Concert Hopper Richard's Top 10 Metal Albums of 2020!
1) Lamb of God – Lamb of God
Lamb of God, after the departure of drummer of Chris Adler, have begun to expand their horizons as evidenced on their self-titled album with Randy Blythe (vocals) continuing to expand his range by adding clean vocals to his repertoire. Couple this with a pulsing, blasting musical backdrop and you are on a wild ride that winds its way through topical journeys that touch on modern topics and of course, the state of the world in all its depressing glory. Perhaps the highlight of the album is Memento Mori which is Randy’s reminder to himself to not let the state of the world drag him into the depths of darkness within his mind. ConcertHopper covered this album entirely back in June and this article can be found at the following link: Lamb of God returns to their roots with new, self-titled LP! — Concert Hopper
2) The Acacia Strain – Slow Decay
Like Lamb of God, The Acacia Strain have been on a journey of musical exploration, starting with 2019’s It Comes in Waves album which harkens much more to black metal than the standard Acacia Strain fare. With Slow Decay the band takes a few surprising paths, including many guest slots in various songs on the album. On the whole, the album the band takes on many current topics like the wildfires in Washington in 2018 as well as the anti-vaccination movement that has become so prevalent in society and which, in the modern era of COVID is poised to rear its head again.
3) Zeal & Ardor – Wake of a Nation
Zeal & Ardor were one of the surprises of 2019 for us at ConcertHopper after seeing them at Welcome to Rockville. The Swedish gargantuans who found their footing by merging slavery-era chants and songs to black metal music. With the release of Wake of a Nation the band departs from this merging of genres and takes on the difficult subject of race relations in the world. With songs like “I Can’t Breathe” which was written in the wake of the George Floyd killing and features samples from Black Lives Matter protests across America. They take on the broad history of racism in America, even going back in the song “Tuskegee” which tackles the little-known Tuskegee Syphilis study which, for over 40 years allowed syphilis to spread while given placebo for 40 years.
4) August Burns Red – Guardians
August Burns Red is never a band to disappoint and this holds true with their album, Guardians. Fresh off their tour (which ConcertHopper was there to cover) where they played their Constellations album in its entirety, the band launched into this album. As seems to be trend with most of the albums on this list, the band takes on several modern topics including how the mainstream media no longer has the best interest of the public at heart. Perhaps the highlight of the album though is what is possibly the most brutal track on the album, “Bloodletter” which, along with crushing instrumentals provides lyrics that speak to the evils of the music industry and those that try to take advantage of artists for their own gain.
5) Code Orange – Underneath
Prior to the onset of COVID, Code Orange was set to embark on what was going to be an incredible tour with Slipknot, Underoath, and A Day to Remember. Listed by Corey Taylor himself as one of the bands that was set to push heavy music forward (along with Knocked Loose and Ho99o9,) they truly are a force to be reckoned with. This comes to fruition on Underneath where the band continues to spread their wings and push the genre forward. “Swallowing the Rabbit Whole” is one of the song’s most interesting and complex songs, both lyrically and musically and is perhaps a hint at where the band wants to go musically in the future. The lyrics explore the subject of self-discovery and how the journey has the potential to be so rewarding but warns of the difficulties that could occur as a result. The band also performed a live stream on the streaming service, Twitch with full stage production in the gap caused by COVID.
6) The Ghost Inside – The Ghost Inside
Four years after the horrendous bus accident that saw the death of their driver as well as multiple injuries to band members, including Andrew Tkaczyk who lost his leg, the band triumphantly returned with a live concert in Los Angeles. After this renewed energy applied to performing and recording, the band launched into this self-title album. Not surprisingly, a large portion of the album is devoted to the accident five years prior and the growth of everyone in the band since then. This is obvious right at the intro song, “1333” which was the exact number of days between the accident and the day the band played their comeback show. From there, the album continues to be a testament to perseverance, with tracks like “Phoenix Rise” and “Begin Again”.
7) Alpha Wolf – A Quiet Place to Die
Alpha Wolf recalibrated as a band after allegations of sexual assault led to the dismissal of vocalist Aidan Ellaz. After a hiatus, the Australian powerhouses introduced Lochie Keogh as the new vocalist and Mitchell Fogarty as their new drummer and they promptly set to kicking ass with songs like “Black Mamba”. After several incredible singles, the band released their first full-length album since the introduction of Keogh and Fogarty. Not ones to shy away from the topic that led to the bands struggles, the song “Restricted (R18+)” tackled the subject of sexual and physical abuses from the eyes of the victim. From there they continued to release a sonic barrage, culminating in perhaps the most sonically brutal track of the album (perhaps even of the bands’ entire catalog) “Akudama”.
8) Trivium – What the Dead Men Say
Trivium as a band have seen massive and impressive growth over the course of the past year or two. Nominated for a Grammy, the band propelled themselves forward into What the Dead Men Say, an album that was written amidst a global pandemic and, in between all of the bands’ members livestreaming on Amazon’s Twitch platform where lead vocalist and guitarist Matt Heafy is a pioneer for artists looking to expand their reach (and where he has stated he earns more income than touring with his band). The band combined elements of their progression across the entire arc of their careers, from the beginning to the power that turned them into a Grammy contender and into the future. The band, as they have become so keen to do, utilized a mixture of clean vocals with Keafy’s refined screaming vocals alongside bassist Paolo Gregoletto’s own screaming vocals. The band pushed their own boundaries by including a couple of acoustic songs. All of this is neatly summed up with a masterful performance of the album’s highlight, “Catastrophist”, which has seen heavy play time on Sirius XM’s stations.
9) Mark Morton – Ether
Like many other acts on this list, Mark Morton has been on a journey of musical discovery since releasing his first solo album, Anesthetic last year. Like the first album, Ether features appearances by much of heavy music royalty including Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, John Carbone of heavy pioneers Moontooth and Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage, Light the Torch, and Blood Has Been Shed. The pinnacle of the album may very well be Morton and Hale’s incredible cover of the Black Crowes classic, “She Talks to Angels”.
10) The Black Dahlia Murder – Verminous
Purveyors of brutality, The Black Dahlia Murder have always been responsible for full-on sonic assaults, pulled no punches with their album Verminous. Often focusing on the very death metal/black metal subjects of sorcery and general dubious acts, the song weaves a serpentine path among an assortment of topics like necromancy, the hopelessness of humanity and of course death. Perhaps the culmination of the album is “Dawn of Rats” which is a song about a subject most bands would shy away from, the abuses of the Catholic church on children.
As honorable mentions who would have been included in this album had they produced full-length albums this year, I would also like to add how impressed I was with newcomers Spiritbox who have been crushing the metal scene during the period that COVID has taken over. They have appeared on Sirius XM live concerts and their vocalist Courtney LaPlante appeared in the One Thousand Painful Stings music video with The Acacia Strain. I look for them to be a force in metal as we move forward.

