Today on me rewatching The Sign and realizing shit
ok I don't know if this is like obvious to everyone else but I figured out something rewatching The Sign
this scene in episode 2 where Phaya gets lured out to sea?
This is NOT Wansarat!!!! This is CHALOTHORN!!!!
this is something that has confused me. why would Wansarat be leading Phaya out to the ocean? that doesn't seem to make sense considering everything, but I just brushed it aside as a plot hole or something but then rewatching noticed this!
if you look closely you cans see that Wansarat's eyes flash green for a moment (there's a little sound effect when it happens too, but it's easy to miss)
you know whose eyes also flash green? Narong (the police officer who killed those guys in episode 5) when he was being possessed by... you guessed it CHALOTHORN!!!
(here you can see how his eyes changed while he was being possessed)
now at this point Chalothorn has shown up twice (though we don't know that yet). once in his sea serpent form in episode 1 and then in episode 2 he's camouflaged at the bar
and look at those eyes!!! they're green!!!
but wait there's more!!!
when Phaya sees "Wansarat" here, there's an interesting effect as he goes into a trance and walks into the water....
this being identical to the effect in episode 9 where Chalothorn lures him into the water by pretending to be Tharn!!!!
FURTHERMORE!!! The only times we see Wansarat directly are in Phaya's dreams and in episode 1 where she rescued him from the water/Chalothorn which turned out to also be Tharn pulling Phaya out
So why would Wansarat be over here by herself, while Tharn is elsewhere, since they're the same person? Why would she lure her soulmate to drown? It's because Chalothorn has disguised himself as Wansarat to lead Phaya to his death!!! He has been spying on them at the camp at this point, but at this point couldn't gauge how close they were so he went with Wansarat to lure Phaya (opposed to episode 9 where he disguised himself as Tharn for the same purpose since he knew Phaya would go after Tharn). He had already seen Wansarat save Phaya earlier, so he knew that he would follow her, and he even said the exact same thing to him to lure him over.
So this?
is Wansarat
But this?
is Chalothorn pretending to be Wansarat in order to lure Phaya to his death
#the sign#the sign the series#idk if I am late to the party with this revelation but i was proud of myself for putting it together#chalothorn#chalothon#phaya#phaya the sign#phayatharn#wansarat

Do you know this (implied) gender fluid character?
Propaganda:
so it's hard to classify this as headcanon/implied/canon because it's kinda all three at once? When translated into English, the pronouns used for Wansarat are translated to she/her, but I know that pronouns and gender indicators in Thai are a bit more complex/nuanced than how that works in English but unfortunately I don't speak Thai so I can't say for certain how she's referred to in canon. But I do know that she's referred to as a "nagini" which is a female naga and also referred to as "sister" by her sister so at the very least feminine terms are used for her. BUT there's also a bit in the current day when one of the characters is having this dream about Wansarat, there's a line of dialogue that goes "there was once a naga who disguised itself as a man" regarding Wansarat which goes into the next thing which is Wansarat has two main forms we see her in: a human form and a more naga but still human presenting form. The human form is played by a man while the naga/human combo form is played by a woman. Even in the human man form, her hair, clothes, and accessories are more feminine in style and aren't what men at the time would wear. But then her later reincarnation is a cis man who looks like her male human form. These two different forms are said to be one in the same, and even when she's now Tharn, a cis man, he's still Wansarat (referred to directly as Wansarat at one point) and still called "sister" by Wansarat's sister, but is still seen as fully a man. There's a part where the love interest draws the more feminine version of Wansarat (that he sees in his dreams) and then draws modern day Tharn (Wansarat's reincarnation) and people think it's the exact same person. Like the two pictures look like twins to them and they can't tell any difference between them, other than one is a girl and the other is a boy (though when looking at the picture of him, they remark that he's as pretty as a girl) It's also worth noting that in the current day, anytime the love interest encounters Wansarat in his dreams (and the one time he had a vision of her), it is always the most feminine version, which would suggest that she still holds some identity to that form Anyways all of these different forms and gender presentations are all still one person and are treated as one person in canon. Wansarat is Tharn 100%, though Tharn seems to exclusively identify as male, Wansarat has less clear identification The prevailing headcanon is that he's a trans man, a view that I love and indulge in frequently, but I think the genderfluidity of Wansarat/Tharn is an avenue worth exploring and has strong roots in canon

