dair & 12 on the kiss prompts??
Dair & ...in grief
They get the call on a Thursday to come pick up the box. They go together.
It’s just plain brown corrugated cardboard with a paw-print inked on the side and a label reading “Hadley Waldorf-Humphrey.” The receptionist sets it down on the counter in front of them, and Blair stares at it while Dan signs all the paperwork. Somehow, the box seems both too big and too small for its contents, and she can’t bring herself to reach out and pick it up.
“I’m so sorry for your loss,” the receptionist says. It sounds to Blair like she’s on the other side of a glass wall.
“Thank you,” Dan says. He slides the box into a New Yorker tote and takes Blair’s hand. “Let’s go.” His voice is low, his head bent to the side, his mouth close to her ear, and she lets him lead her out of the small veterinary clinic, onto a steaming Upper East Side sidewalk.
They cut west down 66th. The streets are quiet, most of the neighborhood off in the Hamptons for the holiday weekend. They slide into the park near the zoo, where it’s five degrees cooler in the shade, the tiniest bit of relief from the oppression of late summer, and it’s an easy walk to the duck pond. The tote bag bangs against Dan’s hip, but he doesn’t complain. He keeps a tight grip on her hand, squeezing it every few minutes.
They find a secluded spot on the edge of the pond, between a couple of trees and largely out of sight, and for a moment they just stand there, hand in hand, looking out over the water. Then Dan reaches into the tote bag and pulls out the box.
The box that isn’t Hadley, not really.
Blair can still feel the soft brush of Hadley against her ankles, the scratch of Hadley’s tongue on the back of her hand. She was a small cat, made more of fur and personality than anything else; prone to dramatically flinging herself at the floor, the furniture, Dan’s lap. Fond of napping in the bathroom sink, burying herself in pillows, hissing at unwelcome guests. They’d acquired her in the first month of their marriage, on a whim one Saturday afternoon. She was already a lady, grown as big as she’d ever get. Had already lived a life before they brought her into theirs.
They’d carried her home in a cardboard box that day, too.
Dan lets go of her hand to tear at the corner of the box, where it’s glued shut. There’s a plastic bag inside, but there’s some loose dust—what’s left of her delicate bones, her plush fur, her pink nose—that clings to his fingers, and some more that drifts away in a breeze. Blair can feel hot tears climbing her throat, pushing their way to the surface, but she swallows them down. “We should say something,” she says. “First.”
Dan nods. “What do you want to say?” he asks.
Well, she hasn’t thought about it, how to sum up Hadley into words. “I—” she starts, but whatever else she wants to stay is stuck somewhere below the tears. She shakes her head.
“Remember the time we had Serena over?” Dan asks. He’s just holding the box, now, out in front of him, one corner of the flap peeled up. “It was like a week after we got her, and we were spending all of our time chasing her around the apartment trying to stop her from peeing on the furniture, and you forgot you’d invited Serena to dinner and she showed up and found us on our knees scrubbing the carpet in my office.”
Blair nods. At the time it felt like such a low moment for her, cleaning up cat urine.
“Or when Hadley fell completely in love with Nate and tried to surgically attach herself to him so he couldn’t leave without her?”
Blair had to buy Nate a new sweater after that, to replace the one Hadley shredded.
“And then when she realized Jenny actually did get to go home with Nate and never forgave her?”
A laugh makes it through the tears, bubbling up out of Blair’s mouth. She can still picture it: Hadley hissing at Jenny in the foyer and Jenny hissing right back.
“She was a good cat,” Blair says. It comes out with a single sharp sob.
Dan steps closer to her, wrapping one arm around her shoulders, and she presses her face into his neck. Her tears pool where her mouth meets the cotton of his crew-neck tee. He kisses her, featherlight, at her hairline. Once. Twice. “She was such a good cat,” he says into her hair.
She pulls herself together one breath at a time, until she can step away from him, stand on her own. She slides one finger under each eye, flicking away the tears that have gathered in her lashes. Dan waits for, her, not-Hadley still clutched in one hand.
“I’m ready now,” she says. She’s not, not really, but she’ll pretend.
With one hard yank, Dan gets the edge of the box off, enough to get to the plastic bag inside. They crouch down together at the edge of the water.
“Goodbye, Hadley,” she says, as the ashes pour out into the duck pond. Some of them saturate, and sink, and some float away from them, a little gray bubble drifting off into Central Park.
“Bye, Had,” Dan echoes.
Blair swallows, and takes his hand, and together they watch her go.

UWG Alumna Veterinarian is Leader of the Pack at Mobile Animal Clinic
by Julie Lineback
Oct. 11, 2022
Reading time: 3 minutes, 34 seconds
This National Pet Wellness Month and National Women’s Small Business Month, both celebrated in October, the University of West Georgia sat down with alumna Dr. Jasmine Gibbs ’14, owner of Two Beating Hearts Mobile Veterinary Clinic, to discuss her journey to entrepreneurship.
Animals have been Gibbs’ constant her entire life. Before she could walk, talk or even form memories, they’ve been there.
So it seemed natural that she started volunteering at an animal shelter at age 15, followed by her first job as a kennel technician. Gibbs said it wasn’t much different than what she did at home – cleaning, feeding and administering medication – but she was exposed to a different side she hadn’t seen before.
“I became intrigued by the doctors: how they would advocate for the pets they worked on, come up with treatment plans and perform surgery,” she explained. “I wanted to not only be a champion for the pets, who are unable to speak, but also the families who loved and cared for these fur babies.”
Around the same time, Gibbs was introduced to UWG by an older cousin. Needing that academic bridge between high school and vet school, she decided to check it out.
“Once I visited UWG, I loved how the community felt,” she recalled. “Everyone interacted as if they were family, no matter their background. The diversity of the campus was a huge bonus.”
She enrolled in the biology professional preparation track, one designed to prepare students for the exams and standards of medical, dental, veterinary, physical therapy and physician’s assistant programs.
“A bachelor’s in biology was not easy,” Gibbs sighed. “Veterinary school was the exact same. I had everything down pat once I hit my second semester at vet school, making sure I had time for myself, my studies and friends. It’s all about balance, and UWG definitely prepared me.”

After graduating from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, Gibbs began working for a popular pet-care corporation. While there, Gibbs began working with a mobile pet company on her off days. After seeing how they ran their business and what it felt like to be out of a hospital setting, she decided to open Two Beating Hearts in February 2020.
“I’ve never wanted to work for someone else, although I knew it was needed to become a better business owner and doctor,” she said. “I wanted to be mobile so I could help primarily the disabled and elders since they appeared to have the most difficulty leaving the house with their pets. I also want to ensure my clients are able to understand what I am saying, the procedures that I am doing, and see that I care about not only the pets but them as well.”
Two Beating Hearts currently serves parts of Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Fulton counties in the Atlanta area. Services provided by Gibbs include vaccines for cats and dogs, non-emergent diagnostics like bloodwork and urinalysis, reproductive testing and nail trimming.
Gibbs – who serves as doctor, receptionist, administrator and bookkeeper – allocates 80 minutes for each appointment. In five years, she sees herself with two or three vans expanding to other neighboring counties, from Carroll to the southwest and Hall to the northeast. She hopes to have a brick-and-mortar location for surgeries.
The lessons Gibbs has learned as a small business owner have helped her naturally evolve throughout her career. She hopes to be a role model for future female entrepreneurs.
“There will be times when you feel down, where you feel like nothing is working in your favor, that the world is against you,” Gibbs concluded. “That feeling is normal. Just remember who you are as a person, why you decided to do what you are doing, and keep swimming. I am still learning every day that this journey is a tough one, especially when you are doing it on your own. However, one thing I will never do is give up on myself or my dream.”

Is spot in the small town au?
yes!!
okay so i'm just gonna list everyone and give a little rundown of their place in the au!
this is REALLY long, but please feel free to ask me about any of them !!! i love them so much!! please !! so, here it goes:
SMALL TOWN AU CHARACTER LIST:
Jack Kelly:
17 or 18, depending on when it takes place
Birthday: July 3rd
Jack is involved in the rodeo circuit. He primarily participates in barrel racing, though he also participated in steer riding- basically the junior equivalent of bull riding for 7-13 year olds.
He has two horses, Dolly (10) and Cash (6). Dolly is his pride and joy and is the horse he trains with most often. She's also his main rodeo horse. Cash is ,, just kind of there, but he's a fun time and Jack works with him as well, though Cash isn't as experienced in the rodeo circuit. He's more of a recreational horse.
Jack is also a student, entering his senior year. (All fics that have been uploaded take place in the summer between junior and senior year.)
He's bisexual (though it's a long process for him to be able to admit it, to himself and to anyone else).
