A huge ancient city has been found in the Amazon, hidden for thousands of years by lush vegetation.
The discovery changes what we know about the history of people living in the Amazon.
The houses and plazas in the Upano area in eastern Ecuador were connected by an astounding network of roads and canals.
The area lies in the shadow of a volcano that created rich local soils but also may have led to the destruction of the society.
While we knew about cities in the highlands of South America, like Machu Picchu in Peru, it was believed that people only lived nomadically or in tiny settlements in the Amazon.
"This is older than any other site we know in the Amazon. We have a Eurocentric view of civilisation, but this shows we have to change our idea about what is culture and civilisation," says Prof Stephen Rostain, director of investigation at the National Centre for Scientific Research in France, who led the research.
"It changes the way we see Amazonian cultures. Most people picture small groups, probably naked, living in huts and clearing land - this shows ancient people lived in complicated urban societies," says co-author Antoine Dorison.
The city was built around 2,500 years ago, and people lived there for up to 1,000 years, according to archaeologists.
It is difficult to accurately estimate how many people lived there at any one time, but scientists say it is certainly in the 10,000s if not 100,000s.
The archaeologists combined ground excavations with a survey of a 300 sq km (116 sq mile) area using laser sensors flown on a plane that could identify remains of the city beneath the dense plants and trees.
—
"The road network is very sophisticated. It extends over a vast distance, everything is connected. And there are right angles, which is very impressive," he says, explaining that it is much harder to build a straight road than one that fits in with the landscape.
The scientists also identified causeways with ditches on either side which they believe were canals that helped manage the abundant water in the region.
There were signs of threats to the cities - some ditches blocked entrances to the settlements, and may be evidence of threats from nearby people.
Researchers first found evidence of a city in the 1970s, but this is the first time a comprehensive survey has been completed, after 25 years of research.
It reveals a large, complex society that appears to be even bigger than the well-known Mayan societies in Mexico and Central America.
—
Some of the findings are "unique" for South America, he explains, pointing to the octagonal and rectangular platforms arranged together.
The societies were clearly well-organised and interconnected, he says, highlighting the long sunken roads between settlements.
Not a huge amount is known about the people who lived there and what their societies were like.
Pits and hearths were found in the platforms, as well as jars, stones to grind plants and burnt seeds.
—
Prof Rostain says he was warned against this research at the start of his career because scientists believed no ancient groups had lived in the Amazon.

"wow wildfire air in my house sucks to breathe" -so true bestie.
This is a diy air purifier, haven't tried this myself so i can't speak for its effectiveness, but a quick Google search told me that diy corsi-rosenthal boxes are a thing.
Alternatively, if it's affordable and accessible, this is the air purifier model I got (using amazon link just cuz that's the easiest for me to pinpoint which model it was). It's good for allergens and dust too.
If you're shopping for an air purifier, or any filters, I heard to make sure you get the TRUE HEPA filters, not just HEPA. My teacher suffered from intense allergies and lung sensitivities so they had to get the right air purifier for him, and he let me know that there's a difference between HEPA and True HEPA -- he recommends True HEPA. But after doing a bit more digging, there's some discussion whether "True" HEPA is an actual improvement or just a marketing gimmick. So researching what works and is accessible for you is the way to go.
When circulating the air, make sure your windows are closed so that you don't draw more smokey air from outside.
From my experience, air purifiers tend to make the air very dry. If you have a humidifier, don't use it and the purifier at the same time, which makes both of them less effective. Instead, rotate their usage so that they run one at a time.
At the end of the day, do make sure you do your own research, but I hope this at least helps a bit
#take all this with a grain of salt in not an air expert haha#but it's frikn smokey again today#so i thought id share cuz this suuuuucks#important#wildfire#air purifier

Human activity and drought ‘degrading more than a third of Amazon rainforest’
Fires, land conversion, logging and water shortages have weakened resilience of 2.5m sq km of forest, says study
Human activity and drought may have degraded more than a third of the Amazon rainforest, double the previous estimate, according to a study that heightens concerns that the globally important ecosystem is slipping towards a point of no return.
Fires, land conversion, logging and water shortages, have weakened the resilience of up to 2.5m sq km of the forest, an area 10 times the size of the UK. This area is now drier, more flammable and more vulnerable than before, prompting the authors to warn of “megafires” in the future.
Between 5.5% and 38% of what is left of the world’s biggest tropical forest is also less able to regulate the climate, generate rainfall, store carbon, provide a habitat to other species, offer a livelihood to local people, and sustain itself as a viable ecosystem, the paper observes.
This degradation is on top of the 17% of the original forest that has been completely cleared over the past half century with Brazil having pushed back its agricultural and mining frontiers to satisfy the demands of an increasingly wealthy, more populous and high-consuming world.