The Ultimate Character Design Tournament
Please remember to vote for characters solely based on their design, rather than which character you are more familiar with or like more!
"White Chain" 82 White Chain Born in Emptiness Returns to Subdue Evil (Angel Form) | Kill Six Billion Demons
"When she first took off her helm and I saw her true form in the comic, my jaw dropped. I LOVE the red and cyan color scheme, the overabundance of eyes, the way she billows like smoke; the fact that she's so much more human than the other angels is incredibly important to her arc as she struggles against the system and learns how to accept herself and her gender. She's so good."
Wansarat | The Sign
"look she's an ambiguously gendered naga princess and I'm obsessed with how they designed her nagini and human forms. Like 1) they had two people play her, one for the female presenting nagini form and one for the male presenting human form (the guy playing her human form is the same guy who plays her reincarnated self) (the universe liked her male form so much she was reincarnated into a cis guy) 2) even in her more male form, she's dressed in a more feminine outfit with more feminine styling (comparing her to the other male naga we see, it is very different). 3) she's tits out in both forms. 4) they didn't need to go that hard but they did"
*Spoilered propaganda under the cut*
"White Chain" 82 White Chain Born in Emptiness Returns to Subdue Evil (Angel Form) | Kill Six Billion Demons
Look, I love her later design where she's more self-actualized and so much more human and actually SMILES and that brings me so much joy, but holy shit that angel form is amazing.

It's true ? The special promo video also tells us (in Heng’s interview) that Chalothon and Wansarat were lovers in past lives, even while it is Phaya and Wansarat who are paired by fate in The Sign?
*SPOILERS*
In the novel, Wansarat/Tharn was originally in love with Chalothorn, but Chalothorn didn't return their feelings until he "lost" them. Either way, Tharn's one true love is Phaya/Prince Sakuna-Napharut, the Garuda King, so no matter how many lives they get to live, they will always find each other.

Ok, I have to truthfully confess that I was wheezing over the whole scene where Phaya dreams of their past lives and we have Tharn presented with long hair, obviously as his female past life form. Babe and not Freen…?
I mean, the first two episodes have done just about everything to try to convince us that Babe and Freen resemble each other here. Phaya draws his vision of Wansarat, and it’s Freen with Babe’s eyelid mole. When Phaya comes back to himself after being rescued by Tharn when he was lured into the ocean by another vision of Wansarat, he asks Tharn why he looks like the woman in his dreams. Even in ep 3, when Phaya shows his grandmother his drawings of Tharn and Wansarat, she asks him if they are twins. Then when the dream scene plays out…it’s Babe in a long wig. Like, okay I get it, I know what they are doing here, but honestly, was Freen busy that day?
Anyway, it just happened to hit me squarely on the funny bone and I am still laughing about it a day later. Either way, I am enjoying the hell out of the show and am looking forward to future episodes.

I'm watching last week's episode of The Sign and I love Babe in his Naga outfit, but it makes no sense because that's not what the female Naga are wearing and Wansarat was a woman. If she was in this outfit, she would have had her entire left titty out. Which, as a gay, I'm not opposed to, but Tharn should have been in a green catsuit like Freen!Wansarat was and like the sister Naga that brought Phaya to the spirit world is. I just need consistently y'all!
#the sign#the sign the series#like I'm here for the outfit but it just doesn't make sense in the story#Chalothorn isn't dressed like that so the male Naga aren't dressed like that#Freen!Wansarat and Wanwisa aren't dressed like that so the other female Naga aren't dressed like that#why did they put him in that costume#I am bothered lol#regular clyde

