SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

[ 📹 Children of Gaza protest the extreme hunger and famine they are experiencing, chanting slogans saying, "We have been under brutal siege for 135 days. No food, no water, no medicine!"]
[ 📸 An infographic published by the Quds News Network detailing that food aid trucks entering the Gaza Strip have been reduced by more than a third.]
🇮🇱⚔️🇵🇸 🚨
ISRAELI ENTITY REFUSING TO COMPLY WITH ICJ DECISION, FOOD AID TO GAZA DROPS BY A THIRD
In a report issued by Human Rights Watch, the rights organization says that, in the month since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its ruling, the Israeli entity has refused to comply with the decision, continuing its genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the Palestinian enclave.
Back on January 26th, 2024, the ICJ issued a ruling where, citing "catastrophic conditions" in the Gaza Strip, the ICJ ordered Israeli authorities to “take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian aid,” and to report back to the Court with evidence of its compliance to the ordered measures “within one month.”
Now, one month following the ICJ ruling, the Israeli occupation continues to "obstruct the provision of basic services and the entry and distribution within Gaza of fuel and lifesaving aid," all while committing "acts of collective punishment that amount to war crimes and include the use of starvation of civilians as a weapon of war."
Human Rights Watch says that "fewer trucks have entered Gaza and fewer aid missions have been permitted to reach northern Gaza" in the month after the ICJ ruling, over the weeks preceeding it, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
“The Israeli government is starving Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians, putting them in even more peril than before the World Court’s binding order,” said Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch. “The Israeli government has simply ignored the court’s ruling, and in some ways even intensified its repression, including further blocking lifesaving aid.”
Human Rights Watch emphasized that "other countries should use all forms of leverage, including sanctions and embargoes to press the Israeli government to comply with the Court's binding orders in the genocide case."
Human Rights Watch previously found in December of 2023 that the Israeli authorities were "using starvation as a weapon of war" as part of a policy "set out by Israeli officials and carried out by Israeli forces" to deliberately block the delivery of food, water and fuel, "willfully impeding humanitarian assistance."
According to data published by OCHA and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA), the average number of trucks entering Gaza with food, aid supplies and medicine "dropped by more than a third in the weeks following the ICJ decision, with 93 humanitarian aid trucks entering Gaza between January 27th and February 21st, 2024, compared with 147 trucks between January 1st and January 26th, 2024, and only 57 trucks between February 9th and February 21st, 2024.
A survey of "impediments to the entry of aid" faced by the 24 humanitarian organizations operating in the Gaza Strip between January 26th and February 15th, 2024 "pointed to a lack of transparency around how aid trucks can enter Gaza, delays and denials at Israeli crossings and inspection points, and concerns about safety of trucks."
By comparison, Human Rights Watch says that an average of 500 trucks filled with food and goods entered Gaza each day prior to the escalation of hostilities beginning on October 7th, 2023, during which time 1.2 million Palestinians in Gaza were estimated to to be "facing acute food insecurity," with 80% of Gaza's population reliant on humanitarian aid under Israel's 16-years-long blockade of the Palestinian enclave, which Human Rights Watch calls "unlawful."
"High-ranking Israeli officials have articulated a policy to deprive civilians of food, water, and fuel, as Human Rights Watch has documented," the rights organization said.
The Israeli authorities, for their part, blame the UN for "distribution delays," and accuse Hamas of "diverting aid" and the Gaza police for "failing to secure aid convoys."
"The Israeli government cannot shift blame to evade responsibility," Human Rights Watch said in its report.
"Israel is obliged to provide for the welfare of the occupied population and ensure that the humanitarian needs of Gaza’s population are met. The Israeli human rights group Gisha challenged the Israeli government’s claims that it is not obstructing entry or distribution of aid and also found that it is not complying with the ICJ order."
Human Rights Watch also accuses Israel of destroying the offices of at least two humanitarian organizations and have undermined the work of UNRWA, the largest such aid organization currently operating in the Gaza Strip, with the organization's chief, Phillippe Lazzarini, stating in a letter on February 22nd that the aid organization has reached the "breaking point" due to suspensions of funding after accusations by Israel that a handful of its personnel were involved peripherally in the October 7th attacks on illegal Israeli settlements.
The report also blames Israeli Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, for blocking aid shipments, including a shipment of Flour from the United States, because "it was going to UNRWA," based on the accusations that 12 of the Agency's 30'000 employees might have participated, directly or indirectly, in the October 7th attacks, which the United Nations is currently investigating.
According to the report, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a multiparty initiative, concluded that "over 90% of Gaza's population is at a crises level of acute food insecurity or worse," with the IPC emphasizing that "virtually all Palestinians in Gaza" are regularly skipping meals as a result of near famine conditions in the enclave, while adults commonly go without eating entirely in order for their children to eat.
“This is the highest share of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity that the IPC initiative has ever classified for any given area or country,” the group is quoted as saying.
