In many ways, cql builds up the 'fraternal' element of his bond with Jiang Cheng specifically because Lan Wangji has stepped into the role of 'best friend.'
Book Wei Wuxian genuinely believed Lan Wangji disliked and did not particularly care about him, basically until he died. Between Lan Wangji's lack of social skills, their many points of conflict, and the weird behavior engendered by Lan Wangji's feelings about having an illicit crush on a difficult person, interfacing with Wei Wuxian's general flightiness and many non-lwj priorities, they barely had a relationship.
They were not discernibly 'friends.'
That one Burial Mounds visit was, from wwx's perspective, more bonding than lwj had allowed to happen in the entire time they'd known each other hitherto, including while they fought a war together (lwj deliberately assigned himself to wwx's theater of war but never said wwx was the reason he was in jiangnan, and spent most of that time arguing) for actual years.
Wwx was aware by the end that lwj didn't hate him, that as his relationships went by the end, things between them were 'not that bad.' But he didn't think that he liked him, or that they were at all close. He had no particular reason to believe that freezing him out would affect or had affected Lan Wangji on a personal level.
While, in fact, Lan Wangji was ferociously pining for his self-destructive ass.
Since the censored drama could not take that setup and invert it with the heavily foreshadowed surprise twist forgotten love confession etc, or milk the divide in perception for dramatic irony, because it wasn't allowed to be gay, the relationship arc with Lan Wangji becomes vastly more straightforward, and gels way earlier.
(Hence the insertion of the Yin Iron Fetchquest, to let them even spend enough time together for a strong friendship to make any sense.)
With attendant impacts on the characterization, and with the result that while Jiang Cheng gets more narrative space in terms of screen time and explicit sympathy, he also gets heavily crowded out in terms of 'importance of relationship' within what should be his time period.
In cql, Wei Wuxian intensely pair-bonds with Lan Wangji basically from day one. In mdzs, for all his genuine interest in and attachment to the guy, which might very well have had sexual and romantic undertones he wasn't noticing, he doesn't consider him that important. He failed to recognize him, the first time they met again after a year apart.
This is just a cool guy he knows and likes to tease, and would have liked to win over into friendship, had life not Happened and gotten in the way.
This is a "it's okay if he hates me, I don't hate him" kind of person, for Wei Wuxian.
He's not answerable on any level to Lan Wangji; having a private conversation after the Wen Chao murder showdown where he pleads for Lan Wangji's trust would make no sense whatsoever.
Back when I was watching cql but hadn't touched mdzs someone--(was this you @rhinefall?) said the show had really overemphasized the pseudo-familial, fraternal elements of the story, at the expense of wangxian.
(Which I found deeply off-putting ngl because it makes it sound like the show made up a lot of the meaty content there, which it did not. Its major invention in that area is jiang cheng's crush on wen qing.)
And it's like. Looking over them both. I can see where that statement is coming from, in that The Untamed frontloaded jiang cheng, gave jiang yanli extra appearances, and generally expanded the ratio of page/screen time for the backstory in order to let that carry more of the obvious narrative arc. Since the romance arc could not play out as in the novel, due to censorship.
But being able to compare them now, I honestly feel like what cql actually wound up exaggerating most was...wei wuxian's relationship with lan wangji???
Because. They had to take the romance out. But they also had to make them love each other or there's no point. Which means wangxian had to be friends.
Which in turn means that in the live action version teenage and young adult Wei Wuxian consistently pays attention to, focuses on, confides in, and routinely interacts with Lan Wangji very much on purpose, as part of a relationship he values, considers strong, and is making an effort to maintain.
None of which is true, in the novel.

Wen Ying: If Wei Wuxian was a Wen.
Inspired by [Source]
Wei Wuxian was found in yilling by the lesser branch of the wen clans, barely clinging to the intergraty of the overbearing Wen Clan. They were almost ostracised and left to fend for themselves.
Under Wen Qing and Wen Ning, both younger siblings aimed to make their circumstances better, until fourth uncle brought in their new ward from the street.
These three became siblings and grew up together and Wei Wuxian was able to bring attention to the smaller branch of the clan by his sheer talent.
With a strong golden care and talent in archery that can rival any other gathers the attention of Wen Ruohan.
Wei Wexian was a promising disciple, he climbed the ranks and even gained the trust to Wen Ruohans projects of trying to control a beast core. The Wen clan leader even encouraged Wei Wuxians obsession with Demonic Cultivation. He even trusted Wei Wuxian to go on the retreat hosted by the Lan clan along with the other sects, Wen ning, Wen Qing and his son were pretty much only there as ordered, while Wei Wuxian was tasked to memorise everything about Cloud Recess for a future attack and to get any information and closley kept secrets of the Lans sect.
He was Wen Ruohans most trusted spy.
Because of his demonic cultivation, Wei Ying was able to push most of the limits, one such ability was able to gain insight into the future he calls Demonic cultivation. He hops onto his own soul and projects insight to his future self and saw what would happen if he followed Wen Ruohan blindly.
He saw his future, the burial mounds, the desturction of the Wens including his maritial siblings deaths and strangely, the attention of Lan wangi kissing him blind-folded?
It shocked him out of the divination and he puked blood, resentment energy has a temperment on the body. Wei Wuxian needed a plan.
His Master would fall to the hands of a spy. Yao Guangyao.
He could easily take his place, Yao Guangyao would destroy all of the sects, and weaken them just to save his own reputation. He could take his place and his own plot. But unlike Yao Guangyao he had people to protect, the wens.
And his future they all discriminated against the Wens even after and were overally cruel to his branch that raised him along with his maritial siblings.
It's what drew him to demonic cultivation and tainted his own core to protect his own. He's going to have to be different...
If he starts with Lotus Pier and has the Wens stationed to protect them he could barter to be the man to create the supservery office instead of Wen Ruohans useless son to escalate things.
Lotus pier would be the base that could turn the tide against Wen Ruohan.
He bit his lip, it would be too late for Cloud recess but he'd already given the information by now.
Working as a spy, killing Yao Guangyao after he freed Lan Xichen and working as the spy giving intel to the Sects. It was working smoothley...too Smoothly.
It wasn't until he worked with Golden core-melting hand and accidently experimented with Demonic Cultivation trying to broaden the generals 'range' he purposfully inverted the wave destroying the general in the process.