The Eagle & the Serpent in The Sign
As a lover of tattoos, I noticed in the trailer that Phaya has wings tattooed on his back as well as another design.
Also in the trailer for the show, there was a shot of a book titled Legend of Naga & Garuda.
They are important mythical (and religious) entities. Garuda is a birdlike deity and is in a constant battle with snakelike Naga.
We saw them in the trailer as well.
The title card for the series also features them. The eagle is on the left and the serpent is on the right with its tail being the top of the wording.
This is Naga in creature-form confronting our Garuda in human form .
Phaya comes from a wealthy family (in any life).
And was in the air force before being recruited into the special investigations unit, which could be the reason for the wings tattoo.
So who could the serpent in human form?
And because I always pay attention to colors, Chalothon wears green ties, so this could be him or someone sent on his behalf watching Tharn.
In the trailer, Phaya speaks to a woman wearing a gold serpent crown and serpents on her necklace.
She mentions her sister will find Phaya in any life, and when we see Wansarat, she shares the same accessories with a serpent belt and bracelets as well but in green.
She was Naga's in their past lives.
But in this life,
she will be Phaya's.
Because Phaya is "of the air" he will struggle with water.
And he has since he was a child.
In the tale of Garuda and Naga, their conflict stems from powerful water that Naga possessed.
Note that there are three kids who see Phaya drowning: Tharn, Yai, and another unnamed kid.
One kid appears to wear green.
Wild Ass Theory - That kid is Chalothon and he had something to do with Phaya being in that water.
Tharn's parents died in an accident when he was a child, and he almost died as well.
He has the gift of foresight, and Garuda's most known wife is Unnati who was known for her wisdom. His gift is tied to karma, and as a child, he was told to free himself from the person he was tied to in a previous life, he needed to return a protective amulet to its owner.
Two Theories - I think for Tharn to no longer be tied to Chalothon, he had to save Phaya who is the person Chalothon has wronged in the past (and possible present) or Wansarat betrayed Chalothon by saving Phaya in a previous life therefore tying them together forever, and she must save him in every life now.
So when will the necklace reappear?
Because Phaya seemed to be wearing some sort of necklace when he confronted Tharn in the bathroom.
Bonus: We have a lion on the squad.
And Yai's girlfriend, Sand, is played by Yoshi who is transgender and Miss Tiffany's Universe 2017, so Yai better keep his eye on the prize and quit looking at other girls.