Excerpt:
“Why does anything pertaining to you have to come with extra baggage?” Uncle Damon said. His dominant pack power surged, affecting the others nearby and making them restless.
The air crackled with his energy. I held my ground. His words stung, but he’d never hear me say it. I’d had lots of practice over the years keeping my hurt from showing, but at this moment, I lashed out with a barb of my own.
“I’m just lucky that way. Kind of like you.” I tapped the desk with my fingertips, knowing he hated it and narrowed my eyes at him.
He sure as hell had his own baggage when it came to relationships and pack bonds, especially when it came to anything with my mother.
“If the two of you are done poking at one another, I’d like to move on to the pertinent issue of the cursed map,” Sebastian said. He stood a good foot away from his desk and peered down at the map as if it might explode.
Everyone had a hands-off approach to the map after I’d blurted out that it was cursed.
“It won’t curse you just by touching it,” I said. “At least, not from what Gwenn or I could tell. It has a hidden layer that will attack you if you try to force it out in the open.”
“That’s just great,” Mutther said. “I suppose you found out firsthand?”
“Not me. Gwenn did. I was the innocent bystander.”
“Right. How innocent?” Nick said. He moved to Mutther’s side and viewed the map from farther away. Neither of them was taking any chances.
Not that I blamed them. They had suffered from being too near me in the past. Mutther was still rebuilding his bar.

Bezos for Charity
https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/14/business/jeff-bezos-charity/index.html
Interesting that he will do this; a lot of charities will benefit eventually.
What I would like to see him do, is invest in markets that have low returns but significant social or environmental benefits.
For instance 1: invest in Rural EV charging stations.
For instance 2: invest in affordable rental housing.
A major factor in EV adoption is availability of EV chargers. These chargers are readily available in municipalities (local fred myers has 8 of them installed). what is needed is to replace Gas stations with EV charging stations outside of municipalities... a national charging network would actually help Amazon delivery transition to EV. Nothing wrong with making money while making the world a better place.
Affordable rental housing is usually associate with “subsided” or “low income” housing projects. there is actually a bigger need: affordable housing for people that dont need subsidies. Somebody working full time at more than minimum wage should be able to afford non-subsided accommodation. In a lot of cities that is not the case. So, instead of giving money to charities to subsidize rentals, why not build rentals that will be affordable for those working at minimum wage? I dont know why this supply/demand gap in housing exists, but it does and it is getting worse. Need to build 700 sq ft apartments at $100 per sq ft. At this cost, apartments can be rented for $300 / month. Doesnt need to be fancy, just safe.

Seascape: The State of Our Oceans! The Hidden Underwater Forests That Could Help Tackle The Climate Crisis
Kelp absorbs carbon dioxide and has high nutritional value, but it is under threat from rising temperatures, pollution and invasive species
— By Lucy Sherriff in Los Angeles
Bubbles stream furiously behind Frank Hurd as he gently parts the curtains of giant kelp. Green and gold ribbons reach upwards through the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean towards the sun.
Hurd, a marine biologist with environmental organisation the Nature Conservancy, is diving in a kelp forest off Anacapa Island, one of the protected rocky volcanic islets that form the Channel Islands national park, an archipelago off the coast of southern California.
This thick, healthy kelp – a type of seaweed – forms a small part of underwater forests that blanket the coastline of nearly every continent. Some are relatively well-studied, including the Great African Sea Forest, a rich stretch of giant bamboo kelp spreading north from Cape Town to the Namibian coastline that was the setting for the film My Octopus Teacher; and the Great Southern Reef, a giant kelp forest hugging Australia’s southern coastline. But many more of these forests are unnamed and unknown – hidden underwater.

Despite being one of the fastest growing plants on Earth, kelp has historically been difficult to map because of the difficulties of measuring ocean depths with satellites. However, research published in September found that seaweed forests are far more extensive than previously realised.
An international group of scientists from eight countries, led by Dr Albert Pessarrodona from the University of Western Australia, manually sifted through hundreds of studies – including local plant data records, online repositories and citizen science initiatives – to model the global distribution of ocean forests. They found that underwater forests cover between 6m and 7.2m sq km – an area comparable to the Amazon rainforest basin and twice the size of India.