The Bands of Monster Energy Welcome to Rockville 2018: Thrice
Monster Energy Welcome to Rockville is shaking things up for its eighth year, all for the better. Event producers Danny Wimmer Presents have added a whole extra day to the event allowing for a host of other amazing bands – both established and up-and comers – to rock festival goers. April 27th, 28th, and 29th of 2018 will see what has long been billed as “Florida's biggest rock experience” return to its home at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, FL. With that extra day and the dozen plus additional bands that have been added to the lineup, Welcome to Rockville now seems poised to become one of the most elite festivals around. Not just in the realm of hard rock and metal, but all music festivals in general. 2017 was an exceptional year for Welcome to Rockville, the event drawing a record crowd of 75,000 over its two-day run. The talent was superb that year, and that will carry on into its 8th installment, because the amount of talent that has been assembled is mind-blowing. Next spring, Rockville will almost certainly attract 100,000 or so music fans and it WILL sell out. That said, let’s look at one of the bands that will be performing there in late April… Thrice is back with a vengeance. At least, that’s sure how it seems. After a three-year long hiatus and four years away from any major touring, the quartet made their return in 2016 with a new record. And while it made sense that they would do some touring to support it, fans no doubt presumed they’d be taking more time off after that year. But no.
Headline tours, co-headline runs, and supporting acts such as Rise Against, Thrice has done it all within the last couple of years, and 2018 is shaping up to be another fairly busy year, thanks to a few festival appearances like this one at Rockville. Best of all, Thrice will be making Welcome to Rockville just a little more special, since it is the first of only two festivals they’ll be playing in the U.S. this spring. Upon making their return, the released one of the strongest records of their career, 2016’s To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere touching on some all too relevant social and political issues, raising thought-provoking questions for listeners to ponder, while backing the messages with some robust, in-your-face music beds. With that era behind them, expect a more all-encompassing set from Thrice at Monster Energy Welcome to Rockville. A set that will surely draw from several entries in their catalog, and one that is certain to be teeming with that immense energy they’re known for as the look to leave a lasting impression on everyone at Rockville. Event Info: Friday, April 27th – Sunday, April 29th at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, FL. All ages. $85 for 1-day GA | $200 for GA Weekend | VIP packages are available.

