When I want to take a break from my riotous routine, I check for some place that would not only inspire me to explore but also provide me with a home away from home that would pamper me endless and all within my budget.

I found exactly that at Mukteshwar this time, Mukteshwar is a pleasing destination in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. Mukteshwar sits high in the Kumaon Hills at an altitude of 2286 meters, 51 Km from Nainital and 343 Km from Delhi. It is famous for its scenic view and peaceful atmosphere. As we were heading upwards we could see glistening mountains and stellar view left me gasping. After reading reviews on TRIP ADVISOR we had booked CASA DREAM, The Resort much in advance.

The very first view of our resort, CASA DREAM is just WOW. The hotel is nestled amidst stunning snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas which elevated my spirits and gave me a sense of serenity.

The lobby is cozy and gives you the feel of a luxurious English colonial house. My eyes wandered around to soak in the beauty of every inch as I sipped my welcome drink. I was amazed to see the hand-painted ceiling of the lobby exhibiting the galaxy theme which is done by the owner Mr. Umesh Chopra himself disclosing the secret of how this resort has been aesthetically designed. My expectations rose as I tagged behind the hotel boy who carried my luggage.

I was pleasantly surprised to see an elevator at this height, installed for the convenience of Senior citizens and wheelchair-bound guests which displays the considerate and caring attitude of the resort concerning their guest.

The room was quite big, simple, and luxurious enough for me to feel pampered with all the amenities like a king sized bed, free bottled water, coffee/tea maker, free Wi-Fi, flat screen TV with all my favorite channel. The room had two large windows giving us a clear view of a lush green garden and breathtaking valley with the Himalayas as the backdrop. Curled up on a chair, sipping my first tea in the balcony with this incredible view, a feeling of tranquility flows into my body.

There are three types of rooms in this resort. THE MUD DELUXE DOUBLE room which can accommodate three people, THE DELUXE DOUBLE room which can house two adults and two children, and THE DELUXE DUPLEX which is the biggest and can accommodate six people including two children providing the guest with the lot of options to choose from. Bathrooms are smart and stylish providing us free organic toiletries which is my weakness. All the rooms in this resort have balconies so that no occupant is deprived of the beauty of this heaven.

The resort had arranged bonfire at one corner of the garden in the evening with light recorded music which further enhanced the beauty of the surrounding and relaxed us more. Hotel staffs were pleased to serve us our favorite drinks and snacks and were very observant of our needs. The resort is very thoughtful of each and everyone needs and so lots of indoor games have been arranged for the kids and the kids were thrilled to find an entire area explicitly for them which kept them engaged and occupied.

 The dining hall was so spacious and beautifully decorated and could accommodate over a hundred people. I really loved the cute piano bar which serves classic cocktails, wines and various international labels, which can be savored with the overlooking garden and listening to live piano.

La Rose, a classic furnished restaurant within the hotel premises specializes in Indian and international cuisine, sports a drink bar and a separate kids’ menu for the comfort of the parents. Reservation can be done to enjoy a table and you can also avail room service within limited hours to enjoy your meal in the coziness of your room.

The resort manager invited us to try yoga classes in the morning. So, we all got up at sunrise and this quaint spot gave us a fabulous view of the valley, the first gorgeous sunlight on the snow-capped mountains and the cool breeze assured me of a rejuvenating stay and lot of surprises ahead.

After a quick yoga, we were asked if we were interested to trek up about 300 meters and see the table top mountain portion of their land. We were all very excited and I am a person who loves trekking as it uplifts my mood and gives me a sense of adventure. After 10-15 minutes’ walk, we reached a local residence, almost 100 years old made of mud but very neat and clean, making me feel as I have found a treasure after my adventure trail.

We were served tea and home-made cookies. It was interesting and very informative for us to interact with the locals, explore their kitchen, and discover ancient and scientific versions of houses in cold regions, especially during snow.

We continued our trekking and after a 5-minute walk, we reached a flat piece of land which gave us a complete 360-degree breathtaking view of Mukteshwar. Hotel staff informed us that they are preparing this area for a helipad which will be ready by 2019.