Wei Wuxian was getting away with too many mistakes and Wen Ruohan had lost his patience. He attacked Wei Wuxian who barely escaped with his life and had Xue Yang [who previously worked with Yao Guang] to take over Wei Yings work.
Beaten blodied and blue he crawled towards yilling, he had to get to Lotus Pier and warn them he collapsed pulling his robes together and it began to rain and rolled his eyes skyward.
He was so unlucky no matter which life he was in!
Until the rain stopped, he opened his eyes and balked to see Lan Zhan staring down at him coldly.
Wei Ying opened his mouth then shut it.
If the second jade could help him get to lotus pier then he could turn this around.

on miscommunications in SHL, from perspective of the novel's fan
As some of you already know, I wrote quite a few posts comparing TYK and SHL; of them, several were critical of the show – mostly ones talking about changes made to the main ship’s dynamic in adaptation. I have talked about SHL creating a difference in morality between Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing where there was none in the novel, and about it pushing the senior-junior dynamic when the novel highlighted several times they see each other as equals (last section of this post); but I had trouble approaching what I see as the biggest flaw in SHL’s portrayal, the thing that ultimately ensured I could not view show WenZhou as the same ship I adored and rooted for in the novel.
Miscommunications.
Constant miscommunications. That lasted all the way to the finale and were never resolved. I already talked about the problem with that from a perspective of treating the show as a stand-alone thing (last two paragraphs in this post), but when considered that way, it’s only a failure to stick the landing on a relationship arc.
However, from a perspective of SHL being an adaptation of TYK, having WenZhou constantly misunderstand each other like that... pretty much inverts their original dynamic. In-story, it removes the very foundation of their relationship, the thing that drew them to each other and ensured they wanted to stay together; out-of-story, it sorely misses one of the main appeal points of the ship.
Novel WenZhou simply get each other. During their first meeting, before they even interact once, Wen Kexing can tell at a glance that Zhou Zishu is not a beggar but merely sunbathing; and Zhou Zishu thinks to himself, amused, that in the vast sea of people he still unexpectedly met a zhiji, the one who understood.
It is not that they completely live in each other’s heads, of course; Wen Kexing initially follows Zhou Zishu because he suspects the latter might be after the Lapis Armor, while Zhou Zishu spends much of a novel trying to determine how serious Wen Kexing’s flirting is – but in general, they never once have a serious falling out. There are even a few scenes that look like they are setting up a misunderstanding, only for the novel to subvert that expectation – my favorite example of this is Zhou Zishu learning that Wen Kexing set fire to Zhang Chengling's room:
Zhou Zishu lifted his wine pot and poured himself the last drops. He didn’t mention the fire. He knew without doubt that if Wen Kexing ever wanted to kill Zhang Chengling, that would be as easy to him as crushing an ant; there was no need to create a whole commotion with the fire and choose the moment one was absent to execute it. It was not a case of malice, but rather a warning. (chapter 25, sparklingwater tl)
This mutual understanding is the first thing the novel establishes for the relationship, and it remains a constant throughout; it is not that novel WenZhou's dynamic is without tension or growth, it is just that the tension is maintained via other means, and growth happens in other areas. This aspect of the dynamic serves instead as a 'hook', both for the characters and for the reader: it is the reason WenZhou can’t let go of each other, and it is the reason we readers want them to be together, root for them.
(continuing under cut)
And initially, the show seems to set up the same dynamic: there’s the same ‘he’s just sunbathing’ first meeting, there’s Wen Kexing softly whispering “I think of you as my zhiji…” – except then it is all but tossed out in favor of dramatic ‘break-ups’ over things that wouldn’t (didn’t, in some cases) make novel WenZhou bat an eye, misunderstandings, hiding things from each other and outright lying, making decisions for each other – which continues all the way to the finale. So it’s not even that the show makes them work for that mutual understanding that comes naturally to their novel counterparts; literally the last thing we see of show WenZhou in the finale is Wen Kexing forcing onto Zhou Zishu the kind of life Zhou Zishu flat out refused before (“I would rather live freely for ten days than live against my own will for ten years”, episode 14) by lying to him – if there was a way to land further away from novel's dynamic, I cannot think of it. And even though the special then shows the couple happy and in sync, it’s only believable because ‘couple solves their misunderstandings, lives happily ever after’ is a storytelling staple, and we naturally use it to bridge the gap between the finale and the special – but that arc isn't actually in the show, isn't even really set up by the show (have they ever solved any of their misunderstandings without outside intervention?..), and looking only at what’s there, the insistent use of the word zhiji begins to feel inapt, as the couple miscommunicates again and again.
Putting aside what picture that paints for the show as its own thing, those misunderstandings also actively contradict the dynamic set up in the novel. As in, some of them rewrite actual scenes from the novel to feature ~drama~ that was never there, while others have characters react to situations analogous to those in the novel in completely different ways. To demonstrate, I’m going to go through the moments that threw me off when watching, pointing out the discrepancies with the novel’s portrayal.
• I have mentioned episode 9’s “I didn’t realize that you’re actually crazy” scene enough times already, but I’d be remiss to pass it over. Even putting aside the uncomfortable implications of it when compared to Zhou Zishu’s falling out with his shidi in Qi Ye, the scene remains deeply OOC. As I mentioned in the beginning of this meta, Zhou Zishu was even willing to calmly and rationally think about Wen Kexing’s motives when it concerned Chengling’s life, why would he be so disturbed by deaths of random strangers who clearly walked into a trap by their own stupidity? Tian Ya Ke Zishu doesn’t even bat an eye knowing that Wen Kexing’s revenge plot entails wiping out a huge percentage of jianghu ‘heroes’ after luring them into the Ghost Valley, just makes plans to go pick him up after the bloodbath. The show, understandably, couldn’t go this far; but to have Zhou Zishu take a stand for morality and justice here, when what Wen Kexing did is not in any way worse than what he himself has been doing with Tian Chuang, to have him react so emotionally before taking even a moment to consider why Wen Kexing would do it… For all that pretty talk about soulmates, show Zhou Zishu doesn’t even take one step of comparing Wen Kexing’s actions to his own and wondering if Wen Kexing, similarly to himself in the past, believes he is doing those bad things for good reasons.