While the term “genre-defining” gets tossed around quite frequently these days in the music industry, and most especially the heavy metal industry, it is truly the only proper term to align with the head expanding sounds created by MESHUGGAH. The band began its formation in Umeå, Sweden in 1987. With over 25 years and 8 full length albums as masters in this realm, the band have been on an endless journey to outwardly reveal their uncommon sonic stamp. This greatly pertains to the musical precision required in order to create songs with such unique time signatures.
In 1989 the band‘s vestal voyage began with their self titled release that was limited to only 1,000 copies and completely sold out. In 1991 with the release of their first full length album "Contradictions Collapse" the band welcomed their new drummer, and the man that would eventually be dubbed “the best drummer alive;” the incredible Tomas Haake. Their 1995 album "Destroy, Erase, Improve", and the release of "Chaosphere" in 1998 gained massive attention and really pushed the band into the popular heavy metal touring circuit. Things progressed more and more until the release of their 2002 album which would go on to sell over 110,000 copies in the United States. As the years and albums progressed a term describing the band‘s progressive music style; “djent” emerged to solidify their genre defining nature. In 2005 they released "Catch Thirtythree" which perplexed and delighted many fans and critics as a 47 minute-long “uni-song” that genuinely required patience and attention to detail. A few years later in 2008, "obZen" made it‘s way into the world alongside a stunning music video for the single 'Bleed'. "obZen" sold over 82,000 copies in the US, alone. In 2012 the 10-track record "Koloss" was reveled and made its way to the top 20 of the Billboard top 200, re-demonstrating once again, the exclusive talents held only by MESHUGGAH.
In the time between "KOLOSS" and the release of their 8th full length studio album "The Violent Sleep of Reason", to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band's debut studio album, the idea was born to let creative genius Keerych Luminokaya redesign each album cover with a new sense of style (Luminokaya began creating artwork for the band with their 2012 release of "KOLOSS", and has continued working closely with them by providing artwork for albums and tour/stage design). This project stretched over 6 months, and resulted in the release of the “25 Years of Musical Deviance” box set. Only 1000 copies were produced, and they sold out immediately. Inspired by the high demand from fans who couldn't get their hands on a copy of the box set the first time around, Nuclear Blast will now offer the albums individually on a variety of colored vinyl, in a one-time only limited pressing. Starting with the first 5 albums: "MESHUGGAH", "Contradictions Collapse", "None", "Destroy", Erase, Improve", and "Chaosphere", and set to be released on Nov 30th, 2018. All albums are now remastered especially for vinyl by Thomas Eberger of Stockholm Mastering.
In the wake of the massive 25 year milestone, there truly is no better way to complete the collections of fans worldwide than with the installation of these beautifully remastered albums. It‘s also a rarely seen opportunity for newer, younger fans who have yet to discover MESHUGGAH to introduce their ears and their minds to this stand-alone collection of timeless, mathematical auditory brilliance.

I was just sitting and thinking about what all I'd done this year and realized... I saw Quite A Lot of bands this year. More than I realized. So I made a list:
AWOLNATION, Nothing But Theives, and Iron Tom (not something I would have went to alone, but my best friend asked me to go with her)
Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Don Felder
Foreigner, Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, and Whitesnake
Went to Welcome To Rockville, a rock festival where I saw Ozzy Osbourne, the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Greta Van Fleet, Clutch, The Sword, Red Fang, Baroness, and a ton of other bands
Steven Wilson
And I still feel like I'm forgetting some. But. Needless to say 2018 was a good ass year concert wise. Hopefully 2019 is just as good 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

The oldest has wanted to see this band for years. I bought us tickets in 2018 for a show in KC with Ozzie, it was cancelled. Tickets in 2019 in TN at Exit 111, they pulled out cause Dave had throat cancer. Last night, I purchased him a spur of the moment ticket for Welcome to Rockville, so he could catch them tonight. He just texted to say they are under a code red for weather and it's the Megadeth curse. This was part of his graduation present. He said he is all good and will roll with the punches and not be pissed about it. I hope the weather passes and he gets to see the band he has idolized since a young teen and what got him into playing guitar and bass.