On our way back to resort, we were shown a small farming area where hotel staff grows their own organic vegetable and herbs for delicacies cooked in their kitchen revealing the secret of their mouthwatering dishes. It was time for breakfast and started trekking back to our resort still overwhelmed with all our experiences and I knew that best is yet to come.

We enjoyed our breakfast, got ready and set out to explore Mukteshwar. On our way to chauli ki Jali which is a famous tourist spot, we met a group of bikers, chatted with them about their experiences with a cup of tea in an authentic Indian cup(kullarh) at a local dhaba. They told us that they are on a 6days trip and taking a one night break in Mukteshwar in camps.

We reached Chauli ki Jali which is a paradise for all the adventurers and rock cliffs make this place ideal for activities like rock climbing, rappelling etc.

The hanging cliff makes it a spectacular location to view the great Himalayan range and Kumaon valley.

Our next location was Bhaalugaad waterfall, situated amidst of Mukteshwar forestand a beautiful trek of 3-4 km goes through the dense forest, mountain streams and rocks are to be covered to reach there. As it was a weekend we found a lot of rush there with people bathing, swimming and enjoying beautiful waterfall with crystal clear pond. We could actually go underneath waterfall which is bliss for nature lovers.

We stopped for lunch at a small local dhaba cum restaurant for lunch which we did not enjoy much and found a better alternative, our all-time favorite Maggie masala. We reached our resort and after taking a small nap, we decided to play cricket with kids which we seldom do because of our hectic schedules in the city. Hotel staff also joined us and it was a big competitive fight. We lost three balls as balls used to fly off into the valley and it was a difficult task not to hit a ball when you have so much space to enjoy. The night was rocking as the hotel had organized a DJ party for all the guests and after a long day, we all let our hair down and enjoyed the great music and dance till we were dead tired.

Next day we packed our bags and were ready to leave. We took plenty of family photographs to seize beautiful resort and magnificent Himalayan ranges to keep these lovely moments fresh with us until our next exciting trip.

On our way back we stopped at Bhimtal, a must stopover, enjoyed boating with kids, had snacks and tea at a nice local restaurant and a final nonstop drive to our home.

As the destinations, you visit matters a lot, same way a nice, comfortable and beautiful hotel makes your trips more pleasurable and unforgetful.

‘The Almost Complete’ History and Architecture of Shri Jain Shwetamber Pracheen Tirth, Kaparda

Through a small gate in a small town of Kaparda, located in Rajasthan, India we were welcomed by this magnificent 4 storey Temple.

History

Our story begins with a hakim whose name was Shri Banaji. Hakim usually meant a healer or a doctor in old days, it also meant an administrative officer, hence the word ‘hakim’ is open for interpretation at this point. Shri Banaji used to reside at Jetaran, a small town in Rajasthan.

In those times Rajasthan was ruled by Maharaja Gaj Singhji of Marwar Dynasty of Jodhpur (7th September 1619 – 6th May 1638).

A competitor of Shri Banaji had fed false information about the practices of the Hakim to the Maharaja. Annoyed by this the had summoned Shri Banaji to his court for clarification.

After receiving the summons, Banaji was afraid. He just had an outline of why he was being summoned but the complete details were to be disclosed when he reached Maharaja of Jodhpur.

Shri Banaji had a habit of not having any meals before praying, bowing his head to a Jain Tirthankara. So on his way, he stopped at Kapardaji,  old names of which were Karpathedak or Kapadheda. He knew that in recent years an ancient idol of Shri Svayambhu Parshwanathji had been unearthed under a dense cover of Babool Trees in the year V.S. 1674 i.e. 1617 A.D which was then shifted to an Upashray. Shri Banaji made a stop there and prayed to the god.

In the Upashray he met a Yati (an ancient term for Jain Monk). When the yati asked for the reason for travel, Shri Banaji explained the whole situation to him. The monk told the hakim not to worry, the trip would be successful and the king would appreciate him as he is innocent. Banaji continued his journey towards Jodhpur.