He lives on a farm on the outskirts of town with his father, Daniel, a harsh and unsupportive man who rarely shows up to any of Jack’s events. The farm is fairly large and successful; they raise cattle for stock shows and have had a long partnership with the butcher in town. Jack also raises hens on his own and sells the eggs as a side hustle for some extra cash because, like, why not?
side note: his chickens are his 'ladies'
Jack has an interest in art, the history of the 'wild west', and politics. He hopes to go to university and major in either Studio Arts or Graphic Design, but he's scared that he will have to stay home on the farm.
David Jacobs:
18
Birthday: May 11th
David is everyone's favorite city boy. He was born and raised in Manhattan, though his family relocates to a small, rural town in the American southwest because of a job opportunity for David’s father.
Naturally, David has no clue what to think. He goes from being an out-and-proud gay teenager to being shoved back into the closet, and he doesn't come out to anyone until at least two months after they arrive in town.
He’s Jewish, and is actually a polyglot; he can speak English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, French, and Spanish. All of the Jacobs kids can speak Hebrew, Yiddish, and Polish- just because it’s kind of a family thing? David’s grandparents don’t speak much English, and Esther and Mayer wanted their children to be multilingual.
David is also a student going into his senior year. He's very active in extracurriculars; he takes all AP classes, he does public speaking, he enjoys volunteer work, etc. His resumé is extensive and impressive.
He meets Jack because Les, ever the inquisitive child, saw an ad for the rodeo and basically begged to go. Since Esther and Mayer were busy, and Sarah already had work, David volunteered to take him.
This is where they meet Jack, and David falls head over heels for the boy.
Anyway, David doesn’t exactly *like* living in a small town like this, but the people he meets are more genuine than anyone he’s ever met in the city.
When he goes to university, he wants to major in English Education, with a double-minor in Creative Writing and Comparative Literature. But there’s something about this little town that makes him want to stay close and not go to a huge university across the country.
Katherine Pulitzer:
17
Birthday: January 30th
Katherine is a barrel racer, just like Jack. She’s actually one of the best around; she’s beat Jack more times than he can count, and has the most wins under her belt- more than anyone in their group.
She’s whip smart, too. She takes AP classes, she’s taking concurrent college courses- she’s basically the golden child.
Her horse is named Shakespeare. I will not budge on this.
She loves reading, obviously; she has, like, three bookshelves in her bedroom alone.
She actually doesn’t look like a typical Southern girl. Unless she’s barrel racing or training with Shakespeare- when she wears jeans, a button up, and boots- she wears skirts and heels and has very extravagant makeup; she doesn’t like taking herself too seriously.
She’s going to college for Journalism, and hopes to be a reporter for a big news station. Her father isn’t particularly fond of this decision, mainly because he wants her to stay in town for the rest of her life and run the town newspaper, but Katherine has bigger aspirations.
Charlie “Crutchie” Morris
17
Birthday: August 12
Though Crutchie isn’t directly involved with the rodeos, he’s a huge helper- mainly because he’s the one who takes care of everyone’s horses.
Not really, but kind of. His family owns the veterinary clinic in town, so he often goes with his parents on farm calls, and basically works for them. Everything he knows about animals has been learned from a lifetime of living behind the vet clinic, spending lunch hours watching surgeries, and going to different farms every weekend.
He’s best friends with Jack Kelly. They actually met because of the clinic; Crutchie would often come to the Kelly’s farm with his mother whenever they went to check on the horses or the cattle.
He does a few different sports, both through the school and through different leagues in the surrounding areas.
He's going to major in Animal Science in university, then go to vet school! He hopes to expand his family's clinic.
Antonio "Racer" Higgins
17
Birthday: February 14th
This boy. Thiiiiis boy. He's one hell of a fun time. He throws the best bonfires, he knows all the line dances, and he's the life of the party wherever he goes.
But he's also really fucking intelligent. Like, 32 on the ACT intelligent. He could go to any school he wants to go to, and he's going to major in Animal Science like Crutchie- but he's actually planning on participating in the collegiate rodeo circuit, and hopes to go professional after college.
He's a snarky little smart-ass, but he's one of the most genuine people. He tells it like it is, because being honest is more important than saving feelings.
But he's also a complete softie! He gives really good hugs and is one of the most affectionate people in the group.
Albert DaSilva:
18
Birthday: October 30th
Albert is a senior like the rest of them, and he's one of the only ones- like Crutchie- not directly involved in the rodeos.
He's always there, though! He loves the atmosphere and likes supporting his friends!!
Albert works at his Uncle's auto shop. He's really handy and loves it. He loves cars, loves working with his hands, and loves the technical side of things.
Whenever Jack needs help with his truck, an ancient Dodge Dakota, Albert is right there. He also works on trailers and stuff!
Albert is also really into welding. He's been welding with his Uncle since he was, like, 13, and he's going to go to a technical school instead of college so he can get his welding certification.
Sean "Spot" Conlon
18
Birthday: December 10th
Spot is involved with the rodeo! He doesn't barrel race, though; he does saddle bronc and bull riding.
He also used to do calf roping when he was younger.
He's one of the most intense guys around. He loves rodeo and loves the community; he's serious about it, and- like Race- he hopes to go professional as an adult. He's also, of course, looking to be involved on the collegiate level.
But he also knows how to have fun. He likes bonfires and likes getting together with his friends, and he has the best sense of humor; he makes the funniest, quickest jokes and no one ever expects it from him.
I've talked about this before, but Spot isn't the best at having heart to hearts. He's very business-minded, but his love language is gift giving! He's just,, not very conventional at it.
He gives random gifts like sticks and rocks, but everyone loves it anyway. He's good. He's a good guy.
And that's that !! There are a few more background characters, of course, but these are the mains. I hope you guys enjoy this !!

If You’re Good At Something, Never Do It For Free Chapter One: In Need Of Some Assistance
I figured I’d post the first chapter of my WIP on here! TDK Joker x Original Female Character. It is currently at 17 out of ? (Where it stops, nobody knows!) chapters on AO3!
**Warnings for full fic include: Graphic violence, explicit language, blood and gore, smut smut smut, graphic depiction of corpses, murder, aaaand recreational drug use!**
Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think! I might eventually put all of the chapters up on here or check it out on AO3!
Meet Nora Hawthorne. She spent her time like most Gotham residents. Go to work, go home, keep up with the news. That changed one night. Her life becomes even more interesting after Gotham's own Clown Prince of Crime comes crashing in with a life-threatening injury, leaving her questioning her morals as well as her romantic desires
Jesus, it’s been a long day. A woman with brunette hair above her shoulders, wearing a pair of loose teal green scrubs stands from her desk chair to twist her torso until a satisfying *crack* is heard, followed by a deep sigh. The noise of her tired spine popping into alignment is heard only by her as she stands alone in the treatment area of the now empty veterinary hospital. The brick structure sits between an apartment building and a law firm in West Harlow, the Gotham City neighborhood west of downtown, adjacent to The Narrows. This location makes Dr. Nora Hawthorne one busy veterinarian. On a daily basis she tends to anything from impatient businessmen toting in their wives’ teacup Yorkies with a little cough to large Rottweilers with deep neck wounds. To say she’s gained a variety of experience is an understatement.
She doesn’t own the place, though. Two years out of school and 30 years old means she has some hefty bills to pay. Dr. Moore owns the clinic. Taking this job meant long hours and a busy schedule with not much sympathy from David Moore. “Your generation expects everything handed to them, don’t you? I had to work harder than this to get where I am,” as he just loved to remind her of every time she requested time off for a little… what is it called again? Oh right, work-life balance. Sure, Moore. Enjoy your mini mansion in Uptown since it seems you have no problem balancing the weight of your business on a pair of younger shoulders. Even if it means those shoulders are constantly wound up in to deep knots that no amount of morning yoga can seem to unravel. But she can’t quit. Those bills to pay threaten to pile higher and she’s afraid of heights. Plus, job security in Gotham is hard to come by. Especially since the Joker escaped from Arkham two months ago.
That was in May. Everyone in the city has been on edge since then and the Summer heat is not helping. The days go by but not a peep has been heard in regard to the Clown Prince of Crime’s whereabouts. Same for the Batman. The eerie silence has only been making it worse. The traffic congesting the city streets increases in intensity every evening as Gotham’s citizens rush home in an effort to avoid getting caught up in whatever devastating scheme the Joker has been cooking up during his involuntary vacation. But the threat never comes, leaving the city’s inhabitants to nervously watch and wait. Maybe it won’t come. Maybe he left Gotham for good. Left to terrorize a new city. Wishful thinking is what gets us all through the day. But the tension still weighs on everyone’s nerves, making Nora’s day that much harder when she gets an earful from her clients on a regular basis for things that are out of her control. “Sir, you don’t need to speak to me like that. I did not give your cat a urinary tract infection,” is not something she thought she’d ever find herself saying.