Honestly, if I ever seem biased towards show Wen Kexing, this scene is why. No matter how outwardly confident he acts, this scene was him extending trust; he truly believed Zhou Zishu would be his zhiji, the one who’d understand his everything, but… learned that part of him was unacceptable even to this person – that even the leader of Tian Chuang, the man who commanded assassins and spies and was the first among them, found him to be a monster. And it’s just so sad, especially when compared to the novel? Where Wen Kexing can explain to Zhou Zishu how he is the most dangerous Valley Master in history, having kept the position for eight years when no one else lasted more than three, having killed all who stood against him, and Zhou Zishu will tell him he’d take him away and keep him? Where Wen Kexing can bite Zhou Zishu bloody, and Zhou Zishu will just laughingly call him a madman and then cuddle with him to sleep?
Novel Wen Kexing can show the worst of himself and still be accepted; show Wen Kexing barely does anything and faces immediate rejection. Isn’t it kind of tragic?
But enough about this one. To conclude, the show chooses to create a high-emotion ‘break-up’ scene here, completely overwriting the original characterization and dynamic for it.
• Next scene is in episode 13, and some of the dialogue in it – “Is your surname Rong?” – “My surname is not Rong. I'm angry that I didn't get a chance to see that guy surnamed Rong; otherwise, I would kill him whenever I see him” – is taken near word-for-word from the novel (though in the novel these lines are part of a different scene). However, Wen Kexing’s reaction of angrily walking out afterwards is show-only; in the novel, Zhou Zishu says “Oh? I’ve guessed wrongly then,” and they continue on with the conversation. Moreover, there are only a couple instances in the novel when Wen Kexing gets in any way angry at Zishu (and one of them is out of worry, scolding Zishu while tending to his injury), and about… four moments when Wen Kexing is the first to walk away, none of them in anger. Show Wen Kexing’s irritation seems to stem from Zishu trying to ‘trick’ him into an answer; but trying to outsmart each other into revealing their true identities is actually something novel WenZhou play at with great relish during early chapters. And even that one time Zhou Zishu goes too far with that, Wen Kexing’s reaction is to try and one-up him, not walk away (obviously the exact method of one-upment couldn’t make it into the show, but the general idea of Wen Kexing reacting to provocation with a provocation of his own could’ve been kept I think).
And sure, for show Wen Kexing this reaction might not’ve been out of character; after all, this version of him is more immature and impulsive. But when coming from the perspective of the novel’s setup, this just looks like making up a problem out of thin air.
• The next scene that had gotten unexpectedly argumentative is the conversation in episode 14, after the fight with Ye Baiyi and before Wen Kexing runs off into the rain to grieve on his own.
Thing is, I think the change in Zishu’s response in the show does make some sense, but this scene still fits into a bigger pattern of creating confrontations where there was none, so I’m including it.
So, in the novel, Ye Baiyi actually tells Zhou Zishu that he doesn’t have a way to treat his injury. And Zishu didn’t really expect him to, so for him, nothing changes – while Wen Kexing learns that the person he’s come to love will die soon. The following scene is Wen Kexing trying to process that sudden, unexpected grief, while Zhou Zishu remains stable (if confused by Wen Kexing’s emotional reaction). The method suggested by Ye Baiyi in the show is brought up later in the novel by Wu Xi, however. And at that time, Zhou Zishu actually held some hope – except then he learns what that method entails, and realizes he can’t accept the price. So that hope only hurts him – he even thinks he’d rather not have had any. But Wen Kexing, by this time, have already lived with the grief of eventual loss for some time, so his reaction is less overt than in the rain scene, and he can give Zishu the space to process his feelings without bringing up his own.
The show, however, rolls these scenes into one. So on one side we have grief-stricken Wen Kexing, and on the other side we have Zhou Zishu who’d just had his hope snuffed out, both of them trying to process their respective pains at the same time. Thus Zhou Zishu going “I'm the one about to die. [...] Whom are you acting sad for?” in response to Wen Kexing’s monologuing; he is too caught in his own raw emotions to be gentle with Wen Kexing’s.
It does make sense, as I said; but I do wonder how necessary it was to combine those scenes. Aside from making WenZhou have another ‘break-up’, another shift it fits with is the compression of the novel’s character arc for Zhou Zishu into the first half of the show. Which I think was to make room for the character beats brought on by additions of Four Seasons Manor and Prince Jin subplots, but unfortunately, ended up creating a bit of a dead space for Zhou Zishu’s character in the finale, as he ends up standing sadly to the side for much of it while other characters do their things, a guest in his own story. So in the end, I can’t say the changes to this scene do any good work; and again, it feels like creating confrontation for its own sake.
• Then, episode 15 features yet another ‘break-up’. Zhou Zishu tries to convince Wen Kexing to “not let the hatred blind [his] eyes and affect [his] judgment on the Five Lakes Alliance”; then, when it becomes clear Wen Kexing will not be moved, goes “Alright. We walk different paths. I can't persuade you. Do whatever you want. Let's go our separate ways.”
Thing is… this difference of opinion is entirely fostered by changes to characterization made in the show. Novel Wen Kexing’s plot is set up in such a way that whoever his enemy is, he will eventually deliver himself into Wen Kexing’s trap; more importantly, it is designed in such way that Wen Kexing does not have to scheme and commit atrocities in the human world, as his enemies drown jianghu in blood all on their own. So there is no such moment where Wen Kexing explicitly shows bloodthirst and hatred towards the five among whom his enemy is hidden, or creates extra trouble for them; he just waits around for the domino pieces to finish falling. At the same time, novel Zhou Zishu would not defend any of those jianghu ‘heroes’ either; he is all too well aware of their skeletons, and even more aware of his own. Could a man who exterminated a whole household down to the little child, not for any crime but simply to set up a political opponent, really rebuke anyone for the innocent collateral of their plans?
• The next scene is in episode 17, with another conversation from the novel taking an odd turn. Here’s how it goes in the novel:
(chapter 45, tl wenbuxing)
(after this, Wen Kexing turns away to bully– ahem, help Zhang Chengling with his training; the conversation between WenZhou doesn’t continue further)
The show’s conversation starts similarly:
“Does it hurt?” – “Why don't you give it a try?” – “Look. It's been so many years, I've only met you, a friend with similar ideas. Can you not die?”
But then it continues with Zhou Zishu turning away as he says “I'll try my best,” instead of novel Zishu’s more candid answer, and Wen Kexing notices too: “Turn around. Look at me. Say it again,” to which Zhou Zishu shoots back with, well: “I don't want to look at you. I can't stand your pretentious actions, hiding behind a mask and not being truthful at all.”