Meanwhile, the king in jodhpur investigated the claims and found that Shri Banaji was innocent. When the Hakim arrived at Jodhpur, he was informed of his innocence and was awarded 500 Silver coins for the trouble caused.

Banaji returned back to the Yati and told him how the events turned out in his favour in Jodhpur. On hearing this, the monk suggested building a derasar at Kaparda. Shri Banaji immediately agreed the proposal and the monk blessed the silver coin bag, which made sure nothing would interrupt the goal of building a derasar at Kaparda, but on one condition, the bag never falls on the ground or be turned.

Banaji now was completely involved in the construction of the derasar with all his heart. The first foundation for the temple was laid by Shri Narsingh, son of Shri Banaji.

While the construction was near completion, Shri Narsingh turned the bag out of curiosity, and all the coins fell down. The Jain monk was informed of this mistake and he instructed Shri Narsingh to call Shri Banaji to the temple as soon as possible.

When Shri Banaji arrived the derasar was more or less near completion. Hence requests were made to Shri Acharya Jinchandra Surishwarji for the establishment of the derasar. Acharya recommended establishing the temple with the idol of Jain Tirthankar, Shri Svayambhu Parshwanath.

The temple was then inaugurated by the Acharya and a huge celebration was made in the presence of Maharaja Gaj Singh. The temple was inaugurated in V.S. 1678 i.e. 1621 A.D.

Around V.S. 1975 i.e. 1918 A.D. Shri Acharya Nemi Surishvarji visited the temple and found that it is in very bad condition and decided to renovate it. The moolnayak was re-established with 15 other idols on V.S. 1975 i.e. 1918 A.D.

Architecture

This 4 storied temple has a very unique architecture. It has four entrances, hence welcoming the devotees from all directions. The peak of the derasar is 95 feet above the ground.

*Personal Observations ahead*

The temple was still under renovation from the inside. By the looks of it, touch ups had to be made.

By the looks of the temple entrance, the doors and the grills were fairly new, which does dampen the beauty of the place and lights were attached to the temple, probably for lighting up the place at night. But the pillars and arches looked old.

There was a clear indication that some parts of the temple were repainted to avoid degradation.

The dancers and the musicians decorating the pillars of the temple were beautifully carved in tandem with the floral motif designs.

2 small temples dedicated to Shri Chakreshwari Devi and Shri Manibhadraveer stands outside the main temple. These are Yaksh and Yakshini temples which provide protection to the main temple.

Choumukhji (an idol for each direction) were established on all the four storeys of the temple.

The interiors of the temple were a whole different story altogether. The place left us charmed. There was a peace of mind as though it was isolated from the world outside.

After paying our respects to Shri Parshwanathji, we started exploring the place.

The ceiling was designed with Inverted lotus formations in the centre and surrounds by 16 Vidhyadevis. The dancers and musicians supported the weight of the pillars giving it an alluring look.

Stone Tablets with Sanskrit wordings were embedded in the pillar. A translation would surely be helpful.

As it was 3 in the afternoon most of the gabharas were closed. But even the doors to the gabhara were interesting. The doors were decorated with Astamangal, Eight auspicious signs of Jainism, with 2 Elephants holding a Kalash and 2 Chauri bearers.

The doors decorated with multicolour windows on a door were too beautiful to ignore.

We also found 2 marble jalis (latticed screens) with a depiction of Tirthankara sitting under Kalpavriksha served by 2 angels, 2 cows and 2 shravaks. The second jali depicted dreams of a mother who is about to give birth to a Tirthankara.

There were other stone jalis with incredible floral design and peacocks.

The 4 marble plaques near the moolnayak, explains the details regarding the history and mythology surrounding the temple.

Then we decided to go on the 1st level of the temple. Watching the beautiful lion sculptures on the ceiling was a sheer delight. Also, the wonderful sculptures of 2nd and 3rd level were more clearly visible.

I personally refrained from going to the further levels but would have been wonderful to look at the town from such a height.