It is what it is. All she can do is keep her head on her shoulders and do her job, care for Gotham’s only truly innocent citizens. Animals don’t dwell in the past, they only live in the present. In that regard, they’re smarter than the majority of Gotham’s inhabitants. She made it her job to advocate for their health and well-being, since they can’t do it themselves. Nora was staying late to finish medical records for the sea of patients the clinic took in that day and she wanted it all recorded while it was fresh in her brain. If you don’t write it down, it didn’t happen. She told her assistant, “You go on home, I’ll just be here finishing notes. Get some rest.” The heavy set women expressed her concern for Dr. Hawthorne being here by herself but the job has gotten her used to being out well after dark. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep the door locked,” was the response her assistant, Jen, would always get in return. She didn’t want to argue so she would leave Nora to her work within the off-white walls of the dimly lit hospital in silence.
Nora stretched once more and shifted a glance to the clock on the wall. 9:58pm. Had it been fourteen hours already? Her stomach responded with a growl as if to answer in the affirmative. The hard-working staff finished cleaning the treatment room a couple of hours ago leaving the two metal tables in the center of the room shiny and ready for whatever tomorrow brings. The room wasn’t very large but the open design left ample room for patient care. The treatment tables against the walls opposite from each other extended toward the center of the room, leaving a four foot space between them, and had ceiling-mounted exam lights above them. Along the walls there were shelves of neatly organized equipment and tools. Essentials. White medical tape, boxes of gloves, bandage scissors, IV catheters in a variety of sizes, thermometers, bottles of isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, jars with gauze soaked in chlorhexidine scrub, sterile lubricant, needles and syringes, and bandage material being among the most heavily utilized items. Along the back wall is a bank of cages and kennels for patients spending the day in the clinic (any patients in need of continued care were transferred to a nearby twenty four-hour hospital) flanked by drawers full of IV fluids and sterilized tools. The back right corner of the room opened into a short hallway leading to the area that housed a small surgical suite, devoid of any light this time of night, where a cart with monitors and a gas anesthesia circuit sat in wait for its next use. Just beyond this suite is a small door marked “Radiology” indicating the digital X-ray equipment kept inside, keeping radiation exposure to the rest of the place at a minimum. Nora’s desk is in the back left corner of the treatment room, a shelf full of medical reference books sitting above her head. Also that “World’s Greatest Dog-tor” certificate Jen gave her last Spring. Nora didn’t have the heart to tell her she found it kind of insulting.
With the last medical record completed, details of the day’s procedures noted in succinct but thorough language, it was time for the doctor to make her way back to her nearby apartment for some much needed rest. She left her seldom-worn long white lab coat on the back of her chair where it always was and removed the black stethoscope from around her neck to place it on her desk. Walking toward the red-lit exit sign above the side door leading to the alley, she flicked the switch to turn the remaining lights off. She usually had a small can of pepper spray readied in her hand when she left alone at a late hour. But Nora had been practically beaten into the ground with exhaustion at this point and her thoughts were instead centered around a hot shower and her soft bed.
She opened the door to receive a gust of warm night air to her face, intensifying her sleepy feelings. Letting out a rather large yawn, she turned to put her keys in the door to lock it. As she removed the key from the lock, she felt a strange sensation on the back her neck. Like a crawling of her skin, a feeling of dread. Before she could turn around in search of the source of her body’s sudden danger signal, a purple glove slammed onto the door next to her head. Her eyes snapped to the glove and she froze, unable to breathe, while her heart jumped into her throat.
“Evening, doc,” a nasally, raspy voice said. She slowly turned her head to find herself face to face with the Joker himself, leaning with his gloved hand against the door. His makeup was smudged wildly and he was wearing his signature purple overcoat and suit. All color drained from Nora’s face as her breathing quickened to a practically panting rate, the idea of sleep drowned in a surge of adrenaline. Before she could make a sound his other gloved hand clapped over her mouth, a knife tucked between his thumb and index finger, the blade laying flat across the top of his hand.
“Ahh tah tah, no screamin’, doc. Wouldn’t want to wake the neighbors, would we?” he said, his dark eyes staring straight into hers. Nora struggled to regain her composure, it did her no good to panic. She knew begging and crying would get her nowhere with the Joker. Better to have as clear a head as possible. She took a sharp inhale through her nose. The wave of gasoline and extinguished matches that met her nostrils was overwhelming. It almost made her dizzy. But she slowly let the breath back out through her nose. Their gaze into each other’s eyes, hers wide with fear, his black and hooded, had not been broken since his zeroed in on hers. It was like magnets were keeping her eyes on his, no matter how hard she tried to look away, she couldn’t do it.
“Now. I’m going to move my hand and youuu are not gonna scream. Got it?” his voice getting slightly higher as he spoke. Without thinking Nora nodded slowly, still not breaking their stare, as he slid his hand from over her mouth.
She allowed herself to blink. Then, trying not to let her voice crack, she quietly said, “H-How did you know I’m a doctor?” Stupid stupid stupid. You are an idiot Nora Hawthorne.
Joker let out a breathy giggle and Nora’s gaze then fixated on his mouth. His scars. They were even more striking up close. Nora was no stranger to stitching up wounds and these must have been awful. She didn’t want him to see her eyeing them so she shifted her eyes back up to his.
“Who else would be here this la-te, hm?” Nora couldn’t do anything but open her mouth and shake her head, her eyebrows knitted together with anxiety.
Still bracing himself against the building on his left hand planted on top of the door he said, “Enough with the formalities doc. I am in need for some, uh, assistance, you see.” It was then that the doctor noticed the Joker’s breathing. It was shallow and rather fast. Like he couldn’t catch his breath but was trying to. Oh shit, what does he mean by that. She wasn’t sure how she didn’t notice his labored breathing until now. She supposed being paralyzed with fear would do that to a person. Nora watched as the Joker then lifted the flap of his coat from his right side, revealing a two inch wide piece of glass sticking out from between his ribs. There was blood trailing from it, down his green vest. She gasped. He dropped the fabric and grabbed her by the chin, jerking her head so her eyes met his yet again.
“So, my little doctor, youuu are going to provide said assistance-ah,” he growled. Nora’s eyes grew even wider.
“Wait wait, what? No no I’m a veterinarian, I’m not a human doctor,” she said in a panicked voice. Yeah, nice one, Hawthorne.
“I can read, doc,” the Joker said, gesturing to the painted door that read Gotham City Veterinary Urgent Care. “I know you’ve got what I need in that pretty little head of yours.” He tried to stifle a gasping sound from his throat as he attempted to inhale before speaking again. “I am an animal after all aren’t I, hm?” he said, leaning his head forward and bouncing his eyebrows suggestively. Nora was stunned.
“Why me? Why did you come here for help?”
“Can’t quite go to the emergency room, can I doc? Besides, you take care of little doggies and kitties all day. Just think of meee as a lost little, uh, puppy,” he said, shifting his weight to put his knife-wielding right hand against the door on the other side of her head so Nora was trapped beneath him, their noses inches apart.
Fear bubbled its way up into her head again. She couldn’t think straight. How did Gotham’s most notorious criminal end up here, in front of her, with a life-threatening injury? It didn’t matter how, it only mattered that now it was happening. But, how could she justify helping the Joker? He caused so much death and destruction to this city, her city. She could do her best to fight, she might stand a chance against him in this weakened state. But he was the Joker. He’d probably still be able to slit her throat faster than she could get out from under him. He was the Joker but he also was a person. A person in what she was sure was a significant amount of pain. Another gasping sound made its way out of Joker’s mouth.
“Haven’t got all night, doc.”
Nora’s expression softened. What the fuck am I getting myself into?
“Ok,” she said, lifting her keys and turning to unlock the door.

A Coronavirus Spread Through U.S. Pigs in 2013. Here’s How It Was Stopped

A Coronavirus Spread Through U.S. Pigs in 2013. Here’s How It Was Stopped
In the spring of 2013, a deadly coronavirus began to spread across the United States. Within a year it had reached 32 states, sweeping through dense populations that lacked immunity to the new pathogen. Though researchers scrambled to curb the disease, by the following spring, the epidemic claimed some 8 million lives—all of them pigs.
The pathogen responsible, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv), poses no danger to humans. But among its hosts, pigs, the virus ravages their bodies with severe gastrointestinal disease. The 2013 outbreak killed an estimated 10 percent of the nation’s pigs in a matter of months. Struggling to make ends meet with limited supplies, pork producers pushed their prices to record highs as farmers nursed the dying and sick—most of which were newborn piglets—by the thousands.
