Wet Pet Food Market Will Hit Big Revenues In Future
The wet pet food market size is valued at USD 25.4 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to USD 31.7 billion by 2028, with a CAGR of 4.5% during the forecast period. In recent years, the pet industry has experienced notable expansion, offering a broad array of products ranging from specialized toys to cutting-edge grooming solutions. Among these offerings, wet pet food has gained popularity due to its high moisture content, which mirrors traditional stews and gravies. This not only enhances flavor but also supports hydration, a key factor in pet health. Additionally, wet pet food provides a rich nutritional profile, incorporating essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals, making it suitable for pets with specific dietary needs or health concerns.
Tumblr media
As consumers increasingly prioritize health, wet pet food has emerged as a popular choice to meet evolving nutritional demands. This growth is largely fueled by rising disposable incomes, the perception of pets as family members, and a growing understanding of how nutrition impacts overall pet well-being.
Wet Pet Food Market Trends
Here are some key trends in the Wet Pet Food Market:
Premiumization of Pet Food: Growing demand for high-quality ingredients and premium products is driving the wet pet food market, as pet owners seek healthier and more nutritious options for their pets.
Grain-Free and Natural Formulations: The rise in awareness about pet health has led to an increase in demand for grain-free and natural wet pet food, which avoids artificial ingredients, additives, and preservatives.
Humanization of Pets: Many pet owners treat pets as family members, leading to higher spending on wet pet food that mimics human food quality, including organic and gourmet options.
Focus on Pet Digestive Health: Digestive health has become a priority, with wet pet foods offering formulations that support gut health, improve digestion, and include probiotics.
Sustainability in Packaging: Brands are focusing on sustainable packaging solutions, such as recyclable or biodegradable packaging, to reduce their environmental footprint.
Growing Demand for Functional Ingredients: Ingredients that provide specific health benefits, such as joint health, skin and coat care, and immune system support, are becoming popular in wet pet food formulations.
Wet Pet Food Market Insights: Dogs Expected to Hold the Largest Share
Over the past few decades, dog adoption rates have seen a notable rise. Whether adopted from shelters or breeders, more dogs are becoming cherished members of households. This increase in dog ownership is attributed to various factors, including a greater awareness of the emotional and psychological benefits dogs offer to humans. Traditionally, developed nations like the US, Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands have been key markets for dog food, driven by the growing adoption of pets and higher spending on pet food products. However, in recent years, developing countries have also emerged as important markets for dog food. Rising pet adoptions, increased awareness of dog health, and the trend of humanizing pets have fueled this growth. Countries such as India, China, and Brazil now represent attractive markets for dog food, with large populations of stray dogs being adopted. According to data from PetSecure (Australia), nations like China, Japan, the Philippines, and India have some of the largest pet dog populations. Notably, India has the fastest-growing dog population globally.
Based on the distribution channel, online mode is anticipated to have the highest growth rate in the wet pet food market.
Online platforms are fueling the growth of the wet pet food market by overcoming the challenges of traditional shopping. The ease of browsing and purchasing online eliminates the need for physical store visits, offering greater accessibility. This convenience allows pet owners to explore a wider variety of wet pet food options and make more informed choices tailored to their pets’ specific needs. The global pandemic has significantly altered consumer behavior, accelerating a shift toward online shopping. E-commerce platforms saw a dramatic increase in demand as people sought safer ways to buy products. This trend extended to pet supplies, including wet pet food, as owners turned to online shopping for high-quality products while following safety guidelines. The rise in demand underscores the growing importance of online platforms in addressing changing consumer preferences, making them a key driver in the wet pet food market’s expansion.

hello! I wanted to ask, how does a plant based diet work for tipically carnivore animals? I've read often of plant based diets for cats for example, I struggle to think of foods they could eat
The foods that cats on a plant-based diet generally eat are generally formulated pet foods, similar to regular pet food, and it's available in both dry and wet variants.
