I forgot to post these drawings on Tumblr and IG. They are artworks related to the Songkran festival that took place last month. However, because I was very busy and my phone had issues, the comic part of the work was delayed. Sorry.😔

It’s Songkran day!

People perform a traditional dance during the opening ceremony of the Thingyan Water Festival in Yangon, Myanmar, 13 April 2024. The annual water festival, known as Thingyan in Myanmar, sees people gathering to celebrate by splashing water and throwing powder at each other as a symbol of cleansing and washing away the sins from the past year. The festival marks the start of the traditional New Year and is similarly celebrated in countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

Kifune Shrine

I went way out into the mountains of northern Kyoto where there's many rivers that flow into the bigger ones down south. It was quite lovely. Kyoto gets quite hot so many people will retreat to areas like this to escape the summer heat. They even have restaurants where you sit on platforms right over the water which helps keep you cool.

Of course the actual shrine of Kifune is here as well. It enshrines a kami of water called Kuraokami, who has some of the coolest kanji for their name: 闇龗, and is also a dragon. When you enter the shrine you see a row of standing lanterns (I talk more about lanterns here) and stairs up to the main shrine.

This shrine actually has an English website, which you can read here. Which is always nice to come across.

Also at the train station was a neat mural showing all the shrines and temples in the area as well

The main event that was occurring was a festival called Mizu Matsuri or the Water Festival, which occurs on the same date as Tanabata, so they combine the two festivals. The day opens with a Tea Ceremony, and they do Bugaku performances. The highlight is a cooking display by top chefs. All in all a fantastic event to go to. [x] [x]

Thingyan is a time of renewal and an opportunity to reflect on the values of peace and prosperity, to which the people of Burma aspire in their own lives and for their country. In the face of the military regime’s horrific campaign of widespread violence, the international effort continues to hold the regime accountable for the coup and abuses against civilians. x

as brazilians celebrate the chinese new year with lots of parties, we should start celebrating songkran as well, looks so fun, and it fits brazil so well lol