Seaweed forests can act as a vital buffer against the climate crisis, absorbing carbon dioxide from seawater and the atmosphere. Ocean forests may store as much carbon as the Amazon rainforest, according to one analysis.
Yet there is still a sizeable gap in understanding of seaweed’s long-term ability to sequester carbon, because it lacks a root system to lock the carbon into the ground, unlike other marine plants such as mangroves and seagrass. Whether carbon stays locked up also depends on what happens to the seaweed, and there is still scientific debate on how effective it is at storing the element.
Kelp provides food and shelter for fish, marine animals and birds. Photograph: Brandon Cole Images/Shutterstock
Marine ecologist Dr Karen Filbee-Dexter, one of the study’s 10 authors, said the research was a “major step forward” in understanding the potential role that seaweed can play in mitigating climate breakdown, “because it calculates the productivity – growth and carbon uptake – of the largest marine vegetated ecosystem”. It can also help estimate the carbon-sink potential of the world’s marine forests, she added.
Kelp, the largest seaweed species, able to grow tens of metres high, also plays a vital role in marine ecosystems, providing food and shelter for fish, other marine animals and birds.
In Australia, native kelp is home to the weedy seadragon – a purple-hued creature with leaf-like appendages that look like kelp fronds – which only lives along the country’s coastline. Kelp forests along North America’s Pacific coast provide vital habitats for southern sea otters. In addition, the mighty grey whale uses kelp forests as a haven from predatory killer whales and as vital feeding grounds for their young during their migration to Alaska waters from Baja California in Mexico.

Underwater forests could also have a role in efforts to alleviate the world’s food security crisis, thanks to their rapid growth.
The scientists examined hundreds of individual studies from around the world where seaweed growth had been measured by scuba divers. “We found ocean forests are more productive than many intensely farmed crops such as wheat, rice and corn,” the study noted. It defined productivity in terms of how much biomass – the fronds, stipes and holdfasts of the seaweed – was produced by crops and seaweed.
On average, ocean forests in temperate regions, such as Australia’s southern coast, produced between two and 11 times more biomass by area than intensely farmed crops, a productivity that could be harnessed for the food system.
“If Harvested Properly, Seaweeds Have The Potential To Be A Very Sustainable And Nutrient-dense Food Source” — Amanda Swinimer
Seaweed ecologist Dr Sophie Steinhagen inspects the crop at the seafarm in the Koster archipelago in Sweden.
Seaweed has been mass-consumed in Asia for centuries, and now western markets are catching on, albeit on a small scale, with more European and North American companies manufacturing seaweed products for human consumption. The Cornish Seaweed Company has a seaweed salad range; Marks & Spencer has a “coconut seaweed crunch” snack, and there are numerous lines of kelp burgers.
“Although there is evidence of seaweed being consumed as food 14,500 years ago, it has not been a part of the diet for large swaths of the world’s population,” says marine biologist Amanda Swinimer, who has been wild harvesting seaweed for decades through her company, Dakini Tidal Wilds.
However, she adds, as food security becomes more of an issue, “people are looking for other sources of nutritious food. If harvested properly, seaweeds have the potential to be a very sustainable and nutrient-dense food source.” Seaweed is also being used as animal feed, in place of corn and soya beans, thanks to its high nutritional value.
Seaweed can be a nutritious source of food if harvested properly. Photograph: M&S
Yet these underwater forests face multiple threats, including rising sea temperatures, pollution and invasive species. Along the northern California coast, kelp has declined by more than 95% over the past several years, decimated by sea urchins – whose population has exploded as vast numbers of starfish, their main predators, have been killed by a wasting disease linked to warming waters.
The Great Southern Reef along Australia’s coastline, and forests in the north-west Atlantic, along the coasts of Maine, Canada and Greenland, are also showing concerning signs of decline.
Seaweed forests are often overlooked and less studied compared with coral reefs, making it difficult to understand how they are changing. “Most of the world’s seaweed forests are not even mapped, much less monitored,” says Filbee-Dexter. While corals are found in warm, calm and easily accessible areas, making them fairly easy to study, kelp is in cold waters on some of the choppiest, roughest coasts in the world.
Seaweed farming in Sweden could be a vital component of the shift away from eating meat for protein.
Filbee-Dexter believes that the more scientists understand about these vital but fragile marine ecosystems, the easier it will be to help them survive. “I hope that more awareness about these forests will lead to more protection and restoration.”
In California, Hurd continues to dive among the kelp forests, monitoring their progress and hoping their decline can be stemmed. “The loss of these incredibly productive ecosystems is devastating for both nature and people,” he says. However, as science continues to develop smarter technologies to track kelp, such as drones, satellites and AI, he remains hopeful that research can shed light on the role of kelp in fighting climate breakdown.
“The one thing that kelp in particular should never be underestimated for is the productivity and biodiversity it supports around the world. It should be protected and restored with a great sense of urgency.”