As for how it works, it depends on who you ask. There undeniably are carnivorous animals who seem to be doing fine on a plant-based diet and there are a few studies monitoring them, though the sample sizes tend to be small and often don't account for things like age, breed, or longevity. There is more research suggesting it's safe for dogs than it is for cats, but again, I'd err on the side of caution.
More work needs to be done on this topic, to figure out a few key things like how plant-based diets interacts with existing health issues, if breed has any impact, life stage, nutrient absorption efficiency etc. Studies are still pretty thin on the ground but I hope the climate crisis pushes more funding in this direction, as the pet food industry is not an insignificant contributor, not to mention the cruelty involved.
Right now though, while it seems to work for some individuals, I don’t think we can truthfully say that there is no risk involved. I’ve read what I can but I’m also not any sort of expert on animal nutrition, that’s why I always recommend that people should follow the advice of their vet.

Cat Nutrition - An Off-Topic Post
I've worked in the pet food industry for the last 7 years and it always shocks me how little people know about the nutritional needs for their cats/ pets in general. A lot of people just follow what their parents did or whatever the vet or pet store recommends (often promoting their own brands). Here's a big blurb of everything you should know about feeding your fur beans. For those short on time here's the spark notes version: Kibble is really bad for cats and was really only made for human convenience and profit- it dehydrates them which is one of the main causes for kidney disease which affects 1 in 3 cats and is ridiculously high carb - 3-5x more than what they need. Even fancy feast or the lowest quality wet/canned food is better than the highest quality dry/kibble. While Raw can have it's downsides if fed improperly, there's lots of balanced brands that can make it easy and is really the best for them, it's what their bodies are made to eat! Picky cats: Add warm water to their food. Play with them before meal times. Find 4-5 different foods they like and rotate so they don't get bored. Do your own research! Find out what works best for you, don't blindly follow what vets tell you and what friends or family have been doing. Here's everything to know about Cat and their role in the Pet Food Industry:
1. Cat are desert animals! This means that they are made to be getting 80-90% of their moisture from their food! Most cats will only drink water from a bowl when they are severely dehydrated. This is why feeding wet food (canned) or raw is so much more important. 2. Kibble is a new invention for Human Convenience! Kibble has only been around for 67 years! The first kibble was invented in 1956. Back in the 40s during WWII there were sanctions put on the use of cans and metals, essentially removing the option of canned pet foods. This pushed companies to find an alternative, working with by products (left overs) from cereal companies they created a high-profit cheap food they could sell to customers that had a better shelf life. -How is Kibble made? Almost all kibble goes through a process called extrusion where the initial ingredients, meats, by-products and additives are processed under intense heat and pressure 4-5 times before they're cut to shape and sprayed with flavors and oils. This process removes nutrients, vitamins and pretty much everything from the original ingredients. Try cooking a high grade steak at max output on your oven 4-5 times and see if anything is really worth eating at that point. -Veterinary Diets In the late 60s, a generation after the invention of kibble, there became an increase in kidney and liver failures, prompting a French vet to create his own trademarked food - Royal Canin with Hill's Science Diet being created later in the US. (Fun fact, Hill's has actually trademarked the term "prescription diet" so that no other pet food brand is allowed to use it in their packaging.) 3. Cats vs. Dogs - What's the difference? While dogs are much more flexible in what they can eat, Cats are obligate carnivores. A Carnivore (Dogs) does well on meat based diets, while Obligate Carnivores (Cats) need a meat based diet in order to survive. Broken down in food- dogs ideally need 30% protein, 63% fat and 7% carb from their food cats need 53% protein, 35% fat and 12%. 4. Why does this matter and what does it mean for their food? Dry foods are primarily carbohydrates. 