“It was extremely devastating,” says Don Davidson, a veterinarian with the Ohio-based food company Cooper Farms. “The losses were huge. Months later … you could just see there weren’t as many pigs in market.”
By summer of 2014, the diarrheal disease had mostly petered out, partly because of a combination of increased diagnostic efforts and the growing immunity of the nation’s pig population. But perhaps the biggest factor in ending the epidemic was behavioral: a near-universal ramp-up in farms attention to cleaning, disinfection and isolation, says Michaela Trudeau, an animal coronavirus researcher at the University of Minnesota. These enhanced biosecurity measures “are one set of things we turn to over and over again to keep our pigs safe,” she says.
As the world battles another dangerous coronavirus, the human pathogen SARS-CoV-2, similar lessons could prove valuable once again. People aren’t pigs, and SARS-CoV-2—a respiratory virus—does not cause the same illness as PEDv. But this new coronavirus is vulnerable to many of the tactics that brought its predecessors to heel. In both cases, “it comes down to cooperation,” Trudeau says. “The more people [working to] contain it, the better off we’ll be.”
A cosmopolitan disease
The human population first discovered PEDv in the early 1970s, when veterinarians in Britain noticed pigs falling ill with bouts of watery diarrhea that couldn’t be traced back to any known pathogens. Because many cases were mild and the disease mostly spared piglets, farmers largely shrugged off the outbreaks.
Then, as the decades passed, the virus snuck across international borders and mutated. By 2010, strains emerging in China were sparking massive outbreaks that felled newborn pigs in droves.
In April of 2013, PEDv made landfall in the United States, flaring up first in Ohio and then Indiana and Iowa. Alarmed farmers and researchers ran tests for the typical spate of diarrheal microbes, yielding negative after negative. By the time PEDv was identified as the likely culprit, the pathogen had started to spread east and west. Although American veterinarians knew of the virus’ existence abroad, few had given serious thought to a PEDv cross-continental jump. American pigs had no immunity to fight off the new pathogen, and no vaccines or treatments were available.
The virus “had never made it to the U.S., and we thought it would stay that way,” says Montserrat Torremorell, an animal health expert at the University of Minnesota. “We weren’t ready.”
(United States Department of Agriculture-National Agriculture Statistics Service)
Likely stemming from the same ancestor that had yielded China’s deadly strains, the American variant of the virus proved a formidable foe. “It’s extremely infectious” in low doses, says Davidson, who explains he once heard that “the eraser on top of a No. 2 pencil could hold enough PED virus to infect every pig in the United States.”
Once swallowed by an unsuspecting piglet, the pathogen would travel to the gut and infect and destroy the finger-like nutrient-absorbing projections called villi on the walls of the small intestine. Newborn piglets were plagued with intense bouts of diarrhea, driving extreme dehydration that proved lethal within a few days of infection: On many farms, the death rates in the youngest swine “were just about 100 percent,” Davidson says.
Though older pigs remained mostly resilient to the disease’s most severe effects, they weren’t immune to infection. Even in the absence of symptoms, they shed and spread the virus through their feces, seeding new outbreaks as unsuspecting farmers shipped their swine stocks nationwide.
“This industry is structured in such a way that pigs move, and not just by a few miles,” Torremorell says. Domesticated pigs are, not unlike humans, a fairly cosmopolitan group. In a single lifetime, a pig may make several trips of a thousand miles or more, such as when it’s ready for sale or slaughter.
Humans, too, played a major role in transmission. While PEDv can’t infect people, the pathogen used them as its oblivious chauffeurs, hitching rides to new swine hosts as farmers, feed suppliers and veterinarians traveled from place to place. Hardy enough to persist for several days outside the pig body, the virus clung to clothes and glommed onto the soles of shoes. It planted itself onto equipment and coated the insides of trailers and trucks.
Worst of all may have been the virus’ ability to fester for weeks in feed, giving the pathogen a straight shot into the guts of its hosts. “Feed ingredients have unique access to our pigs,” says Megan Niederwerder, a veterinary virologist at Kansas State University. “That definitely was not at the forefront of our minds.”
A wake-up call
The outbreak moved at “eye opening” speed, Davidson says. “Just about everybody got it. I don’t know any large farm systems that didn’t.”
In the absence of reliable, widely available medical interventions, farmers and veterinarians turned most of their focus to diagnosis and containment. “We already had pretty solid biosecurity protocols on farms,” Trudeau says. “But this really made us take a step back and think, because it was traveling so easily which we hadn’t necessarily seen with other viruses before.”
Suddenly, Trudeau says, everything moving to and from a farm was subject to intense scrutiny. No surface was too small or too hidden to escape the reach of a microscopic virus. All pigs and people had to be treated as potential vectors for disease.
“Farmers effectively shut down their farms,” says Scott Kenney, an animal coronavirus researcher at Ohio State University. “Friends from other farms weren’t able to come in, sales reps weren’t allowed to come in. And the people who did had to change their clothes before going into farms.”
Trudeau says that most places that dealt with pigs already had a “shower in, shower out” policy in place that required visitors to remove their clothing, wash off with soap and water, and don a clean outfit before making any contact with animals. Exiting the building then required the same procedure in reverse. “It’s very extensive,” she says. “Nothing is coming onto the farm that hasn’t been washed.”
In the pre-PEDv era, not everyone was vigilant about following showering guidelines, Trudeau says. By necessity, the outbreak changed that, says Marie Culhane, a veterinarian at the University of Minnesota. “It’s not business as usual during an outbreak.”
Farmers, feed distributors and transport personnel became ardent disinfectors, regularly sterilizing frequently contacted surfaces, including equipment. Because the insides of trucks were especially difficult to clean, drivers ferrying supplies no longer left their vehicles, asking farm personnel to do the unloading themselves. And any individuals who had recently spent time in a heavily pig-populated place, like a county fair, would wait at least 72 hours before stepping onto a swine establishment—a form of self-isolation.
Importantly, farmers put these measures in place without waiting for their pigs to show symptoms, Torremorell says. “When that virus infects older animals, they can be shedding continuously and have no clinical signs. You just don’t know.”
The payoff wasn’t instantaneous. But slowly the epidemic began to wane, and by the fall of 2014, PEDv had finally loosened its grip. The virus has reappeared in the years since, flickering briefly in pig populations before being stamped out. Many of the pigs that survived the first epidemic became immune to further infection. But farmers are also much more savvy nowadays. Whenever the pathogen appears, “they basically shut down things right away, like going into lockdown,” Torremorell says. “When that happens, there’s not as much spread.”
The other coronavirus
In the absence of an effective, long-lasting PEDv vaccine—something that still eludes veterinarians—control of epidemics “depends critically on high biosecurity,” says Qiuhong Wang, an animal coronavirus expert at Ohio State University.
While SARS-CoV-2 and PEDv belong to the same family, the two viruses target different hosts and different parts of the body, and shouldn’t be considered interchangeable in any respects. But in broad strokes, containing an infectious disease hinges on a common set of principles that promotes awareness about transmission, minimizes contamination of surfaces and materials, and champions the effectiveness of practicing good hygiene, Torremorell says.
For humans, following that strategy includes adhering to physical distancing measures, frequent cleaning and disinfecting and taking precautions in the absence of symptoms, Trudeau says. What’s more, adopting these tactics now could help prepare the population for its next outbreak.
“We learned lots on the pig side about being better prepared,” Davidson says. “Behavioral change is hard. But it works.”

A Walk in the Park
Chapter 1
Hey all! This is my very first fic, so please take it easy on me. It’s unbeta’d so all mistakes are my own. This is a RPF with Chris Evans. Obviously this is fiction and all in good fun. This is a one shot but please let me know if you would like a part 2. Tagging my girl @flamencodiva
You were getting tired from walking and thought you should probably be getting back home. It was getting late, well, not really. You were more of a homebody these days and since it was after 6, yeah, you should probably get home. You turned back around on the sidewalk and started to walk the 12 or so blocks back to your street. You were trying to walk as much as possible to get to know the area. The LA lifestyle of driving everywhere wasn’t your thing. You didn’t like driving to begin with and you were never the primary driver back home. Home. What a difference a couple of months can make.
