my mil : “so how is kaitlyn? is she sending thank you cards to everyone? it’s the LEAST she could do since they weren’t even invited to the wedding.”
we had ELEVEN GUESTS!!!! my own twin brother wasn’t even able to make it!!!! i’m not sending a thank you card to some random ass woman that you went to high school with, has no idea who i am, AND didn’t send ME a card or anything!!!!!

Just had a convo with a friend about this and I'm curious
I want to clarify that this is different than having fine china that you never use in a cabinet somewhere, these are regularly-used plates only for guests.
#johnsense#polls#it's traditional in my culture to have different table settings for guests#it's usually given as a wedding gift by either the bride's in laws or her oldest married sibling#(we don't traditionally give fine china I think that's an american thing)#they're nicer than your normal plates and used when non-family guests are over#ours were blue and white

Second-hand stress from a family member's wedding is reeeal
#wdym over 200 guests and counting?? wdym we all need tailored clothes to match??#and a gift for the bridal shower. and then possibly a bachelorette party gift. then the wedding itself#which is spanning two days.#like jesus how much will this cost?#and ofc my partner's brother has no problem just asking his parents to pay. as far as i can tell.#my partner and i love being different. we've been together for more than twice the amount of time -#- their brother and his fiancee have. and we're not planning to get married because we simply don't want to#but most importantly we don't feel like we need to? we're together already so...?#been together for nearly seven years. lived together almost that entire time. i just hope no one expects us to get married.#i just don't fucking understand it. all it is is stressful and needlessly expensive.#my parents got married at a courthouse and then had a potluck with friends in their backyard. 🤷🤷🤷#................wtf do you even buy for a bridal shower. i think im just stressed bc i'll have to be in a room -#- full of straight women i don't know. (I'll just make vague passive-aggressive posts on social media after the fact.)
#my mistake; i went on to facebook#if i'm not offended i don't see why anyone else should be#for the record:#i thank new boss for not inviting me to her wedding dinner#my social anxiety would not have enjoyed that meal#i did not get her a gift or make a bespoke card#when she came in on monday asked her about the Not Wedding#it was great except she's done the math and she's mad at whichever server accepted a different credit card#it's possible the venue just gave them a discount as they were very instant that none of their guests pay for anything#she didn't want the Not Wedding to be a Thing - nothing was changing!#my gift to her is asking no more questions and continuing to refer her now husband as her Partner#maybe a new dinosaur will show up in her office and if her four year old son just happened to love it...... *shrug*#pretty sure it's obvious who i'm more concerned about liking me here#new boss already likes me#the four year old only met me twice but gave me points because i complimented his dinosaur and gave him candy (after gaining permission)

#we have guests (two aunties who are sisters) and we were talking w them about the wedding#and one of them is really into fashion and she was like i have clothes i can give to you that i never wore#and they started making a plan of how we are going to go back to theirs to try them on...#now just waiting for them to decide when to go. so..#i hope they actually come to the walima bc we only have so many normal acquaintances 😭 the ratio of freaks to normals is so off#they are so nice tho they bought gifts for the couple and jewellery for us. which is more than our own direct family

A conversation at a wedding, beside the gifts table. There is a large box wrapped in violently purple paper sitting beside the table.
Guest: That's a big box. Wonder what's in it.
Me: A custom handmade quilt on an oak quilt rack.
Guest: Really?
Me: Yup. Wanna see?
Guest: Sure.
Me: *shows pics on my phone*
Guest: Wow. You made that?
Me: Yep. Finished it last night.
Guest: That's amazing. Very purple.
Me: Yeah, (bride) asked for that.
Guest: Oh, she knows about it?
Me: I worked with her on the design. But she hasn't seen the finished quilt yet. It's a surprise.
Guest: So you take commissions? Could you make one in, say, two weeks?
Me: That depends. Do you have ten thousand dollars?
Guest: What.
Me: Materials, labor, overtime to make that deadline--yeah, it would start at 10K. Might be higher if you wanted expensive materials or some really fancy technique.
Guest: That's a lot of money!
Me: It is.
Guest: Did you charge (bride) that much?
Me: No. Hers is a gift.
Guest: A ten thousand dollar gift?
Me: Well, to the extent that I am part of a quilting tradition at all, the tradition I'm part of is that quilts can ONLY be given as gifts. Anyone who could casually afford to pay for the amount of work involved in a quilt is probably not someone to be trusted with art.
Guest: Art?
Me: ART.
Guest: ...
Me: I also made her a nice satin dressing gown, which she wore for hair and makeup earlier.
Guest: Is that art, too?
Me: I mean, it's got pockets.

Thinking about how in my wedding we gave little cans filled with tea as gifts to the guests and one asked me what kind of tea it was, so I answered "oh, it's black tea with coffee beans and dark chocolate!" her eyes went so wide I thought they were gonna pop out of her skull and it reminded me that other people do react to caffeine and similar stimulants, which was a fact both my now spouse and I forgot when choosing the tea