The album’s eleven tracks were coproduced by Dead Sara’s drummer/programmer Sean Friday along with Noah Shain, who previously produced, mixed, and engineered the band’s previous two albums, Dead Sara (2012) and Pleasure To Meet You (2015). THEM EVILS Declare War on 2020 Carnage with Explosive Single & Live Video for "Pour Out Another One"!
Huntington Beach, CA based Heavy Rock band THEM EVILS is tearing into 2021 with their newest, party anthem single “Pour out Another One”! Produced by Jim Kaufman, the live video for “Pour Out Another One” was directed and edited by the band’s own David Delaney.
youtube
“Pour Out Another One” is best described as an anthemic middle finger to what COVID-19 has done to the music industry over the course of the past year. After linking up with Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft (Escape The Fate) and Aaron Edwards, we wanted to write a song that embodied the attitude of just saying ‘f*ck it, let’s throw a few back’ and party our way through this.” – Jake Massanari
Click HERE to Purchase / Stream “Pour Out Another One” Online!
Them Evils are kicking down the doors with their new party anthem “Pour out Another One”. A song that evokes a message that people can relate to now more than ever. As COVID-19 continues to keep the world from enjoying day-to-day pleasures in life, the band knew this was the time to show that it doesn’t stop them from keeping the good times rollin’. Whether it’s the struggle to survive or just celebrating the time we have.. ‘Pour Out Another One’ is proof that the life of the party never dies.
In 2020 Them Evils managed to put out 2 singles during the national lockdown, “Where Ya Gonna Crash Tonight?” and “Coattails”. Each song shows off the band’s diversity in songwriting and achieving individual success through online streaming platforms.
Their previous EP Rollin’ Stoned and Livin’ Free was enthusiastically received with placements on Key Rock playlists at all major streaming services, and the band supported that release with more than 100 live dates in 2018 that included a national headlining club tour with stops at Shiprocked, Welcome To Rockville, Carolina Rebellion, and main stage @ Rock On The Range. 2019 saw the band supporting Pop Evil, Of Mice and Men, The Black Moods, and He Is Legend, as well as festival appearances at Exit 111 and Rock USA. Positive Press looks were posted at Kerrang, Loudwire, AXS, Rock Revolt, Alternative Addiction and others that added to the band’s critical acclaim.
The band plans to continue touring as they soon as they can safely do so, with tours and festival dates currently being explored for 2021!

Chronicling the year of decadence and depravity that almost cost Sixx his life during the recording and tour for Mötley Crüe’s seminal 1987 album GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS, the book not only became a worldwide bestseller but also spawned the band SIXX:A.M., and Sixx’s nationally syndicated daily iHeart Media rock radio show “Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx.” Says Sixx: “Over the last ten years I’ve met so many people who have thanked me for The Heroin Diaries and say that it saved their lives,” explains Nikki. “But the truth is, writing The Heroin Diaries saved my life too.” Journey back again into this mega–New York Times bestselling survivor’s story in one of the most “harrowing” (Rolling Stone) and “heartbreaking” (The New York Times) memoirs of addiction ever published and the soundtrack it inspired. The Bands of Monster Energy Welcome to Rockville 2018: Stone Temple Pilots
That said, let’s look at one of the bands that will be performing there in late April… It has been quite some time since Stone Temple Pilots did any substantial touring, or even any performances in general, the amicable departure of Chester Bennington back in 2015 forcing the iconic group to plot their next move, fans wondering who would be tapped to front the group next.
It took a few years, but as was recently announced, Jeff Gutt has been chosen by Dean and Robert DeLeo as well as Eric Kretz as STP’s lead singer moving on; and this upcoming era sounds like it will be quite something. At least, that’s what “Meadow” sure suggests. The first single from this latest version of Stone Temple Pilots comes across as being classic STP. At the very least it provides some nice nods to their roots while looking at their future; while Gutt’s voice at times sounds eerily similar to that of the late Scott Weiland. He possesses that classic rock star voice, which bodes well for the band moving forward, and should be quite nice when it comes to performing the classic cuts fans know and love, ensuring they’ll be as close to the originals as possible. What Stone Temple Pilots will have in store for everyone at Monster Energy Welcome to Rockville is anyone’s guess, but expect at least a couple of new offerings mixed in with the hits. They’ll be using the spring festival circuit to really push this new lineup, though they have several shows lined up in the month of March. So, when STP arrives in Jacksonville, they will be in prime touring and performing shape. Event Info: Friday, April 27th – Sunday, April 29th at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, FL. All ages. $85 for 1-day GA | $200 for GA Weekend | VIP packages are available.