The weather is perfect for mid-March being in the 60s in the early evening hours. Back home you’d still have snow on the ground and looking forward to days in the 40s. This is better. This is a change. This is good. Your family and friends thought you were crazy leaving a well-paying job and nice home in the suburbs that was mostly paid off to move from the Midwest to the West coast. You still lived in a family-oriented neighborhood, not quite adventurous enough to move downtown in a high rise. You were renting a studio apartment on the second story of James and Connie Smith’s home. Their two kids had moved out on their own a couple of years ago and they decided to convert part of their second story. They liked the neighborhood and didn’t want to move, but didn’t need all the space. It’s a nice unit on a tree lined street with enough room for you to park your car on the driveway. It was just you after all and after selling and donating most of your possessions, you didn’t need a ton of room.
Instead of sticking to the sidewalk, you crossed the empty road to check out the small park you walked by earlier. It’s not really a park per say as there isn’t any playground equipment or picnic tables. More of a green space set aside for people to relax. At least that’s how you thought of it. A large water fountain sat in the middle of the park with 4 wooden benches circling it. Walking up to the fountain you stuck your hand into the water for just a second feeling the cool liquid on your skin. It was quiet except for the splashing of the water. Being around dinner time few people were out walking around and you enjoyed the peacefulness of it all. Deciding to extend your evening stroll you took a seat at one of the benches and concentrated on the spray of the water. Losing yourself in the cool air and sounds of the water you didn’t notice the cute brown and white dog trotting over to you until you felt something bump your knee. Slightly jumping up and off of the bench with a tiny squeak you looked down and saw your offender.
“Well hello there pup! You kind of scared me for a second.” Looking around you didn’t see anybody in the park or down either side of the road. The adorable dog bumped your leg again with his nose and tilted his head to the side. He was wearing a collar with a blue leash attached but you didn’t see any tags. “Where’s your mama or your papa? Hmm?” Bending down you gave his head a good rub seeing that he was definitely friendly. You weren’t sure what to do. Your car was at least 6 blocks away, you didn’t know where any veterinary clinics or animal shelters were and you didn’t know anybody else in the neighborhood besides the Smiths. You picked up his leash and walked the perimeter of the park hoping someone would spot you or your new friend. After a few minutes and no one still in sight, you took a seat on the grass with your legs stretched out in front of you deciding to wait it out.
After about 10 minutes, your new K9 companion laid down next to you with his face resting on your left leg. Giving him a few rubs with his leash looped through your left hand you grabbed your phone with the other and absentmindedly scrolled through Twitter.
“Hey! What are you doing with my dog?” A man’s voice yelled from the other side of the park. He sounded almost angry. You jumped up quickly while trying to remain in control of the leash as the dog started to spin around in circles as the man jogged over to you.
“I’m sorry. What did you say?” You asked when the man reached you grabbing the leash out of your hand. He didn’t respond but instead bent down on one knee letting the pup lick his face while telling him that he shouldn’t run off like that again.
You stood there dumbstruck as he continued to ignore you. He stood back up and starred at you for a second before speaking. He was tall, but not overly tall. Being above average height yourself it’s one of the first things you notice about a man. He had ballcap on down low but you could still see his piercing blue eyes. He had quite a lot of stubble on his face but it looked good on him. “I asked what you were doing with my dog.” He said.
“Oh, um, he wandered up to me and I saw that he had a leash but no one was around so I decided to stay here in case someone came looking for him. I live 6 blocks that way.” You said while pointing to your left. “And I didn’t want to head that way in case his owner was coming from the opposite way. You took a quick breath. “I decided it was best to stay put and keep him company. I’m really sorry if I worried you. I know I would be worried to if my dog, I mean, if I had a dog and he took off on me. And oh, I am really rambling here.” You bit your bottom lip and placed your hand over your mouth.
His mouth quirked in a partial smile and his eyes crinkled at you. “No, I am sorry.” He let out a breathy sigh. “He just had me so worried and then I saw the leash in your hand and I thought maybe you were trying to take him.”
You let out a small giggle and extended your hand. “I’m Y/N.”
He shook your hand. “I’m Chris. This naughty boy is Dodger.” He gestured with hand. “I hope he wasn’t too much trouble. He normally stays next to me while we’re in the garage. I had his leash on because we were going to go for a walk but I needed to grab something out of my car. I guess he decided to go ahead without me.”
“Well, hi Dodger, it’s great to have a name with a face.” You said looking down into his gorgeous eyes. “He was a great companion this evening and it was no trouble at all. I’m new to this neighborhood and city really, so it’s nice to make new friends.” You said with a wink. Were you flirting? No, this was absolutely not flirting. You weren’t ready for that.
“Oh, where are you from?” Chris asked.
“Minnesota. Been here about two months now.”
“That’s quite the move. What made you decide to move to LA?” he asked.
“I needed a change. Really it’s more like a fresh start even though I’m in my mid 30s and should probably be more settled.” Did you just confess your age? Why would you do that? “So new career, new change of scenery. A warmer lifestyle.” You said with a bright smile. You bounced on your feet, something you did when you were nervous.
You left home because you couldn’t handle being in your house anymore. You met Caleb shortly after college and married a couple of years later. You both had stable jobs, a house, but a family never came. You both wanted it but it just wasn’t in the cards for you. He was enough. Together you were enough. 8 years later Caleb was taken from you. A normal trip to the grocery store to grab a few things afterwork and he didn’t make it home. Two policemen were at your door a couple of hours later. They told you Caleb was hit by a red-light runner and didn’t make it. You lived in your house for a year by yourself. You decided to sell and once it sold, you decided to move.
“Change is good at any age. What kind of career change are you making? Acting?” he asked.
“Oh, God no.” Realizing how bad that sounded you quickly added “I mean, that’s just not for me. I get pretty shy when the attention is on me and I can barely walk and talk at the same time. I’m actually an events coordinator for a PR firm. Well, technically I am an assistant to an events coordinator but I am told that I could easily be moved up within a year. It’s something I dabbled with in college.”
He started to lift up his eyebrows and opened his mouth but you cut him off. “And before you say it, I didn’t plan keggers. I worked on university events like fundraisers.”
He smiled and nodded his head. “That’s really cool and I hope it works out for you.”
Dodger started to whine and Chris looked down at him. “I think he’s ready for dinner and the sun is starting to set. I’m sure you have places to be and we’ve kept you long enough.”
“It’s fine. I’m actually just headed home. I don’t really know anyone here yet, so I was just going to go home and Netflix and chill.” Chris started to laugh and you realized your mistake.
“I mean, watch Netflix and relax before going to bed. I don’t think I can Netflix and chill by myself.” Chris started to laugh again and shake his head. “I suppose you could do that by yourself, but that’s not what I am doing.” You laughed and then let out a big huff of air. You pointed in the direction you were going. “I should probably just go.”
“Y/N, you are hilarious and it’s been a pleasure meeting you. I thank you for keeping Dodger company for me.”
“It was no problem at all. You have a sweet boy there.” Bending down you gave Dodger a scratch behind the ear. You gave a wave to Chris and started to walk out the park, crossing back across the street to the sidewalk.
“Hey Y/N!” Chris yelled. You turned around and saw Chris and Dodger walking over toward you.
You stopped walking and turned around. “Yeah?” You asked.
“So, a few friends and I get together once a month and play board games. It’s kind of nerdy, but a lot of fun. It’s a good group. I know you said you don’t have any friends here yet, so would you want to come next time? It’s not for a couple of weeks but I can text you when it gets closer to the day.
You couldn’t help but smile a big toothy grin. “That would actually be really nice.” You said.
Chris grabbed his phone out of his pocket, unlocked it, and handed it to you. You entered your contact info and handed it back. You didn’t text yourself with his phone because you didn’t want to assume he would actually follow through. He was already being really nice and you didn’t want to be the one to reach out.
He put his phone back in his pocket and turned to leave. He yelled over his shoulder “Talk to you later Y/N.”
“Bye.” You yelled back as you started to walk home. Smiling to yourself you continued on your way. “I think I just met Chris Evans.”
Walking up the back stairs to your studio you heard you phone ding. You unlocked the door, walked inside kicking off your shoes. Fishing your phone out of your back pocket you saw that you had a new text. Clicking it open it read “Hey Y/N, it’s Chris. Just texting so you have my number.”