THE SIGN EPISODE 3 – NONG KHAI, NAGA FIREBALLS AND THE DANCE OF ADVERSARIES
Only watched Ep.3 last night and it was a trip in more ways than one; this is another one of those BLs where the hand of the Tourism Authority can be seen heavily pulling the strings, and in this episode it was plugging for Nong Khai – which is especially relevant to the naga mythology underlying The Sign.
The province of Nong Khai is far to the northeast of Thailand, separated from Laos by the mighty Mekong River; its capital city is also called Nong Khai.
Nong Khai is famous for a number of festivals, including the Rocket Festival and the Naga Fireball Festival. The Rocket Festival is referenced in the subtitles at Ep.3 [2/4] 14.41 but this is incorrect, because Tharn's grandmother mentions the date as "the 15th day of the 11th waxing moon" (the Rocket Festival takes place earlier in the year).
This date (a full moon night) is actually the Naga Fireball Festival, when the phenomenon of fireballs launched from the Mekong is supposedly at its peak. (There is as yet no formal scientific explanation for the fireballs, and locals believe they are spat out by the great naga or Phaya Naak who resides in the Mekong.)
This is of course the same festival that Phaya, Tharn, Yai and Sand go to watch at Ep.3 [3/4] 2.18 .
And this date (วันออกพรรษา/wan ok phansa) is also the last day of the three-month Buddhist Rains Retreat (พรรษา/phansa, sometimes also called Buddhist Lent). The first day of Phansa (in the eighth month), marks the official start of the rainy season – Phansa is the Thai version of the Buddhist celebration known more generally as Vassa elsewhere, and the word is derived from the Sanskrit varsha (which means rain).
In The Sign this celebration of Phansa is significant because the word is a cognate with the วรรษา/wansa of Tharn's formal first name Wansa and the name of his previous female naga self Wansarat, which are both also derived from the Sanskrit varsha (see this link here for more elaboration). 👀
Anyway, this means that kid Phaya was actually drawn to the Naga Fireball Festival (not the Rocket Festival) and was presumably called into the Mekong by a naga. And he was saved from drowning by a reincarnated naga (Tharn) on the last day of the season that shares Tharn's name.
And thereafter, Phaya would always dream of Wansarat on the date of the Naga Fireball Festival (the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 11th month, also the last day of Phansa/Wansa).
This is why his visit back to Nong Khai coincided with the festivities we see onscreen – he was there to investigate these links to the date and festival.
So far The Sign has been fairly faithful in its visual nods to the naga and garuda mythology that underpins the narrative. There's been a lot of blue and green (very marine colors) associated with nagas Tharn and Wansarat. And there are references to red and the element of fire calling out to garuda Phaya. This scene is an example:
In the scene above the red light on one side is contrasted with the blue-green one on the other, and mirrors the dance of the fiery garuda and the water-dwelling naga. Phaya has just been rescued from the Mekong by Tharn, and he is shivering in a blue-green t-shirt (which is the naga's color, not his).
(above) Sparks erupt behind the garuda Phaya as he seeks to recover his life-force after his near-drowning; the light on his person (as he is facing naga Tharn) is of a cooler tint though
(above) Naga Tharn is also sopping wet but totally at ease; he is also bathed in warm tones as he faces the flaming presence of garuda Phaya
This scene after Phaya's near-drowning is also one of several where we see a swing (e.g., Ep.3 [2/4] 17.02, Ep.3 [2/4] 19.02, Ep.3 [3/4] 10.03 and Ep.3 [3/4] 11.07). I may be over-reaching here, but for Thai people this may be calling to mind the Giant Swing in front of Bangkok's Wat Suthat, which was once used in an annual Hindu Brahmin ceremony (now discontinued) that was held to mark the moment when the nagas of mythology abandoned their mountain stronghold on land (their coils maintaining stability) and moved instead to their permanent, watery homeland.
Noting that the nagas are shapeshifters, the green-eyed Wansarat enticing Phaya into the water is also likely to be a malevolent naga that has assumed Wansarat's form, seeking to drown Phaya (we've seen glowing green eyes before, on the naga that Phaya saw when he struggled with the Ep.1 water challenge, and also in the greenery of the garden at the bar/restaurant where the boys go to drink).
And in another nod at the naga/garuda conflict, when the abbot Luangpor lights two candles at Ep.3 [2/4] 28.36, the rumbling stormclouds outside (that are harbingers of rain) promptly extinguish the flames before speaking ominously with him.
Nagas, because of their association with all things water, are also custodians and dispensers of rain in Thai mythology. Thus the voice that speaks to Luangpor from the clouds must be that of a vengeful naga, and he has underscored his displeasure with garuda Phaya by snuffing out the flames of the candle (fire being associated with garudas in The Sign).
So one more little salute to the naga and garuda can possibly be read in the matching shirts that Phaya and Tharn don when they visit Wat Phra That Bung Puan at Ep.3 [3/4] 11.13:
The warm tones (garuda colors) of the matching shirts contrast with the blue-greens (naga colors) of their shorts/jeans. Meanwhile, the swirling graphics on their tops are likely a reference to the naga fireballs, which reminds us that even though the nagas and garudas are supposed to be at odds, the fireballs are one area of overlap with the flames of the garuda – a kinship also echoed by the matchy-matchy going on with the outfits here (and the premise that Tharn and Phaya are a forbidden but fated naga/garuda pairing). 😍
The culture of Nong Khai also explains why there is so much naga imagery in this episode – a lot of it is to do with the festival of the Mekong naga and its fireballs. But the garuda (Phaya's earlier incarnation) is still referenced in the visuals of Ep.3 – directly at Ep.3 [3/4] 15.08, but more indirectly elsewhere.
The many establishing shots of the temple finials called chofa (e.g., at Ep.3 [2/4] 8.19, Ep.3 [2/4] 19.53, Ep.3 [2/4] 23.10 and Ep.3 [3/4] 6.52) are actually a visual reference to the garuda:
This kind of chofa (with the curved profile reminiscent of a raptor's beak) is called the pak kruut or garuda tip chofa. There are several other kinds, including a naga finial, but the ones we see here in the establishing shots of the abbot's temple are of the garuda type and are a sly, less in-your-face wink at the garuda (at least compared to the abundance of naga imagery).
Anyway the trip ends with Tharn attempting to distance himself from Phaya because he doesn't want to jinx another of his loved ones (although what that means for Yai and Sand seemed a little rude for Tharn to suggest! 🤣).
True to his naga form a lonely Tharn seeks refuge in the watery realm – his condo pool:
But the flaming red swim briefs about his loins are in the color of the fiery garuda, and belie his divided loyalty.
So when Phaya goes to confront Tharn at the rooftop gym, the dance of the naga and garuda, historical enemies, goes into full swing. Unlike their other physical encounters down at sea level (e.g., the open water challenge of Ep.1 and the Mekong rescue) here garuda Phaya is up in the sky, as close to the sun as he can be, and here he's in his element.
And when the two tussle (as would be expected of a naga and garuda), of course it would be Phaya coming out on top. It's his realm, and his turn, after all:
The naga and garuda are ever-present in The Sign. I'm sure there will be more of this to come!