Once again, a scene in the novel that didn’t include any arguing suddenly becomes some kind of confrontation in the show.
• I already wrote about the show adding a whole arc of Wen Kexing hiding his identity as the Valley Master; that post goes into more detail, but in short, this is a misunderstanding created out of the situation the novel originally used to demonstrate how well-matched WenZhou are. Novel WenZhou confirm that both of them already know each other’s identities soon after the rain scene, in one conversation. However, in the show, Wen Kexing feels the need to hide his identity, completely missing Zhou Zishu’s hints that he already figured it out – while Zhou Zishu doesn’t seem to get that Wen Kexing’s reluctance is a direct result of his previous actions, and keeps waiting for Wen Kexing to open up of his own will. This creates a multi-episode stalemate that lasts until Ye Baiyi shows up and forces the issue.
• Then there is, of course, Wen Kexing leaving Zhou Zishu with a white lie as he returns to the Ghost Valley in episode 31, saying he only needs to pick something up while in truth he is making preparations to finish his revenge. In the novel, Wen Kexing doesn’t even need to say anything – Zhou Zishu had long figured out the general outline of his scheme. All he says is that he’s going, and Zhou Zishu already knows where and for what.
And this is also the reason why the misunderstanding in episode 32, with Zhou Zishu thinking Wen Kexing is in trouble and leaping to his defense, rings so untrue when coming from the novel; how come Zhou Zishu hadn’t figured Wen Kexing’s plan, or at least that there is a plan? Aren’t they supposed to be a matched pair of masterminds? (Of course, the situation is not OOC for the show's iteration of the characters…)
• Then, after Wen Kexing returns, we hit another misunderstanding, somewhat similar to the Valley Master arc but this time with Zishu hiding things: Zhou Zishu does not tell Wen Kexing he had removed the nails and has days to live at best, while Wen Kexing seems to either miss or misinterpret his obvious distress, never even asking what’s wrong. This, again, doesn’t mesh with the novel dynamic: Wen Kexing is attentive enough to catch even smallest signs of Zishu’s pain, even when the latter puts on a tough facade or thinks it’s no big deal, and quick to take care of him; while Zhou Zishu, once he begins to entertain the possibility Wen Kexing might be serious with his advances, never sugarcoats his situation with the nails, never gives Wen Kexing any false hopes or promises.
• I have already talked enough about Zhou Zishu drugging Wen Kexing and going off to die on his own in episode 35 (second link in the beginning of this post, also the last section), so very short version: this action has more in common with the way Zhou Zishu treats his shidi Jiuxiao in Qi Ye than with anything between novel WenZhou. And in the novel, it is heavily implied that the difference in treatment stems from Zishu seeing Jiuxiao as a child and Wen Kexing as a capable adult who knows what he’s doing. Moreover, novel Zhou Zishu is so careful not to make Wen Kexing’s choices for him that he actually asks if Wen Kexing wants his injuries treated in the finale – he wouldn’t force Wen Kexing to live if Wen Kexing was unwilling to. But show Zishu would rather drug Wen Kexing and run off than give Wen Kexing a chance to make his own decision.
• And, of course, show Wen Kexing suffers from the same affliction, preferring to lie to Zhou Zishu and force him to live in episode 36. Interestingly, there is a scene in the novel that can be compared to this one: during the first part of Puppet Manor arc, Zhou Zishu is heavily injured, and Wen Kexing, faced with this reminder of his beloved's mortality, thinks about the method to save Zishu’s life that Zishu rejected, the one that requires destroying his martial arts – and is tempted to make the choice for Zishu. Note that unlike the situation in the show, Wen Kexing wouldn't even be sacrificing anything of his own to keep his beloved – literally the only argument against this course of action is Zishu’s unwillingness. Except Wen Kexing snaps out of it with just one sentence from Zishu: "Others don't understand, but do you not as well?" Wen Kexing does understand, and he stops. He only ever considered it in the first place because the thought of losing Zishu hurt so much, but in the end, just as Zishu with him, he'd rather respect his beloved's choice and bear the pain of loss himself than trap his beloved into an unhappy life against his wishes.
And this concludes the list of the moments that made me go "novel WenZhou would never". Of course, there is a possibility that some of those changes had to do with c-nsorship; that aside from mandated bad ending, they couldn't have the couple be too close or too perfectly matched. But with the number and volume of those changes, it begins to look more like a deliberate choice to step away from the novel dynamic. Which, I guess, is only one change among many; and some people even find the show's iteration of the relationship preferable.
But I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the resulting dynamic is almost an antithesis of the original one; and taken together with other changes, the show’s and the novel’s main couples end up having almost nothing in common.

People are bringing up a lot the fact that CQL fans praise the “what is black, what is white” (孰黑孰白) narrative as something that elevates the series over the novel, and I’ve been sort of thinking about this topic for a little while and have not had yet a fully developed response to this argument. But I’ve been stuck particularly on the symbolic/imagery aspect of the argument and wanted to share some thoughts already.
I’ve seen argued that it is in part the addition of the black and white symbolism that elevates these discussions about ethics and interpretation. I can however only consider it a dubious argument since the opposition between black and white is a very obvious and common imagery that has been repeated in literature over and over again, a metaphor encoded at the linguistic level. There is, after all, chinese idioms like 黑白不分 (literally: being unable to tell black from white, figuratively: unable to distinguish wrong from right) or 黑白分明 (literally: black and white separate clearly, figuratively: being aware of boundaries clearly). Since the construction 孰X孰Y is used to compare and contrast generally two opposing ideas, asking to distinguish between these two extremes (e.g.: 孰对孰错/孰真孰假/孰优孰劣), the link between the CQL’s 孰黑孰白 and ideas rooted in these idioms (ie. 黑白不分, 黑白分明) appears obvious even to someone with very limited Chinese like me.
The novel itself uses another idiom that mobilises the opposition of black and white, 颠倒黑白 (literally: “to invert black and white”, figuratively: to willfully distort the truth) in order to represent how the sects frame MianMian’s defense of WWX and her argument that WWX had not killed indiscriminately when liberating the Wen remnants.
“[...]You’re still arguing for him, calling white black (颠倒黑白) no matter how irrational it is. Ha, women will always be women.”
[...]
“Irrational?” she fumed. “Calling white black? I’m just being considerate as it stands. What does it have to do with the fact that I’m a woman? You can’t be rational with me so you’re attacking me with other things?”