More and more places are unfortunately becoming fabric deserts where the only options people have are Joanne and hobby lobby because they choked out any of the smaller businesses.
But the even shittier thing about that, is now those big companies are even threatening to go under. Fabric.com, which was widely the best option to get good fabrics all over the country, was unfortunately bought by Amazon, who then eventually closed out, taking that option out of many hands. And now there are rumors of Joanne going completely out of business too.
There is hope that when the big chain stores are gone, there will be a resurgence of smaller businesses with more quality goods again, but that will still take years.
I don't know of to many good stores for good fabrics any more, but here are a for if anyone is near any of them
https://www.fabricplacebasement.com/
Has two locations, one in Natick MA, and one in Alexandria VA
These two are in Chicago IL
Two locations, one in Brooklyn Park MN, and one in Burnsville MN
I feel like something that doesnt get talked about enough is how fast fashion is coming to hobbies as well. Sure, you can sew, knit, and crochet something better than youd buy in store, but good luck finding quality materials
Want a fabric that doesnt fray from being gently caressed? Want yarn thats not 100% plastic and splits if you touch it wrong? Good luck finding that if you dont have a genuinely good crafts store near you.
Go on any thread where people are trying to figure out where to buy fabric. 50% of it is people saying big stores are servicable, online stores work, or the like, and the other 50% are talking about how bad the quality is or how the quality of a website dropped because it was bought out
Were running into a problem where fast fashiob is so integrated into society that even the ability to make your own, comfortable and long lasting, clothes is being threatened by capitalism
#fabric#sewing#shamelessly plugging my work as one of the few good places left to get quality fabric#blarg