“ –– wow. ” it’s not so much a critique as it is a g-rated expletive. tripp forces a smile mid-chew and blinks. “ my tastebuds are screaming. gah–– uh, singing. singing. ” he avoids swallowing and as ring-decorated fingers snag a napkin, wide eyes drifting to the tabletop as a small jingle breezes past tensed lips. “ ~ allergic to mushrooms ~ ”
or, alternatively: this is somethin’ new! the caspar slide pt. 2 !! & this time, it’s ‘bout to get funky !! so i’m linc and this is tripp and he’s........ a trip, honestly, so let’s just... yeet on into this ––
( joe keery + 22 + muse 12 ) isn’t that phillip joel “tripp” goodman over there? i heard he joined faction: one after they got back to west ham. it’s funny, cause they were only on the service trip because HIS BANDMATES DUPED HIM INTO THINKING THE SIGN-UP WAS FOR A WOODS-THEMED OPEN MIC GIG. hopefully they fit in there – they’re JAUNTY but also OUTRÉ. oh, i’m sure they’ll be fine.
out the door ! ( tripp goodman: a roadmap )
look up townie family in the dictionary and you’ll find a portrait of the goodmans directly beside. these folks have a looooong flippin’ legacy here in lil’ ole west ham, kansas. it all started with montgomery goodman, a good man, who helped west ham’s founders break ground on this midwestern charmer several centuries ago. and now, the goodmans still live on the same property –– a refurbished farmhouse ( now closer to mcmansion ) surrounded by five acres of roooooollin’ hills. once upon a time, they were farming folk. now, theresa and joel goodman run the town’s one and only veterinary clinic.
honestly, growing up? tripp was a problematic kid. he’d take in frogs from the woods and start his own frog hotels. he’d sneak pets from the clinic to school who “ needed help learning their numbers ”. in class, he’d flick sunflower seeds at the backs of his peers’ heads and, when threatened with discipline, claim he simply “ wanted to see if they’d grow ” . so no, to answer your question–– tripp never really saw the real wrath warranted by his rulebreaking.
in fourth grade, he chose the saxophone as his required instrument. he caused such a commotion in his house, that his parents asked his teachers to suggest something quieter. the viola. the flute. the clarinet. the piano. instruments came and went,;instruments were quickly mastered and abandoned. because dear lord, how many times could they listen to the spongebob theme song played on woodwind ?! on strings ?! once middle school rolled around, little phillip joel knew his way around a whopping total of six instruments, a tally that would only grow in the coming years. eventually, his parents caved and allowed him to keep playing, so long as he respected instrument curfews. they gave song requests to avoid hearing the same pieces on repeat: the goodman household was probably the only one blessed with an oboe-and-beatbox rendition of under the sea. young phillip joel’s take on the issue was simple: not all heroes wore capes.
( tw: domestic unrest, mentions of violence ) theresa and joel split when tripp was 9. just seven months later, tripp’s mother moved in with her girlfriend: tripp’s guitar teacher, ms. lillith. tripp didn’t mind ms. lillith. she was chill. he came to find out she could knock back a chocolate milk almost as fast as he could, and she liked her grilled cheeses with swiss only. his best friend became a thirty-six year old woman who happened to be his mother’s girlfriend. and that was fine. he could dig it. but joel goodman? oh no. his family name was tarnished. the scandal was too much to bear. joel sued for full custody and nearly made it, thanks to hometown politics and loyalties. but then he made one fatal mistake: he crossed his own son.
at 10 years old, fifth grade phillip joel returned home to his father’s after school with three fingernails painted effervescent blue. sidney frasier made me so cool, he gushed as he put his colored nails on proud display. dad, aren’t i so cool? the next day, his dad enrolled him in the town’s peewee football program. he returned home from his first practice with a black eye and a split lip. from a ball, the coach insisted. hit the poor fella square in the face, real strong. phillip joel put up a fight against football; it wasn’t for him. it conflicted with music practice. couldn’t he just play music with ms. lillith instead?
the custody battle persisted. they settled on a parenting schedule. joel contested, consistently, months later. and so the cycle persisted up until phillip joel’s 12th year, when he was knocked out cold on the football field. the broken ribs came from hefty tackles. bruises from the fall. concussion from the impact. but theresa spun it to her advantage: joel had since started coaching the middle school team. this was an instance of parental neglect. and, when the courts didn’t comply, she instructed her son to jump down the stairs. one broken ankle later, and joel goodman was accused of child abuse. his word against his injured son’s. the maneuver won theresa full custody. phillip joel has yet to forgive himself.
after the custody battle’s conclusion, joel stayed in town: but phillip joel didn’t want a thing to do with sharing his name. his mother still scolds him as phillip joel, but to everyone else, he became tripp –– inspired by his knack for, you guessed it!, tumbling over his own two feet.
in high school, tripp was the class clown. always smirking, always grinning, always ready to catch someone off guard. he became a pivotal part of west ham high’s jazz band, and even formed a small group with a few buds: face. they played some school events: homecoming, pep rallies, prom. garage-baked young rock, their songs often preached meetings under bleachers and high school never ending.
in senior year, the band saw a reboot: and after assuming a more indie, spacey sound and a nifty new name –– 1757. –– they saw a rise in local celebrity. coffee shops commissioned them for jam nights. they played on the local radio. so they collectively decided to stick around and see how far they could ride this west ham fame train. with tripp as their frontman, they always leave a memorable impression: he’s not exactly the most run-of-the-mill performer.
1757.’s sound is reminiscent of LANY: i’ve reblogged a few tunes onto tripp’s blog for reference. he’s v much a paul klein / matty healy vibe. big into music. big into losing himself in it.
so what was he up to before the service trip? playin’ tunes. working part-time as a waiter. and brainstorming ways to get out of going on this trip, as soon as he realized his stupid bandmates lied about the form he signed. an open mic in the woods ! pah ! he should have known. but the concept sounded pretty flippin’ cool.
wear our shades on our nose, 'cause we're cool like that ( tripp goodman: the man, the myth, the ledge )
oh god, he’s w e i r d . he believes in goblins and ghosts and aliens ( oh my )!
still VERY VERY close with his mother. v broken up about not being able to get through to her, because it was about to be his parents’ wedding anniversary and they were going to anti-celebrate it with big slices of oreo cheesecake and setting things on fire.
how he feels about coming home to west ham: post apocalyptic version.
uhhhh... can he please get a waffle? specifically a cinnamon raisin waffle with extra cinnamon and a shit ton of syrup? actually. syrup with a side of waffles?
why he was banned from his personal twitter.
“ do you even lift, bruv? ” * proceeds to pick up a teacup & lift his pinkie like a true knock-off british monarch, shitty accent included *
listens to wham! and glam rock. unironically.bluetooth speaker mounted on his bike. no helmet! like an absolute boss. he knows!! wild!! shades on. it’s 2am. it’s dark. but true swag obeys no clock.
catch him biking everywhere stranger things style, actually. his bike’s name is milo because he can roll on for miles. mess with milo and he’ll fuck u up. aka find out if you’re lactose intolerant and slip heavy cream into your meal.
has a strong vendetta against blue doritos. which might take root in some horrific experiences involving cheez wiz, cool ranch, weed, and the new york subway system at 4am on a tuesday. spring break freshman year of college. oof.
he has a lil drawwwwl. tease him about it. he’ll probably blush.
stress-hums chili’s babyback ribs without realizing. catch him singin’ that about to be murdered.
weapon of choice: kindness.
actual weapon of choice: baseball bat.
he will write little jingles to keep morale up. “ so we’re trapped / cash us inside / how bou’ dat ? ”
has a passion for introspective literary quotes. but... has somehow managed to learn each and every one wrong.