Furthermore, on February 19th, a study published by the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported that over 90% of children under the age of 2, and 95% of pregnant and breastfeeding women are facing "severe food poverty," while on February 22nd, the organization Save the Children said Gaza's Palestinian families are "forced to forage for scraps of food left by rats and eating leaves out of desperation to survive." The organization also added that, "all 1.1 million children in Gaza [are] facing starvation."
The ICJ's ruling orders Israel to "protect the rights claimed by South Africa that the Court has found to be plausible," including "the right of the Palestinians in Gaza to be protected from acts of genocide," and although South Africa asked the Court to provide "provisional measures" to make any report it ordered public, the court has not yet done so.
However, since the Court's ruling, in the period from January 26th to February 23rd, the Israeli occupation has slaughtered more than 3'400 Palestinians, according to figures from Gaza's Ministry of Health and compiled by OCHA.
According to Human Rights Watch, "South Africa's case against Israel for genocide is distinct from the proceedings on the legal consequences of Israel's 57-year occupation, which began at the ICJ on February 19th."
According to Human Rights Watch's Israel and Palestine director, Shakir Omar, "Israel’s blatant disregard for the World Court’s order poses a direct challenge to the rules-based international order."
“Failure to ensure Israel’s compliance puts the lives of millions of Palestinians at risk and threatens to undermine the institutions charged with ensuring respect for international law and the system that ensures civilian protection worldwide," the director added.

The Wonders of Old New York
When engaging with the charming society of New York, patience is a virtue. Avoid rushing through your romantic dalliances. Take your time exploring the city. Spend a few days immersing yourself in its wonders. Reconnect & expand your network of acquaintances. Survey the bustling markets to discover where you can find the best deals & fresh ideas.
If you have a favored establishment for your shopping visit it. Greet your old friends warmly, regardless of the state of their hairlines. Venture out to gather insights but be mindful not to indulge excessively in liquid lunches.
Patience, once again, is key. Allow yourself the luxury of extra time.
Visit the lead retail stores to glean inspiration from their impressive displays. Learn the art of window dressing, no matter your trade—whether it be christening caps, caramels, corsets, shoes, soda water, or even burial cases. A thoughtfully arranged and eye-catching display captures attention and leaves an impression far more effective than a haphazard presentation.
Embrace the rhythm of the city & let New York’s charm unfold before you at its own magnificent pace. As you explore the bustling streets of New York City, hunt for new articles to enhance your inventory & attract your tourists. Keep an eye out for novelties—these are treasuring that appeal to everyone, except perhaps those who prefer hairs in their butter. Year by year, the demand for unique & innovative items continues to grow.
Should you find the supply of novelties lacking, don’t hesitate to fall back on the tried & true. Stock up on “chestnuts”—those classic, well-loved stories & items. Consult with seasoned salesmen & ask if they have any fresh tales or products. Engage with the locals & let them show you what’s new, novel, & delightful. This will help you identify what your own town might need to charm & satisfy tourists from nearby crossroads, hamlets, & villages.
Remember, the art of entertainment is invaluable & ever rewarding when executed well. And New Yorkers are masters of this art.
Now that you’ve decided to extend your stay, take advantage of the opportunity to gather useful information that can save you money, reduce travel, & minimize inconvenience. In this grand city, such knowledge is plentiful.
So, immerse yourself fully in the wonders of Old New York. Given that New York City is the largest metropolis on the American continent & practically the world unto itself, it’s certainly worth your while to explore & experience as much of it as possible.
When your business brings you to New York, see if you can combine pleasure with your professional duties. Witness the latest fashions, observe how people conduct themselves at hotels, theaters, churches, & the various resorts around the city where people gather for leisure & refreshment. Do not claim that you can’t afford this—because you can. Absorb the latest trends & fill your trunk with new goods. Take notes on how you’ll dress & what you’ll wear upon returning home. Within three weeks, you’ll have the entire town buzzing, moving from place to place & showcasing evidence that you’ve been somewhere & brought something back.
Visit the theaters. Attend the churches. Take time to enjoy the parks. Ride the entire length of the elevated railway on each side of the Island from the Battery to the end of the road, & this as far into the country as you can go & see how much there is of New York City. Don’t content yourself merely by seeing what is to be seen directly on the Island of Manhattan, generally known as the city of New York.
Go down to the Battery or South Ferry, take a steamboat ride to Bedloe’s Island, & walk around the Bartholdi Statue. Twenty-five cents pays the steamboat fare there & back.
Take the little steamer which plies every hour between the Battery & Governor’s Island. See where the soldiers who are here to guard the city of New York from invasion are quartered. See where General Hancock lived so long. Walk around & see how nicely everything here is kept. Go into the museum wherein are to be found thousands of relics of battles by sea & land. Visit the fortifications & get an idea how war is carried on—in theory if not in practice. The little boat runs to & from the city to Governor’s Island every 30 minutes as part of the Government Service, carrying over & bringing back without charge those who would make the trip.
Take a boat to Staten Island from the Battery & put in an afternoon there witnessing the games & amusements which are furnished for the recreation of ten thousands of people who go there each week to enjoy an eight-mile steamboat ride across New York Bay & eight miles return.