What I love most about this product is its compact and lightweight design, making it easy to maneuver and reducing fatigue during extended use. One downside to note is that the battery and charger must be purchased separately, which may add to the overall cost. Additionally, some users may find the blade length to be a bit short for their needs. Pros: Powerful high-output motor for efficient cutting Compact and lightweight design for reduced fatigue Part of the 20V max system for easy battery swapping Cons: Battery and charger must be purchased separately Blade length may be too short for some users CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON BLACK+DECKER 16-Inch Electric Hedge Trimmer Even if you're not an avid gardener, keeping your hedges and shrubs well-manicured can make a huge difference in your yard's curb appeal. Hedge trimming can be a tedious task, but the BLACK+DECKER's dual-action blade makes it a breeze. The hardened steel blades reduce vibration while trimming, making it easier to navigate through thicker branches. What you'll love most about this product is its endless runtime – no need to worry about batteries running out of juice mid-trim. One thing you might not like is the cord retention system, which can be a bit finicky at times. Additionally, the 3.0 amp motor may not be as powerful as some other models on the market. However, for its intended use – trimming small hedges and shrubs – it's more than sufficient. Pros Lightweight and compact design Reduced fatigue with built-in T-handle and full-length trigger Dual-action blade for reduced vibration Endless runtime with corded electric power Cons Cord retention system can be finicky 3.0 amp motor may not be as powerful as other models CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON BLACK+DECKER 18-Inch Electric Hedge Trimmer Some hedge trimmers can be bulky and unwieldy, making it difficult to maneuver them around your yard. Weighing in at just 4.5 pounds, it's lightweight and easy to handle, making it perfect for small to medium-sized hedges and shrubs. Another feature that sets this trimmer apart is its bulk-free design. The built-in wrap-around handle and full-length trigger make it easy to grip and maneuver, reducing fatigue and strain on your hands and arms. This means you can work for longer periods without feeling exhausted. Inch for inch, the BLACK+DECKER 18-Inch Electric Hedge Trimmer is one of the most effective trimmers we've tested. The hardened steel dual-action blade reduces vibration while trimming, making it easier to get a clean cut. And with its corded electric power, you don't have to worry about running out of battery in the middle of a job. What we love most about this product is its ease of use. The full-length trigger makes it easy to operate with multiple fingers, reducing fatigue and strain. And the built-in cord retention system ensures that you won't accidentally unplug the trimmer while working. One thing we don't like about this product is that it's not suitable for larger hedges or thicker branches. The 5/8 inch cutting capacity
is relatively small, so if you have a lot of heavy-duty trimming to do, this might not be the best choice. CellProfiler And Cell Painting Batch(CPB) In Drug Discovery
Cell Painting
Enhancing Drug Discovery with high-throughput AWS Cell Painting. Are you having trouble processing cell images? Let’s see how AWS’s Cell Painting Batch offering has revolutionized cell analysis for life sciences clients.
Introduction
The analysis of microscope-captured cell pictures is a key component in the area of drug development. To comprehend cellular activities and phenotypes, a novel method for high-content screening called “Cell Painting” has surfaced. Prominent biopharma businesses have begun using technologies like the Broad Institute’s CellProfiler software, which is designed for cell profiling.
On the other hand, a variety of imaging methods and exponential data expansion provide formidable obstacles. Here, they will discover how AWS has been used by life sciences clients to create a distributed, scalable, and effective cell analysis system.
Current Circumstance
Scalable processing and storage are needed for cell painting operations in order to support big file sizes and high-throughput picture analysis. These days, scientists employ open-source tools such as CellProfiler, but to run automated pipelines without worrying about infrastructure maintenance, they need scalable infrastructure.
In addition to handling massive amounts of data on microscopic images and infrastructure provisioning, scientists are attempting to conduct scientific research. It is necessary for researchers to work together safely and productively across labs using user-friendly tools. The cornerstone of research is scientific reproducibility, which requires scientists to duplicate other people’s discoveries when publishing in highly regarded publications or even examining data from their own labs.
CellProfiler software
Obstacles
Customers in the life sciences sector encountered the following difficulties while using stand-alone instances of technologies such as CellProfiler software:
Difficulties in adjusting to workload fluctuations.
Problems with productivity in intricate, time-consuming tasks.
Problems in teamwork across teams located around the company.
Battles to fulfill the need for activities requiring a lot of computing.
Cluster capacity problems often result in unfinished work, delays, and inefficiencies.
The lack of a centralized data hub results in problems with data access.
Cellprofiler Pipeline
Solution Overview
AWS solution architects collaborated with life sciences clients to create a novel solution known as Cell Painting Batch (CPB) in order to solve these issues. CellProfiler Pipelines are operated on AWS in a scalable and distributed architecture by CPB using the Broad Institute’s CellProfiler image. With CPB, researchers may analyze massive amounts of images without having to worry about the intricate details of infrastructure management. Furthermore, the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK), which simplifies infrastructure deployment and management, is used in the construction of the CPB solution.
The whole procedure is automated; upon uploading a picture, an Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) message is issued that starts the image processing and ends with the storing of the results. This gives researchers a scalable, automated, and effective way to handle large-scale image processing requirements.Image credit to AWS
This figure illustrates how to dump photos from microscopes into an Amazon S3 bucket. AWS Lambda is triggered by user SQS messages. Lambda submits AWS Batch tasks utilizing container images from the Amazon Elastic Container Registry. Photos are processed using AWS Batch, and the results are sent to Amazon S3 for analysis.
Workflow
The goal of the Cell Painting Batch (CPB) solution on AWS is to simplify the intricate process of processing cell images so that researchers may concentrate on what really counts extrapolating meaning from the data. This is a detailed explanation of how the CPB solution works:
Images are obtained by researchers using microscopes or other means.
Then, in order to serve as an image repository, these photos are uploaded to a specific Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) bucket.
After storing the photos, researchers send a message to Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) specifying the location of the images and the CellProfiler pipeline they want to use. In essence, this message is a request for image processing that is delivered to the SQS service.
An automated AWS Lambda function is launched upon receiving a SQS message. The main responsibility of this function is to start the AWS Batch job for the specific image processing request.
Amazon Batch assesses the needs of the task. AWS Batch dynamically provisioned the required Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances based on the job.
It retrieves the designated container image that is kept in the Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR). This container runs the specified CellProfiler pipeline inside AWS Batch. The integration of Amazon FSx for Lustre with the S3 bucket guarantees that containers may access data quickly.
The picture is processed by the CellProfiler program within the container using a predetermined pipeline. This may include doing image processing operations such as feature extraction and segmentation.
Following CellProfiler post-processing, the outcomes are stored once again to the assigned S3 bucket at the address mentioned in the SQS message.
Scholars use the S3 bucket to get and examine data for their investigations.
Because the workflow is automated, the solution will begin analyzing images and storing the findings as soon as a picture is uploaded and a SQS message is issued. This gives researchers a scalable, automated, and effective way to handle large-scale image processing requirements.
Safety
For cell painting datasets and workflows, AWS’s Cell Painting Batch (CPB) provides a strong security architecture. The solution offers top-notch data safety with encrypted data storage at rest and in transit, controlled access via AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), and improved network security via an isolated VPC. Furthermore, the security posture is strengthened by ongoing monitoring using security technologies like Amazon Cloud Watch.
It is advisable to implement additional mitigations, such as version control for system configurations, strong authentication with multi-factor authentication (MFA), protection against excessive resource usage with Amazon Cloud Watch and AWS Service Quotas, cost monitoring with AWS Budgets, and container scanning with Amazon Inspector, in order to further strengthen security.
Life Sciences Customer Success Stories
Customers in the biological sciences have changed drastically after switching to CPB. This streamlined processing pipelines, sped up photo processing, and fostered collaboration. The system’s built-in scalability can manage larger datasets to hasten medication development, making these enterprises future-proof.
Customizing the Solution
CPB may be integrated with other AWS services due to its modularity. Options include AWS Step Functions for efficient process orchestration, Amazon AppStream for browser-based access to scientific equipment, AWS Service Catalog for self-service installs, and Amazon SageMaker for machine learning workloads. Github code has a parameters file for instance class, timeout duration, and other tweaks.
In summary
The cell painting batch approach may boost researcher productivity by eliminating infrastructure management. This method allows scalable and fast image analysis, speeding therapy development. It also lets researchers self-manage processing and distribution, reducing infrastructure administration needs.
The AWS CPB solution has transformed biopharmaceutical cell image processing and helped life sciences companies. A unique approach that combines scalability, automation, and efficiency allows life sciences organizations to easily handle large cell imaging workloads and accelerate drug development.