35-50% on average. This is 3-5x more than a cat needs in addition to the lack of protein, which is what keeps a cat functioning. Grains - or carbs can be extremely detrimental to a cats body: Carbohydrates turn into sugar in the body, meaning the more carbs a cat consumes, the more sugar, which increases their chances of getting diabetes. In the wild, most cats choose to avoid eating the intestines of their prey, where most of the grains and fibre are kept, indicating cats also use very little to no fibre in their diets. On top of that, the lack of moisture in kibble actually dehydrates cats, one of the primary reasons for kidney problems down the line, affecting 1 in 3 cats. 5. What do I feed my Cat? Feed wet or raw! At the end of the day, if your cat only eats fancy feast or whiskas, or if that's the only wet(canned) food you can afford, it's a huge step forward for their diets. These brands are going to be better than any of the highest quality dry foods you can find because it means they're getting the moisture and protein they need without the extra carb and salt content. Raw foods have come a long way. They aren't all the frozen patties or having to home cook the meal with all these added supplements. There's lots of complete brands out there in different formats that make it easy for everyone. Freeze-dried is a form of raw that you rehydrate and feed. Air-dried (most expensive) is fed like kibble, and is kind of a jerky texture. If you're on raw, or with any food, make sure to wash your hands with soap before and after feeding and I recommend getting your cat dewormed twice a year for precautionary actions. -Treats the common ones like greenies, tempations are all kibble like treats, filled with carbs and salt, that make them irresistible but also horrible for them. Single 1 ingredient treats are the best out there. Even a scrab of unseasoned chicken from dinner or salmon sashimi from a sushi night is a great alternative.
6. Reading the Label Once you get into canned foods, there's hundreds of options. Here's a few things that help me decide what's worth it and what to avoid. Starting from worst to best with the wording: "Flavor" ie - "Beef flavor Dog food" it doesn't even need a certain percentage of beef, as long as it's technically detected in the food. "With" ie - "Dinner with beef" - beef only has to be minimum 3% of the food. 25% rule - If the food has 25% or more of the main protein, it can be labelled as "Beef entree" or "lamb Dinner". If there's more than 1, they can be labelled together but must add up to 25% and be labelled in the order of their percentage. - ie "Lamb & Lamb Liver Entree" 95% rule - At least 95% of the food must be of the listed protein. "Chicken dog food" Often - those with a 95% label will proudly show it, while the others you'll have to read to notice. 7. Kitten vs. Adult vs. Senior food There's really only 4 categories a food can be put into - Gestation/Lactation (for Mama cats) Growth Maintenance All Life Stages "Senior food" does not have a category as there is no clear definition on a change of nutritional needs as a cat ages. While "Growth" is typically attributed to kittens, most wet foods will have kitten portioning as they are all life stages. The biggest difference is that kitten food is fattier and has some added nutrients needed for growth. These can also be found in any other canned food with the appropriate portioning. 8. Urinary Food There's a lot of misconceptions about this. Brands will advertise Urinary dry food or the vet line - Kidney food. But if it's dry, as we now know, it dehydrates them, furthering the damage to the kidneys, making it extremely counter intuitive. Any wet food will be better than a dry "urinary" food to help treat this issue, ideally a low phosphorous brand. - Weruva is the most popular and has a low phosphorous line as well. 9. Fish Fish is not a naturally occurring food for cats! Cats only started eating fish when fishing became prominent in human civilizations. Fish is the most common occurring allergy in cats! - some symptoms are constant itchiness, rashes, immediately throwing up, or butt dragging after a poop. I personally recommend avoiding fish in cat foods, especially Tuna, if it's bad for us in large quantities due to the toxic build up of chemicals and things like mercury, imagine what it does to them. 10. Pickiness and Meal Time Cats are notoriously picky or fussy or spoiled. This is because they have 4 stages of food preference that need to be just right. 1 - smell 2 - taste 3 - texture / consistency 4 - how it sits in their stomach
It's hard to find exactly what they want and unfortunately there's no shortcut. It's really just trial and error.
