The mummy of Herakliedes at the Getty Villa. Romano-Egyptian AD 120-140. The mummy of a young man named Herakliedes combined Greco-Roman portraiture with Egyptian symbolism. The deceased is identified by his name inscribed above his gilded toes. He also wears a gold funerary wreath. The Egyptian sky goddess Nut and the underworld god Osiris ornament the cartonnage, or linen wrappings. This is a rare, well preserved example of a red-shroud mummy so called because of the red dye used to tint the wrappings. The process of embalming: After the body was cleansed & the organs removed (they were not in placed in canopic jars), the body was placed in & packed with salt until it was dry. The body was the rubbed with oils & herbs were placed in the body. The unusual thing about this mummy was that an embalmed bird, & for the life of me, I can’t think of what kind of bird it was but it was a big one, was place on the abdomen of the body before the wrapping started & then the process of wrapping began. The body was wrapped & rewrapped each layer of wrappings were sealed before the process of wrapping began again. sealing for a total of three wrappings. Then the cartonnage (linens wrappings) were painted with the red dye. Apparently no one knows the reason for this. When everything was dry, the of ornamentation began. The last thing placed on the mummy was the painted wooden face of Herakliedes. You can see that the face was painted with great care. Nowadays Björk doesn't consider this part of her official discography. It mostly consists of #covers and songs sung in her native language.
