I came out of the festival toilets and loads of people were looking through the fence and apparently there were deer because we were next to a deer park and I was like who cares about those fuckers, the last deer I saw almost took out my rental car and had me doing a soccer mom arm save on my cousin on the way back from the liquor store last month at the family reunion and my husband had to remind me that they are NOT pests in this country and that people actually think they're very majestic.
#they were white stags and actually pretty majestic but whatever#once when I was a kid I suddenly couldn't hear my cartoons because of this cacophony outside so I opened the front door#And there were four stags with full antlers clomping down the sidewalk in front of my house#not the middle of the road the actual sidewalk#this was not the countryside this was literally right down the road from where Kamala went to elementary school#Major Metropolitan area deer out here giving zero fucks but sure let's ooh and ahh over the posh deer with their own park

I think that one of the things that draws me to Jackal is that he is, out of the full main cast, someone who grew up in the post-apocalyptic world and LIKES the world he grew up in.
Kanin and Sarren, both as people who knew what life was like pre-plague, of course see it as something that’s fallen into a shadow of what it was. Zeke, with the way he was raised and his push to get the cure to Eden, and then SEEING Eden as a city that feels essentially frozen in time, is in a similar boat. Even Allie, who grew up post-plague like Jackal and doesn’t have many connections to the past, sees the world as a broken thing. When she realizes Kanin started the plague, her knee jerk thought is ‘this is the person who ruined the world and allowed vampire cities to rise up.’
But Jackal? Sure, he wants the cure, he’s obsessive as Kanin, but he wants the cure to CHANGE the world, not revert it back to how it had been. When he fights Sarren, he says outright that he likes the world he lives in. He’s not fighting because he likes how the world could be, he’s doing it because he likes it as-is. And it makes sense! He was born decades after rabidism spread worldwide, he grew up on the frontier, he became a vampire and made something for himself not in spite of, but because of the apocalypse. If anything, he seems to resent the idea among vampires and city humans that the world— his world— is something lesser than what it used to be.
And for apocalyptic fiction, that’s a really fun perspective for me to read. I like someone who is willing to look at other characters, and a little at the reader, and say ‘how dare you act like my world is lesser when it is my home. How dare you pity me. It is MINE.’
#blood of Eden series#jackal (blood of eden)#this interpretation brought to you by reading YET ANOTHER early anthropologist’s work#about the poor poor culture who do not even know how bad they have it#Jackal grew up in a post apocalyptic hell and FUCK YOU he did FINE. he was HAPPY.#he was brutally shot and left to die of exposure but that wasn’t because of rabids that can happen in any metropolitan area#and tbh plenty of national parks

Devon, AB (No. 1)
Devon is a town in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada. It is approximately 26 km (16 mi) southwest of Edmonton, the provincial capital, along the southern bank of the North Saskatchewan River.
Devon owes its existence to one of the largest oil discoveries in the world. On February 13, 1947, the Imperial Leduc No. 1 well struck oil, and the new town of Devon was constructed shortly thereafter by Imperial Oil to accommodate its workers. The company was determined that the town would be well-planned, and Devon holds the distinction of being the first Canadian community to be approved by a regional planning commission. The oil industry remains a major player in the town's business sector, though the economy has diversified to include tourism, manufacturing, and research.
Devon is named after the Devonian formation (the strata tapped in the Leduc No. 1 oil well), which in turn is named for the county of Devon in England.

April 6, 2024 | Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan
When I was in Ueno Park, in Tokyo, Japan, I had wanted to visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum but did not end up doing so. I did get to check out its shop, which had hippos "made in Egypt" and stencil plates of hieroglyphics for sale.
Its online shop also has some Egyptian or Egyptian-inspired products, such as the Egyptian Acrylic Coaster Eye of Horus and the Egyptian Acrylic Coaster Tutankhamun.

D.N.R.
a poem by PKJ @novaksupremacy
You and I travel the same frequency,
it resonates in the marrow of my bones.
I am struggling to reconcile within myself,
all the innumerable moments
our paths have crossed unbeknownst to the other.
Same place, same time, same haunts.
Almost only counts in horseshoes and—
I’m sure you know the saying.
Passing trains preoccupied in a crowded station,
or in line for coffee:
Here let me get that.
No, it’s no trouble!
Damn, I should’ve said something—
anything else.
Logic and probability tell me that it has
happened, at least once. Maladaptive
daydreaming flashes a thousand still shots
of us brushing past each other in a crowded room,
an archaeology exhibit at the Met,
Natural History-- our history?
Always a New York minute apart.
Now? Now I have fallen in love
with the cadence of your voice,
earnestly and wholeheartedly
without earning the privilege.
The only thing that quells the loud,
angry buzzing inside my head,
and you speak as if handed a list
of all the things I have loved
despite ridicule and read it out loud.
I have always believed in fixed points and good character,
and somehow I still feel fated to know you,
or more so, that I already do.
Star-crossed crosswalks and now
I’m not sure which one of us
resides somewhere more foreign:
myself in a red state,
you in a red zone,
tethered to each other by a million fleeting glances.
