I've been working on a lesson plan based on the picture books IGGY PECK, ARCHITECT & YOUNG FRANK, ARCHITECT and decided to try it out on my first graders today. We read both books, watched videos on bridges & bridge building then talked about city planning. We discussed our different rolls, broke into groups and got busy building! I was especially impressed with how the bridge builders tackled their job and collaborated. Everyone was engaged & excited! @andreabeatyauthor #iggypeckarchitect @frankviva #youngfrank #library #librarylife #librarybooks #lessonplanning #lessonplans @eleducation #collaboration #wearecrew #cityplanning #kapla #magnatiles #riversandroads #books4yourkids #elementaryschool #elementaryschoollibrarian #build #create #createexplore #picturebooks #kidsbookstagram #kidsbooks #stem #stemschool

EL Education today kicks off its annual conference to inspire best practices in 150 district and charter schools with 45,000 students and 4,000 teachers. Fund for Teachers honors this work, and our exemplary Fellows from this network, by sharing the story of EL teacher & FFT Fellow Sara Boeck, who designed her FFT fellowship to research past and present resistance movements in Mexico as a model for student writing and meaningful resistance to injustice in local communities.
As a social justice educator, the struggle to continue moving forward in the face of increasing inequity and global and local problems is difficult. Researching in central and southern Mexico this summer with my Fund for Teachers grant not only gave me countless practical materials, texts, artifacts, interviews, and photographs to bring back to my students, but it also revitalized my passion for social justice and renewed my belief that the struggle of social justice is worth it.
Over the course of six weeks, I met women’s rights activists providing support for women in indigenous communities in central Mexico; professors committed to lifting the indigenous culture into the space of the dominant culture of formal education; LGBTQ activists and scholars who know that change will come and believe that the system can be changed; and ordinary women and men empowering families and inspiring gender equity to help their communities walk away from the legacy of machismo. I learned from historical figures that have not accepted inequity as the status quo:
Comandante Marcos and the thousands of Zapatistas who have been fighting since the 1990s for indigenous liberation from colonization.
Frida Khalo has used her art and public presence to challenge gender norms and move the struggles of living with a disability to the forefront.
Emiliano Zapata led the Mexican revolution, with the help of millions to release Mexico from the imperialist control of Spain.
Modern day activists who fight the impact of the drug war on small Mexican communities and the search for the murdered 43 student teachers in Ayotzinapa.
Each of these unique learning experiences inspired me to my core and filled me with a passion I brought back to my classroom, but also my life as a citizen.
Moving into this school year, my curriculum has a new fire. The theoretical ideas of creating a more just world have real world examples of actual activism in a country with far fewer resources than we possess in our local community. “Reading the world” takes on a new life with voices of people I met and texts I brought back and am incorporating into my classroom, including short stories from Latin American women authors and documentary films, such as La Jaula de Oro. The texts, resources, artifacts and bits of history also found relevance in the history department curriculum. We are beginning an inter-department book club with The Open Veins of Latin America, a book that was repeatedly recommended to me during my fellowship. The true goal of EL schools is for lessons to impact local communities. Hearing from these modern-day activists in Mexico will help my students see the real impact of people, even those disenfranchised by society, achieving social change. Our intense classroom discussions of social problems, like child labor, gender equity and racism will shift from a sense of powerlessness to a strong sense of empowerment: that the students can really do something for their fellow human beings. Furthermore, I revamped my unit on advocacy for global problems to include a model for making real activist work out of our ideas. Students will now develop an activist project in this expedition and have advice to guide their choices from the women at La Casa de la Mujer Indigena including their strategy for addressing local problems in their own communities. Lastly, I am starting an extracurricular club to train community organizers. We will be using Skype to talk with experts I met in order to learn the strategies to motivate and mobilize the community.
My Fund for Teachers fellowship truly shifted my world-view. In the past six years of my teaching career, I’ve been passionate about social justice, but in a bubble. I worked to be globally aware, but there is only so much that you can learn within the United States. This fellowship opened my eyes, gave me a renewed passion and provided me with a historical context for the work I do that bursts the bubble I once functioned within. Modern society has been formed by the exploitation of certain groups of people. But this fellowship helped me believe in a world where people are the answer. This is my greatest take away from this experience. People care about others and will totally amaze you if you’re willing to step outside of your comfort zone.
It has been disheartening at times to believe that change and equity can come from the bottom and truly make a difference. But after meeting so many inspiring, passionate people with only those traits moving them forward, I truly believe that change will happen. Equity will come, because people are good to each other. This realization has brought me peace and the resilience to keep teaching.
Sara Boeck is an English teacher at Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders in Brooklyn, NY. She values student voice in the classroom and the community and teaches from a social justice perspective. Sara's interests, which are reflected in her practice, include: youth activism, privilege and oppression, and race and other social constructs.