After what felt like the geologic age of the Jurassic, I finally settled on a new smartwatch. But man, the odyssey of navigating that labyrinth of options nearly liquefied my brain into a puddle of overcooked eggs. I scoured all the big-name retailer sites, but half of those product pages looked like they were jammed with counterfeit junk pumped out of a Chinese warehouse staffed by iPods assembled from melted Croc shoes.
Everywhere I clicked, Huawei kept jamming its shiny new Watch Fit 3 in my face through ads. But then I'd see headlines about Western nations trying to ban the company. Clearly, there were geopolitical overtones I wasn't grasping. So I hit up YouTube University to earn my doctoral degree in Huawei Truthology from some amateur reviewer's unboxing video.
Turns out the Fit 3 is basically an Apple Watch rip-off, but at least it's cheaper than getting scammed by an Apple Genius into buying $600 worth of proprietary dongles. Except to even set this thing up, you can't just download the app through the Play Store like a normal human being. Nope, you have to pull some spy movie shit and use your phone to scan a QR code that appears on the watch's tiny screen to secretly download their shady APK file direct from Beijing.
Then it force-installs some 'Sister App' that starts dropping bloatware landmines all over your phone's operating system at random. Like, what the absolute.... hell? Yeah, ban those Communist tentacle-code overlords from the free world of wearable tech. Where's the Change.org petition to digitally rendition Huawei into a bottomless pit?
The more reputable Withings brand fell out of contention because they've gone full MailChimp rapscallion by holding all your health data for ransom through mandatory subscriptions. Sorry, but I don't need wireless EKG readings psyching me out about having my mom's AFIB condition when actual cardiologists would just ignore that data anyway, according to Dr. Mike from whatever medical TikTok channel he's on.
I just wanted something simple to track cycling, steps, elevation gained while I trekked up the Rocky Mountains, and phone notifications without having to pull out my actual phone like some Boomer with a belt-clipped Samsung Jitterbug. I don't need Dick Tracy video calling or sleep tracking to gaslight me about my night terrors.
In the end, after scrutinizing all the evidence like I was presenting it to 12 Angry Men, I ordered the Garmin Venu SQ 2. Could've saved a few bucks through one of Amazon's third-party sellers, but their listings always smell shadier than a truckstop urinal cake. This one guy claimed he had an "opened but never used" unit he bought "by accident as a gift" and was trying to unload it at a steep discount. Yeah, because stumbling into purchasing a £199 smartwatch by pure accident happens all the time, and there's definitely no chance it's a reboxed return or something he ripped off and is fencing on eBay.
No thanks, Slick Rick. I'll pay the premium to a legit retailer and pick it up from their storefront today after eviscerating the last few hours of my workday. Man, buying something simple shouldn't require a six-month term paper's worth of research, but I guess that's just Life in the 21st Century Hellscape we've made for ourselves.