Hot tips: -Add warm water to their food - it's gross but cats like their food at prey body temperature, if it's cold to the touch for us, it's likely not that appealing for them either.
-Just like dogs, keeping a routine is incredibly important for cats. they're actually a lot more meticulous about routine than dogs are and will let you know exactly when breakfast and dinner time is. Leaving the food out makes it less appealing for them. If they don't eat breakfast, take the food away and they have to wait for dinner. Over time they'll eat until they're done during meal time.
-Play with them before food! Cats are hunters, their goal for survival is catch, kill, eat, sleep etc. Play with them near meal time, get them real worked up until they're exhausted, then put down food, they'll be much more likely to eat now that they're gotten all the hunting out of the way.
-I recommend having at least 4 or 5 different flavors or brands that your cat likes, to rotate through so they don't get bored and you don't end up at square 1 when they decide that one they like isn't good enough anymore.
Keep in mind: Beef, Lamb & Duck are often high in fat and should be used as a once in a while protein. Chicken & Turkey are the best proteins. Even if your cat doesn't like chicken from one brand, they could go nuts for one from a different brand or even the same brand with a different texture. Try them out and see, don't eliminate a whole protein so easily because of a few that get turned down.
I think that's a wrap. Food really makes a world of a difference for these guys, their whole world revolves around it and getting it right can mean years of a difference. - For reference, the average life expectancy for indoor cats is 15-20 years old! For the devils' advocates - yes there are cats that have lived long lives on the worst quality dry foods, but they're really the exceptions, same as people. There's definitely people who have lived to their 90s or older surviving off McDonalds or the equivalent, but that's not really the kind of quality of life or food you want to be giving your pet who is entirely dependent on your choices at the pet store. If you stuck around to the end, I appreciate you, and I'm glad there are other people out there who care just as much about their furry friends as I do. I'm more than willing to discuss any questions, even it it's not directly about their nutrition! Side note - some of the canned food brands I'm a big fan of: Feline Natural Rawz Tiki Cat Nature's Logic Identity Weruva/BFF

Nestbox culling for reasons other than too many babies or bad health would probably be unnecessary if only pet food companies would actually use rabbit in cat and dog food. Even if rabbits arent fatty enough to make a properly balanced diet for those species, there’s plenty of ways to add more fat to kibble or a wet food. Cant even get freaking mice in cat food because these companies are way too focused on making food sound appetizing to humans. Rabbits are definitely a more natural prey item for both species than freaking salmon or tuna or beef or pork.
Hmmm... no, I think it would still be necessary honestly. I mean, the folks who are nestbox culling are generally the small-scale show breeders and whatnot. Not to mention I would question the ethicallity of shipping a bunch of weanling rabbits to who knows where to be killed who knows how in order to be ground up into pet food. Plus, in order for it to be viable to be a significant ingredient in pet food, you'd need a lot of babies which... like I said, since it's mostly the little guys doing nestbox culling for markings and colors, that's just not really feasible.
That said, I absolutely do 100% agree that rabbit could and should be used more often in pet food. I think a big part of why they aren't, other than just because companies want to make things sound appetizing to humans, is because of exactly what kinds of chicken, salmon, tuna, beef, and pork are going into pet food. Even when they aren't specifying that it's 'by-products' of those species, the majority of pet food companies are taking in the stuff that isn't fit for human consumption for whatever reason. It wouldn't make a lot of economical or ecological sense necessarily to have these huge factory farms where the only thing the animals being raised there would be used for is pet food. In order to make a business with a mouse or rat based food for cats, you'd need to have millions of mice and rats - maybe even billions yearly - in order to make enough food assuming you want a lot of people to buy it. That's a lot of labor and money and energy and lives being put into something that only can be used by cats.
If more people in this country ate rabbit, if there was more of an industry for rabbit, it might be more common to see rabbit in pet food - not just because it would be more normalized for people, but also because there would just be more of it to be spared for pet food! In the meantime, rabbit will be one of the not-so-secret secrets to a raw whole-prey feeder's success.