In short, it is a useful imagery, partly because it is a well-established shorthand for these ideas, but as a result hardly one that stands out as innovative or creative, or could be argued to have elevated a work of fiction by its mere inclusion.
Moreover, I cannot help but feel like the choice to mobilise the idea of black and white more explicitly in the dialogue between Wangxian is partly tied to the visual contrast already present in the novel’s character designs of its two main characters. The visual contrast between LWJ’s white robes and WWX’s black robes in the novel is used to illustrate how, while on the surface they seem different, they are at their core of the same. Whether I am correct in my assumption, I do want to point out that the costume design in my opinion dropped the ball when it came to carry on this imagery in CQL. After all, while CQL added the explicit white/black imagery to Wangxian’s dynamic to further anchor that question of right and wrong, it fails to carry through this imagery visually even while it is being handed a convenient and easy way to do it by the novel. Shouldn’t the aftermath of the sunshot campaign be the time where LWJ’s white robes should be contrasted to WWX’s black robes to further reinforce the fact that this is the moment in the narrative where they stand the further apart, where they misunderstand each other the most? However, CQL somehow ends up doing the opposite: both at Qiongqi path and at LWJ’s sole visit to Burial Mounds, he wears light blue robes instead of white ones, which he is shown wearing at other points in the narrative. In a failure of visual storytelling, we thus get at Qiongqi path an emotional WWX asking LWJ, while wearing black, ‘what is black or white,’ as they stand opposite and dramatic music swells, and LWJ...... is wearing blue.

Mirror Images: Wangxian and Hualian
One of the things that really struck me after finishing TGCF is the way that the main pairing of Xie Lian and Hua Cheng feels like an inverted version of the Wangxian pairing from MXTX’s previous novel, MDZS. Let’s take a look:
In MDZS, Wei Wuxian is perceived by the world as a villain. He’s the Yiling Laozu, the demonic cultivator who desecrates graves to turn corpses to his will, retreated to the Burial Mounds to build an army, and is in essence the antithesis of respectable cultivation society. By the end of his first life, nearly everyone has turned against him, and he dies either by leaping off a cliff when he sees no other way out (drama) or ripped apart by his own fierce corpses (novel).
But the audiences knows that Wei Wuxian is not a simple villain. Wei Wuxian turned to demonic cultivation in large part because he willingly gave his Golden Core to his martial brother, the Wens he aided were not involved with Wen Ruohan’s atrocities and retreated to the Burial Mounds to simply eke out a living rather than raise an army against the rest of the cultivational world. While Wei Wuxian is not necessarily *innocent*, he is also not the villain everyone else has cast him as.
But not quite everyone, because there’s Lan Wangji. If Wei Wuxian is the cultivational world’s outsider, Lan Wangji is its paragon: Hanguang-Jun, one of the Twin Jades of Gusu Lan, a role model to his sect’s junior disciples, regarded as one of the outstanding cultivators of his generation. And yet he stands alongside someone who the rest of his society regards as unorthodox and dangerous, to the point where he attacks the Elders of his own sect. They make a pair of opposites: orthodox and heterodox, night and day.
If we look at the TGCF cast, it seems like Hua Cheng would correspond to Wei Wuxian, and Xie Lian would correspond to Lan Wangji. Like Wei Wuxian, Hua Cheng is positioned outside of respectable society—he’s a Ghost King, one of the Four Calamities, the kind of entity everyone warns you about getting too close to. They’re both unorthodox characters positioned outside of the societies that are (on the surface, at least) portrayed as “good”—namely, the cultivation clans and the Heavenly Court. And Xie Lian seems like Lan Wangji (at least, Crown Prince and First Ascension Xie Lian does)—he’s a member of the “good” society, virtuous and noble, the day to Hua Cheng’s night.
But if we look a bit deeper, it seems that Wei Wuxian’s counterpart is actually Xie Lian. Like Wei Wuxian, Xie Lian’s attempts to do good resulted in a cascade of disasters that eventually lead to his ostracization by the society he was once part of. When his country of Xianle is struck by drought after his first ascension, he decides to intervene even after he’s told that the country is fated to fall. But his attempts to help always seem to just make things worse—bringing water to the capital region increases burdens on the other areas of the country, in trying to cure the Human Face Disease, he manages to bring more condemnation against himself. Like Wei Wuxian, Xie Lian watches society turn against him for actions that, although rooted in an impulse to do good, often result in harm.
And Hua Cheng’s counterpart is Lan Wangji. Like Lan Wangji, Hua Cheng remains steadfast and devoted to his soulmate for years and years, refusing to give up on them when all seems lost. They are both pillars of devotion, dedicated to their soulmates regardless of what the rest of the world might think.
MXTX seems to be very interested in exploring themes related to perception: how we determine what is right and what is wrong, how we judge others, and how the surface of something can be deceptive. It’s definitely a theme running through the two “big” novels—if we see more from here, it will be interesting to see if this continues.