Ride over Staten Island or a portion of it by carriage. It’s one of the most enjoyable trips. There are good livery stable establishments to be found on Staten Island, especially at the first landings. The roads are generally very good & as one drives to the higher ground three or four hundred feet above the sea, the view of land & ocean, cities & villages, lakes, bays, ponds & creeks, with threads of railway reaching off into the distance creating a very charming picture, that you’ll never forget.
Visit Coney Island where the so-called mediocrity of New York gathers to the number of twenty thousand on a week day, & one hundred thousand on a Sunday.
You can make the trip on the large iron steamboats from the Battery to Coney Island & return at any time during the day for 50 cents the round trip, or you can go by cars two or three different lines at the same rate of fare. At Coney Island you can roll in the sand, wade into the ocean as far as you feel like going, eat clams, drink ginger ale, & other beverages o refresh the arid tonsils. Take in 100 or more variety shows & see men & women, boys & girls, lovers & sweethearts, babies, dogs, etc. Enjoying surf bathing, which is here to be had in abundance, with officers handy to keep you from getting in beyond your depth, or from trying to cross the ocean on foot.
Coney Island is a curiosity. Once it was a barren stretch of sand worth something like $500,000 or less than nothing. Now it’s a summer city of the beach, a sort of piratical rendezvous where one man appears to be bishop, king, commissioner, mayor, levier of taxes, collector of customs, comptroller of political destinies, etc., so that Robinson Crusoe on his lonely Island wasn’t more of a monarch over what he surveyed than is the head of political-financial combination governing that part of New York known as Coney Island. It’s a curiosity that should be seen, as it alone would give you something to talk about for a month.
A very delightful trip is that by steamer to Rockaway Beach & to Far Rockaway, especially if you want a sniff of ocean air—clean, fresh, & invigorating. Or you can have a steamboat ride to Long Branch & return for a few dimes.
Another charming trip is up the East River, past Blackwell’s Island, Ward’s Island, Fort Schuyler, out into Long Island Sound, past Hart’s Island, which is the pauper burial ground, & then a mile or two beyond to Glen Island, which has been fitted up in magnificent style as a summer resort, & where the old-fashioned clam bake, together with meat, drink & musical accompaniments can be enjoyed ad libitum. After that, you can wander about to see the curiosities, rest in the shade, enjoy the sea breeze, listen to music.
Another good thing to do is to visit the Charity & Correction institutions of New York. To do this properly call at the corner of 11th Street & Third Ave., at the office of the Commissioners of Charities & Corrections. Go into the office & introduce yourself to Mr. Simmons, Mr. Porter or Mr. Brennan, who are the three Commissioners of Charities & Corrections for the City of New York, & who have about sixteen thousand persons under their care, comprising the prison, almshouse, workhouse, & hospital population of the city, & their attendants. You’ll find these gentlemen well-posted, very pleasant & always willing to give or afford strangers visiting New York every possible opportunity to acquaint themselves with the workings of the Charity & Correction institutions of the city, which includes the Tombs, all the police courts, the prisons, hospitals, insane asylums, workhouses, & educational establishments, wherein children of the poor & unfortunate are taught. After that you’ll have obtained a pass from the Commissioners. Go to the foot of East 26th Street, which is on the East & the East River side of New York.
At the foot of East 26th Street, standing in the water a little way from the shore, but reached from the grounds of Bellevue Hospital, is the “dead house,” in which are kept for a day or so the bodies of those who are brought in from the city, fished out from the river, etc., and which bodies are eventually, unless claimed by relatives, taken to the pauper burial ground at Hart’s Island for interment. You can get on with a pass, if you’re alive, & if you go on dead you can get out with a cheap pine coffin costing about 21 cents.
At 10 o’clock every forenoon the large & beautiful steamer Thomas S. Brennan, named after the popular & gentlemanly Commissioner of Charities, leaves this dock on a business trip up the East River. Here you get aboard. If you’re early enough you’ll see the many prison vans or iron omnibuses filled with prisoners brought from the prisons & police courts of the city to this point for shipment to the Penitentiary on Blackwell’s Island & to the Workhouse on Hart’s Island.
The Steamer Brennan is the service of the city exclusively. Its business is to convey parties from the city to Charity Hospital on Blackwell’s Island, which is the first landing. To convey prisoners to the Penitentiary, to the large stone building, which is within a stone’s throw of the Charity Hospital.
Patients for the hospital & prisoners for the penitentiary are discharged at the same landing, where the officers receive & escort them to the hospital & the prisoners to the penitentiary, where they are sheared, bathed, etc., & assigned to the several tasks the superintendent of the Penitentiary deems them fit to work at.
Relieved of this much of her load, the Brennan goes on up the river to the Workhouse, landing there from 75 to 150 men & women each morning, who are marched off & escorted to the Workhouse, where they’re given work to do for a time altogether too short. Supplies for the inhabitants of the Island, which number several thousand, including the inmates of the Female Insane Asylum, which is also on Blackwell’s Island, are here put off for distribution.