After the torrential downpour and lightning we dealt with on Day 1 of Welcome To Rockville at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, FL, Day 2 was the complete opposite for most of the day. It started off sunny and hot and helped immensely drying off the grounds that were saturated with water. I had some fun stuff set up early in the day for The Photo Pit and was very excited to see that lineup of artists.
The day started off with an interview with John Cooper, vocalist and bassist of Skillet. This was an interview I was super excited to get and it was absolutely worth taking the time to do it. For those who don’t know, John is a huge fan of fantasy, sci-fi, and comic books. So we had some great discussions around Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Avengers: Endgame. We talked about the teaser to the new Skillet album, their current tour, and a follow-up tour that will have a stop in Orlando, FL, where I live. Look for that interview to be posted soon to The Photo Pit YouTube channel and on the website.
Afterward, I took a run over to the Zippo Sessions Stage for another interview. This one, I never thought would happen, so thank you to Alex from Zippo for getting this set up for me. As I waited by the stage, Jose Mangin walks in. He is the host of SiriusXM Octane and one of the hosts of SiriusXM Liquid Metal. Jose and I have met a few times and he remembered me. We talked a bit about the Zippo Sessions, our love for the festivals, and Jose teased about an upcoming project as well. It sounds like a new festival to me! Look for that interview to be posted soon to The Photo Pit YouTube channel and on the website.
And then it was on to photographing some of the bands playing that day. My first of the day ended up being Black Label Society at the Monster Energy Stage. The band is currently on their 20 Years of Sonic Brewtality Tour and will be releasing on May 17th their next album Sonic Brew – 20th Anniversary Blend 5.99 – 5.19. The album is a remaster of their first album Sonic Brew. As expected, Zak Wylde was a wild man on the guitar, shredding as no one else can, while singing. The huge crowd appreciated their performance, which was not surprising. Black Label Society is a fun band to watch.

On the Metropolitan Stage we had Skillet ready to rock our faces off. The band is known for getting the crowd moving with their anthem rock music and also known for being extremely energetic during their live performances. Today was no exception as John Cooper and his wife Korey Cooper were seriously rocking on stage. Jen Ledger, who I think is one of the best drummers today, played with such passion and you think she’s going to knock off her cymbals with every hit. Seth Morrison provided his own energy on stage getting the crowd engaged and getting very creative with his guitar playing. Skillet had a tremendous crowd and they were moshing, crowd surfing, and bouncing on their feet for the whole set.

It was then back to the Monster Energy Stage to see In This Moment perform. Their sets are always unique and the most fun for their hard rock/metal theatrical performances. With an entire church like background on the stage and the Blood Dolls performing in unison with Maria Brink, the band delivered a stellar performance. My personal favorite is always watching Travis Johnson performing with his piercing gaze and thunderous bass notes. In This Moment is still touring in support of their most recent album Ritual.

After a much-needed break from the heat and for some water, it was back to the Monster Energy Stage for a very special performance. Last year on May 4th at the former Carolina Rebellion, Shinedown released their latest album Attention Attention. The album was a tremendous success and today was the one year anniversary of the album’s release. Besides that, Jacksonville, FL is Shinedown‘s hometown. So this was a very special performance for them to play today. And when they hit the stage, you could feel the excitement from the crowd and the love and support they had for this band. There were so many people there to see them that you could clearly hear the fans singing back the songs from halfway across the venue. Shinedown must have fed off the fan’s energy because it was one the best sets I’ve seen them perform. And I was happy to see Brent Smith perform his normal ritual of having the crowd shake hands with their neighbors while he shakes hands with the photographers in the pit.

Back at the Metropolitan Stage after Shinedown was done, the legendary Judas Priest took the stage. The legendary British rockers were recently in Jacksonville, FL at Daily’s Place back in September 2018. The band is still touring in support of their most recent album Firepower. Judas Priest had some killer firepower going that night with some excellent mix of older and newer music in their catalog. Rob Halford came out on stage wearing a top hat with skulls and a long cane and changed outfits throughout the night and even rode out on a motorcycle when they performed “Hell Bent For Leather”. The crowd went berzerk for Judas Priest with moshing and crowd surfing. It was a great performance and personally was pleased they were on the lineup. Seeing Judas Priest is a performance you’ll never forget.

Last, and certainly not least, Rob Zombie played the Monster Energy Stage. The band is no stranger to the Danny Wimmer Presents festivals as they have played them numerous times in their career. Rob Zombie always puts on a performance that makes you feel alive. It’s entertaining, engaging, and honestly, you never know what to expect from them. And that night, they didn’t disappoint anyone. Rob Zombie, John 5, Piggie D., and Ginger Fish rocked the crowd with some favorites “Well, Everybody’s Fucking in a U.F.O., complete with a giant robot on stage, “Living Dead Girl”, and wrapping up the night with “Dragula”.