#mxtx characters#mdzs#tgcf#lan wangji#wei wuxian#hua cheng#xie lian#i know that there are parts that don't match up between these two pairings#wei wuxian has a lot more agency than xie lian#who was being manipulated from behind the scenes#but if we look at the broad strokes i think it works

Well, here it is - a lengthy explanation of each card in my mdzs major arcana deck and what I meant to convey/what i would have changed in retrospect/what alternatives i considered! It’s a bit messy and my typing style is lazy but hopefully it will be an interesting read to some of you :)
And so you don’t say I didn’t warn you - jiang cheng’s section (11 justice) is absurdly long lmao
0 the fool I elaborated on this in the post itself but yeah basically jin ling is kind of representative of all the damage and trauma caused by the past, and there’s a kind of danger there of him falling victim to the same vices as the older characters and repeating the same mistakes and perpetuating the cycle of war and misery (the cycle that we already see with how the jin sect became the new wen sect, and later with how jgy became the new wwx) and he has a lot of room to grow! He grows so much over the course of the novel, comes to realise the complexities of the past and gets a harsh life lesson in how nothing is as black and white as it seems. But ill save talking about his progress for the end, for now whats important is that he has room to grow and also a dog. I don’t really have a justification for the sun, i mostly just thought it looked sick? It made its way to the next card as well, where it makes a bit more sense, but then i realised it was a dumb motif to include 1 the magician I still very much like wwx for the role, and that illustration would have probably had him raising a corpse on his left and pointing threateningly to the sun on his right. I considered including the table as well, with some mdzs relevant items replacing the card suits. Anyway, like i said wwx got a few cards to himself already so i went with the alternative wq design, since i think she fits the card as well. Both she and wwx are highly skilled people, extremely driven once they set their mind to something. The card to me symbolises the creative mind as well as a general drive for action, which fits them both - wwx was famously a prolific inventor, and wq came up with a previously unheard of surgery, after all. This card strays pretty far from the rider-waite deck design, largely because i was still figuring out how i wanted to approach this series, but you can still see the influence. 2 the high priestess I was actually going to skip this card at first because I couldn’t think of a fitting character, but once i considered a qings character post death, it all fit pretty well. She was already a highly intuitive person in life, and in sharing her memories with wwx she is, in a way, relaying a kind of secret knowledge. Anyway she’s one of my fav characters so im glad i got a chance to include her. The coffins could be interpreted to be xxc and sl or xxc and xy 3 the empress Theres other mother figures in mdzs who got to be mothers for a longer time, but jyl definitely embodies the positive aspects of this card the best. She’s nurturing, kind, emotionally supportive, she already mothered wwx and jc quite a bit when she was young. Plus i liked that the rw card had both water and flowers, making an easy lotus connection. In retrospect the stars look kind of out of place and i should have replaced them with something more relevant... Also, i should have had her hold a lotus seed pod instead of a flower, haha 4 the emperor Like i said I considered jc for the role but hoching bullied me into admitting that nmj was better… they’re both more of an inverted emperor than an upright one but then again theres hardly any character in mdzs who would fit upright emperor so. Jgs was also considered but he’s even uglier than nmj so i couldn’t bear to draw him 5 the hierophant It was pointed out to me that lqr would have fit this card better and the truth if that statement haunts me to this day. Unfortunately I have no space in my brain for lqr so lxc got the role instead. My main reason was his role during the wen destruction of gusu lan, when he ran away with the contents of the library - this is why there’s bookshelves behind him. The keys, take, from the rider-waite deck, are meant to represent the gusu pendants that allow you to enter 6 the lovers Im sure many people would have chosen wangxian here but I uhh don’t really care abt wangxian personally? And also their love story is so convoluted that jyl and jzx seem idyllic by comparison lol. Also i didnt really have an idea for who to put in the angel’s place for wangxian… mme jin certainly did not get these two together in the end but undeniably she and mme yu did initially give them a chance to fall for each other so. Thats something i guess. Anyway the trees became their sects’ flowers and the mountain became the burial grounds - an omen of their tragic fate, basically 7 the chariot There might have been other characters who fit this card better but i couldn’t really think of another card for lwj and i thought it would be weird to not include him… anyway i don’t really care for current timeline lwj BUT i do like that he was clearly influenced by wwx to walk his own path in life based on his moral convictions rather than follow his sect’s rules blindly. The chariot is to me a card of self control, self determination and focused action, so it seemed fitting. The composition felt kind of empty without the actual chariot so i padded it out with the guqin, the cloud recess in the bg (it doesn’t look great but i tried to replicate the drama design….) and the bunnies which conveniently fit the colour scheme of the sphinxes in the rider-waite design 8 strength Like i said before, my interpretation of this card is more… morally ambiguous than the quote unquote official meaning, so i thought about manipulative or duplicitous characters more than kind characters whose strength is expressed through gentleness (though i did consider jyl briefly for the latter interpretation). As such, i considered both jgy and nhs, but ended up going with jgy largely because i couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put the nie sect’s beast as the lion. 9 the hermit My thoughts immediately went to bssr lol. It may be an overly literal interpretation but whatever, i like it just fine. And i like that i managed to echo the rider-waite silhouette in the mountain and the tree (and even in bssr herself) 10 wheel of fortune God i love the parallels between these 2… this card to me is about how you cant trust your current situation, good or bad, to last forever, and these 2 embody that perfectly imo. Wwx went from son of a well off servant and a powerful cultivator, to street rat orphan, to adopted son of sect leader jiang, to double orphan, to MIA, to terrifying but admired warrior, to terrifying and despised traitor, to dead, to, at the very end, suddenly respected and trusted again. The dishonesty and cheapness of whatever the public’s current opinion of him is is portrayed beautifully as far as im concerned. And jgy of course claws his way up to power only to instantaneously become public enemy number one, to the point that he’s probably blamed for stuff there’s no reason to believe he had a hand in. Wei wuxian’s silent astonishment at how quickly the cultivation world turns against jgy and towards him again is a delicious moment of thematic resonance. 