Jared Gooden submits Wellington Turman in the 2nd!
Turman was having a lot of success with the hands too. Was connecting on the inside of Gooden's punches. Had just caught Gooden with a nice short left hook. But he leapt into a 1-2, took away his own base, and tried to throw a hook without his feet planted. Gooden was still facing the center line and landed a MEAN left of his own and it was the beginning of the end for Turman. Tries to grab a hold and get Gooden down again but Gooden floats to the top and pounds on Turman til he gives up the back for the RNC. Props to Gooden. Long time vet but dude finally got his 2nd win in the UFC.

UFC - Fight Night, Dariush vs Tsarukyan
December 2nd's edition of UFC Fight Night took place in the Moody Center at Austin, Texas and proved to me that if you miss the prelims, you may end up missing out on some good moments. In this post, I will be reviewing the main card, but I will gloss over some of the prelim fights.
Tumblr media
Prelims
Veronica Hardy def. Jamey-Lyn Horth
The card was kicked off by a Women's 125 matchup that resulted in a split decision victory for Veronica Hardy. I missed this fight.
Jared Gooden def. Wellington Turman
Jared Gooden ended up scoring a 2nd round submission. Amazing comeback. I missed this fight as well.
Rodolfo Bellato def. Ihor Potieria
Ihor Potieria was dangerously close to finishing before he gassed out and was finished by Rodolfo Bellato in the 2nd round. I once again missed this fight.
Drakkar Klose def. Joe Solecki
This is when I began to regret tuning out, because this ended in a slam knockout by Drakkar Klose. Fight ended 1 minute and 41 seconds in to the first round.
Cody Brundage def. Zachary Reese
I tuned in when this fight began, and I was a little disappointed I didn't get to see the slam knockout in the last fight, but I was quickly elated when this became the first UFC event to have two slam knockouts. Cody Brundage won the fight by slamming Zachary Reese on the side of his head as he held on to an arm-bar.
Nobody learned from Rose Namajunas that there is risk in holding on to an arm bar while your opponent is standing. It's also odd how both slam knockouts were within 8 seconds of each other, because this fight ended 1 minute and 49 seconds in to the first round.
Miesha Tate def. Julia Avila
Miesha Tate proved once again that she is still a good fight for anyone in the Women's Bantamweight division by achieving a submission victory in the third round.
Main Card
Dustin Stoltzfus def. Punahele Soriano
Dustin Stoltzfus is the weirdest fighter in my eyes, because I was almost certain that he retired after getting knocked out by Abus Magomedov, but he came from out of nowhere and submitted his opponent in the 2nd round.
I'm hoping for a good career resurgence from Stoltzfus, but I am not 100% certain he'll make it far in Middleweight.
Joaquim Silva def. Clay Guida
This was a back and forth fight, with Joaquim Silva edging out a unanimous decision in an action packed 3 round affair.
Clay Guida has cemented his legacy in my eyes, and while he can still keep fighting I think retirement will be weighing in on him soon enough.
Sean Brady def. Kelvin Gasteleum
Honestly, I think 170 is good for Kelvin Gasteleum. Sean Brady beat him by submission in the 3rd round, but I still think that Kelvin can have much better success at 170 than 185.
Deiveson Figureido def. Rob Font
This fight showcased Deiveson's amazing power and how he has only strengthened after he moved up in weight from 125.
Deiveson will soon be entering the Bantamweight rankings, as Rob Font was ranked #8.
Jalin Turner def. Bobby Green
This fight proved that even though I feel like the UFC has the best referees, there is still a lot of work to be done to make the sport safer. Jalin Turner knocked out Bobby Green 2 minutes and 37 seconds in to the first round, but the referee forced Jalin Turner to continue to ground and pound Bobby Green, and had finally stopped the fight at 2 minutes and 49 seconds.
Kerry Hatley should not be allowed to referee any more fights. This is extremely dangerous officiating that should be dealt with accordingly.
Arman Tsarukyan def. Beneil Dariush
I had high hopes from Beneil going in to this fight, and pre-fight shenanigans made me despise Arman on a massive level. The hotel altercation with Bobby Green was extremely disappointing to me when I looked at what Arman was doing during fight week.
Unfortunately for me, Arman ended up knocking out Beneil in the 1st round with a knee and punches. The fight just barely surpassed 1 minute.
Overall, the main event did not disappoint and Arman has proved that he should be one of the next people in line to fight Islam Makhachev for the Lightweight championship.
Overall Rating
8.5/10
I really enjoyed this week's UFC event. Some serious stakes in the main event for a potential title opportunity, the two men in the co-main are always down to fight. The undercard was super entertaining.
UFC fans always eat good.

Wellington Turman submits Misha Cirkunov
Wellington Turman submits Misha Cirkunov
Wellington Turman secured the most notable victory of his career thus far Saturday when he tapped Misha Cirkunov at the UFC Fight Night 202 co-main event. Turman (18-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) kept Cirkunov (15-8 MMA, 6-6 UFC) out of the wins column in the middleweight division when he scored a submission victory in their bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas . The Brazilian overcame some rough moments but…

“Jacare, Shogun and maybe not much fun” UFC Fight Night: Brazil Preview
Joey
November 10th, 2019
WHEW! So this is a real card, eh? Honestly it's far from the worst show of the year but it's also far from a good show either. This feels slightly below average even if you grade it on a Brazilian Fight Night curve. You have an appealing main event, a few interesting prelim fights and some solid action fights that might create for some unique finishes. I'd say it's skippable but you can legit just watch it whenever with the benefit of ESPN+. Remember that it's the last card we're getting until December 7th so perhaps that'll keep ya watching. We only have so many bites at the apple here before 2019 is done and dusted, dudes.