Welcome To Rockville Day 2 was a huge improvement to the craziness that occurred on Day 1. With great weather and a solid lineup, the fans absolutely appreciated the hard work all the bands put in on the stage.

A Ridiculous, Unnecessary, Idiotic Comparison: Lebron James vs R.E.M.
Sunday night, Lebron James accomplished something that only select players from the legendary Boston Celtics teams of the 1960s can brag about – 8 consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals. As the King prepares for another turn on the game’s grandest stage, it’s worth taking a moment and looking back and what Lebron pulled off in the last 7 championships series. After all, doing anything at such a high level for 7 straight years should be celebrated.
But James isn’t the only all-time great to put together 7 consecutive years of excellence. In each year from 1982 to 1988, the band R.E.M. released a fantastic record, each of which contributed to their indelible legacy.
What does one have to do with the other? Nothing. But 7 straight years of Finals appearances versus 7 straight years of brilliant music begs for an answer to a question no one would ever ask: Which run was more impressive?
After all, if people can debate Lebron vs Jordan, why not Lebron vs R.E.M.?
Year 1
Lebron James 2011
Lost to Mavericks (6 games)
Key Numbers: 17.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 6.8 APG
R.E.M. 1982
Chronic Town
Key Tracks: Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars), Wolves, Lower, Gardening at Night
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “We’ll stumble through the yard.” - Stumble
This one’s a slam dunk…sorry.
R.E.M.’s debut EP was set the standard for what was to come from one of the best American rock bands ever. Lebron’s first year with the Heat ended in a thud, with Dwyane Wade outplaying the King and Dallas winning Games 4-6 to capture its first title. No contest.
Verdict: R.E.M.
Year 2
Lebron James 2012
Won vs Thunder (5 games)
Key Numbers: 28.6 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 7.4 APG
R.E.M. 1983
Murmur
Key Tracks: Radio Free Europe, Catapult, Sitting Still
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “Not everyone can carry the weight of the world.” – Talk about the Passion
Everything came together for Lebron in the 2012 Finals. Taking the proverbial torch from Wade as the team’s clear leader, Lebron led the Heat in scoring in each game of the series, and finally captured that elusive 1st title, and 1st Finals MVP to boot. The first of many otherworldly performances for James on the game’s biggest stage.
But Murmur is awesome. And while Lebron would improve on that 2012 performance, R.E.M. never released a record as perfect as Murmur.
Verdict: R.E.M.
Year 3
Lebron James 2013
Won vs Spurs (7 games)
Key Numbers: 25.3 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 7 APG
R.E.M. 1984
Reckoning
Key Tracks: So. Central Rain, 7 Chinese Bros., (Don’t Go Back To) Rockville
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “Why are you trying to second guess me? I am tired of second guessing.” – Second Guessing
The most entertaining of Lebron’s 4 Finals appearances with Miami, the 2013 Finals may be best remembered for Ray Allen’s game tying shot in Game 6. But Lebron was the only player on either team to average over 20 points a game, en route to his 2nd straight Finals MVP and cementing him as one of the best to ever play the game.
R.E.M set impossible standards with Chronic Town and Murmur, and as a result, Reckoning – as great as it is – falls a little flat by comparison, despite the clear cut brilliance of So. Central Rain.
Verdict: Lebron James
Year 4
Lebron James 2014
Lost to Spurs (5 games)
Key Numbers: 28.2 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 4.0 APG
R.E.M. 1985
Fables of the Reconstruction/Reconstruction of the Fables
Key Tracks: Driver 8, Can’t Get There From Here, Feeling Gravitys Pull
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “Maybe he’s caught in the legend. Maybe he’s caught in the mood. Maybe these maps and legends have been misunderstood.” – Maps and Legends
Honestly, neither side deserves this one. Lebron’s last year in Miami sputtered out with a 5 game loss to San Antonio, despite gaudy personal numbers. Stories abound about the tension during the recording process for Fables, leading to R.E.M.’s worst record of the IRS era.
Still someone has to win, so because Lebron got out of Miami and returned home, he gets the edge.
Verdict: Lebron James
Year 5
Lebron James 2015
Lost to Warriors (6 games)
Key Numbers: 35.8 PPG, 13.3 RPG, 8.8 APG
R.E.M. 1986
Lifes Rich Pageant
Key Tracks: Fall on Me, Cuyahoga, Swan Swan H
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “I am, I am, I am Superman and I can do anything.” – Superman
What could have been in this series for Lebron. No Love, basically no Irving, and going up against a soon-to-be dynasty, and still puts up his best individual Finals performance.
But a loss is a loss, and Lifes Rich Pageant is anything but. Michael Stipe finds his voice and allows it to soar, delivering what may be a perfect song in “Fall on Me.”
Verdict: R.E.M.
Year 6
Lebron James 2016
Won vs Warriors (7 games)
Key Numbers: 29.7 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 8.9 APG
R.E.M. 1987