11 justice I settled on this card for jc after he got booted from the emperor seat but i do think it fits, in a somewhat convoluted way. I turned both the sword and the scales into visual representations of the golden core transfer (can you tell im obsessed with it). According to biddy tarot, the justice card is partly about searching for the truth, and the scene where jc finds out about the transfer is of course a big deal. I was also very influenced by the reversed meaning again - which is about being reluctant or unwilling to face or accept the consequences of your actions. I feel on an intuitive level that this fits jc but I’m not sure how well i can explain it - it’s something about how he’s a little too comfortable scapegoating wwx for things that were also, if much less so, influenced by his actions, and also something about the way he keeps wwx at an arm’s length emotionally but still leans on him and accepts his support when he really needs it, and somewhat hypocritically expects wwx to put the needs of him and the jiang sect before the needs of others. And also something about the core exchange is the consequence and proof of wwx’s deep - terrifyingly deep, even - love and care for him, which is something jc doesn’t seem to let himself acknowledge. Maybe even something about how you could argue that the way all of the jiangs acted around wwx - jfm’s favouritism that left him with the feeling of a debt he needs to repay, mme yus insistence that he be a servant more than a brother to jc, prepared to give his life for jc, and jc’s own unwillingness - or inability, he was a child after all - to clearly acknowledge wwx as an equal to himself, enabling wwx’s self sacrificial and protective tendencies - that all of this was what caused wwx’s complete and unquestioning willingness to do whatever it took to protect jc, and therefore paved the way to the golden core transfer. And i don’t mean this to be scapegoating jc - especially considering how young he was when this all went down, it wouldn’t be fair to expect this level of emotional perceptiveness, awareness and maturity of him - but i think adult jc has to grapple with the fact that the chain of cause and effect was not as simple as wwx fucking everyone’s lives up to be a martyr, and that both jc and his parents had a role in that story as well. I don’t even necessarily think this is something that jc only realised in the current timeline - i think it’s something he felt on some level this whole time, and it probably led to a lot of feelings of guilt - but the suibian reveal definitely puts it in sharp focus, and i think he’s now better equipped to handle this introspection than he was as a recently orphaned, traumatised teenager, lol. ANYWAY the window with the fabric is both a nod to the rider-waite design and a reference to the destruction of lanling - i actually did some basic ass research for this, and it seems that in ancient china fabric would indeed be hanged in a window if the normally used paper was damaged. The design of the window, as well as the very idea to use it to imply the reconstruction of lanling, was taken from this great piece of jc angst by my pal moroll1! Oh yeah also the covered window kind of works as a denial of forgiveness for jc because it’s like a halo but covered up... Also I completely forgot to put a blindfold over his eyes which would be perfectttt because blind justice and the core exchange......... ok moving on 12 the hanged man I always have issues with this card because i cant find a satisfactory summary of what it’s really about. Best i can tell it symbolises a need to hit pause, surrender or let go of something… ive also seen it tied to sacrifice? So mo xuanyu doesn’t fit perfectly, but sacrifice is definitely there in a surface level reading kind of way, and the idea that you have to surrender or let go in order to achieve your goal does fit the whole deal of getting revenge but giving up your life in exchange and not being there to see it 13 death This is probably one of my favourite cards, definitely not because I have huge issues with change or anything…. I see this card as signalling the necessity of change or putting an end to something / leaving something in the past in order to start anew? At first i considered putting past wwx, mxy and current wwx here as a kind of transformation and one cycle flowing into the next... But firstly, I’d already used mxy in the very previous card, so putting him in again would feel like overkill, and secondly, the longer I thought about it the less convinced I was that this would even fit with the card’s meaning? Because coming back from the dead doesn’t like... trigger an internal transformation within wwx or anything? Anyway, fun fact: the design I ended up going with was actually originally intended for judgement! I thought I was being very clever with the whole “figure plays an instrument and the dead rise” parallel, but apparently I’d just completely forgotten that the judgement card had a completely different composition... Truly I was boo boo the fool... But yeah anyway at the end of the day I figured the design would kind of work for death as well, with Wen Ning and the theme of transformation, (since in his case coming back as a fierce corpse does actually mark a certain transformation in behaviour) and Wei Wuxian’s protection of the Wen people essentially signifying an attempt to break the cycle of oppression if that makes any sense? Like, wwx is trying to revolutionise the way the world works a bit, if you catch my drift 14 temperance The centrist card! Again this is probably going off track from the “official” interpretation, but to me this card has a certain “don’t commit fully; do everything in moderation; don’t take either side” flavour to it that i personally find infuriating irl and that i very much assign to lxc. It’s entirely possible that I’m misinterpreting his character because i didn’t really pay him (and the 3zun in general) much mind while reading, but hell, I’m allowed to pick favourites and choose who i want to interpret deeply vs shallowly. Again, i wish id chosen lqr for hierophant because its so annoying for a character i don’t care about to get two cards…. But oh well 15 the devil My alternative idea for this was jgy as the devil and lxc plus nmj as the figures, but since all three had been featured already (multiple times, even!) i figured I’d go with xy instead, especially since he’s among my faves lol. I think the devil signifies something along the lines of unhealthy attachment, obsession or addiction, which isn’t 100% accurate in the case of xxc and a-qing, but if i stretch it a bit to cover toxic relationships in general, and especially manipulation or negative influence, i don’t think it’s half bad. My main struggle here was to choose who amongst the xxc/sl/aq trio to choose for the human figures. 16 the tower Arguably jin zixuans death and the following massacre of nightless city were the final and most direct reason for the siege of burial mounds, and the tiger seal is good shorthand for wwx’s loss of control over his powers, which led to the deaths of jzx and jyl. When reimagining major arcana i like to feature some kind of building in this card (spoilers for a possible future project but in my rose of versailles major arcana set the tower is bastille) and even if it’s not a tower, the image of wwx looming over the gathered crowd from atop a rooftop is so good i couldn’t resist 17 the star Struggled with this one - considered both jin ling and lsz for it, as symbolising a hope for the future, but that was kind of covered by the world so it wouldn’t make sense to include here as well... As usual when I struggle with interpreting a card (as opposed to understanding it but struggling with matching a character to it, like with death or moon) I went to biddy tarot and read all the details about its meaning. What i got was that this card signifies an incoming period of introspection and inner peace following a time of turmoil, as well as a general moving on into a new, better phase of one’s life or finding new meaning and purpose. The figure also suggests someone vulnerable, but possessing a keen sense of intuition as well as a good degree of practicality and common sense. Given all those, I settled for mianmian because IM LOVE HER..... I also kind of see her as a prelude to the “just one person is enough” theme present in tgcf!! And i think her decision to abandon her sect because she saw the toxicity and corruption in it is a very inspiring action - even if it didn’t make a large visible impact, i think the appearance of her and her idyllic family at the very end of the novel - paralleling and mirroring wangxian - implies that at the end of the day, it was a meaningful one 18 the moon Another card i ALWAYS fuxking struggle with - this time less because i can’t grasp its meaning and more because I can never find a character that fits it well. I usually get fixated on the “dreams and subconscious” part, but if i lean more on the “disguise, deceit, anxiety and fear” part, i eventually figured the whole yi city arc wouldn’t be a bad fit. I say the entire arc because it really does encompass all those themes if you include both the past and the present - xue yang’s disguise, his tricks with the villagers, a-qing’s lies and even xxc’s reluctance to talk about his past as well as xue yang pretending to be xxc all fit the disguise and deceit angle, and the general mystery and creepiness of the current timeline yi city work well with the anxiety and fear - the mist, the slow uncovering of the past, even a-qing being revealed to be an ally after scaring the shit out of the protags. I definitely struggled with including all the elements and characters, and even moreso with making them vaguely fit the rider-waite composition, but i think it ended up okay ish. OH and i completely forgot to draw mist swirling around them :( 19 the sun I was considering mianmian’s family for this one, but since I used her for star, I ended up with wwx and his parents instead. Once again I’m reinterpreting the card a bit - normally I think it symbolises incoming times of pure happiness and abundance, as well as a connection with the inner child, but I gave it more of a nostalgic or sentimental twist - wwx looking back at the brief glimpse of his happy childhood. 