This done, the Brennan goes on up the East River, through Hell Gate, to Ward’s Island, on which is the large Homeopathic Hospital, one of the finest of its class in the world, also the insane asylums for males. This is the largest insane asylum on the American continent. It covers several acres of ground, & is occupied by something like 2000 men, a large portion of whom are insane, while a certain percentage are sane, but are unfortunately run in here & kept appeasing the envy, malice, or ugliness of persons who delight in thus torturing those they have a spite against or by saddling their support upon the city.
After discharging the patients & guests who come to see relatives in the hospital & asylums, the Brennan returns a little way, then proceeds up the Harlem River to Randall’s Island, on which is located Mrs. Dunphy’s celebrated school for “idiotic, imbecile or feeble-minded children & homes for idiots who cannot be taught,” & other departments of this nature, all connected or attached to the Charity & Correction department. Here also is the Foundlings’ Home, where are about 400 babies, from one day to four years of age, cared for by nurses.
This takes the time till about half past 12, when the boat returns, stopping a few moments at Hart’s Island, & reaching her dock at the foot of East 26th Street somewhere about 1:30 PM, affording those who care to see a great deal in a little while an opportunity of obtaining information that, if not altogether pleasant, is certainly worth knowing. You’ll get ideas worth taking home with you.

From Extraction to Usage: The Lifecycle of Natural Gas
The journey of natural gas from the depths of the earth to the blue flames on a stove is a complex and multifaceted process. As a fossil fuel, natural gas plays a pivotal role in the global energy supply, accounting for approximately 24% of global energy consumption. This narrative will traverse through the lifecycle of natural gas, highlighting the intricacies involved in its extraction, processing, transportation, and usage, as well as its environmental and economic impacts.
Extraction and Production:
Natural gas extraction begins with geological surveys to identify promising reserves, followed by drilling either on land or offshore. In 2022, the United States, one of the largest producers, extracted approximately 99.6 billion cubic feet per day. The extraction often employs techniques like hydraulic fracturing, which alone contributed to around 67% of the total U.S. natural gas output in 2018. The extracted gas, containing various hydrocarbons and impurities, requires substantial processing to meet commercial quality standards.
Processing and Purification:
Once extracted, natural gas undergoes several processing steps to remove water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and other contaminants. This purification is essential not only for safety and environmental reasons but also to increase the energy efficiency of the gas. Processing plants across the globe refine thousands of cubic feet of raw gas each day, ensuring that the final product delivered is almost pure methane, which is efficient for burning and less polluting than unprocessed gas.
Transportation:
Transporting natural gas involves an expansive network of pipelines covering over a million miles in the United States alone. In regions where pipeline infrastructure is not feasible, liquified natural gas (LNG) provides an alternative. LNG exports from the U.S. reached record highs in 2022, with approximately 10.6 billion cubic feet per day being shipped to international markets. LNG carriers and storage facilities are integral to this global trade, making natural gas accessible worldwide.
Storage:
Strategic storage ensures that natural gas can meet fluctuating demands, particularly during peak usage periods. Underground storage facilities can hold vast quantities; for instance, the U.S. can store approximately 4 trillion cubic feet of gas, helping to manage supply and stabilize prices. These reserves play a critical role in energy security and in buffering any unexpected disruptions in supply.
Distribution:
Natural gas distribution is the final leg before reaching end-users. Companies manage complex distribution networks to deliver gas to industrial facilities, power plants, commercial establishments, and residences. The U.S. alone has over 2 million miles of distribution pipelines, ensuring that natural gas accounts for nearly 30% of the country’s electricity generation and heating for about half of American homes.
Usage and Consumption:
The versatility of natural gas makes it a preferred source for heating, cooking, electricity generation, and even as a feedstock for producing plastics and chemicals. In the residential sector, an average American home might consume about 200 cubic feet per day for heating and cooking. For electricity, combined-cycle gas turbine plants convert natural gas into electricity with more than 60% efficiency, significantly higher than other fossil-fueled power plants.
Environmental Considerations and Future Prospects:
While natural gas burns cleaner than coal, releasing up to 60% less CO2 for the same energy output, it is not without environmental challenges. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, can escape during various stages of the natural gas lifecycle. However, advances in technology and regulatory measures aim to mitigate these emissions. As the world leans towards a lower-carbon future, the role of natural gas is pivotal, with investments in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and the potential integration with renewable energy sources.

I've decided that whenever this blog gets hate I'm going to write a drabble with Sirona in it!
Gen, 1,138, Sirona + MC (Dylan Fairchild) - Dylan tries to thank Sirona for her help against Rookwood
Dylan stood outside of Floriblunders' Florist, dithering and trying desperately not to appear like they were. After all, it wouldn't due to have the "Hero of Hogsmeade" - as one inebriated gentlemen had hailed them - looking like a fool outside a flower shop. Maybe it was better to just order something by owl? Or better yet, forget this whole, impulsive idea.