Key Tracks: The One I Love, It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Welcome to the Occupation
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “Your finest hour.” – Finest Worksong
Document is terrific, the result of a college rock band breaking through into the mainstream and delivering some of the band’s most iconic songs, ending their era as indie rock darlings and catapulting R.E.M. into the conversation of greatest American bands ever.
But Document didn’t come back from 3-1 down.
Document didn’t dethrone a 73-win team.
Document doesn’t have The Block.
Lebron’s defensive play against Andre Iguodala has already earned legendary status, and will only become more revered in time, particularly if Cleveland has to wait decades for another NBA title.
Verdict: Lebron James
Year 7
Lebron James 2017
Lost to Warriors (5 games)
Key Numbers: 33.6 PPG, 12.0 RPG, 10.0 APG
R.E.M. 1988
Green
Key Tracks: World Leader Pretend, Pop Song ’89, Stand
Album lyric which could apply to Lebron: “The stars are the greatest thing you’ve ever seen and they’re there for you.” – You are the Everything
No one was beating the Warriors in 2017. But, bless his heart, Lebron tried. Averaging a triple-double in the Finals, James did everything he could to take down Golden State’s superteam, but it was task even the King couldn’t conquer.
Things were looking different for R.E.M. too. Green marked the band’s departure from I.R.S., ushering in a new era for the group on a major label. With the transition to Warner came a new direction in songwriting, creating new elements to their music which would become even more defined in their next 2 releases, Out of Time & Automatic for the People.
So how do you cast the deciding vote here? Lebron’s individual performance was incredible, but he ran into a superior opponent. R.E.M. created something great, but when compared to some of their earlier and later work, it’s not among the band’s elite recordings. What it comes down to for me is this: No one was stopping R.E.M. from releasing a great album year after year. For Lebron to fight through the grind year after year and return to the championship round is an accomplishment heretofore unseen. Add to it his 2018 performance dragging a subpar roster back to the Finals – and Lebron takes the crown for this ridiculous exercise.
Final Verdict: Lebron James

