policies of the caller main account are used if the “Resource type” field contains no resources. For instance, the object resource is authorized by s3:GetObject. Every time a GetObject request is made, the requesting principal’s ability to invoke the GetObject operation is assessed using the relevant RCP. An RCP that has been linked to an account, an organizational unit (OU), or the root of the company that controls the resource being accessed is said to be applicable.
Only the resources in the organization’s member accounts are impacted by RCPs. The management account’s resources are unaffected by them. Nevertheless, this also applies to member accounts that have been assigned administrators.
The RCP is incorporated into the policy evaluation logic to decide whether to grant or deny a principal access to a resource within an account that has an attached RCP (a resource with an applicable RCP).
Regardless of whether the principals are affiliated with the same organizations or not, RCPs affect the effective permissions of principals attempting to access resources in a member account with an appropriate RCP. Root users are included in this. Because RCPs do not apply to calls made by service-linked roles, the exception is when the principals are service-linked roles. RCPs cannot limit service-linked responsibilities, which allow AWS services to carry out essential tasks on your behalf.
Permissions must still be granted to users and roles using the proper IAM permission policies, such as resource-based and identity-based policies. Even if an applicable RCP permits all services, all actions, and all resources, a user or role lacking any IAM permission policies is not granted access.
Resources and entities that are not subject to RCP restrictions
Resource control policies cannot be used to limit the following:
Any modification to the management account’s resources.
No service-linked role’s effective permissions are impacted by RCPs. One special kind of IAM role is a service-linked role, which is directly connected to an AWS service and has all the permissions the service needs to make calls to other AWS services on your behalf. RCPs cannot limit the permissions of service-linked roles. Additionally, resource control policies have no effect on AWS services’ capacity to take on a service-linked role; in other words, they have no effect on the trust policy of the service-linked role.
AWS managed keys for AWS Key Management Service are exempt from RCPs. An AWS service creates, maintains, and uses AWS managed keys on your behalf. Their permissions cannot be altered or managed by you.

The hardened steel blades reduce vibration while trimming, making it easier to navigate through thicker branches. What you'll love most about this product is its endless runtime – no need to worry about batteries running out of juice mid-trim. One thing you might not like is the cord retention system, which can be a bit finicky at times. Additionally, the 3.0 amp motor may not be as powerful as some other models on the market. However, for its intended use – trimming small hedges and shrubs – it's more than sufficient. Pros Lightweight and compact design Reduced fatigue with built-in T-handle and full-length trigger Dual-action blade for reduced vibration Endless runtime with corded electric power Cons Cord retention system can be finicky 3.0 amp motor may not be as powerful as other models CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON BLACK+DECKER 18-Inch Electric Hedge Trimmer Some hedge trimmers can be bulky and unwieldy, making it difficult to maneuver them around your yard. And the built-in cord retention system ensures that you won't accidentally unplug the trimmer while working. One thing we don't like about this product is that it's not suitable for larger hedges or thicker branches. The 5/8 inch cutting capacity