The calfs used to babysit me while my dad was at work. They'd lick my arms (for the salt) and I'd pet them and study the whorls of fur on their heads. I would name them. The people who came to take them away (to raise and bring back or to keep and eat) brought us donuts. I tried to remember what their tag numbers were so that I could say hi to them again when they came back, but I never remembered for the whole year they were gone. I knew they were out there somewhere on the farm. They were all my friends.
Calfs shit the most disgusting mustard yellow shit, but they're babies so you can't blame them for being disgusting. I watched so many cows giving birth, but it was really boring. They'd always call my dad over when a calf was stuck and he'd have to help because he was good at it. I don't know if they always come out butt-first, or if only the risky births do because those were the only ones I saw, but that sounds kind of risky. Sometimes there was a stillborn lying to the side, waiting to be moved. Once I saw a wasp eating its eye.
The grownup cows were more skittish but they had beautiful eyes. They make really funny noises. I think that the electric leaf blowers they use by our house sound like really angry cows that don't shut up. Sometimes I'd moo back. You know the cows will always answer, and it's a never ending loop. My oma planted rose bushes in front of their barn when she was still alive to do things like that.
I would play in some of their food (the cottonseed, a cheap byproduct of the cotton industry) and we'd build enormous forts in the back where it was safe, and wave when the tractor (front loader) came by to pick some up. When it was clear, we'd find leftover cardboard and use it to slide down. It was ruined for me when one day I noticed tiny mites crawling all over the seeds. More protein for the cows.
Did you know that they put magnets in cows' stomachs? They're really strong, and any nails or nasty stuff like that they accidentally swallow doesn't go down their intestines. I used to play with them like people do with those buzzing magnet toys.
It's too wet to make and keep much hay here, so they would ferment mounds of fresh cut grass under sheets of plastic weighted down with old tires. They'd do it with the corn too. They'd have to drive over the grass with the tractor to pack it down: you can't have air or it'll rot. It was really steep and my mom was worried the tractor would tip. I wasn't allowed to ride in the tractor when he was doing that.
The smell of that fermented grass and the cow manure will always remind me of home.
I've never actually milked a cow or anything though. I would really like to learn how to milk a cow, but I think it would be very embarrassing if I wasn't good at it. People might think I've never touched a cow before. (Though I have done the bookkeeping on the corn harvest aka their food for the winter.)
I'm sure lots of people have multiple Cow Experiences so just pick the one where you were in the closest proximity to the Bovine.
Also feel free to describe your favorite Cow Experience in the tags

Hey. Yo. Hermit Crabs. DO NOT GET HERMIT CRABS. The industry that captures and sells them is one of the most exploitative, cruel ones in the pet trade. They are not taken care of properly. They are not fed properly. Most of them aren't even kept warm enough. Almost all crabs are wild caught. Only in the last few years did someone figure out how to breed them in captivity, and there aren't many of them around yet. If you ever had hermit crabs from a fair or tourist shop as a kid you probably know they are easy to care for pets that don't live very long, right? WRONG! WRONG AS ALL FUCK OFF! THEY DON'T LIVE VERRY LONG BECAUSE THEY ARE VERRY HARD TO CARE FOR!! A healthy hermit crab can live for over ten years. They need temperatures over 80 degrees in their habitat. They need things to climb and explore and hide under. They need substrate deep enough to borough at least six inches in. They need a varied diet of fresh foods including meats, fruits, vegetables, chitin, and a bunch of other stuff. They stress extremely easily, and stress produces chemicals in their body that will kill them. They need humidity of 80-90% to breath. They need pools of both fresh and salt water. If your tank doesn't have a secure lid they will escape and get loose in your house. healthy, unstressed ones can be acclimated to handling, and some even enjoy being picked up. but if you scare one it will draw blood with that claw. (It fuckin hurts) They are extremely social, and will die of loneliness if they are alone. But if they are in a group, and the habitat is to small, or there aren't enough shells to share, they will kill each other. A lot of pet stores, especially tourist shops, will give you a crab with a neon colored plastic shell in a tiny box with wet paper towels on the floor. They will hand you a bottle of crab pellets, tell you to fill up a bottle cap with chlorinated tap water, and let you know how easy they are to care for. Shame they only live a few months at most. Great pet for kindergarteners. Like raising a caterpillar.