Weight Class Jumpers (Fighters competing outside of the weight class of their last fight even if they’re returning BACK to their “normal weight class”) (32-25)- Jacare Souza, Ricardo Ramos
Twelve Precious Ponderings
1- So let's create an imaginary pecking order for the 205 lb division underneath Jon Jones:
You have to begin with Dominick Reyes. Undefeated, young for 205 lbs, finishes in all but one of his UFC bouts (and he pretty much finished OSP too). He KO'd Chris Weidman on ESPN 2. After that you assume there's Corey Anderson since he just KO'd Johnny Walker and has wins over Ilir Latifi and Glover Teix in the past two years. Also given that the general rule of thumb is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, the more he talks the more the UFC is likely to eventually acquiesce.  Where does the winner of this fight slide in behind that? It's worth remembering that Jan Blachowicz was in talk to fight Jon Jones at one point before Jon either turned him down or the UFC decided to go all in on Jorge Masvidal vs Nate Diaz. At the same time, he's one fight removed from getting his metaphorical shit pushed in vs Thiago Santos. You'd assume Blachowicz would slot in RIGHT ahead of Glover Teix but would they have Jan ahead of Anthony Smith? Conversely where does Jacare fit in? Could Jacare, if he finishes Jan, become the third straight 185 lber who challenges Jon Jones for the title or does he need a streak of wins? Remember the UFC promised Jacare that IF he won vs Jack Hermansson, he'd get a title shot. It didn't work out. Do they bring back that promise as a make good? It'd be nice of them to especially as Jones continues to chase an opponent worthwhile in his mind.
2- One of the things sort of lost to time is that Blachowicz pre-winning streak had a serious cardio deficiency. He's found a good way to balance those problems with more range fighting, less clinch work and fighting at a comfortable enough pace to where if he gets tired, his opponent is equally as tired. Will his cardio hold up if he has to do a lot of clinch fighting with Jacare?
3- Is this the last time we'll see Jacare if he loses?
4- Paul Craig submitting Shogun would be pretty sad but I can't imagine that coming to pass. Craig is a big LHW but he's awfully slow, a total nonstarter on the feet and shaky if a fight doesn't wind up on the mat. All Shogun has to do is avoid that third round slump.
5- Charles Oliveira is 5-1 in his last six fights and has been all action since going up to 155 lbs. At this point I have to assume the UFC simply sees him as a fun action fighter and have given up on the idea of him being anything resembling a contender. Jared Gordon is pretty much yet another slow blood and guts guy in Oliveira's long run of fighting those kinds of guys in a row. Should be a tremendous fight while it lasts.
6- So if Shogun does lose to Paul Craig, where would that rank among the sadder losses of legendary fighters? Gotta be up there, right?
7- James Krause is finally beginning to figure things out at 170 lbs so I'm a little confused why instead of getting a respectable step up (maybe into the bottom half of the top 15 perhaps?), he's getting a guy coming off two losses who has been thoroughly outboxed/outstruck by guys just like Krause recently? I could be missing something I guess but it feels like they need to do more with Krause while he's kind of sort of hot.
8- Curious to see what Ricardo Ramos looks like up 10 lbs. It feels like a pretty weird step up in weight class but maybe Ramos' body was telling him something we can't hear. His opponent is Uruguay's Eduardo Garagorri who looked good enough in his debut but seems a level below Ramos and Ramos' usually competition.
9- I personally thought Wellington Turman beat Karl Roberson so I'm curious to see how he looks in his second fight, even if it's yet another short notice call in Markus Perez. Would not be surprised if this fight was a sleeper hit.
10- The Renan Barao situation is just sad.
11- Veronica Macedo has had it tough in the UFC so I was happy to see her pull off the upset and score a win in her last fight. Similarly speaking Ariane Lipski has had a rough go of it as well despite her evident upside and promise. This is one of those well put together fights that you kinda don't like for either fighter even if it's compelling.
12- BOBBY GREEN IS BACK!

Wellington Turman armbars Misha Cirkunov in the 2nd!
Turman gets taken down but catches an armbar as Cirkunov throws GnP from his knees. Got to see those up.
God, that’s going to be crushing for Cirkunov. Like you could see his confidence issues at 205. He cut to 185 and has found his strongest weapon isn’t enough to win fights with the cut.

Wellington Turman decisions Markus Perez
This felt like such a middleweight fight from te not so golden era of middleweight fighting. Wellington Turman and Markus Perez clashed stylstically as Turman fought and moves like a a truck with no driver to steal a line from JDS while Perez had all flair but no sizzle to string it all together. When they weren;'t trying to do their own respective shit, they were bonking heads against the fence. Turman is strong as hell and so he just bullied Perez around, dirty boxing him up and landing knees whenever he could. Not a GOOD fight but a very middleweight fight if that makes any sense.

Andrew Sanchez knocks out Wellington Turman in the 1st!
That’s easily the most comfortable that Sanchez has looked on the feet. Power of the mullet I suppose. Sanchez and Turman were cracking from mid range but Turman was definitely getting the worst of it. Tried to press Sanchez back and Sanchez stepped in with a left hook right hand that rocked Turman. Then he followed it up with a pair of 1-2s and the fight was called off.