Problem was, Dylan may not have remembered much about their mother, but they did recall the early lesson dolled out during mealtimes, or out on the street, or whenever another child had been cruel to them: be kind, even when it's hard. It simply didn't feel right, approaching another for a favor without something to offer in turn, especially when they'd already done Dylan a kindness. Merlin, Sirona might have saved their life. Picking up flowers for her seemed like the very least they could do.
But how did you even ask for that? "Good afternoon! I'd like a bouquet that says, 'Thank you for running off the goblin-aligned Dark Wizard last month and do you mind if I interrogate you for contacts?'"
Dylan snorted, the imagined look on the florist's face nearly worth it. But they shook their head. A quick Tempus showed that it would be dark soon and though the Three Broomsticks would be open late into the night, the last thing they wanted was to bring Ranrok up in a crowd. No, better to do this before the regulars came shambling in. With a shake of their head Dylan pasted on a smile, hefted a rather absurd number of galleons, and pointed to the first, impressive-looking flowers as they came through the door.
Well, it was the thought that counts, right? Besides, if Sirona hated it, they could always repurpose... whatever these were for potion ingredients. No doubt Professor Sharp would have something useful up his sleeve.
Only vaguely satisfied with Plan B, Dylan made their way down the cobblestone streets, trying to navigate around the massive arrangement. The florist had been thrilled at the purchase - something about bandits interrupting trade supplies and harming business. Dylan made a mental note to look into it - and had included some rather beautiful paper for free, complete with an intricately tied bow. The end result was bigger than Dylan's head though and it was a relief to shoulder into the Three Broomsticks, setting the bouquet on the counter with a huff.
Sirona was there, one eyebrow creeping into her hair as she surveyed the small garden on her bar.
"Well, hello there. Who's the lucky person?"
"You."
Dylan laughed. Okay, they may not have been able to rattle the florist, but Sirona was even better. They hadn't known her long, but already Dylan liked her no-nonsense attitude wrapped around this warm, comforting center. They knew from experience that Sirona would gut anyone who threatened her patrons - let alone her friends - and that was more reassuring than all the Hogwarts residents who had shot Dylan well-meaning, but ultimately hesitant smiles. That probably would have been just fine for an average student, but they'd learned hard and fast that they needed to cultivate a stronger support network.
Unfortunately, Sirona looked as if she regretted ever letting Dylan through the door. "Look, kid, I can't in good conscious say I'm flattered, but--"
Dylan laughed again, gesturing like they were swatting away a particularly bothersome fly. "It's just a gift, Sirona. A 'thank you' for helping me out last time I was here. Nothing more, but nothing less either."
"Oh." Her whole body relaxed at those words, a small, self-deprecating smile gracing her lips. "In that case, they're beautiful." With a wave of her wand Sirona summoned a vase filled with water, the bouquet unwrapping in midair to settle in its new home. Dylan hummed in appreciation. Not just at the magic, but the vase itself. They wouldn't say that the Three Broomsticks was ugly by any means, but it was... homey; well-worn like your favorite pair of boots after years of travel. Dylan was no connoisseur, but the detailed crystal now catching the light appeared to be of an excellent quality.
Sirona noticed the look. "My mother's," she said dryly. "I've got a whole closet of her disgustingly extravagant stuff. Everything that doesn't fit in the house anymore, even with the extension charms."
"That's funny, I was thinking about my own mother when I bought this."
"Did she teach you about flowers? These are very well chosen."
"Uh..."
Sirona paused in rearranging the bouquet, her eyes narrowing at Dylan's sheepish expression. "Don't tell me you chose this at random?"
"Well..." Odd, had it gotten hotter in the Three Broomsticks? Dylan rubbed at the back of their neck, looking around, sure that the crowd must have grown... but no. There were actually fewer people than when they'd first walked in. They gave an awkward cough. "Sorry?"
Sirona just huffed; not quite a laugh, but close enough. "What are your divination grades like? I'd wager you have at least a mild touch of The Sight if you were really drawn to these without realizing. Let's see... transformation," she said, pointing to collection of calla lilies. "Rather fitting for me, hmm? Pink roses to express gratitude, and yellow for friendship..." Sirona dipped down to breathe deeply, seeming to savor their scent, and Dylan found themselves sinking into a feeling of contentment. Yes, that was all quite appropriate.
"And these?" they asked, fingering the petals of a deep purple flower; so deep as to almost be--
"The black dahlia," Sirona said, her eyes snapping open. They zeroed in on Dylan. "They herald coming danger."
...oh.
Dylan swallowed. "Right. Okay. I... well. I think it's already here."
From the dragon that had emerged from the clouds, to the shifty wizards populating Hogsmeade's streets, it seemed that everywhere Dylan went danger was dogging their steps, to the point where they couldn't even settle in to study without their wand in one hand and a Wiggenweld in easy reach. It's not as if they'd thought that danger would suddenly disappear, but hearing that their premonition to Professor Onai might be true after all...
"You know," Dylan said, swallowing, "my Divination grades are very good."