Chimantá Massif
Summit in Venezuela
Elevation: 2,698 m
The Chimantá Massif is a highly fragmented complex of tepuis in Bolívar state, Venezuela. The massif comprises around 11 tepuis and has a total summit area of 615 km2 (237 sq mi) and an estimated slope area of 915 km2 (353 sq mi). It is divided in two by the Río Tírica, with the northern section being both larger and higher.
The massif is notable for its high species richness and for its varied habitat types. It reaches an elevation of 2,698 metres (8,852 ft) on its highest peak, Murey-tepui (also known as Eruoda-tepui). The massif is situated entirely within the bounds of Canaima National Park. It hosts extensive cave systems, including the world's largest known quartzite cave, Cueva Charles Brewer, named after discoverer Charles Brewer-Carías. The processes behind their speleogenesis are the subject of some debate. The isolated southern peaks of Angasima-tepui and Upuigma-tepui are sometimes considered part of the Chimantá Massif
What is Tepuis

A tepui, or tepuy, is a table-top mountain or mesa found in South America, especially in Venezuela and western Guyana. The word tepui means "house of the gods" in the native tongue of the Pemon, the indigenous people who inhabit the Gran Sabana.
Area: 50,675 km2 (19,566 sq mi)
Biome: tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests

Because tepuis stand high above the forest, Tepuis are home to some animal and plant species found nowhere else on Earth. About one-third of the vegetation found on the mountains is endemic. The tepuis host mammals on their lower slopes, including monkeys, jaguars, pumas, and sloths, and several bat species.
Venezuela’s Flat-Topped Mountains
Like many tepuis, Auyán contains extensive cave systems. In 2013, researchers discovered one of the longest quartzite cave systems in the world here. The Imawarì Yeuta caves contain three entrances, three rivers, and at least 22 kilometers (14 miles) of tunnels. Because they run through quartz sandstone, tepui caves are less susceptible to water erosion. They also form slowly—perhaps over tens of millions of years. Researchers have discovered new minerals and new species of bacteria and blind fish in other tepui caves across the region.

Hundreds of people marched in Bolivia’s highland, political capital La Paz to demand action against the fires, holding banners and placards saying “Bolivia in flames” and “For cleaner air stop burning.”
“Please realize what is really happening in the country, we have lost millions of hectares,” said Fernanda Negron, an animal rights activist in the protest. “Millions of animals have been burned to death.”
In Brazil, a drought that began last year has become the worst on record, according to national disaster monitoring agency Cemaden.
“In general, the 2023-2024 drought is the most intense, long-lasting in some regions and extensive in recent history, at least in the data since 1950,” said Ana Paula Cunha, a drought researcher with Cemaden.
The greatest number of fires this month is in Brazil and Bolivia, followed by Peru, Argentina and Paraguay, according to Inpe data. Unusually intense fires that hit Venezuela, Guyana and Colombia earlier in the year contributed to the record but have largely subsided.
Fire from deforestation in the Amazon create particularly intense smoke because of the density of the vegetation burning, Longo said.
“The sensation you get flying next to one of these plumes is like that of an atomic mushroom cloud,” said Longo of Inpe.
Roughly 9 million sq km (3.5 million sq miles) of South America have been covered in smoke at times, more than half of the continent, she said.
Sao Paulo, the most populous city in the Western Hemisphere, earlier this week had the worst air quality globally, higher than famous pollution hotspots like China and India, according to website IQAir.com. Bolivia’s capital of La Paz was similarly blanketed in smoke.
Exposure to the smoke will drive up the number of people seeking hospital treatment for respiratory issues and may cause thousands of premature deaths, Longo said.
Inhaling wildfire smoke contributes to an average 12,000 early deaths a year in South America, according to a 2023 study in the academic journal Environmental Research: Health.