20 judgement another card that i struggle to interpret a bit... Here i actually used the tgcf tarot zine as a reference! In it judgement is summarised as “rebirth, following duty, absolution” SO i figured that nhs, mxy and wwx all together would fit pretty neatly... wwx achieving (public) absolution through clearing his own name after being reborn, and nhs sort of calling on wwx to expose jgy’s crimes... It’s a bit messy but not bad I think! 21 the world This ties very closely to my read on mdzs as a story - which is that it’s, at the end of the day, largely about cycles, and about how hard it is to break them, but how we gotta keep trying and have hope anyway. Or maybe more precisely, that the people directly involved with and influenced by the trauma of the past might not be able to get over said trauma and that the hope for healing from it will be shouldered by the new generation. Or something like that… Basically what i mean is that jc and wwx and lwj and lxc and nhs and jgy and all these people who were in the thick of the sunshot campaign and the siege are so profoundly affected by it that it genuinely feels by the end of the story like there is little hope for them to ever truly overcome that trauma and build a better future without repeating the same old mistakes - but there is a glimmer of hope in the new generation, specifically in jl and lsz. And it’s a bit paradoxical, because they have also been directly impacted by the past tragedies - lsz having his entire clan wiped out after wwx failed to protect them, jl losing both his parents to wwx’s mistakes - but despite that loss, and despite coming from arguably the two opposing sides of the past conflicts, they are both, in the end, capable of moving past that tragedy, of recognising the complicated nature of those conflicts (jl’s moment of clarity at the end is both heartbreaking and hopeful) and forging friendships between clans in the process. I honestly think that the extra where jl is struggling to assert his authority as sect leader, to treat his subjects well and to cooperate with other sects in a truly amicable way is the single hopeful ending note for the larger themes of the novel - it allows us to imagine that maybe these kids can learn from the mistakes of their elders rather than getting sucked in by resentment at those mistakes, and actually build a brighter future for the cultivation world. And sidenote, this is also why i have a soft spot for jin ling and lan sizhui as a ship... speaking of which their poses were directly referenced from the lovers card ehehe
Looking back, I’d like to add some symbol of jin ling’s trauma so that it mirrors baby wen yuan in the tree stump... maybe his father’s sword?

WEN 56200i 2000-Watt Gas Powered Portable Inverter Generator
Analysis WEN 56200i:
I currently have a Yamaha EF2000is. Saw the WEN 56200i on specials recently and couldn't pass it up for the price. I could have bought two and changed what I paid for the Yamaha.
The reason I bought the WEN 56200i is that the motor is a Yamaha clone, it's very similar inside and the wiring diagrams are pretty much the same, so I think I can connect the two generators in parallel.
It is made in China, but the Yamaha has a label on the inside indicating that it is also made in China. The smartest tools also have the Yamaha engine, but they are all "Powered By Yamaha".
I don't know if WEN 56200i has a license for this engine or if it is a counterfeit. I bet both units can be made side by side in the same Chinese factory.
Review WEN 56200i:
I received it and let it run for a few days and I really liked it. First, it is very attractive. Inside, it almost seems to have the quality level of the Yamaha, although there are differences.
The engine has the same design but has a dipstick, while the Yamaha only has a plug. Spark plugs use different sized wrenches. The Yamaha inverter has a shell, but the components on the circuit board are open on the WEN 56200i .
One thing I like about the Yamaha that is missing from the WEN 56200i is the small door that allows you to access the oil fill hole without removing the entire side cover.
I greased it, gassed it, and then slowly pulled the starter rope a few times. Then I shot twice and it started. I ran it through several short cycles with alternating loads and then refrigerated it to break it down.
Then I got it to work next to the Yamaha testing it with the same loads. I think the Yamaha is a little quieter, but not by much. When the automatic throttle is engaged, Yamaha responds more quickly to charging, while the WEN 56200i flashes its overload light for a few seconds as it reaches a 1500 watt charge from idle mode. But there really seems to be very little difference in the performance or noise level of the two units. The WEN also weighs a few kilos more.
Update 01/04/2017 - A few years ago I gave away my Onan generator in my Class C motorhome and replaced it with more batteries, an inverter/charger, and solar panels. I always get lost and never get addicted.
I don't want to turn on a generator every time I want to microwave or make a cup of coffee. I carry the WEN56200 on the bus for when the solar energy isn't enough and I don't drive enough to charge the vehicle's generator battery bank. I turn on the WEN and let it run for a few hours at 90% load (with a tachometer included).
I never carry extra gas with me because I have never returned from a camping trip where he used half of his tank. After a year, the WEN 56200i still works very well and starts up all the time. My Yamaha EF2000is is collecting dust in my workshop.
I ran it for several hours yesterday with a 40 amp battery charger that charged both 12-volt batteries in my big truck. It spun at 1/4 throttle and was barely audible from 15 yards away.
I just received the WEN Parallel Kit and yesterday tested the WEN56200i in parallel with my Yamaha EF2000is. Both generator sets ran in parallel without any problems. They split the load well with nearly identical RPMs.
Both gensets independently or coupled maintained a good constant speed of 60 cps. The maximum the gensets could charge in parallel was 3,000 watts before the overload light on the WEN 56200i came on.
The Yamaha is a bit stronger. See attached image. I've used them with two 1,500 watt heaters in different settings, as well as my air compressor. The little-known secret is that any brand name inverter generator capable of parallel operation can be paralleled with any other brand. Honda, Yamaha, WEN 56200i , smarter tools, etc.

Index Post (updated 11.12.20)
So, I feel like some housekeeping is in order. Hence: an Index Post!
I have this organized into three main categories: Tolkien, The Untamed, and Other (film, art, books, games, life, etc.). Items are ordered from oldest to newest. The number of asterisks indicates length. “[reblog+]” indicates that the original post is not my own, but I added thoughts with a reblog (because I’m bad with Tumblr etiquette). Ultra short pieces are grouped near the bottom of each section.
Post links below the cut.
Additionally! I also have almost 100 in-progress posts in my drafts. I need to finish some, but I think at this point I need some guidance on where to go next, once I finish project 1 and write 3 more prompt ficlets. This is where you come in! I’d like to open my ask box up to reader suggestions on what to work on next. Go to THIS POST for a list of upcoming posts to choose from.