The look Sirona shot them said the joke had fallen flat, but she nevertheless turned and pulled them two mugs of butterbeer. After sliding one over - giving Dylan something to do with their hands, thank Merlin - she plucked one of the dahlias from the vase, snapped the stem, and tucked the flower into the buttonhole of Dylan's jacket, her movements determinedly furious.
"Own it," she said, clinking their mugs so that the foam went flying. "Let the danger come. You've got friends to face it with."
That's all they'd ever wanted.
Mustering up a shaky smile, Dylan toasted to the future.

Are You Looking For The Best Sewage treatment Plant Manufacturer in Faridabad ?
The last two decades have seen Faridabad blossom into a thriving industrial hub, raising urgent worries about how to handle the increasing amounts of sewage & industrial effluents produced in the area.
Faridabad's ability to treat industrial & domestic wastewater & reduce water resource contamination has become critical due to the city's concentration of large process industries, including edible oil refineries, textile processing units, polymers & chemical compounds manufacturer, & smaller commercial businesses spread throughout its various industrial zones.
This in-depth study examines the significance & requirement of sophisticated Sewage treatment Plant Manufacturer In Faridabad for various commercial centers & residential communities.
Additionally, we evaluate the crucial & diverse role that industry leader Netsol Water has played in providing sustainable wastewater treatment infrastructure to a range of industrial sectors & urban centers through the implementation of various technical upgradation.
Growing Demand for Sewage treatment Facilities to Address Water Pollution
The last ten years have seen a sharp rise in the production of sewage & industrial effluent across Faridabad due to fast-paced industrialization & growing municipal boundaries. According to various surveys throughout the year, the waste generation along with wastewater continuous discharge has been rising more than 30% from what it was in the past five years & is constantly growing.
Faridabad must now have strong water contamination reducing systems with custom-built industrialmachinerysupported by STPs large enough to handle significant volumes, to address wastewater management difficulties.
Wastewater's Effect Due to the Absence of Adequate Treatment Facilities
Commercial Businesses located in various industrial areas are disposing of their unprocessed wastewater flows into the roadside or in open drains due to a combination of overburdened or abandoned shared effluent treatment facilities & a deficient sewage network. This dangerous mixture of heavily contaminated industrial wastewater is released into neighboring streams & agricultural areas by these pipes.
Because of the hazardous effluents' significant contamination of groundwater supplies, the water is dangerous for consumption by people since TDS, chlorides, magnesium, calcium, & heavy metals exceed permissible limits by more than 5–20 times at various locations!
Every rural settlement in the area around Faridabad had its comsumptive water supply systems shut down intermittently due to severe groundwater poisoning & air-water contamination, which also affected the feed water supplies for the neighboring towns. Aquatic ecosystems have also suffered irreparable damage as a result of the decline in levels of dissolved oxygen in water bodies receiving industrial wastes.
Since dangerous industrial effluent & sewage are constantly being dumped into Faridabad's water bodies, responsible wastewater management methods that emphasize suitable treatment facilities, stringent compliance, & reutilization of water are the keys to providing relief, recovery with minimum as well as negligible environmental foot-print.
The major significance of the responsibilities of STP Plants in encouraging Sustainable Water Utilization
Sewage Treatment Plant significantly reduce the pollutant load in the discharged water, thereby reducing contamination of receiving water bodies, land, & communities. They do this by effectively treating industrial effluent & sewage through a series of standardized treatment steps.
The treated water is much safer for the environment since its quality satisfies specified disposal standards.
Considerable quantity of water remaining may be recycled after tertiary final treatment, which significantly reduces the demand for freshwater & increases overall sustainability.
Modern technology as well as control reduces human intervention while preserving treatment effectiveness.
Onsite STP Plants liberate commercial businesses from reliance on outside facilities that may experience disruptions that affect discharge compliance.
As a result, STPs are critical & especially important for places like Faridabad with limited water supplies.

How the Delaware River Basin Changed Environmental Policy
Tumblr media
In 2021, a landmark decision reverberated through environmental and energy policy. The Delaware River Basin Commission took a bold stance against hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking. This watershed moment represents the culmination of nearly a decade of persistent advocacy, scientific scrutiny, and passionate environmental activism.
The Delaware River Basin is far more than just a geographical feature; it stretches over several states, such as New York and Delaware, and provides drinking water to over 15 million people. It serves as a lifeline for diverse wildlife, supporting critical habitats for the native trout, American eels, and bald eagles. The river is the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi, and its preservation has become a paramount concern for environmental advocates.
The journey to this fracking ban has been long and complex. For years, the region teetered on the edge of potential environmental disruption. Geological surveys revealed significant natural gas reserves in formations like the Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale, which stretched across multiple states. The potential for energy extraction was substantial, with estimates suggesting trillions of cubic feet of natural gas beneath the surface.
However, the environmental risks associated with fracking have always been a profound concern. The process involves injecting a mixture of water, salt, and thousands of toxic chemicals deep into the earth to extract fossil fuels. These chemicals have been linked to serious health concerns, including cancer and genetic mutations. Moreover, the potential for water contamination posed an existential threat to a watershed that supplies drinking water to millions.