Vets Go Upscale to Care for Pets (and Their Owners) When Allegra Brochin and her boyfriend adopted Sprinkles, a feisty white Maltese, last year, they set about finding pet care. “I immediately started looking,” said Ms. Brochin, 23, who works as a communications coordinator for Michael Kors in New York. She saw ads for Bond Vet pop up on her Instagram feed, and when she took in Sprinkles for her shots, she was won over by the look and feel of the clinic, “especially when it’s for a pet you care about and feel responsible for,” she said. Ms. Brochin is not alone in her devotion to her pandemic pet. More than 12.6 million households adopted animals from March to December of last year, according to the American Pet Products Association, helping to propel an increase in visits and revenue to veterinary offices, as new owners took pets in for their first checkup. The heightened demand for veterinary services has drawn investors and others to the market. Landlords — who might previously have spurned tenants associated with unpleasant odors and noise — are more amenable to leasing to the clinics after a year when the vets paid their rent while other businesses fell behind. And architecture firms that specialize in the design of vet space are busier than ever. Tech-savvy start-ups like Bond Vet are promising a reinvention of the experience, with phone apps, round-the-clock telemedicine and boutique storefronts where refreshments (for pet owners) run to LaCroix and cold brew. The pet care business is riding a growth spurt: Morgan Stanley projected that it would be a $275 billion industry in 2030, up from $100 billion in 2019, with vet care the fastest-growing segment over the next decade. “Ten years ago, there was a baby boom,” Arash Danialifar, chief executive of GD Realty Group, a California company that has leased space to a veterinary start-up, said about the proliferation of shops selling children’s fashion. “Now it’s all about pets.” Start-ups make up fewer than 1 percent of the more than 28,000 vet practices across the country, but they are growing quickly. In New York, Small Door Veterinary recently announced it had raised $20 million and planned to go from a single location to 25 by 2025. The firm operates on a membership model, with 24/7 telemedicine and waiting areas with arched, white oak-paneled alcoves that give owners and their pets an intimate place to chill before appointments. Designed by Alda Ly Architecture, the clinics are rented storefronts of 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and cost about $1 million to kit out, said Josh Guttman, Small Door’s co-founder and chief executive. Bond Vet, another New York start-up, models itself on CityMD clinics; it recently raised $17 million and now has six offices, including its first suburban location, in Garden City on Long Island. And in Los Angeles, another membership-based company, Modern Animal, has an office in a high-end shopping district in West Hollywood, with three more to come in the city by year’s end and a dozen clinics in California by 2022, said the company’s founder and chief executive, Steven Eidelman. “I don’t think as a landlord I would have been encouraged to have a vet clinic 15 years ago, but today I would,” said Mr. Danialifar of GD Realty, Modern Animal’s West Hollywood landlord. The start-ups appear positioned to appeal to millennials, who made up the majority of new pet owners during the pandemic. Seventy-six percent of millennials own pets, according to a recent survey, and they are spending generously on their charges. Rebecca Hilton, 34, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif., joined Modern Animal after adopting two kittens, Pinot and Lula, last year and has made use of the company’s app to communicate with the office. She has talked to the doctor via video-chat and has used the app to ask questions and send photos. Today in Business Updated May 24, 2021, 5:00 p.m. ET “I may have called at 2 a.m. once when one of the cats was acting weird,” she said. “It’s helpful not to have to go in every time.” The health system for pets is advancing in other ways that mirror human health care. Meridian Veterinary Real Estate, a developer founded in Dallas in 2016, builds animal hospitals of 10,000 to 25,000 square feet with departments for surgery, oncology, internal medicine and other specialties — often equipped with as much as $10 million in equipment for things like X-rays, CT scans and M.R.I.s. Such developers work with architecture firms versed in vet design, including Rauhaus Freedenfeld & Associates, which is fielding twice as many calls for new business as it did before the pandemic, said Warren Freedenfeld, a principal at the firm. His business and others design interiors with materials that absorb noise — both high frequency (howling) and low frequency (barking) — and without free-standing columns or sharp corners that might invite a dog to lift a leg. Clinics are designed to be “fear free” with soothing colors and, often, separate zones for cats and dogs. Although there may be a flurry of activity now, veterinary real estate has been evolving for decades. Traditionally, vets owned their own practice as well as the building that housed it — often an actual house. That started to change in the 1980s and ’90s with the advent of corporations, known as consolidators, that began to buy up veterinary practices, attracted by the stability of the businesses. The corporations, often backed by private equity or other investment funds, typically take charge of back-office functions such as payroll and the ordering of supplies, leaving the clinical side of the practices to the vets. Around 25 percent of veterinary practices “have been sold to corporate,” said Karen E. Felsted, a veterinary consultant. Some consolidators own hundreds of pet hospitals — “the McDonald’s of the vet space,” said Brian Wine, founder and chief executive of the Wine Group, a brokerage firm that specializes in veterinary real estate. But most consolidators have not been interested in the actual buildings. The vets thus became landlords, receiving rental income from the corporate groups and retaining the ability to sell their buildings to associates on retirement. Now, however, the animal doctors have other options for their properties. Some private equity firms and real estate investment trusts have divisions devoted to veterinary real estate. And increasingly, companies dedicated to it are springing up. Terravet Real Estate Solutions, founded in 2016, now owns more than 100 buildings in 30 states, many of them housing practices owned by consolidators. For instance, Terravet owns the building housing CountryChase Veterinary Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and the American Veterinary Group, which operates practices across the South, owns the business. Hound Properties, founded two years ago, has been buying buildings with an investor-backed fund. And Vetley Capital, started this year, has a portfolio of 20 buildings in nine states, most of them on the small side, ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 square feet and costing around $1 million, said Zach Goldman, the company’s founder and president. The price of real estate has risen, but the returns are generally modest. “It’s the ultimate slow and steady income,” said Tripp Stewart, co-founder and chief executive of Hound Properties, who is also a practicing vet. Despite the interest, there are obstacles to opening pet hospitals. Zoning sometimes limits their locations. In Pasadena, Calif., GD Realty had to request a zoning change for Modern Animal. Because such businesses revolve around animal doctors, who are in demand as veterinary companies expand, there are shortages of vets in some parts of the country, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. The improvements in vet facilities are thus aimed not only at pets and their owners, but also at the doctors themselves, who can choose where they want to work. “It used to be that when you went to a vet, it was a family vet who worked out of a kitchen in an old house,” said Dr. Stewart. “Today, you’re not going to attract new young vets to an old house.” Source link Orbem News #care #owners #pets #Upscale #vets

Jurassic Meteor [Part 10]
““Make sure to keep me and Merel informed. And Charlotte about the ani-“
Stopping herself, Floor moved her eyes around the room, not even once did they spot beautiful red strands.
“Where’s my wife?””
Meteor (Merel/Charlotte/Floor) (Romantic pairing)
Words: 1283
Other parts (x)
“You should put that in the brochure. Eventually, one of these things will eat somebody.”
Just about catching what Sharon had said, Floor stepped into the chaos filled control room. The large screen kept flipping between security cameras all around the park, an order of shutting down all the attractions had seemingly been issued. Security guards were all over the place, giving orders and telling the visitors a lie about faulty equipment to get them to the center. Containment crews were still out, doing all in their power to find the Indominus. Even helicopters had been airborne.
The people working in the control room were all busy making calls to workers and tell them about the situation, most of them being hysteric and scared. That’s when she noticed Merel. She was crunched down next to Anette, her arms placed on her desk and with eyes carefully watching the monitor there. Floor knew that she couldn’t sit still for long. She had never been a person to sit in the background and observe. Merel needed to be out there. But where should she start? Maybe Floor should suggest that she join the containment crew or the security. She had worked with them before after all.
Floor didn’t even know what she herself should do.
“Update?” the brunette said in a calm and deep voice, her insides anything but.
Both Anette and Merel turned, the blonde getting up from the ground while Anette pulled up the event screen on her monitor.
“We’ve started the evacuation of all attractions, so far no major objections from the visitors. All employees have been informed of the situation. No signs of the Indominus yet, but the containment crew is on it and they’re currently scanning the jungle around the West Plains. A bus was reported to have motor failure and the passengers are now awaiting to come and get picked up, but they’re close to a guard tower so they shouldn’t be in any danger.”
Good. Her staff was handling it well.
“Make sure to keep me and Merel informed. And Charlotte about the ani-“
Stopping herself, Floor moved her eyes around the room, not even once did they spot beautiful red strands.
“Where’s my wife?”
Reacting quickly to those words, Merel too began to look for her, Anette looking panicked. Had Charlotte just taken off? That wasn’t like her.
“Call her.” Floor ordered, Anette starting to tap away on her screen.
“She went there, to the plains. She thought that… that she could bring the visitors into the veterinary clinic to keep them safe.” Sharon blurted out, her eyes not even meeting the others.
Floor could feel her heart dropping to the ground, her bones turning into ice.
Her loved one was out there…out there with that thing…
She met Merel’s gaze and saw the same worry being reflected in them. They had to get Charlotte back.
“Call the containment crew!” Floor shouted, Sharon flinching before she followed the order.
“She’s not picking up.” Anette said and tapped away on the screen once more, this time to the security camera on the outside of the clinic on the West Plains. In the horizon, an outline of a bus could be seen. Along with several dinosaurs passing it. Floor recognized them as herbivores and of no immediate threat.
“Keep calling her!” Merel closed to yelled, her body moving so that it stood next to Floor’s own, her teeth mercilessly biting on her lower lip.
“Listen.” Sharon said, pressing on the speaker option for the call she had at the moment.
“Repeating, trees are blocking our way. Cannot reach the bus. Sending men by foot. Over.”
“What about Ms. Wessels? Is she with you? Over.” Merel was quick to ask, the call going silent for an unusually long amount of time.
“She… she did not come here with us.” We do not know her position. Over.”
Not even thinking twice, both Floor and Merel rushed towards the elevator and the emergency stairs, pushing the exit door open and rushing down the stairwell.
“We need guns and we need a car!” Merel exclaimed in a shaking voice, her feet close to jumping over three steps at a time.
“There are range rovers in the garage to the left when we get out. Guns along the wall.” Floor responded in a breathless voice, her mind too panicked to even letting her lungs take a breath.