Wansarat is so iconic like she made herself look like a human man once and the universe was like you know what? You're right. Our bad. And then she proceeded to reincarnated into a cis man.
#look wansarat's gender is vague because they use female pronouns and we see her as Freen#but then Babe also plays her and it looks pretty clear that her human form is male presenting#cause like Freen's whole outfit as her is far more snake/naga like while Babe looks more human#so I've decided to say that she chooses to present male in her human form and she did it so good#that the universe was like you get to be a man now we messed up#anyways#the sign#the sign the series#tharn the sign#wansarat

This is probably my favourite reaction to Phaya asking Wanwisa what the story of Sakuna and Wansarat has to do with him in episode eight.
“What does all of this have to do with me!?”
*checks to see if Billy has a fever or is ill in full blown sassy gay man mode*
Billy: “She said a lot but he didn’t listen at all!”
*taps next to Billy’s ear* “Did you hear that?”

I'm still thinking about how Tharn and Phaya's fight ended, about their scenes together, also about Tharn and his personality, about how caring, selfless and forgiving he is. He's probably physically incapable of holding a grudge. Phaya yells at him, accuses him, slams him against the wall, accidentally - but still - hits him, and what does Tharn do? He continues to press for clarification of the misunderstanding, is so relieved and hugs Phaya when he returns to his senses, desperately holding onto him by his bulletproof vest, and when Phaya later starts talking to him in a normal tone, Tharn simply follows. And then he presses again to clarify the misunderstanding. As if the worst thing for him wasn't that Phaya was a dick to him, but that they were like "husbands but separated" 😀 (And that Phaya could be in danger.) Tharn isn't offended for a second, doesn't demand an apology, doesn't hold a grudge, doesn't keep Phaya away as "punishment," doesn't give him the silent treatment. He's just happy that they're together again, that Phaya is himself again. In fact, I have the impression that when Phaya apologizes to him and declares - twice! that from now on he will listen to him and that he doesn't care about anyone but Tharn, Tharn seems downright overwhelmed, as if this is more than he expected. (And I also have a feeling that when Phaya says that he will listen to him, Tharn is thinking about his secrets that he would like to tell him, but is too scared to do so…)
I also think about this because I suspect that it is thanks to this character trait that Tharn and Phaya met. In the trailer for the next episode, we see Phaya/Garuda injured and Tharn/Wansarat backing away from him in fear. I think that Tharn's innate caring and selflessness will win and he will simply help Phaya, who is after all his natural enemy. It's amazing how Tharn, in every incarnation he has with Phaya, never makes anything about himself except his sexual fantasies, in which Phaya caters to him hehe.
I love The Sign for introducing a character like Tharn - an amazing mix of sweet and badass - and making him a main and fan favorite character. Whose kindness and selflessness don't make him a wimp and a weakling, as is often the case, but one of the strongest, coolest and most beloved characters. I can't wait for the next ep to see if my predictions come true. And I really want to see Tharn nursing his hot enemy back to health and falling in love with him. It will be like watching adaptations of the best fanfics, I hope my heart will survive it 💖