What is a Fish Meal Dryer?
A fish meal dryer is a machine specifically designed to dry fish meal to the desired moisture level, typically around 10%. The drying process is crucial as it prevents microbial growth and spoilage, thereby extending the shelf life of the fish meal. Fish meal dryers come in various types, including rotary drum dryers, disc dryers, and fluidized bed dryers, each with unique characteristics and advantages.
Tumblr media
Features of a Fish Meal Dryer
1. Efficient Drying Capability: Fish meal dryers are built to handle large volumes of wet fish meal efficiently. They utilize advanced drying technologies to ensure uniform and consistent drying, which is essential for maintaining product quality.
2. Energy Efficiency: Modern fish meal dryers are designed to be energy-efficient. They use heat recovery systems and other technologies to minimize energy consumption, making the drying process more cost-effective.
3. Durability and Robustness: Given the demanding nature of fish meal production, fish meal dryers are constructed from durable materials that can withstand high temperatures and corrosive environments. This ensures long-term reliability and minimal downtime.
4. Environmental Considerations: Many fish meal dryers are equipped with pollution control systems to reduce emissions and comply with environmental regulations. This makes them a more sustainable choice for fish meal producers.
How Does a Fish Meal Dryer Work?
1. Feeding: The wet fish meal is fed into the dryer through a conveyor or feeder system. This ensures a steady and controlled flow of material into the dryer.
2. Drying Process: Inside the dryer, the fish meal is exposed to hot air or other drying agents. The specific mechanism depends on the type of dryer used:
Rotary Drum Dryers: The fish meal is tumbled in a rotating drum where it is heated and dried by hot air.
Disc Dryers: The fish meal is spread across heated discs that rotate, facilitating even drying.
Fluidized Bed Dryers: The fish meal is suspended in a stream of hot air, which dries it quickly and uniformly.
3. Moisture Reduction: As the fish meal passes through the dryer, the moisture content is gradually reduced to the desired level. This step is critical for preventing spoilage and ensuring the fish meal's stability.
4. Discharge: The dried fish meal is then discharged from the dryer and moved to the next stage of production, which may include milling, packaging, or storage.
Applications of Fish Meal Dryers
Fish meal dryers are primarily used in fish meal plants, where they are an integral part of the fish meal production process. However, their applications extend to other industries as well:
Animal Feed Production: Dried fish meal is a key ingredient in animal feeds, providing a rich source of protein for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture.
Fertilizer Manufacturing: Fish meal is also used in organic fertilizers, where its nutrient content benefits plant growth.
Industrial Uses: Fish meal is employed in various industrial applications, including pet food production and dietary supplements.
Benefits of Using a Fish Meal Dryer
1. Improved Product Quality: By effectively reducing the moisture content, fish meal dryers help produce high-quality fish meal that is free from spoilage and microbial contamination.
2. Increased Shelf Life: Proper drying extends the shelf life of fish meal, making it more suitable for storage and transportation.
3. Enhanced Economic Value: High-quality, dried fish meal commands a better market price, enhancing the economic value of the product.
A fish meal dryer is an indispensable component in the fish meal production process. It ensures the fish meal is dried to the appropriate moisture content, thereby enhancing its quality, shelf life, and market value. By understanding the features, working principles, and applications of a fish meal dryer, producers can optimize their operations and achieve better results.