When they reached the bottom, Merel pushed open the door and went towards the garage. People were running in and out of there, workers just getting back from them having to close attractions. But Floor paid them no mind as her feet took her to the closest available rover, her hand yanking the door open on the passenger side, already knowing that Merel was the faster driver.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid!” Merel kept repeating as she got into the driver’s side, her hands carrying two rifles and a smaller handgun along with an ammunition bag.
“We can tell her that later, but for now, just drive!”
Slamming the door shut, Merel put the car into drive and sped off, nearly hitting a couple of people in the process.
“What the hell was going through her head when she decided to do this?!” Floor yelled in a panic, her stomach feeling sick and muscles tense from all the worry.
“Probably something idiotic that she picked up from you.” Merel responded coldly, making anger flare up in Floor’s chest.
“Leaving everything behind and not caring about the consequences is more like your style.”
The impossibly tight clenching of Merel’s hands around the steering wheel was the only reply she gave, Floor knowing without a doubt that Merel would have lashed out more if they hadn’t been in a car. She tried not to feel guilty about what she had said, but she was fooling herself. They couldn’t keep going like this, it wasn’t healthy for anyone and especially now that Charlotte might be in danger. One of them had to be the bigger person. And Floor had to admit defeat in order to get her wife back. Carrying around anger would only bring her and Merel down. And Floor would do anything, absolute anything to get Charlotte back.
“Look, I’m… I’m sorry.”
Watching how Merel released her death grip slightly, Floor let the words she had just said roll around in her mind. She had never thought she would say them directly to Merel, but now that she had done it, it felt good. Floor had seen a whole other side to the Indominus project and she had realized how wrong it truly had been to create a new dinosaur. She had felt stupid and humiliated. She had had truly no idea what they were up against, no one knew. And now Floor had to face the consequences. She had to admit that Merel had been right all along.
“I know.”
------------
Merel knew that it was far from a sufficient answer, but she had been too shocked to say anything else. Hearing an apology had been the last thing that Merel had expected. Maybe it was because of the situation, triggered by Charlotte’s disappearance and something that was forced, but the blonde heard the sincerity behind the words. Through the pounding of blood in her hears. Merel was so panicked that it was a wonder that she managed to drive in the first place.
Floor and Charlotte might have broken her heart, but she still cared deeply about the two of them. Hearing of Charlotte’s unknown position had made her feel worried beyond belief and she couldn’t even begin to imagine what Floor must be feeling at the moment.

A Legacy of Lebanon’s War: ‘Land Mines’ Left by Beirut’s Dogs
By Anne Barnard, NY Times, Oct. 23, 2017
BEIRUT, Lebanon--On a quiet, expensive Beirut street, the dog walkers began to appear. It was precisely that moment in a Mediterranean evening when the light turns golden and the bougainvillea blossoms seem to glow from within. The lengthening shadows magnified a series of lumps on the sidewalk, like cairns marking a mountain trail.
On closer inspection, they were hills of poop.
Jad Nawfal, 34, paused with his German shepherd, Boiko. As the dog sniffed a pile, the human regarded a newish sign that said: “Please! Clean up after your dog.”
“To Lebanese people,” he said, wrinkling his nose, “it’s kind of embarrassing to pick up poop.”
How about picking their way past dog feces on the streets?
If it is not on their personal property, he said, “They just don’t care.”
That is exactly the problem, said Carole Babikian, part of a small band of Beirutis trying to drag their city into the 20th-century world of poop-scooping.
“If you feel you belong to a nation, you will take care of this nation,” Ms. Babikian said. “But here everybody has an idea of his own Lebanon.”
Ask anyone here about canine excrement and the conversation moves quickly to concepts of citizenship, nationhood, belonging, Lebanon’s sectarian political system and ultimately the civil war that reshaped the country from 1975 to 1990.
Civic activists say those years of sectarian violence and lawlessness, and the ensuing mistrust, destroyed Lebanon’s sense of shared public space, whether physical or political.
During the civil war, “people were afraid of the streets and the sidewalks,” said Jad Chaaban, a university professor who is a member of Beirut Madinati--Arabic for “Beirut, My City”--a group that made a stir last year by taking the radical step of running in municipal elections on a platform of improving public services.
After the war, reconstruction was carried out with “almost total disregard” for public streetscapes, he said.
“People don’t feel that they own anything,” he said. “They don’t own the street. They don’t belong. The sidewalk is a very nice metaphor for the Lebanese situation.”
In spite of that, or because of it, a loose-knit coalition--an underdog movement, dare we say--has sprung up to battle the problem of soiled streets. It includes just a few people: Ms. Babikian and other neighborhood boosters, animal rights activists, a veterinarian and the politician son of an assassinated president.
What they shared, at first, was a tenuous hope that dog droppings--unlike, say, government corruption or the war in neighboring Syria--might be a problem small enough to solve. What they found instead was that it contained nearly every classic Lebanese problem.
Lebanon’s weak government has failed to deliver public goods that it should be able to afford, like sewage treatment, clean water, consistent law enforcement or reliable electricity. Clean sidewalks are not even on the agenda.
So about two years ago, Ms. Babikian and several other advocates, all of whom had gotten used to feces-free streets while living abroad, took matters into their own hands. Parallel efforts began in the largely Christian east side of Beirut and the largely Muslim west, a divide that itself is a legacy of the war.
On both sides, they hit fierce resistance.
Ms. Babikian said officials told her neighborhood group, Achrafieh 2020, which pushes for pedestrian-friendly streets in east Beirut, that working with it might anger people in the west. That exasperated the activists, who wondered, why not work with both?
A brief collaboration with trash collectors died during a contract imbroglio that left mountains of garbage nationwide in 2015.
And advocates struggled to enlist foreign domestic workers, often underpaid and overworked, who do much of the dog walking in a city where pets are largely a luxury.
“It was a total fiasco,” said Dr. Maher Yehyia, 42, a veterinarian who had started his own campaign in western Beirut. I had found his number on a box on a lamppost. It was supposed to contain free plastic gloves for dog walkers, but it was empty.
When Dr. Yehyia returned in 2006 from Canada, where he had moved as a child during the war, he set about picking up after his Chihuahua.
“People thought I was crazy,” he said.
He did not proselytize much at first. Fouled streets were a bigger issue in the Christian east, since most traditional Muslims do not keep dogs in their homes. Veterinary patients on the west side are 80 percent cats, he said, while in the east they are 80 percent dogs.
But with growing secularism and returning expatriates, the number of dogs in his practice tripled, a trend he saw reflected underfoot.
So Dr. Yehyia started to clear the “land mines” outside his clinic. Then he hung 300 glove dispensers around town. Fellow vets started calling--not to join him, but to accuse him of self-promotion for printing his clinic’s name and number on the boxes.
A city official arranged a meeting, then canceled. The gloves vanished; Dr. Yehyia saw vendors on the seafront using them to hand out roasted corn.
For the veterinarian, the whole episode was a reminder of why there is no law requiring cleaning up after dogs in the first place: the lax enforcement and rampant use of bribes and connections that doomed other recent public-minded laws, like those requiring seatbelt use and banning smoking in restaurants.
“The war made it so no one respects the laws,” he said. “If you stop at the red light, they will shout at you and say, ‘Do you think you are in Europe?’”
He did find sympathy in one quarter: Ms. Babikian’s group. They had added poop to their agenda as they held street fairs promoting walking and biking.
Her group has more political connections, and a bit more traction. It was founded by a member of Parliament, Nadim Gemayel, the son of the assassinated president.
The neighborhood group released ads on social media showing a bearded hipster, first cursing, “I stepped in it,” then holding his head high on a cleaner street.
Lately, Beirut’s city government has posted some signs urging people to scoop the poop. But Ms. Babikian has pushed in vain for “a real campaign”--sustained, high-profile, on television.
The most obvious solution--a fine, like the one that transformed New York City’s sidewalks in 1978--would be pointless here. Those for smoking and traffic violations are routinely ignored.
Another problem, said Gaby Ferneine, a city council member, is that Beirut has no real city police, only a tiny municipal guards force.
But there was a glimmer of hope in Sioufi, the district where Mr. Nawfal walked his German shepherd. The next pair to pass were Josine Pacaro, 46, and Bruno, a miniature Doberman. Ms. Pacaro, a house worker from the Philippines, wore a pink uniform and plastic gloves.
Asked if she scooped, she said: “Yes, of course. We are the ones to step in it!”
She became a convert after a single misstep “on the kaka.”
“Enough,” she said. “I pick it up.”
She gazed down a line of dog deposits, of various vintages, leading to one of the city’s few public parks. Flies hovered, gleaming in the sunset.
“I try to convince them,” she said. “But, you know--stubborn people!”
