Rittenhouse Art and Images
Okay, so I have decided that I can’t put a whole set of cards in one blog post. There’s just too many and I would talk too much 😂. So I am going to just post about the different subsets and base sets on their own at a random pace, interjected with other bits and pieces.
Today, I want to share with you all the BEAUTIFUL Art and Images set. Honestly, it is one of my favourites and its quite underrated. It has no special costume cards, very few autograph cards and nothing with special ‘facts’ or quotes from the show. Instead, its just about sharing the beautiful imagery and emotions that graced our televisions for 6 years alongside unique artwork from artists like Patricia Parker, Warren Martineck, and even Renee O’Connor.
The set itself was one of the latter sets released by Rittenhouse, being made available in October 2004. It is a small set with only 63 cards in the base set and a handful of artwork based sub-sets. Being released only a year after ‘The Quotable Xena’ set which boasted a MASSIVE 135 card base set, 135 card parallel set and an abundance of autograph cards, dual autographs and autograph costumes... you can understand why Art and Images floated under the radar.
The set itself is comprised of a 63 card base set and 7 sub-sets that either highlight the work of a particular artist or a beautiful aspect of the show. Along with this are the usual promotional cards and multi-case incentives which in this case are two autograph cards and two sketch cards.
What makes Art and Images unique from any other Xena trading card set is that in each box, there were also 2 hand-drawn cards. That’s right, unique hand drawn cards either sketched in pencil or sharpie and some even coloured in. Each one is signed by an artist at the bottom. Its a collectors dream and nightmare at the same time.. 🤩
I can talk about the sub-sets at another time, but right now I really just want to highlight the base set. Its beautiful in its own right, and what better place to start with than the binder.
How gorgeous is that? 😍
It sets the tone for the set with this beautified, blended washed out imagery. The front of the binder has Xena, and when you flip it, you see her nemesis. Open it up to show this image. 💜
The cards came 6 cards/pack, with 20 packs per box and 12 boxes per case.
Onto the base set. The cards are printed on a textured, matte card which is different to all the other Xena trading card sets. The cards feel thicker, and the images are stylised into a softer, ‘painted’ finish.
The first 9 cards are images of Xena while the second 9 are Gabrielle. Then, we get 9 ‘Forever Friends’ cards. I like how these cards aren’t limited to Xena and Gabrielle- we get a really nice playful image with Joxer, and cards that highlight the bond Gabrielle and Joxer had as well as Xena and Lao Ma.
The next two pages are 9 cards of women, then 9 cards of men. I do really like the men cards. I think the character choice was perfect and some great pictures were used. I do have a few issues with the women. My friends know that Livia is one of my favourites... but we have an image of Livia and the name Eve? I know I’m splitting hairs, they are one in the same, but... come on...
Also, Waltraute? Yeah. I will leave that one. You guys know where I’m going.
The last 18 cards are titled ‘Battle On Xena’ and have some striking battle images.
But wait, there’s more. It’s not just the front of these cards that have some charming images. The backs of the cards make up 9-card pictures, much like puzzle pieces.
What more can I say? They picked some attractive images and stylised them in such a fashion that has created a beautiful base set.
Thanks for reading. xo