New Jersey has been at the forefront of this environmental battle. Former Governor Chris Christie initially took a cautious approach, implementing a one-year moratorium on fracking in 2012 and allowing further environmental impact studies. His decision pleased neither environmental advocates nor industry representatives. The Sierra Club criticized the moratorium as inadequate, while industry groups argued it sent the wrong message about natural gas benefits.
The political landscape shifted dramatically with the election of Governor Phil Murphy. He became a driving force in pushing for comprehensive protection of the Delaware River Basin. Murphy advocated for a full ban not just on fracking itself but on all associated activities, including the storage, treatment, and disposal of fracking waste.
The Delaware River Basin Commission's vote was historic. Four of the five commissioners voted to prohibit fracking. They unanimously recognized the significant immediate and long-term risks that fracking posed to water resources.
This decision wasn't achieved in isolation. It was the result of relentless efforts by environmental organizations like the Natural Resources Defense Council, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Sierra Club, and numerous other advocacy groups. These organizations mobilized members, submitted comments, attended meetings, and waged a comprehensive campaign to protect the watershed.
The ban represents more than a local environmental victory. It's a critical step in addressing broader climate change concerns. By prohibiting fracking, the commission is taking a stand against fossil fuel infrastructure and signaling support for cleaner energy alternatives.
However, environmental advocates are quick to point out that this is not a complete victory. While fracking is now banned, the commission's ruling does not prohibit the transportation and disposal of fracking waste or ban water withdrawals for fracking purposes in other regions.
As climate change and environmental degradation become increasingly urgent global challenges, this moment serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved through persistent advocacy, scientific understanding, and political will. The Delaware River Basin stands as a testament to the possibility of prioritizing long-term environmental sustainability over immediate economic gains.

AI and Historical Maps Unite to Locate Abandoned Oil Wells
Tumblr media

The Hidden Legacy of Abandoned Wells
AI and Historical Maps are proving to be a game-changer in identifying and addressing the environmental hazards posed by undocumented orphaned wells (UOWs). The United States is grappling with the environmental consequences of its long history of oil and gas extraction, particularly in the form of undocumented orphaned wells (UOWs). These abandoned wells, many of which have been left without a responsible operator or official documentation, pose significant threats to both the environment and public health. From methane emissions that accelerate climate change to the contamination of water supplies with toxic substances, the dangers are clear. Yet, pinpointing the locations of these hidden relics, estimated to number between 310,000 and 800,000, has long been a daunting challenge.
Combining AI and Historical Maps to Find UOWs
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have provided a promising solution to the problem of locating orphaned wells. In a groundbreaking project, researchers have turned to historical maps, some dating back as far as 1884, to help identify the sites of former oil and gas operations. These topographic maps, digitized by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), offer valuable insights into early drilling activities. The challenge, however, is sorting through vast archives of these old maps.
Fabio Ciulla, a postdoctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has been instrumental in leveraging AI to analyze these maps. By using a U-Net convolutional neural network, an AI algorithm designed to recognize oil well symbols, researchers can now identify potential UOW locations with remarkable accuracy. The system was trained on manually labeled maps and applied to regions with significant oil production histories, such as Kern and Los Angeles counties in California, and Osage and Oklahoma counties in Oklahoma. In these areas, the AI identified over 1,300 potential orphaned wells.
Verifying AI Findings and Expanding Detection Efforts
While AI has proven effective in identifying potential well sites, verification remains a critical step. Researchers use satellite images and historical aerial photos to search for visual signs of abandoned wells, such as pump jacks or storage tanks. In cases where surface evidence is lacking, magnetometers are deployed to detect buried metal well casings. The accuracy of the AI is impressive, with wells being located within an average of 10 meters of their predicted positions.
AI and Historical Maps represent a significant leap over traditional approaches, such as manual record searches or on-the-ground surveys, which are often slow and geographically limited. However, the project doesn’t stop at map analysis. As part of the Consortium Advancing Technology for Assessment of Lost Oil & Gas Wells (CATALOG), the effort includes a range of advanced tools, such as drones equipped with methane sensors and magnetometers, to detect leaks and locate buried wells. Additionally, researchers are working on cost-effective solutions to monitor methane emissions, an essential step in mitigating the environmental impact of orphaned wells.
The CATALOG initiative is also tapping into citizen science, encouraging individuals to use smartphone magnetometers to help locate abandoned wells. This crowdsourced approach expands the reach of detection technologies, providing valuable data while complementing professional surveys.
A Cleaner Future Through Collaboration and Innovation
The AI and Historical Maps-driven efforts spearheaded by CATALOG offer a glimmer of hope in addressing the legacy of America’s oil boom. By integrating historical data with modern technology, the project not only improves the accuracy of orphaned well detection but also lays the groundwork for more effective remediation. Collaboration with local communities, including Native American tribes and environmental agencies, is crucial to the initiative’s success. As researchers continue to refine their techniques, they are not only tackling the immediate environmental risks posed by orphaned wells but also contributing to broader climate mitigation efforts.