Concert Recap: Black Veil Brides, Asking Alexandria, Bless the Fall--Part 1, the VIP experience
This is just me putting it out there in text what I remember on the night of May 4th, 2018. This would mark my 4th time seeing Black Veil Brides, my 3rd time THIS YEAR seeing Black Veil Brides and Asking Alexandria, and my first time seeing Bless The Fall. This isn’t even really a review so much as just me gushing about how much fun it all was, what I said when I met the bands, etc.
Call it a New Years Resolution, although I did make this promise to myself probably sometime around October last year: 2018 was going to be my year to ROCK. So I was going to hit up as many concerts as I could, and where applicable, do the VIP experience. Yes, you don’t want to know how much money I’ve spent in holding myself to this, but the memories are what is most important here.
I actually wrote a review/recap of the first concert I went to this year for BVB/AA back in February, but it was not posted. Perhaps I’ll go back and actually post it for comparison. At that time I did get a VIP pass for BVB, but not for AA.
THIS time, I decided to go crazy and do both. Asking Alexandria has very quickly become one of my favorite bands as I’ve gotten to know more about them and their music in the past year.
Waiting in line in front of the venue was a little bit different this time, because it was the time of year where we went from winter straight to summer here in Richmond, Virginia. It’s amazing how one week there’s a chance of snow and then the next week it’s nearly 90 degrees and so humid you walk outside and immediately feel damp. I only mention this because VIP passes are supposed to get you early entry into the venue while the rest of the population has to wait outside until the doors officially open. Emails had been sent days before to let those with VIP passes know what time they should be there so they wouldn’t miss when the VIP lanyards would be passed out. They needn’t have worried anyone would be late, though, as they were nearly an hour late letting us in from the time we were told to show up.
Somehow I found and made friends with the ONLY other people who decided to do the VIP experience for both bands. Since we had done that, we were given a lanyard for both and put at the front of the line to see Black Veil Brides, who had a longer VIP line. So my new friends were a group of 4 people who hadn’t done the VIP experience before, and I’m pretty sure at least 2 of them had never even been to a concert before. So, nerves were revved up, because meeting your heroes, especially for the first time, is a wonderful yet scary experience. I felt like I had acted like such a dork the last time, getting star struck by Andy, that this time around to safeguard against that I brought I some gift bags with silly presents to hand to each of them. They were just some cute little squishy stress ball things and Rubik’s cubes, but I had also found a Batman fidget cube and put that in Andy’s bag. In each bag there was also a hand written card wherein I thanked the band member for the specific reasons they were an inspiration to me. It sounds cheesy but it was heartfelt, and I really hope they have read the cards.
Anyway, having something to give to each of them worked, even if the experience was rushed. At least I didn’t just get all dopey and blurt out the first thing that came to mind when I looked at Andy.
Someone, either Andy or Jake, said “Oh hey, did you bring us lunch?” as I was handing the bags out. Heh. The only thing that came to mind was, “Oh no, I didn’t think they’d let me bring you food, I’m sorry.” Ashley noticed I was wearing my Welcome to Rockville tshirt from the week before, and asked if I had seen them play then. I was glad someone noticed. “Yes I did, and you guys were awesome as always!” I ask them to hold up something from the bag for the picture. Jinxx and CC hold up their actual bags (great, I did spend a lot of time putting their names on the bags in fancy lettering). Jake doesn’t hold up anything, Andy holds up the smiley squishy ball in his bag over my head, and Ashley holds up his squishy star shaped thing.
OK, time to step into the picture and let Yanni capture the moment on my phone. And then with that it was done. “Thanks guys! Enjoy the toys!” I say, then I have to go and head over to the Asking Alexandria line.
Now, before all the guys came out to greets all the guests, Yanni had briefed us for Black Veil Brides, we were allowed to give them gifts, but if we brought chocolate for Andy, Yanni warned, HE was going to eat it himself. I suppose if I ever get the chance to do the VIP thing with BVB again I’ll be bringing Yanni some chocolate. The other thing we were told was that we were not allowed to hug the guys, because chances were someone in the audience was sick and he didn’t want to put up with the whining if the guys got sick. What I would later find out was Andy was kind of having some throat problems anyway, seeing as how he had to cancel a show 2 nights later because he’d completely lost his voice at that point and on doctor’s orders could not sing for a few nights.
Asking Alexandria had no problems hugging their VIPs. So even though I was still kind of damp and sweaty from having stood out in the hot sun for 2 hours waiting to get inside to do this, they still gave me hugs. And they are ALL good huggers. All very sweet. Cameron was the first in line and just opened his arms. I remember apologizing to him and James that I was all sweaty. Danny was up next, and he also noticed my Rockville tshirt, and asked if I saw them play the week before. “I did, but I had a hell of a time getting over to see you guys after BVB’s set”, I told him. “Aw, you don’t need to see them anyway, they suck.” He says with a silly grin. Ever the comedian, is Danny Worsnop. We love him for it. I also thanked Danny for a Cameo vid he did that I had ordered for my sis-in-law for her birthday. Ben is up next and I tell him how I think his children are so beautiful and I live for his hashtags. (Avid follower on Instagram here). He was gracious and thanked me. I stood between him and Danny as our picture was taken, and then give Sam a hug as well. I tell the guys I can’t wait to see them perform and I love the new album, it might just be my favorite album. They are all smiles as I’m about to walk away, and Ben thanks me again.
Now on to part 2, which is the actual concert itself.

The epic lineup features two nights of Metallica along with incredible performances by Disturbed, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deftones, The Offspring, Godsmack, Social Distortion, Staind, Lamb of God and MANY more.
“As a lifelong fan, it was an overwhelming experience to attend Lynyrd Skynyrd’s final hometown show at a sold-out stadium (TIAA Bank Field) in Jacksonville in September of 2018. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a band that has known tragedy and responded with nothing but triumph for over 50 years. They defined Southern rock, and they were a definitive part of my own rock ’n’ roll education growing up in Jacksonville,” says Danny Wimmer, founder of Danny Wimmer Presents.
“After nine great years in Jacksonville, it was a difficult decision to move Welcome To Rockville to a new home – but it was a necessary decision for the festival to continue to grow and deliver the kind of experience that Florida’s rock fans deserve. I’m so humbled and honored that Lynyrd Skynyrd is coming with us to Daytona Beach to celebrate 10 years of Welcome to Rockville with their last-ever North Florida area show.”