As Sebastien Biraud, a scientist at Berkeley Lab, notes, finding solutions to limit emissions is essential for the future. By combining AI, cutting-edge sensors, and community involvement, researchers are uncovering a hidden legacy of the nation’s energy history while paving the way for a cleaner and safer future.

A “New Delta” in the Desert
Part of a major push to green Egypt’s deserts, the New Delta project aims to transform 2.2 million feddans (9,240 square kilometers, or 3,500 square miles) of mostly barren desert west of the Nile Delta into productive farmland. The OLI (Operational Land Imager) and OLI-2 on Landsat 8 and 9 captured this pair of images showing the expansion of green landscapes in parts of the Alexandria and Beheira governorates in November 2018 (top) and November 2024 (lower).
Much of the new development is spread along a highway that connects El Dabba on Egypt’s north coast to Cairo. Note the canal extending northeastward from the upper left of the image. With the help of several pumping stations, this waterway transports wastewater from a holding lake in Alexandria to a new treatment plant to the south. Completed in 2023, it can process 7.5 million cubic meters of wastewater per day, enough to make it the largest wastewater and sludge treatment plant in the world, according to Guinness World Records.
Plans call for recycled water from the plant to feed into irrigation networks that supply the proliferating croplands in the area, but the system will not provide all the water that thirsty crops need. Pumped groundwater and water from a canal that connects to the Rosetta Branch of the Nile are also important sources of water for the region.
New farmland is also appearing in many other parts of Egypt. Boston University researchers used decades of observations from Landsat satellites to map areas where agricultural lands spread, were lost to urbanization, or abandoned between 1987 and 2019. They mapped 16,000 square kilometers of new farmland in Egypt, mostly in the Nile River valley and delta near existing agriculture. Over the same period, farmers abandoned 1,700 square kilometers, and new development occurred on 2,300 square kilometers of farmland. The results can be explored in this interactive map.

JESENIK, Czech Republic/WARSAW, Sept 15 (Reuters) - The death toll from flooding in central Europe rose to eight on Sunday as thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in the Czech Republic following days of torrential rain that caused rivers to burst their banks in several parts of the region.
A low-pressure system named Boris has triggered downpours from Austria to Romania, leading to some of the worst flooding in nearly three decades in hard-hit areas in the Czech Republic and Poland.
More rain and strong winds are forecast until at least Monday, though the rain eased on Sunday in Romania, which bore the brunt of flooding a day earlier.
Thousands of homes have been damaged over the weekend, bridges swept away and at least 250,000 households - mainly in the Czech Republic - were affected by power cuts.
One person drowned in southwestern Poland on Sunday, a firefighter taking part in rescue efforts was killed in Austria and two more people were killed in Romania, where the floods claimed four lives on Saturday.
In Lower Austria, the province surrounding Vienna where government officials said the firefighter had died, authorities declared the area a disaster zone and warned against non-essential travel.
A bridge collapsed in the historic Polish town of Glucholazy near the Czech border and local officials ordered evacuations early on Sunday. Local media said another bridge collapsed in the mountain town of Stronie Slaskie, where a dam burst, according to the Polish weather institute.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who visited nearby flooded areas, said on the X platform the government would announce a state of disaster and seek European Union aid.
'UNDER WATER'
In the neighbouring Czech Republic, police said they were searching for three people who were in a car that plunged into the river Staric on Saturday near Lipova-lazne, a village about 235 km (146 miles) east of the capital, Prague. Rainfall in the area has reached about 500 mm (19.7 inches) since Wednesday.
Reuters footage showed flood waters gushing through Lipova-lazne and neighbouring Jesenik, damaging some houses and carrying debris.
"We don't know what will be next," said Mirek Burianek, a resident of Jesenik. "The internet network isn't working, telephones don't work ... We are waiting for who will show up (to help)."
Lipova-lazne resident Pavel Bily told Reuters the floods were even worse than those seen in 1997. "My house is under water, and I don't know if I will even return to it," he said.
Residents in some flooded areas were bracing for conditions to deteriorate.
"When it rains (in the nearby mountains), it will arrive here in five or six hours," said Ferdinand Gampl, an 84-year-old resident of the village of Visnova, 138 km (86 miles) north of Prague.
Emergency services used a helicopter to evacuate people stranded in the Lipova-lazne district. Overall, more than 10,000 people had been evacuated in the country, the head of the fire service told Czech television.
In the Hungarian capital, Budapest, officials raised forecasts for the river Danube to rise in the second half of this week to more than 8.5 metres (27.9 feet), nearing a record of 8.91 metres (29.2 feet) in 2013.
As the rain eased in Romania, workers sought to restore power supplies to some 11,000 homes and clean-up efforts started as residents surveyed the damage.
"Everything I have is destroyed," said Victoria Salceanu in the eastern village of Slobozia Conachi.
